LIVINGSTONE ISLAND LUNCH

(Devil’s Pool and Angel’s Pool if available) Your tour begins by departing by boat for Livingstone Island from the Livingstone island Launch Site (which sits between the Royal Livingstone Hotel and Livingstone Town). On the island, our guides will let you in on the incredible history of the island as you follow the footsteps of Dr. David Livingstone all the way to the edge of the waterfall. Those who wish (and are able) can even take a dip in Devil’s Pool or Angel’s Pool, and everybody completes the experience with a 5-star gourmet meal prepared for you on the island itself. Did you know… guided tours to Livingstone Island have a 100% safety record. It is illegal to visit the Island with a private guide or on your own. Devil’s Pool is open during the drier months of the year, usually between mid-August and late December, when the Zambezi water levels are low enough for swimmers to take the plunge. NOTE: DEVIL’S POOL AND ANGEL’S POOL ARE ONLY AVAILABLE WHEN THE ZAMBEZI IS LOW. Safety is our first priority and therefore Tongabezi reserves the right to refuse the swimming activities without prior notice to weak swimmers or if the water levels seem too high. Children must be 12 and above to swim. Unless you are visiting between mid-August and late December, be sure to check the river levels with our team in advance so as to avoid disappointment.

07:30 / 09:00 / 10:30 / 12:00 / 15:00.

Livingstone Island is where Dr David Livingstone first saw the Victoria Falls. Explore the island and experience dramatic views of the Falls, before plunging into Devil's Pool, a natural rock pool on the edge of the Victoria Falls.

Visit Livingstone Island in Livingstone, Zambia (also known as Devils Pool) and stand where the Scottish explorer David Livingstone first viewed the Victoria Falls. On a Livingstone Island tour you can swim to the edge of the magnificent Victoria Falls and plunge into Devils Pool which is a natural rock pool on a ledge right at the edge of Victoria Falls.

Your trip to Livingstone Island starts on the banks of the Zambezi River in Livingstone, Zambia - 1,3 km upstream of the Royal Livingstone Hotel. Here you will meet your guides and be given an introduction of what to expect and a safety talk. From there you will take a short boat ride to Livingstone Island. The captain will navigate the rocky channels as you cruise within a close distance of the Victoria Falls. This is a great experience in itself.

Once you reach Livingstone Island you will be greeted by the friendly staff. You are then lead to the very edge of the Victoria Falls where David Livingstone first witnessed the Falls himself. You get to experience magnificent views of the Victoria Falls from a completely different perspective than the views from the rainforest. If it is a sunny day the rainbows are incredible.

Once you have viewed the Victoria Falls you have the opportunity to jump into Devils Pool. The guides will explain the route before giving you a safety briefing. Although there is a safety rope to assist you along the way, you should be a confident swimmer. Once you reach the ledge you climb onto a rocky outcrop close to the edge of the Falls. Devils Pool is a deep natural pool that has been created by thousands of years of erosion. Devils Pool has a natural rock ledge literally on the edge of the Falls. This creates a barrier where the water is only a few centimeters deep. This barrier allows you to safely jump into the pool without getting swept over the edge of the falls.

Once you are in Devils Pool you can lie on the rock ledge and look out over the Victoria Falls. With the flowing water rushing past just meters away. This is an incredible experience and one you will be talking about forever. Once you have had your fun in Devils Pool the guides will lead you back to Livingstone Island where you will be treated to either breakfast, lunch or high tea depending the the time of day. The three options are explained below:

Livingstone Island Morning Breezer (US$125 per person) Trips to Livingstone Island are offered at different times throughout the day. Each trip lasts about 1,5 hours. The Livingstone Island morning breezer trips leave from the Livingstone Island launch site (1,3 km upstream of the Royal Livingstone Hotel) at 07:30, 09:00 and 10:30 and includes tea & coffee, soft drinks and light snacks.

