RVs have most of the comforts of home, including bathrooms, kitchens and a cozy place to lounge. However, entering and exiting RVs can be difficult for many campers. Most of the entry stairs built on RVs are unstable and often hang high over the ground.

Portable Wooden RV Steps with a Platform

YouTube creators RetiredRenewedRerouted created portable, wooden RV stairs with large, platform-style steps. They built the plywood stairs in pieces, so they can easily be taken down and stored in the back of the pickup truck during travel.

The top landing is built from 3 1×6 boards, while the lower steps are built from 2 1×6 boards. These steps cost just over $100 to make, which is significantly cheaper than any premade RV stairs. Watch their video for more details and instructions on creating your own DIY RV steps.

DIY RV Deck

Other RV Step Products

If installing or building RV steps with a platform is too costly or time consuming, there are other ways to make your RV stairs safer and more stable.

RV Step Cover

Most RV steps are made of metal, and easily become slippery in wet and cold weather. Wrapping your RV stairs with step covers, creates better traction for campers entering the RV.

RV steps with platform

This is a type of portable RV step with just one platform at the top and no extra steps. It looks like a mini-table but is designed with retractable legs that are slip-resistant.

A portable RV step with a platform would be convenient if you want a multi-purpose support system; you could use it to walk into your RV or access hard to clean areas on your motor home.

This Stromberg Carlson RV Platform Step is made out of high-grade steel that can support up to 300 pounds. Don’t worry, the steel is coated with a powder finish to prevent rust and corrosion. On top of that, the platform is covered with non-skid tape so you don’t slip when you’re stepping on it.

Besides that, the platform is 24-inch wide which is more than enough space for an adult. If you stretch the legs, it will stand at 8 inches tall; but if you fold the legs, you will reduce the height by half.

The downside? Because it’s made of steel, it weighs about 15 pounds which is heavy compared to plastic or aluminum-made platforms.

If you open the legs, you should have a height of 6.8 inches which should be ideal for most compact RVs. Better yet, the legs and top platform are reinforced with anti-slip plastic and rubber so you don’t fall on a slippery surface.  

However, this platform is about 10 inches wide which could be a deal-breaker for some RV dwellers.

3- RORKEE Wooden Step Stool  

How about a wooden step stool with a maximum weight capacity of 400 lbs? It’s approximately 15.7 inches with a height of 13 inches; this should be compact enough for your RV doorway. Besides that, you could use it as a bedside step stool, cleaning ladder, storage shelf, or a plant stand.

Another thing; the pinewood used to make this step stool is reinforced with a heavy-duty iron frame to improve durability. Surprisingly, it doesn’t weigh more than 10 pounds despite the extra material.

Adjustable Leg RV Platform Steps

How about an RV platform with legs that allow you to adjust the height? They’re often made out of aluminum and the legs are fitted with non-slip rubber; this means they’re ideal for uneven surfaces.

Believe it or not, this Camco RV platform weighs about 8 pounds yet it can support a maximum load of 1,000 pounds. Of course, the manufacturer reduced the weight by using aluminum material that doesn’t rust. In addition to that, the platform is covered with grip tape and the feet are fitted with non-slip rubber.

Talking about the height, you can adjust it from 7.5 inches to 9 inches. On the other hand, the platform is about 19 inches wide which shouldn’t be inconvenient for most people. If you want to store it in your RV, you can fold the feet and cut down the height to 3 inches.

There is just one thing; we think the maximum height could have been improved. For that reason, this platform wouldn’t be convenient for RVs with very high ground clearance. However, it’s possible to use these portable platform steps with adjustable legs with your permanent RV entry stairs.

Thanks to its aluminum material, it weighs about 6 pounds but can hold up to 1,000 pounds of weight. Just when you think it couldn’t get any better, it features a plastic carrying handle, an anti-slip gripper strip, a reflective strip, and anti-slip rubber feet.

Like most RV platforms with adjustable legs, we don’t think this would be suitable for RVs with a ground clearance higher than 15 inches. Then again, this is a multi-purpose platform that can also be used inside your RV.

What’s more, it has a maximum height of 17.5 inches and is strong enough to support up to 300 pounds. Not to mention, it’s fitted with non-slip rubber feet so you don’t wobble when standing.

Its biggest drawback is that it’s made out of plastic; that means you can easily break it if you’re not careful.

With a weight of just 3 pounds, this is the lightest portable RV step on our guide. It’s made of a durable polypropylene material that can hold a maximum weight of up to 300 pounds. Better yet, the material doesn’t degrade or fade over time even if you expose it to direct sunlight.

The maximum height of this folding stool is 9 inches, but you can reduce it to 2 inches for easier storage. On top of that, the step surface is about 12 inches wide and designed with a non-slip surface so you don’t fall.

Its biggest snag? It seems the manufacturer compromised the height to minimize the weight. However, if you prioritize portability over height, there shouldn’t be a reason to complain.

If we have to say it, we think it’s too heavy and bulky compared to other types of portable RV steps. But on the bright side, you don’t need another permanent entry stairs on your RV.

Solid Plastic Box RV Steps

These types of portable RV steps are made from solid plastic with no moving parts. Based on the design and material, solid plastic box RV steps are very durable and multi-purpose.

