The Ultimate Guide When Exploring Zurich plus it’s Muslim Friendly.

muslim friendly zurich | The Only Guide You Will Need When Exploring Zurich plus it's Muslim Friendly.

Switzerland is officially a Swiss Confederation country located in Western and Central Europe bordered by Italy, France, Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein. Switzerland is divided into 26 cantons (German, French, Italian, Romansh) depending on their location. Cantons are called the member states of the Swiss Confederation. Interestingly Switzerland doesn’t have an official capital but rather a de facto capital, the city of Bern in the canton of Bern.

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Zurich.  It is the most visited city in Switzerland and home to the largest financial district in the world, despite having only approximately 400,000 inhabitants. They are also a very popular tourist destination for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. It is a captivating and beautiful city visited by millions of visitors each year.

Zurich’s train station is Europe’s main railway intersections with over 1,900 connections per day. Intercity trains leave every half an hour and connect many Swiss and European cities by train all within a few hours of each other, such as Paris, Miles, and Munich.  It is also an airline hub for Swiss airlines which makes Zurich an easy to reach the city and a perfect place to visit whether it is for a weekend away or a family vacation.

Positioned in the north-central Switzerland at the northwestern tip of Lake Zürich the official language of Zürich is German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect. Zurich has been permanently settled for over 2000 years from the times of the Romans, however, there is evidence of early settlements dating back to 6,400 years B.C.

56 out of the 111 sites of the UNESCO prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps are located in Switzerland. The prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps are a series of settlements in and around the Alps built from around 5.000 to 500 B.C. on the edges of lakes, rivers or wetlands. Many of these prehistoric dwellings today are located under water or have been built on top of them. However many museums have exhibitions with artifacts from the era. These artifacts today present a true to life picture of what life in the Neolithic and Bronze era looked like.

As a Muslim traveller, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to finding Muslim-friendly attractions. There are plenty of museums, nature exploring and shopping activities ready to please every visitor.

Lake Zurich

muslim friendly zurich | The Only Guide You Will Need When Exploring Zurich plus it's Muslim Friendly.

Lake Zurich or Zürichsee as it is known in Swiss is a lake extending on the southeast of the city of Zurich. The lake is formed by the river Linth which starts from the glaziers of the Glarus Alps; a form of mountains in the Swiss Alps.

The lake offers beautiful views and creates a tangle of promenades, parks, and gardens which are perfect for exploring during your visit in Zurich. The views and scenery make this beautiful city even more attractive. During the summer many locals and tourist even swim in the lake on designates public beaches and baths. The waters can reach temperatures up to 20C during the hot month of August.  One of the most fun ways of exploring Lake Zurich in the summer months is by taking a boat around its shore. It is definitely a must when visiting Zurich.

Old Town (Altstadt)

muslim friendly zurich | The Only Guide You Will Need When Exploring Zurich plus it's Muslim Friendly.

One of the most breathtaking places in Zurich must be the Old Town (Altstadt), which is definitely the heart and beauty of Zurich. Striking 19th-century buildings and cobbled streets with a view of the lake make this part of Zurich truly magical. Beautiful cafes, shops, and galleries accommodate you through the small streets and beautiful buildings which inevitably end up by the shores of Lake Zurich.

The old town makes the perfect starting point for exploring Zurich and it is the home to many of the city’s attractions. Highly recommend for you to enjoy the sunset in the Old Town since the glow of the sun alongside the beautiful buildings make a picturesque background drop for photos.

Swiss National Museum

The Swiss National Museum is one of the most important art museums of cultural history in Europe. It is located next to Zurich’s central station and within walking distance from the Old Town and Lake Zurich.

The museum has a large collection of prehistoric pile-dwelling artifacts. Once you step into the museum you are taken on a journey from the prehistoric dwellings to the Middle Ages and all the way up to the 20th century. It also hosts a large gothic and porcelain collection as well as wooden sculptures, panel paintings, and carved altars.

muslim friendly zurich | The Only Guide You Will Need When Exploring Zurich plus it's Muslim Friendly.

