Equitrek Super Sonic Horsebox who owns one?

Thanks for the reply! I read on another thread about the tachograoh and battery problems, what causes it to drain the battery and how have you solved the problem? Is the paintwork the standard colour or the 'pay extra colour' ? Ours would be kept undercover, do you think that would help, or is it just bad paint in general? My main question was about the living area really. Do you think it is worth paying extra for the seat or sink and hob to be fitted? And also would you say you could spend a night in it at a push? Albeit not a luxurious night! Sorry for all the questions!  

I am also looking at a Sonic! My view is with horseboxes that brand new ones will always look fab, you have to look at older ones to see how they age. I have seen two Equitrek Sonics close up this week, one was immaculate and the owner was chuffed to bits with it. The other, owner wasn't around, couldn't have been more than 5 years old but where the joint sealant had been painted over around the cab area, it had started to peel badly and looked really ropey. I don't know why one would look perfect and the other wouldn't. I am due to go and nosey at some more in the near future as there is a racetrack locally that has a lot of owners with Equitreks.

Not quite Super Sonic bus... ...I have owned a Sonic for nearly two years from new, and I just love it to bits. I have had no problems. My living area has the seat box for storage, which is really useful, and a mirror on the internal door. There are racks and hooks for two sets of tack. Reading this and other threads, I think there must be an element of 'horses for courses', if you get my drift. I am an amateur rider who goes out most weekends, but only locally. I do about 100 miles per month on average. I take one 14.2h usually, and occasionally two of that size (which with tack means I am just about on the payload limit.) Whatever I have on board, the Sonic has seemed well powered and easily cruises at 60mph (its legal limit) on dual carriageways. As I am not doing commercial horse transport, I have no tachograph and have had no battery issues. After two years, everything is intact and working, both Peugot van-wise and Equitrek conversion-wise. Both elements will be routinely serviced this summer for the first time, and I am not expecting issues If I had to sleep in my Sonic, space would dictate an air mattress or similar in the horse area. But as I have never done an overnight trip, that remains hypothetical.

Re living if you can afford it get it factory fitted before they put partitions in. Had this idea of getting a kitchen unit with sink, hob and fridge fitted into mine and can't get a fridge through the door!!! On the plus side I have the 2.2 engine with one 16.3hh horse and powers up hills and very ecconimical.  

The tachometers are still fitted though , they have to have them and they do run down the battery's if the lorry is not used daily this is got round by having an isolater on the battery personally I think it silly they are not fitted as standard an all horse lorrys as they are often not use regularly enough to stop this issue without one.

Oh damn, so it could effect the battery then if we didn't have the isolator fitted? Meant to add also Sportyspots what sort of company did you get to fit your kitchen unit as we would be interested in getting an outside company to fit ours if we decide to go with it! Was it a caravan company?

echo tachograph - had an isolator fitted, as it totally ruined battery.  

Any isolator is not allowed to interrupt the power supply to the tachograph! So it will still drain the battery if left for long periods!

I've had a Supersonic for over three years now and love it! Having had a 4 * trailer before and recognised the shoddy fitting out of the living in the past, we bought ours with an empty living and had a local bloke fit it to our spec. We have groom's and tack lockers so no problem with the wheel arches. It drives well, has no problem with payload and the horses love it. The only problem we have had was the gas struts on the ramp which we replaced last year and had no problem with Equitrek service, they supplied new ones very quickly and they are upgraded on the originals so should last longer. We usually travel one or two ponies, but I had a freind in need having broken down on the motorway a few months ago and we managed to fit a 16.2 and a 17hh in. They looked a bit snug but didn't complain and the pulling power was still fine.

Super service

Took my 2008 show trekka in for a service at Sheffield, I wasn’t sure what to expect but Steve who looked after me was brill, down to earth, sorted all my problems out in good time and for a very reasonable price. Fab little box!

After having a trailer for many years, we recently upgraded to a Sonic. I use it 3 or 4 times a week for lessons and pony club and I absolutely love it! It’s made my life so much easier and it’s easy to drive too, The ponies travel really well, I’ve had my big horse in and he loved it too. Thankyou to Dave for all your help and answering my many questions!!

Third World quality and Third world Customer care

Third World quality and Third world customer service. The basic laws of consumer rights have been ignored on the simple issue of a deposit refund. Sadly I will now have to take them to court. Please just go elsewhere. They will cause you a headache at some stage.

The Sheffield Equi-Trek team are brilliant!

