Wo ihr in und um Wien mit Alpakas und Lamas wandern könnt

Spazieren ist schön, spazieren mit tierischer Begleitung ist noch schöner! Deshalb haben wir uns nach Lama- und Alpakawanderungen in Wien und Umgebung umgesehen und sind fündig geworden.

Alpakas und Lamas gibt es in Wien nicht nur im Zoo, ihr könnt sie auch bei einer Wanderung oder einem Spaziergang treffen. Wo ihr hin müsst, um den flauschigen Vierbeinern zu begegnen, haben wir euch hier aufgeschrieben.

Alpaka-Spaziergang in Essling

Ja, auch das ist Wien: In Essling im 22. Bezirk sieht es zwar nicht mehr nach Großstadt aus, das macht uns aber gar nichts. Denn in der Natur fühlen sich Alpakas bestimmt wohler als im Großstadtdschungel. XundZeit veranstaltet regelmäßig Spaziergänge, bei denen euch Alpaka Fernando und seine Freunde begleiten (oder ihr sie). Anschließend gibt es noch ein Picknick im Grünen – einem entspannten Sonntag steht nichts mehr im Weg. Die Spaziergänge sind auch für Kinder geeignet, ihr könnt also die ganze Rasselbande mitbringen. Der Spaziergang dauert rund 45 Minuten. 

• 1220, Donaustadt

Wandern mit Alpakas in Rodaun

Weiter geht es nach Liesing , ans andere Ende von Wien. Auch hier, bei Alpaka Wandern Wien , könnt ihr entspannt und gemütlich mit den flauschigen Tieren wandern gehen. Euch stehen verschiedene Touren zur Auswahl, wie zweistündige oder dreistündige Wanderungen oder ein Besuch auf der Weide. Die Wanderungen starten mit einem Kennenlernen der Tiere. Während ihr dann mit den Alpakas über Wiesen und durch Wälder wandert, erzählen euch die Tourguides Wissenswertes über die Tiere. Die Touren könnt ihr für ein bis sechs Personen buchen und finden dann nur mit eurer Gruppe statt.

Alpaka- und Lamawanderungen in Mödling

Weiter geht es über die Stadtgrenzen hinaus, nach Niederösterreich: Südlich von Wien bieten die Alpaka- und Lama-Gefährten Wanderungen mit den Tieren an. Es gibt verschiedene Angebote, wie eine zweistündige Wanderung in Gesellschaft von Lamas und Alpakas. Hier geht es in die Eichkogel-Anninger-Gegend bei Mödling. Ihr könnt entweder exklusiv für eure Gruppe eine Tour buchen oder euch bei einer Wanderung mit anderen Teilnehmer*innen anschließen. Wenn ihr keine Wanderungen machen, sondern die Tiere einfach mal kennenlernen wollt, gibt es auch das Lama- und Alpakaerlebnis . Hier bekommt ihr eine Einführung in die Welt der Tiere, füttert und bürstet sie und macht einen kleinen Parcours mit ihnen.

• Niederösterreich

Lamatrekking in Kritzendorf

In Kritzendorf bei Klosterneuburg warten ebenfalls flauschige Vierbeiner auf euren Besuch. Bei den Weggefährten könnt ihr verschiedene Spaziergänge mit Lamas unternehmen. Es gibt offene Spaziergänge zu fixen Terminen, längerer Entschleunigungs- und Schweigewanderungen oder eine Märchenstunde für Kinder. Ihr könnt auch hier für eure Gruppe eine private Tour buchen. Alle Termine findet ihr auf der Website. Die Erlebnisse finden vor allem im Herbst, Winter und Frühling in Kritzendorf statt. In der wärmeren Jahreszeit sind die Weggefährten die meiste Zeit in Lichtenau im Waldviertel. Mit dem Auto erreicht ihr den dortigen Standort in rund einer Stunde und 15 Minuten.

Lamas und Alpakas im Naturpark Hohe Wand

Eine etwas weitere Strecke – die sich aber bestimmt lohnt – müsst ihr für die nächsten Wanderung zurücklegen. Im Naturpark Hohe Wand könnt ihr den Park gemeinsam mit Lamas und Alpakas erkunden. Die Spaziergänge finden jeden ersten Sonntag im Monat statt und dauern rund eineinhalb Stunden. Unterwegs kommt ihr auch an einer Futterstelle für Rothirsche vorbei, beim Ausgangspunkt erwarten euch außerdem Hasen, Ponys und Esel im Streichelzoo. Ausgangspunkt ist das Naturpark-Zentrum. Ihr könnt auch Touren exklusiv für eure Gruppe buchen.