Zoo Zurich is located just above the city of Zurich in Zurichberg and it spans over 27 hectares of land. It is the largest and most visited cultural and educational institution in Zurich. The main objective of the Zoo is not only to provide a fun experience for its visitors but also to get people interested in animals and to encourage them to play an active and important role in nature conservation and protection of animals.

When visiting the Zoo Zurich you must not forget to visit the Masoala rainforest hall which opened in 2004. The attraction takes its name after the Masoala peninsula in Madagascar, which is also the source of the hundreds of different native plants and animals. A great way to explore

The attraction is named after the Masoala peninsula in Madagascar and is the source for the hundreds of different native plants and 60 different native animals in this hall.

Bahnhofstrasse (Station Street)

muslim friendly zurich | The Only Guide You Will Need When Exploring Zurich plus it's Muslim Friendly.

Time for shopping. Bahnhofstrasse is the main shopping area of Zurich located in the city centre. It is also a home to some of the most exclusive and expensive brands in the world if you can afford it will be one of a kind shopping experience.

A great place to spend a day enjoying the old architectural buildings and strolling around some of the most expensive boutiques and banks in the world. The street is largely pedestrian and starts from Zurich’s main train station taking you to the famous Paradeplatz square, home to some of the most expensive real estate properties in Europe.

Practical Tips

Transportation.

Zurich offers great transportation links not only within the city but also connecting to Zurich airport and other Swiss cities. A large number of locals as well as tourists use the public transport to reach and explore the city. It is easy to navigate, also all locals speak English and they are super friendly if you need help. I would highly recommend using the public transport as it is cheaper than taking taxis and also much safer.

Halal restaurants

Zurich is the most visited city in Switzerland by Muslims, the majority of whom are from the Middle East. The city offers plenty of options for Halal food. Some of the best choices for Halal food restaurants are:

  • Yallah Habibi Meinrad-Lienert-Strasse 27, Zurich 8003, Switzerland | Opening times 11:00 am – 12:00 am
  • My Kitchen Franklinstrasse 6, Zurich 8050, Switzerland| Opening times: 11:00 am – 2:30 pm 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
  •  Bombay Karachi Stampfenbachstrasse 32, Zurich, Switzerland | Opening times  10:00 am – 09:30 pm
  • Güven Restaurant & Market Bahnstrasse 80, Regensdorf, Canton of Zurich 8105 | Opening times 11:00 am – 10:00 pm

Prayer Facilities

There are several prayer facilities in Zurich so finding a mosque would not be difficult.

  • Madhni masjid or Islamic Society Zurich. http://www.masjid.ch/  It is located in Weinbergstrasse 147, Zurich, Switzerland
  • Islamic Cultural Association Center | Birmensdorfer Street 273, Zurich 8005

Accommodation

There are plenty of accommodation options for Zurich. Some cheaper than others and it all depends on your budget. If you want to find the best options I always start with Hotels.com and Tripadvisor.

Best time to travel

There is no off-season in Zurich. The city is beautiful all year around. However, if you do not enjoy crowds, avoid visiting Zurich during spring and summer when prices are higher and there are more tourists.

Zurich is one of my favourite cities in Europe. The views over the alps, lake Zurich and the very friendly locals make it a perfect city to explore and visit over and over again. There is something magical about Zurich because every time you visit you fall in love with this city for different reasons. With many halal food options and places to pray there is not excuse not to visit Zurich this spring.

St. Gallen Halal Travel Guide

Saint Gallen  (St. Gallen, German:  Sankt Gallen ) is the main city of eastern Switzerland. For travellers, its main draw is the centuries old  Abbey of Saint Gall , a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a world famous historic library. It’s a place packed with listed heritage buildings and well-maintained museums. And if you are tired of all the urban highlights, Saint Gallen also serves as a gateway to the Appenzell Alps.

