Colchester is an historic market town in Essex and, with a population of about 125,000, one of the fastest-growing communities in the United Kingdom. Once the capital of Roman Britain, it has a claim to being the oldest town in the country. The ancient settlement of Camulodunon was destroyed during the famous rebellion of Boudica in AD61. It was rebuilt and may have inspired tales of King Arthur's Camelot. Colchester Castle survives from the 11th century, alongside stretches of the old Roman wall. latest travel news colchester

The A120 is a major road stretching from London to Clacton-on-Sea, Essex in England. It is the longest A-road in the East of England region and is the main route connecting East Anglia to London and the M11 motorway.

The A120 was first built in 1925, with much of the existing route replacing the old Roman road, known as Stane Street. Since then, the A120 has become increasingly popular, with typically heavy traffic during commuter times in the morning and evening, and between London and Essex on Fridays and Sundays. The busiest stretch of the A120 is between Braintree and Harwich, where the A12 terminates and the A120 continues.

In terms of safety, the A120 has been credited with reducing traffic collisions, serious injuries, and fatalities. It has a good safety record, and casualty rates are relatively low across the entire route.

A criminology professor has warned the country is in a "state of emergency" due to the level of violence against women.

"We have a lot of work to do in terms of addressing the pernicious forms of misogyny, sexism, violence in our streets, our homes, online," Dr Aisha Gill told Sky News.

She said crimes such as these "don't occur out of the blue" and we need to "look at everyday normalising of violence against women".

Activists are "alarmed and enraged every single day", she said.

"I really hope we do see greater accountability in terms of disrupting male privilege that allows this kind of violence to take place in our communities."

Radio 5 Live presenter Mark Chapman has made an emotional tribute to his friend John Hunt at the start of the Euro 2024 pre-match show.

Mr Hunt, a racing commentator, is the father and husband of the victims.

Speaking through tears, Mr Chapman said: "This has been a heartbreaking day.

"John Hunt is our colleague and our friend, not just to the current 5 Live sport team but to all of those who have worked here with him over the past 20 years and also to all of you who have enjoyed his superb commentaries.

"On behalf of everybody connected to 5 Live sport, our love and thoughts and support are with John and his family."

Mourners have been leaving flowers and notes on the road where Carol Hunt and her daughters Louise and Hannah were killed.

One poignant note read: "Hannah, Louise and Carol. I wish none of this was real. I wish I could hug you all, tell you how much you meant to me.

"I wish we could hug each other. Love you forever, Mol xxxx."

Sports commentator Geoff Peters has said the murders in Bushey last night are "hard to comprehend".

He described John Hunt, whose wife and daughters were killed in the attack, as a "colleague and friend, one of the best in the sports business and always a joy to be around".

"Life can be so cruel. We're all here for you Hunty mate," he said.

Another friend of Louise Hunt has said he feels "in denial" about her murder, and is "angry, sad and in shock".

"I couldn't believe what had happened at first," he told BBC News.

"I'd heard the news from my sister early in the morning before I'd figured out who the victims were and, once I found out, it's been a massive shock, [I've] been in denial.

"I haven't processed it yet and I feel also angry towards the murder and I can't even begin to imagine what the father's going through - so, mixture of emotions - angry, sad and in shock."

Dog groomer Amy has said she knew 25-year-old victim Louise Hunt, who was also a dog groomer.

"She was always very friendly when I had questions about dog grooming," she told Sky News.

"It's such sad news. My thoughts are with her family and friends."

A Rendlesham Road resident has said they saw about a dozen police officers searching a nearby house this morning.

Rendlesham Road is a less than five-minute walk from the cemetery where Kyle Clifford was found.

The resident, who did not want to be named, said it was a "shock" to see guns and dogs in his neighbourhood.

"The road went from quiet to manic out of nowhere. They were shouting 'armed police' and pointing their guns so it was clearly quite a serious matter," he said.

"I don't really know who lives there, I've never seen the guy the police are after."

FBI, DHS warn of retaliatory attacks from extremists after assassination attempt on Trump

latest travel news colchester

In a joint bulletin issued to law enforcement agencies across the country on Monday, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security warned that extremist individuals or groups may instigate “follow-on or retaliatory” attacks related to the 2024 presidential election over the next several months.

