Known for its maritime heritage, the city is home to many beautiful canals and harbors, including the picturesque Göta Älv river and the bustling Göteborgs Hamn port. Romantic restaurants, modern architecture, and often looked in favour of its more famous counterpart, Stockholm, Gothenburg is a beautiful city of Sweden’s West Coast. Here’s a free and self-guided Gothenburg walking tour to help you get to know the quirky Swedish city on a more local level!

Like many European cities, Gothenburg is best explored on foot, though there is also a fantastic transport system in the form of trams and buses. For this walking tour of Gothenburg, I highly recommend wearing comfortable shoes as there are cobbled lanes in places (particularly around the Fish Market).

Although most of this self-guided walk is flat, the part at the end around the Haga District and up to the Skansen Kronan fort gets a little bit steep in places. In terms of dining options, you’ll be delighted to know that Gothenburg has a wonderful foodie scene , just waiting to be explored. Some of my top recommendations include Kafé Magasinet and Restaurang Atelier.

Distance: 4.7 km

Walking time: 1 hour

The first stop on this walking route is probably the most famous building in Gothenburg. The Feskekôrka is quite literally translated as the ‘fish church’ and is a fish market inspired by Gothic architecture.

Constructed in the 19th-century, the architect felt that fish was so integral to the city of Gothenburg that he constructed the indoor market to serve as a homage to the trade. Close to the Rosenlund Canal, the building also a restaurant within which serves a sea-inspired menu.

Feskekorka, Water's Edge, (Fish Church), Gothenburg, Sweden

If you want to do a little shopping while in the city, or you’re simply looking for a quaint café in which to enjoy the Swedish art of Fika (a happiness ritual which involves enjoying coffee with cake!), then be sure to wander around Magasinsgatan.

Home to plenty of independent boutiques and shops, you’ll likely want to purchase several beautiful Swedish design pieces should you choose to check out any of the shops!

If you’re looking for a great place to hang out on a rainy day in the city, or simply wish to shop in some independent boutiques, then you need to look no further than the Victoriapassagen (Victoria Passage) .

Stretching between Vallgatan and Södra Larmgatan, the passage was constructed at the end of the 19th-century and is now a lovely street to stroll along, especially if you’re looking to escape some rainy weather!

Free and self-guided Gothenburg walking tour. Looking for the best things to do in the Swedish city of Gothenburg? How to get to know the city on a local level (Skansen Kronan, Haga District)

For those looking for the opportunity to delve further into Gothenburg’s foodie scene (or are simply looking to escape some bad weather!), I highly recommend a venture through the Saluhallen.

Free to visit, the Market Hall is filled with produce from all over the world. Home to spices, coffee, and local delicacies, in total there are over forty shops and stalls!

I personally recommend Flickorna Kanold- their chocolates are simply delicious! Elsewhere in the vicinity, you’ll find several places in which to purchase lunch.

One of the prettiest spots in the city can be found not far from the Clarion Post Hotel in the form of the Fontänbron, the fountain bridge.

The area surrounding this bridge is home to a set of bridges spanning the Harbour Canal, and connecting the Southern part of the Östra Hamngatan to the Northern part.

Come summertime (or even in the winter) the coolest place to hang out in the city is the Palm House, part of the Garden Society. Open on a daily basis, all throughout the year, once inside this set of greenhouses you’ll soon discover a pretty oasis of greenery. Modelled on the Crystal Palace of London, the Palm House dates all the way back to 1878.

For lovers of Fika, coffee culture, and Scandi design, the historic Haga district is an absolute must when visiting Gothenburg. Once on the fringes of Gothenburg, today this district has been incorporated into the city of Gothenburg itself.

Home to plenty of coffee shops and boutiques, during the month of December, one of the best Christmas markets in Gothenburg is held in the heart of this district.

Free and self-guided Gothenburg walking tour. Looking for the best things to do in the Swedish city of Gothenburg? How to get to know the city on a local level (Skansen Kronan, Haga District)

The most ‘Instagrammable’ coffee shop in the city is that of Kafé Magasinet . Home to two spaces; an indoor bar and a plant-covered conservatory area, this café has a great selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes, as well as a mouth-watering menu of desserts, including raw vegan options!

Kafe Magasinet, the most instagrammable coffee shop in Gothenburg, Sweden

The final stop on this Gothenburg walking tour is that of Skansen Kronan. Offering a 360-degree bird’s eye view of the city, truth be told, the hike up to the top is pretty steep! Dating all the way back to the end of the 17th-century, this domed structure is characterised by its crown roof and has 4-5 metre thick walls.

While many people maintain that the best time to visit Gothenburg is in the summer months when the days stretch on for hours and the weather is warm, a trip to the city is well worth it during other seasons as well.

After all, if you spend a weekend break in Gothenburg in the winter , then you can expect to find plenty of beautiful Christmas markets and the chance to go shopping in the sales.

Although English is well spoken in many parts of the city, I still did find myself reaching for a translation app on my phone on a fair few occasions. As such, I highly recommend purchasing a simple Swedish phrasebook in advance.

