Generally speaking, Amber Cove is very safe. The local population is very friendly but not pushy and speak English reasonably well. For those cruising with families , there is a lot do. Cruise passengers with disabilities or with walking difficulties will find it very smooth to wander around in Amber Cove on your own.

With a few exceptions, the cruise port in Amber Cove is mainly visited by ships belonging to Carnival Corporation like Carnival Cruises, Princess, Holland America, Costa, P&O or Cunard. However, other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, NCL, Regent or MSC also call at Amber Cove.

Amber Cove is on the Bay of Maimon, near Puerto Plata, a historical city officially known as San Felipe de Puerto Plata with a population of around 290,000. Cruise passengers that prefer to explore ports on your own will find it straightforward to travel to most attractions close by Amber Cove. There are public buses, which can be complicated to navigate unless you are a fluent Spanish speaker but there are Taxis and Car Rental available.

Taxis and Uber

Cruise travelers will find taxis at the transportation hub in the Amber Cove Cruise Center. Taxis do not offer specific excursions prices. Drivers speak reasonable English. Taxis tend to be relatively new, are not metered, and most have airconditioning. Taxis have reasonable fares and accept cash both in US dollars and local currency. Uber does not operate in Amber Cove.

Taxi fares below are for one way per cab (up to 5 passengers) sharing a Taxi. The extra coast for an additional person varies between $4.00 (ride to the Teleferico) and $10 (to Cabarete). Taxi fares may have been updated since last reviewed.

National and Alamo are the only two car rentals available at Amber Cove and charge similar prices: around USD $25 for a compact car per day and $60 for a full-size SUV. All cars are comparatively new, have air conditioning, and are automatic.

Local cuisine and drinks, dining in Amber Cove

If planning to spend the day at the Amber Cove Cruise Center, there are only two options to have lunch or a quick bite. Either going back to the ship or go to the two places where food is served in the service area: Cafe El Cibao and the Coco Cana Restaurant .

For those exploring the attractions of the Puerto Plata province, there many other places to have lunch. On the beaches close by there are great places to have lunch and in the Historical City of Puerto Plata , you will find several charming restaurants. Her is a list of our favorites:

There is more than enough choice in the Amber Cove Cruise Center for passengers looking for souvenirs, local gifts, or even jewelry and fine watches.

What's genuine and local?

Larimar (a mineral only found in the Dominican Republic) and Amber are the two most famous local gemstones but you may also consider other renowned local products like Chocolate, Cacao, Coffee, Honey, Rum, and Cigars.

Diamonds International and Effy are the two major names in Amber Cove, both with shops in the Cruise Center.

Entry Requirements and Visas

U.S., Canadian, UK or Australian passport holders do not need a tourist visa to the Dominican Republic.

Spanish is the official language of the Dominican Republic. English is reasonably well-spoken in all major touristic areas and sites.

The Dominican Peso (RD$) is the official currency, but US dollars are widely accepted. However, it is always advisable to carry some local cash.

Tipping and Haggling Customs

Tipping in restaurants is expected (between 10% and 15%). Because some Europeans are not used to tipping, make sure that the bill does not have a 10% service charge already added. Haggling is very much expected in the Dominican Republic except in supermarkets, coffee shops, or restaurants. But everywhere else haggling is encouraged.

Wi-fi and internet.

Wi-Fi is available in the Amber Cove Cruise Center at a cost of $8.00 for the entire day. In the historical center of Puerto Plata, many cafes and sites offer free Wi-Fi. T-Mobile offers unlimited data at up to 2G speeds at no extra cost.

T-Mobile offers calls at 25 cents/minute and text at no cost. The other US phone providers may work, but it is advisable to consult your provider to prevent roaming charges.

Health matters and emergencies

There is a pharmacy in the Amber Cove Cruise Center and over a dozen in the city center of Puerto Plata. Farmacia Popular, open every day from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM, is the most central and better rated. Farmacia Popular is on Calle Beller # 27, around the corner from Independence Square.

The closest hospital to Amber Cove Port is the University Hospital Ricardo Limardo in Puerto Plata City.

There is a Consulate of the United States in Puerto Plata, on Calle Villanueva 8, phone +1 809-586-8017. Open 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday. Closed on Saturday and Sunday.

La Romana – Dominican Republic

Experience the tropical paradise of La Romana in the Dominican Republic. Indulge in luxurious resorts, pristine white-sand beaches, and championship golf courses. The Dominican Republic (DR) is located in the north-central Caribbean. It occupies the eastern two-thirds of the Island of Hispaniola. The Dominican Republic is the second largest island country of the Greater Antilles island chain in the Caribbean sea.

La Romana is both a province and city in the DR. La Romana has historically been a company town. Almost all of the residents in the city work for Central Romana Corporation, an agro-industrial and tourism company.

Founded near the end of the 19th century, the city of La Romana grew rapidly after the establishment of a sugar mill in 1911. The area also produces coffee, tobacco, beeswax, cattle and hides.

The city of La Romana, while offering some attractions, is overshadowed by Casa de Campo a one-stop shopping/dining/activities location for cruise ship passengers with limited time. This resort is the flagship of the La Romana all-inclusive resorts area.

