American indie and alternative rock group Imagine Dragons was established in 2008 and is made up of four members from Las Vegas, Nevada (US). The lineup consists of vocalist Dan Reynolds, bassist Ben McKee, drummer Daniel Platzman, and guitarist Wayne “Wing” Sermon.

The band’s first big break came in 2009 at the Bite of Las Vegas Festival when Train frontman Pat Monahan fell ill. As a last-minute replacement, Imagine Dragons’ first major gig before an audience of 26,000.

Over the next two years, Imagine Dragons followed up with two EPs, Imagine Dragons and Hell and Silence. It broke out in 2011 with the single “It’s Time”, which led them to sign with Interscope Records. The band moved to California and worked with producer Alex da Kid on two more EPs: Continued Silence and Hear Me. Now ready for the big leagues, Imagine Dragons released its debut album Night Visions in the summer of 2012.

Night Visions was a smash hit across the board. The highest-charting rock album since 2006, it sold over 83,000 copies and reached the number one spot on Billboard’s Alternative and Rock Album chart. It topped charts worldwide, reaching the #1 spot in the UK, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, and Canada, and produced chart-topping singles “Radioactive” and “Demons”.

Imagine Dragons launched its Night Visions Tour, and the resulting series of sold-out shows across the US and Europe earned it recognition as “The Best Breakout Band of 2013” from Billboard. While touring, the band worked on dozens of demos which would lead to the band’s second studio release.

Over the course of 2014, Imagine Dragons honed these songs as it worked on other projects like the song “Battle Cry” for Transformers: Age of Extinction and “Warriors” for the esports event League of Legends Championships. By that October, its new single “I Bet My Life” heralded even greater successes in the coming year.

InFebruary 2015, Imagine Dragons’ second studio album, Smoke + Mirrors debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts. The record proved that the band had truly arrived and went on to sell well over one million copies. Another tour ensued in June of 2015 which would press on into early 2016. Along the way, the band also released a cover of the Eagles of Death Metal song “I Love You All the Time” in support of victims of the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris.

For a lot of 2016, the band took a break, releasing just a few singles for the films Suicide Squad, Me Before You and Passengers. Suicide Squad’s “Sucker for Pain,” featuring Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Logic, Ty Dolla Sign, and X Ambassadors, was a smash hit, topping the charts in what was otherwise a quiet year for the band.

In February of 2017, audiences would get its first taste of new music from the band with the song “Believer,” the first new single from the upcoming record, which also appeared in a Super Bowl ad. A few months later in May, the album arrived. Evolve was revealed with a whole new collection of songs, a brand new single (“Whatever It Takes”) and a tour announcement all on the same day. Evolve would go on to be nominated for multiple Grammys and win Best Rock Video at the MTV Music Awards for “Whatever It Takes.”

Imagine Dragons didn’t rest on its laurels after 2017. The Evolve Tour continued, more singles dropped including “Natural,” and a collaboration tune with Kygo called “Born to Be Yours” hit Twitter. But why stop there? Origins, the band’s fourth studio album in six years, hit audiences with full force, making it to number two on the Billboard 200 and #1 on Top Rock Albums.

Finally, Imagine Dragons took a more restful couple of years. As Reynolds focused on new fatherhood and COVID-19 shut down concert venues, the band’s output slowed down to singles and video releases of old songs.

Then, in 2021, Mercury – Act 1 came out. The next year, 2022, a sequel, Mercury, Acts 1 & 2 followed. Produced by the legendary Rick Rubin, the concept album would slap dozens of tracks down with yet another tour ramping up.

Live reviews

The story of Imagine Dragons and their rise in popularity is an inspiring one. They're a band that put out a 4.5 star album (Night Visions) and toured religiously until it finally caught on. They played small clubs and were on the bottom of lineup posters just three years ago. Now they're one of the biggest bands around, headlining festivals and performing in arenas every night.

I was lucky enough to see Imagine Dragons when they were just getting going. I saw them play The Metro in Chicago (one of my favorite venues) in what ended up being one of the best shows of 2013. I also love Night Visions. It would have been the best album of 2012, if not for Mumford and Sons Babel being released that same month.

So when Imagine Dragons announced their summer tour, I was excited to see a Tampa stop included. I was not happy however, to see the show was at the 18,000 capacity Amalie Arena. This was quite the change from their first show in Tampa at the Ritz Theater with a capacity of 1,100.

I also wasn't as excited as expected for the show because the tour is in support of the groups much anticipated second album - Smoke and Mirrors. The record was put out in February of this year, and I was extremely disappointed. In my opinion, the Las Vegas rockers abandoned their alternative roots and made a poppy record that would just get radio play.

