How to Disable/Stop iOS 17 Update Notifications on iPhone

author

“How to turn off iOS update notifications in iOS 17? I do not want to be notified when there is an iOS update. Clicking on update later is not enough to get it to stop...another reminder pops up instantly reminding me about auto installs etc. Please tell me there is a way to shut this off. ”

iPhone users may always encounter such annoying situations: When you get used to the current iOS version, a message box reminds you to update iOS to the latest version.

Unfortunately, Apple has not given much thought to users who are not willing to update the iOS system in real-time; there are no "Never Remind" options available.

As a result, users are harassed by the iOS update notification daily. There is no other way but to tick " Remind Me Later ." This will worsen if you accidentally press the " Install Now " button.

Why Does Apple Nag about Software Updates?

Well, it is because Apple wants all its iPhone and iPad users to be on the latest iOS version. This is a good thing for most people since an up-to-date iOS always comes with many new features and bug fixes. Also, it is suitable for Apple to manage the user base.

So, Apple provides a feature named "Automatic Download" to encourage users to update to the latest version of iOS. This will download updates in the background and push you to install it.

It is annoying if there is a constant pop-up for iOS update notifications while doing other tasks. Don't worry. In this article, we will show you 4 troubleshooting tips to turn off iOS 17 update notifications on iPhone. Read on to find out what you can do.

Tip 1. Turn Off Automatic Updates

The Automatic Updates are enabled on iPhone/iPad by default, and you can turn off the option to stop getting iOS update notifications. This won't help with the current update, but it will prevent iOS from downloading updates automatically in the future.

Follow the steps below to turn Automatic Updates off to stop future update notifications:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down to General and select Software Update .
  • Find the Automatic Downloads section, tap on Download iOS Updates , and drag to turn it off.

Tip 2. Delete the iOS Update & Avoid Wi-Fi

You can also delete the downloaded iOS update and avoid Wi-Fi on your iPhone to turn off the iOS update notification. Here’s how to do that:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap on General > Software Update to check if the newest iOS update has been downloaded.
  • Then, go back to General > iPhone Storage and scroll down to find the iOS update downloaded to your iPhone.
  • Tap on it, select Delete Update , and confirm the action in the popup.
  • To prevent the software update from downloading again, disconnect your iPhone from Wi-Fi.

Tip 3. Install Up-to-date Apple tvOS Profile

Another method to turn off iOS update notifications is to install a tvOS beta software profile. This process will enroll your iPhone into the Apple TV beta software program. As a result, when your iPhone automatically looks for iOS updates, it will only find tvOS betas and assume that no iOS updates are available. Follow the steps below:

Step 1 : On your iPhone, launch Safari and go to Beta Profiles to download the tvOS beta configuration profile for Apple TV. You can also download the profile on a computer and AirDrop it to your iPhone.

Step 2 : Once the profile is downloaded, you will be redirected to the Settings app to install it. Click Install in the upper right corner of the interface, enter the screen password and follow the prompts to continue.

install tvos profile

Step 3 : The profile will be installed and require you to restart the iPhone to apply the changes. After the reboot, you can go to Settings > Genera l > Software Update to check if the software is up-to-date.

restart and check

What if you want to upgrade to the newest iOS version? Don’t worry; you can make changes. Go to Settings > General > Profile and find the tvOS beta software profile, then click Delete Profile to delete the installed profile. After that, reboot the iPhone, and the latest version will be detected.

delete profile

Tip 4. Block Apple Updates from Wi-Fi Router

As mentioned above, even though the iOS update has been deleted or disabled from Settings, the iOS updates will still be automatically downloaded when your iPhone is connected to WiFi. Then how do you stop iOS update notifications?