Good to Know

This is a tropical island, so take bug spray along with you.  Even if you are not heading to the beach, many establishments and restrooms are without air-conditioning and make the perfect spot for mosquitos to hang out waiting for you.

  The Dominican Republic has a reputation for being friendly and welcoming, but at the same time having a high crime rate. Opportunistic crime like theft and pickpocketing is common. It is best not to wear jewelry, carry large amounts of cash and to keep items like cell phones and cameras out of sight. Care needs to be taken at night and in remote areas.

The climate in La Romana is hot, oppressive, windy, and partly cloudy. Throughout the year, the temperature typically varies from 70°F to 90°F and is rarely below 67°F or above 92°F.

The Dominican Peso is legal tender in the Dominican. Both US dollars and the Euro are often accepted in tourist areas. For the most part, major credit cards are accepted in tourist areas. You will find an ATM at the cruise terminal.

Wireless Internet:

Unfortunately, there is no free WiFi at the cruise port in La Romana. Some restaurants and bars have free WiFi. Plaza Lama has WiFi access but no power access and the same for Trigo do Oro. 

Spanish is the official language of the Dominican Republic. In the tourist areas you will find some English being spoken.

Where You Dock in La Romana – Dominican Republic

The cruise terminal in La Romana is called Sugar Breeze Cruise Terminal. It is at the mouth of the Rio Dulce (or La Romana River). There is a docking pier on each riverbank.

Most ships will use the east side of the river, as the west side is a mixed-use industrial and cruise pier that has the minimum of services and amenities. 

The Sugar Breeze terminal is open-air space that has restrooms, an information desk, a shopping area, including duty-free, with a bar and coffee shop. You will also find a pharmacy, locals with handicraft stalls and anew pool area with swim-up bar opened at the beginning of 2023. You can rent umbrellas for the day and a restaurant will be opening soon. In the meantime, there are a couple of food trucks parked by the red and white lighthouse.  There is also a sandy area, giving the illusion of a beach, but you’ll have to leave the cruise port to find a real beach.

Taxis will queue here and the train/trolley that goes downtown can be boarded in this area. The shuttle bus to Altos de Chavon (replica 16th Century Mediterranean village,  one of the main attractions in the area) is also at this terminal.

Getting Around La Romana – Dominican Republic

It is possible, but not practical to walk from the cruise ship pier to downtown La Romana. It is not a picturesque walk and will take you the better part of an hour. Be careful when crossing the road. Drivers in DR do not always signal when turning and the motorbikes disregard traffic signals like red lights.

Minibus/Shuttle

There is a shuttle bus that leaves from the cruise terminal that will take you into downtown La Romana. The shuttle will drop you off at the Duarte Central Park, which is across the street from the Iglesia Santa Rosa de Lima (church), and there are often vendors selling souvenirs in the park. 

Chu Chu Train

This “train” leaves from the port and does round-trip tours of La Romana in a fun open-air setting. It’s about a 35 minute tour for $15 per person (2021) and you’ll discover the history and architecture of the area.

Taxis line up at the dock. Most drivers will expect you to negotiate.

It is best not to use motorbike taxis called motoconchos. Drivers are not the most reliable and you will not be provided with a helmet.

Just be aware that the DR has one of the highest death rates in the world for road traffic accidents. According to the WHO | World Health Organization ,  about  63% of those road deaths were people on motorcycles. Accidents are frequent, especially during holidays.

Drivers in the DR tend not to respect traffic laws, they rarely signal and weaving from lane to lane is common. Drinking and driving is also common.

If you are involved in an accident in the DR, you have to file a report with authorities, even if there were no injuries. If the accident involves injury or death, the driver will be taken into police custody as a matter of law, even if that driver is not at fault, until an investigation takes place.

Not to beat a dead horse, but you also need to be aware that police may flag you down and accuse you of some type of traffic infraction. They will expect a “regalo” of $100 upon which you will be free to go.  

You need to be at least 21 years of age with a credit card, photo drivers license and a passport to rent a car. You will be prohibited from driving your rental car into Haiti, and any insurance you purchase for the car will be null and void if you do so.

Traffic can be a headache in DR, and all signs are in Spanish. Roads in the major cities are good, but in rural areas they are not. Driving is on the right hand side in the DR.

Shopping In La Romana – Dominican Republic

There are a few items that the Dominican Republic is known for or that are unique to the D.R. that would make for great souvenirs:

Jewelry –  made with semi-precious stones amber or larimar (light blue polished stone) or necklace with a shark tooth (said to bring good luck to the wearer)

Food and Beverages – Dominican coffee, rum, cocoa balls

Handicrafts – Lime dolls (dolls with no face), paintings by local artists, crafts with shells or coconut shells

Other – cigars and cosmetics made with natural oils and extracts (look for cocoa, coconut, etc. – and they should have a short expiration date because of the natural products used)

Shopping at the Cruise Terminal

There are a number of shops at the cruise terminal, so if you’re looking to pick up something to commemorate your trip to La Romana without having to leave the terminal grounds, you’re in luck. 

The Tax and Duty Free shop will be the first you encounter, since everyone is funneled through here after departing the ship. You’ll find the typical duty-free products (liquor, perfume, cosmetics) plus a few local items. It’s pretty chaotic in here when everyone first disembarks, so if you’re really looking to purchase something , it’s recommended to come back to browse a little later. 