Livingstone Island Lunch (US$200 per person) The Livingstone Island lunch trip departs at 12:30 and includes lunch, soft drinks, beer and wine.

Livingstone Island High Tea (US$170 per person) The Livingstone Island high tea departs at 15:30 and includes tea & coffee, light snacks, soft drinks, beer and wine.

Please note that this activity takes place in Livingstone (Zambia). If you are staying in Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) you may require a visa to visit Livingstone Island depending on your Nationality. Please make sure that you have the relevant Visas before booking this activity.

Please note that Livingstone Island is usually closed from mid April until approximately the beginning of June each year due to high water levels.

We absolutely loved our day at Devil’s Pool. We did the Morning Breezer, and the day was without a hitch! We were picked up on time from our hotel and taken to the landing area where we signed our indemnity forms and then hopped on a speedboat to Livingstone Island. I won’t say much about Devil’s Pool, only because it should be your own experience from start to finish; however, I’m so thrilled that we chose to do it. The staff could not have been kinder or more professional. My 67 year old mom came with me, and the staff took such good care of her, I couldn’t have been more pleased. The food after the pool was fantastic, and overall, it was a magnificent day! After 4 weeks in Africa, my mom and I would both say that this was definitely a highlight!

Fantastic experience….we recommend it to adrenaline junkies

Clifford Smith – March 23, 2020

The day we arrived the water was absolutely pumping and so the Devil’s Pool was a no go but instead the guys took us to Angel’s Pool which was a total adrenaline junky experience with no natural lip to stop us going over the edge just a rope!! It was probably the most scariest thing I’ve ever done in my life but I’m glad I did it and this trip is a must do.

Making A Difference

Livingstone Island Tour Education, Community and Awareness

Operating on the Zambezi River brings its own challenges. Tongabezi desires less noise, less emissions and as little upset to the local flora and fauna as possible. Livingstone Island Breezer

(Devil’s Pool and Angel’s Pool if available)

Your tour begins by departing by boat for Livingstone Island from the Livingstone island Launch Site (which sits between the Royal Livingstone Hotel and Livingstone Town).

Customer Reviews

The experience was really nice, with motivated staff. For the amount paid, it would be better to do the island visit less rushed. It feels here was no time for anything. It would be great to make the activity longer, so that people can actually stay on the island a bit longer. The food served was very tasty.

We had an amazing time on the livingstone breezer. It is a must do activity and significantly better than any of the cruises offered by hotels. The staff on board were phenomenal, the food was delicious and the ability for the boat to get close to the animals for great photos is unmatched. relax and have a drink on board the livingstone breezer with an elephant in the background

What an amazing experience! This was one of the highlights of our trip. It was very well organized, the guides were highly skilled in each of their roles and put everyone right at ease - even my husband who doesn't swim well! The pictures and videos that were taken with our camera are absolutely incredible! They really capture the whole experience of being on the edge of the Falls! It's great to have pictures of ourselves in the pool because you are so caught up in the moment that you don't have that other perspective. The breakfast was also incredible, especially given that's it's all cooked on the premises. It was nice to share our experiences and impressions with other groups. We will totally recommend Tongabezie to anyone travelling to Victoria Falls!

It was a wonderful experience to be in Devil's pool, to feel the power of the waterfalls and to enjoy the majestic view. I would recommend it to my friends

David Livingstone was safely paddled to the Goat Island known as the Livingstone Island. This is where he gazed the spectacular sight of Mosi-Oa-Tunya which he named “Victoria Falls” in honour of his queen.

Archaeological diggings around the Falls have yielded stone artefacts that date back some 3 million years. However, it was only in November of 1855 that the Scottish explorer Dr David Livingstone travelled down the Zambezi River to see for himself the spot that the indigenous people called Mosi oa Tunya , or The Smoke that Thunders . Members of the local Makolo tribe transported Livingstone to the Falls in canoes, so that his first sighting of the largest waterfall in the world was from an island right at the heart of the falling water.