Here are your best options for solid plastic RV steps:  

Surprisingly, this solid plastic box is made out of plastic but it can hold up to 350 pounds. However, it weighs about 13 pounds; this is by design so it doesn’t get blown away by the wind unless there is a hurricane.

Another cool thing is that it will lift you at least 16 inches off the ground. Similarly, the surface is not slippery even when it’s raining; and it’s 21 inches wide which is more than enough for most people.

The only fly in the ointment is that you can’t fold it to save space. This could be a deal-breaker if you have a compact RV.

This is a multi-purpose portable RV step that can also be used as a stool. It’s about 18 inches wide with a height of about 16 inches from the ground. Talking about portability, it shouldn’t be a problem since it weighs about 5.6 pounds and you can use the cut-out handle to carry it around.

What about the load capacity? Well, it can support just about anyone with a weight of up to 300 pounds. The top platform is also covered with non-slip plastic and the legs are padded with rubber.

However, this stool step is not suitable for an uneven surface. If you have to use it outside your RV, make sure you’ve parked on flat even ground.

All you need to build yourself portable RV steps are 2 pieces of ¾ inch plywood, a back piece, and steps with customized 2 x 2 inch lumbar.  

If you want to build free-standing steps for your RV by yourself, this is what you need to do:

Step 1 . Measure the inches from the ground to your RV door using a tape measure. Once you’ve figured out the measurement; divide it by 7; this should tell you how many steps you will need.

Step 2. Find two pieces of plywood that are at least ¾ inch thick. Make sure the plywood length matches the ground clearance of your RV.

Step 3 . Cut out the plywood with a tread depth of 10.5 inches and the spaces between the steps going upwards should be about 6.5 inches.

Step 4 . Find a back piece that is customized with 2 x 2-inch lumber that you can slide the plywood on both ends. Make sure the back piece of wood measurement is consistent with the width and ground clearance height of your RV doorway.

Step 5 . Once you’ve attached the back piece with the plywood, insert nails into the gap to improve stability.

Step 6 . Cut out the steps to match the width of the back piece attached to the plywood. The length of the steps should also be consistent with the tread depth of the plywood.

Step 7. Add 2 x 2-inch lumbers on the bottom ends of the steps on both sides close to the edge.

Step 8. Slide the steps on top of the plywood; it should be easy after you’ve customized the 2 x 2 inch lumbers.

It depends. Most portable RV steps are cheap with an average price of between $50 to $100. However, permanent RV steps are expensive and could cost as much as $200 to $600.

RV steps are not universal and you choose a unit with a suitable height that matches the ground clearance of your RV. It’s also important to choose RV steps that are consistent with the width of your RV exit door.

In a nutshell, portable RV steps are cheaper, lightweight, and easy to store. Of course, you can also use portable RV steps for other things besides climbing into your RV.

Custom Stairs

Free-standing stairs.

I built these custom stairs for my RV because I needed some free-standing stairs for my travel trailer, and I wanted to demonstrate stringer calculation using mycarpentry.com's Stair Calculator and how I used SketchUp Pro to create 3D drawings of my stairs before starting construction.

The built-in two-step folding stairs attached to our travel trailer provide access to the RV via three steps (9.5, 6.5, and 9.5 inches), totaling 25.5 inches. The built-in steps work fine when we are RV camping in a state park for a weekend, but when we are at our lake property on level ground, I wanted some custom stairs that were a little easier to climb.

Calculating Stair Stringers

I used the Stair Calculator on myCarpentry.com to determine the rise and run and the number of steps I needed to design my stairs. I entered 25.5 inches (the height from the ground to the trailer's threshold) as the Total Rise on the Automatic Stair Calculator , and left all other input fields at their default values, then clicked the Calculate Stairs button.

The result was four equal steps at 6 3/8 inches each. Since the stairs would not be attached to my travel trailer, my stair design became a free-standing wooden step unit with three 6 3/8-inch high steps (totaling 19 1/8 inches). Note: The last 6 3/8-inch step up into the doorway of the travel trailer completes the 25 1/2-inch Total Rise calculation.

When laying out the stringer (above), the height of the first step is always the Typical Step Height minus the Tread Thickness (6 3/8 - 1 1/2 = 4 7/8) so that when treads are attached, the first step equals the height of the other steps.

On this particular stair stringer design, I also subtracted 1 1/2 inches from the back of the top step's Tread Depth so that when I added the 1 1/2-inch thick back supports to the stringers, the total Tread Depth would equal the designed Tread Depth (10 1/2 inches).

Once I determined the specifics of my stair design, I used Sketchup Pro to draw the stringers, back supports, and treads. Then, I assembled the components into a 3D image that I could twist, turn, and flip to see every angle. It helps to visualize the finished product, make any changes that might be necessary, and create a detailed materials list.

Custom Stairs Materials List

The material list (below) shows the actual sizes of lumber I needed to build my custom stairs. I used this list to determine the nominal lengths I needed to purchase from the lumber yard.

