Lamy Safari Fountain Pen Nib Size Comparison

So, you've decided to start your adventure in the wonderful world of fountain pens. Kudos to you and welcome aboard! The Lamy Safari is one of the top choices for starter fountain pens for their durability, writing quality, and affordable price. To help you select your ideal Lamy nib size, we compare the common LZ50 steel nib sizes in the video below.

Lamy Safari Nib Sizes

Here are some general comments regarding fountain pen nib sizing how Lamy Safari nib size comparison corresponds to other well-known brands. Much like clothes and shoes with arbitrary letter sizing (S, M, L, XL), nib sizes have a similar sizing designation (EF, F, M, and B). Since there isn't any international standard for what each of those sizes represent, we make relative comparisons. For example, pen enthusiasts know that Western (German and Italian) nib sizes are about a size thicker than Eastern (Japanese) nib sizes. Lamy Safari nib size comparison shows that Lamy does fall into the category as a Western nib, writing a size thicker than most Pilot, Sailor, or Platinum pens. The line weight of a Lamy nib is also thicker than many European brands. So, a Lamy EF will write more like a Jowo/Bock F nib.

Fun fact: most Europeans will refer to the nib sizes by their letter abbreviation. They would say, "I prefer writing with a B nib" instead of, "I prefer writing with a broad nib."

Extra Fine (EF)

The Lamy extra fine provides the thinnest line that works the best on various types of paper. Prefer writing small, slow, and neat? An extra fine is an ideal nib size for you. Lefties: if dry time is a concern, an extra-fine line will dry quickest, especially if paired with a fast-drying ink.

The next size up provides a slightly thicker line with an incrementally higher degree of smoothness and flow. Fine is a best seller for its general purpose writing ability.

At this point size, we begin to see more depth of the ink color and a greater feeling of smoothness. Keep in mind the type of paper you write on when choosing this nib size and up. If you don't have access to premium, fountain pen-friendly paper, then you either need to select a smaller nib size or upgrade your notebooks and stationery. For this comparison, we selected a Rhodia dot grid pad with 80gsm paper.

The Lamy broad nib is the smoothest round nib of this set, providing an ample flow and thick line. This nib size is best suited for large and fast handwriting styles.

Calligraphy (1.1mm, 1.5mm, and 1.9mm)

Lamy offers its stub calligraphy nib in a 1.1mm, 1.5mm, and 1.9mm size. Instead of a rounded ball tip, the calligraphy nib has a flat, broad edge for drawing thick downstrokes and thin horizontal strokes. This line variation adds instant flair to everyday handwriting.

lamy safari m vs f

While I wouldn't recommend the calligraphy stub nibs for fountain pen newbs, if you're going to learn calligraphy styles like italic, blackletter, roman and unical, then go for it.

Why pick one when you can have them all? Lamy LZ50 nibs are interchangeable on Safari , AL-Star , Studio , Logo , Joy , Scala , Nexx , and CP1 . All you have to do is get a little tape. Stick the tape on the base of the metal nib, then slide it out with your thumb. Slide the new nib straight in over the rails of the feed. You're good to go. Just make sure the fountain pen is cleaned out before swapping nibs to avoid inky messes.

Lamy LZ50 stainless steel nibs can be purchased separately in both the silver and black-plated styles. The difference is only in appearance. The black nibs match nicer with the black trim Safari pens.

This year, we're expecting several exciting and colorful Lamy pens, including a set of pastel Safari pens. Let us know in the comments which Lamy you're looking forward to this year and which nib size or sizes you'll be getting.

Comparing the LAMY vista, safari and AL-star

It's a common question. What's the difference between the LAMY vista ,   LAMY safari , and   LAMY AL-star ? I remember asking the same thing in my early fountain pen days, because I would read about these popular pens all the time. These are all staple pens in the fountain pen community with a loyal following. This video is intended to clarify exactly what each pen offers and what sets them apart from each other.