• Wiener Neustadt (Land)

Wandern mit der Lamalady im Wienerwald

Ein Ausflug in den Wienerwald ist immer eine gute Idee! Besonders, wenn dort süße Lamas auf euch warten. Die Lamalady nimmt euch mit zu einer Auszeit in der Natur. Neben Lamawanderungen und Picknicks mit Lamas und Alpakas gibt es hier sogar tiergestützte Ausbildungen. Alle Angebote und die nächsten Termine findet ihr auf der Website. Der Standort liegt direkt im Grünen, zwischen Oed und Johannesberg in der Gemeinde Maria Anzbach. Von Wien aus erreicht ihr den Ausgangspunkt mit dem Auto in gut 40 Minuten.

• Sankt Pölten(Land)

Mit Alpakas wandern und Waldluft schnuppern

Ebenfalls im Wienerwald findet ihr die Lama- und Alpakawanderungen von Waldluft . Von der Homebase in Elsbach gehen die Touren los, die ihr entweder exklusiv für euch oder mit einer gemischten Gruppe unternehmen könnt. Davor erwartet euch aber noch ein kleiner Crashkurs für den richtigen Umgang mit den Vierbeinern. Insgesamt dauern die Wanderungen rund zwei Stunden. Ihr könnt die Tiere aber auch beim “Meet & Greet” auf der Weide kennenlernen oder beim Waldyoga entspannen. Die nächsten Termine findest du auf der Website von Waldluft. Von Wien bist du in gut 40 Minuten in Elsbach im Wienerwald.

Alpakaerlebnis im Marchfeld

Für unseren letzten Ausflug mit Alpakas geht es von Wien aus nach Osten: In Groissenbrunn erwartet euch das Alpakaerlebnis Marchfeldmühle mit Spaziergängen und Wanderungen im Marchfeld. Außerdem könnt ihr verschiedene Alpaka-Erlebnisse wie Hofführungen unternehmen. Eine Wanderung dauert rund 90 Minuten – ihr könnt online die freien Termine einsehen und sie direkt buchen. Wer Lust hat, kann im Hofladen stöbern und verschiedene Produkte aus Alpakawolle kaufen.

Alpakas sind ruhige Tiere, die uns den Stress des Alltags vergessen lassen. Gemeinsam mit ihnen zu wandern bedeutet, sich gemütlich fortzubewegen, und das in der wunderschönen Umgebung im Wiener Landschaftsschutzgebiet Wien – Rodaun.

Mit den Alpakas an eurer Seite spazieren wir auf leisen Sohlen durch Wälder und auf Wiesen und genießen dabei die wunderschöne Landschaft und atemberaubende Ausblicke.

Schnürt eure Wanderschuhe, genießt die Wanderung, erfahrt Wissenswertes über Alpakas und die Natur und kommt den außergewöhnlichen Tieren näher.

Lama-Mist zu vergeben

Für alle Gärtner und Hobbygärnter unter euch gibt es jetzt Lama-Mist, der aufgrund seiner Qualitäten als Dünger auch "Andengold" genannt wird. Anders als anderer Tierdung kann er direkt ohne Vorprozess als Kompost verwendet werden. 

Alle fleißigen Lama-Wanderer können sich gerne ein Küberl (oder mehr) mitnehmen. Bitte Küberl zum Anfüllen selbst mitbringen!!

Auch alle anderen Gärtner haben wir Rohmist (in ursprünglicher Form, nicht getrocknet und pulverisiert) zu vergeben.

Ich war mit meinen 24 "Löwen" bei Dorotheas Lamas + Alpakas. Meine Klasse war voll und ganz begeistert. Man merkte auch Dorotheas Leidenschaft für IHRE Lamas/Alpakas. Sie hat mit viel Geduld alles Notwendige und Interessante an die Kinder weitergegeben. Unser Spaziergang war so im Fokus der Lamas, dass meine Klasse die kleine Wanderung gar nicht auffiel. ;)) Jedenfalls empfehlenswert - ein echtes Lamaerlebnis! Sind wunderbare Tiere-entzückend! Es gibt wohl kein besseres Lob, als das aus dem Kindermund: " Das war unser schönster Ausflug, den wir je gemacht haben." " Die Tiere sind so lieb, ich mag mir eines mit nach Hause nehmen!"