Possibly the highest city in Switzerland, St. Gallen is a north eastern destination located in the dip of the valley above Lake Constance and peering up at the resplendent snow-capped peaks of the Appenzell Alps. Its breathtaking location brings an abundance of snow during the winter time and offers some excellent outdoor and recreational activities in picturesque surroundings. St. Gallen is a popular tourist destination and is a small mountain city that has plenty to offer. Small by many European standards, the resident population is stands at about 160,000 people at last count.

Free of traffic and full of charisma and nostalgia, St. Gallen’s panorama looks like it has come straight from the pages of a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale book. Founded by an Irish Monk who settled here as a missionary in 612, the small city quickly flourished under Benedictine rule. The regime required the study of literature and contemplative studies, and it also insisted on a library for these purposes. As the community and the city grew in leaps and bounds, St. Gallen was internationally known as a prosperous city during the Middle Ages.

These days, St. Gallen is known as a university city, seeped in history and famous for its love of cultural activities and events. The city provides the perfect stop off for visitors wishing to base themselves for travels to the Appenzell Alps, Lake Constance and the Santis.

The Best Time to Go

St. Gallen is one of those magical places that is great to visit all year round, although depending on what you are coming for of course, the weather is much better between the months of April and October, during summer. Expect the summer daytime temperatures to hit a maximum of 22°C (72°F) during July and the winter daytime temperature to drop to a chilly – 5°C (23°F) in December and January.

There is a lot going on during the summer time, lots of festivals, events and exhibitions, so this tends to be peak season for visitors coming into the city. However, snow sports enthusiasts come from all over the country to enjoy skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities so don’t expect it to be a sleepy town any time really. Being so close to Zurich, being just an hour away on the train, people tend to combine St. Gallen as part of their Swiss tour making their way from the big city of Zurich through to the countryside of Lake Constance and surrounds.

Because of its popularity during every season, if you are not a fan of lots of people, you may wish to visit outside of school holiday periods and come to the city in between peak seasons. April and May are lovely, the weather is getting warmer and it is just before the summer season brings loads of people out of the woodwork. September and October are the same, the weather is still nice, although getting cooler and it is sort of an in between time for the city, but great to visit with all the fall festivals, and it won’t be unpleasantly cold just yet.

Getting Around in St. Gallen

There is nothing quite like the picturesque beauty of Switzerland and there are many ways to explore the towns, cities and surrounding nature areas. If you are visiting St. Gallen and really want to get out there and explore the mountains, beautiful Swiss scenery and zip along through the winding mountain roads, then hiring a car will be the best bet. There’s nothing like a leisurely drive in a little sports car, top down, wind through your hair as you whizz through the stunning Swiss passes before heading off to a quaint country restaurant for lunch.

But if you are pressed for time and really want to see a bit of everything, there is going to be very little point in meandering around and trying to navigate the city and surrounds on your own. Many visitors do like to book a tour through the city, a bus tour or a private car with a driver and a personal tour guide. This way you are able to experience a lot in a short amount of time and don’t have to worry about picking up and dropping off a car or spending valuable time figuring out where to go.

But if you are going to be in the city for a few days and would like to just hang out and experience life as a local, you are in luck. The city is very easy to navigate on foot and for the most part of Old Town, there is virtually no traffic at all, and if the weather is nice, this is a great way to explore. There is a great public transport system consisting of trains and busses, which all run on perfect Swiss time. Both the trains and the buses have connections that run to the outskirts of the city every day and are always perfectly on time.

If you are in old town, you can pick up one of the many taxis along the Marktplatz, but if you are going hiking in Trogen or Speicher, then you will need to jump on a connection at the Trogenerbahn. The train station has plenty of bike rentals, but it may be advisable to check up on times ahead, just in case.

  • Zurich International Airport  ( is the closest international airport to St. Gallen. Direct trains between St. Gallen and the airport run twice an hour with a travel time of exactly one hour, see  SBB
  • Bodensee-Airport Friedrichshafen   . would be an alternative airport.
  • St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport  ( 19 km (12 mi) north east of Saint Gallen ).  with connections to Vienna and seasonal to Mediterranean destinations.

