How a chief minister and a mega star transformed Gujarat tourism

The 'khushbu gujarat ki' campaign, envisioned by narendra modi and starring amitabh bachchan, was the first of its kind.

Gujarat is now considered one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. The turning point in the story of Gujarat tourism occurred due to a paradigm shift, initiated by then Chief Minister Narendra Modi . I vividly remember the vision laid out by him in 2009, when I called on him soon after taking over as Secretary of Tourism, Gujarat. The CM passionately narrated his experiences during his extensive travels in the state in his years as a party worker. Gujarat always had everything – a long coastline with pristine beaches, revered temples like Somnath, Dwarka, Pavagadh and Ambaji, dense forests including the Gir National Park, the only place where the Asiatic lion is extant and so much more. How come we haven’t been able to tap this vast treasure he asked.

The mandate was loud and clear — we had to do something substantial to bring about quantum growth in the sector. The CM had a clear vision — tourism was not merely a means to showcase the state but was to be an agent of change to bring about prosperity to the doorsteps of the people.

As luck would have it, around the same time, Amitabh Bachchan visited Gujarat for a special screening of his critically acclaimed film, Paa. During dinner, after the screening, the CM spoke eloquently about Gujarat and its tourist treasures and asked Amitabh Bachchan whether he would become the Brand Ambassador for Gujarat Tourism. Till that time, no other state had thought of roping in a big celebrity to promote its tourist spots. He graciously agreed to do so without charging a fee.

It was to be a tourism-centric, non-political campaign, named ‘Khushboo Gujarat Ki’ .

Festive offer

During the making of the films, the CM held several rounds of discussions with the creative team and gave his input about the destinations, culture, history and heritage of the places being filmed.

On the first day, the shooting started at Kirti Mandir, Gandhiji’s birthplace at Porbandar, on a hot summer afternoon in 42 degrees temperature. CM Modi was much concerned about the heat. He especially told us to take care of the health and safety of Amitabh Bachchan and the team.

When the campaign was finally released, it became an instant hit. Soon, we followed up with another set of films covering other tourist destinations, festivals, handicrafts and several other aspects. A total of 22 films were shot in three schedules of the shoot.

The result was spectacular. Suddenly, the hidden treasures of Gujarat were unveiled to travellers from across India and abroad. The growth in tourism was phenomenal and path-breaking. There were thousands of prosperous Gujaratis living in metro cities or abroad who had not yet seen Gujarat, despite being the most prolific travellers. Now they started exploring their own state.

Before I end, I am reminded of an interesting incident. In 2013, we had gone to the White Rann of Kutch with Mr Bachchan and the team. It was our second visit to the same location, Dhordo, after a gap of three years, since the campaign was first released. Dhordo is a small village near the border, almost entirely inhabited by the minority community. As we were winding up, a large number of rural women in colourful Kutchi attire from Dhordo village came to see Amitabh Bachchan outside his tent. They looked blissfully happy as they stood folding their hands to greet us. Then, an old woman spoke in the Kutchi language, which was translated by the village sarpanch Miyan Hussain. She said, Earlier for generations, our daughters could not marry outside this taluka. We were poor. No cultivation. No rains. But this year we could marry our daughters to more developed towns in far-off places such as Rajkot and even Mumbai , with so much money that tourists bring in”. Bachchan was deeply touched. ‘Khushbu Gujarat Ki’ had literally transformed their lives in a matter of three years, in a region that had been arid and infertile for centuries. Such is the strength of tourism.

Gujarat CM unveils Cinematic Tourism Policy; Pacts worth ₹ 1,020 crore signed

The gujarat cinematic tourism policy scheme offers various financial and non-financial incentives for film infrastructure development projects and for film-making projects in the state.

Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel on Saturday unveiled the state’s first Cinematic Tourism Policy at an event in Gandhinagar where Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) worth ₹ 1,020 crore were signed between organisations and individuals with the department for the development of film infrastructure and film production.

Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel said that the Cinematic Tourism Policy will be useful for a self-reliant India by building a self-reliant Gujarat. (PTI FIle Photo)

Actor Ajay Devgan was the special guest at the event. The policy scheme offers various financial and non-financial incentives for film infrastructure development projects and for film-making projects.

The chief minister expressed confidence that this policy will be useful for a self-reliant India by building a self-reliant Gujarat. This policy will also give unprecedented boost to tourism development by bringing the service providers of film-making sector on one platform, he said in his address at the event.

In the case of film infrastructure projects, there is a capital subsidy up to 20 % to eligible projects without any upper limit. These projects could be setting up a film city, film and TV studio, film training institute and post production facilities. They can avail up to 100 acres of government land on lease and a 100% reimbursement on registration fees and Stamp Duty.

In the case of film-making projects, the scheme offers several incentives for various types of projects including movie making, brand affiliation, documentary films and television and web series. The scheme offers a reimbursement up to 25 % on the cost of production not exceeding ₹ 25 crore for shooting big budget movies in Gujarat. Also, there will be reimbursement of 20% on expenditure in Gujarat and not exceeding 25 crore for organising national and international Mega Film Award Events in Gujarat.

Those who signed the MoUs included Laxmi Films, Bollywood Hub and Ajay Devgn. These agreements are for projects including film making, studio infrastructure and setting up acting schools in Gujarat.

The state has planned to leverage its vibrant culture, archaeological heritage sites, the world’s tallest statue - Statue of Unity (SOU)- long coastline and great white salt desert, well-developed infrastructure and connectivity, and exploit proximity to the world’s largest film producing industry or Bollywood, according to a media release.

The amicable populace, well-developed infrastructure, connectivity and better law and order situation gives an edge to the state and now the state aims to establish Gujarat as a leading state for film makers across the world in all languages, it added.

Gujarat: Six children die due to suspected Chandipura virus in five days

Chandipura virus causes fever, with symptoms similar to flu, and acute encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). the pathogen is a member of the vesiculovirus genus of the family rhabdoviridae. it is transmitted by vectors like mosquitoes, ticks and sand flies..

Chandipura virus, Chandipura virus cases, Chandipura virus deaths, Chandipura virus Gujarat

"Four of these 12 patients are from Sabarkantha district, three from Aravalli and one each from Mahisagar and Kheda. Two patients are from Rajasthan and one from Madhya Pradesh. They received treatment in Gujarat. Six deaths due to suspected Chandipura virus have been reported in the state, but only after the results of the samples will it be clear whether they were caused by Chandipura virus," Patel said.

Sample sent to Pune for confirmation

"Five out of six deaths have been reported from the civil hospital in Himatnagar in Sabarkantha district. All 12 samples, including eight from Sabarkantha, have been sent to Pune's National Institute of Virology (NIV) for confirmation," he said.

Paediatricians at the civil hospital in Himatnagar suspected the Chandipura virus as the cause of death for four children on July 10 and sent their samples to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for confirmation. Subsequently, four more children at the hospital exhibited similar symptoms.

"Chandipura virus is not contagious. However, intensive surveillance has been undertaken in the affected areas. We have screened 18,646 persons in 4,487 houses. The health department is working round the clock to prevent the spread of the disease," Patel said.

What is Chandipura virus?

Chandipura Vesiculovirus, often referred to as Chandipura virus (CHPV), is a member of the Rhabdoviridae family. First identified in 1965 in the Chandipura district of Maharashtra, India, this virus is primarily known for causing acute encephalitis, a severe brain inflammation, especially in children.

The Chandipura virus is primarily transmitted by vectors like mosquitoes, ticks and sand flie. The infection spreads when these infected sandflies bite humans, injecting the virus into their bloodstream. Other possible modes of transmission, though less common, include contact with bodily fluids from an infected person or animal.

The symptoms of Chandipura virus infection typically appear suddenly and can escalate quickly. Common symptoms include high fever, headache and vomiting. In severe cases, patients may fall into a coma. The infection primarily affects children and can progress rapidly, making early detection and treatment crucial.