Wir hatten heute einen wunderschönen Spaziergang in den Weinbergen mit Dorothea und ihren Lamas und Alpakas . Das Erlebnis mit den Tieren hat uns so gut gefallen, dass wir bald wieder kommen werden!

Ausgesprochen empfehlenswerte Exkursion für Schulklassen! Wir waren heute mit einer unserer Abschlussklassen (14jährige) auf Lamawanderung in Kritzendorf und ich muss sagen wir waren alle wirklich begeistert. Dorotheas Liebe zu ihren Tieren ist von Anfang an deutlich spürbar Mit sehr viel Fingerspitzengefühl erzählt sie zunächst allgemein von Lamas und Alpakas und vom Umgang mit diesen Tieren. Im Anschluss wird jedes einzelne Tier von seinem Charakter und Entwicklungsstand her vorgestellt, sodass die Schüler für sich eine gute Wahl beim Aussuchen des Tieres treffen können. Dorothea bereitet die Schüler darauf vor, was sie beim Führen der Tiere erwartet und wie man behutsam mit ihnen umgeht. Unsere Spazierweg durch die Au und entlang des Donauufers war großteils im Schatten der Bäume und somit für einen sehr warmen, sonnigen Junitag ideal. Wunderbar entspannend und gleichzeitig sehr ansprechend! Vielen herzlichen Dank, Dorothea!

Der Lamaspaziergang war sehr bereichernd! Wir waren 2 Stunden mit den Tieren unterwegs. Wir, als Lama- und Alpaka-Unerfahrene, haben dabei sehr viel gelernt und konnten den gemütlichen Spaziergang in vollen Zügen genießen. Ich würde das Erlebnis auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen.

Wir haben heute einen Lama - Alpakaspaziergang mit Dorothea unternommen! Nach einem Kennenlernen auf der Weide, mit vielen Informationen über die zwei Tierarten, sind wir gemütlich in den Weinbergen von Kritzendorf spazieren gegangen. Nun sind wir in Lamas und Alpakas verliebt und kommen bald wieder zu Euch! Vielen Dank für den schönen Vormittag!

Einfach cool! Wir haben eine Stunde gebucht und wurden total freundlich empfangen. Nach einem kurzen Kennenlernen dürften wir dann jeweils eines der Tiere führen und haben währenddessen viel über Lamas und Alpakas gelernt. Wir hatten wirklich Spaß und würden diese Erfahrung bei Dorothea und ihren Tieren wärmstens empfehlen. Sicher bis bald! - Moritz & Michelle

Walking with the fluffy alpacas and the good-natured llamas through the refreshing forest of the nature park is fun and brings a sparkle to the eyes of big and small animal lovers. Lamas sind die idealen Begleittiere für Wanderungen. Sie haben einen sanften Charakter, sind trittsicher, tragen bis zu 30 kg Gepäck und lassen sich auch von Kindern risikolos führen. Ihre freundliche aber keinesfalls aufdringliche Art macht jede Begegnung mit ihnen zu einem eindrucksvollen und unvergesslichen Erlebnis. Es ist gerade jetzt im Computerzeitalter wichtig uns und vor allem unseren Kindern wieder den Umgang mit Tieren näher zu bringen.

Mit unseren Lamas Luis, James, Santos und Diego verleihen wir auch Ihrem Schulwandertag einen exotischen Flair und machen ihn zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis!

Die Lamas tragen dabei freundlicherweise die Rucksäcke und transportieren den Proviant der Mitwanderer. So erleichtert merken die Kinder, abgelenkt von den Kleinkamelen, gar nicht wie viel Wegstrecke sie dabei zurücklegen.

Gewandert kann entweder bei uns im Leithagebirge oder man trifft sich sonst wo. Gerne reisen wir auch an und beginnen die Wanderung bei Euch, z.b. direkt vor der Schule.