For users who never want to receive the iOS update notification, this option is advisable – blocking the Apple software update domains on Router or Gateway connecting to the internet. The process varies on different Router that you use. Here are the processes on how to do it:

  • Connect your iPhone with the router.
  • Open Safari and enter the router's IP address, which you can find on the bottom or back of the router. You can also call the router's manufacturer for the IP address.
  • Enter the router's password. Also, you can find the default password on the back of the router.
  • Click Advanced Settings > Doman Blocking (or other services that you can block a specific domain), then add the domain of mesu.apple.com or appldnld.apple.com to the block list.
  • Finally, click Apply and Yes .

This will prevent software updates from working entirely and you will see "Unable to Check for Update" when you click "Software Update" on your iPhone.

Above are 4 ways to turn off iOS update notifications on an iPhone or iPad. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. You can choose the most effective one depending on your situation.

Suppose you’ve already updated your iPhone to the latest iOS 17 and are now faced with regret. In that case, you can rely on iTunes or third-party tools like FoneGeek iOS System Recovery to downgrade iOS to an old version. Please note that the downgrade process will erase all the existing data on your device, so you’d better take a backup of your iPhone before doing that.

How to stop macOS update notification pop-ups

Karen Haslam

If you keep seeing notifications to upgrade your Mac software you may be feeling frustrated, it’s helpful of Apple to let you know that an update is available, the company even downloads the update in the background so that the process of updating your Mac needn’t take as long. But these nagging notifications rarely appear at the right time – we usually see them when we arrive at our desk first thing in the morning with a week’s worth of work in front of us.

It wouldn’t be annoying if there was a simple way to dismiss the alert, but the only options you’ll see are Restart or Later, wiht the Later options including: TRy in an Hour, Try Tonight, Remind Me Tomorrow, or Turn on Auto Update.

To be frank, these are less annoying options than those seen on older versions of macOS where you simoly had the choice of Install or Details. Unlike other Notifications there is no option to Dismiss, or Remind me later so you couldn’t just can’t postpone the nagging for an hour.

Luckily there are a few ways to stop seeing these annoying notifications, and we’ll walk you through how to stop seeing “Updates available” or “ready to install” alerts below.

However, a word of warning before we tell you how to make the alerts cease. Your Mac is automatically downloading macOS update in the background – sometimes these updates are important. They may fix a vulnerability or address a bug in the software that could affect how well your Mac work. When you see the notification the software is already downloaded and is ready to install, and generally the process shouldn’t take too long (unless of course it’s a major updated).

The problem is sometimes an update to macOS adds issues and vulnerabilities so you may be thinking you would rather wait and let a few other people install it before you do – just to be sure it isn’t going to cause you a headache. In that case you will want to delay, but you won’t want to never update. So we will cover that scenario too.

How to stop seeing macOS update alerts

It’s actually quite easy to turn off this nagging. How you do so will depend on the version of macOS you are running.

Mojave update

  • Open System Preferences.
  • Click on Software Update.
  • Deselect Automatically keep my Mac up to date

You can also click on Advanced and choose from:

  • Check for updates
  • Download new updates when available
  • Install macOS updates
  • Install app updates from the App Store

If you don’t want updates installing automatically, when you might have a busy day ahead, we suggest making sure that Install macOS updates and Install app updates from the App Store are not selected.

In High Sierra:

  • Click on App Store.
  • Click on the box beside Automatically check for updates to deselect it.

disable safari plugin update notifier

This will deselect all the options. If you would still like the update to be installed, but you would prefer it if Apple did it automatically the following steps should help…

How to stop seeing update alerts – but update anyway

If you’d rather not leave your Mac open to threats you could turn off the nagging messages and have the updates happen automatically. Here’s how:

  • Check the box beside Download new updates when available.
  • Now select the box Install macOS updates.
  • Check the box beside Automatically check for updates – it should have a tick in it as should the four options below that…
  • Now deselect the box beside Download newly available updates in the background.

This will stop the notifications from appearing. However, your Mac will still install macOS updates, along with other app updates and system data files and security updates.