• Stringers - 2x12 pressure-treated pine - two @ approximately 37 inches tip to tip
• Brace - 2x12 pressure-treated pine - one @ 19 1/2 inches
• Supports - 2x8 pressure-treated pine - two @ 17 5/8 inches
• Treads - 2x6 western red cedar - six @ 26 1/2 inches
• Deck Screws - 46 @ 3 inches
• Carriage Bolts - 4 @ 1/4-inch x 3 1/2-inches

I determined that, if I was extra careful not to waste any wood, I could cut both stringers and the brace out of one 8-foot pressure-treated 2x12 (I ended up with one inch of 2x12 left over). I bought the shortest pressure-treated 2x8 I could find (8 feet) for the back supports (this was the most waste - it makes me think about all of the 17 5/8 inch scraps I have thrown away over the years). I purchased two 8-foot cedar 2x6s for the treads . After cutting the six of them, there was very little waste. The lumber yard list became:

• 2x12 pressure-treated pine - one @ 8 feet
• 2x8 pressure-treated pine - one @ 8 feet
• 2x6 western red cedar - 2 @ 8 feet
• 3-inch Deck Screws - one small box (containing at least 46)

Custom Stairs - Assembly

First, screw and bolt the 2x12 brace onto the two 2x8 back supports , letting the back supports extend 1 1/2 inches past the ends of the 2x12 brace (as shown in the drawings) using the 3-inch deck screws and 1/4-inch x 3 1/2-inch carriage bolts.

Next, cut the rise and run on the stringers, as specified by the Stair Calculator, and screw them into the ends of the brace using four 3-inch deck screws on each side.

Make sure the two stringers are square with the back support structure , and add three additional screws from the back supports into the ends of the stringers (see Back View diagram below).

Cut the six 26 1/2-inch long 2x6 cedar treads. Check the stringer/support structure for square (once more) and ensure that the lower ends of the stringers are the same distance apart as the upper ends, attached to each end of the brace . Attach the cedar treads using two 3-inch deck screws at each end, letting them hang over the stringers approximately two inches on each side.

Once assembled, I added a chamfer to the front treads of each step. It wasn't a requirement, but I thought it added a little style to these custom stairs. Finally, I sealed the completed stairs with a cedar stain/sealer.

The steps worked better than expected. In addition to making access to our travel trailer easier, the new custom stairs made our house on wheels feel a little more like home.

Double Entry Step

Little House Customs sells a double entry step for our Casitas.  Having an extra step is great for people with mobility issues or if you have a lifted Casita.

The steps are modified by LHC just to fit our Casitas. The first “step” is to cut out the existing step with a reciprocating saw and long metal blade.  After cutting the round steel bar at each end, the old step drops out.

Next draw a line as pictured from below the C-channel to a point 1″ down from the top.  Using a cut-off wheel or saw, make the cuts to remove the excess metal.

The instructions come with a paper template to mark the holes, but I found it tough to get all 6 holes in exactly the right spot.  Next time I’ll locate the rear holes, temporarily install the step and mark the remaining 4 holes before drilling.  This part of the trailer frame is made from thick metal.  I started with 1/8″ pilot holes, and moved up to 3/8″ for the bolts.  Cutting oil makes the job much easier as well as a few extra drill bits.

Finally the step is bolted in with the 6 bolts.  I painted the exposed metal with Rustoleum satin black, which is a great match. 

I’ve heard from some owners that the steps can be slippery when wet, so they add carpeted pads or more grip tape.

These steps are a wonderful addition to your tv. My wife and I had them added you ours as a result of the extra lift added to the unit. They are phenomenal and make entering so much easier as my wife has bad knees.

Thank you very much for the time and effort you took to take pictures, write an article and post on your site. This was a great help for me because you offered more description and photos than the instructions that came with the steps. (I’m mostly pretty handy, but this project was my first experience with a reciprocating saw and an angle grinder.)

I agree that cutting oil makes a huge difference, and it’s good to have extra drill bits. I dulled 1 bit of each size, but had spares. With regard to getting the holes lined up, I didn’t experience any problems. However, I should mention that the instructions call for drilling 25/64″ holes. That probably gave me just enough wiggle room for the bolts to fit pretty easily.

When it came time to prop the steps up so I could insert bolts, I found a very convenient way to raise them. Under each side of the steps frame, I placed one .50 cal. steel ammo can, one of the OSB (chipboard) squares they bolt to the steps for shipping, and an 8″ piece of 2×6. From that position, I only had to lift each side about 1/2″ to start inserting bolts.

How to Measure Morryde Step?

Morryde Step is one of the best choices for RV steps. It’s known for its solid and sturdy step. However, before you order the step, you need to figure out if it fits your application by reading the manual RV steps . Below we put some on how to measure morryde step to help you ensure you’ll have an easy application before you order it. 

First, make sure the unit is level.

Afterwards, measure the height from the top of the threshold to the ground. For a 3-step,  the height will be 30” to 34” high and for a 4-step the height will be 38” to 42”

After you measured the height, time to measure the outside width of the door. The StepAbove with fit doors with 26”, 27”, 30” and 32”.

If you have a screen door with a storm window, remove a small section of the door to allow the steps to lock in place. It’s because these types of doors are typically thicker.

In addition, if the door has a strut to keep it from opening all the way, it also needs to be removed because otherwise the step will hit the door.

Furthermore, if the lip of the door jamb has a trim on the back side, it needs to be notches.

Make sure the skirting below the threshold that surrounds the existing step doesn’t stick out more than ¾”.

Lastly, if you purchase the optional handrail, or if there is anything on the left hand side of the unit closer than 33”, then the handrail will need to be removed. 

How to Build Free Standing Steps With Stringers?

Building a step seems like hard work. However, diy RV step actually is not as hard as it might seem. Below we put some simple and easy steps on how to build free standing steps with stringers. 

