Unlimited Laundry - pre-order or on board?

I'm planning a 7-day trip on the Nieuw Statendam and noticed I can pre-order unlimited laundry service on the website for $73.50 for the seven days (priced per stateroom, which is great). However, I am assuming if I pre-order that now, it will charge my credit card. The thing is, we're going to have some extra OBC that I am not sure what else we'd use it on. So if we just wait to get the laundry package on the ship, can I use my OBC for that? And if I wait to order the laundry package on the ship, can I expect the price to still be at or around the $73.50 it is to pre-order?

Yes, you can use your OBC for unlimited laundry once onboard. No discount for pre-purchase. HAL recently raised the price, so some that booked online earlier may mention a lower price.

As I recall, there was a price difference of about $12 on the NS in December.

Yes the $73.50 seems high for a 7 day. I thought the new price was $9 per day, making it $63 for a 7 day.  They really have increased the price.  I guess we shouldn't be bragging on here about how great the laundry service is.  I saw a post recently stating "by the bag" option at $35 per bag.  For us 1-2x per week was plenty of clean laundry.  You can stuff that bag really full...

Mary229

For 7 days I would use the all you can fit bag.  At least try it first.  It is incredible how much you can fit in one of those bags.  People report the bag costs $30 but in some locations it is only $20.  Same service , different pricing

You didn't say where you are cruising. On my February 2024 7-day Caribbean cruise, the laundry is now priced at $59.50. The price is usually higher for European cruises.

The cruise is 7 days but we've got 4-5 days before the cruise and two after in the home port. We like to pack a week's worth of clothes so we'll be about ready to do some laundry when we get on the ship. Then if we have unlimited, we don't have to worry about stretching out anything near the end of the cruise with a few days still left to go.

This is a cruise to Norway, out of Copenhagen.

Someone on a Dam ship in that general area just reported the by-the-bag is now $35.

Haljo1935

Correct if you book it now, you pay now and that you can use OBC once onboard to pay for - the price will be the same; no discount for pre-paying.

For years we paid $49 unlimited, $20/bag. Feb this year on Nieuw Amsterdam was $49 unlimited, $20/bag. But May (last month) Eurodam was $30/bag, $59.50 unlimited.

Yes, prices have recently gone up and are different based on itinerary  (Europe is higher than US), so you could expect to pay any price you've seen on this thread depending on where you're going.

I LOVE HALs laundry service-they do great job and take pride in their work, so almost any amount is worth it.

We really like taking home all clean clothes so unpacking is a breeze.

Enjoy your cruise!!

Two years ago I skipped buying it ahead of time, and then discovered aboard the Eurodam that the unlimited price had gone up by $10(IIRC)

in that case if I had purchased it ahead I’d have paid the old price and I suspect no one would come after me for the difference once onboard lol

No they would not - that's the benefit of prey paying - you lock in that price.  🤭

Oops, missed the typo. Pre-paying...but yes always praying price won't go up, lol

They will PREY upon you if the cost goes up.

We have little  wash to do usually a  bag a  week  ,Thus us why , I can wash my  poly & poly cotton sirts my self  in the shower ,same with my boxer bathing suits ,so I just have socks & under wear  ,Ny GW has a bitt more with her blouses need pressing  . We roll every thing as tight as possible   to fit what we need washed & pressed .  So even on a 25 day cruise we would have 5   bags id wash  ,

Some year back I remember reading Rick Steves .He traveled all over Europe with a roll on & a sling over his shoulder , His secret was make as much as possible washable even underwear to quick dry type . On a very long cruise I would not take more than 3 pairs  of shoes ,usually I tsake just 2 pairs of good looking sneakers , what takes most of room in my carry on  are my electronics & cameras

I am with you @mcrcruiser that 1 bag holds a lot of tightly rolled laundry. We have cut our clothing to about half and utilize laundry service on every cruise. We go home with all clean clothes except for what we travel in on the last day. Makes unpacking so much better - from suitcase to closet w/ no detour to laundry room! Added benefit of no concern about pesky luggage fees due to the extra clothes.

And then there is that little smile you get on your face when you find a HAL laundry tag on your clothes some months later!

9 bucket list cruises for seniors and retirees.

These cruise lines appeal to older travelers with adults-only sailings, accessible staterooms and more.

Cruises for Seniors and Retirees

Make the memories of a lifetime on a cruise for seniors and retirees.

Cruises are an often dreamt-about retirement goal, especially for long-time cruise lovers who have always been short on time. Retirement can be the ideal season of life to sail off into the sunset for several weeks, whether to far-off lands like Antarctica or a peaceful journey down the Danube. In some cases, seniors embrace their golden years by booking epic, monthslong voyages around the world.

Many small- and medium-sized ships cater to the over-60 crowd, but that doesn't mean guests will be relegated to shuffleboard and bingo games. Today's seniors still have plenty of adventures to experience and memories to make, both on board and on shore. The following cruise lines offer the top bucket list sailings for seniors and retirees.

Windstar Cruises

Uniworld boutique river cruises, oceania cruises, holland america line, cunard line, aurora expeditions.

Anyone who has ever fancied a near-private yacht-style cruise experience will love the vibe of Windstar Cruises. Each of its yachts holds between 148 and 342 guests, with a 1-to-1.5 crew-to-guest ratio. This makes for more intimate sailings – not only because there's simply less ship to maneuver on foot, but also because Windstar ships have access to ports that megaships aren't permitted to enter. The end result is the unique ability to explore lesser-known destinations and smaller cities. While Windstar is not a strictly adults-only cruise line , you won't see any little ones on board, either. Children must be at least 8 years old to sail on the line, which further adds to the high-end ambiance.

