La criée au poisson de Houmt Souk

D’après la légende, la ville de Houmt Souk se serait développée sur une ancienne cité romaine nommée Gerba ... Aujourd’hui capitale de Djerba , Houmt Souk est réputée pour ses nombreux souks (textile, bijoux, alimentation, poterie, etc.).

Lors d’une promenade matinale, ne manquez pas sa célèbre criée en déambulant dans les allées du marché. Vous assisterez à des ventes aux enchères de poissons et pourrez – si vous osez – surenchérir à la vue d’une belle daurade ou d’un rouget fraîchement pêché ! Pour quelques dinars, vous pourrez même le faire griller et le déguster sur place. Un véritable moment authentique au cœur de la vie locale.

Le fort de Ghazi Mustapha et les Fondouks

Construit au XV ème siècle, le Borj El Ghazi Mustapha est un fort qui jouxte le port de pêche de Houmt Souk. À l’intérieur de ses murs de pierres ? Des objets historiques (découverts lors des fouilles de 1975) sont exposés dans un antiquarium . Situé en bord de mer, ce lieu superbement conservé offre une vue panoramique sur le large.

Après une escale au fort de Ghazi Mustapha, partez à la découverte des Fondouks dispersés dans les rues de Houmt Souk. Ces grands bâtiments carrés traditionnels témoignent de l'architecture du XVII ème siècle. Certains de ces caravansérails, transformés en restaurants, vous permettront également de goûter à la cuisine locale.

Le musée du patrimoine traditionnel de l’île de Djerba

Plus qu’une simple galerie, ce musée vous fera découvrir les coutumes et les arts traditionnels tunisiens, grâce à ses différents pavillons (salle de la poterie, salle de la pêche, du tissage, d'orfèvrerie, etc.). Avant de découvrir le musée proprement dit, vous entrerez sur le site en traversant son jardin archéologique. L’occasion d’admirer la végétation typique des zones arides. La Synagogue de la Ghriba

Située à 11 km au sud de Houmt Souk, la synagogue de la Ghriba compte parmi les monuments les plus importants de l’île. Ornée de mosaïques et de vitraux, elle jouit d’une architecture incroyable, avec ses arches et ses splendides faïences bleues.

Vous souhaitez la visiter ? Vous devrez vous déchausser et mettre une kippa pour découvrir ce lieu saint, considéré comme la plus vieille synagogue au monde (586 avant J. C !). Principal marqueur identitaire de la communauté juive de Djerba, cette édifice religieux attire chaque année des milliers de pèlerins à l’occasion de la fête Lag Ba'omer.

Djerbahood, une autre manière de visiter Djerba

La manifestation de street art Djerbahood se situe dans le village d’Erriadh, à deux pas de la synagogue. Galeries d’art à ciel ouvert, les rues sont le lieu d’expression privilégié de graffeurs venus du monde entier ! À l’origine de ce quartier atypique ? Le galeriste franco-tunisien Mehdi Ben Cheikh. Reconnu dans le milieu de l’art urbain, il installe son projet artistique dans le village en 2014. L’objectif est alors de faire dialoguer les habitants avec des artistes. Aujourd’hui, près de 300 œuvres de street art ornent les murs du quartier… Une escale incontournable pour visiter Djerba autrement.

Le village de Guellala

Le bourg de Guellala, situé au sud de Djerba, est un des rares villages où le dialecte berbère est toujours utilisé par les habitants. Dotée de nombreux gisements d’argile, cette petite ville est considérée comme la capitale de la poterie, et doit son nom à son activité commerciale. En effet, Guellala signifie « jarre » en français. Dès l'entrée du village, vous pourrez admirer ce savoir-faire ancestral, qui décore les rues et les trottoirs de mille et une couleurs.

Le site archéologique de Meninx

Le site de Meninx est situé sur la côte sud-est de l'île, près de l'actuelle cité d'Henchir El Kantara. Du temps des Romains, cette ville prospère était un carrefour commercial important en raison de son positionnement, et également la capitale de Djerba – le site archéologique délimite les contours de cet ancien chef-lieu !