Step 1: Prepare The Tools and Supplies

Before starting to build anything, the first thing you need to do is prepare everything you will use. The tools you need to prepare are handsaw, hammer, 16d nails, framing square, pencil, tape measure, circular saw, jigsaw, nail gun, stair gauge, board bender, string line and chop saw.

Step 2: Do the Math

After you have every tools and supplies you need, it’s time to do the math and measurements. The average tread height is 7 inches, while the average tread depth is 10.5 inches. There will be 3 stringers on the stairs and each one is made of a single piece of 2×12 that gives the stairs the strength. The outside stringers will be 36 inches, thus you will need 2 2x6x26 pieces that will be used as a header and footer. The legs need a piece of 2×6 across the bottom to keep them even and spread out. Also, the reads will be made of 2×12’s and an inch overhang on each side of the stringers. For the handrails cut the 2×6 for the baluster.

Step 3: Time to set up

After you figure out the perfect measurement, it’s time to set up the framing square. It will be a lot easier if you have the stair gauges, because they lock into place. However, make sure you don’t put the gauge right on the measurement. Put them a little bit off set to the outside so you can fill the measurement onto the board. Afterwards, it’s time to lay out the stringers. Take the square and put the 7 side at the left and the 10.5 on the right side. Then, put it on the 2×12 as far to the left and mark the outside of the square. Afterwards, take the mark from the 7 side and carry it straight across the rest of the way.

Step 4: Cut the treads

Do not cut past the line if you are cutting the reads with a circular saw . After you cut out everything on the stringers, cut the let in on the leg. Make sure to make the let in the right size for it and the right side of the leg.

Step 5: Nailing

Make sure to put three 16D nails in each 2×6 at the bottom. Then, flip the stringers open after you nail all of them. Afterwards, lay out all the treads you cut on the stringers. Use 3 nails in each stringer when you put the treads on and then add legs onto it. Make sure the let ins face the inside when you put the legs on. When you are nailing them together, nail one side and then nail from the opposite direction wit4 2 nails on each side.

Step 6: Put It All Together

After you get it standing, do the cross bracing on the perpendicular legs. Take a tape measure from one top side to the bottom.  Then, cut the angle for it, or you can take a 2×4 and mark it and cut 2 of them. There are two ways to build the handrails. You can add a piece of wood to the stringer and nail it. Or, cut it into the step and nail it straight to the stinger. The number of balusters you need depends on the number of step you build. If you want to cut the baluster into the step, find the middle of the step and measure half a 2×6 on either side of it. Afterward, take the piece and flush it to the bottom of the stringer.

Step 7:  Finishing

After doing all of the steps above, finally it’s ready to use.

RV Steps For Elderly: How Do You Make RV Steps Safer? (Ramp)

It is the way of life. As you age, you will find it harder to navigate simple things like steps. Your body just can’t lift your feet as high as you used to and that can cause problems when you are trying to get in or out of your RV or trailer.

There are 3 good options and you can use them separately or combine them. One is to build a nice ramp that is not too steep. Another is to put hand rails up for balance and the third one is to build new stairs. All are equally good and can be adapted for your mobility situation.

To find out more about this good and handy project, just continue to read our article. It has the information you want to know about so you can solve this issue for your RV situation. The costs are not that great if you keep it all simple.

How do You Make RV Steps Safer?

RV steps are not known for stability or strength. They are an added feature because many RVs and trailers are a good way off the ground and it is very difficult to leap inside. They are also made of cheap materials that may not last.

The way to make them safer has several options to the process. The first option would be to simply reinforce those steps with more metal pieces. That would make the steps stronger and more stable.

The only drawback to this option would be to find a way to have that reinforcement retract in the same way the steps retract. This is not impossible but it may be a challenge for some RV owners.

The second option would be to build a second set of stairs that go over the top of the original RV steps. You can design these steps in the best way that fits your mobility needs.

The drawback to this option would be storage as those new steps may not fold up as small and be put away like the original steps you are improving. You would have to find a way to fold them up and slide them into a safe storage area to take them with you as you travel.

The third option would be to build a ramp. You can make it incline slightly so that you and other elderly passengers can walk up nice and easily to your RV entrance. Or out of it. You may want to put a landing between the ramp and the door for better navigation.

The drawback to this option would be like the steps. You may not have the best storage space available. Also, for this option and the steps, you have to consider the weight factor.

Probably the best option when it comes to storage and wight would be the last one. You can install handrails that fold against the exterior of the RV or trailer. These come in different sizes so you can pick the best one for the height of the people who are going to use it.

Plus, they are easy to install, strong, and not hard to keep clean. These may not cost that much so picking the right one should fit your budget

RV Steps For Elderly

It really is not hard to build a set of steps that your elderly parents or you and your spouse can use. These same steps can be used for younger RVers when they have medical issues that impede their mobility.

The best way to construct steps for an elderly person is to make sure that the rise of each step is not that high. For some older folks, lifting their legs high is painful and very hard to do.

Keep the rise low but not so low that you are adding too many steps to the design. Then make the step wide enough so that their whole foot can safely stand on it.

Don’t give them too narrow of a step where their foot is hanging over the edge. This could cause navigation problems and miscalculations of where the step is. When you are using wood, 2 x 10s or 2 x 12s are the best for the steps. Risers can be 2 x 4s or 2 x 6s.

