History of Mumbai Film City

The history of India being introduced to Cinema dates back to the year 1896, when the very first feature film was screened at the Watson Hotel in Bombay (Mumbai was then known as Bombay). Although it wasn’t an Indian language film, it still managed the Indian creative minds to be fascinated and trigger intrigue and get into learning the craft of filmmaking.

The first full length motion film of Indian origin was produced by Dadasaheb Phalke, who is considered as the pioneer of Indian Cinema. He had produced the epic Raja Harishchandra, a silent feature film starring a cast of all male actors since females weren’t considered for acting jobs back then. The film was released in 1913.

Coming to the history of Film City Mumbai, the seed that was sown in 1913 after the release of Raja Harishchandra, kept on growing and prospering. It was during the year 1977 when visionaries of Indian Cinema like Late Shri V. Shantaram, Late Shri B. R. Chopra and the legendary actor Dilip Kumar came together and persuaded for the establishment of Maharashtra Film, Stage & Cultural Development Corporation Ltd., which was also called Filmcity.

This was done by the Department of Cultural Affairs Government of Maharashtra under the Company Act 1956, on 26th September 1977. It was given the name Film City and was later renamed as Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in 2001 to recognize the contribution of the founder of Indian Film Industry.

The Film City was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Yashwantrao Chavan.

Since then, Indian Film Industry has become the highest number of feature films producing entities followed by Nigerian Film Industry, followed by Hollywood. The numbers are as of 2013.

A Complete Guide To Goregaon Filmcity, Mumbai

baghban-house-at-goregaon-filmcity-mumbai

Mumbai, the birthplace of Bollywood attracts millions of people to the city in search of jobs or to solely meet their favourite celebrity. Bollywood influences our society greatly, from clothing trends to celebrations. We want everything to be in Bollywood style.

I’ve spent my childhood watching Govinda movies and grooving to KJo’s movie tracks. Therefore, I decided to visit the Film City during my Mumbai trip in October 2021 to relive my childhood and watch the film sets come alive.

Here’s a video of my tour that’ll give you a glimpse of the enormous Filmcity.

The Film City doesn’t allow walk-in visitors unless you know someone personally who works here. Therefore, the best way to explore this place is to book a tour with the “Mumbai Filmcity Tours” to make the most of your time. They have multiple options to choose from, the lowest starting from 650 INR per person.

Table of Contents

What and where is the Filmcity?

Dadasaheb Phalke Chitra Nagari a.k.a, the Filmcity, is named after the father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke. A studio complex comprising 16 enclosed and 42 outdoor sets for shooting films and serials, located in Goregaon near Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

Ticket and Timings

ticket-counter-mumbai-filmcity-tour

Mumbai Filmcity Tours offer three types of guided tours, a short two-hour tour around the Filmcity, a Bollywood city tour that will take you in and around the Filmcity, and a live show tour, where you” get to visit a live shooting set. You can check the timings and book your tickets here .

Tip:  Only limited seats are available for each slots daily. Therefore, I recommend to pre-book tickets online to avoid last minute availability issue.

My experience touring the Filmcity

mumbai-filmcity-tours-bus

I booked the two-hour group tour that took us around the Filmcity. A professional guide accompanied us and enthusiastically educated us about the sets, history and ongoing shoots. It was a very informative and entertaining tour that helped us understand the history and culture of the Filmcity. Even though we didn’t spot any celebrities, the anticipation of spotting one made it supremely exciting.

On our way, we stopped by a few outdoor sets and took a 15-minute halt at the cafeteria for refreshments(not complimentary) before heading back. Here’s what I saw at the Filmcity.

Other locations that we came across:

  • Bollywood’s favourite suicide point, where the protagonist is either killed (but somehow survives) or jumps voluntarily. This location was also used to shoot some of the most romantic songs in the 90s.
  • The famous forest from CID, where ACP Praduman finds most of his clues.
  • Daily soap sets like the Goenka villa of Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata ha and Gokuldham society from Tarak Mehta ka Ulta Chashma.
  • Other TV show sets like Big Boss, KBC and Comedy Nights with Kapil.

Film City, also known as Mumbai Film City or Bollywood, is a gated film production complex in the northern part of Mumbai, India. It is a shared lot, similar to Hollywood, where dozens of companies shoot films at the same time. While it is a popular sight, it can be a little tricky to get in. The security at Film City can be highly restrictive since a lot of films try to keep their productions under wraps. There are also a lot of disreputable touring companies that don’t actually have the clearance to get into Film City. Luckily, if you’re a little persistent and don’t mind spending a bit of money, you should be able to get in and view the film sets if they’re open to the public that day.

Visiting Mumbai

Step 1 Visit Mumbai in the winter or late fall to avoid monsoons and high heat.

  • In the winter, India tends to be less humid and it rains much less often. The average temperature is usually around 60–80 °F (16–27 °C) from December to February.
  • Summer in Mumbai is pretty rough unless you’re a big fan of high heat. Temperatures regularly exceed 100 °F (38 °C) in May, June, and July.

Warning: From June to September, India experiences monsoon season. Unless you love being wet, this is not the best time to visit if you don’t want to break out the parkas and umbrellas!