Here are the main differences:

  • The safari and vista are the exact same pen, except the vista is clear (vista means "view")
  • The safari and AL-star are (essentially) the same dimensions, the AL-star is a hair bigger in diameter but not noticeably
  • The AL-star is made of aluminum and the safari is made of plastic, the aluminum tends to dent and scratch a little easier than the plastic
  • The grips on the safari and vista match the rest of the pen, the AL-stars all have smoky translucent grips regardless of color
  • The AL-star is slightly heavier (22g) than the safari and vista (17g)
  • All LAMY pens (except the LAMY 2000 ) have interchangeable LAMY nibs in EF, F, M, B (both steel and black) and 1.1mm, 1.5mm, 1.9mm italics (steel only)
  • Both the safari and AL-star come in a wide range of colors, and LAMY releases limited edition colors for both on a regular basis. The vista is only available in clear.
  • All three pens accept both the Z28 LAMY converters, as well as proprietary LAMY ink cartridges, the vista also accepts the Z27 converter

LAMY Safari: A Comprehensive Guide

The LAMY Safari is a minimalist favorite in the world of writing instruments. Since its launch in the eighties, the LAMY Safari has expanded from fountain pens to include other writing instruments, like rollerballs , ballpoints , and mechanical pencils . LAMY didn’t stop there: a pen made of aluminum known as the AL-Star soon joined the family, followed by the Vista and Lx . In this guide, we’ll discuss the unique features of the Safari and its extended family.

  • Laser-engraved and PVD-coated nib

  • Available as a fountain pen and rollerball pen

LAMY’s product design is guided by the Bauhaus principle in which form follows function. The LAMY Safari’s designers applied this philosophy to develop a fountain pen that was both utilitarian and appealing to all ages. Since many European schools use fountain pens to teach beginner writers, it was important to create a pen that could stand up to everyday use. To that end, the LAMY Safari is made using sturdy materials and has thoughtful features for a durable and ergonomic pen.

ABS Body

The nibs can be easily switched out to fit any occasion. From tiny notes to bold calligraphy, a Safari can do it all. Read our guide to learn how you can swap nibs on LAMY Safari fountain pens easily.

Another useful feature on the fountain pen is the ink window on the barrel. It lets you know how much ink you have left in your cartridge or converter.

Note that some LAMY Safari fountain pens may come with ink residue on the nib from being dip-tested at the LAMY factory. As with all fountain pens, we recommend cleaning your LAMY Safari before using it.

LAMY Safari Fountain Pen Lineup

LAMY releases special inks to accompany some limited edition pens. Below, we’ll show you how to install an ink cartridge.

Insert the converter into the grip section.

1. Remove the cardboard ring from the pen's barrel. Insert the cartridge into the pen’s grip section. There’s no need to push the cartridge down completely.

Twist the barrel back onto the grip section.

2. Twist the barrel back onto the grip section. Attaching the barrel automatically punctures the ink cartridge.

Leave the pen standing up to saturate the nib.

3. Set the pen aside with the nib pointing down. It may take up to an hour for the ink to reach the feed.

LAMY Safari Rollerball Pen Features

Externally, the LAMY Safari rollerball looks quite similar to its fountain pen sibling, though there are a few small differences.

For example, the finial on top of the cap has a simple line rather than a cross. The rollerball also does not have an ink viewing window.

LAMY Safari Rollerball Pen Lineup

1. Begin by removing the grip from the pen barrel.

Place the refill inside the grip of the pen.

2. Place the refill inside the grip of the pen.

Twist the grip back on the pen barrel.

3. Twist the grip back on the pen barrel.

LAMY Safari Ballpoint Pen Features

The LAMY Safari ballpoint was thoughtfully designed to share a design aesthetic with its Safari siblings, while also having its own unique features. The pen swaps out the cap for a retractable mechanism that makes it easy to write at a moment's notice. Like the rollerball pen, the ballpoint has a molded grip section that is less pronounced while still providing guidance for an ergonomic grip.

The pen comes with a smooth-writing ballpoint refill. The ink isn't particularly vivid or dark, but we find it suitable for everyday use. Plus, a ballpoint will write on surfaces like receipt paper, so it's especially handy to keep with you in a purse or bag.

LAMY Safari Ballpoint Pen Lineup

1. Remove the nose cone from the barrel.

Place the refill inside the barrel of the pen.