In 2021 and 2022, Windstar's Star Breeze, Star Pride and Star Legend ships received a refresh. The three all-suite yachts were cut in half and enhanced with new suites and amenities, bringing the capacity to 312 passengers on each vessel. These Star Plus Class ships also boast new restaurants, a reimagined spa and fitness center, and more efficient engines, among other improvements. Elevators help make the Star Plus Class ships more accessible for anyone with limited mobility (note that Wind Class ships Wind Star and Wind Spirit do not have elevators). Additionally, Star Breeze, Star Pride and Star Legend each have four wheelchair-accessible suites, which feature a smaller queen bed and reduced "wheel around" space.

On board, passengers can drop by the Open Bridge anytime for an impromptu lesson in chart reading, listen to live music in the Lounge or jump directly into the water from the Watersports Platform. Culinary highlights include restaurant Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso, which serves a twist on modern Spanish cuisine by the 10-time Michelin-starred chef, as well as culinary shore excursions with hands-on cooking classes and chef-led market tours to explore fresh local ingredients.

The cruise industry is abuzz with interest in one of Windstar's newest itineraries, which introduces passengers to the Middle East. The Inaugural Sparkling Sands & Cities itinerary sets sail in November 2023, visiting Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates; Doha, Qatar; and Muscat, Oman, among others. Foodies will be especially interested in the James Beard Foundation's Sparkling Sands & Cities of the Persian Gulf itinerary, scheduled to embark in February 2024. Windstar's other destinations include Asia, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the South Pacific and more.

Spanning seven continents via river, ocean and expedition vessels, Viking is considered a quintessential high-end cruise experience. For more than 25 years, it has provided destination-focused sailings designed to allow its guests to explore the world in supreme comfort. Its voyages particularly appeal to travelers older than 50 who are interested in science, history, culture and cuisine.

Every Viking cruise fare includes a complimentary shore excursion in each port of call, onboard meals, beer and wine (with lunch and dinner service), Wi-Fi access, and all port charges and government taxes. On Viking's ocean and expedition vessels, guests also enjoy complimentary self-service laundry, access to the Thermal Suite in The Spa, high tea service, alternative restaurant dining and 24-hour room service. But the best part for older cruisers may be what's not included on Viking sailings: kids. This adults-only cruise line is dedicated to guests 18 and older.

Viking's fleet – with capacities ranging from 80 to 998 passengers (on river and ocean cruises, respectively) – feature elegant Scandinavian-style decor. The small ship cruises get closer to their destinations, spend more time in port and include more overnight stays, too.

One of Viking's newest ocean vessels, the all-veranda Viking Saturn, debuted in 2023 and focuses on European sailings. Its 10-day Empires of the Mediterranean route from Venice to Athens is particular popular, with stops in Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Greece. Another in-demand route is the Danube Christmas Delights itinerary on the Viking Longships, which visits enchanting villages, cultural capitals and iconic Christmas markets for a festive holiday cruise .

To suit their needs, guests can choose between different activity levels for walking tour-focused shore excursions. For bibliophiles, The Library on each ship is curated by acclaimed London bookshop Heywood Hill, as well as Cambridge University's Scott Polar Research Institute on the expedition vessels. Viking also holds exclusive partnerships with prestigious scientific institutions, which makes it possible for at least 36 experts – including field research scientists, mountain guides, submarine pilots and other specialists – to accompany passengers on each expedition journey.

A pavlova dessert served on board Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Billed as one of the world's most luxurious all-inclusive river cruise lines , Uniworld Boutique River Cruises features small ships with an average capacity of 120 guests and one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios on the rivers of 1-to-2.4. Part of the allure of the small ship size is a more personalized travel experience that delivers passengers to destinations ocean liners aren't able to visit (such as the Venetian Lagoon, where large ships have been banned from entry).

Uniworld ships are akin to floating boutique hotels, designed to reflect the destinations in which they sail – a vast list that includes ports in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. Guests will appreciate the exquisite details on board, including unique artwork from some of the most famous artists in the world (think: Pablo Picasso and David Hockney), handmade fabrics from local artisans and handcarved furnishings.

Additionally, Uniworld's all-inclusive cruise experience includes all onboard meals, which are made with fresh farm-to-table ingredients, as well as unlimited premium spirits and fine wines. In the base fare, voyages also include a selection of shore excursions, daily entertainment, fitness centers, wellness classes, airport transfers, onboard gratuities, high-speed Wi-Fi access and more.

Uniworld makes it particularly easy to visit many of Europe's most enchanting Christmas towns on a single cruise, where passengers can visit the festive holiday markets and get all their seasonal shopping done. For seniors with more time to spare, the Rivers of the World Cruise is a once-in-a-lifetime journey. This 55-day itinerary departs from Lima, Peru , in October 2024 and takes 40 guests across three continents via four ships to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Find  Uniworld Boutique River Cruises  on GoToSea.

This upscale brand recently relaunched under A&K Travel Group with a reimagined vision. Crystal Serenity (which holds up to 740 guests) and Crystal Symphony (carrying up to 606 passengers) underwent a combined $150 million dollar refurbishment that includes updated suites and new wellness offerings at the Aurōra spa. While sailing the high seas with Crystal, passengers' needs are met at every step of the way – a perk made possible by the nearly 1-to-1 staff-to-guest ratio. A dedicated butler in every stateroom and suite will help with packing and unpacking, stocking your fridge, making restaurant reservations, booking excursions and more.

Crystal offers impressive enrichment programming, hosting high-profile lecturers with backgrounds in sports, entertainment and science. Spend some time refining your technology skills at Computer University@Sea and perfecting your ballroom dance moves, photography abilities, golf swing or bridge game. There's also a well-stocked library containing books on a range of subjects, along with board games and a pickleball court.

