Excursion Overview

Buckle up and hold on tight, on this off-road, open-air utv ride.

Explore the mountainous trails of the George Inlet Fjords and the hidden beauty of the Tongass National Forest en route to Mahoney Lake. The path has several stops along the way to soak up the magnificent scenery and wildlife viewing. Have those cameras ready to capture as many photos as possible, and take turns driving the terrain. Mahoney Lake and Mahoney Falls are located at the end of the trail, where a delicious picnic lunch awaits. The remote setting is perfect for adventure-seekers and those wishing to go off the beaten path. Private transportation will depart the cruise ship dock and take a scenic route to the White River base camp. Your driver/guide will share entertaining stories of Ketchikan including the history of the Ward Cove Pulp Mill, the various industries of the past, modern-day highlights of the community, and more. At the White River base camp, meet the UTV Leader who will go over driving instructions and assist in gearing up for the adventure. The trail is over 5 miles in distance each way, so get comfortable with seatbelts on, cameras ready, and prepare to get muddy! Follow the UTV Leader in single-file formation up and down the mountainside where your warm lunch awaits at basecamp. Smokin' reindeer link served on a warm bun and a cup of simmering chili, what's more, outdoor living than that? Leave room for a cup of hot chocolate or coffee, tea or water!

guest reviews

The crew was super friendly and informative. We got good directions and were still able to drive fast and have fun on the karts. We got a good amount of drive time for the price. Thanks Court and Rhianna!

I flew to Ketchikan with a group of 9, 5 adults and 4 kids. We were visiting relatives and they set this up at Adventure Karts. I was pretty excited because the weather was predicted as sunny and warm. When we got to the site we hung out for a bit and then were given an orientation speech by 1 of the 2 guides. Afterwards we suited up in rain gear bibs (even though it wasn't raining I'd recommend wearing) and helmets. Next the second guide gave instructions on how to operate the karts. I was pumped to get started. Make sure if you plan to drive you bring your drivers license. First off the karts don't go super fast but I had expected that. you have one lead guide and the second guide trails the group. I was in a 2-seater and my brother had a 4-seater, with the kids. I had also brought along a GoPro and was able to mount it on the front of the kart, just make sure you bring the right mount. The ride up was pretty cool but there were times when we had to go slow. Since it was a sunny day, it was dry and a bit dusty. If it is rainy or if it recently rained iy may not get as dusty. These are old dirt logging roads so it has multiple potholes and puddles. Additionally you won't have scenic views the entire time. I think the fun part was ripping through those old roads and really getting an off road feel. The first stop we came to this beautiful spot that had a stunning vista. The guide stopped and we got out to take pics and hear them talk about the area. We took tons of pictures. Eventually we headed off to the next stop and walked about 2 minutes to view some waterfalls. Again we were able to take pictures and chat with the rest of the group. They did have a snack of granola bars and water, so don't expect having hotdogs and sodas. The guide then brought us back down to the main area. It was a fun trip and the kids absolutely had a blast. They've never ridden a 4 wheeler or ATV before so this was a new experience for them. Overall the guides were great and the 2 stopping points had really nice views. Since the karts get stretched out just remember to use the suggested hand signals to communicate with each other when driving. I wanted to do something different, get some great pics with great views, see something that is unique to Alaska/Pacific NW(logging roads) & make sure the kids come away feeling like they did something awesome and cool. Adventure Karts exceeded the expectations I had.

You'll want to hit all potholes on these 4x4's with their heavy duty suspension. Although we did not go through any waters (slight drought happening) we did have a wonderful ride. Stops for photo opportunities and sampling the wild berries was an added experience. You won't regret the memories you made on this trip.

Fun & Exciting Alaskan Tours in Ketchikan!

The adventure karts tour.

Super Fun! We were looking for one of those Alaskan tours that would leave an impression! You know, something different - adventurous, exciting, and Fun! Well we found it when we took The Adventure Karts Alaska cruise excursions tour in Ketchikan, Alaska.

Visitor Reviews

Check out visitor reviews of the Adventure Karts Tour in Ketchikan here.

Just one of the adventurous things to do in Ketchikan!