2. Place the refill inside the barrel of the pen.

Twist the nose cone back on the pen barrel.

3. Make sure the refill is firmly seated in the pen before screwing on the nose cone.

LAMY Safari Mechanical Pencil Lineup

The included eraser can be replaced with the LZ18 eraser refill . While it erases cleanly, it's also fairly small. We recommend having a separate eraser if you erase frequently or need to erase large sections.

Remove the eraser refill completely.

1. Remove the eraser refill under the eraser cap completely.

Insert one stick of lead into the pencil barrel.

2. Insert one stick of lead into the pencil barrel.

Put the eraser refill back on. Click to advance the lead.

3. Put the eraser refill and cap back on. Click to advance the lead.

LAMY regularly releases limited edition colors for the Safari, AL-Star, and Lx. The unique colors are popular among color enthusiasts and LAMY collectors alike. You can view past colors in the tables below.

Lamy Safari Fountain Pen Review: All-Around Favorite for Any Writer

If you’re a budding pen enthusiast, you’ve probably heard of the Lamy Safari fountain pen. It was one of the first fountain pens I ever bought — and helped grow my love of pens.

This iconic writing instrument has been a popular choice for both beginners and seasoned pen lovers for decades, known for its sleek design with cool color options and high-quality nibs.

In this review, I’ll delve into the history of the Lamy Safari , its design and aesthetics, nib options and writing experience, as well as its filling mechanisms and ink capacity, and share some of my thoughts as to why it’s such a great pen.

History of the Lamy Safari Fountain Pen

The Lamy Safari has been available since the early 1980s when it was first introduced in Germany. It was designed by Wolfgang Fabian, with a focus on creating an affordable and reliable pen that was suitable for use by both children and adults.

Origins and Design Philosophy

Fabian’s design philosophy is reflected in the pen’s name, Safari, which suggests durability and reliability in harsh environments. The pen’s aesthetic is also inspired by Fabian’s desire to create a writing instrument that was simple, practical, and modern, with a focus on functionality over style.

The Safari fountain pen was designed to be a workhorse pen that could be used in a variety of settings, from the classroom to the boardroom. Its lightweight design and comfortable grip make it easy to use for extended periods of time, while its sturdy construction ensures that it can withstand the wear and tear of everyday use. If you’re looking for a daily writer, this is a great option.

One of the key features of the Lamy Safari fountain pen is its interchangeable nibs. The pen comes with a steel nib as standard, but users can easily swap it out for a different size or material depending on their writing needs — even offering left-handed nibs for writers . This versatility has made the Lamy Safari a favorite, who appreciate the ability to customize their writing experience without having to buy a new pen every time.

I recently ordered a new set of nibs for my Safari. I had a medium and wanted to try a fine, so as much as I’d love a collection of Safari’s, it was a lot cheaper to get a new nib.

Evolution of the Lamy Safari Series

Over the years, the Lamy Safari fountain pen has evolved in various ways. New materials and color options have been introduced, as well as different nib sizes and types . Today, the Lamy Safari is still going strong, with a loyal fan base that appreciates its quality and affordability.

In recent years, Lamy has expanded the Safari series to include other types of pens, such as rollerballs and ballpoints. These pens retain the same design aesthetic and functional features as the fountain pen, making them a popular choice for those who prefer a different writing style.

The Safari is one of the best beginner fountain pens for those who are just starting out with fountain pens or who want a reliable workhorse pen for everyday use. Its combination of quality, versatility, and affordability has made it a classic in the world of fountain pens.

Here is a comparison of the Safari and some of its most popular competitors:

Please note that prices may vary based on the retailer and location. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it’s best to check with specific retailers or manufacturers.

Design and Aesthetics

The Lamy Safari fountain pen is unmistakable in its design, with its sleek lines. It is available in a variety of materials and colors, ranging from bright and bold to more subdued shades.

But the Lamy Safari is not just a pretty pen. It is also designed for functionality and ease of use. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or a beginner, this pen is a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable writing tool.

Material and Color Options

The pen’s body is typically made of lightweight, durable resin, but there are also models available in aluminum and stainless steel. The resin models are particularly popular due to their affordability and wide range of color options. From classic blacks and whites to vibrant purples and blues, there is a color for every taste.