Grillen und Chillen am Lagerfeuer

Ganztageswanderungen, Betriebs- und Vereinsausflüge

Nach einer knapp 2-stündigen Wanderung, bei der unsere Lamas den Proviant transportieren, erreichen wir eine Lichtung im Leithagebirge „Schöner Jäger“ bei der wir die Möglichkeit haben zu Grillen und zu Chillen. Die große Liegewiese mitten im Wald lädt auch dazu ein, auf mitgebrachten Decken, die Ruhe und Schönheit der Natur zu genießen. Vollkommen ausgeruht treten wir dann den Rückweg an.

Alternativ dazu ist es auch möglich mit unseren Lamas über das Leithagebirge nach Eisenstadt zur Gloriette zu wandern und in "die alm" einzukehren, sowie auch Wanderungen zur nahegelegenen Leithaau "Klein Caorle" zu unternehmen!

Schnupperwanderungen

Um uns und  unsere Lamas kennen zu lernen bieten wir auch Schnupperwanderungen an. Dabei wandern wir ca. 3 Stunden, begleitet von einem Lamero (so werden die Lamaführer genannt) mit seinen Lamas, durch das Leithagebirge. Einer Gipfelbezwingung des Sonnenberges (484m) und der Aussichtsplattform, mit Rundblick von Wien über den Schneeberg und die Wiener Neustädter Pforte bis zum Neusiedler See, steht nichts mehr im Wege. Wer es etwas gemütlicher haben will wählt alternativ dazu die nicht so alpine Tour zur Leithaau.

Auf diese Art, beschäftigt mit den Tieren, gehen auch Kinder gerne wandern!

Beim Wandern bestimmen die charakterstarken Tiere das Tempo und die Anzahl der Pausen während der Tour und entreißen uns so für einige Zeit aus unserem sonst so hektischen Alltag.

About Bell Travel

Company information.

Bell Travel Service are a premium coach travel company in Thailand, who were established in 1995 and specialise in running routes between Suvarnabhumi airport, Pattaya and Hua Hin. They offer both shared and private transfers and also offer different types of vehicles to use for journeys. Passengers can choose from their fleet of coaches that seat up to 40 people and mini vans which seat up to 10.

Their drivers have received extensive training and Bell Travel take passenger safety very seriously . Drivers are alcohol tested daily and before taking all journeys to prevent drink driving, and are not allowed to use the phone whilst driving except in the case of emergencies in which case a blue tooth headset should be used.

Coach and van drivers are both expected to obey any and all speed limits, to ensure safety as best as possible on Thailand’s dangerous roads. Coaches are also insured although individual private insurance is also highly recommended.

Bell Travel’s coaches are air-conditioned, no smoking vehicles that are maintained well and serviced frequently to keep to high safety standards.

The vans in the fleet are also air-conditioned and offer a good option for any groups looking for private transfers or people who dislike travelling on larger coaches. The cost of the coach journey between Bangkok and Pattaya is around THB400, whilst private transfers depend on the details of your journey.

Routes served by Bell Travel

Shared routes include Suvarnabhumi Airport to Pattaya, Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok to Pattaya, Pattaya to Bangkok and Pattaya to Suvarnabhumi Airport. Whilst private transfers have a greater degree of flexibility and you can choose specific pick up and drop off locations in both Bangkok and Pattaya. Private transfers can also be organised for any time of day and any day of the week, making them a great option for people with anti social timings of aeroplanes etc.

Suvarnabhumi Airport–Pattaya

Probably the most popular route of the company with buses leaving on hourly bases. From Pattaya , Bell Travel provides the earliest bus of the day to Suvarnabhumi which departs at 6am and gets to the airport before 8am – just in time to many morning departures. They also provide complimentary pick up from the hotels in the central Pattaya area which is really helpful as buses depart from the Northern Bus Station located a bit out of the main tourist activity area. Tickets cost THB250.

Suvarnabhumi Airport–Hua Hin

Buses from Suvarnabhumi to Hua Hin run every hour and a half and cost THB320. Travel time is about 4 hours. In Hua Hin buses arrive to New Hua Hin bus station in Phet Kasem Road.

Keep in mind

Passengers should be aware that boarding starts around 15 minutes before departure and although they endeavour to depart on time for all journeys, sometimes delays may take place.

Other useful information includes the fact that two bags that meet the baggage requirements can be included free of charge whilst the website details any additional costs.