Step 2 Take a flight to Chhatrapati Shivaji airport to get to Mumbai quickly.

  • Mumbai is the fifth largest city in the world and the most densely-populated city on the planet. [3] X Research source It can take a long time to get around, so you really are better off flying directly into Mumbai to avoid traffic.

Step 3 Take a cruise that stops in Mumbai for a calmer, scenic option.

  • Many people hop a cruise from Sri Lanka or Singapore, which are other popular tourist destinations.
  • There are lots of cruises to Mumbai from Goa, which is located roughly 360 miles (580 km) south of Mumbai. This is a great option if you’re touring the entire country of India and want to see as much as possible.

Step 4 Hop a bus or train to Mumbai if you’re traveling from elsewhere in India.

  • Buses and trains in India are relatively cheap. Depending on how far you’re going and how you book the ticket, it will likely cost $2.50-10.00 to get to Mumbai.

Travelling to Film City

Step 1 Take a taxi or rideshare to the gates outside of the complex.

  • If you take a taxi and the car doesn’t have a meter on the dashboard, negotiate the price before the driver takes off. Some taxis will try to trick you into paying more than you should for the trip.
  • Uber is popular in Mumbai. You can also download the Ola app, which is an Indian rideshare company that offers bikes and cabs.
  • It will cost $2.00-10.00 to get a taxi or rideshare to take you to Film City depending on where you’re travelling from.

Tip: It’s usually pretty easy to get to the main gates of Film City. It’s at the end of Film City Road and there’s only one main gate. If you get lost in the area, look for signs or ask locals where the main gate is. There’s no address, but it shouldn’t be too hard to find the main gate. Every driver in India should know where it is though, since it’s popular among tourists and locals alike.

Step 2 Take the Western Line to the Goregaon stop and walk or catch a ride.

  • You can transfer to the Western Line from the Central line at Dadar.
  • The train costs $0.15 per ticket. You have to buy the ticket at the train station before entering and waiting for the train.
  • If you’re looking at a map, the Western Line is the vertical route on the left travelling from the southern coast to the northern suburbs. Goregaon is just south of the river on the northern half of the line.

Step 3 Grab a rickshaw from northern Mumbai if you want a unique experience.

  • Rickshaws usually turn down really long rides, so you have to hail one in northern Mumbai.
  • Rickshaws cost around $0.30-2.50 depending on how far you’re going.

Step 4 Hop a few city buses to get to Film City for cheap.

  • The bus line that used to take you directly to the gates of Film City (the C-71) is no longer in service.
  • Most bus stops in India are used by 5-10 different bus routes. Be sure to ask the driver or check the sign on the bus to make sure you’re getting on the right one!
  • The bus in Mumbai costs anywhere from $0.20-1.00 per ride. You can usually pay as you’re walking on to the bus, although you have to get a ticket for certain regional routes.
  • For a tourist, this is probably the most complicated way to get to Film City. It’s a fun way to get around if you’re down for an adventure, though!

Getting into the Complex

Step 1 Be willing to spend $50-100 per person to get in.

  • Film City doesn’t really get packed. It’s kind of tough to get in, so there aren’t a ton of people that visit on a given day.

Tip: There is no flat price and there are no tickets you can buy directly from Film City. Film City itself is just a collection of movie sets and offices, so the main gate is controlled by the security firm in charge of protecting the complex. Depending on their orders for a given day, security may restrict visitors, shut Film City down entirely, or open the sights up to the public. There’s no real way to know ahead of time.

Step 2 Ask the guards if it’s possible to book a tour in person.

  • Many people report that on slow days, guards will just simply let you walk inside if the studios aren’t actively in production and you pay for a security guard to accompany you.
  • The guards have been known to be more lenient with tourists that claim to love Bollywood films and have travelled from far away, so it may be worth mentioning which set you want to see or where you’re from while talking to security.

Step 3 Visit the tour booths in person outside of the gates to take a tour.

  • Look at reviews online before booking a ticket in person. There are a few disreputable companies there that will only drive you around the outside of the complex while making it seem like they have the clearance to get inside.
  • When taking a tour, you are not typically allowed to get off of the bus unless there aren’t any productions going on. It will still be cool to see the sights from the tour bus, though! [12] X Research source

Step 4 Book a tour ahead of time if you’re nervous about simply showing up.

  • This is usually more expensive than simply showing up at the gate.
  • The most reputable company for getting into Film City is Bollywood Tourism. They’re the only government-registered tour company that takes travelers to Film City. This means that you’ll almost always be able to get you inside if you book through them.

Step 5 Hang around outside and check out the sights nearby for free.

  • There are some unique statues and old sets that are scattered around the gates. Take 15-20 minutes to walk around and check the area out even if you can’t get in!

Expert Q&A

  • Ramoji Film City is a popular tourist attraction for film lovers and it is much easier to access than Mumbai’s Film City. It is located in Hyperbad, roughly 12 hours away by car or 2 hours away by flight. It’s definitely an easier sight to access if you’re a film buff, though! [15] X Research source Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
  • Do not attempt to bribe the guards at Film City to get inside. You may hear other people suggest doing this, but it’s illegal and highly dangerous. It’s not worth risking your freedom just to see some old movie sets. [16] X Research source Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