How to stop automatic updates – apart from security updates

You could also choose to stop your Mac from automatically installing macOS updates, but still install security updates.

  • Check the box beside Install system data files and security updates.
  • Deselect Install macOS updates.
  • You can also deselect Install app updates.
  • Now deselect Download newly available updates in the background.

disable safari plugin update notifier

Now your Mac will install system data files and security updates, but it won’t install major updates unless you trigger the update yourself via the Mac App Store or by selecting the Apple menu and choosing About This Mac > Software Update.

How to turn safari website notifications on or off.

If you're a Mac user and you've noticed that Safari sometimes shows you website notifications, you might have wondered how to turn them off, and conversely, on again.

If you're a Mac user and you've noticed that Safari sometimes shows you website notifications, you might have wondered how to turn them off, and conversely, on again. It's very simple and can be accomplished in just a few key presses.

You will see these notifications slide out from the top-right corner like other OS X notifications. They will usually inform you when a website has posted a new article or of breaking news. Usually they disappear within a few seconds but on busy days, you might get one after another.

When you click on the Notification Center icon in the upper-right corner of the OS X desktop, you can see a history of these website notifications, just in case you missed any and, of course, you can remove them one by one if you prefer. We talked at length about the Notification Center in an earlier article , so we recommend you read that if you want to know more about it.

The reason you're even seeing these alerts in the first place is because you likely agreed to allow a website to send you push notifications at one time or another.

Luckily, if you don't want to receive notifications from a particular website (or none at all), you can easily turn them off in Safari's preferences by either clicking on the Safari menu or using the keyboard combination "Command + ,".

Once you've opened the preferences, click on the "Notifications" tab to see the websites that have asked for permission to display alerts in the Notification Center.

You need to go through and click "Allow" or "Deny" next to each one you want to affect. Alternatively, you can click on a single website and then "Remove" it or you can simply "Remove All" of them in one go.

If you want a website to keep showing you notifications, but you would like to change how it shows them, then click on the "Notifications Preferences..." button in the bottom-right corner of the Safari preferences tab.

This will open the Notifications system preferences, which will allow you to go through and change each website's notification style, such whether it displays none, as a banner, or as an alert.

When you go through these notifications, you'll notice that any and all websites that you see in your Safari notifications can also be found here, in fact, using the Notifications system preferences ensures that you have a lot more control over how each notification acts.

As we said, you can choose whether notifications appear as banners, alerts, or not at all. You can also choose to show them on the lock screen and decide how many recent items appear in the Notification Center.

We hope that you found this article useful, especially if you have been noticing website push notifications and weren't sure exactly how to deal with them. If you have an questions or comments you would like to contribute, please leave them in our discussion forum.

How To Disable WordPress Update Notifications (Plugin or Code)

Someone trying to figure out how to disable wordpress update notification

Want to disable WordPress update notifications but not sure where to start?

The update notifications that WordPress provides can be useful for learning about newly available updates and keeping track of automatic updates on your site. However, you might want to disable them to reduce clutter in your WordPress dashboard or email inbox. Or, it might be because you have a different way of managing updates that makes notifications redundant.

Check Out Our Video Guide to Disabling WordPress Update Notifications

Thankfully, you have several options for disabling update notifications in WordPress, including both free plugins and some simple code snippets.

In this article, you’ll learn everything that you need to know about WordPress update notifications and how you can fully or partially disable them on your site.

What Are WordPress Update Notifications?

WordPress update notifications tell you when there are updates available for your site’s core WordPress software, plugins, or themes.

Or, if you’ve enabled automatic updates for some/all of your site, update notifications can also tell you when WordPress has automatically updated the core software , plugins , or themes .

The Different Types of WordPress Update Notifications

WordPress has two main types of update notifications:

  • In-dashboard notifications – these usually tell you when an update is available. In some cases, you also might see in-dashboard notifications after an extension is automatically upgraded.
  • Email notifications – these usually tell you when WordPress has automatically applied an update to the core software, as well as plugins or themes (if you’ve enabled automatic updates for them).