That record was on full display for their Friday night Tampa show. Imagine Dragons performed 12 songs from Smoke & Mirrors, essentially playing the album in full. Now I know this was the 'Smoke & Mirrors Tour,' but how about a nod to the album and the fans that got you to where you are today?

Instead, the guys just gave minimal nods to Night Visions. They played the four most popular songs from it ('It's Time,' 'Radioactive,' 'Demons,' and 'On Top of the World'). They also played one acoustic verse each from 'Nothing Left to Say' and 'Bleeding Out.' It was nothing close to the attention that album deserves and fans were hoping for. I would have loved to have heard just one of the following: 'Hear Me,' 'Amsterdam,' 'Nothing Left to Say,' 'Round and Round,' or 'Selene.'

Instead, I was listening to a poppy album in a half empty arena. That's right, sales were weak for this Friday night show in the music friendly community of Tampa. The floor was only at about half capacity. Maybe the $90 price point for a floor ticket was one reason, but it's never easy to get into the show when the band is playing at a venue much too large for their popularity.

Another negative of the night was the formation and style that the band chose to lay out. Lead singer Dan Reynolds played 80% of the show from an extended part of the stage that ran down the middle of the floor. At times, it seemed like a solo show for him, rather than a full band experience. I couldn't even tell you any highlights from the other contributing members of Imagine Dragons.

Lastly, one of my favorite things from the first three years of touring for ID, was their unique and constant use of rhythmic drums. They used to have drums of all sounds and sizes scattered across the stage. Each member would go to their drum station constantly throughout the set, and the beats and rhythms they came up with were addicting to watch. With the exception of 'Radioactive,' that fun portion of the show has completely disappeared from their live set.

Overall, this show was a disappointment. There was a great band that put out a superb debut back in 2003 entitled 'Songs about Jane.' That band (Maroon 5) went on to release 4 more albums, with each being worse than the album before it. At the same time though, their radio play and recognition in the top 40 community has increased with each release. I think Imagine Dragons might be the next Maroon 5.

I’ve been listening to the group since so long, and the first song I heard from them was Radioactive, which everyone knows I’m sure of it. The concert run an hour late, but nobody was complaining and they started with I don’t know why, which immediately put everybody in the mood. There was many generations mixed, and all the adults around me didn’t really knew imagine dragons, weren’t really sure if they were going to like it, and were really surprised to see they were just loving the concert. The group was playing and singing at the perfection, all of them was contributing to the making of each songs, and there was such a good atmosphere it was really incredible. Dan Reynolds (the lead singer) talked really often to the crowd during the show and also took a moment to raise awareness about LGBT youth, which was a really touching moment. Their energy, their complicity with each other, everything was perfect, and the last song, radioactive, there so well known hit, just ended the concert with a great energy. I loved it, probably one of the best concert I’ve ever been. Imagine dragons is not like many artists who just come on stage, say hi, sing ( either in playback, or wrong), don’t interact with the crowd, and get out of stage without a thank you. Imagine dragons talked to us so many times it was really pleasant, I’ve never seen a group or an artist take the time to say something relevant, they even went into the crowd during the show, to the back of the concert hall so people in the back could see them at least for 3 songs. It was perfect, and I sure will go to their next concert, because seeing Imagine dragons in live, is just magic and unforgettable.

Listening to Las Vegas native band Imagine Dragons through headphones is one great experience, but seeing them perform their upbeat guitar and drum tunes in person, paired with the resonating vocals of Dan Reynolds, truly makes for a life-changing event.

The band has now performed all over the world due to their understandable success, and I saw them play at Lollapalooza in Brazil where they dressed in all black and gave the screaming crowd something they wouldn’t ever forget. The mellifluous band has a sort of chill, indie, rock and roll style, but they are far from an independent band – they embarked on a world tour after major success with their single “Radioactive” and have received lots of radio play for their cool guitar strums and cheerful yet relaxing music style.

Seeing the band live really makes you want to get off your feet, and the lively lyrics will truly dare you to try and stand still in one place, as the music urges you to let go and give in to the feeling of the music flowing through your whole body as your hear it the amazing instrumentals and sounds.

At Lollapalooza, the band didn’t require any props besides a simple few lights and their name in the background on a screen. All they need are their instruments, and Dan’s soulful voice.

This was the first concert that we took our two children to (ages 10 and 12) and they had a great time! The venue (Shoreline Amphitheater) was fantastic and we enjoyed our view from the lawn.