I love the bright yellow, so when I saw it, I had to grab it.

lamy safari m vs f

The aluminum and stainless steel models, on the other hand, offer a more premium feel and are perfect for those who want a pen that feels substantial in their hand.

Clip and Cap Design

The pen’s clip and cap are also notable design features. The clip is not just for show — it is sturdy and reliable, allowing you to easily clip the pen to your pocket or notebook without fear of it falling off. The cap is designed to prevent ink from drying out and allows for easy opening and closing, so you can quickly jot down your thoughts without any fuss.

But the cap also serves another purpose. It is designed to be posted on the back of the pen while you write, giving the pen a longer and more balanced feel in your hand. This is particularly useful for those who prefer a heavier pen or like to write for extended periods of time.

Ergonomics and Grip

The Lamy Safari fountain pen is designed with ergonomics in mind, providing a comfortable grip for extended writing sessions. The triangular grip ensures that your fingers are properly spaced and allows for a more natural and relaxed grip. This is especially important for those who suffer from hand fatigue or cramping when writing for long periods of time.

I’ve spent a lot of time journaling with my Lamy Safari and haven’t gotten some of the hand cramps I have with other pens.

The grip is also made of a non-slip material, which ensures that the pen won’t slip out of your hand, even if your palms get sweaty. This feature is particularly useful for those who live in hot or humid climates or for those who tend to get nervous when writing in important situations.

Overall, the Lamy Safari fountain pen is a great choice for anyone who values both form and function. Its sleek design, range of colors and materials, and comfortable grip make it a joy to use, whether you’re writing a novel or just jotting down a quick note.

Nib Options and Writing Experience

The Lamy Safari fountain pen is a popular choice among fountain pen enthusiasts for its variety of nib options and smooth writing experience. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just starting out, the Lamy Safari has a nib option that will suit your needs.

lamy safari nib extra fine close up

One of the standout features of the Lamy Safari fountain pen is its variety of nib options. There are several different sizes and types of nibs available, ranging from fine to broad and even flexible. The nibs are made of high-quality stainless steel and are available in a range of sizes. Whether you need a fine nib for detailed work or a broad nib for bolder strokes, there is a nib option for you.

Nib Materials and Sizes

The Lamy Safari fountain pen’s nibs are made of high-quality stainless steel, which ensures durability and longevity. The nibs are available in a range of sizes, from extra fine to broad, allowing you to choose the perfect size for your writing needs. The nibs are also designed to be easily replaceable, so you can switch them out if you prefer a different size or type.

If you’re a leftie, you’re in luck. Lamy offers a left-handed Safari nib model, so you can enjoy writing too.

Lamy Safari Left-Hander Nib - Black

Lamy sells Safari pens that come with the leftie nib. So right out of the box, you're good to go.

Ink Flow and Smoothness

The Safari is known for its smooth writing experience, with consistent ink flow and minimal skipping. It’s also compatible with a variety of popular ink brands . The pen’s nibs are designed to provide a consistent flow of ink , ensuring that your writing is always smooth and effortless. The ink flow is also adjustable, so you can customize it to your liking. The pen’s ergonomic design ensures a comfortable grip, even during long writing sessions.

Writing Samples and Comparisons

If you’re considering purchasing a Lamy Safari, it’s important to try it out for yourself. However, there are numerous online reviews and writing samples available, allowing you to get a sense of its capabilities before making a purchase. You can compare the Safari to other fountain pens in its price range to see how it stacks up in terms of writing experience, design, and value.

Here are a few tests from some of the notebooks I own with varying paper weights . If you want to see the best notebooks for fountain pens, check out this post .

With these, there is some ghosting and a touch of bleedthrough, depending on the paper. I’m also using a dark blue ink which is big heavier.

Ghosting doesn’t bother me. But if it’s something that annoys you, then you may want to go for a notebook with a heavier GSM.

This doesn’t work well on standard paper like Field Notes.

lamy safari m vs f

There’s a lot of feathering and heavy ghosting on the other side.