The warning was issued on the first day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and in the wake of a shooting at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania that left one attendee and the gunman dead, and two others critically injured. The shooting is being investigated as an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, who was wounded at the rally.

More: RNC 2024 live updates: Latest news on what to expect from Tuesday schedule

In a four-page bulletin obtained by POLITICO , both the FBI and DHS said they “remain concerned about the potential for follow-on or retaliatory acts of violence following this attack, particularly given that individuals in some online communities have threatened, encouraged, or referenced acts of violence in response to the attempted assassination.”

Both agencies also stressed the rising threat of election-related violence, saying that extremist groups have been known to plot and execute attacks against “perceived political or ideological opponents” in the past. Lawmakers, public officials and even poll workers have been targeted in politically motivated attacks.

RNC replay: Donald Trump taps JD Vance as his running mate, makes first public appearance since shooting

“This attack reinforces our assessment that election-related targets are under a heightened threat of attack or other types of disruptive incidents,” the bulletin said, adding that local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and their partners should remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior.

Democrats Seek Criminal Investigation of Justice Thomas Over Travel and Gifts

The senators said the Supreme Court justice’s failure to disclose lavish gifts and luxury travel showed a “willful pattern of disregard for ethics laws.”

Justice Clarence Thomas, wearing a dark suit and red tie, sits next to his wife, Virginia Thomas, who is wearing a red dress.

By Maya C. Miller

Reporting from Washington

Two top Democratic senators have asked the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation of Justice Clarence Thomas for possible violations of federal ethics and tax laws.

Senators Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Ron Wyden of Oregon sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick B. Garland last week asking that he appoint a special counsel to investigate Justice Thomas’s failure to disclose lavish gifts , luxury travel , a loan for a recreational vehicle and other perks given to him by wealthy friends.

The request further intensified efforts by Senate Democrats to scrutinize Justice Thomas’s conduct at a time when they are trying to force Supreme Court justices to comply with stricter ethics and financial disclosure rules.

“We do not make this request lightly,” the senators wrote in a joint statement. “Supreme Court justices are properly expected to obey laws designed to prevent conflicts of interest and the appearance of impropriety and to comply with the federal tax code.”

“No government official should be above the law,” they added.

Specifically, the senators asked that a special counsel investigate whether Justice Thomas violated federal ethics and tax laws by failing to disclose as income the $267,000 he received in forgiven debt for a luxury R.V.

The senators wrote that Justice Thomas had “repeated opportunities” to explain his failure to disclose the gifts to the Senate Finance Committee, of which Mr. Wyden is the chairman, as well as the Judiciary Committee’s panel on federal courts, which Mr. Whitehouse leads.

They also accused Justice Thomas of showing a “willful pattern of disregard for ethics laws,” behavior that they said surpassed that of other government officials who have been investigated by the Justice Department for “similar violations.”

A spokeswoman for the Supreme Court did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump expected to announce his VP running mate today as RNC gets underway

By Fin Gómez , Kathryn Watson

Updated on: July 15, 2024 / 3:20 PM EDT / CBS News

Update: Trump announced he has selected Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate. Read the latest here . Our earlier story is below.

Former President Donald Trump has selected his vice presidential running mate and will announce his pick ahead of the Republican National Convention's roll call to formalizing his nomination Monday afternoon, according to sources familiar with the plans.

A Republican source with knowledge of the process tells CBS News the "pick is in" for Trump's running mate, and will be announced on the convention floor shortly after 4:30 p.m. ET.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio has been informed that he was not selected to be Trump's running mate, according to sources familiar with the conversation.

Two sources also say that North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum has also been notified that he will not be Trump's running mate.

The RNC 's first floor session got underway at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, close to 2 p.m., with speakers and votes on party business running into the night.

Fox News' Bret Baier said on air earlier in the day that Trump told him the VP announcement would come Monday.

Top contenders for the vice presidential slot included Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, Burgum, Rubio and Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina. Vance was spotted leaving his home in Ohio on Monday morning.

Security at the RNC, which was already expected to be tight, has been increased further after Saturday's failed attempt on Trump's life. But the RNC is otherwise scheduled to take place as planned.