St. Gallen is the major hub for northeastern Switzerland. Trains between St. Gallen and Zurich depart several times per hour with a travel time of at least 1hr 2min. The St. Gallen train station is 500 m from the old town and is surrounded my numerous hotels, restaurants, and shops. If you want to get quickly to Munich, 3 times a day the  Eurocity  from Zurich stops at Saint Gallen. The main train station also acts as terminus for a number of local train lines running to Appenzell and Trogen.

Outside the main train station is a central hub for bus and  Postbuses  to get around St. Gallen and to surrounding smaller villages.

The Old Town of St. Gallen is almost void of traffic and is therefore best enjoyed on foot.  The VBSG buses  connect to the fringes of the city and run frequently and punctually. Bus tickets can be purchased at major bus stops or on the bus from the onboard vending machine. Standard fare is Fr. 2.50 and is valid for one direction only.  Taxis  are always waiting at the train station and along the Marktplatz in the old town.

The Trogenerbahn  is your connection from St. Gallen to great hiking trails in Speicher and Trogen.

Bike rental  is available at the train station, but check the opening hours before planning a trip.

Parking is available underground in the Migros shopping Centre garage, near the train station. The garage is spacious and safe but like many things in Switzerland it closes on Sunday.

At the eastern corner of the city you can find  the Botanical Garden  which houses over 8000 plants.

In August there is the Inline one-eleven, 111-km  Inlining Marathon .

  • Museum im Lagerhaus ,  Davidstrasse 44 .   Museum for naive art and outsider art.
  • Watch football  (soccer) at  FC St Gallen , who play in the Super League, the top tier of Swiss football. Their home ground is Kybun Park (formerly AFG Arena), capacity 20,000, at Zürcherstrasse 464, 3 km west of city Centre. The ground is shared by second-tier side FC Wil.
  • Säntis and the Alpstein range are an easy and spectacular day trip from St. Gallen.

Shopping in St. Gallen

Switzerland has a well-earned reputation for being expensive in everything from the food, the accommodation and most certainly the shopping, but visitors will be pleased to know that there are a number of delightful hidden treasures to be found here, especially if you are shopping the in Old Town region, near to the Abbey, at the flea markets there. Be charmed by lots of vintage treasures and glorious finds and good deals on anything from antiques to clothing. Look out for the distinctive tents.

There are lots of nice shops in the main shopping area in the Marktplatz in between Old Town and the Bahnhof. Find lots of sidewalk cafes, cobbled walkways with shops, coffee shops, chocolatiers, big name brand stores, high end boutiques, quaint little tea shops and perfumeries. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon meandering around, popping into the stores, having a quick coffee with the paper or feasting on a delightful pastry after a few hours of heavy shopping.

The area between the Bahnhof (railway station) and the Old Town is the Marktplatz, the main street of a collection of pedestrian-only streets filled with shops. Within the area, there are numerous shoe stores, tea shops, coffee houses, perfumeries, and mainstream clothes stores like H&M.

While the weather is nice, there are occasionally flea markets set up along the streets of Old Town, just a few streets away from the Abbey. If you happen to be lucky and catch a glimpse of some tents, check them out. There are some surprisingly good deals and treasures.

Local Interest

The Open Air Festival

Having been going strong since the 1970s, the Open Air St. Gallen Festival is one of the oldest running festivals in all of Switzerland. It is held in the German area of the country and is the second largest festival in the region.

It is a music festival that has a line-up that never sleeps. It is located at a camping site, so part of its charm is that concert goers can watch their favourite band perform from the comfort of their very own tent. It is a beautiful tree lined setting in the valley of the River Sitter. Just try and stay awake and you will be able to see all the bands that play right through the festival held from the end of June to the start of July.

  • Rorschach is about 10 km to the northeast direct at the Lake Constance. Check it out for the lake and nice promenade. In August there is the international sand-sculpturing contest. From Rorschach to Kreuzlingen you have a nice 40 km route for biking and in-lining.