Then add in a removable handrail so senior citizens can balance themselves if they need it. The handrail can be made of wood or metal, whichever you prefer. Add some no-slip treads to the steps to make sure your elderly parents, etc., do not slip as they walk up.

Also, make sure the staircase is at least 32 inches wide. You want to have enough room to maneuver on the steps. If you want metal steps, the best thing to do is buy one of the many prefabricated options you will find just about anywhere steps are built or sold.

You can pick the best one that fits your needs and still meet your budget. Most are better built than the metal steps that come with your RV or trailer. Plus, they are or should be easy to attach to your RV, etc.

These metal options come in different lengths, and slopes, and some have handrails already attached to them. These options make your installation task much easier.

RV Ramp For Elderly

There are companies that make ramps that will fit your RV situation. One company makes these ramps that can hold up to 1000 pounds and can be used for wheelchairs, walkers, or scooters.

They are well designed and should be able to roll or fold up to fit in your RV storage compartments or pass-through space. They set up in less than 30 minutes and they can come with a small landing space for maneuverability.

They can also come with handrails to make walking up or down safer. These ramp options are great if you are only staying temporarily at one site before moving on to your next destination.

If you do not like these ramps and you are staying permanently in one spot, then a good wood one will suffice and be very secure. You can design the wood option to meet just about any RV living space and that flexibility gives the wood an advantage over the metal ramps.

It may be cheaper to make one out of wood than to buy a metal one, but compare prices to make sure. Ramps are good for the elderly but they are also good for dogs who do not like to climb stairs or older dogs who have the same mobility issues as humans do.

Using thicker pieces of studs like 2 x 6s is the best support you can use and then 3/4 inch plywood would be best for the floor of the ramp. This project does not take long to build and use carpenter’s glue and drywall screws for added security.

Don’t forget to include a landing for maneuvering. As a reminder, end grains do not hold nails and screws so design your wood ramp accordingly.

Best RV Steps For Elderly

Mor/Ryde International and Lippert make steps for RVs. While they are fairly good steps and well constructed, they seem too steep for elderly people to use. Unfortunately, they happen to be the top 4 of 5 of some top best step lists.

The Quick Products platform step will only be good if your RV or trailer entry way is low to the ground. It is a wide step but it is more like a short stool than a step. It will be good as older folks or those with mobility issues do not have to climb a lot of stairs to get inside the RV.

Stromberg Carlson makes a great step for elderly people. The steps are wide and easy to go up and down plus, the top step is a little larger for obvious reasons. What we liked about one of their options is that it comes with a handrail for stability.

Then Buyers Products makes plastic steps that should hold 350 pounds. These steps are okay if you are on a tight budget but they can be bulky, hard to store and there is no handrail.

Also, the bottom step is wider than the top which may cause some problems for some people. Then there are those steps made by these and other companies that are mere replacements for your current RV step design.

They may be stronger than your current steps but the design is the same and may not work out too well for your RV situation. But that is up to you to determine. They do store away easily as they will fold under your RV or trailer as your original steps do.

As to the best steps for elderly people, there are many different RV situations. One design is not going to work for everyone and the mobility issues you or your parents face may not be accommodated by a one-size-fits all design.

The best steps is the one that solves your entry or exit problem when you have elderly people in your RV with you. These can be made out of wood or metal and you have to decide which design and construction material will be the best in your RV situation.

RV Tips For Seniors

You get to do those things you always wanted to do but couldn’t because you were working, raising kids, and meeting your responsibilities. Here are some tips to help guide your time as you travel:

1. Don’t pull a trailer- pulling a trailer can be hard work and can cause some injuries if you are not careful. It is better to drive an RV as it is easier to drive, set up, level, and use the restroom as well as being able to pull a smaller vehicle.

2. Install a handrail- you may not need it and it is not an insult if it is there. It is just handy to have as some people can trip accidentally at any age going up or down stairs. This is just a safety device when you need it.

3 . Use a headlamp- the strap goes around your forehead and lights up the area without using your hands. Or install a nice over the door light that illuminates a large area. At night it is hard to see and any extra illumination is safe and comes in handy.

4. Purchase a satellite phone- Cell phone service is not universal in the country. You can easily end up in an area that has no cell phone service. The satellite phone makes sure you can contact others when you need to.

However, they can be expensive to use so have one as a backup for emergencies.

5. Safety in numbers- when you can, travel with other RVers going in your direction. You can join a group traveling or create your own. Not only are you safer but you also have more companionship and friends to talk to, etc.

6. Get your American The Beautiful Seniors Pass- this lets you camp at any National Park in the country for free. You have to be over 62 to get one and a lifetime pass only costs $80. An annual pass is $20.

Some Final Words

Building or getting a ramp or steps for your RV is always a good idea. Those original stairs are not that strong or well constructed. It pays to upgrade the steps as you will be using them often.

Check your budget then shop around. You should be able to find or build a set of steps that are better and safer than the ones currently on your RV or Trailer.

Just make sure that your upgrade work does not void your warranties. The RV companies can be fairly picky and look for a variety of reasons to avoid paying for any damage to your RV or trailer.

RV upgrades encompass improvements in areas like energy efficiency, safety, technology and communication, water conservation, storage capacity, and overall aesthetics. The following is a comprehensive checklist of RV upgrades to consider for your brand new or new-to-you RV.

Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries have become a huge hit with RVers, despite their high dollar price.  They require zero maintenance and boast a longer life span. Where a traditional lead-acid battery may need to be replaced every 2 to 3 years, a lithium battery would need to be changed every 10 years.

Insulate your RV to keep the inside toasty during the winter and cool during the summer. Investing in a few RV accessories can do the trick to keep temperatures in your RV optimal and electric usage to a minimum.

For example, window covers can help in warmer climates. Covers are placed on the outside of the windows. Custom skirting is best left to the professionals, but if you like to camp in cold climates, this is a good investment. RV skirting works much the same way as a windbreaker. It keeps the chill out and keeps the warmth inside.

A/C Soft Starter

An A/C soft starter is a device that prevents the momentarily huge spike of AC motors. It is installed in an RV air conditioner’s compressor and permits the appliance to either ramp up the speed or start softly. This action allows RVers to run one or both AC units on fewer amps or smaller generators.

This solves the problem of having a 50 amp RV but only having a 30 amp power source available. Protect your RV electrical system with a surge protector or a more advanced form of it, EMS (electronic management system). These devices prevent damage to your onboard appliances from power surges, such as from lightning strikes or other anomalies.

Nowadays, technology makes the world go round, and our RV wheels continue to roll a bit further down the road.  It is jaw-dropping to witness how it has evolved in such a short time and how it continues to make life on the road more comfortable and safe.  The following are RV upgrades that are sure to add these features and more to your travel adventures.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Properly inflated tires will last longer and are less prone to blow o uts . This RV upgrade could technically be placed under the category of  safety,  however, the mode of detecting tire pressure has experienced leaps and bounds in advancement.

Once measured using a handheld gauge, tire pressure can now be monitored from your phone using Bluetooth. Do you and your traveling crew prefer boondocking in the wilderness over camping at RV parks? Resources like water are very precious and sometimes in limited supply with dry camping.

The amount of time that you can camp without hookups largely depends on your water supply. This supply includes how much freshwater you have available and the capacity of your grey and black water tanks. The following RV upgrades can certainly help prolong your stay in the great outdoors!

Water Tank Monitor System

RV tank sensors are not always accurate. False readings can be due to debris like toilet paper or food particles sticking to the sensors. If you are dry camping and limited on resources, it is a good idea to keep an eye on how much freshwater you still have available and what has been used.

Garnet has devised a product that allows RVers to accurately track their holding tanks usage with the  SeeLevel II Model 709-BTP3 Tank Monitor . The system includes circuit boards or senders that attach to the outside of the different water tanks. A monitor records the fullness of each tank. Recordings can also be read from a smart device like your phone or tablet.

Showerheads and faucets

Making some adjustments to the plumbing can conserve water, specifically with showerheads and faucets. The amount of water that pours out of these parts can be minimized and even improve the streaming effect.

Use aerators on sink faucets to minimize water use but maximizing flow performance. Replace the original showerhead for one that is rated for high pressure without compromising water supply.

Composting Toilet

RV composting toilets eliminate the need for water altogether. Some RVers that have switched to this green latrine have ended up converting their black tank into an additional grey tank.

A composting toilet incorporates the principles of decomposition and, in some toilet models, evaporation to create a cleaner, environmentally-friendly output. The following video from Gone With the Wynns describes how to prep and dump a composting toilet.

Outside Showerhead

If you are wanting to use water outside for things like rinsing off after a dip in the lake or washing your dog, installing an outside showerhead is a convenient RV upgrade. Make sure to install a showerhead with low flow/high pressure to help save on water use.

Increase Storage Capacity

One of the biggest gripes from RVers is that there is never sufficient storage space, and the storage allotted doesn’t quite make for the most functional living. Luckily, there are tons of products on the market that offer a variety of storage choices.

External Mounts 

A big part of RVing is venturing out into the outdoors and experiencing all it has to offer. If you are an avid outdoors sportsman, then it makes sense to take your toys along for the trip. Kayaks, bicycles, fishing equipment, oh my! Space inside an RV is already limited, so in this case, the only other place to find storage is outside the RV.

Mounting these items on their appropriate racks is an option. Another alternative is using a rear/cargo carrier to hold items like water jugs, a generator, or other bulky things you’d prefer not to carry indoors.

Indoor Storage Accessories

A simple Google search of “RV storage ideas” will produce all kinds of articles and blog posts like this one . Creating a space that allows you and your traveling crew to comfortably move around your RV sometimes means making some initial modifications. Installing mundane items like towel racks, Command hooks , spice racks, and extra shelving or cubbies can make a world of difference in your everyday RV living. 

Update the Outdated RV

Older rigs can benefit from these RV upgrades. These DIY projects can completely transform a drab, outdated unit into a sought after dream on wheels. Some RVers purchase brand new RVs and still incorporate some of these upgrades for a more customized, comfortable fit.

New RV Mattress

A standard RV mattress is often a low-grade product meant more for show than comfort. Preserve precious sleep time and unnecessary visits to the chiropractor with a quality mattress or topper.  

The one caveat in this shopping expedition is ensuring that the mattress fits the dimensions of the bed frame. RV mattresses are not the same as standard mattress sizes; they are smaller. A fresh coat of paint can completely change the look and feel of any space. Forgoing the most convenient but rather pricey option of hiring professionals? Join the growing number of RVers that are tackling the tedious task of painting their RV inside and out. 