When it comes to finding the perfect hotel to stay at, while Gothenburg is not nearly as popular as the Swedish capital of Stockholm, certain events during the year mean that at certain times, all the best hotels and guesthouses are booked up.

As such, I highly recommend booking your Gothenburg stay well in advance. Check here for the best accommodation prices in Gothenburg.

Four centuries of remarkeble and exciting stories Gothenburg has turned 400 years old, and that’s four centuries of remarkable and exciting stories. Join us on a walk from Stora Hamnkanalen to Hagakyrkan. Hear about the huge city fires and how the canals were the city’s lifeblood. After the city’s walls were demolished, a green area was planted around the old city, a breathing hole for the population. During the 19th century, many of the city’s stone houses were built. Who built them and for what? During the walk, we talk about people’s lives and about buildings that have been important to the city and its inhabitants throughout the centuries.

The guided city tours takes place in collaboration with Goteborg & Co.

THE FORTIFIED CITY

Tuesday to Friday 29 aug–1 september and 5 september–8 september 15.00–16.00

The walls and ramparts were demolished in the 19th century, but a surprising amount remains, if you know where to look. Join us on a walk in search of Gothenburg’s old fortifications.

The art of backpacking & adventures to get out of your comfort zone – tips and advice, 7.5 things to do for (almost) free in gothenburg, sweden.

Last Updated on July 17, 2024 by Lohanna Reis

* Gothenburg , the 2nd biggest city in Sweden , is the place Rodrigo and I are currently calling home. It’s a great city and our friend Djordje Milosav, a student here, wrote an article for us with a free thing you can do here each day of the week. Enjoy!

Things you will need:

  • 5 minutes to read this article
  • 7 days in Gothenburg (or less)
  • 1 pair of running shoes and some sports clothes
  • You don’t really need anything else but 5 is a great number.

Gothenburg Free Activity #1: Monday Foam Rolling Class

It’s February (this actually applies from the end of November until the beginning of April – optimistically), so when you get up in the morning, the sun simply doesn’t. You feel that you could pay for it to get up, but then you remember that you are on a budget. Depressing, I know.

Anyhow, as with any other Monday, most of the museums are closed (but are free on other days if you are under 25!) so you go out to explore the city. And sometime after the lunch , you have previously prepared by yourself (let’s say spaghetti with tuna sauce if you’re weird like Rodrigo), you should register yourself for the first free thing on this list: BLACKROLL® Sessions.

BLACKROLL Gothenburg

The sessions are an excellent and relaxing workout that is great for your legs. You can register is by sending an email to Rebeka at [email protected] as soon as you finish washing up the dishes since the workout starts at 16:30.

The black roll sessions take place at The Centre of Health and Performance at Skånegatan 14b (the nearest tram stop is Ullevi Norra – see a map below). The only thing you need is some sports clothes….Rebeka will guide you through the rest!

Gothenburg Free Activity #2: Tuesday Running Group Workout OR Jazz Night

Still no sun. But this time, you got up really fast even without any coffee since you did BLACKROLL® yesterday. Already feeling better and ready for some more action?

For those of you who answered “YES,” check these guys out . Gothenburg Running Club is a group of young enthusiasts that organize free running workouts in different places around the city. They meet up every Tuesday at 6 PM and it’s always free to join. You can find where they are meeting in the “events” section of their Facebook page here .

Joining the group is a great way to explore the hidden parks that you didn’t know Gothenburg had and to learn some new Swedish words (hint: the more squats you do, the more Swedish numbers you learn….I did “ sju ” which totally means 100).

Gothenburg Running Club Skansen Kronan

Skansen Kronan running

But if BLACKROLL® was tough enough for you yesterday, then you should definitely visit Nefertiti Jazz Club instead. They are always free on Tuesdays and offer live jazz jam sessions that are really enjoyable. The place opens at 7 pm and the music starts around an hour later (but if you want a nice spot in front of the stage, then you should be there around 7 PM to get it since a lot of people come).

Gothenburg Free Activity #3: Wednesday Public Sauna

This morning will probably be snowing. But don’t be sad! This is the best weather that you can imagine while experiencing the free public sauna at Jubileumsparken.

This amazing piece of architecture was created mostly from mostly from recycled materials by German architect-collective Raumlabor. And it’s in the middle of the water! If you didn’t figure it out already, this is where you use your towel.

You can book here . Unfortunately, the booking system is only in Swedish so you’ll have to translate everything. There are basically three options to book: male-only sauna, female-only sauna, and mixed. The maximum amount of people that you can register at once is 2 so you can bring a friend along.

Jubileumsparken Sauna

I know it doesn’t look like a sauna or a nice place to visit….but I promise, it is! Picture credits to https://goteborg.se/wps/portal/enhetssida/jubileumsparken

Gothenburg Free Activity #4: Thursday Museum Day

As mentioned in the beginning, if you’re under 25, the doors of any museum in Gothenburg are open and for free for you.

We personally liked the Gothenburg Museum of Art best since it had a wide variety of art to see from Renaissance to the present, including works from artists such as Rembrandt, Picasso, Henry Moore and Louise Nevelson.

