Where is Central Park Located on Oasis of the Seas?

Oasis of the Sea Central park

Central Park on Oasis of the Seas is located on Deck 8 of the ship. This deck is dedicated mostly to Central Park, with the exception of the forward part which houses some staterooms, and the aft area that leads to the Music Hall.

The park is open-air, creating a unique outdoor experience at sea.

What is a Central Park View Balcony on Oasis of the Seas?

A Central Park View Balcony Stateroom on Oasis of the Seas is a unique type of cabin that features a balcony facing the interior of the ship, overlooking the Central Park area.

These staterooms are the first inward-facing balconies introduced on cruise ships, offering views of the park’s greenery and activities. Guests in these rooms can enjoy people-watching and the lively atmosphere of Central Park.

However, it’s important to note that these balconies may experience more noise compared to ocean-facing ones and have less privacy, as people in opposite staterooms or in the park can see into these balconies.

Central Park View Balcony vs. Ocean View Balcony on Oasis of the Seas?

Oasis of the Sea Central park Balcony View

Choosing between a Central Park View Balcony and an Ocean View Balcony on Oasis of the Seas offers two distinct perspectives and experiences. The Central Park View Balcony staterooms offer an inward-facing view overlooking the lively and green Central Park area.

These rooms are great for guests who enjoy people-watching and being part of the ship’s internal activities. However, they might be noisier and offer less privacy, as the balcony faces other rooms and the public park area.

In contrast, Ocean View Balcony Staterooms provide a more traditional cruise experience with outward-facing views of the sea.

These rooms offer a peaceful, private setting with the ever-changing ocean landscape as your backdrop, ideal for those who seek tranquility and a connection with the open sea.

These balconies are quieter and more secluded, offering a serene retreat from the ship’s busier areas.

Ultimately, the choice depends on your personal preference for either a vibrant, social setting or a calm, ocean-focused experience. Both options have their unique charms and cater to different cruise experiences on Oasis of the Seas.

Personally, we’d pick an ocean view but this comes down to a matter of preference as there isn’t a  bad cabin on Oasis of the Seas .

In Conclusion…

Central Park is a serene haven aboard the Oasis of the Seas, inviting you to a tranquil experience amid its lush greenery. Dine at Park Cafe for a light meal in a warm and casual setting during the day.

As evening sets in, the space transforms with live music, creating an ambiance that’s both enjoyable and soothing.

It’s a welcomed retreat from the high energy of other areas like the Royal Promenade and Boardwalk or the bustling pool decks.

Taking time to unwind in this verdant environment will leave you feeling recharged. Don’t miss out on experiencing the unique charm of Central Park during your cruise.

Oasis of the Seas Central Park

The Central Park neighborhood on the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas cruise ship is a beautiful outdoor park area located midship on deck 8. Flanked on both sides by 324 inward-facing balcony staterooms overlooking the park, shady Central Park features winding pathways, flower gardens, quiet seating, and tropical trees.

Much like the Boardwalk neighborhood, Central Park is lined with shops, restaurants, and bars. However, unlike the Boardwalk, most of these Central Park venues are upscale and geared towards adults rather than families.

The shops include a Coach store, art gallery, and portrait studio. The restaurants include Chops Grille, upscale and exclusive 150 Central Park, Giovanni's Table Italian restaurant, and the Park Cafe.

Guests can find a drink at the outdoor Trellis Bar and Vintages wine bar is next to Giovanni's Table. Rising Tide, an innovative moving bar, links Central Park and the Royal Promenade on deck 5. The two-deck sparkling Dazzles night club overlooks the park.

A Closer Look at Central Park on Utopia of the Seas - Royal Caribbean's Newest Cruise Ship

Royal Caribbean, Utopia of the Seas, Central Park, Izumi in the Park

Utopia of the Seas made her triumphant debut yesterday, taking guests to the Caribbean on her inaugural sailing for the "World's Biggest Weekend". Utopia is the 6th ship in the Oasis Class, and is the biggest yet, weighing in at 236,473 gross registered tons, and carrying a max capacity of 5,668 passengers. She continues the Oasis tradition of being divided into several distinct neighborhoods- The Royal Promenade, The Boardwalk, The Pool & Sports Zone, Entertainment Place, Youth Zone, Vitality Spa & Fitness Center, the Suite Neighborhood, and the beautiful Central Park.

Central Park is an experience like no other, something that has never been seen on a cruise ship before the Oasis Class. This open-air neighborhood has thousands of live plants planted throughout, and offers several dining, bar, and retail venues. The goal is that you feel as though you are strolling through your favorite city park, can stop for a bit of shopping or a bite to eat, or enjoy the fresh air and sounds of the park as you sit pre-dinner cocktails with friends. The sound system hidden throughout the space plays sounds of nature such as birds singing, and frequently you will find a live musician playing in the middle of the park, contributing to the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere of the space. Here are all the venues you will find in Central Park on Utopia of the Seas :

150 CENTRAL PARK | 150 Central Park is a sit-down, specialty dining venue has a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients that are harvested at the peak of their season for the ultimate freshness and flavor. Menu highlights include: crispy Berkshire pork belly served with with a port reduction over a parsnip puree, braised short rib with with a creamy polenta and crispy onions, halibut with a saffron and truffle hollandaise, and the fried cheesecake for dessert is a best-seller.

