  • Al Murray has announced a new Pub Landlord live tour for next year
  • Guv Island runs from 2nd February to 24th November, across the UK and Ireland
  • Tickets are available from Ticketmaster

Al Murray will take to the road again in 2024 with new tour Guv Island .

Returning as his iconic Pub Landlord character, the comic will play more than 70 dates across the UK and Ireland.

Beginning on 2nd February in Crewe, stops include Portsmouth, Stockport, Cardiff, Motherwell, Chatham and Dublin before concluding on 24th November in Belfast.

Guv Island will also see Murray performing at the celebrated London Palladium on 2nd May.

Review: Al Murray’s latest ‘Guv Island’ tour is fresher than a newly brewed pint

If you’ve ever seen him perform, you know exactly what you’re going to get at an Al Murray gig. In many ways, it’s the same act that he’s been doing for 30 years. His Pub Landlord character is still the same beer-swilling, banter-fuelled bartender with an affinity for the band Queen and a strong distaste for French and German people.

That isn’t to say, however, he’s ever predictable. In fact, what Al has refined over his years of stand-up is his consistent ability to be the opposite — to subvert expectations and improvise with the audience with masterful ease. He gives us what we want while simultaneously being full of surprises, which is why he remains among the top ranks of the UK’s greatest stand-up comedians.

gov island tour al murray

As the lights in the Marlowe Theatre dim and the starting announcement is made, Al’s entrance is as brash as ever, with a custom theme song based on his tour title, “Guv Island,” blasting out of the speakers. He then makes his trademark entrance, sloshing his beer over the front row, roaring “cheers” with his hands in the air and rattling off his beloved catchphrases (“Let’s hear it for the beer! All hail to the ale!”). Even if you’ve seen it a hundred times, it’s impossible not to raise a grin as Al lights up the room and makes the audience go wild.

As always, the first half hour of the show sees Al jeer with the audience. No one in the front rows is safe — lectures are given to anyone with a job not considered “proper” (like a builder or plumber), the elderly gents are asked what D-Day was like, and the overweight members are classed as “chunky monkeys” destined for a “forklift funeral.” Rory the railway man got a right roasting, in particular, which made for a show highlight. It felt as though Al could have easily kept this going for the entire show and it wouldn’t ever get tiresome.

gov island tour al murray

Of course, he does have rehearsed material as well which is just as entertaining. He mixes some very relatable insights with a heavy dose of satire, with some observational humour that makes a surprising amount of sense while other takes are clearly parodic Pub Landlord patter. As Al gives both barrels to prime ministers, vapers and easily offended youths, he still manages to integrate some improv as he brings previous audience participants back into the discussion.

You would assume that poking fun at the modern political climate would be like shooting fish in a beer barrel for Al, with his old-school persona clearly clashing with the progressive types of today. It’s an all-too-common topic for many stand-ups, yet Al somehow makes his material on Gen Z and TikTok addiction still feel highly original.

gov island tour al murray

It’s Al’s body language that makes his performances special, and this gig was no exception. He struts around the stage with a complete command of the audience’s attention, occasionally walking over to his bar for a refill as though we really are visitors to his pub, and always knowing just the right time to take a sip of beer to enhance the joke that little bit more.

It takes a truly skilled comedian to make the audience roar with laughter without saying a word. When a member of the audience told Al that he was a banker, a communal “oooh” echoed from the crowd and Al slowly turned with a knowing grin, stiffly removing his jacket as though warming up for the lecture of a lifetime. This gesture alone received howls of excitement before Al even had a chance to rip into the poor fellow.

Al keeps up the high energy until the very end, bowing out, as usual, with a musical performance. This time, it’s a new song called “We Are Not Americans,” which is much catchier than it has any right to be. If I had one complaint with this show, it’s that my face ached with laughter as I exited the theatre.

gov island tour al murray

Every comedy fan needs to see Al Murray perform live at least once — that’s all it takes to make you want to see him again and again. Previous attendees will already know that every show he does is unique thanks to his mockery of the audience, and you will be pleased to know that he has never been more skilled in his ad libbing. As for the new material, just like a a newly brewed pint, Al’s latest routine feels fresher than ever.

PGA Tour reports 'progress' without details in meeting with Saudi wealth fund leaders

The PGA Tour reported progress without details from a face-to-face meeting between its negotiating committee and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia as it tries to work toward a deal.

“We want to get this right, and we are approaching discussions with careful consideration for our players, our fans, our partners and the game's future,” the tour said in a statement released Saturday morning.

The meeting in New York on Friday evening involved the “transaction committee” of PGA Tour Enterprises and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund that pays for rival LIV Golf.

Rory McIlroy is on the committee and said he was encouraged by the progress. He referred to the three-hour meeting as “very productive, very constructive, very collaborative.”