Filling Mechanisms and Ink Capacity

The Lamy Safari fountain pen is a versatile writing instrument that offers a range of filling mechanisms to suit your needs. Whether you prefer the convenience of disposable ink cartridges or the elegance of a traditional piston filler, the Lamy Safari has got you covered.

lamy safari m vs f

I’ve used both converters and cartridges for my Lamy pens.

Cartridge/Converter System

The standard filling system for the Lamy Safari fountain pen is the cartridge/converter system. This is a popular option among fountain pen enthusiasts. It’s easy to clean and refill your pen with ink. With this system, you can choose between using disposable ink cartridges or using a converter to fill the pen from a bottle of ink.

One of the advantages of the cartridge/converter system is that it is very easy to use. Insert a new ink cartridge into the pen or attach the converter and dip the nib into a bottle of ink. It’s a great option for if you’re new to fountain pens or prefer a low-maintenance writing experience.

Lamy T10 Assorted Colour Pack Fountain Pen Ink Cartridges

Piston Filler Option

For those who prefer a more traditional filling mechanism, the Lamy Safari fountain pen has a piston filler option. It allows you to fill your pen directly from an ink bottle. That lets you write a lot longer longer before needing to refill.

The piston filler system is a classic filling mechanism that has been used in fountain pens for decades. It works by using a piston to draw ink up from a bottle and into the pen’s reservoir. This provides a high ink capacity, which is ideal for those who write frequently or for long periods of time.

Ink Capacity Comparison

Depending on the filling mechanism you choose, the ink capacity of the Lamy Safari fountain pen will vary. The cartridge/converter system provides a moderate amount of ink. Each cartridge or converter fills the pen with about 1.5 to 2 milliliters of ink.

On the other hand, the piston filler option allows for a much greater capacity. With this system, you can fill the pen with up to 1.35 milliliters of ink. That’s more than double the amount provided by a single cartridge or converter.

Ultimately, the choice between the cartridge/converter system and the piston filler option comes down to personal preference. If you prefer a low-maintenance writing experience and don’t mind refilling your pen more frequently, the cartridge/converter system may be the best option for you. However, if you value a high ink capacity and enjoy the traditional elegance of a piston filler, the Lamy Safari fountain pen with a piston filler option may be the perfect choice.

Best of Nizhny Novgorod

Alright, I can almost hear you say: “oh geez man, let me just stay in Nizhny for a few months to make sure that I experience everything you wrote.” I suppose you are right, not all will study in Nizhny, nor work there, some will just pass by and so on. If you do not have months to explore the city, but only a few days, perhaps just one, what then? Where to go and what to eat? Well, without much humility, I would strongly recommend you visit the following spots first and eat at these fine establishments before anywhere else. These are the must haves of Nizhny, according to yours truly!

DO AND SEE!

  • See the city’s Kremlin with your own eyes, and maybe visit the State Russian Art Museum there if you have the time.
  • Go to the lower side to gawk at the Cathedral of Aleksander Nevsky and all the goodies it holds.
  • Spend some time in the gorgeous Switzerland Park and watch a sunset there, or perhaps travel to the stars at Planetarium 1.
  • Appreciate the unique ornaments of the State Bank on the main pedestrian street, Bol’shaya Pokrovskaya.
  • Walk down Chkalov’s Stairs and then walk along the Volga until you visit the beautiful Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

lamy safari m vs f

EAT AND DRINK!

  • Savour the finest ramen this city (and perhaps the entire Federation) has to offer at Fukuramen.
  • Eat some decent pizza at either Yula or Pech, depending on which bank of the Oka you are exploring at the time.
  • Enjoy the company and service of the finest people in town by grabbing a mug of beer in Freakadely.
  • Go to Öö if you want to taste the best cocktails in town instead, in an almost hidden basement no less!
  • Head to Gellert for the best beer in town as well as some quick and rather affordable grubs.
  • Have some Cinnabon rolls at Cinnabon alongside with a hot drink of your choice to survive the Russian winter.
  • Try a business lunch at Skoba, with their own unique takes on many modern dishes.

lamy safari m vs f

Well, there you go. Almost a year spent in an unassuming “little” Russian city, one that surprised me at every turn, and one that made me say “thank you” to my former self for choosing to come here just a few months earlier. It was an amazing stay to say the least, and I did not even explore the outlying areas of the city, so, in all honesty, this guide can be expanded sometime in the future quite easily. I cannot say for sure whether I will be back to Nizhny at any point, but if I do, I know that I will be happy to do so. It feels quite weird to be able to put months of my experience into such a short guide, but if this will help anyone out there who is willing to come and enjoy this city, then I guess it will be doing its job just right. I wish you all good luck and best of times!