CHOPS GRILL | Chops Grill is a classic steakhouse, and Royal Caribbean fan favorite. This venue is found on all Royal Caribbean ships, and is located in Central Park on Utopia . Here you will find offerings such as strip steak, ribeye, filets, and rack of lamb. There are an array of different shareable sides to choose from including mac and cheese, gruyere tater tots, and a variated of roasted vegetables. This is a fan favorite for good reason, with an expansive prix-fixe menu that will delight everyone at the table.

IZUMI HIBACHI & SUSHI | Another Royal fan favorite, Izumi Hibachi & Sushi offers a delicious Japanese menu. Inside you will find traditional seating, as well as seating around the teppanyaki tables for those who have reserved the teppanyaki experience (this tends to sell out quickly as it is very popular). Enjoy delicious rolls including the seared tuna tataki roll, crispy tuna roll, and other classics. For dessert the mochi trio is the way to go with flavors of mango, strawberry, and chocolate.

IZUMI IN THE PARK | This venue made a triumphant debut on Icon of the Seas , and was so popular, they brought it back for Utopia.   Located next to the Izumi sit-down restaurant, there is a takeout window in the middle of the park, allowing guests to enjoy sushi and bubble cone ice cream, grab-and-go style, as late as 10pm! This is a great option for those who wish to enjoy their favorite Izumi rolls daily without having to make a reservation.

PARK CAFE | The Park Cafe was created with easy but delicious grab-and-go items. Enjoy fresh pressed paninis, soups and ready-made salads, and of course the famous Kümmelweck roast beef sandwich! You can dine at any of the tables inside, or outside for beautiful views of Central Park.

RETAIL | Pop into the luxury retail shops located in the Park, and enjoy duty free shopping while at sea.

RISING TIDE BAR | This fun venue actually moves between the Royal Promenade on Deck 5, and Central Park on Deck 8. Sit back, order your favorite drink, and have fun traveling between decks in this one-of-a-kind bar.

TRELLIS BAR | This beautiful bar is located in the heart of Central Park, and is the perfect spot for drinks before heading to dinner at Izumi, 150 Central Park, or Chop's Grill.

A Closer Look at The Boardwalk on Utopia of the Seas - Royal Caribbean's Brand New Ship

My favorite spot on the world's largest cruise ship was its 'Central Park,' a lush garden home to over 20,000 plants

  • Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas is the world's largest cruise ship , and has seven different "neighborhoods."
  • One of these neighborhoods is called Central Park , and is indeed a park with more than 20,700 lush tropical plants.
  • There's even a landscape specialist with a team of three horticulturalists onboard to maintain the park.
  • Quiet, shaded, and full of little benches and paths, as well as al fresco dining, Central Park was one of my favorite spots on the ship.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Insider Today

It's hard to convey just how enormous the world's largest cruise ship is.

Even numbers don't quite do it justice (it is 1,188 feet long, and 215 feet wide in case you were wondering). To put it into perspective, the ship is only 62 feet shorter than the Empire State Building, and can hold almost 9,000 people — guests and crew — on busy weeks. That's not much smaller than the population of Sedona, Arizona.

Every time I turned a corner on this giant ship , I was flummoxed by a new and unexpected sight . A carousel. An ice skating rink. Not one but two rock climbing walls, a zip line, mini golf, and two surf simulators. Even a Starbucks .

But one of the cruise's most impressive attractions — and a personal favorite of mine — is the lush park on board.

Named after the most famous park in the country, Central Park, it is one of the Symphony of the Seas' seven "neighborhoods," and boasts over 20,000 plants. Keep scrolling to see what a park on a ship in the middle of the ocean is like.

The Symphony of the Seas has seven "neighborhoods:" Boardwalk, Entertainment Place, Pool and Sports Zone, Youth Zone, Royal Promenade, Vitality Spa and Fitness Center, and Central Park.

In fact, there's a "landscape specialist" on board who works with a team of three horticulturalists to keep the plants alive.

Obviously, growing plants on a ship is not the same as growing plants on land.

Water and sunlight requirements, irrigation, draining, even the slopes of the decks were all factors taken into consideration when designing the park.

Speakers hiding in the plants create soothing nature sounds: you'll hear crickets chirping, birds trilling, and frogs croaking.

There are also plenty of restaurants, like Chops Grille, Jamie's Italian, Park Café, 150 Central Park, and Vintages wine bar. Many have al fresco seating.

