San Diego's cruise terminal, situated near downtown, combines stunning waterfront views with easy access to the city's attractions. Discover the vibrant Gaslamp Quarter, explore Balboa Park, and soak up the sun on the beautiful beaches before embarking on your cruise.

The Port of San Diego (also known locally as the Port of Land and See) has two cruise terminals in downtown San Diego, along the Embarcadero waterfront district.

Most cruise ships dock at B-Street Pier & Cruise Ship Terminal is located at 1140 North Harbor Drive.

The 2nd Terminal, Port Pavilion at Broadway Pier, which acts as an overflow terminal is located at 1000 North Harbor Drive.

Both cruise terminals are close to hotels , restaurants and shopping along the two mile stretch known as San Diego Bay’s Embarcadero.

The newer, architecturally stunning, Port Pavillion acts as a flexible event space and has public access to the waterfront, a visitor’s center, and restaurant.  The airport is located 10 minutes away from the cruise piers, and the main train station, only 2 blocks. There is also a waterfront shuttle which operates during the summer, providing rides all day for one low price.

San Diego is known for it’s temperate climate and distinct landscape. There are many vibrant neighborhoods such as Old Town and Pointe Loma, located within a few miles of the ship. Little Italy and the Gaslamp district are located within walking distance of the pier.

Weather in San Diego

March to May and September to November are the best times to visit San Diego. It can get rainy during the winter, but the lower rates on hotel accommodations make it a great time to visit. In any case, the weather is almost always sunny throughout the year, which makes almost any time a good time to come to San Diego.

The San Diego Cruise Ship Terminal is located at 1140 North Harbor Drive on the B Street Pier. It is conveniently located in downtown San Diego a short walking distance from countless attractions.

For those arriving to San Diego by air, the terminal is a 10-minute ride from San Diego International Airport. An area devoted for taxicab pick-up is located just outside of the baggage claim areas of the airport's two main terminals and commuter terminal.

A new service for passengers of select cruise lines allows them to skip baggage claim at the airport. Cruise line representatives will pick up guests' checked items and deliver them directly to the ship. Please check with your cruise line or travel agent to arrange for this service.

The ferry departs the Broadway Pier (next to the cruise terminal) daily for Coronado, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and crossings continue every hour on the hour until 9:00 p.m. Departures from Coronado begin at 9:30 a.m. and continue every hour on the half hour until 9:30 p.m.

Shopping and Food

You can find boutiques and restaurants in Seaport Village south of the cruise terminal walking along the harbor and in the historic Gaslamp Quarter.

The official U.S. currency is the United States dollar (symbol: $). ATM's everywhere.

Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely used and accepted, even for transactions worth only a few dollars. In fact, in some cases, it may be the only way to make a transaction. Note to overseas visitors: Prices of goods and services always seem lower than they really are, as taxes and gratuities are seldom included.

Most states have a sales tax, ranging from 2.9% to nearly 10% of the retail price; 4-6% is typical. Sales tax is almost never included in posted prices (except for gasoline, and in most states, alcoholic beverages consumed on-premises), but instead will be calculated and added to the total when you pay.

Tipping in America is widely used and expected. While Americans themselves often debate correct levels and exactly who deserves to be tipped, generally accepted standard rates are:

• Full-service restaurants: 15-20% (Often this is the only income of the wait(ress). Tips are either left in cash or you can add it to the credit card slip) Note: Few restaurants add an automatic service charge, in which case it is up to you how much you tip extra. Check your bill!
• Taxi drivers, hairdressers, other personal services: 10-15%
• Bartenders: $1 per drink if inexpensive or 15% of total
• Bellhops: $1-2 per bag ($3-5 minimum regardless)
• Hotel doorman: $1 per bag (if they assist), $1 for calling a cab
• Tour guides: Depending on tour length, size, and overall quality of guided tours; for half day tours or less $5-10 per person, for longer tours $10-20 per person.
• Private car & limousine drivers: 15-20%
• Housekeeping in hotels: $1-2 per day for long stays or $5 minimum for very short stays (optional)
• Food delivery (pizza, etc.): $2-5, possibly more for very large orders

In major metropolitan areas like New York and Los Angeles, many drugstores and supermarkets are routinely open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, while department stores, shopping centers and most other large retailers are typically open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and often with shorter hours on Sundays - generally 11 a.m. or noon to 5 or 6 p.m. On holidays, the tendency is to remain open (with the exception of the most important holidays like Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day where stores are generally closed)

How far is the San Diego Airport from the San Diego cruise terminal?

