‘Irish Affair’ - A Love Story for All Time
The National Opera House, in collaboration with The Irish College of Music Theatre, proudly announces the development of a new Irish musical, Irish Affair - A Love Story for All Time composed by West End composer Stuart Brayson with David Wray as the musical arranger and produced by Deirdre Masterson.
Based upon a true story, Irish Affair is the dramatic tale of a marriage between Sean Cloney, a Catholic, and Sheila Kelly, a Protestant set in 1957, Ireland. (Fethard-on-Sea, Wexford) A happily married couple (they marry three times, one civil, one Catholic and one Protestant service) whose lives and love are severely tested by the powerful religious forces swirling around them. This musical blends a legitimate musical theatre score with influences from Rock, Pop, and Traditional Irish music.
Auditions for the two principal roles are scheduled for February 24th at The National Opera House , inviting professional male and female performers aged 25 to 35. Those interested in auditioning are encouraged to reach out to Elizabeth Drwal via email at [email protected] for audition materials and additional information.
Those interested in auditioning locally for ensemble and minor role casting opportunities are invited to register for a workshop style audition with the creative team on February 24th also. All age groups and voice types are welcome, in an effort to cast Wexford rural community life in the 1950's appropriately.
The staged concert performance of Irish Affair will take place at The Jerome Hynes Theatre at The National Opera House on June 27th, 28th and 29th.
Irish Affair - Synopsis:
Based upon a true story, Irish Affair is the dramatic tale of a marriage between Sean Cloney, a Catholic, and Sheila Kelly, a Protestant set in 1957, Ireland. (Fethard-on-Sea, Wexford) A happily married couple (they marry three times, one civil, one Catholic and one Protestant service) whose lives and love are severely tested by the powerful religious forces swirling around them. When the time comes for their eldest daughter to attend school, the local Priest, Father Stafford, insists she attend the town's Catholic School. Objecting to this intervention, Sheila insists that the parents, not the Church, will decide on their children's education. When her husband sides with the Priest, however, Sheila, feeling betrayed, secretly flees with her two young daughters to Scotland. Soon the social fabric of the village unravels as Father Stafford, convinced of a conspiracy, declares a boycott of all the Protestants in the village, forcing Sean, the village, and eventually the entire country to take sides in what quickly becomes an international controversy. With the small town tearing itself apart, Sean is forced to decide where his loyalties lie-with Sheila or the Church. Irish Affair is a passionate love story and brand new musical by west end composer Stuart Brayson (From Here To Eternity) about a brave couple whose convictions divided a nation.

Comedian Mario Rosenstock on bringing Gift Grub Live to the stage - and the north
David roy chats to today fm's gift grub star mario rosenstock about the challenge of bringing his satirical, impressions-packed show to the stage as gift grub live and why he's even funnier in the flesh....
"WHEN the Good Friday peace agreement was made in 1998, I always knew that I was going to choose a perfect anniversary to launch my first shows in Northern Ireland," jokes Gift Grub man Mario Rosenstock of why it's taken him so long to bring his topical, impressions-packed live act north of the border.
"I said, 'What about just after the 25th anniversary?'. And that's exactly when I'm coming up."
Indeed, with our political institutions clearly no longer fit for purpose and a 'severe' terror threat level currently providing an unwelcome throwback to the bad old days, the imminent arrival of Gift Grub Live in Belfast and Derry this summer can only be considered a late-maturing peace dividend.
Dublin-based Rosenstock co-created the satirical impressions-based Gift Grub radio segment with Paul McCloone (radio presenter/Undertones frontman) for Today FM's Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show back in 1999, with the pair bringing the topical stories to life for comic effect.
Second half of Britain’s Got Talent double bill to include stunts involving fire
Simon Cowell responds to feud between Sharon Osbourne and Amanda Holden
Having taken sole control of Gift Grub back in 2004, Rosenstock's impressions of familiar characters from Irish politics, TV, sport and pop culture along with well-known figures from the international realm remain a fixture on the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show to this day, with spin-off TV vehicles like RTÉ Two's The Mario Rosenstock Show and live tours allowing the comic to show off his physical comedy skills alongside those spot-on impressions.