Livingstone was so affected by the sight that he exclaimed in his notes, “It has never been seen before by European eyes, but scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.” He went on to rename the Falls after his British queen, Victoria, but today the World Heritage List also recognises the original name, Mosi oa Tunya. The island from which Dr Livingstone first witnessed the Falls is the very same island you can visit today. A local heritage site, nothing on the island is permanent except for the David Livingstone Memorial Plaque.

Bespoke historical tours are available with Victoria Falls Heritage Tours

It is possible to stay right by Victoria Falls, but the Seven Natural Wonders of the World tend to get a little busy. The savvy traveller experiences the Falls in their own time and then gets transported back to a quieter world. Why not stay just a little further away, coming home to a romantic dinner overlooking the Zambezi with not another person in sight?

With 110 million gallons per minute crashing into a 105-meter-deep canyon, there are not many places around the world as astonishing and imposing as Victoria Falls. It is considered the world’s largest curtain of falling water and one of the 7 natural wonders. It attracts backpackers, honeymooners, solo travelers, and tour groups seeking to get a glimpse into this wonder of nature. Whether you take a look from any of its viewpoints at the Zambia or Zimbabwe parks or marvel at it from the air on a helicopter ride, Victoria Falls won’t disappoint you. However, if you want to get the closest to the edge and feel the force of the falls without taking an unnecessary risk, taking a leap of faith and getting into the Devil’s Pool might be what you are looking for.

This natural pool at the cliff’s edge offers the most thrilling experience at Victoria Falls. Caused by thousands of years of erosion and plates collisions in southern Africa, natural rock formations enclosed a section of the falls. Here, the water current is minimal in the dry season, and people can jump into the water and even look into the endless canyon below.

It was one of the coolest and most exciting activities I’ve done in Africa. Still, additional information and preparation are necessary to make this experience more than memorable. From the different tours you can book to essential things you should bring. Here is a guide on preparing yourself before visiting the Devil’s Pool in Victoria Falls.

In comparison, local tour operators offer a lower price but generate fewer clients due to their lack of name recognition. Other companies add an extra cost because they include a short boat tour around the Zambezi River or a walking tour to Livingstone Island – even though that is already included in all tours. (Only transfers are not included in the official prices from Tongabezi Safaris)

If you want to book a tour to the Devil’s Pool, it does not matter which company you use; just keep in mind they use official guides.

NOTE: Unofficial guides are offering a visit to Devil’s Pool for half of the official price. You find them usually recommended by taxi drivers or someone on the street. They are usually locals who own a boat and know the route to Livingstone Island. These are unregistered and unprofessional guides who underestimate the danger and conditions of the falls. If you ever get suggested to join one of these unofficial tours, you should avoid it.

View of the Victoria Falls from the Devil's Pool

The cheapest places to book your Devil’s Pool tour are the official site of Tongabezi Safaris , the official guide of Victoria Falls , or directly with your hotel.

For a visit to the Devil’s Pool, there are only three official tours:

Livingstone Breezer (morning tour)

Departing at 7:30, 9:00, and 10:30 am and lasting 90 minutes, the morning tour costs 110 USD and includes a welcome drink (a local corn non-alcoholic drink) and two breakfast options with coffee or coffee or tea.

Lunch on Livingstone Island

Departing at 12:30, the Lunch Tour lasts 60 minutes longer (the lunchtime is longer). Here, you have a three-course menu and more time to walk independently at Livingstone Island. However, for 175 USD, this is the most expensive option of all three.

High Tea (afternoon tour)

High Tea tours depart in the afternoon at 15:30 and last 30 minutes longer than the Livingstone Breezer. In this tour, you will choose different savory and sweet snacks and alcoholic drinks to enjoy after a dip in the pool.

The current food menu for all three tours is available in the official Victoria Falls Guide . All tours spend more or less the same amount of time at the Devil’s Pool, and groups can be as large as 16 people. Fortunately, I went in low season (Dezember 2021 and was the only person in that time slot.