If travelling to the airport, do allow some additional time to be on the safe side, though normally 2 hours from Pattaya and 4 hours from Hua Hin to Suvarnabhumi are a standard.

The positives of travelling with Bell Travel are that it is a relatively low cost and convenient way to travel between Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok and Pattaya and Hua Hin.

They also take safety standards seriously and work to ensure that all journeys take place with well trained drivers in well maintained coaches. It’s also great to be able to easily book online and choose from several different routes, whilst the coaches themselves are comfortable and have plenty of legroom.

It’s easy to buy tickets online or to contact the company through their website or by phone, and the routes between the two cities have several stops.

The downsides are that it is more expensive than some of the other coach services travelling the same route so if you are looking for a budget option this may not be the right choice for you.

You may also end up having to pay more if for any reason you need to make changes to your booking if circumstances change.

Travellers reviews

There have been a couple of reviews that suggest that sometimes service isn’t the friendliest and it can be a little chaotic at the airports when you’re trying to find your coach and get boarded.

Overall though, the vast majority of reviews of Bell Travel are very positive , and most passengers state that they found the experience simple, easy to book, cost effective and a comfortable journey.

Below is the public schedule of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. All events are free and open to the public unless noted. For ticketed events, people are requested to contact the organizers directly or visit the listed websites for further information on tickets.

For all teachings in Dharamsala, registration is required in order to attend. Registration begins a few days before the actual start of the teaching and ends the day before the first day of the teaching. Registration hours are from 9 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm at the Main Tibetan Temple (Tsuglhakhang) courtyard. For registration purposes, all foreigners need to bring copies of their passport, Indian visa and 'C' form. People living in India need to bring copies of their aadhaar card. A nominal fee of Rs. 10 will be charged.

For your information, as a long-standing policy His Holiness the Dalai Lama does not accept any fees for his talks. Where tickets need to be purchased, organizers are requested by our office to charge the minimum entrance fee in order to cover their costs only.

On September 30 and October 1, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will give two days of teachings on Chapter 8 (Meditation) of Shantideva's A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life (chodjug) in the mornings at the request of Taiwanese devotees and on October 2 His Holiness will attend a Long Life Prayer offering by the Taiwanese in the morning at the Main Tibetan Temple.

Vienna , capital of Austria , is one of the most charming cities in central Europe being the second most populous, after Berlin. The Dalai Lama on Tour, an Exile on Main Street

On his 15th trip to the United States, the Dalai Lama has been met by sold-out crowds from coast to coast. Tickets to his events have been bid up on eBay. He filled Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, and on Sept. 11 packed Washington National Cathedral, as 3,000 more people listened outside on the lawn. Scalpers did brisk business outside the basketball arena in Boston last Sunday selling last-minute tickets.

As he begins the first of nine days of events in New York, this son of Tibetan peasants is at the high point of his global fame as a religious leader, head of state, pop icon, multimedia phenomenon and ascetic Buddhist superstar.

The Dalai Lama has always drawn a small circle of devotees in this country, but the huge turnouts on this trip are testimony to a growing American fascination with Buddhist practices and the search for genuine spiritual heroes who profess nonviolence in an era of religious strife and disillusionment.

''I think I'm looking for something; I don't know quite what,'' said Vivian de Mello, of Providence, R.I., who is Catholic. Ms. de Mello paid $60 for a ticket in Boston on Sunday in what she called her quest to find a new religion.

''He makes me feel good, and I need that right now,'' said Michelle Caron, a financial controller from Medford, Mass., as she descended the stadium stairs after the event. ''Just his aura, and the simplicity.''

The Dalai Lama's popularity also owes something to the presence of his beatific visage on hundreds of books and videos, some which have recently crossed over to the mainstream market from religious and New Age audiences. One, ''The Art of Happiness,'' sold more than 1.2 million copies and was on The New York Times best-seller list for nearly two years.

There are more than 300 listings for Dalai Lama books on Amazon.com, said Lynn Garrett, religion editor of Publishers Weekly, though some are different editions of the same book.

''He is regarded as a religious voice, but he definitely crosses over into self-help,'' Ms. Garrett said.

As Tibet's leader in exile, the Dalai Lama is primarily concerned with pressing for Tibetan autonomy from Chinese rule. Some supporters say they worry that mass marketing of his image has diluted his message, but others say his celebrity status has only broadened the cause of Tibetan freedom as well as the appeal of Buddhism.