I cannot thank the Sheffield Equi-Trek team enough for their help and support! We were involved in an incident during our way home from collecting our trailer from its service, where the trailer ended up on it's side blocking two lanes of traffic. Whilst my partner was on the phone to the police, I rang Equi-Trek and told them what had happened. They instantly rallied a large group of staff and quickly came to our rescue. They righted the trailer and loaded it up on their truck so quickly. The reassurance given to us was amazing, followed by phone calls from Steve to check that we had managed to get home safely. The team were amazing and I honestly don't know what we would've done if it weren't for their knowledge and help!

great team at Equitrek

I recently bought a 2014 second hand Equitrek sonic excel - delivered to Ireland. The ease of ordering and collecting it was amazing. It arrived safely and on time. The inside of the truck is like new - as though the entire thing had been upgraded. The set up is excellent - there is a separate section for all of the gear and tack and then lots of space for two ponies. The extras are very helpful also - camera, LED lighting etc I am very happy with this purchase - the team are excellent to work with. Thanks all @ Equitrek

Would most definitely avoid at all…

Would most definitely avoid at all costs! Bought a brand new Star Treka Elite in July. Within 1 week of collecting it the paint was peeling and the front lights were hanging off. It was taken away and after 3 weeks of being at Equitrek Sheffield I was told it was sorted. Collected it brought it home same day to find the loading light not working and the red led travel light not installed. The paint was again peeling. Was taken away again and after another 3 weeks of being away I’m still waiting to hear if the paint issue is sorted. It’s impossible to get a reply to an email without constantly chasing it up. They claim that every other department is to blame for the faults. They truly do not care once they have their money. We waited 9 months for the trailer to be built and it’s never had a horse in it.

We bought an Equitrek Sonic in 2009 new…now 16,000 miles and 9.5 years later it is almost unusable except for short runs.

We bought an Equitrek Sonic in 2009 new from Ralph Bailey who were excelent, the box is great and a great designe. I think if you were able to replace it every few years there would be no problems. Our issue is the De lamenating of the panels because of poor workmanship in the fitting of the side windows and water ingress into the laminate of the panels. The first issue was just the side door lifting/ supporting struts which would not hold the very heavy weight of the side door, a call to equitrek and a ££££ later they were sorted. But no such luck with the call about the panel delamination which we sent several pictures to there service manager who said( sorry only 12m warranty) and at this point the box was well out of that 12m period.!! A good friend of mine manafactures box body’s for Dog grooming and food delivery vehicles buy the way and offers 10 year body warranty. Not Equitrek as they obviously know about there build problems. There was no offer of any help/good will to rectify there problems, now the vehicle at 16,000 miles and 2009 is almost useless !

Do Not Trust This Company

I entered into a year long rental contract with them for an Equi trek lorry. I was told it had breakdown cover. Sure enough, it breaks down, luckily for me at the yard. When I called the number given to me in the event of breakdown I was told the vehicle had no cover what so ever. After what I can only describe as a heated discussion with Equi they begrudgingly agreed to send out a breakdown firm. Needless to say I told them to take their lorry back. Taking umbridge at this they tried to charge me for the breakdown alleging it was my fault. The matter is now in the hands of the court and trading standards.... I also found out they had failed to tax the vehicle for part of the time I had it out on rental. Be careful with this unprofessional company.

Trail-Treka - Excellent Side-Loading Trailer

Customer service and support from Equitrek

Tom Janion, Managing Director was very helpful, with excellent communication - answering my many questions. He helped me when he was not legally obliged to, in quite a stressful difficult situation. I had bought an Equitrek from a customer who misled me as it had been damaged in accident. The Equitrek team especially Steve is very knowledgeable, he ins-tills confidence and has fantastic customer service mentality. He was very thoughtful and spent a lot of time coaching me around how to use the vehicle and common mistakes a customer can make to inadvertently damage the vehicle. To be fair they were all lovely people including the cleaner who was very jolly, was so happy to be back at work following being furloughed. You could see they all enjoyed working at Equitrek.

equitrek trail trekka trailer…

I have an equitrek trail trekka trailer that I bought from new. The build quality is poor, rivets shaking loose around the front nose cone and the roof panel. This has resulted in the roof cracking where it began to lift off before I noticed that the rivets had just fallen out- obviously at roof height they were not easy to notice. Lots of screw covers have just dropped off too leaving dirty rust stains on the outside. Disappointing quality when you have paid a quality price. When I contacted customer service previously they weren't very helpful but now the roof has cracked I am trying again!