South of St. Gallen is the Canton and Town of Appenzell and the Alpstein mountain range. This area of green pastures, steep wooded valleys, pretty farm buildings with a stunning mountain backdrop is picturesque and, apart from the town of Appenzell, little visited by tourists. The Alpstein range provides some spectacular mountain walks and is well served with mountain huts and cable cars.

The Perfect Zurich Muslim Friendly Itinerary in One Day for First Timer

With only one day to spend in Zurich, I felt overwhelmed with what to put on my itinerary. There’s so much to see and do in the city and I wanted to see it all!

Zurich may not be the capital of Switzerland, yet Zurich is Switzerland’s largest city. Famous for its super-secret Swiss banks and the low tax rates attract multinational companies to set up their headquarters there, including my ex-employer LafargeHolcim headquarter.

Approximately 30% of Zurich residents are foreign nationals and don’t be surprised if you could easily found Malaysian expat in the city. The best part of Zurich is most of the people are so helpful, polite and smiling every time we asked for directions. It’s time to hit Zurich!

Check out my Muslim Friendly day trip itinerary to Zurich!

#1 The Best Place to Start Your Zurich City Tour by Walking Along the Limmat river at Limmatquai

This is the best place to start your visit to Zurich. Start here as an introduction to the entire city and the history. You are standing at Zurich’s New Town and facing Zurich’s Old Town which divided by Limmat river.

If you are coming from Zurich airport, catch the train from the airport to Zurich Hauptbahnhof in just 11 minutes. Once here, you will find yourself in the immediate centre of town on the Limmatquai – Zurich’s famous restaurants and Rathaus (City Hall) street. Alternatively, find Parkhaus Hauptbahnhof in your GPS to park your car if you are driving, it is just next to Sihlquai bus parking. The main reason we parked our car there is because it is very near to Toplumu Külliye Mosque (Mosque in Zurich), so we can perform our prayer on the way back.

You can take a boat trip along this river to see the wonderful view of Zurich Old Town

Beautiful swans happily swimming in Limmat River

#2 Pass by Zurich’s iconic landmark Grossmünster and Fraumünster churches

Grossmünster and Fraümunster churches are the most distinctive landmarks on Zurich’s skyline, standing tall on each side of the Limit River.

The twin towers of the Grossmünster is one of the architectural icons in Zurich. You can climb up to the top of the Grossmünster tower for only few Swiss Francs and have views over the city. The photo of these towers is one of the most famous shots taken in Zurich by both locals and tourists alike.

Grossmünster is an iconic landmark in Zurich

#3 A Great Entrance Way into Zurich Old Town is by Crossing Rathausbrücke

Where to Eat Finding halal food in Zurich is fairly easy. Thanks to the mushrooming Döner Kebab all over the city and there is one nearby the Rathausbrücke (Zurich City Hall Bridge). Their main courses are pizza, falafel, diner kebab and everything you can see on the picture. Döner kebab is the number one street food found mostly everywhere in Germany and I noticed the trend is coming to Zurich city. We had our early lunch there and continue wandering the city.

Choose to eat at Halal Turkish doner kebab nearby Rathausbrücke. I love their pizza!

Have a great view of Zurich city from the Rathausbrücke. Grossmünster on the left & Fraumünster on the right

#4 Roam the Old Town at Zurich Altstadt

The old town of a city is usually one of the best parts to visit if you’re there as a tourist, and Zurich’s Old Town or Altstadt in German is no exception. Architecture in the Old Town ranges from medieval masterpieces to beautiful Renaissance buildings, making it a nice mix of different styles and stunning to stroll through. Zurich’s Old Town is divided into four parts, Rathaus (City Hall), Hochschulen (Universities), Lindenhof (lime tree courtyard) and City. Each of these have their signature famous landmarks which distinguish them from each other.

You can take a guided tour to learn more about the history of Zurich’s Old Town or just take a quick look around on your own. Other great ways to see the highlights of Zurich is by bus tour , cruise or ferry and cable car ride .

