Artificially Intelligent Help for Planning Your Summer Vacation

Travel-focused A.I. bots and more eco-friendly transportation options in online maps and search tools can help you quickly organize your seasonal getaway.

By J. D. Biersdorfer

J.D. Biersdorfer has been using smartphone apps for travel since the summer of 2007.

The summer travel season starts in just a few weeks, but if you are looking for software that goes beyond simply booking flights and hotels, you’re in luck. Search engines enhanced by artificial intelligence can help with your research and outline full itineraries. Certain older apps have recently been updated to suggest more eco-friendly travel options. And keeping it all organized on your phone is easier than ever. Here’s an overview.

Using an A.I. Travel Agent

General-purpose A.I.-powered search tools and chatbots like Google’s Gemini spin up a list of things to do on your vacation when asked, but A.I. bots that are fine-tuned for travel queries are often more comprehensive. These bots scout destinations, plan itineraries, search for accommodations and flights, map out road trips and do more — grabbing a lot of information at once and saving you all that time-consuming web trawling.

Give the software your specifics — like destination, length of stay, interests — and see what it suggests. Many A.I. helpers are free to use if you sign up for an account, but some charge a subscription fee for premium services; your app store has specifics.

Layla , formerly Roam Around, is one of the free vacation-oriented A.I. helpers you can find online, and it has teamed up with travel sites that include Skyscanner , Get Your Guide and Booking.com . If you prefer land-based car and camper journeys, Roadtrippers (free trial; $60 year) includes real-time traffic and air-quality information along with route planning. And old stalwarts like Tripadvisor and Expedia are now using A.I.-generated vacation builders.

But as others have also noted, while A.I. travel planners have much potential, many are still works in progress and usually display disclaimers admitting so.

A.I. bots have been known to offer generic advice like “enjoy lunch at a local restaurant,” suggest activities that are out of season or too far apart, repeatedly recommend the same restaurant, consistently steer you to their advertisers or point you to locations that have closed. If you ask different bots the same question, you may get nearly identical suggestions, all scraped from the same tourism websites.

Still, A.I. travel apps are improving as they learn, and can be useful for the trip research and coordination phase. Just be sure to double-check the bot’s work before you commit to a plan.

Finding Earth-Friendly Options

There’s no shortage of apps for booking transportation to your destination. But if you want to keep the environment in mind, recent updates to Google’s Maps and Search apps now suggest routes and methods that lower your personal impact on the planet.

Google for the past few years has been pointing people to flights with lower carbon emissions , alternative train routes , fuel-efficient driving directions and eco-friendly hotels . It is now expanding its walking, biking and public transit suggestions alongside car routes in several major cities and adding more electric-vehicle charging information. Google Flights shows jet emissions estimates . Google Search has a “consider taking the train” nudge with rail routes and prices under certain flight results.

Apple’s Maps app also shows mass transit , walking and cycling options for getting around town, along with charge-friendly routes for electric vehicles . However, the default apps on your phone are not the only aids. Third-party software for directions and sustainable travel abound.

For example, Citymapper, which covers most major cities in the United States, Europe and Asia, includes environmental impact statistics on some trips. Its directions often include accessibility options that avoid stairways , along with routes for the fastest, cheapest or easiest way to get where you’re going; Citymapper is free with in-app purchases.

Other apps available for those seeking environmentally minded vacations include Bikemap for community-sourced cycling routes around the world, HappyCow for vegan and vegetarian travelers and Tap Hydration and Water Stations to locate sources for refilling reusable water bottles.

Keeping Organized

If you don’t already have software for consolidating your trip information, your phone’s default apps can help. Electronic boarding passes, hotel reservations and advance tickets can be quickly added to the digital wallet on your phone; a pragmatic paper backup tucked in your bag is insurance. Google and Apple offer to automatically add reservations and events from email and messages to your calendar .

Free services like TripIt (and its phone apps ), TripCase (also with Android or iOS apps) and Wanderlog automatically put all your travel information in one place, typically by scanning the information in your confirmation emails. TripIt Pro , a $50-a-year subscription version, adds more features like seat, fare and airline-points trackers, as well as international travel tools and regional risk alerts like those for extreme weather that can affect airline schedules and public safety .

A.I. bots and travel apps will continue to evolve and, hopefully, make vacation planning even easier in the future. Just don’t forget to occasionally put the phone down and enjoy your time off once you get there.