Dashboard update notifications can appear in a few different places. You might see red bubble icons on the Updates , Plugins , or Themes menus in the sidebar. And for some updates (typically only core updates), you’ll also see a dashboard notice in the main interface (which some people find annoying).

The example above assumes that your account has the Administrator user role. However, if you have other users at your site with lower user roles , they might see a prompt like this instead.

On the other hand, WordPress update notification emails will go straight to the email address associated with the Administrator account(s) on your site. Here’s an example:

An example of automatic update notification emails.

Automatic Updates vs Manual Updates

Another important detail that affects which WordPress update notifications you receive is whether you’re using manual or automatic updates.

WordPress has long supported automatic updates for the core software, but it also added native automatic update support for plugins and themes in WordPress 5.5 (released August 2020) .

If you’ve enabled automatic updates, you typically won’t see in-dashboard notifications because WordPress will just automatically apply the updates for you. However, you will usually get email notifications when WordPress has automatically updated something.

To learn more, check out our full guide to WordPress automatic updates .

Should You Disable WordPress Update Notifications?

Update notifications serve an important purpose in WordPress, so you should accurately weigh the pros and cons before going forward with disabling them.

They can alert you when there are new updates available for your site and/or its extensions. This can help you promptly apply those updates, which is important for keeping your site secure and well-functioning .

Or, in the case of automatic updates, they can keep you in the loop about any updates that your site has automatically applied. For example, you might want to check for any issues after WordPress automatically applies an update.

However, automatic update notifications can also add clutter to your WordPress dashboard or email inbox , which is one reason you might want to hide them.

Or, it can be confusing for users with non-Administrator accounts to see them, which is why you might want to disable WordPress update notifications for certain user roles .

You also might use a different method for applying updates that makes update notifications unnecessary and/or redundant. For example, if you’re updating WordPress by pushing changes from your GitHub repository , you might not need WordPress to tell you about updates on your production site.

Even if you disable WordPress update notifications, it’s still essential that you promptly apply updates on your site to keep your site secure and functioning.

If you use Kinsta hosting , you can easily apply updates right from your MyKinsta dashboard . This lets you keep your WordPress dashboard clean by disabling update notifications, while still being able to easily see and apply new updates from MyKinsta . Kinsta can help migrate your site for free from many popular hosts if you want to try it out.

How To Disable WordPress Update Notifications (Code or Plugin)

If you’re confident that disabling WordPress update notifications is the right choice for your site, this section will show you exactly how to get it done.

As is normally the case with WordPress, you have two routes that you can follow to disable WordPress update notifications:

  • You can use a plugin to handle things for you . We’ll share plugins that can disable everything about update notifications or just certain parts, such as only disabling the update notification emails.
  • You can add your own custom code snippets . The advantage of this method is that you get pinpoint control over everything. For example, you could disable update notifications for some user roles but still leave them enabled for admin users.

If you’re not a very technical person, you’ll probably want to stick with the plugin route. But for more advanced users, the custom code option is still fairly painless.

Let’s go through your options.

How to Disable All Update Notifications/Checks With a Plugin

The free Disable All WordPress Updates plugin is the “nuclear” option when it comes to disabling update notifications. This one plugin will disable all update notifications and stop WordPress from even checking for updates in the first place (by disabling the cron job for update checks).

As a result, it’s essential that you manually check for updates and apply them promptly if you use this plugin.

There’s nothing to configure. As soon as you activate the plugin, it will automatically hide all update-related notifications, even hiding them from the Plugins list.

Here’s the site before activating the plugin:

Lots of update notifications before activating the plugin.

And here’s what it looks like after :

All update notifications are hidden. It also adds a small icon to the top toolbar.

You can see that it does add a small icon to the WordPress toolbar to remind you that you’ve disabled automatic updates.