INSIDER INFO: Since Tongabezi Safaris has the monopoly of the Devil’s Pool tours, they selected the different prices according to the most asked time slots. According to an official local guide, the additional cost you pay for the lunch or tea time is simply not worth it, and this price was chosen primarily because of demand.

Viator offers tours on both sides of Victoria Falls. They are the largest tour operator search in the world, and with them, you can find and book in just a few clicks any tour you want to do in Zambia or Zimbabwe.

Is a visit to the Devil’s Pool worth it?

Absolutely! This is one of the most extraordinary natural spots on earth, and being able to step so close to the edge of a waterfall without any security is simply breathtaking. Even though lots of blogposts and YouTubers describe a visit to the Devil’s Pool as dangerous, these videos and articles are mainly created to generate views and not to property inform the reader.

View of the Victoria Falls from Livingstone Island

The team taking you to the Devil’s Pool is highly professional, and they will take care of you during the whole activity. You don’t need to be an extraordinary swimmer to get across into the pool, and even if you don’t know how to swim correctly, the staff can help you to fulfill your dream of stepping to the edge of the world.

The price for this activity is, in my opinion, a little bit expensive. Unfortunately, every activity in Victoria Falls is simply overpriced. On the other hand, visiting Livingstone Island was merely incredible. This is probably the best view of the whole Victoria Falls from the land, and if you visit Livingstone Island, a visit to the Victoria Falls National Park might be something you can skip.

NOTE: If you want to visit the Devil’s Pool from Zimbabwe, consider that you need to pass through customs and passport control, exit the country, and enter a completely different country, Zambia.

When to visit

With heavy rainy seasons between December and April, the Devil’s Pool is not accessible from January to June. The water levels are too high, and it is unsafe to be at the pool.

If you visit Zambia during July and early August, it might happen that the tours to the Devil’s Pool are not open yet. However, it depends on each year and is difficult to predict beforehand.

For a safe and 100% available visit, the months between August and December are the best. Especially in August and December, the water levels are high enough to feel like swimming at the edge of the world. For visits into the dry months of September to November, the water levels at the Victoria Falls could be so low that you can see and even sit on the rock, isolating the natural pool.

During the rainy season, travelers can also visit Angel’s Armchair, another natural pool at the edge of Victoria Falls. While this pool might not be as close to the edge as the Devil’s Pool, Angel’s Armchair is available for a more extended period than the Devil’s Pool, and I personally find the views from here way better.

Looking for the perfect picture, but are you concerned about your phone or camera? Don’t worry! The staff from the Devil’s Pool will have one person whose only job is to take photos and videos of you. You can give him your phone at Livingstone Island, and he will take care of taking pictures of the best angles during this unique experience. Of course, you can also bring a GoPro with a selfie stick.

Keep in mind. The use of drones is highly prohibited at Victoria Falls. You won’t only fly a drone on a border between two countries, but you will also be in an area where there are constant helicopter and microlight flights. If you want to use a drone at Victoria Falls, you will need a special permit from the government – a permit that is rarely granted and heavily monitored.

If you properly and securely want to see the Devil’s Pool from a distance, you can get a good glimpse of it from the Zimbabwe side of the Victoria Falls National Park or from the air during a microlight or helicopter flight.

Devils Pool Victoria Falls

In The Devils Pool right on the Edge of Victoria Falls

At one stage we were very reluctant to recommend the Devils Swim as we felt is was quite dangerous, but having done the Livingstone Island Tour and the devils swim on numerous occasions now, we have had a change of heart. It is an awesome once in a lifetime experience and the operation is extremely well managed and run, with safety being a high priority .

When the water level of the Zambezi is too high, the island is completely closed, so neither the "Island Tour" or the "Devils Swim" are open (see below). As the water level drops, the "Island Tour" opens but the water is still too high to swim in the Pools. As the water level drops even further, first the "Angel Pool" then the "Devil Pool" opens allowing both the "Island tour" and the "Devils Swim" to be done. This happens in reverse when the river is rising.