Outside of the above shop, you’ll find jewelry stores, local artisans with pop-up shops, a drugstore and market, an organic cosmetics shop, and the typical port souvenir stores selling fridge magnets, Christmas ornaments, hats, bags and dresses.

Shopping in La Romana

The city of La Romana has a population of more than 130,000 so there are many shops that cater to locals. 

If you take the shuttle from the port that drops you off at the Duarte Central Park, less than a 10 minute walk is the Plaza Lama , a one-stop shopping center that has everything from groceries to refrigerators to toilets to clothing. 

If you are renting a car, or feel like taking the long, not recommended, walk into the city, another large Walmart-type shopping center, Jumbo , is less than 2 miles from the port. Further away (about a 20 minute drive) is the popular Multiplaza , which is an indoor shopping mall and in addition to a number of stores has a food court, cinema and a mini-version of Ikea.

Dining In La Romana – Dominican Republic

Depending on where you travel in the Dominican Republic, you will run across some familiar faces: KFC, Wendy’s Burger King, Subway and McDonald’s will greet you. While you might tend towards the run of the mill, give some of the specialty dishes of the DR a try.

The sancocho (meat and vegetable stew) asopao (shrimp and rice pottage) and pollo guisado (braised chicken) all are good items to try.

Restaurants in La Romana

Shish kabab.

While the service may sometimes be slow, the food is good at this Middle Eastern restaurant. The name may suggest that all they have are shish kebabs, but they also have seafood, rice, chargrilled meats and burgers and some local dishes.

NOLA Bar &  Grill

You will find pizza cooked in a wood fired oven, burgers, jambalaya rice and mofongos at this highly-rated restaurant that serves Caribbean and Creole dishes. Try a passion fruit mojito, whiskey sour or cosmos to go with your meal. Fun and friendly atmosphere here.

El Taquito Mexicano

As you can tell from the name, this is a Mexican restaurant. You can stick with a simple taco or try a Fajitas Pastor which comes highly recommended.

Crema Pasteleria

Head here after dinner or lunch (or breakfast) for a good dessert. Get a slice of cheesecake, pie, pasteles and bastilla. The croissants and tarts can be paired with a cappuccino, fresh juices or cortado.

Las Palmas, Bayahibe

If you happen to take an excursion to  the resort town of Bayahibe, about a half hour’s drive from the cruise port, check out the highly-rated Las Palmas. They specialize in seafood and Caribbean dishes with water views.

Onno’s Bar & Restaurant, Altos de Chevon

If you are heading to the popular Altos de Chevon while docked in La Romana, a visit to Onno’s Bar is a must. This Latin influenced bar and grill has seafood, pizza, and shrimp tacos. The burgers are said to be the best on the island and the tuna tartare also received high marks.

Things To Do in La Romana – Dominican Republic

Casa de campo.

This 7,000-acre resort is the name of the game in La Romana province. It tends to be the main draw for cruise ship passengers. While the city of La Romana is picturesque, most tourists will find that most of the facilities that cater to visitors are found at the resort village of Casa de Campo (country house).

Casa de Campo, though a resort, is like a town in itself. It has golf, tennis, skeet-shooting and horseback-riding available through ship excursion only. There are many upscale restaurants located here along with beach access and watersports.

Within Casa de Campo, you’ll find Teeth of the Dog one of the premier golf courses in the world. This 18 hole golf course has seven holes that hug the craggy coral formations that rise out of the Caribbean sea. Listed as # 7 in Golf Magazine’s Best public golf courses 2021-22 , the course was designed by Peter Dye.

This is a private, gated resort, so in order to enjoy all of its amenities, including private beaches, purchase a day pass through ResortPass . Altos de Chavon

Also under the Casa de Campo banner is the very popular attraction of Altos de Chavon. Sculpted from stone, this model of a 16th century Mediterranean village is a great place to get a feel for the medieval time period. Set on top of a cliff, this cultural hub overlooks the Chavon River. Museums, lush foliage and spectacular views make it worth the trip. 

Because it is part of the private resort, there is an entrance fee in order to visit Altos de Chavon, which can be paid at the main entrance to the resort. 

Cave of Wonders (Cueva de las Maravillas)

About 30 miles outside of La Romana, this attraction has an English-speaking guide. There are Taino Indian cave drawings to see, too. The cave system is equipped with a lighting system, ramps, a footpath and elevator. An impressive array of rock art, stalactites and stalagmites show you why it lives up to its name “cave of wonders.” 

Isla Saona (Cotubanama National Park)

This part of the National Park covers about 42 square miles. This tropical paradise is accessible by boat excursion from Bayahibe village. It’s about a 25 minute drive from the cruise terminal in La Romana and its beaches attract more visitors than all of the DR’s National Parks combined.

There are sandy beaches, tropical forests, limestone landscapes and an amazing amount of caves. Spelunker’s will be hard pressed to run out of caves to explore and there are several caves that are easily explored, even for the novice. There are numerous trails to hike through the rainforest, which is teaming with hundreds of species of birds and over 500 species of flora.