The opening bands were engaging and certainly warmed up the crowd! When Imagine Dragons appeared, our kids were really excited and ready for a "full concert experience"! Imagine Dragons did not disappoint! They played all the popular songs as well as some older ones. They even changed stages halfway through the concert which was a great bonus! The band definitely knew how to keep the crowd engaged from asking us to sing along to "Yesterday" and even releasing large balloons for the crowd to bat around throughout the second half of the concert.

Their final few songs, which included Radioactive, were absolutely brilliant! They had so much energy at the end it was infectious! Their extended drumming section in Radioactive was awesome! They ended with two songs instead of a typical walk off and then come back for an encore. Their final song, Believer, was a rocking anthem that had us all walking away singing at the end of the concert. Overall, it was a great first concert for my kids and a great reminder of why live music matters so much!

I haven't been on the Imagine Dragons bandwagon as long as some have. I picked them up after Night Visions came out and they quickly became an act I needed to see. Their catchy blend of pop and rock elements was always going to be a winner live. And it was.

I saw them play to a sold-out Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne. Their support act were British India, a local band who had achieved reasonable levels of success on the national stage. They were solid and a good lead-in to the main act.

They opened with Shots and built an amazing set list from there. They played all of their hits, debuted a couple of new songs they haven't done before and threw in a couple of covers (Forever Young and Beds Are Burning) to fill out their performance. Dan Reynolds is an amazing vocalist and his backing instrumentalists (Sermon, McKee and Platzman) complemented his eccentric and energetic performance style.

The only letdown of the night was the atmosphere. I'm unsure if it was the venue's acoustics or the audience but it wasn't as loud or electric as the gigs I've been to before.

Overall I'd give the show a 9/10 and that will only improve with another album or two of quality content. I'd definitely go see them again.

The concert was really great. Every members of the band had SO much energy that they shared with the public. Dan Reynolds made a speech on the LGBT youth at some point during the concert and that was great, he spoke with his heart and the public gave this love back. The light were blowing our minds and they were at their best during the whole concert.

At some point, there only were instumentals and the singer (Dan Reynolds) lied down on the ground and started doing yoga, which was pretty funny.

In the middle of the concert, they went on the second stage (smaller and in the middle of the room) so everyone could see them.

They ended the concert with the first song we have (my sisters and I) discovered them with six years ago.

I truly encourage people to go to their concert because they are one of the most fantastic band of the 21th century.

PS: if I can share an advise, if you really want to bring a goodie home, buy it BEFORE the concert. At the end, there are a lot of people and, I guess, less choice (we bought it before the concert so we had all the pleasure and time to choose what we wanted)

On October 1st I went to Imagine Dragons concert for the first time. It was a breathtaking performance. Dan’s beautiful and emotional speech is still in my mind, especially the part about things that don’t mean nothing and are given meaning like class, color, race. Dan’s voice is really powerful and very unique that makes you feel goosebumps. His personality is one of the best. He is an honest and a nice person which he expresses through his music, the way he talks and acts, the way he stays positive and inspires us to rise up, believe that the lost things will come back to us, be thankful to yesterdays, sometimes start over and do whatever it takes to make it up to our loved ones and become stronger, no matter how much pain we go through. Imagine Dragons does a great job in creating meaningful, inspirational and emotional music which is very rare in our day and age. My friends and I laughed, cried, danced, sang and screamed so much that we couldn’t talk after it. The feelings are unforgettable. It was an experience worth repeating a thousand times. Thank you Imagine Dragons.

really good live production, dan's voice is very beautiful live and wing's guitar solos were also impressive. the drummer did a very nice piece but unfortunately we didn't hear from the bassist.

we sat in block 102 of the o2 arena which was on the left of the stage. we had a good view but there were a lot of couples around us who were not very enthusiastic about the concert which made the concert slightly sedate to enjoy. if you want to really get into the music I recommend standing but if you want to go with a friend or something to just listen and watch nicely then sit.

also I wasn't really massively impressed with the track list. they didn't sing smoke and mirrors or bleeding out, which we were disappointed by. the encore song was "the fall" which wasn't the energetic fun song the audience was expecting. radioactive and demons were both excellent but I think they wanted to promote songs from the new album.

still would recommend as you can watch nicely or really get into the music.

Well-imagined dragons: an excellent performance from an extremely enthusiastic and (at times almost too) humble band, clearly enjoying every minute of their time on stage.

The support act, Sunset Sons, kicked things off excellently with some high-energy, high-tempo tracks to a very receptive crowd, setting the tone for the main event.

forty minutes or so later, the Dragons burst on to the stage to a huge ovation, got straight into it and kept the pace up the whole way through, only really stopping from time to time to thank the fans, be a bit grateful and have a bit of a joke from time to time.