Among Tibetans and their supporters, the Dalai Lama's visibility is prompting some controversy, said Matthew Wiener, director of programming at the Interfaith Center of New York and its Buddhism analyst.

''That is a consistent internal debate and question about the more trendy the Dalai Lama gets, how does that affect cause of Tibetan freedom, and how does it affect the Buddhist message of compassion,'' Mr. Weiner said.

The Dalai Lama has lent his name to so many books and projects, said Yodon Thonden, executive director of the Isdell Foundation, which supports Tibetan causes, that ''in some ways it dilutes the impact of his presence.''

Nevertheless, Ms. Thonden said, his high profile is ultimately beneficial for the Tibetan cause.

The Dalai Lama gives permission to almost every request to use his name or likeness, many who know him say.

''He'll give a talk and someone will ask him if they can put it in a book, and he almost always says yes,'' said Amy B. Hertz, who as executive editor of Riverhead Books has published three recent Dalai Lama books, including ''The Art of Happiness.''

Mr. Wiener said the Dalai Lama had made a conscious decision to be highly public, partly motivated by a sense among Tibetans that their history of isolation left them vulnerable to the Chinese takeover.

''The reverse of that is to say, 'Hey, we have to get publicity, we have to get the word out about our problems,' '' Mr. Wiener said. ''The Dalai Lama's extroverted response is in large part the result of thinking they got it wrong.''

Advances and any profits from the books are usually divided between the authors and the Tibetan government-in-exile, Ms. Hertz said.

The Dalai Lama was born Lhamo Thondup to peasants in northeastern Tibet. At age 2, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the previous Dalai Lama and taken to the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, to be educated by Buddhist scholars and monks. He was enthroned in 1940, at the age of 5. Ten years later, China began its invasion of Tibet, and when China suppressed an uprising of Tibetans in 1959, the Dalai Lama fled to India. He has lived ever since in Dharamsala and has never been allowed by the Chinese to return to his native country.

His travels across the globe have helped him develop a mastery of the media event. At a news conference yesterday to start his visit in New York, he took the stage at an auditorium at the Guggenheim Museum, and, after a tempest of camera flashes, he asked the photographers to stop taking pictures. He peered leisurely into the audience and greeted familiar faces one by one. Then, with a broad smile, he told the photographers to return to work. ''Well, yes, flash!''

Tickets for teaching sessions at the Beacon Theater in Manhattan have long since sold out -- at $400 each, or $1,200 and $3,000 for V.I.P.'s and big donors. The steep prices are to defray the cost of advertising and producing the Dalai Lama's appearance this Sunday in Central Park, said Josh Baran, a publicist for the Dalai Lama's New York visit.

The Dalai Lama said recent contacts between Tibetans and Beijing were a ''good start,'' and described a delicately balanced approach to China. He said he had always stressed that China should not be isolated and that issues of human rights, democracy and freedom should be raised in a ''friendly atmosphere.''

In recent years, China has poured money into Tibet and encouraged ethnic Chinese to settle there, bringing economic growth but also questions about the future of Tibetan culture.

''Unfortunately, sometimes our Chinese brothers and sisters need a little pressure,'' he said, adding: ''And basically I feel pressure is not right. The friendly manner, the compassionate way, to educate them, explain to them and persuade them, that's the proper way.''

He did not always draw such attention. The Dalai Lama first came to the United States in an era of widespread fear of new religions and dangerous cults.

Jeffrey Hopkins, a professor of Tibetan Buddhist studies at the University of Virginia who served as the Dalai Lama's interpreter from 1979 to 1989, said: ''Twenty-five years ago, almost all the venues were small, people didn't know who he was, they had no idea where Tibet was, and they didn't know what religion to associate with him. They thought he might have been some far-out guru who maybe had selfish purposes.''

But as his popularity has grown, some Buddhist leaders have expressed concern about what they call ''bookstore Buddhists'' who buy his latest releases and adopt Asian trappings without delving deeply into Buddhist teachings.

''We need to adopt the wisdom practice,'' said Surya Das, a widely known American lama, ''not the Asian accouterments.''

Family experiences in Vorarlberg: Hiking with llamas and alpacas in the snow is an experience that features stunning views and excitement for all ages.