The Dominican Republic has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. There is no shortage of white sand and warm waters in the DR.

Playa La Caleta

This beach is the closest to La Romana city. Locals go here to swim and there are a few restaurants in the vicinity. The beach is mostly sand, but with a mixture of rocks and pebbles so bring your swim shoes.

Playa Bayahibe

About a 10 minute taxi ride from La Romana this public beach in the village of Bayahibe has water sports and along with restaurants and shops. It is one of the most popular beaches in DR. 

Playa Dominicus

This beach is one of the longest white sand beaches in the Dominican Republic and is located just south of Bayahibe. While lined by hotels, the beach is still public. Popular for the shallow, turquoise water that makes swimming great, it also has a reef off of its shore for snorkeling.

Inside the Amber Cove Cruise Port in Dominican Republic

Although the swirling blue slides aren’t visible the exact moment you step off the ship at Amber Cove cruise port, they could be. Instead, what you see are the brightly-colored cabanas tantalizingly balanced on the wooden walkway over the ocean. If you’re not sure what to expect from your day (or longer) in the port of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Amber Cove will warm you up. 

About Amber Cove Cruise Port

Amber Cove port is the exclusive port for Carnival Corporation’s lines, including Holland America, Princess, and Carnival. (I first visited on the now-defunct Fathom line .) The $85 million port is located near Puerto Plata on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic.

Although the port itself doesn’t have a beach, there are lot of options for on-site activities, and it is close to great beaches and other attractions.

The Dominican Republic port has many things that are typical of a cruise port in the Caribbean, but there are also lots of activities and offerings that set it apart, making the port a destination itself.

It’s not usually my style to hang out at the port when I take cruises. Usually I’m off exploring local beaches , scuba diving , or snorkeling . But sometimes you need a balance between adventure and relaxation, and Amber Cove is great for that. Here’s a look at some of the things you can do in the comfort of the cove.

The area is large, so there’s a lot to see. There are palm trees, man-made waterfalls, waterside hammocks, and fountains. In the main plaza, you’ll find giant colorful masks with descriptions explaining their significance.

The huge Amber Cove sign—conveniently positioned with your ship in the background—is a great place for taking photos. Afterward, get your passport stamped at a kiosk in the center of the port.

Shops are open when the ships are docked. There is, of course, a Diamonds International (this is obligatory at every port, right?) and a full complement of souvenir shops. There is every kind of duty-free rum you could hope for, with free tastings available.

The most unique shopping opportunity is at the artisan market. You’ll find a variety of local products, including food items like chocolate, handmade recycled paper, jewelry, and more. Because the products are truly local, purchases here help to support the local economy beyond the port.

The winding pool (numerous lifeguards included) occupies a large section of the port. It twists and turns at different depths that are perfect whether you want the wading area for children or the deeper area that becomes a swim up bar at the Coco Cana. And what’s not to love about a swim up bar? Plus, there’s a sea of pristine, blue lounge chairs just waiting for guests.

Just next to the pool area are those alluring, swirling slides. The side-by-side tubes allow you to race your friends to the bottom and provide just as much (if not more) fun for adults as for kids.

If you’re looking for something even more active, clip onto the twin zip lines that run above the pool. For just $20, you can speed down them an unlimited number of times.

Nearby, you can rent pretty much any kind of equipment you need to make your day more enjoyable. Kayaks ($19-46) and stand up paddleboards ($20-32) can help you explore the bay adjacent to the port. For something different, try out an aquaboat cycle—like a cross between and paddle boat and a bicycle.

Yes, there’s Coco Cana in the pool area, but there are other options if you want to get away from some of the crowds. The aptly-name Sky Bar at the top of the hill is a great place to watch the sunset, or you can head to El Cibao Café for coffee. At El Cibao, you can learn about coffee production in the Dominican Republic and sample the different varieties.

As much fun as the staying at the port is, there is lots of natural beauty to see in the surrounding area. Consider booking a tour or venturing out on your own.

These tours are solid options for how to spend a day.

My favorite activity during my visit to the Puerto Plata area was a trip to Playa Dorada. This half-day trip will ensure you get in some quality beach time.

Puerto Plata is an area rich in culture. This three-hour tour will take you to the malecon, have you visit a local rum factory, and see gorgeous mountaintop views.

Those that are looking for adventure beyond the port just need to walk in, turn left, and head out near the back of the complex. That’s where you’ll find the National / Alamo car rental counter if you’re feeling like exploring the island on your own.

If you’re looking for something between a planned shore excursion and a sporty day driving yourself in the Dominican Republic , visit the taxi stand. Hiring a taxi can help you have a day in town, take a trip to the 27 waterfalls attraction, or do any of the other things to do on the island. Be aware that the taxis are pricey compared to those at other Caribbean ports, so you may want to gather a group.

What time of year did you go? We'll be going in a week and I'm curious as to the water temp in the pool in port.

I've been to the DR in December and April and know someone who went to the pool in Amber Cove just last week. Considering the number of cruises that visit Amber Cove in the Christmas and New Years time frame, I would imagine it should be pretty comfortable. Have a great time!