I'm not sure if I had lower expectations than was fair of this band, who I've only seen once previously at Glastonbury '14 (which mainly involved them all being covered in mud), but for me they massively over-delivered on staging, performance and energy to provide a fantastic night, culminating in the inevitable, uh, golden shower of glittery leaves from above. Excellent stuff.

Sound was pretty horrible, waaaay too loud, even with earplugs, which I almost never need to wear.

Many awkward choices of covers with awkward musical production choices. Feels like as they only have about 4 hits, they just spent the entire first hour of the concert stalling for time, giving every band member a chance for a below-average, horribly sounding solo.

The guitarist's overuse of harmonizer (+/-1 octave) only made his solo even more childish and simply sounded awful. Felt like he was trying to imitate Rage Against the Machine's creative guitar playing, although stealing techniques doesn't make it your own.

I believe that this is what happens when a young band gain a lot of popularity in relatively short time, experience is noticeably lacking here.

Visuals and lighting were good and with high quality though.

Event Details

In celebration of the release of their latest album, “Mercury – Act 1,” Imagine Dragons announce their Mercury World Tour. They will be joined by Grandson, who will be a support act on select tour dates, including Raleigh.

With 46 million albums and 55 million songs sold globally, as well as 74 billion combined streams, Imagine Dragons remains one of the best-selling rock bands, reinventing the genre with their enormous breakout success across the 2010s. Billboard’s Top 3 rock songs of the decade belonged to the band – “Believer,” “Thunder” and “Radioactive.” Formed in 2009, Imagine Dragons developed a grassroots following with a series of independently released EPs before making their major label debut on KIDinaKORNER/Interscope with the 2012 EP Continued Silence. Night Visions, their 2012 full-length debut, entered the Billboard 200 at No. 2 and the lead-off track “Radioactive” topped Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs chart, won a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance, and achieved RIAA Diamond status. 2015’s Smoke + Mirrors debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. EVOLVE, which followed in 2017, earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album and unleashed three No. 1 Alternative radio hits: “Believer,” the GRAMMY-nominated “Thunder” and “Whatever It Takes.” All three songs were also top 5 hits at Top 40 radio, with “Thunder” rising to the No. 1 spot. The band’s fourth album, ORIGINS, debuted atop Billboard’s Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums charts and lead single "Natural" spent nine weeks at No. 1 at alternative radio and set the current record for all-time “most spins in a week” at the format.

Their highly anticipated fifth studio album “Mercury – Act 1” was released on September 3, 2021. Teaming up with esteemed producer Rick Rubin and with its title drawing inspiration from the word “mercurial,” “Mercury – Act 1” is a candid album that abandons metaphorically charged lyrics and instead embraces emotional extremities, holding nothing back. It marks the band’s first album since 2018’s “ORIGINS.”

Ben McKee and Imagine Dragons Embark on 2023 World Tour (Interview)

We sat down with bassist Ben McKee to talk about his playing in one of the biggest arena bands

imagine dragons world tour 2023

Imagine Dragons was formed in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2008, and consists of lead singer Dan Reynolds, guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee and drummer Daniel Platzman. The band released their debut studio album, Night Visions , in 2012. The album’s second single, Radioactive , reached No. 1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs, Billboard Rock Songs, and sold more than 14 million singles in the United States, entering the top 3 of the most selling songs digitally ever.

The band’s second studio album, Smoke + Mirrors , was released in 2015, and reached number one in the US, Canada and the UK. This was followed by their third studio album, Evolve , released in 2017, which resulted in three chart-topping singles, Believer , Thunder , and Whatever It Takes .

Their fourth studio album, Origins , released in 2018, featured the single Natural , which became their fifth song to top the Hot Rock Songs chart. The band released their fifth studio album, Mercury – Act 1 , on September 3, 2021, and its follow-up, Mercury – Act 2 , on July 1, 2022.

Imagine Dragons won three American Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, one Grammy Award, one MTV Video Music Award, and one World Music Award. To date, the band sold more than 75 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling music artists.

Bassist Ben McKee and his bandmates are gearing up for their 2023 world tour, so we sat down with him to talk gear and what it’s like performing on the biggest stages around the globe.

imagine dragons world tour 2023

You’ve been playing Sadowsky basses for a long time. What is it that you love about Roger’s instruments?

I LOVE that man, Roger is amazing. He makes the best basses in the world. If someone else made better basses I’d play them (laughs). Anything I can do for Sadowsky, I’m there. Every time I call the Sadowsky number to talk to somebody, I hear “Hey It’s Roger” and I’m like you’re answering the phone?