The Best Things to Do in Nizhny Novgorod

Chkalovskaya Lestnica

Nizhny Novgorod, founded in 1221, is one of the oldest cities in Russia, so is home to an array of historic attractions. If you’re headed to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and happen to find yourself in Nizhny Novgorod, it would be an absolute shame to miss out on seeing the city. Here are the best things to see and do.

Go back in time on bolshaya pokrovskaya.

If you’re a fan of the Golden Age of Russian literature, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya is the place for you to go. As one of the city’s central streets, long lines of well-preserved 19th-century buildings stretch along both sides. It’s not only the architecture that will transport you back in time: sculptures of past inhabitants of the town, each with a story to tell, will make you feel as if you were a character in a Dostoevsky novel.

Have a picnic on the riverbank

The Chkalov Staircase, consisting of almost 600 stairs, leads from the Kremlin to the riverbank. On a sunny day, after a long walk around the Kremlin, head down to the Volga river, stroll along it and have lunch sitting on one of the benches placed near the boardwalk.

See the river from above

A cable car runs above the river from Nizhny Novgorod to Bor, a town on the other side of the Volga river. It is often used by locals as a means of public transport and the views from it are breathtaking. Spend an afternoon going to Bor and back; a trip that is most certainly worth your time.

Spend an afternoon in space

In a district just outside the city centre you’ll find a very special monument dedicated to Gromozeka, a well-loved character from a sci-fi Soviet cartoon. Gromozeka, whose metal sculpture can now be found on the playground in Nizhny Novgorod, was a friendly alien archaeologist from a far-away planet called Chumaroz. A few benches around the monument are hidden in what look like USSR space helmets. A must-see for all the space geeks out there.

Pelikan M200 and Lamy Safari: How do they compare?

Greetings. I am hoping to learn folks' views on the similarities and differences of the Pelikan M200 and the Lamy Safari. Both appear to be lightweight pens, but I have only used the Safari.

Thanks to all!

Wow... where to start?

The Safari feels much bigger in the hand than the 200. It also has flats on the section for your fingers, while the 200 has a conventional round section to grip.

The 200 is a piston filler, and the Safari uses cartridges or a converter.

I have the idea that the Safari is a high-end student's pen and the 200 is a low-end grown up's pen.

There's more to it, but that's a start...

hbquikcomjamesl

Bill's right. Or to sum up, they compare like apples and oranges.

Pelikan M200s are built like tanks. I'm sure the same is true of Lamy Safaris, but the M200 is built like a tank without actually looking like it's built like a tank.

With any plunger-fill Pelikan, the nibs are interchangable, and field-replaceable without tools. In my experience, a gold-plated steel M200 nib will last several years of heavy use (or until tweaked, whichever comes first), and a barrel will typically last through at least 2 nibs. I've also found that even if you drop the pen onto a hard floor, nib-first, you can usually straighten it with needle-nose pliers to the point where it will function, and to a point where it's usable while you are waiting for a replacement.

Please see my "penbashing" project post, for my attitude about preferring pens that are designed to be filled from a bottle, without being disassembled.

Both are right.

The Lamy Safari is a higher end students pen - usually the pen you use after the Lamy ABC or Pelikano. Because of this the Safari has replacable nibs and the nibs are quite inexpensive. A Safari is the carry along pen. I simply put it into my trouser pocket or backpack. I fill it with staining ink or controversially discussed inks like Noodlers. I simply take the risk.

The M200 is a higher quality pen. Not a students pen like the Safari.

You can insert a gold nib if you want and it is built to last.

I have purchased my M200s about 20 years ago and they still work flawless.