What to Do in Puerto Plata on a Cruise (Big List + Tips & Things to Know)

Sitting on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata (translation: Silver Port) sits right in the middle between the tip of Cuba and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The area is steeped in history dating back literally to Christopher Columbus, who founded nearby La Isabela as the first European settlement in North America in 1493.

Today the area is a bustling city of approximately 150,000 that’s also become a popular cruise destination with multiple ports. If your cruise includes a stop in Puerto Plata, then you might be wondering what to do during your stay. We’ll cover lots of options of what to experience in Puerto Plata on your cruise, along with some helpful information about what to expect on your day in port.

Overview & What Puerto Plata Like?

Whereas many port cities in this area of the world can seem like they are there only to serve tourists, Puerto Plata is different. Tourism is a major part of the economy, but it’s also a real town.

As you would expect given the location along the coast, the beach plays a big role in the things to do and see. However, there is also history, natural scenery, and dramatic landscapes to enjoy (along with plenty of touristy things too!).

There are two different cruise ports in the area. If you are sailing on a Carnival Corporation line (Carnival, Princess, etc.), then you will dock at Amber Cove. This is a dedicated port area about six miles from the center of Puerto Plata. Built in the mid-2010s, this port is definitely touristy with manicured grounds, a pool/bar area for passengers, shops, and restaurants. You could theoretically spend the entire day here and be entertained.

The second port is the Taino Bay port, located right near the heart of the city. This port also offers the typical touristy shopping port area to passengers, but offers easy access to the sights of the city center as well.

As for the city itself, it offers up a very Latin feel. It’s bustling with tourists and locals going around the city by car, motorcycle, or walking. Buildings are built almost to the street and densely packed, as is common in older cities with Spanish influence, providing a lot to see in a small amount of space.

The surrounding areas are lush and mountainous, giving a natural beauty to the area. It’s also a chance to see the real Dominican Republic in that there are parts that are drop-dead beautiful combined with poorer areas that make you appreciate what you have at home.

That all combines to make Puerto Plata a unique place that offers an experience we found much more interesting than more “sanitized” cruise ports.

Getting Around Puerto Plata

If you plan to leave the port to explore, you have a few options for getting around.

Walking: If you dock at the port near the city center, then you can simply walk many places. For instance, from the port to Parque Central, the walk is just about 15 minutes. It’s another 10-15 minutes to spots like the beachfront and even less time to the famous Umbrella Street and Paseo de Dona Blanca (more on these spots below).

Taxi: If you don’t want to walk or you are docked at Amber Cove, then a taxi is an option. Just know that rates are expensive. A sign posted shows the fixed rates. A ride from Amber Cove to Puerto Plata is $35 each way for up to five passengers. That’s for a trip that’s only about six miles. Still, given Amber Cove’s setup, there really isn’t another option unless taking an excursion.

Shore Excursions: Booking a shore excursion to go out and explore the area? Then your transportation will be included in the trip. Given that the cost of a taxi is fairly high, it’s something that you should consider when pricing out things to do. Having a ride to and from the port included isn’t just convenient, it can save you money.

Things to Do in Puerto Plata on a Cruise

Below we cover a number of things to do while you are in port on your cruise.

Visiting Amber Cove

Sailing on Carnival (or a sister cruise line)? Then you’ll dock at Amber Cove ( see our guide to the port here ). The port area is built as a literal playground for passengers. On one side is a number of shops to explore, a photo opp in front of the ship, and restaurants. The other side includes a large pool area with loungers, a swim-up bar, zipline, waterslides, and a splash pad for small kids. There are also other amenities to rent, from a wi-fi day pass to kayaks to cabanas. In short, you can spend your entire day here in the shadow of the ship if you want.

Visiting Taino Bay

Sailing another cruise line like NCL, Royal Caribbean, MSC, or Virgin Voyages? Then you will dock at the Taino Bay port, right near the center of Puerto Plata. Like Amber Cove, it also provides a lot for passengers to enjoy without going far. There are shops, restaurants, and bars, along with a pool area and man-made beach (though no open water swimming) that offers views of the ship. If you’re wanting to stay close to the ship, this is an easy way to spend the day. Just know that the port area can get crowded.

Isabel de Torres (Cristo Redentor Statue)

Just south of Puerto Plata sits Isabel de Torres — a tree-covered mountain that overlooks the city and the sea. An excursion can take you here (or take the cable car, covered below). It’s a national park and features a walk through beautiful forest and manicured grounds. Here atop the mountain it can be breezy and 20 degrees cooler than at sea level, so be sure to dress a little warmer. But the payoff is the view of the city below and the chance to see Cristo Redentor — a statue of Christ with arms spread that watches over the port.

Umbrella Street

Located near Parque Central, if you’re wanting an “Instagram” spot, this is one of two must-sees. It’s a small cross street that’s closed to traffic and a metal frame structure has been built over it. There, dozens of colorful umbrellas are hung above the street creating a unique area that’s pedestrian-friendly, with small shops to explore, colorful umbrellas, and beautiful bougainvillea plants adding to the atmosphere.