The San Diego Airport is about three miles from the San Diego cruise terminal, and the trip takes about 10 minutes.

After your cruise, you can book a shore excursion that includes a tour of the city, followed by an airport drop-off.

A good option for families or groups who are flying to San Diego to embark on a cruise is to take a rideshare from the airport to the port area since you’ll be charged for the cost of the car and not a fee per person. You can also take a taxi, the most expensive option, but still reasonable given the short distance.

There are also shuttle services with affordable rates.

If you are spending one day in San Diego and staying at a hotel before your cruise, check to see if the hotel offers a shuttle service that will pick you up at the airport, then drop you off at the cruise port the next day.

Where should I park for a cruise from San Diego?

If you’re driving to the San Diego cruise port, it’s worth noting that there is no parking at the cruise terminal. However, there are multiple options for long-term parking at several lots nearby, ranging from one mile to three miles away from the port. These parking terminals are offered at generally competitive rates, based on their proximity to the port.

Covered parking is available at the Wyndham San Diego Bayside across the street from the cruise port.

Royal Caribbean Directions to San Diego, California Cruise Terminal:

From San Diego International Airport (3 miles):

• Exit the airport, onto Harbor Boulevard South.
• Follow Harbor Boulevard South towards the downtown area.
• B Street Pier will be on your right.

Southbound on I-5:

• Take the Front Street Exit.
• Stay in the right lane for 2 lights.
• Turn right at Ash Street and follow until it dead ends at Harbor Drive.
• Turn left at Harbor Drive, the B Street Pier is on your right.

Northbound on I-5:

• Take the 6th Street Exit.
• Turn left onto 6th Street.
• Go approximately 4 blocks.

Secured parking is available at the Wyndham San Diego Bayside across the street from the San Diego cruise ship terminal. A complimentary shuttle is offered to the cruise ship terminals. Reservations are recommended.

San Deigo has two cruise ship terminals located close to one another along the Embarcedero. You will find plenty of dining and shopping options while waiting to check in for your cruise.

Upon arriving at San Diego International Airport, getting to downtown San Diego is very straightforward.

The airport is located just a few kilometers from the city center, ensuring a smooth transition from your flight to your downtown destination. The journey time is around 10 to 15 minutes.

• From the arrivals lounge, follow the signs for the transportation plaza. There are plenty of official taxis outside the airport.
• Your hotel may be able to offer a shuttle bus pickup, usually for a fee. Check with them when you make your booking. Shuttle services depart from the Transportation Plazas across from Terminals 1 and 2. If you arrive at  Terminal 1 , cross the Skybridge and take the escalators or the elevators to street level. From  Terminal 2 , use the pedestrian crosswalk outside the Baggage Claim Area to access the Transportation Plaza.
• The San Diego Flyer is a free shuttle bus between the airport and the Old Town Transit Center. However, we think this is located too far from Downtown to be convenient for visitors.

Port San Diego cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from San Diego, California. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port San Diego is located in Southern California and on San Diego Bay. The port city was founded in 1542 by Spanish conquistadors. San Diego is approx 120 mi (190 km / 2-hours drive) from Los Angeles (direction south) and approx 350 mi (560 km / 5-hours drive) from Las Vegas.

As cruise port, San Diego CA is a major departure port / homeport for turnaround operations (roundtrip itineraries). The Port's cruise ship schedule offers convenient departures to ports in Hawaii, Mexico's Riviera and California coastal cities. The most popular itinerary from San Diego is the 7-day "Mexican Riviera Cruise" visiting Mazatlan , Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas . Longer voyages go to South America or the South Pacific (Australia-New Zealand).

San Diego Bay (where the cruise port is located) features a coastline with numerous luxury hotels. The Port alone is the landlord for 17 hotels at the waterfront. Here are still operational 3x shipyards - NASSCO (National Steel and Shipbuilding Company), Huntington Ingalls (Continental Maritime) and BAE Systems (Southwest Marine). NASSCO is West Coast USA's largest shipbuilding yard. It specializes in building auxiliary and support vessels (for the US Navy), as well as oil tankers and dry-bulk cargo carriers.

Currently, by annual cruise berthings, San Diego is ranked California's 3rd-busiest cruise port - after Long Beach and Los Angeles .

Port San Diego CA

Port San Diego (locode USSAN) was established in 1962 as a public-benefit corporation. As cargo port, it is currently ranked one of USA's top 30 containership ports, with annual cargo shipping volume of ~3 million tons. For FY2017 (fiscal year), the Port reported USD 9,4 billion impact to California's economy. Its business supports 44300+ local jobs (shipbuilding, cargo operations, tourism, hospitality).