Gothenburg Museum of Art

Picture credits to Gothenburg Museum of Art

If this is too “nerdy” (it’s not, btw), try the Volvo or Maritime Museum for a glimpse of Swedish industrial power, or head to Gothenburg’s Natural History Museum for a face-to-face encounter with something more dangerous than a Scandinavian moose (although those moose are still huge and impressive ).

Natural History Museum Gothenburg

Gothenburg (Almost) Free Activity #5: Friday “Don’t-Bring-Your-Credit-Card” OR “Get-Free-Food” Night Out

Although it’s not on us to claim, we’d say that Friday is a Swedish Saturday….which means that it’s time for a night out!

And this is where “almost” in the parenthesis from the title comes in. To be honest, alcohol in Sweden is really expensive (this is only false if you’re from Norway where it’s even more expensive). And one way to make sure you spend nothing on alcohol is to bring only cash when you go out.

It may sound strange, but many places in Gothenburg only accept cards — no cash. So, if you really want to make your night free….leave your credit card and debit card at home!

But if you do bring your card along with you for drinks, and you may as well get some free food out of the deal. Just head to Kings Head Pub on the famous going-out street of Andra Långgatan and you can enjoy an extra (and “free”) buffet with the purchase of a drink (one beer is about 35 Swedish Kronor).

Gothenburg Free Activity #6: Saturday Flea Market

If you stick to the plan and stay on budget by restraining yourself to not get “just one more” (okay, “two more”) beer on the previous night, you’ll be able to get up early and head to the free market called Kviberg (the name of the tram stop is the same — here’s where it is on the map ).

Not only you will find extremely cheap fruits and vegetables (again, not applicable to Norwegians)….. but you’ll be able to experience a completely different vibe of Sweden with many people coming from other cultures and bringing their own food, spices, languages, and clothes . And you’re looking for something that you consider really difficult to find here in Sweden, chances are pretty good you’ll find it here for a very good (and negotiable price)!

Gothenburg Free Activity #7: Sunday Chill Out

Make your favorite pasta again and watch a movie. It’s Sunday after all.

(Or if you’re feeling really motivated – hit up some of Gothenburg’s parks! There’s Gothenburg’s main park with a small free zoo Slottsskogen , the year-round beautiful botanical gardens , or the lake-filled Delsjöområdet nature reserve )

If you’re considering planning a 1, 2 or 3 days in Gothenburg itinerary you’re really going to be spoilt for choice when it comes to incredible things to do in this lively city.

While Sweden’s capital city of Stockholm is the heart and core of Swedish culture and government, Sweden’s second-largest city is one of the top locations to visit in the country.

Home to Volvo, beautifully designed Dutch canals, and one of the most thriving art and culture destinations in Scandinavia, Gothenburg is a city that can’t be missed.

Gothenburg has about half the population of Stockholm with the addition of stunning elegance and pools of green throughout the city.

Sweden’s second-largest city is the perfect spot to experience Swedish style and culture without just being another tourist of the masses.

How Many Days in Gothenburg?

One of the crucial planning points of your trip will be to decide how long to stay in Gothenburg. While it’s usually easier to decide how long to stay in capital cities, smaller cities can be trickier to figure out.

Gothenburg is ⅓ the size of Stockholm and although there is plenty to do, an ideal trip would be a long weekend in the city.

With one day in Gothenburg, you’ll be able to see the main sights, eat a good meal, and wander around the city.

If you spend 2 days in Gothenburg, you’ll be able to go at a much slower pace, taking in the city while doing all the same things within 1 day but in less of a rush.

With 3 days in this Scandinavian city, you’ll be able to explore the city at your own pace, taking in the sights and tastes as well as managing to take a short day trip to the neighboring, breezy seaside, Gothenburg Archipelago.

Getting To & Around Gothenburg

You’ll likely be arriving in Gothenburg either by plane or by train.

If you’re visiting from another part of Sweden, the best way will be to take a train to get to Gothenburg’s Central Station. Sweden has a wonderful transportation system and you’ll be able to get a high-speed train from most of Sweden at usually an affordable cost.

You can reach Gothenburg by train from Stockholm, Copenhagen , or Malmo in around 3 hours, making it a central point of any Sweden itinerary . You can view schedules here.

Gothenburg has its own airport (Landvetter International Airport) located 25 km from the city center and serves routes throughout the rest of Scandinavia as well as the rest of Europe.

Unfortunately, there isn’t any direct public transportation from Gothenburg Airport to the city center, but there are multiple coach bus services offering transportation.

The travel time is around 20 minutes from the airport to the city and can be purchased in advance online or on the bus depending on the company. FlixBus is my favourite, as they have frequent services, low costs, and pretty comfortable seats on the bus. If you have the budget, it is also possible to book a private transfer.

If where you’re visiting Gothenburg from doesn’t offer direct flights to the city’s airport, the second-best option would be to fly into Stockholm or Copenhagen and then take a train to Gothenburg. Stockholm and Copenhagen airports are both bigger, lending more opportunities for flights from varying departure countries.