Google Maps travel tips to navigate and learn about places you visit (even without Wi-Fi)

"Easy Travel” is a ten-part series focusing on how to reduce bumps during vacations, anticipate roadblocks and be ready when things aren’t going your way. If you'd like to contribute to our future reporting and share your experience as a source, you can click here to fill out this quick form .

It goes without saying, but gone are the days of paper maps for navigating. We mostly all have phones in our pockets that can show us where to go, which comes in especially handy when traveling to a new place, even when reception isn’t guaranteed.

USA TODAY Travel reporters Zach Wichter and Kathleen Wong teamed up to share some of their favorite digital map tips to help travelers on their journeys.

Street navigation and offline map access

Zach: I’m a little map-obsessed myself. The post below on X, formerly Twitter, really speaks to me. So, before I visit a new place, I typically spend hours looking around on Google Maps to familiarize myself with the geography.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

It’s not just natural features I’m interested in, either. Google Maps comes in super handy for learning the basics of a new city’s transit system and other ways to get around. Especially if I’m arriving after an overnight flight, I like to know exactly how I will get to my lodging. I often take screenshots of transit directions for that first trip so I don’t have to worry about bad service or lack of airport Wi-Fi to get where I’m going.

However, I may want to start using the app directly more often.

Christina Tong, a senior product manager at Google, said "Live View" directions are available everywhere that Street View imagery exists.

“It’s a really new capability that is helping you navigate in augmented reality and be able to search your surroundings,” she said. Live View allows Maps users to see turn-by-turn directions overlaid on street view. Tong said the feature can be especially helpful for orienting yourself when you come out of a subway station and need to get your bearings.” You can even use it in some indoor locations like certain shopping malls and airports for more detailed wayfinding.

Live View is accessed through the camera icon on the walking directions tab. To use it, you must have an active internet or data connection.

Tong pointed out that the Maps team is also rolling out bike and scooter directions in many cities.

“This bike and scooter information is available on Google Maps in more than 500 cities globally,” she said, adding that information about vehicle availability, dock locations and battery levels for e-bikes and scooters is also provided in the bike directions tab.

Another cool feature that’s especially helpful when using Google Maps abroad is the option to download offline maps. Doing that allows you to navigate and find some basic information about popular sites where you’re visiting, even if you don’t have cell service outside of the U.S., like when I went on a reporting trip to Hamburg this spring. or are traveling somewhere with poor reception.

“Two cases for me: I’m about to go camping or take a road trip and I’m going to be driving through a place that has less phone reception coverage, or if I’m traveling internationally and my phone doesn’t cover a data plan,” Tong said. “This was actually one of our most requested tools and I’m really excited to share that with travelers.”

To download offline maps:

  • Tap your profile picture or the initial icon in Google Maps
  • Then tap “offline maps” and choose the select your own feature
  • Zoom in on the area you want to save, and then hit download

Cruising Altitude: Is airplane coffee safe to drink? I'll try to put the rumors to rest.

Customizing your map for a trip, collaborating with friends

Kathleen: When I travel, I always employ Google Maps – and not just for directions. The online tool helps me easily visualize my destinations to develop an efficient game plan.

I’ll include Google Maps in my research when I check out accommodations to book. I’ll scroll around to explore neighborhoods and see what businesses are nearby. (For obvious reasons, it’s important that a good coffee shop is within walking distance of my hotel or Airbnb.)

If a business catches my eye, I’ll save it to My Maps . Usually, I’ll make My Maps for different categories, like shops or bars I want to visit, and mark them with a color or icon.

  • To make your layered custom map, sign into your Google Maps account and open or create a map.
  • Add and name a layer, like "cool bars," then explore and save certain businesses to your layer. You can even add different colors and icons to your layers.
  • When you’re done, hit share or preview to see your custom map.

The Google Maps interface makes it easy to see the address, operating hours, contact information and if you can make reservations or order online. I’ll also do a quick look through reviews and photos. Based on how many reviews a place has, I can gauge if a place sounds popular – and will probably be busy. The digital tool also helps me support diverse businesses . You can see if a place is women-owned or LGBTQ+-owned, among other identities.

Tong also pointed out that hundreds of places are also getting added to Google Maps’ new Immersive View feature, which can help you better understand things like crowds and weather to plan your visit more precisely.

“Immersive view uses AI to fuse together billions of images and create this multidimensional view of a place,” she said.

If I’m traveling with friends, we’ll work together on marking places to visit and share the map link with each other, where all the pins live. When my New York-based friend visited me in Honolulu in 2021 for the first time, we brainstormed a map of spots that I wanted to take her to and others she wanted to visit ahead of time. We could even add notes, like saying if an eatery is a must-visit. When creating our daily itinerary, we looked at our custom map to see what was in the same vicinity so we could make the most of our time and not backtrack.