The Port's largest/main terminals are 10th Avenue Marine Terminal and National City Marine Terminal.

• 10th Avenue Marine Terminal covers an area of 96 acres (39 ha) and has 8x multi-purpose berths. The imported cargoes include refrigerated food, fertilizer, cement, break bulk cargoes, forest products. There is a large, on-dock cold storage warehouse (sized 300,000 ft2 / 28,000 m2) used for storing perishables (including fresh produce).
• National City Marine Terminal (operated by The Pasha Group) covers an area of 125 acres (51 ha) and has 7x berths. Annually, here are handled 450,000+ vehicles. The terminal serves as primary port for imported cars (Honda, Acura, Isuzu, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Hino Motors, VW).

San Diego is the primary port for imported vehicles (Fiat, Audi, VW, Honda, Mazda, Acura, Isuzu, Nissan, Mitsubishi). The seaport holds a lease with Dole Food Company (importing much of the USA's bananas).

San Diego Bay waterfront's most visited tourist attraction is the Maritime Museum. The 1948-opened museum has one of the USA's largest collections of historic ships, featuring the Star of India (1863-built iron-hulled sailing ship), San Salvador (100-ft/30-m long full-rigged galleon, replica of the flagship of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo/1497-1543), HMS Surprise (3-masted sailship, 1970-built as replica of HMS Rose/1757-launched 20-gun/6th-rate post ship of the British Royal Navy) and Berkeley (1898-built ferryboat that served San Francisco Bay crossings between West Oakland and San Francisco ). On Berkeley is also the MacMullen Library & Research Archives.

In April 2023, San Diego's Maritime Museum announced a plan to redevelop the North Embarcadero premises to include galleries, a store, an educational theater, a cafe bar, roof-top terraces, as well as public and administrative offices. The US$28 million project also includes reconfiguration of the dock/moorings.

San Diego cruise port is located downtown (North Embarcadero). Its main passenger terminal facility (B Street Pier) has 3 berths. The historic Broadway Pier was redeveloped (inaugurated in December 2010) as the second cruise terminal. The list of largest cruise shipping companies homeporting vessels here includes HAL-Holland America Line , Celebrity , DCL-Disney , RCI-Royal Caribbean , NCL-Norwegian , Carnival , Princess , Silversea . Each San Diego roundtrip voyage results in an average USD 2 million in economic impact to California.

Most cruises leaving from San Diego are to Mexico. In early April and early November are also offered Panama Canal repositioning cruises. The port is often included in around-the-world voyages offered by companies like Costa , Oceania , Phoenix Reisen .

In the period 2002-2006, the cruise port reported a 44% growth in ship calls - from 122 (in 2002) to 219 (in 2006). In that period, the passenger numbers jumped from 276,000 to 619,000. In 2008, the port reported a record year with handled 252 cruise ship calls and over 800,000 passengers. In 2007, this business declined due to slumping US economy and the violence in Mexico.

In May 2013, the port was visited by its largest so far cruise ship - Celebrity Solstice . In 2016, the cruise port reported a 50% increase in ship calls. The growth was largely based on turnaround operations by Holland America and Disney ships.

Port San Diego reported a total of 69 ship calls during season 2015-2016 and scheduled 83 calls in 2017-2018. The increase in passengers was from 198,000 (season 2015-2016) to over 242,000 (2017-2018). The increased passenger shipping traffic was mainly due to Mexican Riviera itineraries. Previous cruise port statistics show 200 ship calls (season 2009-2010) and a drop to 79 calls (2012-2013).

In 2017, Disney Wonder had scheduled 13 San Diego departures. Princess ships visit the port on round-trip Mexican Riviera itineraries leaving out of Los Angeles . HAL-Holland America Line also cruises to Mexico Riviera ports, as well as Panama Canal transition and Mexico-Hawaii cruises leaving out of San Diego and visiting Ensenada (Baja California) . For season 2019-2020, HAL homeported here a small fleet of 3 liners ( Oosterdam , Eurodam , Maasdam ) for 7-day Mexican Riviera itineraries visiting Puerto Vallarta , Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlan .

For season 2018-2019, the port handled 92 ship calls (83 calls in 2017) and ~242,000 passengers (8% increase over 2017). The projected growth in cruise passenger numbers is 5-8% a year - to 280,000 by 2020. In 2019, Walt Disney expanded its San Diego homeporting season to 2 months. Also in 2019, the seaport celebrates its 250th anniversary.

