BCCI Announces Squad For Indias Tour Of Australia, Rohit Sharma Not Named

  • The BCCI announced the Indian squad for the Australia tour
  • Rohit Sharma has not been named in any of the three squads
  • Varun Chakravarthy has earned a maiden call up to India's T20I squad

The BCCI's Senior National Selection Committee on Monday announced the Indian squads for the Australia tour , comprising fours Tests, three One-day Internationals and as many Twenty20 Internationals. India's limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma , who is currently battling with a hamstring injury, has not been picked in any of the three squads, with BCCI saying that their medical team will continue to monitor his progress. Another notable name missing from the Test squad is veteran fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who was ruled out of the IPL with a rib injury . The BCCI's medical team will also keep track of his progress.

KL Rahul, who is having a dream run in the ongoing IPL 2020 , has replaced Rohit in the longest format. The Kings XI Punjab skipper has also been handed the leadership responsibility for the first time in his international career, with his appointment as Kohli's deputy in both ODIs and T20Is. Royal Challengers Bangalore fast-bowling duo of Navdeep Saini and Mohammed Siraj have been rewarded for their impressive performances with a place in the red-ball squad.

Kolkata Knight Riders' mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who became the first bowler to pick up a five-wicket haul in the IPL 2020 , has earned a maiden call-up to the Indian team, with a place in the shortest format squad. Interestingly, Rishabh Pant is not part of the limiter-overs squad, with Sanju Samson included as a backup keeper in the shortest format, while KL Rahul included as the lone wicket-keeper in ODI side.

Shikhar Dhawan, who missed India's tour of New Zealand earlier this year with an injury, has made a comeback into the side on the back of his superb form in the IPL, which saw him becoming the first player ever to score back-to-back centuries in the cash-rich league.

Chennai Super Kings fast bowler Deepak Chahar has also made a comeback to the T20I side.

The BCCI also announced that four additional fast bowlers -- Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Kartik Tyagi, Ishan Porel and T. Natarajan -- will be travelling with the Indian contingent.

Test squad: Virat Kohli (capt), Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-capt), Hanuma Vihari, Shubman Gill, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Siraj.

ODI squad: Virat Kohli (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul (vice-capt/wk), Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya, Mayank Agarwal, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Navdeep Saini, Shardul Thakur

T20I squad: Virat Kohli (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul (vice-capt/wk), Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya, Sanju Samson (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Navdeep Saini, Deepak Chahar, Varun Chakravarthy.

Hockey: Harmanpreet Singh to lead 27-member Indian squad for Australia tour

Hockey India on Monday named a 27-member Indian men's team for the upcoming tour of Australia, which starts on April 6 in Perth.

The Indian team will be led by ace drag-flicker and defender Harmanpreet Singh, with Hardik Singh as the vice-captain.

The five-match tour will be a litmus test for the team in their preparations for the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

The team also includes PR Sreejesh, Krishan Pathak, Suraj Karkera, Araijeet Singh Hundal, Mandeep Singh, Dilpreet Singh, Gurjant Singh, Akashdeep Singh, Jugraj Singh, Vishnukant Singh, Raj Kumar Pal, Lalit Upadhyay, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Boby Singh Dhami, Nilakanta Sharma, Sumit, Sanjay, Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, Shamsher Singh, Manpreet Singh, Amir Ali, Mohammed Raheel Mouseen, Jarmanpreet Singh and Amit Rohidas.

Chief coach Craig Fulton has opted to go with the almost entire core group in order to give players a chance to showcase their potential before the final 16-member team is selected for the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

“This will be a very important tour for us as it will not only ascertain the level we are at and the areas we want to get better ahead of the Paris Olympics, but this is also an important tournament for the players,” Fulton said.

“We chose to go with the almost entire core group so that each player gets enough opportunity to showcase their full potential and also it is a good tour to test different combinations.”

Australia had won silver at the Tokyo Olympics, where India won bronze.

The Indian team will play their first game on April 6, followed by the second match on April 7.

After a short break, the remaining matches will be played on April 10, 12 and 13.

Spinner Todd Murphy named as bolter in Australian squad for tour of India

Australia has named a bolter in its Test squad for the tour of India in a sign he could be weeks away from getting a baggy green.

Uncapped spinner Todd Murphy has bolted into Australia’s Test squad for the tour of India, as selectors confirmed an 18-player squad for the four-Test Border-Gavaskar series.

He joins Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson as options to partner frontline spinner Nathan Lyon on a tour that is expected to feature low, slow, turning wickets.

Swepson has been retained after struggling on Australia’s tour of Pakistan last year — kept in favour of what would be a shock call up for white-ball specialist Adam Zampa.

Victorian Sheffield Shield captain Peter Handscomb has also joined the touring party alongside Matthew Renshaw, despite retiring hurt after a hit to the hip playing for St Kilda in a grade fixture on Tuesday night.

Murphy had only played one first-class fixture prior to 2022, but has rocketed into contention after strong performances for Victoria, Australia A and the Prime Minister’s XI.

At 22, he is viewed as a potential long-term successor to the ageing Nathan Lyon, who to date has not found a sustainable second spinner to partner him.

Murphy currently has 14 wickets to his name at an average of 17.71 over just three Sheffield Shield matches, and bowled Victoria to a final-day win over New South Wales in the last match before the Big Bash.

“Todd has emerged as a strong spin option, having impressed in domestic cricket and recently with Australia A”, said chief selector George Bailey.

“Selection in this squad also provides another opportunity to spend time alongside Nathan Lyon and assistant coach Daniel Vettori in India which will be invaluable to his development.”

Opener Marcus Harris, released from the Test squad after the recall of Matthew Renshaw for the New Year’s Test, has been omitted, while uncapped WA quick Lance Morris retains his place in the squad.

The tour is shaping as a potential debut opportunity for Morris, with Mitchell Starc confirmed to not be joining the squad until after the first Test in Nagpur with an injured finger.

Allrounder Cameron Green is also racing the clock to be fit with a fractured finger sustained in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa.

As foreshadowed by captain Pat Cummins in Sydney, left arm spinner Ashton Agar has been included despite going wicketless in the final Test against South Africa .

Queensland bowler Michael Neser has also been snubbed in favour of Victorian Scott Boland, while West Australian wicketkeeper Josh Inglis misses out as well.

In the event of injury to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, Peter Handscomb will likely take the gloves.

Australia and India will play four Tests in less than two months in Nagpur, Delhi, Dharamsala and Ahmedabad.

Australia has not won in India since their famous 2004 series victory under Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting.

The U.S. cricket team has numerous players of Indian origin, which could present an interesting dynamic on the field in Wednesday's match.