These custom maps also help me in the moment when I’m traveling. If it’s been a long day and I need to grab some dinner, I can open up Google Maps to see what spots I had previously vetted without having to frantically search for a place. Then, Maps will direct me right to the restaurant. (This is especially useful for those with dietary restrictions, so you already have a rolodex of eateries before the hanger kicks in.)

New Standard Seed Mixes

By: Ken Graeve, Erosion and Stormwater Management Unit Supervisor, Office of Environmental Stewardship

The MnDOT standard seed mixes that have been in Standard Specifications since 2014 are being replaced. The new seed mixes should be used in all plans letting in September 2024 and later. The overall goals for these updates are to improve short-term establishment and long-term function of roadside vegetation. Construction staff and contractors will appreciate the quicker establishment of these mixes.

Below is a timeline of how the new seed mixes and supporting information will be phased in. See the Guide to the New 2024 MnDOT Seed Mixes (PDF) for more information, including a crosswalk designers can use to replace the old seed mixes with the corresponding new mixes. Also watch the MnDOT Erosion – Vegetation website for the updated seeding manual, which will be published soon.

These new mixes will go into the MnDOT boilerplate special provisions in June. Designers should include them in plans for projects that will let on or after September 27, 2024. Do not use the old MnDOT mixes after the August 2024 letting. The MnDOT Seeding Manual will be updated in June to replace the old mixes with these new mixes.

The mixes will not be included in the upcoming 2025 Standard Specifications. Instead, they will live in the boilerplate special provision for the next several years. Those special provisions will override the seed standard specification (3876) and the associated references to seed mixes in other standard specifications in the 2025 spec book.

Special provisions related to the new seed mixes have been submitted to be published in the boilerplate.

Pay items for the new seed mixes have been added to the Transport List for MnDOT let projects.

Project designers should use new seed mixes in plans for all projects letting on or after September 27, 2024.

New seed mixes will be included in the published update to the MnDOT Boilerplate Special Provision Seeding Manual will be updated to show the new seed mixes.

September 2024

Projects letting on or after September 27, 2024 will use the new seed mixes.

Fall/Winter 2024

Some projects that have let in September may already start construction and plant the new seed mixes, but most planting with new seed mixes will not happen until 2025.

Seed Mix Substitution Table will be updated to include species in the new seed mixes

2025 Construction Season

New seed mixes will be used on many construction projects.

Old seed mixes will still be used on projects that let before September 2024.

Contractors and construction staff are encouraged to substituted new seed mixes for the old mixes in plans let before September 2024 by following the change order process. There will likely be a change in price when substituting mixes. Old seed mixes should not be substituted for the new mixes.

ARDOT releases traffic forecast map for total solar eclipse

J ONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - On Monday, March 25, ARDOT released its map highlighting some of the hot spots during April’s total solar eclipse.

The map designates the roads in Arkansas that are expected to see the areas with the highest amount of traffic right after the eclipse.

District 10 Engineer Brad Smithee said the department wanted to prepare for the event in the best way possible.

Four traffic volume designations are on the map: Extreme traffic, very high traffic, high traffic, and significant traffic.

Most of the Northeast Arkansas roads are classified as high and significant traffic.

Below are ARDOT’s definitions of high and significant traffic:

  • High – Volume will likely be above capacity for several hours, with significant delays occurring. If all goes well, traffic will probably clear within a few hours; however, incidents could quickly result in more severe problems.
  • Significant – Volumes will approach or modestly exceed capacity, with some delays. Any incidents could quickly worsen conditions on these roadways. Many of these routes are in locations where residents or local agencies are not accustomed to heavy traffic. Because ARDOT resources will largely be deployed on other routes, assistance from local agencies may be requested to ensure these routes continue to function as well as possible given the circumstances.

Smithee said he expects Highway 63 and I-555 to be among the most high-traffic areas.

“There will be a good number of folks that travel across I-40. They might just keep going West. I don’t know,” he said. “They might just come up I-55 and go up to Missouri. They might very likely turn on I-555 and come over to Jonesboro.”

Smithee explained that ARDOT’s map may differ from other traffic maps out there.

“One company might do something. It might see a particular trend that they believe is going to be more prevalent,” he said. “While someone else might just see another opportunity that they think is going to be a driving force behind something.”

ARDOT noted that the map is just a prediction, and no one will know what will happen until the eclipse on Monday, April 8.