For season 2019-2020, the cruise port had scheduled (berth bookings) 104 ship calls with expected ~338,000 passengers (295,000 more than 2018-19). Season's highlight is the return of Carnival Cruise Lines (last homeporting here in 2011) with Carnival Miracle (beginning December 1, 2019) for 12 roundtrips. Carnival's planned itineraries included 7-day Mexican Riviera; 14-15-day Hawaiian Islands, 3-4-5-6-day Baja Mexico.

In 2020, the Port opened a second shore-to-ship power connection . Using power supply from the city's power grid, shore power reduces bad emissions from vessels while berthed in port.

• After 2020, cruise companies with more than 5 ship calls in California are required to plug-in (use shoreside power supply) for 80% of the calls. The mark before 2020 was 70%.
• In April 2021 was announced a USD 4,6 million investment (equipment, installation, construction) to double the shore-power capability at the terminals "B Street Pier" and "Broadway Pier". In January 2022, for the project (completed in August 2022) were contracted Cochrane Marine LLC (to buy equipment, also for construction management, testing, coordinating, commissioning) and Baker Electric Inc (to install the new electrical equipment and to replace/terminate the medium voltage cables).
• Now, at both terminals, two vessels can be plugged in simultaneously. The first two ships that simultaneously used the expanded shore-power facility (on January 13, 2023) were Disney Wonder and Oceania Insignia .
• In December 2023 was planned a third shore power plug/point (at B Street Terminal's south berth) to be operational in 2024.

CCL-Carnival stopped homeporting here in 2012. Carnival Elation was the first homeported year-round in San Diego (between 2007-2010), followed by Carnival Spirit (2011-2012, then relocated to Australia). Starting December 1, 2019, here was homeported Carnival Miracle (previously deployed in Tampa FL ) for a 3-month season to Hawaii (14-15-day) and Mexico (5-7-day).

In late-July 2020, Port San Diego was approved by CBP (US Customs and Border Protection) to activate an FTZ (Foreign Trade Zone) at TAMT (10th Avenue Marine Terminal / 96-acres / 39-hectares site). The FTZ offers as business benefits duty reduction (in merchandise processing fees), deferral (flow savings until cargoes are imported/exported), logistical, cost savings. At the FTZ, equipment manufacturers can assemble components to create USA-made products, thus obtaining additional savings (duty drawbacks). As of 2020, San Diego County has 19x FTZx (mainly warehouses). The seaport has two cargo terminals - TAMT and NCMT (National City Marine Terminal) - both benefiting from the deep-water and well-protected harbor.

Due to the global Coronavirus crisis, in 2020 Port San Diego lost 49 cruise ship calls (~174,000 tourists) or ~40% of 2020-2021 (September-May) season's planned 137 calls (expected ~450,000 tourists). The canceled 49 calls (12x by Disney and 17x by Holland America) resulted in ~USD 79M loss of revenues.

On September 29, 2020, Port San Diego completed the USD 24 million project for the modernization of 10th Avenue Marine Terminal. Partially, the TIGER project ("Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery" ) was funded by US Department of Transportation (USD 10 M). Works included removing two obsolete warehouses (redeveloping their area with project cargo handling facilities), improving dock rails, and installing new lighting and pavement. Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal serves mainly RoRo vessels (vehicle carriers) , break-bulk cargo carriers (military equipment, wind energy equipment, shipbuilding steel), boxships (reefers/refrigerated TEU-containers with fresh import produce), dry-bulk cargo carriers (soda ash, aggregate, cement / used in construction projects).

Season 2022-2023 became the cruise port's busiest (since 2009-2010) with 140 booked berthings (+45% over 2021-22) and estimated ~460,000 tourists. In season 2022-23, Disney doubled its homeporting operations (from 16-24 to 51), while Princess booked 13 berthings and for the first time started homeporting in/roundtrips from San Diego.

Season 2023-2024 comprised 100 ship calls and ~338,000 passengers.

San Diego cruise terminal

San Diego cruise terminals are very close to downtown, both located at B Street Pier (at 1140 Harbor Drive). The Airport is just 5 mi (8 km) from the cruise port.

The “first green building” or the Port Pavilion at Broadway Pier also has a terminal.

It is used if more than 4 vessels are in port or if the "B Street" Terminal is not operational (generally due to maintenance works).