Just like the rest of Sweden, the city of Gothenburg has wonderfully efficient and sustainable urban transportation options. The main transportation system in Gothenburg consists of bus, a large tram network, and boat services which are all included in the same transportation ticket.

A single ticket costs around 35 SEK for 90 minutes for one zone covering any included transport that you need from your departure area to your final destination.

If you need to travel throughout different zones in the city, you’ll need to purchase a multiple-zone ticket (or two one-zone tickets) which lasts for 180 minutes and costs double the price of a 90-minute ticket.

It’s also possible to purchase day-pass tickets (1-3 days) giving unlimited public transport for the number of zones included in your pass.

To give you a better understanding of the zones, there are 3 zones in the city of Gothenburg, A, B, and C. While zone A is the direct center of the city, it’s quite a small area so if you plan on exploring the city without restrictions, make sure you at least get a ticket for zones A and B if you plan on purchasing a pass. Otherwise, purchase tickets as you go along according to your destination.

Despite the orderly transportation system of Gothenburg, the city itself is quite small making it an incredibly walkable city. For example, a walk between the Skansen Kronan Castle and the Gothenburg Museum of Natural History takes just around 18 minutes and this goes for most locations within the main city center.

However, you may want to use public transportation if you want to visit somewhere like the Liseberg Amusement Park or the expansive Gothenburg Botanical Garden (Trädgårdsföreningen), both of which are a little bit further out.

1, 2 or 3-Day Gothenburg Itinerary

It’s pretty easy to say that Gothenburg is one of the “coolest” and on-trend cities in Europe. While the city began as a Dutch trading colony in 1621, today it’s the sustainability capital of Scandinavia, the home to Volvo cars, friendly locals, and a world-renowned food scene.

It’s also one of the most enjoyable cities in Sweden to wander around on a long weekend and enjoy the idyllic architecture & Swedish minimalism, fika culture, nature, and canals making up Sweden’s second-largest city.

If you plan on visiting many of the attractions listed in this article, then consider purchasing a Gothenburg Go City Pass to save on entry costs!

Day 1 – Gothenburg’s Central Highlights

Gothenburg main center .

The prime location to begin any Gothenburg itinerary is in Gothenburg’s classic old town. Begin at the sprawling Gustaf Adolfs (King Gustaf Adolf founded the city in 1621) Torg , formerly Stora Torget. This is Gothenburg’s main square where you’ll find the city’s Town Halls, both old and new.

After wandering around in Gothenburg’s largest square, continue into the Western North Town (Vastra Nordstaden) , and further take in the historical buildings such as the Stock Exchange, and Crown Hall (Kronhuset, Gothenburg’s oldest building dating back to 1643 in Dutch architecture).

If you want to learn more about the history, you can book a walking tour here.

Domkyrkan (Gothenburg Cathedral)

After first getting acquainted with Gothenburg in the precise and historically rich center of the city, I suggest heading to Domkyrkan (Gothenburg’s Cathedral) which is about a 6-minute walk.

Gothenburg’s Cathedral was first built in the early 19th century by architect Carl Willhelm Carlberg after an earlier cathedral built in the 17th century had perished. The interior of the cathedral is a unique mix of styles, from classical and empirical style to traditional baroque.

This gorgeous cathedral is an integral part of the city of Gothenburg and is a beneficial addition to any trip to Gothenburg.

Gothenburg Cathedral

Wander Around Magasinsgatan

A short walk (around 5 minutes) away from the Gothenburg Cathedral will bring you to Magasinsgatan (Warehouse Street) .

This area is a great spot to explore Gothenburg off the beaten path and is the perfect example of how historic working-class areas in many cities today are prime spots for hip culture, shopping, and food scenes.

Here you’ll find many unique and local brands filling the streets, as well as a laid-back, expressive, and alternative atmosphere. Just wandering the area is an adventure in itself, taking in the architecture and street art, food trucks, and everything in between.

Dinner at Feskekorka (Fish Church) or Saluhallen Food Hall

At this point of your first day, you’ll likely have built up an appetite and be ready to enjoy a meal in Gothenburg’s renowned food scene.

My recommendations to have the best local experience with Gothenburg’s best and most well-loved foods are to either head to the Fish Church or the Saluhallen Food Hall.

Due to the city’s prime location by the sea, you’ll find outstanding seafood in Gothenburg and the surrounding areas. Built in 1874, Feskekorka (Fish Church) is the local fish market in Gothenburg and is a Gothenburg staple.

The building itself resembles a church and because of this, it took on its name and is one of the most recognisable buildings in Gothenburg. While the main part of the building is a fish market, there are a few delectable restaurants inside serving up some of the tastiest seafood in all of Gothenburg.

If you’re not into seafood, another option is to head to the Saluhallen Food Hall , about 5 minutes away in the other direction. The Saluhallen Food Hall is located in an iconic 1800s building and here you’ll be able to find all sorts of dishes and cuisines, including traditional Swedish delicacies.