“Definitely things are heading in the right direction,” McIlroy said after the third round of the Memorial. He participated on a video call. “A lot of progress was made. I can’t really say much more than that, but it was really positive.”

PGA Tour Enterprises is the commercial group that came out of the framework agreement announced a year ago among the PGA Tour, PIF and the European tour.

PGA Tour Enterprises brought on Strategic Sports Group, which invested an initial $1.5 billion earlier this year. Negotiations are ongoing to bring in PIF as a minority investor, and there has been more activity than previously believed.

McIlroy, who joined Tiger Woods and Adam Scott on the transaction committee, said it has been meeting with PIF representatives every Monday, Wednesday and Friday over the last couple of weeks. The tour referred to negotiations as “accelerated” in recent months.

Friday's meeting was the first in-person discussion since players and board members met with Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas the day after The Players Championship in March.

The tour said the committee and PIF have been meeting “multiple times weekly to work through potential deal terms and come to a shared vision on the future of professional golf.” It said only that “more progress was made” in New York.

“We remain committed to these negotiations, which require working through complex considerations to best position golf for global growth,” the tour said.

McIlroy said those multiple meetings are more about financials, such as the investment possibilities of PIF and SSG.

“But I think last night was more talking about the future of the game and the vision, and that was where I thought there was a lot of progress that was made,” he said.

Woods and Scott are on the full PGA Tour Enterprises board, along with player directors Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson, Patrick Cantlay and Peter Malnati.

McIlroy resigned from the PGA Tour board last November, and there was an unsuccessful attempt by Simpson to have McIlroy replace him. McIlroy, the strongest voice who has gone from heavy criticism of LIV to being more willing to compromise, is part of the transaction committee and ultimately does not have a vote.

But he has relationships with both sides of the table. McIlroy had said he would be more in listen mode when the business leaders — Al-Rumayyan and his team at PIF, a PGA Tour Enterprises committee that includes four SSG investors — sorted through details.

“We're there to maybe give a perspective from player’s point of view,” McIlroy had said Thursday. “But, I mean, this is a negotiation about an investment into PGA Tour Enterprises. This is ‘big boy’ stuff, and I'll certainly be doing more listening than I will be talking.”

He said Saturday he did weigh in on occasion.

“The mute button was turned off a couple of times to chime in,” he said.

Pga tour on meeting with liv golf's yasir al-rumayyan: 'we want to get this right', share this article.

gov island tour al murray

After Rory McIlroy confirmed earlier this week that a number of PGA Tour representatives, including Commissioner Jay Monahan and Tiger Woods, would be meeting in person with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the Tour released a statement on Saturday morning that the meeting went off as planned.

Here’s what was released by the Tour:

As previously stated, our negotiations with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) have accelerated in recent months. Representatives from the PGA TOUR Enterprises Transaction Subcommittee and the PIF have been meeting multiple times weekly to work through potential deal terms and come to a shared vision on the future of professional golf. On Friday evening, an in-person session in New York City included the entire Transaction Subcommittee and PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and his team, where more progress was made. We remain committed to these negotiations, which require working through complex considerations to best position golf for global growth. We want to get this right, and we are approaching discussions with careful consideration for our players, our fans, our partners and the game’s future.

McIlroy said in pressers prior to this week’s Memorial that members of the Tour’s Transaction Subcommittee have talked three times a week with the Saudis. The New York meeting represented their first in-person gathering since March. The other members of the committee are Adam Scott, board liaison Joe Ogilvie, Enterprises chairman Joe Gorder and Fenway Sports Group principal John Henry.

The PGA Tour has entered into an agreement for Strategic Sports Group to invest at least $1.5 billion and as much as $3 billion into the Tour’s new for-profit entity. The Tour and PIF met in March in the Bahamas after the Players Championship for the first time. Jimmy Dunne, whose secret meeting with Al-Rumayyan in early 2023 led to the Framework Agreement, resigned from the Tour board in mid-May citing “no meaningful progress” toward a deal with PIF. Woods and Jordan Spieth, both fellow Tour player directors, disagreed with Dunne and called that a false narrative.

In an exclusive interview with Golfweek , Ogilvie characterized the first meeting between player-directors and Al-Rumayyan as “perfect.”

“It was a perfect first meeting. When we were going into the room, one of the big things was how do we address him? If we’re gonna address him as His Excellency, that’s just kind of weird,” Ogilvie said. “He comes in the room, shakes everyone’s hand, and looks you right in the eye and says, ‘My name is Yasir. Please call me Yasir.’ I had heard that he’s a nice man and that he loves the game of golf, and nothing told me otherwise after meeting him. It would be naive to think that we’re going to come out of that meeting with a handshake deal and say, ‘We’re done here.’

“It was a very good meeting and you could see that there was a mutual respect between he and Jay, which is also good.”