Paseo de Dona Blanca

We mentioned one of two “must-sees” for the most photo-worthy sports. The first is Umbrella Street. The second is Paseo de Dona Blanca. It’s literally a half-block from Umbrella Street, and right near the center of town, making both spots popular to visit at once. What’s special about this alleyway is that it’s pink. We don’t mean a little pink. We mean from the roof of buildings down to the walkway, everything is painted a bright pink. It’s a short walk through the alley, but it’s a unique spot that you can’t miss.

Teleferico to Isabel de Torres (Cable Car)

We mentioned Isabel de Torres — the mountain that overlooks the city with stunning views. There are two ways up. First, you can drive up, or you can take a cable car (also known as the Teleferico). The entrance is about a mile from the cruise port in town. From here you can hop aboard the car for the ride to the top, providing stunning views as you do. Once there, you’ll be right at the Christ the Redeemer statue and can tour the mountain top before heading back down.

Ocean World

You can think of Ocean World as a Puerto Plata version of SeaWorld. It’s a popular spot to enjoy with families as there is lots for kids to do and it sits roughly in the middle between the two cruise ports in the area. You can purchase a day pass (or book an excursion through the cruise line) that gives you access to snorkeling, animal shows, beach, pool, and waterslides. In addition, there are other opportunities to do things like swim with dolphins, or shark and sea lion encounters for an extra cost.

Playa Neptuno

In Puerto Plata there are plenty of beaches — the entire city sits on the coast. But one of the neatest is Playa Neptuno. That’s because sitting off the coast is a small island about 1,000 feet from shore. There is an imposing statue of Neptune erected that looks back over the beach. Perhaps best of all, this beach area is much calmer and quieter than the busy port areas if you’re looking for a place to swim.

Fort San Felipe

We’ve mentioned the history in Puerto Plata, but unfortunately much has been lost to time. One spot that remains is Fortaleza San Felipe. It sits overlooking the Taino Bay cruise port, and when it was built in 1577, it served to protect the harbor from pirates. These days you can tour the fort or just explore the park that surrounds it, with views of the ships, the ocean, and lots of green space.

Amber Museum

Jurassic Park fans may remember one of the opening scenes where a mine in the Dominican Republic finds a piece of amber with a mosquito trapped inside. That led to the cloning of dinosaurs and the invention of the park. These days, amber is a big part of Puerto Plata’s history and culture. You’ll find it for sale in many shops. If you want to know more, you can check out the Amber Museum , which includes a chance to see pieces with historic animals, plants, and insects encased inside.

Parque Central

In most Latin American cities, there is a central plaza that serves as the heart of the city. Puerto Plata fits that bill as well. Parque Central is an open square with seating, vendors, historic statues, and all lined by Spanish colonial architecture including a massive church. Have a seat and you can people watch to your heart’s content. It also serves as a great starting point for exploring the downtown area.

Catamaran Sail & Snorkel

Sure there is lots of history and culture in the area. But when you’re on a cruise, sometimes you just want to party a bit. In that case, look for shore excursions being offered by the cruise line for catamaran sailing with snorkeling. These trips will pick you up, take you on a catamaran ride to a snorkel spot. After a round of snorkeling, it’s back on the ship for lunch, open bar, and music. It’s a fun way to spend the day on the water having a great time.

All-Inclusive Beach Day

Another way to spend the day is with a shore excursion to one of the many all-inclusive resorts in the area. Check your cruise line’s listing of offers. They will likely have 2-3 different options that include time at a beach with food and drinks served. It can be an easy way to spend some time enjoying yourself without the crowds that you’ll find in the port areas.

Damajagua Waterfalls

One of the natural wonders of the area is Damajagua Waterfalls. If you’re wanting an adventure along with something that you can’t do anywhere else, this is it. Your cruise line will have an excursion to the area, which takes you into the forest. You’ll be given a helmet and life jacket, hike into the area where waterfalls and natural pools of water are found. From there, you can slide down the falls or jump off the small cliffs (there are also ladders available). It’s not ideal for small kids or older folks, but those looking for adventure will love it.

If you’re visiting Puerto Plata on a cruise, here are some tips and things to know that can make your day run smoother.

Factor in Ride Costs on Shore Excursions

If you’re looking at an excursion and wondering if you can do it cheaper on your own… likely not. That’s because taxi prices in the area are ridiculously high. A ride from Amber Cove to the city center is only about 6-7 miles but costs $70 round trip. Keep that in mind when considering what you plan to do for the day.

Free Wi-fi in Port

If you’re in port, look around for shops or restaurants offering wi-fi services. As a perk to get you in the door, many offer up wi-fi access for no charge, giving you a chance to check email or get in touch back home for cheap.

Photo Opportunities Are Everywhere

If you want to get a picture in front of the ship, you’re in luck. Both ports offer lots of opportunities to get a souvenir shot. Amber Cove, for instance, features a massive sign that you can stand between, with the cruise ship over your shoulder.

An Easy Rule for Exchange Rates

The U.S. dollar is widely accepted in Puerto Plata, but many things are priced only in Dominican pesos. If you’re wondering about the exchange rate, it’s currently around 55 pesos to 1 dollar. While it’s not perfect, an easy rule of thumb is to just double the price in Dominican pesos and then put a decimal point two places in. So if something is priced at 350 pesos, double it to 700 and then put a decimal two spots in for $7.00. A t-shirt costing 1,300 pesos comes out to roughly $26.00 in U.S. dollars. It’s not perfect, but an easy way to ballpark costs.