Feskekorka

Day 2 –  A Deeper Dive into the City’s Culture

Breakfast in the haga neighborhood.

To begin the second day of your visit to Gothenburg, I suggest heading to Haga , one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, to have a Swedish breakfast and a leisurely wander.

This area is lined with homes in traditional brick Gothenburg style, cosy cafes/coffee houses, unique shops of every type, and restaurants aplenty.

At Christmastime, you’ll find a festive Christmas Market and in the spring/autumn, you’ll have the opportunity to browse the local farmer’s market. My suggestion is to head to Latteria to enjoy a tasty breakfast before continuing your day.

Skansen Kronan Castle

Located on the perimeter of the Haga neighborhood is one of the most important landmarks in Gothenburg, the Skansen Kronan Castle.

Completed in 1700, the imposing fortress was built in preparation for battle but in all of the time of its existence, it was never actually used for that purpose as it was never attacked by enemies.

It’s been used in varying ways throughout history and today is used as a banquet hall, wedding venue, and party venue. This classic fortification offers wonderful views of the city and is definitely on of the top things to do in Gothenburg. You also can get an incredible view of Gothenburg from the castle, as well.

The outdoor part of the castle not used for venues is open 24 hours a day and is free for visitors unless. If you want to see inside, you’ll have to arrange a tour in advance with the Skansen Kronan group.

Skansen Kronan

Gothenburg Museum of Art or Volvo Museum

A solid way to round up your second day (if you’re planning 3-day itinerary, the last day will be spent outside of the city), is to head to one of the city’s varying museums. My suggestions are either the Gothenburg Museum of Art or the Volvo Museum.

The Gothenburg Museum of Art is located in the central Lorensberg neighborhood and is known to be one of the best collections of art in all of Sweden and Scandinavia. With international collections dating back to the 15th century and unique exhibitions, I think the Gothenburg Museum of Art is one of the best museums to visit in the city.

Tickets for a single entry are around 65 SEK and are free for students and those under 20 years. Opening hours vary depending on the day and time of year, so check in advance to plan your day.

One of Gothenburg’s biggest names and sources of fame is easily the home to Volvo cars. For car aficionados or those interested in a unique and integral part of Gothenburg, a visit to the Volvo Museum is a great option.

Here you’ll take a trip throughout the history of the Volvo name beginning in 1927, its cars and what makes the company how we know it today. Entry tickets are around 160 SEK with concession tickets available.

Again, the hours of the museum vary depending on the day and time of year so check the website to plan accordingly.

Day 3 – Gothenburg Archipelago

Gothenburg is located in a perfect location for both city-dwellers and nature lovers alike. While even in the city center you won’t find yourself far from green areas, the Gothenburg Archipelago lines the waters of Gothenburg and southwest Sweden.

The archipelago consists of 20 islands and is split into two groups; the Northern Archipelago and the Southern Archipelago. Both are incredibly beautiful and worth the visit but with just one day, I suggest heading to the Southern Archipelago.

The Southern Archipelago is closer and more accessible with public transport, whereas the Northern Archipelago is a bit more of a complicated journey. The islands are completely car-free and have such a relaxed and happy atmosphere that’ll make you want to spend more time on the islands.

You can easily reach the Southern Archipelago in around 30 minutes on public transportation and there are quite a few options when deciding which island to visit on your day trip.

Styrso is the main hub island of the southern islands and is a great contender for which island to visit. You’ll find cafes, restaurants, and quiet spots to swim while enjoying the warming Swedish sun.

Another option if you’re looking to be fully immersed in nature, is to visit Vargo. Vargo island is the furthest west island of the Southern Archipelago and is pure nature and peace. There are no restaurants or stores as Vargo is a nature reserve, so bring a blanket and picnic to feel the fresh sea breeze, take in the wildlife, and go for a swim.

Southern Gothenburg Archipelago

Where to Stay in Gothenburg

Hotel Royal – Mid-range visitors to Gothenburg will love this centrally-located hotel. They have lovely, clean and comfortable rooms to choose from and even offer a great breakfast to start your day each morning.

Hotel Pigalle – For those who’d like a luxury option in Sweden’s second city, this hotel is a great choice. There are a myriad of elegant rooms to choose from and countless great amenities to ensure your stay in Gothenburg is a fantastic one.

Slottskogens Hostel – If you’re traveling solo or on a budget, then this hostel offers both dorms and private rooms along with good self-catering facilities and common areas.

Gothenburg isn’t the most popular destination in Sweden, but it’s easily one of the most dynamic. There’s something for everyone; whether you’re keen on history, culture, food, nature, or modern architecture.

After spending some time in Gothenburg, you’ll have a newfound appreciation for Sweden’s second-biggest city and will likely be waiting for another trip to explore the region further.

Getting around the city

Public transport.