Horst Kuster and his llamas live in the best panoramic location on the Bartholomäberg above Schruns in Montafon. Together with hikers, they set off on a two-hour trekking tour in the footsteps of the miners to Kristberg, even in winter. The llamas carry the luggage and accompany them through the snow. Llamero Horst and hiking guide Imelda talk about the landscape, the people and Montafon traditions along the way.

Daniela from Montafon-Alpakas offers guided alpaca hikes in Gaschurn . After a short introduction, you hike with the five alpacas on leisurely trails through the forest. The total duration is 1.5h – 2h. Bookings can be made directly on the homepage www.montafon-alpakas.at.

Birget Knecht from Röns provides therapeutic programmes centred around hiking with llamas and alpacas. She would be happy to organise an individualised tour.

The “Hoamat G’fühl” alpacas are at home in the middle of the Röthis wine-growing region. The tours start from here on beautiful hiking trails with views of the vineyards and the Vorderland. There is a colourful programme around the alpacas with a photo safari, alpaca hiking tour or children’s birthday party.

The Third Man tour

The Vienna sewers offer an unexpected chance to relive a piece of cinematic history. The Third Man Tour lets you follow in the actual underground footsteps of Harry Lime.

Chasing Harry Lime

(Guess who ran down these steps?)

The movies have given us a fair few iconic sequences. And one of them plays out in the sewers of post-WWII Vienna: Harry Lime’s desperate attempt to avoid his pursuers near the end of The Third Man .

The screen fills with tunnels and tension, distant echoes, dark shadows, and rushing water.

Amazingly, they produced this extended scene using clever editing and just two rather atmospheric locations down in the local sewer system.

Over 70 years later, and you can visit both places on the Third Man tour offered by Vienna’s own Wien Kanal sewer authorities, who manage just under 2,500km of city sewers.

The tour begins at the very same entrance Harry Lime dropped into. At the bottom, the sewer team guide explains some of the work of today’s sewer management.

Very short walks down more steps and along tunnels then take you to the two actual film locations:

First, the overflow chamber , where a film projected onto the wall reveals various TV and film productions shot in that very place

You move around the same walkways the actors used, and the location feels unchanged since Harry Lime teetered along the edges of the overflow. Close your eyes and you can almost hear the calls of the police.

Second, the Wienfluss (River Wien) where it runs underground, home to the wide, open tunnel scenes

This is history made real.

Quite apart from the Third Man connection, you find yourself in a giant broad underground channel and cavern with tall ceilings, the river walled over some 1km in each direction. And all built well over 100 years ago. Little thuds and echoes add a certain frisson to the experience.

The tour lasts around 45 minutes and is really quite fun. The sewer team throw out a host of anecdotes laced with plenty of Viennese humour.

Contrary to expectations, the smell is not that bad, either. Not particularly fragrant at times, but the sewers involve plenty of natural water so it’s little worse than a somewhat stale basement. And the Wienfluss channel, for example, is a waterway, so perfectly clean.

You don’t do too much walking: just steps up and down and along short, flat walkway areas and tunnels. These can be a touch damp with one or two darker areas (you wear a hard hat with a lamp, but I didn’t need the latter).

Check the safety precautions and house rules, of course, before taking the tour.

Tickets and tips

You buy your ticket at the kiosk near the tour entrance (€10 for an adult at the time of writing and well worth it).

However, you should reserve a place in advance: tour slots fill up, and you may well be disappointed if you try to get in on the day. The official website has an online tool which gets you a reservation number and email you can show at the kiosk.

In 2024, tours took place from May 2nd to October 31st, Thursdays to Sundays, with an English-language tour at 3pm.

Vienna provided almost all the settings for The Third Man, of course. I have an extensive location guide (with photos) should you wish to see more than the sewers. And we have the lovely Third Man museum , too, with its myriads of memorabilia.

How to get there

The tour start and ticket counter are at the northwest corner of the small Girardi park that adjoins Karlsplatz. Look for the large red “3. Mann Tour” lettering opposite Café Museum (one of Vienna’s traditional coffee houses).

By coincidence, the park is named after an actor: Alexander Girardi (1850-1918), who performed both on film and stage. His statue lies close to the tour start.

Karlsplatz is easy to reach on the edge of the old town and a quick walk from the State Opera House , for example.