Both San Diego cruise port terminals offer a wide range of passenger-use facilities. Parking fees are USD 10–20 daily (Port Authority subject to change). Both facilities offer easy access to downtown attractions like the Maritime Museum, Midway Museum, several waterfront hotels and restaurants. The facilities are also close to San Diego's historic neighborhoods Gaslamp Quarter and Little Italy.

B Street Pier has 5x wharves. Wharf 1 and Wharf 2 are on the north side, Wharf 3 is on the west and Wharf 4 and Wharf 5 are on the south side. Wharves 1, 2, 4 and 5 can accommodate bigger cruise liners . Smaller vessels dock at Wharf 3. In October 2017, at B Street Cruise Terminal was installed a new passenger boarding bridge. Major repairs and improvements were made to B Street Terminal's Pier in 2022. For 2024 was scheduled to start a US$5 million project for interior improvements to B Street Terminal.

USS Midway Museum: it is within 5 minutes walking time from San Diego cruise port, along North Harbor Drive. Discover the naval tradition of San Diego.

San Diego Maritime Museum: amazing historic ships collection. It is north of San Diego cruise port. You will find ships like Berkeley, Star of India and Californian.

Seaport Village: the best place for shopping. It is 2/3 miles away from San Diego cruise port.

Embarcadero Marine Park: located just across Seaport Village.

Balboa Park: 12,000 acres with 15 galleries and museums like San Diego Museum of Art and the San Diego Natural History Museum.. There is also the San Diego zoo, the Japanese Friendship Garden and the Inez Rose Parker Memorial Rose Garden.

Gaslamp Quarter: the most attractive area of San Diego. It dates from 1867. Discover wide range of restaurants, fashion shops,sidewalk cafes,galleries, jazz clubs, nightclubs and bars. The Victorian atmosphere combines with a party atmosphere for an amazing experience.

Spanish Missions: there 21 catholic missions. The first one is Mission San Diego de Alcala, known also as Mother of the Missions.

With two centrally located cruise ship terminals downtown just minutes from the San Diego International Airport, as well as chic bayside hotels, restaurants and exciting attractions, San Diego is the perfect cruise port, serving a wide range of cruise lines with diverse itineraries.

Ten cruise lines make calls in San Diego including Disney – the newest addition – Carnival, Celebrity, Crystal, Holland America, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Silversea. Each year, about 75 cruise ships dock in San Diego Bay, one of the most beautiful natural harbors on the West Coast.

San Diego is a lovely and one of the biggest cities of California USA. With roots dating back to the 18th century, its California’s first city. This laid back city boasts a mild climate, great beaches, fascinating shops and art galleries.

A large number of reasonable priced hotels and inexpensive motels are located within close distance of both terminals, B Street and Broadway Pier, in downtown San Diego. Many of them offer a shuttle service to the terminal.

Where to Stay ?

Ships tie up at the International B Street Cruise Ship Terminal or the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier , right in the heart of downtown San Diego.

You’ll find a wide variety of San Diego hotels to choose from, including luxury resorts and cheap motels. Stay right in downtown close to the cruise terminal, in a hotel near the airport or in a fine beachfront resort. Many properties are within walking distance , or offer a free shuttle.

Many downtown hotels are only a short cab or Uber ride away from the port. The Bay Front where the USS Midway, Maritime Museum, and Seaport Village are is within easy reach. Popular neighborhouds are the vibrant Gaslamp Quarter and Little Italy.

Most hotels in the Downtown area do not offer a shuttle service to the cruise terminal since the port is located so close. Several hotels are located within easy walking distance such as the SpringHill Suites Downtown/Bayfront and InterContinental San Diego ( no shuttle needed ).

Places to Stay

One of the closest hotels is Wyndham San Diego Bayside, located directly across the cruise facility. If you get a bay view room, you can watch your ship arrive in the early morning. On Pacific Highway, which is one block behind the cruise terminal, there are both reasonably priced Hampton Inn and Embassy Suites.

Many more properties are located a few blocks from the pier. Looking for a place to stay near the beach ? Check deals for Coronado, Pacific or Mission Beach and La Jolla . Coronado Island is home to famous Hotel del Coronado, located on California’s Pacific coastline. You can get to downtown San Diego by water taxi.

When having a car , you can consider a stay in Mission Valley . Properties in this area are less expensive. Many cheap places to stay are also located close to San Diego international airport . A lot of accommodations provide a free shuttle service transport to/from SAN international airport. Properties in this area are very budget friendly. Many offer also free car parking, free Wi-Fi and a swimming pool. Gaslamp Quarter and the San Diego Zoo are within 10-15 minutes’ drive.