Dining options on board include Umi Uma, a Japanese-Peruvian dining venue developed by Michelin-starred chef Nobuyuki (Nobu) Matsuhisa. Unlike some other cruise lines that charge a fee for each specialty dining reservation, Crystal allows guests to enjoy one complimentary reservation per person for sailings of 11 days or less. After dinner, nightly entertainment can be found in several venues, such as live music in the Galaxy Lounge.

Crystal sails on itineraries of varying length to the Mediterranean, the Baltic, Alaska, the Caribbean, Canada, Africa and the Indian Ocean, the South Pacific, and Asia. If you're planning a bucket list trip, consider the line's 123-night 2025 World Cruise, which travels to 62 destinations across 31 countries between Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Barcelona, Spain .

The Aquamar Spa on Oceania Cruises

Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

Seniors with a penchant for epicurean delights tend to gravitate toward Oceania Cruises for their cruise vacations – it's known for having one of the finest culinary programs at sea. This cruise line focuses on small ship luxury, with seven ships currently in service carrying between 670 and 1,250 passengers each. An eighth ship, Allura, is set to debut in 2025.

Newer ships like the Vista – the first of the Allura class vessels, which joined the fleet in May 2023 – have wheelchair-accessible rooms and a plethora of onboard culinary venues. A few highlights include Aquamar Kitchen, offering an array of wellness-inspired dishes; The Bakery at Baristas, serving freshly baked pastries; and new signature restaurant Ember, an upscale American eatery. Don't miss the Cellar Master's Wine Luncheon: a two-hour, hand-selected tasting led by the head sommelier that features a five-course menu paired with premium wines for each dish.

Senior cruisers will enjoy the Aquamar Spa's signature massage therapies, which use natural ingredients and modern techniques to release stress and tension. The Vitality Center offers a steam room, a thalassotherapy pool and heated lounge beds for extra relief. Onboard entertainment on Oceania, meanwhile, includes musical performances and immersive shows with dance numbers led by "Dancing With the Stars" choreographer Britt Stewart. The Culinary Center is a fan favorite for seniors, offering the opportunity to practice cooking techniques and learn about the unique flavor profiles of regional dishes.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a location Oceania doesn't sail to, with cruises to Africa, Asia, South America, the Middle East, the South Pacific, the Caribbean, Antarctica and more, as well as transoceanic voyages and 180-day world cruises. Oceania also provides a good overall value, thanks to its included specialty restaurants, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions, round-trip airfare and transfers, and in-port shuttle service.

Holland America Line's Westerdam ship sails through Yakutat Bay in Alaska

Courtesy of Holland America Line

As a premium, midsize cruise line, Holland America Line offers plenty of destinations, excursions and activities aligned to an older audience. The smaller ship size, which averages around 2,000 passengers per sailing, allows for many of the ships to dock in ports that are inaccessible to larger ships, getting passengers even closer to the destinations they're visiting. For older passengers who may have limited mobility, the option to simply disembark the ship without waiting for a tender or other means of transportation can make or break a trip.

Holland America Line, though family-friendly, offers myriad excursions that are primarily adult-oriented and open to all types of adventurers. Shore excursions are clearly marked with an activity level ranging from easy to strenuous, from leisurely wine tastings and relaxing strolls through ancient towns to ATV rides through the jungle and dog-sledding on a glacier only accessible via helicopter.

Onboard entertainment and activities are plentiful; guests often enjoy the multiple music lounges and venues on each ship, along with hosted programs such as bingo and trivia. For seniors who can't get enough of the pickleball trend, Holland America Line has partnered with the Professional Pickleball Association to bring branded courts and equipment on board. After all that action on the court, unwind in the Greenhouse Spa & Salon with a rejuvenating treatment. (Pro tip: Add on the Thermal Suite for access to the healing hydrotherapy circuit and heated, tiled loungers that will melt all your cares away.)

The numerous onboard dining options bring together cuisines and flavors from all over the world, with specialty restaurants featuring menus developed by a team of master chefs known as Holland America's Culinary Council. In addition to casual dining in the Lido Market and multicourse affairs in The Dining Room, each ship also features the Pinnacle Grill, an onboard steakhouse offering high-end meats and seafood. Other specialty restaurants vary by ship and may include Italian eatery Canaletto and the French-inspired Rudi's Sel de Mer.

Holland America Line sails all over the world. It does an especially nice job with its Greek island cruises and Adriatic Sea adventures. One of the line's newest ships, Rotterdam , is a crowd-pleaser with its sleek design details and an onboard art collection valued at more than $4.1 million. Still, longtime favorites like the refurbished Oosterdam and Eurodam host plenty of happy guests.

A White Night party in Monte Carlo on Azamara Onward

Courtesy of Azamara

Another all-inclusive, senior-friendly brand is Azamara, which boasts a long list of perks covered in the base fare. Your one-time payment covers meals and beverages, including standard spirits, international beers and a limited amount of wine by the glass; you can upgrade to a beverage package if you'd like access to premium brands. Other included amenities range from self-service laundry to gratuities to special cultural evenings featuring onboard or onshore performances by locals.

There are four ships in Azamara's fleet. Each carries up to 702 passengers, so they still fit comfortably into the small ship category and can access less-visited ports than larger vessels. Destinations on Azamara include ports throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand, the Americas, and the Caribbean; there are also transoceanic itineraries. If spending roughly half a year on a cruise ship sounds like your ideal retirement plan, consider the Azamara World Voyage in 2025. Over 155 nights, you'll visit 37 countries.