Västtrafik operates trams, buses, boats and commuter trains in Gothenburg and western Sweden. The same ticket or travel card is valid on all modes of transport. You can easily pay with your bank card in zone A: Gothenburg, Mölndal, Partille and Öckerö. Simply tap your card (Visa or Mastercard) on the on-board card readers to buy an adult ticket with a 90-minute connection period. If you tap again after 90 minutes, a new purchase will be made. You can only buy one ticket per bank card. You can buy all different kinds of tickets, such as 24- or 72-hour cards, at Västtrafik’s points of sale or via the Västtrafik ToGo app. vasttrafik.se

Airport shuttle

Between Göteborg Landvetter Airport and Nils Ericsonterminalen via Korsvägen, Berzeliigatan and Kungsportsplatsen. Tickets can be bought online, at Västtrafik sales outlets or on board the shuttle bus. Note, payment by credit card only, not cash. flygbussarna.se

Congestion tax

Gothenburg imposes a congestion tax on vehicles registered in Sweden and abroad. The congestion tax applies when you drive in/out or through Gothenburg from Monday to Friday between 06:00 and 18:29. Exceptions apply on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, the day before a public holiday and July, when no congestion charge is applied. Congestion charges are applied automatically. An invoice will be sent to your home address. transportstyrelsen.se

Accessibility

Having a disability can involve many challenges, but the City of Gothenburg is constantly working to minimise limitations. One stated goal is for the city to be accessible to everyone, no matter what their difficulties might be. At t-d.se you can find accessibility information from various organisations in Gothenburg.

Public transport stops have arrival signs with accessibility icons. The newer trams generally have a lowered section at the centre of the carriage that makes it easy to get on board. All city buses and boats have ramps and gangways, as well as staff who can help. Airport buses are an exception, as they are not fitted with ramps or lifting equipment, and often have several steps.

The public attractions in Gothenburg should be accessible to all and easy to visit. The attractions’ own websites usually provide more detailed information on accessibility. The Got Event Tillgänglighet app has been developed to make the City of Gothenburg’s event venues more accessible for those who need visual interpretation, sign language interpretation or a hearing loop.

There is a good range of accessible bathing spots with ramps and disabled toilets in Gothenburg. However, it is worth being aware that the Gothenburg archipelago consists mainly of rocks. Most playgrounds in Gothenburg are also accessible, and are rubberised to make it easier to access the play equipment.

There are public toilets throughout Gothenburg, many of which are wheelchair accessible. Some cost SEK 5 to use, which you pay by card. You can find a map of where toilets are located at goteborg.se. Here, you can also find more general information about accessibility in Gothenburg.

For more information, come to the accessible Gothenburg Visitor Centre.

The island Vinga.

Gothenburg archipelago

Take a deep breath of fresh sea air. The coast and islands around Gothenburg are a unique setting where the craggy shore meets leafy nature. You will find cosy fishing communities and fantastic gourmet experiences here.

Explore the archipelago

The islands dotted along the coast are close enough to visit for the day and have a totally different tempo to the city. There are accommodation and restaurants on several of the islands, some of which are open all year round. However, we recommended that you check opening times in advance, especially in winter!

The southern islands are car-free, and you can easily reach them by boat from Saltholmen ferry terminal, and at certain times from Stenpiren in the city centre. You can reach Saltholmen by bicycle, bus or tram 11 from central Gothenburg. The same ticket is valid for buses, trams and boats. You can easily pay with your bank card on board. Simply tap your card (Visa or Mastercard) on the card readers to buy an adult ticket with a 90-minute connection period. If you tap again after 90 minutes, a new purchase will be made. You can only buy one ticket per bank card.

You can buy all different kinds of tickets, such as 24- or 72-hour cards, at Västtrafik’s retailers or via the Västtrafik ToGo app. vasttrafik.se

The northern islands can be reached by car, bus or bicycle via Route 155 heading towards Hisingen/ Öckerö to the Lilla Varholmen ferry port. Two ferries leave from Lilla Varholmen, heading to Hönö/Öckerö and Björkö. Both are free. During the summer, a ferry also goes direct from Stenpiren and Eriksberg in central Gothenburg to Hönö Klåva. For information and tickets, visit styrsobolaget.se

The ferry Kungsö.

Things to do

Gothenburg’s archipelago offers almost endless possibilities for swimming – whichever island you find yourself on, you’re never far from rocks, beaches and bays.

In the southern part of the archipelago, you’ll find gems such as Vrångö’s child-friendly shallow sandy beach, Utterviksbadet with its own little islet on Styrsö, and the spacious Ramsdalsbadet on Brännö.

There are 13 municipal bathing spots on the northern islands. These include the Hästen bathing area within walking distance of Hönö Klåva, and the popular Hjälvik bathing area with its volleyball court and ramp on Öckerö. There are bathing areas with diving towers on both Björkö and Knippla.

You can combine a sauna with sea bathing on several islands, including on Långholmen near Hönö Klåva, and on Öckerö, Fotö and Knippla. Havskatten on Hönö has a spa area with a sauna and a whirlpool. In the far south, Kajkanten on Vrångö has a relaxation raft with a wood-fired sauna and hot tub.