What gear will you be using on this upcoming tour?

A while ago, all the tours sort of ran into each other a little bit, and two or three tours ago we decided to really clean up the look on the stage. Before we had speaker cabinets and everything onstage behind us, but we decided to sort of streamline that. Right now we don’t have any speakers, cabinets, or amps onstage. Our guitarist and I both use Kemper rigs for our live stage sound. They’re easy to transport and they’re reliable and a lot of the built-in effects that are in there are great for live sound. When I’m in the studio, I love to pull out all the analog gear and my old 1967 B-15 and all the pedals in the world in front of me. Besides that, I’ll have my Sadowsky basses onstage, the two that I play most. I have a Sadowsky Jazz bass that’s tuned B-E-A-D, it’s the four lowest strings on a 5-string. I have smaller hands and there’s never a time that I really need the 5th string unless I’m playing Jazz-Fusion stuff with chords. That’s when I used a 5-string, when I was at Berklee. Now I really like the feel of a 4-string, anything I can do to keep the weight down. I had a custom paint job done on that is a trans-flag and when I flip it upside down it has a heart. I just wanted something to make sure than anyone in the LGBTQIA+ community at our concerts can see that they are fully supported and fully included. Even if they don’t see someone from the community onstage, they get to see a symbol of themselves on that stage and know that they’re represented up there. I love that bass. The other bass I play the most is a 4-string Sadowsky P-Bass Standard tuning. I use Elixir strings, and my picks are actually the thing I’m most particular about. I use Dunlop Ultex picks, which I don’t think they make anymore.

Where does the sound of Imagine Dragons come from stylistically?

It really comes from our diverse backgrounds, but also being on a live stage is where we really cut our teeth. We had five days of rehearsal before we started gigging. We started gigging 5 to 6 nights a week every week when we were there [Vegas]. People were not coming to see us. These were gigs where we were playing on a stage in the corner of a casino behind slot machines and we were trying desperately to get people to pay more attention to us and all of the bells and whistles, sirens, and showgirls is a sensory overload in those casinos. In order to reach those people, we had to become larger than life when we were on the smallest stages. We had big drums and were moving as much as we could. Dan [Reynolds] was always getting out into the audience and working with them. I think the way we really developed our sound was just from experimenting and finding out what was successful in a live environment, what people connected to, what would turn that head in the back of the room. Someone that’s been sitting there on a slot machine for 3 hours. I think that we tapped into everything we had learned at Berklee with me, Dan Platzman, and Wayne [Sermon], as we had alot of World Music influence. We all have a good sense of rhythm so we were all able to play drums and stuff and I think rhythm is sort of the most core element of music and if you can make that relevant and really prominent and bash people over the head with it sometimes. Since then, we’ve been touring and don’t do the same things anymore, we don’t have to fight for fans every time. Now we’re in these arenas and as we’re composing music, we’re thinking about the way this music is going to perform in this space where it’s going to be kind of writing music for arenas. We we’re always writing music for venues bigger than could contain us. Now we’ve finally arrived at the venues we’ve been writing for.

What is it like working with Rick Rubin in the studio?

Whatever kind of music you listen to, Rick Rubin has produced one of the most influential albums in that genre – everything from Country to Hip-Hop. I grew up being a huge fan of a lot of Rick Rubin albums. When we got to meet him and work with him, it was a different experience than we had with other producers that we worked with before. He was more present. He’s not a musician and doesn’t play instruments, but he is a professional, expert level music consumer and listener. He listens to music in a global way. Musicians that have been training themselves from a young age to listen to music, you reinforce all of these different neural connections and pathways that cause you to go into analytic listening mode when listening to music. Rick has developed and strengthened what the connections the non-musician listener listens to. He can hear the quality of the sound. He can hear a song and tell whether or not it’s going to be received as an honest and genuine performance by the general. He represents the ears of everybody in a way that I don’t think anybody else can. He knows music, songs, and records so well that if he’s trying to push us in a direction, he can pull out a record by an artist you’ve never heard of, something 300 people in the world have ever heard, but it is the exact reference you need to get a song from 90% to 110%. It’s hard to put into words what he does, but if you meet him and talk to him about music, it’s apparent where his genius is.

Las Vegas bands rocking it, coast to coast

The Killers celebrated the “Hot Fuss” 20th anniversary with a fiery club show. Imagine Dragons have added dates to their shows at Hollywood Bowl.

Las Vegas’ superstar rock bands have come a long way from Cafe Espresso Roma and Hennessey’s Tavern.