Each of the line's ships has staterooms designed to accommodate guests with mobility limitations, and Azamara has created customized shore excursion tours for guests with disabilities as well. Accessible tours are designed for full-time wheelchair users or guests unable to navigate motor-coach steps.

There are plenty of entertainment options on board, including Club Crooner's hits from current and classic songbirds, as well as ship-specific venues with various song and dance performances. Plus, every cruise hosts a White Night signature dinner and entertainment event on the pool deck (so be sure to pack your favorite white attire). Unwind with darts, arts and crafts, pingpong, shuffleboard, trivia contests, bingo and dance lessons. Don't miss opportunities to attend lectures through the enrichment program.

A refreshment platter served by a lounge chair at Cunard Grills

Christopher Ison | Courtesy of Cunard Line

Cunard Line's ocean liners have sailed between the U.K. and New York since 1840 – and the brand's relationship with the British monarchy is integral to its heritage. As such, each ship is named after a British queen. The newest ship, Queen Anne, joins the fleet in 2024.

In keeping with its history, Cunard Line has several signature experiences that help set the brand apart. Afternoon tea is a Cunard tradition observed daily in the Queen's Room; expect white-gloved waiters serving scones and finger sandwiches alongside infused teas in silver teapots (add Champagne for an additional fee). During gala evenings, guests don tuxedos and ballgowns for a sophisticated celebration you won't soon forget. Themes range from Masquerade to Roaring 20s; you'll get a heads-up before you pack your cruise attire .

Each of the four stateroom grades has its own dedicated fine dining restaurant with excellent service and indulgent menus, though there are several casual dining options as well – not to mention specialty dining venues for an additional fee. A host of activities will keep you busy day and night, including a library, open-air pools, fitness facilities, live music, theater performances, guest speaker events, board games, film screenings, art classes, planetarium shows (on Queen Mary 2) and group dance classes.

Accessible shore experiences are available in many ports, ranging from lower activity-level tours to adaptations for wheelchair users. Accessible staterooms are available on Queen Victoria , Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2 ; these come with modifications like wider entryways, nonslip bathroom floors and shower seats.

A Zodiac cruise in Antarctica with Aurora Expeditions ship Greg Mortimer

Scott Portelli | Courtesy of Aurora Expeditions

Nothing says "once-in-a-lifetime" quite like embarking on an expedition to the world's most remote destinations – and, specifically, to Antarctica. For cruisers looking to explore this far-off land, Aurora Expeditions is one of the most trusted names in the industry. Founded by legendary adventurer Greg Mortimer, the brand sends an education-focused expedition team on each voyage, with a ratio of about one team member per every eight passengers. With an average of just 132 cruisers on these sailings, you'll get more one-on-one time with your expedition team.

Seniors can climb aboard Aurora Expeditions' Greg Mortimer or Sylvia Earle ship for innovative itineraries to the Great White Continent. When the ship isn't pausing to watch breaching whales, passengers can kayak between icebergs, visit penguin colonies or take guided hikes across the tundra. Aurora describes its cruises as "100% climate neutral," with a commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

All of Aurora Expeditions' voyages let travelers explore at their own pace, making it a great option for all ages. There are many included activities on each expedition, such as bird-watching, photography, lectures on wildlife, Zodiac cruises and near-shore excursions. The line will even outfit you with Muck boots and waterproof polar jackets. The entire voyage is laid-back, with an informal dress code.

On board, all cabins have a view of the ocean, and most have their own balcony. Tips are included in the cost of your cruise, and guests can enjoy a complimentary house wine or beer with dinner. Look forward to hearty dishes to help fuel your activities, with some buffet-style meals, a la carte options and a reservations-required restaurant on each ship.

Our 7 favorite summer cruises for all types of travelers

Melinda Crow

The best part of summer cruising is that there are more cruising options than in any other season. Cruises to destinations like Alaska and Scandinavia are highly seasonal; go in the summer, or you can't cruise there at all. Even the Mediterranean is somewhat seasonal, with most cruise lines leaning heavily into summer and moving ships to warmer destinations during the cooler months.

While putting together our list of favorite cruises for summer travel, we looked for options that would appeal to a wide variety of travelers. The one thing all these cruises have in common is that they make planning a summer trip easy. When you book a summer cruise, one transaction gets you transportation to multiple destinations, food, accommodations and onboard entertainment.

Whether you're looking for a short escape or the adventure of a lifetime, here are seven of our favorite summer cruises to book.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Best for short summer escapes: 3- to 5-night Carnival cruises

holland america 75 day cruise

Carnival Cruise Line is an industry leader in short getaway cruises from local departure ports. You can sail to the Bahamas from Florida ports; Bermuda from Manhattan in New York; the Caribbean from Galveston, Texas , and New Orleans; and the Mexican Riviera from Long Beach, California. Each of these destinations promises beaches, water sports and land-based activities that range from cooking classes to all-terrain-vehicle rides.

Most Carnival ships feature top-deck waterslides and miniature golf, plus Seuss at Sea character parades, storytime and themed breakfasts. The Cloud Nine Spa and adults-only Serenity Retreat give adults a quiet place to relax, whether you cruise with kids or without. Carnival is known for having multiple included food venues like Guy's Burger Joint , Guy's Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que and the Mexican BlueIguana Cantina.

Carnival is also budget-friendly. The line's short cruises are affordable while still providing all the food, fun and entertainment you crave on a big-ship cruise.