The activities remain the same price regardless of whether both activities are done or not. You can do the Island Tour and it is not compulsory to Swim in the Devils Pool, it is a personal choice.

Livingstone Island

The Livingstone Island tour is seasonal and can only be done when the water level of the Zambezi River is low enough to allow safe access to Livingstone Island. This is from approximately late June to early March .

Approximately mid July to late August and early January through till mid February.

Devils Pool

The Devils swimming Pool is available for an even shorter period as the water level has to be really low to allow for safe swimming . Although variable every year this is normally from mid August to mid January.

As the name suggests this is the island from which David Livingstone first witnessed the Falls in November 1855. From here he lowered a length of calico with a bullet attached as a weight to measure the depth of the Falls.

The trek across from Livingstone Island to get to Devils Pool Victoria Falls

The Experience

Five trips are offered throughout the day (details below) each trip lasting about 1.5 to 2 hrs. If you are coming from Zimbabwe, you can be picked up from your hotel/lodge and transferred to Zambia (at an additional cost). You can also make your own way across by catching three taxis, one to the Zimbabwe border, one between the borders and one from the Zambian border to the Dry Manzi jetty site, where the tour departs. If you are already in Zambia, then transfers can also be arranged to pick you up from your hotel, or you can just as easily catch a single taxi, which is much cheaper. If you need help booking this activity with or without transfers then please contact us .

Please note that there is a border crossing involved and you need to make sure that you have the proper visa's and meet Covid-19 regulations for Zimbabwe and Zambia .

At the Dry Manzi jetty site, which is the Livingstone Island launch site, you will meet your guides and be given an introduction of what to expect, as well as a safety talk.

From there a five minute boat ride speeds you through the current of the Zambezi River, twisting and turning as the captain navigates his way through the rocky channels, this in itself is an exhilarating experience as you head towards the rising column of spray from the Victoria Falls .

Once on the sandy and rocky island, you are greeted by the island staff with a traditional Maheu energy drink made from maize meal and are then led to the very edge of the Falls on the east of the island overlooking Horseshoe and Rainbow Falls. In 2005 a commemorative plaque was erected here to commemorate 150 years since Livingstone 's first arrival.

The guides then lead you to the west of the island overlooking Main Falls. Wow... what a magnificent view , as the main torrent of water gushes over the basalt precipice. It's like no other view of the Falls and gives a completely different perspective to the views one gets from the path through the Rainforest on the other side of the canyon.

During the morning trips, if it's sunny day, the rainbows are just incredible. It's truly jaw dropping and honestly I can't recommend it highly enough.

Now is your chance to jump into the Devils Pool if you wish, this is not compulsory and is only if you feel comfortable. Stripping down to your swimming costume (they have spares just in case you thought you weren't brave enough, but have now suddenly worked up the courage) your guide leads you and explains your route.

You swim slightly upstream in a very slow current, being a strong swimmer is not a prerequisite . A safety rope is also in place as an added precaution. You then climb out on another rocky outcrop close to the edge of the Falls and the Devils Pool.

The Devils Pool itself is a deep natural pool that has been created by thousands of years of erosion, but what is unique about it is that there is a rock ledge on the lip of the Falls, where the water is only a few centimetres deep. This natural barrier is what allows you to jump into the deep pool but not get swept over the edge.

You can now lie on this rock lip at the edge of the Devils Pool and look right into the 103m chasm of the Falls , with huge torrents of water flowing just meters away. The guides will take photos and video of you with your camera if you have one.

The Devils Pool has a real adrenaline high and people who have experienced it Love it! . Once back on Livingstone Island you will be treated to either breakfast, lunch or snacks depending the the time of day you have gone.

Your boat then whisks you back to the mainland at the launch site. A Magical experience!