I know, it's difficult to look over the Alaska cruise excursions list and decide, especially in such a fun port as Ketchikan, which Alaska cruise tours to take! We have a lot of family & friends who visit and are always asked which of the Alaskan tours they should take, especially the family friendly attractions! We decided to check out The Adventure Karts to decide whether it was one of the family friendly attractions we could take our in-laws on when they visit. It was perfect!

The bus that took us out to the Adventure Karts tour in Ketchikan

We began at the Cruise Ship dock where we met a dock representative from Adventure Karts who pointed us in the direction of the shuttle bus that we were to take. We drove through town & out North past the Ferry Terminal, Ward Cove, and Totem Bight State Park before pulling onto a dirt road alongside a creek. Our bus driver talked about the sights during the drive and gave us lots of fun facts about Ketchikan.

Once we arrived and unloaded, we were brought into the gear shack and given our safety instructions, details of what to expect, and got geared up!

Getting geared up for our Adventure Kart tour in Ketchikan Alaska

Our wonderful guides explained that the tour is great, rain or shine , as the weather changes the experience. On a rainy day there are mud puddles to splash through & dry days are dusty! Helmets are provided for everyone and Rain Gear is provided on rainy days, and dust masks are provided on dry days. One of the guides made the comment 'The wetter the better!'

The day we went was a rare, dry day and even more surprising, it had not rained for a couple days prior! So we got geared up in a helmet & dust mask and boarded our vehicle.

The vehicle is called a TOMCAR and is an all-terrain-vehicle that was originally built as a fast, tough, off road military vehicle. TOMCAR is fast, maneuverable and drives like no other off-road vehicle used on Alaskan tours!

Adventure Kart Tour in Ketchikan is a favorite Alaskan tours

There are two seats to each kart and my husband jumped in the driver's seat first and we buckled ourselves in tight (it's recommended because all the shaking you do can loosen up the belts!). Let's GO!

Follow the leader on Adventure Kart Tour, Family Friendly Attractions

Our guides positioned themselves one in the lead car & one at the end of the line of cars and off we went, following the leader.

It wasn't but a moment until I was laughing and holding on tight! We zoomed along, down & around old logging roads, with the gorgeous rainforest surrounding us.

There was no time to pull over and take photos, it's not that kind of tour. It's one of the fast paced, hold on, & have fun kind of Alaska Tours!

We made a couple stops during the tour. Our first stop was a gorgeous panoramic view of Clover Pass.

A view of Clover Pass in Ketchikan from the Adventure Kart Tour

We got out, stretched our legs, and simply took in the magnificent view! Oh...and took goofy photos...

Our guide told us all about Ketchikan, the island, the pass we were looking at, & answered any questions we had. She was incredibly knowledgeable and informative!

We got back into our karts and zoomed to the next stop, with some quick stops along the way for more panoramic views!

It's almost indescribable how much fun it is keeping up with the pack, avoiding (or hitting!) the potholes, and smiling the whole way!

A short hike on the Adventure Kart tour in Ketchikan

At our next stop, we got out of the vehicle and walked a short distance to a gorgeous waterfall.

Waterfall seen during the Adventure Kart tour in Ketchikan

We even hiked around & found some scrumptious salmonberries, blueberries, & huckleberries to eat!

Berry picking during our Adventure Kart tour, a family friendly attractions

We were given a snack of a granola bar & bottle of water, which was perfect - a small treat, and we jumped in our karts, switching drivers for the drive back.

While the Adventure Kart tour is not touted as a wildlife tour , we did spot a couple eagles in the trees and the guides told us stories of spotting bears during their stops.

We ended our Adventure Kart Alaskan tours back where we started. We were dirty & dusty and smiling ear to ear. We all laughed & joked with each other about our shared experience while using a wet-wipe to get the dust off of our faces.

Our favorite Alaskan Tours, the Adventure Kart Tour in Ketchikan Alaska

We enjoyed another bottle of water and waited for our bus to take us back to the Cruise Ship docks. It was decided - this was definitely going on my list of favorite Alaskan tours! What a spectacular, fun day, one I will not soon forget!