Best for grown-up fun: Virgin Voyages to the Mediterranean

holland america 75 day cruise

Virgin Voyages deploys ships to multiple European destinations, all loaded with summer fun grown-up style. Choices range from seven- to 12-night Mediterranean adventures (think: round-trip cruises from Barcelona featuring ports of call like Cannes in France or Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza in Spain, where ships often stay overnight, allowing time for a night of clubbing European style). Longer cruises include one-way routes between Barcelona and Rome, adding Italian ports like Florence and Naples. The line also takes in the Greek islands on cruises originating in Athens (Piraeus).

Virgin's adults-only ships carry 2,770 passengers (known on board as "sailors"), all 18 or older. The line claims to offer the ideal cruise for adults who don't care for cruises. Entertainment on board includes pajama parties and immersive naughty nightclub performances. Virgin ships focus on wellness with a techno fitness studio , an outdoor gym and a boxing ring.

Dining choices are where Virgin Voyages really breaks from traditional cruise lines. All 20 eateries on board are included in the cruise fare, and you won't find even one buffet line.

Best for solo cruisers: Greek island cruises on Windstar

holland america 75 day cruise

What better way to sail among the Greek islands than on a gorgeous ship with sails or an intimate yachtlike ship where you never feel like just another number? Windstar Cruises offers summer cruises in the Greek islands, stopping at dream destinations like Santorini, Mykonos and Patmos. Port activities in the Mediterranean lean toward cultural and culinary interests.

What moves the needle toward Windstar for solo cruisers is its standard single supplement of 175%, which dips even lower on occasion. That's quite a cruise budget bonus when most cruise lines charge 200% of the fare for cruising solo.

All Windstar ships carry just over 300 passengers or fewer. You'll feel like you're cruising the Mediterranean on a private yacht. Solo cruisers will find it easy to meet fellow passengers — mixing and mingling are a normal occurrence for almost everyone on such small ships.

The main dining room (Amphora) features solo-friendly open seating each evening. I once met an 82-year-old woman cruising alone on back-to-back Windstar cruises. She had no shortage of invitations to join tables at mealtimes, but when she opted to dine alone, the staff treated her like a queen.

As the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation, Windstar goes above and beyond when it comes to serving amazing food. Menus for both Amphora and a pop-up steak restaurant called Candles are highlighted by selections from James Beard Award-winning chefs — all included in the cruise fare.

Those same chefs are sometimes hosted on the line's special James Beard Foundation cruises. Besides hanging out with these amazing chefs (because they are there to enjoy the cruise, too), guests can go shopping with them as they prepare for menu takeovers using locally sourced ingredients. It's foodie heaven.

Best Alaska cruise: Weeklong Holland America cruises

holland america 75 day cruise

Alaska sits at the top of many summer cruise wish lists. Sometimes it's a beat-the-heat plan. Most often, it's the desire to see the glaciers and wildlife in Alaskan waters and along its shores. You have lots of options for Alaska cruises, but we recommend the tried and true.

Holland America has been cruising in Alaska for more than 75 years and has more itineraries visiting Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) than any other cruise line. You can feel confident that any Alaska cruise you book with the line will be done well.

Holland America ships carry between 2,000 and 3,000 passengers. While the passengers on other itineraries tend to be a mostly adult (and often senior) crowd, that changes during the summer season in Alaska. Families with children of all ages are welcomed and catered to with youth programs on board, including a Junior Ranger program in Glacier Bay.

Options include round trips from Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seattle , as well as one-way trips between Vancouver and Anchorage, Alaska. Add-on pre- and post-cruise land tours are a Holland America staple for those wishing to explore inland Alaska.

Best for families with teens: Weeklong Caribbean cruises on Royal Caribbean

holland america 75 day cruise

Finding a cruise itinerary that pleases teens and preteens can be challenging. The megaships Royal Caribbean sails in the Caribbean fit the bill nicely. Look for the line's biggest ships cruising from Miami , Port Canaveral (near Orlando) and Galveston.

Most itineraries alternate between Eastern and Western Caribbean routes , all with beachy ports of call with plenty of water sports and land-based adventure options. Many itineraries also visit the teen-pleasing private island destination Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas. It's an island playground with beaches, a pool, sand sports and a water park seemingly designed with easily bored teens in mind.

The ships themselves, however, are likely to be the real stars of the cruise for your teens. These ships carry close to 6,000 passengers and come loaded with waterslides, surf simulators, zip lines and rock-climbing walls. Teens ages 13 to 17 have a hangout space all their own, and the preteens have loads of age-appropriate activities to keep them on the go when the ship is not in port.

Royal Caribbean's biggest ships are family-pleasing masterpieces, cruising on sunny itineraries that make for incredible summer vacations.

Best for families with littles: Short Bahamas cruises on Disney Cruise Line

holland america 75 day cruise

Putting smiles on little faces is the mission behind any Disney cruise, and if the littles are smiling, moms and dads probably are, too. Disney sails short cruises from multiple ports. Look for summer cruises to the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral with stops at Disney's private island, Castaway Cay . Three to five nights is ideal for kids in the 4 to 7 age group — and their parents.

Disney Cruise Line cabins are designed with families in mind. They have split bathrooms (toilet in one, shower-bath in the other), privacy curtains for napping and plenty of storage.

Besides the fun onboard character encounters, water attractions and live musicals based on favorite movies, Disney cruise ships offer the most kid-friendly menus of any cruise line. Plus, 24-hour in-room dining is complimentary — perfect when the need for a quieter meal arises.

Imagine if the best parts of the Magic Kingdom were put on a ship for a much smaller crowd to enjoy, and you'll understand the magic of a Disney cruise summer vacation.

Best for a cooler European vacation: Scandinavia cruises on Viking

holland america 75 day cruise

If you're looking for a European getaway where the weather isn't as hot as in the Mediterranean, Scandinavia is calling your name. You can cool down while experiencing the summer beauty of the Norwegian fjords and the cultural delights of Denmark and Sweden. If you're an older adult, Viking has your cruise.