Museum Piece

Rather than contrasting as has been done accurately so far let me just say that both are great, lightweight, sturdy pens. I had an M200 first, then a Safari. Like both. (Okay, this is a Pelikan forum and I do have a few Pelikans so I love Pels) but I think highly of the Safari and it's relatives the Vista and the Al-Star.

Greetings. I am hoping to learn folks' views on the similarities and differences of the Pelikan M200 and the Lamy Safari. Both appear to be lightweight pens, but I have only used the Safari.   Thanks to all!   UsFour

I've got both, and I like them both. The Safari is cheap, nearly indestructible, and has a nice modern design.

The Pelikan is not so cheap, smaller, thinner, holds more ink (compared to Safari converter), and is a smoother writer. But I woudn't put it in my jeans pocket or expose it to abuse the way I do the Safari.

I typically use my Safari on the road, or at school/work where people are likely to borrow it. I take notes with it, use it for small writing (EF nib), filling out forms, etc. It's also good for sketching as the nib gives nice feedback and is a bit dry.

I like using my Pelikan when I'm going to write something long- letters, my journal, thesis notes, summaries. It's smoother and wetter to write with (no more comfortable in hand though). It's a real writer's pen, I think.

Both of them have user-replaceable nibs, and if you don't want to spent so much on an M200 nib, the M150 nibs are close to the same size and fit perfectly, and they're about $15, not much more than a Safari nib.

Both great pens, but very very different. For a closer price comparison you might want to think about the M150, which is a bargain, but it may be too small if you like the size of the Safari.

Thanks to all who have been answering. I'm pretty much a dumb novice on all of this. After I made the original post, I actually tried to delete it, as I thought I might have crossed the line somehow by introducing another line of pens into the discussion. As the discussion has evolved, though, I have been hearing from Pelikan aficianados, which is what I was hoping for in the first place. So, maybe no harm, no foul? I hope so, anyway.

I asked because each pen is light, apparently, and fairly cheap. I know the M200 is smaller. I use the Safari when working on student papers and writing notes "out there" on my own writing. I really enjoy that pen -- surpringly, given the light weigh -- but it works very well. As Neill suggests, though, I am thinking another, perhaps more "writerly" pen might be found in the M200, when used at home. I have also ordered a Lamy Studio, but have come into $50.00 by surprise and may splurge on one more pen before sitting back and just writing again, without "jonesing" for more pens. :0) I really like the looks of the M200 -- and the light weight intrigues as well, as the Lamy is light. I suppose the shorter length is a question -- but I have a Cross roller-ball for underlining -- and it's pretty short and just fine. Unfortunately, Tallahassee is pretty low on fountain pen choices -- some Safaris at one store and some Phileas and random other FP's at Office Depot, and that's pretty much it. I play golf as well and so know the value of feel in the hands, but things are as they are here for now... That's why these conversations are so helpful.

If anyone has time to comment on nibs as well, I know I work best with the Lamy M nib. Is the Pelikan M200 M nib similar in the size of the line?

Anyway, thanks again to all. Please feel free to throw in any more thoughts you might have. I appreciate the opportunity to learn!

HDoug

I have both and I've been rotating between the two all week. Since you already have a Safari, might as well go for the M200, then you'll have a modern Bauhausy (not a real word, I know) pen, and a traditional writerly writer.

The M that came on my Vista was way wider than the M that came on my Pelikan, but I don't know if that's typical, or just manufacturing variation.

And slightly OT, people seem almost apologetic about how inexpensive these pens are. I don't think they're "cheap," I think that's just what it costs to make a good fountain pen. Just my opinion.

IIRC the Lamy M is fairly fat and so you'd probably be fine with a Pelikan M as well. But it's been a while and others may need to correct me.

bdngrd

I am not sure which would be more Bauhaus- a black M200 or a black or charcoal Lamy? When I think of Bauhaus, I think Lamy 2000 or Rotring 600, but not so much Pelikan M series. Any thoughts?

The Danitrio Fellowship

Thank you usfour for asking this question. I recently came into about $100 and am considering my first "grownup" FP. Pelikan seems to be a popular brand and I was considering trying to find one about the same size as my safari.

Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional.