"For years, people have been emailing me and tweeting me going, 'would you ever come up here?'," explains Rosenstock of his belated visit to the north.
"So, because I now have a new live show that I really love, we just said, 'Come on, we'll just give it a whirl - why not?'."
Of course, not all of Rosenstock’s regular characters from the Gift Grub radio show will be familiar to northern audiences, so it seems that we'll be treated to a special 'nordie-friendly' version of Gift Grub Live.
"I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to take about 50 per cent of my own show and I'm going to add a prosthetic limb of another 50 per cent which will be Northern Ireland-friendly," explains the actor turned comic, who appeared in RTÉ soap Glenroe back in the 90s prior to making his name on the radio by taking the hand out of everyone from Bertie Ahern and Bono to Roy Keane and Ronan Keating.
"And by that I don't just mean Northern Ireland characters. I also mean the prism through which Northern Ireland sees southern Ireland.
"For example, it's slowly dawning on me at the moment as I think about this that a lot of people in Northern Ireland, especially in Belfast, know next to nothing about Irish politics. So I may do something like a 'dummy's guide to Irish politics' for Northern Irish people.
"Maybe a little tiny symposium on Irish politics and its characters through the prism of the people from Northern Ireland who are watching: hopefully they might recognise certain characteristics in people down here that they also see in themselves up there."
While most of his Gift Grubbing is done on the airwaves with the aid of presenter Ian Dempsey, who introduces/sets up each skit and also helps with the writing behind the scenes, it's clear that Rosenstock has a definite talent for physically 'inhabiting' each character he takes on in a very funny way - a process enhanced for the live shows with costumes, silly wigs and other accoutrements.
"It's been an absolute joy," enthuses the mimic of getting to take his Gift Grub creations out on the road.
"I think maybe the appetite I had for doing it [live] has helped, because everyone is pretty much saying it's the best show I've done in 15 years.
"I use a very big screen, so I can be on stage as whomever and be talking to myself as other characters on the screen, like a kind of interview. But then I can also walk off stage and they can still be talking to each other until I come back on, like 30 seconds later, as somebody completely different. So there's a whole load of quick changes.
"It's pretty much all new material too, or it's old characters doing brand new stuff. And I think it's quite modern and up-to-date as well in terms of the tone and the stuff I'm talking about - not just the topicality, but in terms of whether it's 'wokeness' or political correctness or whatever that's touched upon.
"So it's quite modern and up-to-date and fun, and it's highly interactive as well."
Yes indeed, there's no escape from Gift Grub, even if you're the kind of shrinking violet who studiously avoids sitting in the front row, because you never know where Rosenstock will appear from - or whom he'll be when he does.
"All my shows are highly interactive," he enthuses with obvious glee.
"I do love to get audience participation into the show, so at a lot of my shows around Ireland the front two rows are empty. But I just tell them, 'No - there's always a 'front row', no matter where you sit'.
"A lot of characters I have come in from a different entrance anyway. So I might come in from the back of the theatre, or often up high in the stalls as well. So it's kind of like adult panto - I can come flying in from almost anywhere and do anything.
"For example, I might be dragging people up on stage and they'll suddenly realise that they're now Sinn Féin councillors, or that one is a Sinn Féinn councillor and the other is a DUP councillor, and that they have scripts in front of them to read, much to their chagrin. Things like that happen all the time."
As well doling out daily dollops of Gift Grub on the radio, the comedian is also now doing The Mario Rosenstock Podcast, a weekly one-on-one interview show in which he chats to all sorts of famous folks, including some of the very people he's impersonated over the years like Keith 'Howya buddies' Duffy and Louis Walsh, with the occasional 'caller' (voiced by Rosenstock in character) and Gift Grub-esque sketch thrown into the mix too.
"That's been a new departure, and a successful one," says Rosenstock.