In fact, Viking has multiple options. Cruise lengths range from seven to 28 nights, with a long list of possible ports of call, including Oslo, Norway; Copenhagen; and the Norwegian ports of Bergen, Stavanger and Honningsvag (in the far north). And don't forget Iceland. Viking offers seven-night circumnavigation cruises of the land of fire and ice, as well as longer sailings that include Reykjavik as a port of call.

Viking ships carry just 930 passengers, all in cabins with private balconies. The ships feature seven dining options, all included in the cruise fare. Beer, wine and soft drinks are complimentary during lunch and dinner, and at least one tour is also complimentary in each port of call. Viking is an adults-only cruise line, so all guests must be 18 or older — though its loyal fans tend to be retirees.

Viking ships make seeing the incredible sights of Scandinavia not only possible but comfortable. At the end of a day ashore — sometimes spent on excursions skimming across the waters of fjords in rigid inflatable boats or exploring tiny fishing villages near, or even above, the Arctic Circle — you'll return to relax in one of the best complimentary thermal suites at sea. If that's not enough, you'll also dine on extraordinary cuisine without worrying about extra costs.

Bottom line

Summer is by far the busiest cruise season. Destination choices expand exponentially, giving you more possibilities than in any other season. Even getting to the port, whether driving or flying, is a tad easier in summer than it can be in winter.

The best summer cruise matches your travel needs at this moment. Luckily, an abundance of cruise options makes it possible for almost anyone to find their match.

9 Best Culinary Cruises for the Most Delicious Trip You’ll Ever Take

The best culinary cruises to book in 2024.

F or many, food is the best part of travel—and I can relate. I've taken cruises all over the world, and they've led to many culinary firsts for me: My first-ever lobster was on a Caribbean cruise when I was just a teenager, my first bite of reindeer came in a cozy bowl of chili during an Alaskan cruise, and my first (and last!) time eating escargot happened on a cruise in the Mediterranean. While these dishes were all parts of the all-inclusive menus on my cruises, I decided to kick things up a notch on the foodie scale by hopping on board the growing trend of special culinary cruises, which feature food and wine in a variety of special ways. These days, you’ll find the best cruises partnering with celebrity chefs, featuring specialty-dining venues and offering excursions filled with meals you’ll dream about long after you return home.

"I helped start the first culinary-themed cruises in the early '90s when I began noticing interest, and today this concept is more popular than ever," says Executive Chef Rudi Sodamin, head of culinary arts on Princess Cruises and Master Chef for the Holland America Line. "Experiential food and beverage experiences are often some of our most popular activities on board. It is my goal to surprise and delight guests while also educating them and meeting their every gastronomical desire."

Getting hungry yet? We’ve rounded up the best themed cruises for every type of foodie—from seafood lovers and wine aficionados to fans of French, Italian and Spanish cuisine. I’ve been on my fair share of these cruises, including a recent one to the Mediterranean, and trust me when I say these trips may just become your favorites of all time .

Best for Napa Valley wine pairings

Princess 7-day pacific wine country cruise.

If you love Napa by land , you'll love it even more by sea, and it's now an experience you can have on any Princess Cruises ship sailing North American itineraries. In spring 2023, the cruise line partnered with Wagner Family Vineyards (the producers of Caymus wines), a leader in Napa Valley cabernet, for its five-course Caymus Vineyards Winemaker Dinner. Held two or three times per cruise, it features a dinner for up to 12 guests that could very well be the highlight of their entire vacation. On a recent sailing, which started in Vancouver, British Columbia, and wended its way through San Francisco and Los Angeles, the food was fresh and sophisticated—and tailored to guests’ dietary preferences as needed.

The Winemaker Dinner menu consisted of an amuse-bouche (beef carpaccio or marinated fresh oyster mushrooms), a first course (fresh summer black truffle risotto with 36-month-aged Parmigiano Reggiano), main course (prime beef tenderloin with blossom artichokes or seared king salmon with giant prawn), cheese course and dessert (a beautiful chocolate raspberry creation). Oh, and each course was perfectly paired with the appropriate Wagner wine—including cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir and sparkling wine—hand-selected by Chuck Wagner, the owner and winemaker of Caymus Vineyards.

It takes a talented team to pull off an epic meal like that as well as the other offerings on board. "At Princess, we have such a diverse group of chefs, which is a huge benefit to us, as we are able to use their expertise to introduce authentic flavors from all over the world," says Sodamin. "I present food as art—to be created with passion and served with love."

  • The food is specifically crafted to complement the tasting notes of the wines.
  • Wagner Family Vineyard wines are available at all restaurants on the ship.
  • Some Princess Cruise itineraries offer memorable shore excursions to Sonoma wine country.
  • There's an additional cost of $140 per person for this experience and a slight upcharge for all Wagner wines at any meal on the ship.

Best for fresh seafood with a celebrity chef

Holland america line 7-day eastern caribbean cruise.

Fans of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto now have another way to experience his Japanese cuisine beyond his various restaurants around the world: on board the Nieuw Amsterdam . Holland America debuted Morimoto by Sea on Dec. 16, 2023, offering Asian-inspired dishes and beverages from Chef Morimoto, the cruise line's "Global Fresh Fish Ambassador." On this Caribbean cruise , you'll dine on appetizers such as sticky ribs, hamachi tacos, Morimoto fresh-tuna pizza and a sushi plate. Main courses include crispy fried whole-market fresh fish, angry lobster pad Thai, Japanese vegetable curry, and a surf-and-turf with wasabi-mayo lobster and grilled Wagyu kalbi. Watch for pop-up Morimoto by Sea events once per cruise on the fleet's other 10 ships too.