Cruises from Port of San Diego ca

San Diego CA is an important trade port between the US and Asia, and a major naval military port.

The Port of San Diego serves also as a departure point for cruises along the West Coast to Baja California, the Mexican Riviera and roundtrips to Honolulu Hawaii . Some ships travel to cosmopolitan Vancouver in Canada . During these journeys you can enjoy stops in San Francisco or Seattle wa . Some longer cruises transit the Panama Canal and sail all the way to Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Florida .

Santa Fe Train Station — The rail station is a short distance from the cruise terminal, so you may walk or take a taxi service to the terminal. Port for Cruise Ships — currently sailing from the San Diego port are ocean liners from Holland America Line (ms Statendam and Veendam), Royal Caribbean RCL , Celebrity Cruises , and Crystal Cruises . Other lines that visit San Diego include Princess, Carnival, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas, Hapag-Lloyd Line, and The World of ResidenSea.

Pre and Post Cruise Overnight Accommodation with free Shuttle

Many San Diego hotels offer complimentary parking as well as a free roundtrip shuttle transportation to the cruise port and airport.

Gaslamp Quarter – Coronado Island

In San Diego’s port visit the USS Midway, a retired naval aircraft carrier that has been converted into a museum. You are able to explore this huge vessel and numerous decks including the flight deck.

A must do if you love nautical history is The Maritime Museum of San Diego, home to the Star of India, the oldest sailing ship still operating. Head to San Diego’s beautiful harbor for a nice stroll or visit Seaport Village along the Embarcadero with its cute little and coll shops.

The historic heart of old San Diego is the Gaslamp Quarter. Here you can find many old colonial buildings, great shops and the finest restaurants. It’s a very lively and busy area at all times.

On nearby Coronado Island, across San Diego Bay from downtown, you have the opportunity to explore the historic Victorian mansions or spend a lazy day relaxing on a white sandy beach. The most recognisable landmark is the Hotel del Coronado. This wooden beach resort is now a National Historical Landmark. Take a tour to learn all about the ghosts who reside there.

Another lovely day out for the entire family is fantastic SeaWorld, home to killer whales, seals, dolphins and other marine wildlife. Head to La Jolla Cove to see these beautiful animals in their natural habit. The views and sea life are amazing.

A great relaxing way to end of your day is taking an evening cruise. Watch a gorgeous sunset, see the skyline, boats in the harbor, the sea lions and sights of the bay. Coronado Island — the island can be reached by car by driving over the bridge (free), driving south on the 5 Freeway and turning right on Palm Avenue or by taking the ferry. The drive takes you up the Silver Strand, a highway with the bay on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Coronado offers some of the best beaches in the USA, with wide stretches of soft white sand and a safe, friendly ambiance.

San Diego Zoo — The San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park is one of the world’s largest and best zoos.

Nearest airports – SAN International

San Diego Intercontinental Airport (SAN) — SAN airport is approximately ten minutes or 3 miles northwest from the B Street and Broadway Pier terminals.

Several budget friendly hotels offer a free complimentary shuttle service to/from the airport.

Parking — safe and secure short and long term car parkings are located just across the street or a short distance away from the port.

A complimentary shuttle service will bring cruise passengers to the embarkation terminal.

Getting to the San Diego Cruise Port Without a Car

Maybe you’re flying into San Diego from points elsewhere for your cruise. Or perhaps you already live in the area but want to save money on cruise parking so that you can put that cash toward your trip.

No matter the reason, we are strong believers that finding a way to the port — other than driving and parking — is a smart idea. Not only do you no longer have to paying for parking, but you also get to avoid the hassle and traffic of driving to the port on cruise day. It makes for a much more pleasant experience as you start your trip.

San Diego offers a number of ways to get to the cruise port from the airport, or any other place in the area.

Uber & Lyft

When it comes to the combination of convenience and cost, it’s tough to beat Uber & Lyft. With just a few clicks on a smartphone app, you can call up a ride that usually much cheaper than a traditional taxi. The rideshare companies are everywhere in the southern California area, meaning that you can get a ride just about anywhere you are. That’s why it’s our recommended way to get to the San Diego cruise terminal.

Drop Off/Pick Up at San Diego International Airport You can be picked up and dropped off at the airport using these services. Note that there will be a small extra charge ($2.76) for pickups at the airport. Even so, rideshare services still offer a cheap way to the port or your hotel.

To give you an idea of what the fare would cost, here are some estimates for Uber & Lyft from various spots in San Diego and Southern California. Keep in mind that these prices are per car, not per person. If traveling with several people, the per person cost is even cheaper.