Paddling a kayak or canoe is the perfect way to experience the Gothenburg archipelago, which can offer everything from relaxed and tranquil paddling on a calm day, to more challenging days when the frost gnaws at your cheeks. You can easily pull in to a beach or onto the rocky shore for a coffee break. Hire/guided tours: donsohavskajak.se | escapeoutdoors.se | kajkantenvrango.se | pipeisland.se

The Gothenburg Archipelago Route combines spectacular views with slightly more strenuous walking, running for 27 km along the coast, across Hönö, Fotö, Öckerö and Hälsö. Along the trail, there are sights, bathing spots, places to eat and accommodation. Bus stops along the entire route make for easy access.

Ersdalen Nature Reserve on western Hönö is popular with those who enjoy bouldering. Many of the rocks are in a specular position right next to the water, for an extraordinary thrill. But you don’t need to be a climbing expert to come here – the area is an experience in itself!

Walking through the paths, boulder fields and open landscapes of the Rörö Nature Reserve is a powerful natural experience. Here, you can see grazing sheep and horses. There is a café and a grocery store near the ferry quay, where you can buy your own lunch to take with you.

Björkö offers untouched nature with open landscape, grazing animals and flowering meadows. The island is largely uninhabited, and there are many areas for walking. visitockero.se

Much of Vrångö is a nature reserve, and there are excellent walks. Tärnstigen is a shorter stretch that is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Bird watchers and nature-lovers flock here for the varied flora and fauna.

From the highest point on Brännö , at the old pilot’s look-out on the hill, you can take in views of Vinga and the approach to Gothenburg. From Brännö, you can walk across to the beautiful nature reserve on Galterö via a narrow land bridge. Here, you will find a wealth of birdlife and nature. Visitors like to paddle across from Brännö, and you can easily bring your kayak up onto the beaches at Galterö’s bays.

You can also enjoy stunning views of the entire archipelago from Styrsö’s highest point, Stora Rös. From here, you can walk along nature trails to Brännholmsviken Bay and the islet of Styrsö Skäret. There is a bridge across to Donsö , so you can walk or cycle between the two islands. Donsö has several trails with spectacular views and picnic spots. You’ll find beautiful nature at the far north and south points of the island.

Beer pubs and local breweries

Gothenburg is known as Sweden’s beer capital, thanks to the city’s many craft breweries. There are around 40 breweries in Gothenburg and the surrounding region, many of which also have restaurants, brewery pubs and tap rooms where you can sample the local, freshly brewed beers.

Dugges is one of Gothenburg’s best-known breweries. Today, Dugges is located in Landvetter, east of Gothenburg, but there is also a Dugges Pils beer pub on Plantagegatan in Linnéstaden.

The former industrial district on Ringön is now home to a growing number of exciting businesses. One of these is Vega Bryggeri , which brews beer according to old traditions. The brewery also has a restaurant serving all kinds of smoked food and a wide range of beers on tap.

Alongside its tap room and restaurant in Jonsered’s historic industrial environment, Poppels also has a bar and restaurant in the same building as Scandic Central, Citybryggeri, featuring a sustainable and mainly vegetarian menu.

Majornas Bryggeri is a small-scale craft brewery on the square Chapmans torg. Here, you can sample craft beer from their own and other local breweries, along with delicious vegetarian dishes.

Göteborgs Nya Brygger i is located in Pripps’ former premises. Right next door is the Gothenburg Brewery Museum, with an exhibition on the city’s beer history featuring many historical artifacts.

Hönöbryggeriet is a craft brewery in Gothenburg’s northern archipelago. Both the beer and its design reflect the spirit of the archipelago: sun and sea.

Live music in Gothenburg

Jazz, pop, punk or blues? Gothenburg’s live music scene has something for everyone. In the city centre you’ll find John Scott’s Palace (Södra Hamngatan 2) and the Irish Embassy Downtown (Östra Hamngatan 50B), where the focus is often on rock. If you prefer jazz, head for Unity Jazz (Kyrkogatan 13) or Café Kronhuset (Postgatan 6–8) where you can sometimes experience a jazzier vibe. Enjoy great blues evenings at the quayside on the S/S Marieholm or at Gullbergssvass on the pub boat M/S Götapetter , where you can listen to original blues, country, rock, punk and alternative metal.

Långgatorna and Majorna are home to a wide range of pubs and restaurants. At Holy Moly (Andra Långgatan 31) you can listen to jazz, blues and folk music, with similar sounds on offer across the street at 2Lång. There’s live music on Fridays and Saturdays at Byns Bistro (Tredje Långgatan 13). At the top of Stigberget is the Nordic region’s largest record store, Bengans . As well as buying records and attending signings, you can also check out the latest bands and artists. Hängmattan Kök & Bar (Karl Johansgatan 16) hosts concerts by smaller live acts a couple of times a week. Crippas Café (Kusttorget 1) features DJs and live bands every Wednesday and Saturday. Potatisen (Värmlandsgatan 15) is a new venue with all kinds of entertainment. In the Klippan area is Porter Pelle , where you can listen to everything from pop to rock at the water’s edge.

Michigan's 1st Sheetz store opens in Romulus: Why people are excited

Portrait of JC Reindl

Michigan's first Sheetz store opened for business Tuesday near Detroit Metro Airport, attracting large crowds of customers who packed the new Romulus location and overfilled its parking lot.