"Everybody's doing a podcast, as you know, but the key question to ask when you do a podcast is, 'where's my lane?'. Do I have a little place that I can go?
"Everybody who listens to me down here would know that I'm a comedian, but then you hear me interview people with this bruise of 'live callers' that the guest kind of knows about, where I can say all sorts of things that I can't say as Mario.
"And we do comedy sketches and all that sort of stuff as well too. So that's our lane."
Slipping into armchair psychologist mode, I wondered if the fact that Rosenstock moved around Ireland a lot during his formative years might have had any influence on his comedy, particularly his ability to mimic almost any accent.
"I did move around a lot as a kid," offers the Gift Grub man, born in London to Irish parents who then returned to the motherland.
"I came from Waterford and then I went to places like Dublin and Cork, which means I had an awful lot of confidence to take on any characters from those regions.
"I wasn't ever going to feel I can't do them: I was going to go 'no, I own this - I lived there for two years'.
"The other thing then is meeting so many different people while moving around and wanting to fit in, if you like, means that you 'embed': you seek to embed yourself and then imitate or impersonate the creatures you want to immerse yourself with.
"There's a concept in Asian psychology that they call 'mirroring' and I remember when we moved down to Cork, within eight hours I was speaking like everybody else in Cork. So I would be a classic 'mirror'."
If comedy is just an amusingly distorted reflection of real life, it's little wonder Mario Rosenstock is a natural.

Sitting in Dublin's Olympia Theatre, Gift Grub star Mario Rosenstock is in a slightly giddy mood.
The 51-year-old impressionist and satirist is finally getting back on the stage next spring, when he'll embark on a nationwide tour of his greatest hits – alongside some brand new material.
"My favourite part of what I do is developing a character on the radio, getting laughs on the radio, and then eventually coming to a stage and seeing the whites of people's eyes... enjoying it live," he says.
"You can't get over the joy. And that's why people do things like this."
Comedian and actor Rosenstock has been a mainstay of Irish breakfast radio since 1999, when he first appeared on the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on Today FM – a place he still resides today.
Since then, he's performed thousands of live sketches, brought his one-man stage shows to over 200,000 people, and impersonated hundreds of well-known figures in Irish political, cultural and sporting life.
Starting out
But a whole lot has changed since Rosenstock and Dempsey first teamed up in the brand new Today FM studios back in May 1999.
"When I first started, I was 27. And I had a girlfriend for a couple of years," he explains.
"I was drinking quite heavily, smoking like a trooper. Now, I'm 20 years married to that girl, and we have two children" (son Dash, aged 14 and Bellamie, who is 8).
What do his kids, in particular his teenager, make of what he does?
"Dash's friends would tell him, 'Your Dad is cool. He sticks it to those fuckin' stupid politicians. I love him.'
"That's pretty cool," I say. "Yeah, it is cool," he agrees.
Family life
His son's favourite impressions are, in somewhat surprising news, Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe and Tánaiste Leo Varadkar ("because Leo takes his top off," he says).
But even a Dad who's famous can be kind of embarrassing sometimes.
Recently, the suggestion of performing a song about footballer Ronaldo on social media platform TikTok went down like a lead balloon at home.
"He was really enthusiastic about the song. And as soon as I mentioned TikTok, he kind of changed," Rosenstock laughs.
"He went, 'No, no, don't. I think that's a bad idea. It's just bad.'
"And I went, 'Why?' He went, 'No, it's just bad.' And then he went out of the room.
"So my wife Blathnaid came back in and said (whispers), 'I just had a word with him. All his friends watch TikTok, and he'd be fucking mortified if you were on there.'"
Rosenstock may have proved his enduring appeal over the past 22 years, but he also appreciates that he was in the right place at the right time back when Radio Ireland became Today FM in the late nineties.
"[It was] v ery small. And it became very, very big," he says.
"With Dempsey, and D'arcy, and Eamon Dunphy and all this. And I was just part of that. I was part of a wave.
"I met Ian (Dempsey), and Ian was – and he still is – the biggest name in breakfast radio. And we just became a team. That wave carried me into people's cars and kitchens every morning.