Rates below include a 15% customary tip for the taxi rate. Uber doesn’t use tipping. Tipping is optional with Lyft.

Want to take a regular yellow cab? If coming from an airport where there are dedicated cab station, it’s not a bad choice as there should be cars waiting for you. If you are anywhere else in the city, expect to wait at least a few minutes for your ride. Be sure to call early to ensure that you make it to the port on time.

We don’t see much advantage in taking a taxi over rideshare options as they typically cost more and likely won’t be as comfortable. Still, many people don’t have apps like Uber & Lyft downloaded nor do they want to deal with using them. In this case, a cab is a viable option to your cruise.

Above, we’ve listed the estimated taxi fare from popular areas to the cruise ports. These prices are by the car (not per person) and include a customary 15% gratuity.

Cruise Shuttles

Depending on which cruise line you take, they will either offer transportation to the port include in your cruise fare (such as Celebrity Cruises) or they will have a transfer that you can purchase separately. For example, Norwegian Cruise Lines offers a shuttle bus from the airport to the cruise port for $15 per person, each way.

If you’re interested in one of the cruise lines transfers, you’ll need to contact your cruise line directly (you can often book through your online account as well).

For a couple of reasons, we usually suggest going with another option than a cruise shuttle transfer. First, it is expensive. The rates are per person. So a family of four is paying $15 each ($60) to get from the airport to the San Diego cruise port, a distance of about a mile. Other options like Uber and taxis price based on the car, not the number of occupants.

Second, cruise transfers are extremely limited. In this case, it runs only from SAN to the cruise port… and only on the day of sailing. So if you come in early, are flying into an airport other than San Diego, or are staying at a hotel in the area, then the cruise line transfer isn’t a viable option.

Independent Shuttles/Car Services

There is no shortage of shuttle or car services that will get you to the port. These make sense when you are traveling with a large group, coming from farther away, or simply want to be transported in style. For most people, however, they are overkill — especially if coming from the airport, which is a short distance from the airport.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the prices you are quoted won’t include gratuity, which can add on another 15-20% to your fare.

Public Transportation

If you are flying into San Diego and want to go to the cruise port or downtown, then public transportation is by far the cheapest way to go.

San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) offers the 992 bus, which runs a convenient route from the airport straight to downtown. Routes run about every 15 minutes during the day. Fares are cheap — just $2.25 per person one way. Seniors over 60 pay $1.10 and kids under 5 are free.

Hotel Shuttles

If you are staying in a nearby hotel before your cruise , ask if they have a shuttle. Many hotels, especially those that offer parking packages, usually have shuttles that can take you to nearby points of interest. Best of all, they are usually free to guests.

Goodness, from the airport if you are in decent physical shape, you could walk it. Yes it would mean a lot of crosswalks and crossing streets and parking lot driveways to get away from the airport, but the distance is only about 1.5 – 2 miles (depending on which side of the terminal buildings you arrive). Of course that wouldn’t be fun dragging luggage.

Need transfer on Jan. 12 @ 12:30 pm to transfer 20 cruisers from 871 N. Broadway Park & Ride in Escondido to drop off at Carnival Cruise Line. THe on returning date Jan. 17 pickup from Carnival and return to 871 N> Broadway Park & Ride

When you cruise from San Diego , or cruise to California in general, you are getting the best of both worlds: a beautiful cruise and everything that California has to offer. When planning your cruise vacation, it is important not only to know where you will be cruising from, but also what is there for you when the boat docks.

What Cruise Lines Sail Out Of San Diego?

While a variety of cruise lines may visit San Diego on a port call, Celebrity Cruise Line , Crystal Cruises , Disney Cruise Line , Holland America Line , Norwegian Cruise Line , and Princess Cruises are the primary cruise lines that sail from San Diego.

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock In San Diego?

San Diego has two cruise ship piers located on the Embarcadero just minutes from the San Diego International Airport and the downtown Gaslamp Quarter entertainment district.

Depending on the date and cruise line, different piers are used for different cruises. Luckily, both the B Street Pier & Cruise Ship Terminal and Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier. B Street Pier is the larger of the two and is where the majority of cruise ships dock, this is especially true of the larger vessels like those from Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Carnival.

What Is The Cheapest Month To Go On A Cruise?

Unlike Caribbean cruises, San Diego is mostly a seasonal cruise port and highly dependent on ships that sail in Alaska during the summer spending time in San Diego during the winter as well as Fall and Spring cruises when the ships transition from summer to winter cruising destinations.