Some of the first customers inside at 8 a.m. described themselves as devoted Sheetz fans who fell in love with the brand and its 24-hour stores — including around-the-clock kitchens and fuel pumps — while driving through the other six states where the family-owned and Altoona, Pennsylvania-based company has more than 740 locations.

President and CEO Travis Sheetz flew in for the grand opening and said he was impressed by the size of the turnout. Sheetz could ultimately open 50 to 60 locations in metro Detroit, he said, plus more in other parts of Michigan.

The Romulus store is on a former vacant lot at 33380 Wick Road, off of Interstate 94 and next to the newly built Romulus Trade Center.

More: Here are the features that make Sheetz stores so popular

"We felt like there was a void in the market for our type of offer, because it is unique with gas and food and everything else," Travis Sheetz said. "And we like that it’s a community-based area, because that’s how we are. We’re very attached to our community — we’ve been since the beginning — and we want to go to an area that resonates in that way.”

The first customer in line was Robert Pawlowski, 19, of Southgate, who said he was so excited for Sheetz's debut that he began waiting outside the store at 2:30 a.m. in his Chevrolet Sonic.

"I was unsure what it was going to look like crowd-wise," he explained, "and as you can see, it is a madhouse in here. I’ve been a Sheetz fan for as long as I can remember. Going down with my family to South Carolina each year in the summer, we would always stop at Sheetz."

He added, "They've got anything you want, from Mexican food to chicken sandwiches to breakfast at any point in time in the day."

Some of the most enthusiastic customers on Tuesday self-identified as "Sheetz Freakz."

That included Mickayla Selembo, 27, who said she grew fond of Sheetz stores while growing up in Pennsylvania. She moved three years ago to Holt, Michigan, just outside of Lansing, and made the hour-plus drive to Romulus on Tuesday morning to celebrate the company's arrival.

“I’m so glad that Michiganders can now enjoy Sheetz and hopefully love it as much as I do," Selembo said, "because it’s not overhyped and it’s more than a gas station.”

What makes Sheetz different

Here are some of the attractions to be found at Michigan's first Sheetz.

  • A made-to-order kitchen that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Customers can order on touch screens from a large menu featuring breakfast sandwiches, traditional sandwiches, pizza, burritos, "burgerz" and more. There also are tables to sit down and eat.
  • A 24/7 coffee house called SBC or Sheetz Brothers Coffee.
  • A drive-through for the Sheetz kitchen.
  • 12 vehicle gas pumps and four diesel truck gas pumps.
  • Slushy machines with multiple flavors including cherry, watermelon and "ultra raspberry."
  • A milkshake machine offering flavors such as Oreo, Snickers, Reese's Peanut Butter and mint chocolate chip.
  • A selection of pops, ice teas and energy drinks that is larger than the typical convenience store.
  • Pre-packaged salads, sandwiches, fruit cups and more for those in a rush to grab and go.
  • A basic foods aisle with staples such as loafed bread, pancake mix, Rice-A-Roni and boxed sugar.
  • An outdoor "Pet Potty Area."

Jamil Griffith, general manager of the new Romulus Sheetz, said the store will be staffed and open 24/7 every day of the year, including Christmas. Starting pay is $16 an hour, with those working overnight shifts earning $1 more per hour. Supervisor pay starts at $20 an hour. The store is expected to eventually have about 40 employees.

“We usually offer free coffee on Christmas — so please do come in on Christmas," he said.

More: First Sheetz store in Michigan set to open Tuesday with free coffee, pop, prizes

Sheetz is making preparations to open additional stores in several metro Detroit cities, including in Taylor, Warren, Macomb Township and Eastpointe.

Some proposed stores have encountered pushback at public meetings, often from neighbors who fear the traffic and commotion, and from owners of nearby existing businesses such as gas stations.

Travis Sheetz said Tuesday that this type of opposition isn't unusual in states like Michigan, where Sheetz is entirely new and many people may not yet be familiar with the stores and the brand.

“It’s par for the course," he said. "I started in real estate 30 years ago in the company and I would go to the meetings and people aren’t sure what you’re all about; they don’t know you."

"So that is what today’s about," he continued. "They are going to get to know us — and I think that will ease up."

5 scandinavian city breaks to consider this winter.

As so-called ‘coolcations’ became the summer trend for escaping the heat, the popularity of a Scandinavian break is set to continue into winter. The region’s major tourist destinations are poised for a tourism boom this winter, with travelers looking to enjoy the peak northern lights cycle and travel on new direct flight routes, among other factors.

Winter in Scandinavia unfolds in two phases. Early winter, around Christmas, features long, dark nights illuminated by festive lights. February and March usher in the "white winter," with snow-covered landscapes, longer days, and a burst of winter sports, festivals, and vibrant energy.

Whether you're chasing the aurora borealis, enjoying a Christmas market, or seeking a unique city break, here are five destinations to consider this winter in Scandinavia and the Nordics.

Tromsø, Norway