#5 Admire the View from Lindenhof

Walk up to Lindenhof which is a pretty little square on a hill in the city centre. Sit on one of the benches and enjoy a beautiful view over the Limit and the Old Town, with it’s flat-roofed pleasure boats and the busy Limmatquai. You can also see the Grossmünster church, Zurich City Hall, Limit river and the university. It is definitely a romantic, peaceful spot and the best place for taking photos of the city.

Have a great view of Zurich Old Town from a square on a little hill named Lindenhof.

Getting here from Rathausbrucke, walk down until you find Miu Miu store, turn right into Strehlgasse & go straight.

#6 Go Shopping and People Watching along Bahnhofstrasse

Bahnhofstrasse is home to local and international designers, also renowned for being the world’s most expensive shopping streets. The entire street runs from the Zurich Hauptbahnhof to Lake Zurich, so it is great walk or you can easily hop on a tram for the journey to the lake. Near the train station you will find the usual high street brands like Zara and H&M, meanwhile on the Lake end of the street you will be greeted with high end stores such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Patek Philippe, you name it.

There are numerous cafes or parks where you can sit down and relax, watching the elite of Zurich stroll by. The street is mainly pedestrianised, making it really enjoyable to walk down. The Bahnhofstrasse is a must-see for every visitor!

Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station) is the beginning of Bahnhofstrasse. I had goosebumps walking and seeing the famous Bahnhofstrasse despite my nephews photobombed my photo!

#7 Enjoy Boat Cruise on Lake Zurich

Take a boat cruise at the end of the famous Bahnhofstrasse at Zurich Bürklipatz. Take a leisurely boat ride on Lake Zurich and be rewarded with views of the beautiful Zurich’s Old Town buildings and see Zurich city from another angle. Complete boat route and price can be found on Zurich’s Official Website .

#8 Perform Prayer Comfortably at Toplumu Külliye Mosque (Mosque in Zurich)

On the way back to our parking lot at Parkhaus Hauptbahnhof, we drop by Toplumu Küliyye Mosque and perform our prayers before heading back to airport. As far as I can recall it is located on Level 3 of the building. Ladies praying room is locked and look for the mosque staff for the key to the prayer room. Interestingly, there is halal grocery store and barber shop in the men praying hall. It was very kind of them when I saw my nephews came out of the door with smiling faces and junk foods on their hands, they got it for free from the grocery store.

Located at the heart of Europe, Switzerland is a treasured darling of the world. Switzerland is a small country, about the same size as the Netherlands. Although Switzerland's neutrality, watches and Roger Federer has been well documented to be famous, tours around its breathtaking naturally beautiful sites are what people are after.

Those who come to tour Switzerland are in it for the great outdoors. From soaring snow-capped Alps facing sparkling lakes to taking the scenic route via The Golden Pass Line, a tour around Switzerland offers scenery and a breath of chilly fresh air like no other. You can also choose to tour around the cities of Zurich, Bern or Geneva as Switzerland offers fast, efficient and safe public transport.

Want a unique experience away from the city? Look no further than the Grand Tour of Switzerland, where the journey IS the reward. On this tour, you visit what is quintessentially Swiss with 5 Alpine passes, 12 UNESCO World Heritage sites, 22 glassy lakes, countless meadows and mountains. Dubbed “the best road trip of the Alps", this 1600km of pure clean energy road trip experience that only caters to electric cars, has more than 300 charging ports.

To avoid big crowds while enjoying pleasurable weather, we advise you to go around mid-April through mid-October. For skiing and snowboarding action, the best snows typically fall in January and February, although the first high-elevation slopes typically open in November and close in March. Food, too, is not to be forgotten as you tour and skii your way around Switzerland. Although it might sound cliche, chocolate fondue in Switzerland is indelibly woven into the country’s dietic menu. You can also try Rosti, a thinly grated potatoes, pan-fried until a golden crisp or Papet Vaudois made out of a mash of leeks and potatoes that are stewed for hours.

From systematic transport around the cities to walking at the great outdoor to have a fantastic of its vistas, Switzerland offers an ever new experience for every time you come to tour this small, yet beautiful country.

Assalamua'laikum. Get in touch with us for any enquiries regarding this package. We typically respond within 1-2 working days.