Additionally, because of this, most cruises from San Diego are seven days or longer.

Based on our expert advice though, you can still find a cheap cruise from San Diego. Repositioning cruises offer great value if you are willing to fly home, instead of having the cruise ship return to San Diego.

These cruises aren't your typical experience and have fewer port visits than other options but if you are looking to cruise from San Diego to Vancouver for cheap then this is a great option. Prices for these repositioning cruises will generally be $100 or less per day based on double occupancy, not counting port expenses, taxes, and other fees.

This would ultimately make March and April the cheapest months to take a cruise vacation from San Diego.

Are There Cheap Mexico Cruises From San Diego?

As the west coast cruise market re-builds, most cruises to Mexico from San Diego are longer cruises compared to the cheap three day and four day Mexican Riviera and Baja cruises that you might find out of San Pedro and Long Beach.

As the industry continues to recover, we expect to see more cheap cruises to Mexico like we saw before the pandemic.

Do You Need A Passport For Cruises From San Diego?

Yes ... and no. Customs and Border Control / Immigration officers coming back to the United States may not always require US Citizens to have a passport when traveling to Mexico or Canada. However, your cruise line will almost always require it. If you do not have a passport though, other documentation is generally required which can be complicated and time consuming or even disruptive if something happens where you need to leave the cruise ship for some reason.

Additionally, while a US Passport Card or even the Secure ID Drivers License cards are great for getting back into the United States at land crossings, we strongly recommend bringing your Passport Book to avoid any issues.

Best Hotels To Stay At Close To The San Diego Cruise Port

San Diego is one of the absolute best cities in the United States when it comes to taking a cruise vacation. Not only is the weather almost always awesome and the port facilities are large enough to be efficient ... but not overwhelming, but there are a huge number of hotels at different price points just minutes away from the cruise port.

For instance, if you are looking for a waterfront view so you relax as you overlook San Diego Bay before or after your cruise, places like Wyndham Bayfront, Manchester Hyatt, and Marriott Marquis are great options.

If you want something more urban where you can walk to food, shopping, and nightlife attractions downtown then we recommend Pendry hotel in the heart of the Gaslamp.

On the other hand, if you are looking for something a bit more affordable when selecting a hotel before or after your cruise, Point Loma has a number of boutique hotels such as Dolphin Motel and The Pearl Hotel that are good quality but less expensive.

Is There Good Parking Close To The San Diego Cruise Port?

There are multiple options for long term cruise parking close to the port . This includes many of San Diego's long term airport parking providers who offer cruise ship shuttles on days that ships are in port as well as cruise parking in garages walking distance to the cruise piers.

Two of the best options for cruise parking are in the BRIC North and South Garages as well as the Wyndham as they are located directly across from where the cruise ships dock and are easy walk, even with bags.

How Can I Get From The Airport to San Diego Cruise Port?

Transportation from San Diego International Airport to the cruise port is extremely easy. While public transportation is not readily available (we do not recommend visitors take the bus on their vacation as it will be far slower than a taxi or ride share and more complicated with bags), the ride from your terminal to the port is only 2.3 miles and should take no longer than 15 minutes and cost less than $20.

Norwegian Cruise Line worker accused of stabbing 3 people onboard Alaska-bound vessel

The alleged incident happened west of vancouver island, british columbia, as the ship was sailing to alaska, by associated press • published may 7, 2024 • updated on may 7, 2024 at 7:04 pm.

A cruise ship worker from South Africa was arrested Tuesday in Alaska's capital city, accused of attacking a woman and two security guards with scissors on board the vessel, according to authorities.

The U.S. attorney's office says the man is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction. Online court records do not show an attorney for the 35-year-old man.

According to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy, the man was recently hired by a cruise line and joined the ship, the Norwegian Encore, in Seattle on Sunday. The ship set off that day for a weeklong trip with scheduled stops in Alaska ports, including the capital of Juneau, and British Columbia.

The alleged incident happened west of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, as the ship was sailing to Alaska. According to the affidavit, during the 'late evening" Sunday, ship personnel saw the man trying to deploy a lifeboat, and he was taken by security to a medical center for an evaluation.

While there, he “became irrational and attempted to leave,” and “physically attacked” a guard and a nurse, the affidavit states. He ran into another room, where he grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed a woman who was being examined, as well as two guards who tried to intervene before being subdued and held in a “shipboard jail,” the affidavit says. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

The ship arrived in Juneau on Tuesday, when he was arrested by the FBI, the U.S. attorney's office says.