If you want more granular control, you can also consider the free Disable WordPress Update Notifications and auto-update Email Notifications plugin . This plugin performs a similar function but it gives you a settings area to choose whether to disable updates for the core, plugins, and/or themes.

This plugin lets you only hide certain update notifications.

How To Disable Update Notification Emails With a Plugin

If you want a more targeted approach, you can also find free plugins that will leave dashboard notifications but disable all update email notifications.

Here are two simple plugins to do that:

  • Disable Theme and Plugin Auto-Update Emails
  • Disable WordPress Core Update Email

Both plugins are very lightweight and only add a few lines of code (which you can also add manually by following the instructions in the next section).

There’s nothing to configure – just activate them and you’ll stop receiving the applicable update notification emails.

How To Hide WordPress Update Dashboard Notifications With a Plugin

For the last plugin option, let’s look at how to only hide update dashboard notifications, while still leaving the automatic update checks enabled.

There are several plugins that offer varying functionality for hiding all dashboard notices (including updates). Here are 2 popular options to consider:

  • Hide Admin Notices – adds a toggle button that lets you easily show/hide all dashboard notifications.
  • Admin Notices Manager – moves all admin notices to a separate admin notices panel, including update notifications.

For example, here’s what the Hide Admin Notices plugin looks like – it hides the notifications from the dashboard but lets you click the Show Notices toggle to still see them.

An example of the Hide Admin Notices plugin.

How To Disable Update Notifications With Code

If you don’t want to use a plugin, you can also disable update notifications by using your own custom code snippets .

We’ll show you example code snippets for a few different situations:

  • Disabling update notification emails.
  • Hiding dashboard update notifications for all users.
  • Hiding dashboard update notifications for certain user roles.
  • Fully disabling update checks.

Disable WordPress Update Notification Emails With Code

To disable update notification emails, you can add some or all of the following filters, depending on the types of emails that you want to disable.

You should add these code snippets to the functions.php file in your child theme or via a plugin like Code Snippets .

Disable core update emails :

Hide Update Notifications In Dashboard

To hide update notifications in your dashboard, you can remove the update_nag action using code. This won’t hide the update notification bubbles, though.

To hide these update notifications for all users (including admins), add the following code snippet to the functions.php file in your child theme or via a plugin like Code Snippets.

The code snippet to hide update notifications for all users.

Another option would be to leave update notifications for Administrator users but hide them for all other user roles. To accomplish this, you can modify the code like this:

Disable All Update Checks

If you want to learn how to completely disable automatic update checks in the first place, you can read our full guide to WordPress automatic updates .

To help you keep on top of your site’s updates, WordPress offers update notifications in your dashboard and via email.

In some situations, you might want to disable some or all of these update notifications. You can accomplish this using the plugins or code snippets that we detailed above.

However, you should remember that it is still important to promptly apply updates on your site, especially security updates. So if you do disable WordPress update notifications, you’ll want to make sure you have another system in place to ensure that you’re able to apply updates when needed.

Keeping WordPress plugins up-to-date is generally a good practice, as updates often bring new features, improvements, and crucial security patches. However, there are instances where you might want to prevent a specific plugin from updating. This could be due to compatibility issues, custom modifications, or other reasons.

In this blog post, we’ll explore how to programmatically disable updates for a specific WordPress plugin. This method gives you more control over your site’s plugin management, especially when automatic updates aren’t suitable for your setup.

The Code Snippet

To disable updates for a specific plugin, you can use the following code snippet in your WordPress site:

How It Works

  • Locating the Plugin’s Main File : First, you need to find the main file of the plugin you wish to disable updates for. This is usually found in the plugin’s folder in the format ‘plugin-folder/plugin-file.php’.
  • Adding the Function : Place the function in your theme’s functions.php file or in a custom site-specific plugin. This function hooks into WordPress’s site_transient_update_plugins filter, which is used to check for plugin updates.
  • How the Function Operates : The function checks the list of plugins due for updates. If it finds the specified plugin ( $plugin_to_disable ), it removes it from the update list. This effectively prevents WordPress from displaying update notifications for that plugin.