These are two of the snug venues where, in their larval development, The Killers and Imagine Dragons once graced the marquee. Or, the chalkboard sign near the entrance.

The Vegas rockers continue to blow up, making waves (and news) coast-to-coast. The skinny from New Guinea on both bands:

‘Fuss’ in Manhattan

The Killers celebrated the 20th anniversary of “Hot Fuss” on Friday with a pop-up show at Bowery Ballroom in New York City.

The show in the renowned, 575-capacity venue was announced Wednesday. The band thundered through “Mr. Brightside,” “Somebody Told Me” and (a personal favorite) “On Top” from their debut album.

Beforehand, the band joked on social media, “Happy 20th to Hot Fuss! Only one more year ‘til you can hit the tables in Vegas.”

The 19-song performance was a warm-up for the Killers’ upcoming European tour, during which they play a half-dozen shows at The 02 Arena in London from July 4-July 11.

The band’s residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace is Aug. 14-30, in which “Hot Fuss” is being played end-to-end. This is the first such extended engagement by any Vegas-based band.

The Killers also now hold the record for the biggest single ever in the United Kingdom that has not gone No. 1. “Brightside ” is that song. Showing extraordinary capacity to hang around, “Mr. B.” (as I just started calling it) has been in the top 100 of the U.K.’s Official Charts listings for 20 years.

The song peaked at No. 10 in May 2004. It is also the third-greatest-selling song ever in the U.K. when sales and streams are combined. The song Ed Sheeran says is the U.K. national anthem overtook Oasis’s “Wonderwall” last month for the unique honor.

“It’s funny, I almost don’t feel so much a part of it anymore,” Brandon Flowers said in an interview with Official Charts Company, the U.K.’s leading music-ranking service. “It just exists in the world It’s amazing that I had something to do with it. I almost feel removed from it, because it’s so big.”

Dragons go Hollywood

Imagine Dragons has sold impressively, but not surprisingly for their run at the Hollywood Bowl from Oct. 22-23 and 26-27. It’s a “run” now, as it started as a single weekend, with three dates added to meet demand.

The shows are to promote, and we expect sample freely from, the upcoming release “Loom.” The album is due June 28.

The singles “Eyes Closed” (feat. J. B alvin ) and “Nice To Meet You” have been released. The nine-song album, the band’s sixth studio release, follows the two-part studio album from 2022, “Mercury – Acts 1 & 2.”

The “Loom” world tour kicks off July 30 in Camden, N.J., and runs 36 dates, closing with the L.A. shows. There is no Las Vegas stop.

Celine confides

The more we learn about Celine Dion’s bout with Stiff Person Syndrome, the more we learn how serious is her condition. Dion tells Hoda Kotb in an upcoming NBC News special the spasms she suffers are so intense she suffered broken ribs. They also constricted her throat to the point of strangulation.

In her first TV interview since the 2022 diagnosis, Dion told Kotb: “I had broken ribs at one point, because sometimes when it’s very severe …” Kotb asks her: “It can spasm so hard it can break a rib?” and Dion nods.

The former Colosseum star also said that when she experiences muscle spasms in her throat, “it’s like somebody is strangling you, like someone is pushing your larynx.” She offered, “But it can also be in the abdominal (area), in the spine, in the ribs … It’s cramping, but it’s like in a position of, like, you cannot unlock them.” The special airs 10 p.m. Tuesday.

A moment with Pat

I interviewed Pat Sajak , who has stepped down after hosting “Wheel of Fortune” for 41 years, in the summer of 2009. This was when “Wheel” taped for two weeks at Sands Convention Center.

I asked Sajak about the appeal of the show. He was candid, and on the money.

Let’s face it, we’re not the highest-tech show out there. We could change things up, get rid of the ‘clunk-clunk-clunk’ of the wheel,” he said. “We don’t actually need Vanna (White) to turn the letters, you know? You do walk a tightrope in trying to be contemporary but keep the things that have worked over the years. Anecdotally, I’ve heard that a lot of the appeal is personal.”

Great Moments in Social Media

Imagine Dragons’ front man Dan Reynolds plays a sweet version of “Nice To Meet You” on acoustic acoustic, the message, “Be gentle on yourself.” Find it on the band’s official X page, @ImagineDragons.

Imagine Dragons' Dan Reynolds Says Band Has 'Been Late on Stage Because We're Playing League of Legends '

"People probably think I'm not a gamer, but it's my bread and butter. It's our world," said Reynolds in a new interview

Matthew Baker/Getty

If an Imagine Dragons concert doesn't start on time, it's possibly because the band is caught up in a heated video game match.