For interior paint jobs, the RV remodeling gurus at The Flipping Nomad suggest the following, “Clean everything with TSP (Trisodium phosphate), sand the wood, two coats of PPG Gripper primer and two coats of Behr Paint and Primer in One. Don’t sand the walls.”

RV exteriors take a beating on and off the road. UV rays fade colors and decals, hail storms can dent surfaces, and constant exposure to salty roads without proper rinsing off the RV increases the rate of rusting. RV Hometown’s article, How to Paint an RV Exterior , details the process in nine steps, including what products are needed, prepping the RV for coats, and ways to maintain the paint job.

Peel-and-stick Backsplash

A quick and easy way to add some flare to a drab background is with peel and stick backsplash . Peel and stick backsplash works like wallpaper, but it is less time consuming and has a simple application process.

Some backsplashes, like some peel and stick mosaics, come packaged in 10-by-10 inch vinyl tiles and require a wall wipe down before mounting. No grout required. They are typically showcased in kitchens and bathrooms not only for a pop of color, but they make clean-up easy since they can be wiped down and disinfected. 

Peel and stick backsplashes come in many styles, are an inexpensive purchase, and hardly add any additional weight to your RV. Plus, they are removable, so you aren’t married to any one selection.

RV Flooring

Replacing old flooring can improve the look and comfort of your RV, and depending on the condition of the carpet, it can significantly decrease unpleasant smells and possible allergens. This is especially true with used RVs where previous owners smoked inside or traveled with pets.  

Among the types of replacement flooring, NADAguides.com recommends vinyl over carpet, laminate, and hardwood.  “It’s a versatile material, and you can find vinyl tiles, sheets, and planks with simple installation systems. Building your own camper trailer is an easy and budget-friendly way to travel!

Tom is a resourceful Youtuber who shares tips on building DIY projects without spending too much money. He’s already used the tinktube system to create many builds like a greenhouse roof, a studio, and a ladder rack. A few weeks ago, he decided to build a DIY camper trailer. We’ve rounded up the main steps of his project to provide you with a step-by-step building guide!

1. CREATING THE DIY TRAILER CAMPER DESIGNS

Tom’s friend Chad had an old trailer in his backyard which he didn’t use anymore. Tom’s plan: clean up the trailer and use it as the base for his project. This opportunity helped him save a lot of money right from the start, since he wouldn’t have to buy a trailer. If you don’t have already have one waiting in your backyard, you can easily find a used trailer for sale online. It’s a great way to lower the costs of buying a new one!

Tom then worked on the design of the trailer plans. He booked a free 15-minutes call with Esteban to get his advice on the plans he had already drawn and brainstormed ideas on how to improve his project. As Esteban pointed our during their discussion , one of the most convenient aspects of the tinktube building system is that it lets you do a lot of testing. You can build, unbuild, rebuild differently and adjust your project as much as you want during the building process. It makes it easier to get a better idea of the final results, and that’s exactly what Tom did.

2. DECONSTRUCTING THE TRAILER

Once the plans were ready, Tom and his son Trevor started a fun part of the project: the deconstruction of the unneeded and rotten elements of the trailer. They removed the corner brackets and the wood frame, then started on the bottom boards. Since they didn’t need that much thickness in the floor, they chose to remove the trailer’s wood floor. It also reduced the overall weight of the material fixed to the trailer.

Then they took a break and had a quick snow fight.

They got back to work and used the grinder to cut off the parts of the trailer they didn’t need. They took off the front edge so they could make the floor of the new DIY trailer longer than it originally was. When that was done, Tom cleaned up the sharp spots with a wire cup brush, paying special attention to the rusted parts. He hand-sanded and primed the bare metal spots of the trailer where he knew he was not going to be welding.

3. DIY TRAILER CAMPER RETROFITTING

Tom and Trevor used the grinder and welding retrofitting methods to widen and expand the interior space of the trailer. For the extensions, they used metal cut offs from the trailer as well as salvaged and drop-room steel from their local metal store. Once Trevor was done preparing the surface with the grinder, Tom started the welding process. He used the salvaged scrap angle iron to make the frame longer and some of the mesh part from the ramp to create the back end of the trailer.

Tom’s tips from the community: On colder days, preheat the area around the weld joint before starting to weld to reduce the cooling rate of the weld and drive out moisture. It’ll prevent cracking and hydrogen buildup. Tom used a propane torch to do so!

After light sanding the surfaces, Tom and Trevor started the 4-step paint process using rust reformer, primer, appliance epoxy and rubber undercoating. This helped prepare and protect the frame of their DIY travel camper.

When these steps were done, Tom and Trevor had reconfigured the trailer. After a whole lot of cutting, grinding, and painting, it was finally ready to build out! To see our DIYers in action, watch the complete video of the retrofitting process on Youtube.

4. REUSING ALUMINUM COMPOSITE MATERIAL TO MAKE THE FLOOR

Tom received his tinktube order in the mail and sorted out the connectors to get ready to build. He bought some connectors that are designed specifically to work with 3/4 in. electrical conduit , AKA EMT. Tom’s tip when building any project with the tinktube system: He buys a few more fittings than what he expects to use. Having spare parts helps him in case he needs to make changes along the building process.