Things to Consider

  • Compatibility Issues : Disabling updates can lead to security vulnerabilities and compatibility issues, especially if the plugin is crucial for your site’s functionality or security.
  • Update Notifications : While this method stops updates, it doesn’t remove the plugin from the WordPress.org repository. The plugin will still be listed there, but your site won’t notify you of updates.
  • Use With Caution : This approach should be used judiciously. Regular updates are important for the health and security of your WordPress site.
  • Temporary Solution : Consider this a temporary measure. If you’re waiting for a compatibility fix or preparing your site for a major update, this method can be helpful.

Controlling plugin updates gives you greater management over your WordPress site, especially when dealing with custom configurations or compatibility issues. However, it’s essential to weigh the benefits against potential security risks. Always aim to keep your plugins updated whenever possible, and use this method responsibly to maintain the overall health and security of your site.

Remember, this approach is for advanced users comfortable with editing their site’s code. If you’re unsure, it’s always wise to consult with a professional.

Disabling WordPress plugin and theme update notifications

Hello. Though belatedly I wish a great Year for everybody.

When installing WordPress in the server, we enabled the notifications of plugin and theme updates. However, after some considerations, we want the automatic plugin and theme update enabled but do not need a notification every time one of them is updated successfully.

Ideally (suggestion), the notifications should be sent by WordPress only if there is any issue with the plugin and theme update. We want to disable the update notification while keeping the automatic updates enabled. However, we could not find where to do it inside the WordPress dashboard. Any advice is welcome! 🙂

The page I need help with: [ log in to see the link]

I found an article that details different ways of disabling update notification emails > https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-disable-automatic-update-email-notification-in-wordpress/

Please check it out and see if it works for you. I have not used any of the methods, so I recommend testing them out first.

@jndungu thank you, worked perfectly. 🙂

@itmonitor You are welcome. Happy to hear that my suggestion worked for you.

WordPress – How to disable update notification for individual plugins

Most of the WordPress plugins get updated on regular intervals so whenever you log in to your WordPress admin panel, you will get the notification for updates of plugins, themes or core files. Generally, developers do the changes in the WordPress plugin if the hook or filter doesn’t work so disabling updates for a specific plugin in WordPress is helpful to them.

Sometimes you want to do some changes in plugin functionality or style so you have to modify plugin core files so once you update the plugin, your changes will be lost. At that time, it is necessary for you to disable updates for the specific plugin in WordPress so if any other developers are working on your site can’t update the code otherwise, your code will be lost.

Hence, You can disable specific plugin update notifications. So, here is how you can disable update notifications for a specific plugin in WordPress.

You need to add a few lines of code into your functions.php file or wp-config.php file to disable updates for a specific plugin in WordPress:-

Disable updates for a specific plugin for WordPress is kind of blocking the Plugin Update. Above code snippet called the filter site_transient_update_plugins in which unset the plugin from update list and this is selectively to disable updates for a plugin in WordPress.

Here, in the above example replace the value in response to your desired plugin’s directory file path and the main PHP file name. You can unset as many plugins you want when you want to stop a plugin from updating. If the code was not working for you, write in the comment section and I would be more than happy to find a solution for you.

Unwanted Safari notifications

My safari is acting weird. It is sending me, on my mac, notifications from strange pages.

I have never visited this kind of pages or read similar articles or content.

How can i stop this?

You can stop Safari from sending you Notifications by using Safari's Settings (or Preferences ) menu > Websites > Notifications. Select and remove each website that has requested to send you Notifications.

If you do not want websites to even ask you to permit Notifications then de-select the "Allow websites to ask for permission..." box.

I cannot think of any reason I would want such harassment.