The "Radioactive" band's frontman Dan Reynolds opened up about his love for gaming in a new interview with The Washington Post , revealing the hobby has caused the group to delay its own shows.

"We’ve been late onstage because we’re playing League of Legends ," the singer-songwriter, 36, told the outlet of the multiplayer online battle game, which reserves the power to ban players who leave matches early.

Imagine Dragons has a history of collaborating with video game companies. Several of the band's songs have been featured in commercials for gaming brands Ubisoft, Epic Games, Nintendo, Riot Games (the company behind League of Legends ) and more.

The "Believer" group's first time working with a gaming company was about a decade ago, when they performed as the backing instrumentalists for Nintendo composer Koji Kondo at the Game Awards in Las Vegas.

"I geeked out harder on that than when we played in front of [Paul] McCartney ," said Reynolds, who grew up listening to Kondo's work for Super Mario World , in the Washington Post interview.

When it comes to working with major gaming brands, Imagine Dragons isn't "going around knocking on doors" for opportunities, explained the lead vocalist: "They just started reaching out, and we said, 'Absolutely, this is amazing.'"

"Look, I’m really tall, 6 foot 4, never played sports, always did music and drama, so people probably think I’m not a gamer, but it’s my bread and butter," added Reynolds. "It's our world."

Imagine Dragons is currently gearing up to release a new album, Loom , on June 28. Elsewhere in the Washington Post interview, Reynolds opened up about the inspiration behind the band's latest material.

"I grew up listening to singer-songwriters — Dylan, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens. But I love pop music," he said. "I like to create big choruses and songs that I want to hear, and I happen to be in a healthier, happier place with this record, so hopefully that’s reflected in it."

Video Games

How imagine dragons became the sound of gaming culture.

A decade ago, former games journalist Geoff Keighley was busy planning the first Game Awards, a project to build some prestige and pomp around video game award ceremonies.

He had already booked famed Nintendo composer Koji Kondo to perform on piano a medley of songs from the Legend of Zelda franchise, but he wanted a little more sound to fill the Las Vegas stage. And then he remembered: A young band called Imagine Dragons was climbing charts and fresh off a memorable Grammys performance with Kendrick Lamar. The Las Vegas group would become Kondo’s backing band.

“That Koji Kondo moment was super fun and last minute,” Keighley recalls to The Washington Post. “It was a combo of the show being in Vegas, their hometown, and knowing they’re big gamers.”

Imagine Dragons has been all over gaming culture ever since. Of all the band’s accomplishments - filling stadiums and arenas, even performing Beatles songs in front of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr - playing with Kondo remains a highlight, says the band’s frontman Dan Reynolds. He didn’t grow up listening to the Beatles, he grew up listening to the “Athletic Theme” from Super Mario World.

“I geeked out harder on that than when we played in front of McCartney,” Reynolds says.

Reynolds says the band’s ties to gaming trace all the way back to when publisher Ubisoft asked to use its song “Radioactive” on trailers for the 2012 game Assassin’s Creed III. Reynolds loved the series and gave the green light right away.

Since then, various game companies have kept approaching the band. Epic Games’ iOS game Infinity Blade III featured the band’s name and song “Monster” (a collaboration that first caught Keighley’s attention, leading to the Game Awards show). In 2017, Nintendo created a Super Bowl trailer to launch the Switch console with the band’s hit single “Believer.” Riot Games and Netflix commissioned the band to write “Enemy,” the theme song for the hit animated series “Arcane,” now approaching 1.5 billion streams on Spotify.

“It’s not like we’re going around knocking on doors,” Reynolds says, laughing. “They just started reaching out, and we said, ‘Absolutely, this is amazing.’ Look, I’m really tall, 6 foot 4, never played sports, always did music and drama, so people probably think I’m not a gamer, but it’s my bread and butter. It’s our world.”

Reynolds grew up playing old-school adventure games published by Sierra Entertainment, then became a big fan of Blizzard games like Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo.

“Then Dark Souls took over my life,” Reynolds says, adding that the band is always gaming on tour. “We’ve been late onstage because we’re playing League of Legends.” (Leaving a multiplayer League match early can result in a ban, so the band doesn’t risk it.)

Last year, the band released “Children of the Sky,” a collaboration with composer Inon Zur for the launch of Starfield, a marquee Xbox game that lets players explore about a thousand planets. Again, it happened because someone from Bethesda Game Studios emailed the band’s manager about a collaboration.

Imagine Dragons returned to the Game Awards stage in 2021 to perform “Enemy” and a medley of songs from indie studio Supergiant Games. Reynolds says it’s been amazing to see the event eclipse the viewing audiences of other awards shows including the Oscars.