Heading to Explore Town? Take Screenshots of a Map Before You Leave

One easy thing to do in port is simply walk around the downtown area, exploring on your own or seeing the sights like Paseo de Dona Blanco or the town square. If you decide to do this, it’s smart to take screenshots of the area on your mapping app for your phone. This way, even if you don’t have service you will have a map to refer to in order to get around town.

Try to Visit Umbrella Street Early

One of the most popular sights in the city is Umbrella Street, but if you’re going to visit, then it’s a good idea to try and go earlier in the day. Given its popularity, the place can fill up in the afternoon when everyone is out and about. An earlier visit should give you more time for pictures without having too many other people in the shot.

Public Beaches Are Everywhere

If you just want to hang on the beach, then there are a number of public beaches around. However, the port areas themselves don’t offer public beach access. You’ll have to go outside the port to hit the sand and surf. You can walk the avenue that runs along the coast until you find a spot you like. As well, many beaches have a number of restaurants and beach bars where you can also have a bite to eat in the shade.

Amber Cove Passengers Will Need a Ride Anywhere

While passengers in Taino Bay can simply walk into town, if you’re docked at Amber Cove (for Carnival ships), then no such luck. Here the walk from the ship to out of the port’s gate is roughly half a mile. And after that there isn’t anything else within walking distance. That means if you’re wanting to go explore, you’ll need to pay a taxi fare or book an excursion.

You Can Easily Spend All Day in Port Areas (But You’ll Miss Out)

Not feeling adventurous? Or maybe you just want to have a low-key day. In that case, you absolutely can have a full day without leaving the port area. Both Taino Bay and Amber Cove offer areas for passengers tp enjoy without ever leaving the port. This includes pools, shopping, and restaurants. To be sure, this isn’t the real Puerto Plata or Dominican Republic, and we think you’ll miss out on a lot by not getting out and exploring. But if you want it easy, it doesn’t get any easier.

Be Ready for Rain

In total, Puerto Plata gets about 60 inches of rain a year. The good news is that during the busy summer months of June-September, it’s fairly dry with only 2-3 inches of rain on average per month. But November through May see anywhere from 5 inches up to 9 inches (November and December) on average each month. In other words, if visiting in the winter, pack a rain jacket just in case.

Unsure of those prices. However, the cable car is relatively close to Taino Bay — about a 20 minute walk.

The Port's cargo terminal is currently operated by Cementos Andino SA (1998-founded Colombian company) which exports cement clinker and concrete, as well as bauxite and limestone.

On June 1, 2022, officially started the construction works on Cabo Rojo Cruise Port (~US$100 million project). The port was completed in December 2023 (Phase 1) and officially inaugurated on January 4, 2024. The project includes building two docking facilities/piers, a modern passenger terminal, a premium yacht marina, a large water park.

When fully completed, Cabo Rojo Cruise Port has projected annual capacity to receive/handle up to 1 million cruise tourists.

The project's Phase I (June 2022 thru December 2023) included building two piers and the cruise terminal. Phase II (planned for completion in 2024-Q2) includes the expansion of the terminal, adding two more cruise piers and a pier dedicated to fishing boats.

The cruise port's annual passenger capacity is around 1 million, targeting predominantly international tourists.

Cabo Rojo cruise port is managed by APORDOM (Dominican Port Authority) and ITM Group (based in Cancun Mexico ). ITM also operates the cruise ports Costa Maya (Yucatan, Quintana Roo Mexico) and Taino Bay/Puerto Plata (Dominicana) . According to ITM, Cabo Rojo's cruise shipping activities could generate annually between US$120-150 million.

Cabo Rojo cruise port project's cost was estimated at ~RD$ 7,1 billion (Dominican pesos/~USD 126 million) and the entire money (a private investment) was provided via a loan from Banco Central de la Republica Dominicana (the country's Central Bank). Reportedly, the project was expected to generate 5000+ local jobs (direct and indirect) thus boosting Pedernales province's economy.

In 2022, Dominican Republic's investments in the Pedernales region were ~US$80-90M, and an additional ~US$150-200M was invested in 2023. The Government's RD$ 15B (~USD 270M) development plan included the construction of three coastal hotels near the cruise port (combined capacity 1600 rooms), building six more hotels, an advanced wastewater treatment plant, supporting infrastructure, internal roads, as well as repairs and expansion of the Barahona Enriquillo Coastal Highway and a new airport (cost ~US$70M).

In February 2023, NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line included Cabo Rojo Pedernales in its 2024 schedule as a new Caribbean destination. NCL's itineraries that visited Cabo Rojo in 2024 (January, March, April) were roundtrips from La Romana (Dominicana) and scheduled for the Norwegian Sky ship . In January 2025 NCL's ship Norwegian Jewel was also listed in Cabo Rojo Port's schedule. Norwegian Sky's 14-day " Panama Canal : Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic" itinerary (Jan 3-17) was a roundtrip from Tampa Florida USA . The Panama Canal segment was a partial transit ( Gatun Lake cruising ).

In 2023, the Dominican Republic also made investments in upgrades to Port Samana , which is often visited by ships of NCL-Norwegian and RCI-Royal Caribbean International .