  • Holland America's new Global Fresh Fish Program offers more than 80 varieties of fresh fish sourced locally
  • The restaurant also highlights Chef Morimoto's exclusive alcoholic beverages, including a rosé and sake.
  • The menu includes vegetarian and vegan options.
  • There's a $55 coverage charge per person, plus an additional 18% gratuity.

Best for French food and wine

Uniworld boutique river cruises 8-day brilliant bordeaux cruise.

The France-based S.S. Bon Voyage is the perfect choice for food and wine–loving cruisers: This Uniworld river cruise is basically a floating boutique hotel designed to immerse guests in French culture and wine. The Southwest France itinerary features the country's beautiful landscapes, wines and culture in Fort Médoc, Cadillac, Blaye and Libourne. On board, head to La Cave des Vins, a specialty dining venue that features a communal table in a private dining room where guests will experience a cooking demonstration and culinary experience that captures the essence of France .

Additional onboard dining experiences include La Brasserie, serving traditional bistro fare, and Le Grand Fromage, offering menus reflective of the local cuisine and prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Excursions take guests into the Bordeaux region for activities such as a walking tour and wine tasting at Saint-Emilion; an artisanal wine tasting at Château de Cazeneuve; and a bike ride tour through the lush Médoc vineyards.

  • You'll get to explore one region (along with its food and wine) more deeply, rather than visiting multiple countries.
  • The ship holds only 124 guests, for an incredibly intimate experience.
  • Six days of excursions are included—and all are hosted by English-speaking local experts.
  • It has a higher price point, but it's the most all-inclusive cruise line. (It includes premium spirits and wine, gratuities, wellness classes, airport transfers, Wi-Fi, entertainment, and bicycles and Nordic walking sticks for onshore use.)

Best for local foodie experiences

Windstar cuisines and cultures of spain, portugal and france cruise.

Windstar is the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation (JBF), the nonprofit culinary arts organization that celebrates, supports and elevates the people behind America's food culture. The Foundation firmly aligns with Windstar's commitment to fresh and local epicurean experiences around the world, as well as efforts to reduce food waste. Join Chef Tanya Holland—this Top Chef Season 15 contestant is known for her inventive take on soul food and was the host and soul food expert on Food Network's Melting Pot—on a 10-day cruise focused on the cuisine and cultures of Spain , Portugal and France. Windstar culinary cruises include a chef-hosted dinner with wine pairing, two cooking demonstrations (with recipes you'll take home!) and a market tour with the chef.

  • Foodie-focused excursions include a river cruise with wine tasting in Porto, a vineyards and cellars tour in Bordeaux, and an oyster tasting in Cancale.
  • Windstar offers other world-class meals on board, with nightly menus crafted to highlight the regional cuisine and inspired wine pairings.
  • The newly remodeled Star Legend carries only 312 guests, and all cabins are suites.
  • This cruise has a higher price point than some of the others.

Best for satisfying any appetite

Royal caribbean icon of the seas cruises.

Can you even imagine a single ship holding 40 different dining and drink venues? That's just one of the many impressive things that the world's largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas , has to offer. No matter what flavors you're craving—we're talking pizza by the slice, sushi, caviar, oysters, burgers and tacos—you can find it on board.

Royal Caribbean is introducing several firsts on this ship, including the Empire Supper Club, an eight-course journey of traditional American fare (think: Wagyu New York strip steak topped with fresh-shaved truffle) that's perfectly paired with live jazz music. Other newcomers are the AquaDome Market, the line's first food hall with five dining options; a milkshake bar called Desserted; and the Celebration Table, a private 12-seat dining experience with family-style service perfect for commemorating a milestone. In the evenings, grab a cocktail at Dueling Pianos (a first of its kind in the fleet, with battling baby grands), a glass of prosecco at the new walk-up champagne bar Bubbles or a pint at English pub Point & Feather.

  • This ship sails the Eastern and Western Caribbean, so some excursions will offer rum tastings, Caribbean food tours and lunches the local way.
  • Each cruise stops at Perfect Day at CocoCay, the cruise line's private island, which offers a slew of restaurants (most of which are complimentary) and bars (if you've purchased a specialty beverage package for your cruise, it will apply here too).
  • You'll also find Royal Caribbean restaurant staples on board, including Sorrento's Pizza, Sprinkles ice cream, Chops Grille and Giovanni's Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar.
  • You'll have to pay extra for certain dining venues, as well as all alcoholic drinks and specialty coffees.
  • It's more expensive than most Royal Caribbean cruises because it's a brand-new ship.

Best for sushi with a celebrity chef

Crystal 14-night cruise from athens to rome.

Crystal is already known for its high-end and award-winning culinary experiences—and now it's brought one of the most legendary chefs in the world on board. Behold Umi Uma, a restaurant created by Master Chef Nobuyuki (Nobu) Matsuhisa for Crystal's Serenity and Symphony ships. This innovative Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine features delectable dishes like a crispy rice cake with spicy tuna tartare, Nobu-style lobster tacos, grilled Australian Wagyu beef fillet steak and Nobu-style black cod. Or choose the Sushi with Connoisseur, which features various sushi, sashimi and rolls.

Certain itineraries—for instance, the Athens to Rome Mediterranean cruise —make foodie excursions a priority, with a tasty street food tour of Izmir, a cooking class in Mykonos, olive oil tastings in Crete, a pizza tasting in Naples and wine tastings in Turkey. Between the onboard offerings and seaside activities, this is truly one of the most well-rounded culinary cruises.