“Geoff just reached out to us and was like, ‘I don’t know how this is going to go, and I’m just shooting from the hip here, you guys want to be a part of this?’ And we were like, oh yeah,” he says. “And then it’s blown up over the last years. He’s such a kind person, so it’s made me so happy to see good people win.”

Now the band is about to release its sixth studio album, “Loom,” on June 28. It features more of the band’s signature sound: danceable anthems drenched in reverb and soaring choruses. The latest single, “Nice to Meet You,” is a fun, funk-inflected dance track about Reynolds’s experience with a partner’s friends getting involved in their dating life.

“I grew up listening to singer-songwriters, Dylan, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens. But I love pop music,” Reynolds says, explaining the airy, upbeat feel of the record. “I like to create big choruses and songs that I want to hear, and I happen to be in a healthier, happier place with this record, so hopefully that’s reflected in it.”

Many Imagine Dragons lyrics revolve around Reynolds’s struggle with depression. Hype classics like “Thunder” are about Reynolds gassing himself up despite overwhelming self-doubt. He admits that “Eyes Closed,” the first single this year (the chorus: “I could do this with my eyes closed”) is empty boasting and bluster that hint at inadequacies he still feels.

Criticism of the band tends to focus on the tension between its marketability and its supposed place in rock music. The Imagine Dragons sound is radio-friendly, approachable and clean, perfect for marketing material. And Reynolds’ choruses are so catchy and concise, you could easily imagine them backing an Apple product launch. iPhone 16 Plus Max? Nice to meet you.

At the same time, Imagine Dragons is one of the few remaining mega acts filling arenas with a real-life electric guitar loud and visible onstage. Critics of the band jeered when the group topped Billboard’s rock charts. Reynolds, for what it’s worth, agrees with them. He owns being a pop act.

“I really think the sentiment of Imagine Dragons ‘keeping rock alive’ is kind of a silly sentiment,” he says. “When I think of rock, I think Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age. I think of a very specific genre that I love, but that’s not what Imagine Dragons has ever wanted to be or tried to be, and it’s not our influences. I didn’t really listen to any classic rock growing up!”

Of course he hears the criticism, but Reynolds says he and the group are happy with their signature sound. They write all their songs based on personal experiences, he says. He focuses on pop hooks, citing classical composers like Chopin and Bach, whom he describes as “very pop.”

“I can genuinely say we’ve never created a record where we’re saying, ‘What do you want, critics? What do you want to hear right now?’” Reynolds says. “I just write songs I want to play. If I’m going to perform them for the next two years, I’d better like them. We’re trying to make sounds that feel good on the ears and make you feel something. And all I’m doing is writing about what’s going in my life. And this happens to be a happy time period.”

And many times, that will mean writing music for the hobby and entertainment medium he’s loved since he was a kid.

“My MO from the very beginning is just following the kid in me. What would little Dan Reynolds love to be a part of?”

Todd Rundgren at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix

Danny Zelisko Presents will bring An Evening with Todd Rundgren to the Celebrity Theatre on June 19, 2024.

Rundgren is, in many ways, the quintessential rock ‘n’ roll enigma, a restless spirit who’s been following his own lead from the start.

As a producer, he’s responsible for classic albums by the New York Dolls, Badfinger, Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, XTC, the Tubes and Meat Loaf, among others.

His “Something/Anything?” album made the Top 200 on Rolling Stone’s 500-greatest-albums-ever list. The left turn that followed that perfect pop masterpiece, “A Wizard, A True Star,” was panned by critics at the time but has inspired reams of raving re-evaluation through the year, the Guardian hailing it as “harmonically richer and more ambitiously deranged than ‘The White Album.’"

His work with Utopia has been embraced by prog-rock fans while power-pop enthusiasts tend to worship the catchier side of his career, including his work with the Nazz. But to the general public, he’s still pretty much defined by five hit singles: “We Gotta Get You a Woman,” “I Saw the Light,” “Hello It’s Me,” “Can We Still Be Friends” and “Bang the Drum All Day.”

I think this tour is going to be a real walk down memory lane for me, and I’m hoping that my audience, many of whom have been with me for 30 years, will also be able to go back in time with me.”

Joe Jackson at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix

Champion was born in 1882 in London's East End. His career was cut short by the First World War, and his songs faded into obscurity until 2014, when his sheet music started to surface: first in Malta, then in England, and, intriguingly, in Belgium, where Champion probably met his end in the trenches.

By 2019, enough songs had been recovered for Jackson to resurrect them with a 12-piece orchestra.