Never be afraid to try something new.

Remember, amateurs built the ark.

Professionals built the Titanic.

I highly recommend the Pelikan M200; I have 3 of them in my breast pocket (along with an old-style M150, a pen-bashed Pelikano, and a Maglite) as I write this, and please see my earlier comments, particularly about Pelikan M200s being built like tanks.

Lately, I've been doing business with a guy named Nussbaum in Arizona, who does business under the name "isellpens.com." He has M200s for about what they cost 20 years ago, and he carries replacement nibs (at his prices, you could almost buy two, or buy one with a bottle of ink and a spare nib).

And have we met on another BBS? Or was it somebody else using the same screen name?

To hbquikcomjamesl. This is the only BBS I know for FPs, so someone probably "hijacked" my name (lol). If it was somewhere else, let me know which one. I went pricing at about 15 different online stores and isellpens price was the best by $15, so my order goes to him. Do I have to use Pelikan ink? I like Private Reserve in my safari. Any brands to stay away from. Thankws for the info and guidance. I'm learning alot and I can feel the money running through my fingers.

Do I have to use Pelikan ink? I like Private Reserve in my safari. Any brands to stay away from?

You don't have to use Pelikan ink. My Pels have always used Noodler's and never touched a drop of Pelikan ink. But there is some controversy about using highly saturated inks like Private Reserve and Noodler's. But check out t his gorgeous post in Pelikan Blue-Black by TrevorML in a recent thread.

There's one brand of very expensive fountain pens (in terms of features, what I've seem seemed grossly overpriced) of which I've heard horror stories about the plumbing clogging up from using other brands of ink, but Pelikan, so far as I'm aware, will take any fountain pen ink you feed it, with nary a complaint.

And as I recall, the other Imzadi I've encountered was on the Pocket Books Star Trek board.

hbquikcomjamesl, not me. Imzadi is Betazed for "my beloved" and is the term of affection Troi used for Will Ryker.

Uh, yes, I know what it means.

Let's talk about pens.

Late to the party. I have both the Pelikan M200 and the Lamy Safari. Both are inexpensive, decent writers. The Lamy has a nib hard as nails, and will write through multipart forms. It's a little messy to fill from the bottle, as there is a little nook on the section that tends to accumulate ink that is hard to remove. The Pelikan has an easy-to-use piston fill that holds a ton of ink, and has a slightly softer steel nib. Both are light, the Pelikan is slightly smaller. The Safari looks very informal, the Pelikan would be at home in a dress shirt without notice. Take your pick, but I like the nib and piston fill of the Pelikan.

  1. Lamy Safari F Or M Nib

I have a Safari with an M nib and find it really smooth, but the line width is a bit too think for small writing. From the writing samples given above, it looks like there is a quite a difference between M and F, but not much noticeable different between F and XF. Although I have heard that F is smooth compared to the XF.

  7. Lamy nibs: EF, F or M? : r/fountainpens

M will be most consistent. Lamy EF could be anything from EF to broad and the QC may not be that good. If you want an EF, get a Sailor, Pilot or Platinum because they make such fine nibs a lot better than Lamy. Due to their tolerances there is a lot of overlap.

  8. Comparing the LAMY vista, safari and AL-star

The AL-star is slightly heavier (22g) than the safari and vista (17g) All LAMY pens (except the LAMY 2000) have interchangeable LAMY nibs in EF, F, M, B (both steel and black) and 1.1mm, 1.5mm, 1.9mm italics (steel only) Both the safari and AL-star come in a wide range of colors, and LAMY releases limited edition colors for both on a regular basis.

Lamy nibs (on Safaris anyways) are pretty inconsistant. I have a couple EFs and Fs. I have a F that puts down a thinner line than one of the EFs. One of my EFs is a little scratchy but the other is really smooth. Other than that the Safari is a great pen, if the grip doesn't bother you. SCPaul.

  22. Nizhny Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod is the sixth-largest city in Russia, the second-most populous city on the Volga, as well as the Volga Federal District. It is an important economic, transportation, scientific, educational and cultural centre in Russia and the vast Volga-Vyatka economic region, and is the main centre of river tourism in Russia.