NIGHTMARE - DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE WE DID

Court Action needed to resolve issue

I bought a brand new equitrek sonic and within months the ramp filled up with water. We reported this and to cut a VERY long story short we had a year of awful customer service and heated phone calls with the company who refused to replace the ramp even though we were well within the warranty, we had no choice but to take them to court. Strangely the night before we were due in court they agreed to replace the ramp! Do not touch this company with a barge pole they couldn't care less once they have your money and unless you are willing to take them to court they will not sort out any issues.

Leaking Night Treka

Bought a brand new Night Treka, which developed a leak into living space. This was detected 5 weeks after purchase so more than likely a fault from the start. First repair failed and second repair failed and on inspection 2nd repair was appauling quality (sealant slapped on with no attempt to ensure good finish). Many other problems on top of this incl: unfinished joints, cracked vent frames, electrical hook up falling out during transit and grooms door flying open also during transit etc. Equitrek and distributor tried to justify workmanship as being appropriate and tried to give excuses for leaks. In my opinion they are poorly designed and constructed with cheap materials. Wont be buying another....

Organised a part exchange of my old Equitrek with Tom and Dave at EQT Sheffield. From start to finish these guys have offered the most amazing service …… Whilst I deliberated over my new trailer, Tom was patient - yet very informative. Dave then kept me up to date with the progress of my new trailer - sending me regular updates and organising delivery to the NE of Scotland. The collection and delivery was a seem-less exercise, also thanks to the delivery guy whose name I didn’t get. Couldn’t have asked for the process to be made any easier. Fantastic Customer service. Great Service

I'm on my second Equi-Trek horsebox, first a Victory 5 and now a Valiant. Both very well designed and very well built. This 5-star review is primarily for their customer service - I needed proof of MOT category and type approval after my local testing centre refused to accept the Valiant for a Class 4 test. I had everything I needed from Tom and Jodie within a few hours. Excellent service, thank you!

BRILLIANT customer service

Just picked up my first horse box today. It far surpassed my hopes and I’m thrilled with it! I dealt with the brilliant Jodie all the way through then Steve for hand over, I can honestly say the customer experience was amazing - Jodie was on every little thing, found me the perfect box, got back to me immediately every time I called, went above and beyond even giving me advice on how to insure etc - customer experience as it should be (but never really is!!) can’t recommend them enough

Following on from my review dated 5th May 2023

Following on from my review at the beginning of May and updated again on the 5th of May. I have the trailer in for repair following the rear axial becoming detached. The company doing the repair can not believe how Equi Trek have gotten away with such shoddy build quality. The bolts on the front axial have been checked and because they also go through part of the "A" frame they are good. The rear axial however is a different story. Apart from the bolt heads there is no upper support for this axial, there should be some form of frame to spread the load under the bolt heads as well as washers. I am hoping that this review will allow me to attach photo's of the damage. I can not stress enough that anyone who has this type of trailer has it checked as a matter of urgency. My name and contact details have been passed to Trustpilot but other than the comment from Equi Trek, I have heard nothing.

Absolutely abysmal service

Update: Following contact with Equi-Trek new service manager who has so far been helpful. He agreed to look into my issue. After investigation he called back (excellent service) and agreed there is a problem. Hopefully, this service level will continue to resolution, and I can update my review accordingly. Absolutely terrible customer service once you've paid your money. Never call back, no one ever available, not interested in issues even when trailer under warranty. Very poor and disappointing. Would never recommend purchasing an Equitrek especially from main Sheffield office.

Equitrek - poor quality

Purchased a new Super Sonic March 2018. Build quality not great, nor was the dealer to be honest. Eighteen months in and the paint is peeling off all over the box - raised with Equitrek, they are not interested. Recommend you go elsewhere

We have just bought a used KM Horsebox…

We have just bought a used KM Horsebox from Equi-trek. The service from Jodie and Steve was exemplary, nothing was too much trouble. They responded to every query i had quickly. and the preparation of the Lorry was fantastic, they completely refurbished the Horse area, they replaced the floor in the living, the Generator was faulty so they fitted a new Honda unit, they even replaced every catch on the Lorry. They went totally beyond my expectation and i would recommend them highly to anyone. Fantastic guys, thank you.

Capacity: Up To 2 Horses

The compact, versatile and easy to drive Sonic Five offers a five seater cab with five seat belts; designed with family and friends in mind. The belt anchorages and installation have been rigorously tested and conform to 2005/41/EC, making them fully EU type approved for safety and confidence. The rear seats have the option of converting to two bunks for overnight stays. The Sonic Five has the added benefit of a tack/changing room that is separate from the horses.  This incorporates two saddle racks, bridle racks and coat hooks.