To make the floor of his DIY trailer camper, Tom used some salvaged aluminum composite material (ACM) destined for the dumpster. He started by washing the surface, then measured and marked down where he was going to cut. He cut the ACM with a circular saw and placed the first piece at the front half of the camper trailer before making the final fitting once it was in place. Then, he measured, cut out the nose of the travel camper and put it in place too.

Tom’s tips: To cut the ACM more precisely, he created a cardboard template.

Once the parts were cut to fit the frame, Tom used EPDM rubber to create a gasket around the edges. Check out the YT video to see how Tom installed the rubber gasket . Tom’s friend Greg then jumped in to explain how to bend ACM using the route and fold method. This method involves cutting through the top layer of metal and then through the plastic. The final result leaves the last layer untouched, so you can then fold it together.

5. ADDING THE TINKTUBE SKELETON TO THE DIY TRAVEL TRAILER

Using 3/4 in. EMT conduit and tinktube’s connectors, Tom and Trevor were ready to start building the upper part of the frame for their DIY camper trailer. Tom created a flat spot on the conduit by using the jigsaw halfway through, then pounding it flat with a hammer. He fixed the conduit to the base frame with screws and placed it at the right angle. He then connected the pieces together using tinktube’s joints and adapters.

Making a few adjustments and changes along the way, Tom kept on building his DIY travel camper project. Tom’s tips when building with tinktube: when you are first placing the connectors on the frame, don’t fix them too tight. Make sure you leave enough space between the connectors and the pipes to move the structure a little bit if needed before tightening the screws. This will help you create a stronger, more stable structure.

6. FIXING A FATAL FLAW IN THE DIY CAMPER

“My concern is your method of smashing the ends of the tubes and how they mount to the chassis. You have introduced facture points that with aerodynamic pressure and vibration will give you issues down the road, so to speak. Not to mention corrosion points…” – s2meister, Youtube follow er

This comment from Tom’s DIY community about his last video got him thinking. He realized his mistake, which he had initially planned to avoid with the use of brackets. He decided to fix the problem before moving along with the rest of the frame build.

He would also use the opportunity to add about an inch to the frame in height, so Trevor is not scrunched over when sitting in the trailer.

Making changes to the DIY camper along the way, thanks to an adaptable building system

So, Tom started working. He took the bolts out and cut out all the tabs. He then got the H8 connectors ready. The H8 connectors have flat ends, which Tom made in a rounded shape for the ones he would use at the nose of the trailer. He used the vice to bend the steel so it would fit perfectly with the shape.

Safety tip: To strengthen the frame, Tom added a through-bolt through the EMT conduit and the joints, at the corners and the top part of the frame. It’s the best way to lock down all the parts together and make sure the structure is as solid as it can be!

Tom then adjusted the angles of the DIY camper trailer frame to make it higher. He took some brackets off and adjusted the angles of the ¾ inch EMT . Changing the angles of the pipes brought another problem: some of the EMT became too long to fit the frame. Once again taking advantage of the evolutive feature of the system, Tom cut the EMT to make some adjustments. After a few cuts here and there, this part of the frame was final!

7. BUILDING THE DIY CAMPER KITCHEN SLIDE-OUT

In this video, Tom switched gears to work on the internal mechanism of the slide-out camper kitchen using the 1-inch tinktube pipe sliding over 3/4 EMT conduit.

First thing he had to do was figure out exactly where the slide for the drawer was going to be fixed on the camper. Once the slide was fixed, he used a tinktube pipe as a base rail: the drawer and everything else could then be mounted to it.

He marked the tube and installed the connectors on it first. He then placed spacers next to where each rivet would go through so they don’t pull the pipe out of alignment. He placed risers on all the tinktube brackets and installed the top rail. He used a tinktube pipe as the back rail, which would slide in and onto a piece of ¾ in’’ EMT conduit.

To stabilize the frame, Tom added a clamp on leg to the end of the slide out, with a rubber foot on the bottom to protect the end of the pipe. When he planned he countertop and the additional kitchen components, Tom decided he would make them removable. He also used a combination of the one-inch tinktube pipe and short sections of conduit as countertop risers. These sections would drop down into the vertical elements of the frame to make the kitchen counter taller.

Tom used these brackets to attach the counter drop down to the tinktube frame so he would be able to snap the surface onto the back rail and remove it easily whenever needed!

8. MAKING FOLDING COTS WITH HINGE BRACKETS

In this video, Tom and Trevor make folding cots using different tinktube hinge brackets. Hinge fittings have a larger opening that allows a plastic bushing to fit inside. The bushing allows the bracket to turn on the pipe. They used the HJ-12 and the HJ-23 brackets.

The goal was to have the cots fold up to the side, with a slide to allow people to get in and out of the trailer more easily and another one to allow Trevor (5.10″, pushing 6″) to lay down and stretch out.

Tom and Trevor assembled the fittings on the frame and added the pipes to create the cots.

Tom created a short foot for one specific end of the cot that would sit on the elevated portion of the floor that covers the kitchen. He arranged for the foot to sit on top of the bar and added a rubber foot to the end of the pipe to protect it.

Then, Tom used the HJ-12 bracket to create a leg that would tuck into the wall. After that, he set up a temporary sleeping surface using a rope so Trevor could climb in the trailer and test out his bed. The verdict: the project was a success!