The road distance from Cabo Rojo Port to Pedernales City is approx 20 km / 12 mi. Pedernales is on the Dominicana-Haiti border and has a border crossing to Anse-a-Pitres. The municipality's economy is based on agriculture (beans, coffee), beef cattle and goats, mining (bauxite), commercial fishing (lobster, lambi) and domestic tourism. The most visited tourist destinations are Bahia de las Aguilas Beach and Sierra de Bahoruco National Park, both a short distance from Pedernales.

Cabo Rojo Airport is approx 16 km / 10 mi southeast of Pedernales City (population around 30,000). The airport serves only domestic flights.

Cabo Rojo (translated Cape Red) signifies both the cape and the beach (Playa Cabo Rojo). This part of Dominicana is known for its bauxite mines, pristine turquoise waters and scenic white-sand beaches, the most popular of which are Cabo Rojo and Bahia de las Aguilas (8-km/5-mi long beach).

Dominican Republic's Cabo Rojo has namesakes in Mexico's Veracruz state (a sand barrier approx 55 km / 34 mi south of Tampico, Tamaulipas, that encloses Laguna de Tamiahua) and Puerto Rico (a city and municipality part of the San German-Cabo Rojo metro area).

When inaugurated (Dec 2023), Puerto Cabo Rojo will have only one floating pier plus several anchorage areas.

When fully completed, the cruise port will have one large concrete piers with four docks/berthing positions (two on each pier) with capacity to accommodate four large ships simultaneously. Another fixed pier will serve fishing vessels.

Cruise Terminal's facilities include a passenger reception hall, aquapark, interactive play zone, outdoor playgrounds for kids, recreational and commercial facilities (including entertainment venues, shops, wellness complex), a large-capacity restaurant, a boutique hotel and an exclusive beach area.

Cabo Rojo's first cruise ship is currently scheduled to dock on December 14th (2023).

The Hidden Russia

Tomsk has none of the historical pomp and circumstance of Russia's two major tourist destinations, Moscow and St. Petersburg . For the traveler who hankers for something besides glittering churches and postcard-familiar scenery, Tomsk offers something more subdued. Wooden houses, like those out of a favorite Russian fairy tale, line the streets in various stages of repair or renovation. The many universities give the town a learned, serious atmosphere. And the museums are heavy with the gravity of Siberian history. Set in the midst of miles of taiga, Tomsk has a quiet dignity.

Tomsk Attractions and People

The best time to visit Tomsk is in the summer: June, July, or August. The sunny, warm days are perfect for taking walks in Lagerny Sad, the war memorial park that looks over the River Tom. The residential neighborhoods are full of points of interest, and the downtown area is great for shopping and eating. However, even on rainy days, you can find something to do. Not only is there a recently established art museum, but the Tomsk Regional Museum gives an in-depth look at how the peoples of Siberia once lived.

For those who want something special, it's imperative to check out the KGB Memorial Museum. Located in the original Tomsk KGB headquarters, it is a reminder of the terror of the Communist years and the many labor and concentration camps that were set up in the Tomsk region. The holding cells for prisoners also contain their stories of survival; a rotating exhibit honors the art, literature, and lives of those who were brave enough to fight against and tell about their experiences at the hands of the KGB. The museum is the only one like it in the country, and visitors can see Solzhenitsyn's signature in its guestbook.

The wooden houses are a point of pride for the people of Tomsk. Many of the more elaborate ones have become symbols of the city. The windows are bordered with elaborately carved wooden decorations, some in themes depicting birds or dragons. Some of these buildings are still inhabited, which seems a decent metaphor for the way the past in Siberia maintains a symbiont relationship with the present.

The rare Westerner in Tomsk will be met with wariness and curiosity, though seldom hostility. Anyone who shows interest in Tomsk or the Siberian way of life will make friends quickly. Tomichi, the citizens of Tomsk, love to have guests and to share their warm Russian hospitality with foreigners. Their knowledge of their city and of Siberian history can make a stay in this town especially meaningful. You can meet them at the American Center near Tomsk State University, at the central fountain where many Tomichi congregate during the evening, over drinks at one of the many bars, or even on the bus. Any foreigner tends to stand out, but this can be an advantage when trying to make friends.

Eating in Tomsk

One of the most delightful aspects of a Siberian summer is the food. The markets are full of delicious fruits and berries, all of which are at premium pricing for the traveler who is used to paying an arm and a leg for sub-par produce. There is an extensive variety of cheese and other dairy products, free from the processes that often make US diary bland and lacking consistency. At certain times of the week, you can visit stalls that sell meat freshly butchered or fish freshly caught. Be sure to be aware of any old woman by the side of the road with vegetables for sale  - they're almost always home-grown and delicious.

Tomsk is a part of Russia that is unique for the Eastern European traveler. Its small size and community atmosphere, along with its proximity to vast pine forests, make it an escape from the big city Russia that most tourists are familiar with. Fourteen hours by train will take you to a bigger city, Krasnoyarsk, and then you can ride the Trans-Siberian railroad on to Novosibirsk. However, given Tomsk's character and quality, it is unlikely any visitor will be in a hurry to leave.