  • Two complimentary reservations for two people on voyages 12 to 22 days in length, and unlimited free visits for guests staying in Crystal Penthouse or Junior Crystal Penthouse Suites.
  • There are 11 distinct dining options on board, including 24-hour in-suite dining service.
  • There's nearly one staff member per guest, and the crew will know you by name.
  • Reservations above the complimentary allotment are $50 per person.
  • It has a higher price point than some other cruises on this list.

Best for Mediterranean excursions

Viking iconic western mediterranean cruise.

Some people take cruises for the at-sea experience; others use it as a mode of transportation to get where they want to go. While every minute on board a Viking ship is spectacular, the real magic happens off the ship on this Western Mediterranean itinerary through Spain, France, Monaco and Italy. Because the Viking Saturn is a small ship (930 guests), it can dock overnight in some ports, which means you can enjoy authentic dinners and nightcaps in town.

On this particular cruise, you'll have that experience in Barcelona (paella and a flamenco show, anyone?) and again in Florence (you're in the famous Tuscan wine region, so have a glass or two of Chianti with your pasta). Shore excursions include cooking in a Tuscan castle, dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant, food and wine trails through Tuscany, and "The Kitchen Table," where you'll join the ship's executive chef for a tour and shopping experience through the local market (you'll gather the ingredients that the chef will prepare for you back on board).

  • Beer, wine and soft drinks are included with lunch and dinner; plus, you have access to complimentary 24/7 room service.
  • Onboard dining options include regional cuisine and locally sourced ingredients, as well as food-and-wine pairings at The Chef's Table specialty restaurant.
  • You get one complimentary shore excursion in every port of call.
  • It's pricey, but a lot is included in the rate.

Best for Michelin-starred dining

Celebrity 7-night spain, france and italy cruise.

Great meals and wine are a part of any Celebrity sailing—it was voted best cruise line for food and dining by Cruiseline's Member Choice Awards in 2022 and holds an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator for 2023. Each ship has myriad complimentary dining venues inspired by global and regional flavors, alongside specialty restaurants ranging from seafood and oyster bars to Paris-style bistros. And at the helm sits Celebrity's Global Culinary Ambassador, Chef Daniel Boulud, who holds many culinary accolades from the James Beard Foundation, as well as multiple Michelin stars.

His onboard restaurant, Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, features a menu that gives guests a taste of the places that have inspired him around the world, such as 5-Spice Duck Pithivier, Brazilian Moqueca and Risotto au Homard. He has also designed signature dishes for Luminae, the cruise line's private dining experience included for all guests of The Retreat. (Guests who book these suites have access to premium amenities, such as free drinks and Wi-Fi and access to a private sundeck and lounge.)

  • Celebrity Ascent is the fleet's brand-new ship (it debuted Dec. 3, 2023), and it's the most innovative in the Edge series.
  • There are 32 distinctive restaurants, bars and lounges on board—including 14 cafes/bars/lounges, eight specialty restaurants, four main dining restaurants, four complimentary casual dining venues and two exclusive restaurants.
  • This itinerary hits some of the most fantastic foodie cities in Europe: Barcelona and Valencia, Spain; Nice, France; and Portofino, Florence and Rome, Italy .
  • A cover charge applies for dinner at Le Voyage.

Best for vegan food

Carnival cruises.

Calling all plant-based diners who love to cruise: A new vegan menu is currently available on Carnival Freedom in Port Canaveral, Florida, and Car nival Horizon in Port Miami—and will soon be implemented fleet-wide in a phased approach. Carnival chefs created recipes for each of their dishes to be prepared without the use of animal products, and the proteins included are made from meat substitutes. Look for tempting options such as Hawaiian Salmon Poke made with plant-based salmon, Spaghetti Carbonara with vegan bacon, Grilled Tofu Steak, and Eggplant Cutlet a la Parmigiana. For dessert, try the Cappuccino Pot de Crème or Key Lime Velvet Cake. Off the ship, the Caribbean is no stranger to plant-based foods, from rice and beans to perfectly ripe tropical fruits, so you'll have plenty of options there too.

  • One of the most affordable cruise lines , with four-day Bahamas cruises starting under $250 per person.
  • Meat eaters shouldn't miss celebrity chef Guy Fieri's mouthwatering burgers at Guy's Burger Joint.
  • Adult beverages can be found on the Lido Deck at RedFrog Rum Bar and BlueIguana Tequila Bar.
  • The vibe tends to be rowdier on Carnival cruises.

holland america 75 day cruise

If Japan is on your travel bucket list, why not take the scenic route?

Holland America Line’s new Majestic Japan cruise will take guests there and back over nearly two months in 2024. During the 53-day cruise, one of the cruise line’s Legendary Voyages , passengers will also visit Alaska and Hawaii and Canada, and feature multiple overnight stays.

“This cruise allows us to offer Japan ‘from your doorstep’ with no more than a domestic air flight to Seattle,” Paul Grigsby, the line’s Vice President of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, said in a statement.

Here’s what travelers can expect.

When is Holland America Line’s Majestic Japan cruise?

The Majestic Japan cruise will sail round-trip from Seattle on Sept. 1, 2024, on the line’s 1,964-passenger Westerdam ship.

Where will the cruise sail?

The cruise will make its first stop in Vancouver. Passengers can then take in views of glaciers in Alaska’s Inside Passage and Stephens Passage, before visiting ports including Juneau and Sitka.

“Because we can linger on our way, we have chosen to visit some of the best ports in Alaska, including Kodiak and Dutch Harbor, before landing at Kushiro, Hokkaido as (the) first port of call in Japan,” Grigsby said. Other ports include Yokohama and Kobe, where the ship will stay overnight, Kochi and Hiroshima.