"I mean, Irish people love radio," he says. "They adore it. They still do. And they love it more than English people.
"We love listening to the radio and hearing stuff. We love the gossip, and what's going on. And we love, also, the pisstake."
Famous characters
Have any of his impressions ever caused the real-life person to get a bit annoyed? Or have people mostly been good about them?
The Dubliner says that he's forever "running the gauntlet" when he boards the Today FM lift, as there are always plenty of politicians and familiar faces milling about.
People are mostly nice about it though, he says, proceeding to tell me about a time he ran into former Labour leader, Joan Burton.
"The lift closed, and then this stiletto stopped the door," he says.
"And I'd been like, for years, just going, 'Can I just say?!' (mimics Burton's voice on floor of Dáil)
"She got in, and we had to go up two floors. There was just silence in the lift.
"And the door opened and she turned and went, 'You can't do me. But you do a great Willie O'Dea.'"
The great RTÉ broadcaster Miriam O'Callaghan is a funny one too, he says.
"She kind of kills me with with kindness: ' You're just so amazing. You're just such a genius.'
"And you can basically tell that she's going, 'Stop it. If I tell you I like it enough, will you fucking stop?'
"She's great. I think she's fantastic."
Who hasn't been quite as generous as the aforementioned individuals?
"Well, I remember I was doing The Late Late Show once, right? And you know the band Clannad. Máire Ní Bhraonáin comes over to me and goes (whispers), 'Flatley fucking hates you.'"
Footballer Roy Keane is arguably the impressionist's best-known character. He even came to see the comedy musical I, Keano when Rosenstock performed in it, and has previously been game enough to take part in a sketch on the radio show.
Does he find the attention flattering, perhaps?
"Oh yeah. Roy is showbiz. He loves showbiz. How do you think Roy is so popular on these things? He gets it," Rosenstock says, clicking his fingers.
"He's practically a stand-up comedian. He's very witty and smart. He's not like a monster at all. He's a cute hoor. He's cute as a fox... He's a piss taker. He comes from inner city Cork."
When it comes to his new show, the impressionist says audiences can expect a mix of both old and new material.
"The show is a greatest hits show, of all the best sketches that we've put on stage over the last 23 years," he says. "So that people get enough of their Flatleys, and their Roy Keanes and their Jürgen Klopps, and all that sort of stuff.
"But also, 25 to 30 per cent of the show is going to address what's happened to us all in the last two years."
Pandemic comedy
The comedian has been doing sketches every day since the pandemic started, which is a peculiar position to be in, he says.
"I've developed loads of characters like your Professor Luke O'Neills, your feckin' Sam McConkey (does Northern Irish accent) , and those guys... And so all these kind of characters as well. And you know, fucking Stephen Donnelly, like.
"These guys didn't exist [in the public consciousness]. So I'm going to make them come to life as well in the new show."
Humour through heartache
Was it tough to try and make jokes during the past two years, given the awfulness of the whole situation?
To an extent, he says. But only really at the very outset.
"You understood really quickly that actually people wanted you to do comedy," he says. "Because all this weird shit was happening around them, like lockdowns and 'stay in your house'.
"The last thing they wanted to do was turn on their radio and hear that this has gone as well.
"What they wanted to hear was that it's still there... And hopefully, I was a little bit of a part of giving some people a bit of a valve of a release."
But it's not all topical doom and gloom, though.
Rosenstock says the absolute highlight of what he does is when people text into the show to say they just caught the eye of a person in the car opposite, and both of them are laughing their heads off.
"What I think is lovely about it is that, in a more and more hostile world, people caught each other's eyes across two cars and laughed, and they knew they were laughing at the same thing," he explains.
"There's always a little bit of hippy in me. So like, spreading the love. The idea that you could be spreading a little bit of joy somewhere."
Tickets for The Very Best Of Gift Grub Live! tour are available now from Ticketmaster and venue box offices. Tickets for previously rescheduled dates are still valid.