Central Park was one of my favorite spots on the ship, probably because it didn't feel like being on a ship at all.

I spent many mornings drinking my coffee al fresco at Park Café.

Sitting in the park was a bit of an odd sensation, however.

Although the park is outside and I could see the sky, it's so deep within the ship that it didn't truly feel like being outside.

And feeling the ship's rocking while sitting among trees and bushes was bizarre to say the least.

BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Nearly 800 people lined the shoreline at Port Canaveral ’s Jetty Park today to bid “Bon Voyage” to Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas as she embarked on her first revenue sailing from Port Canaveral.

“The World’s Biggest Wave Out” party was hosted by the Port for the local community, campground guests and beachgoers to enjoy festive, family-fun afternoon with a DJ, bubble machine, fun giveaways, and homemade ice cream and hot dogs provided by local vendors.

The Friday afternoon cruise ship departure delighted the multitude of park guests with a special parade of ships that included Carnival Cruise Line’s Glory, Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas, and Disney Cruise Line’s Wish.

The brand-new Utopia of the Seas was led out of Port by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Marine Unit, Canaveral Fire Rescue’s Fireboat 2 with her impressive water cannon display and flanked by two of the Port’s resident tugs, Christine S from E.N. Bisso & Sons Towing and the St. Johns from Marine Towing of Port Canaveral.

“Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas is one of the most anticipated new cruise ships in the industry,” stated Capt. John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO.

“We’re proud to be Royal Caribbean’s partner for this industry first experience and excited to support the strong market demand for short itineraries. Our team is ready and committed to providing high-quality experiences to help all cruise guests launch their memorable journeys from our Port.”

Port Canaveral welcomed home Royal Caribbean International’s new Utopia of the Seas when she arrived at Port Canaveral on July 11. Saturday marked the maiden voyage for passengers, offering the ultimate short getaway with 3-night weekend and 4-night weekday vacations that will include a visit to Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private island in The Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Port Canaveral is homeport for two of the three largest ships in the world. With Utopia’s arrival, she joins Royal Caribbean International’s sister ships Wonder of the Seas and Adventure of the Seas. A fourth Royal Caribbean ship, Voyager of the Seas, will homeport at Port Canaveral beginning November 26.

Over the past year, Port Canaveral has prepared for the arrival of Utopia with an expanded parking capacity of approximately 1,000 additional spaces at Cruise Terminal 1 (CT1) to cater to guests arriving by personal vehicles.

Utopia of the Seas, the ultimate short getaway, was built at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, before embarking to Port Canaveral in Florida. Utopia features more than 40 ways to dine, drink and celebrate, across eight themed neighborhoods; entertainment across air, ice, water, and stage; five pools, two casinos, and more at Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

The new vacation also features the signature FlowRider surf simulator, a 10-story zip line, and The Ultimate Abyss, the longest dry slide at sea at 259 feet.

An Alaska tourist spot will vote whether to ban cruise ships on Saturdays to give locals a break

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Each year, a crush of tourists arrives in Alaska’s capital city on cruise ships to see wonders like the fast-diminishing Mendenhall Glacier . Now, long-simmering tensions over Juneau’s tourism boom are coming to a head over a new voter initiative aimed at giving residents a respite from the influx.

A measure that would ban cruise ships with 250 or more passengers from docking in Juneau on Saturdays qualified for the Oct. 1 municipal ballot, setting the stage for a debate about how much tourism is too much in a city that is experiencing first-hand the impacts of climate change. The measure would also ban ships on July 4, a day when locals flock to a downtown parade.

The “ship-free Saturdays” initiative that qualified this week will go to voters unless the local Assembly enacts a similar measure by Aug. 15, which is seen as unlikely.

Juneau, accessible only by water or air, is home to the Mendenhall Glacier, a major draw for the cruise passengers who arrive on multi-story ships towering over parts of the modest downtown skyline. Many residents of this city of about 32,000 have concerns about increased traffic, congested trails and the frequent buzz of sight-seeing helicopters transporting visitors to the Mendenhall and other glaciers.

Image

Deborah Craig, who has lived in Juneau for decades, supports ship-free Saturdays. Craig, who lives across the channel from where the ships dock, often hears their early-morning fog horns and broadcast announcements made to passengers that are audible across the water.

The current “overwhelming” number of visitors diminishes what residents love so much about Juneau, she said.

“It’s about preserving the lifestyle that keeps us in Juneau, which is about clean air, clean water, pristine environment and easy access to trails, easy access to water sports and nature,” she said of the initiative.

“There’s this perception that some people are not welcoming of tourists, and that’s not the case at all,” Craig said. “It’s about volume. It’s about too much — too many in a short period of time overwhelming a small community.”

The current cruise season runs from early April to late October.

Opponents of the initiative say limiting dockings will hurt local businesses that rely heavily on tourism and could invite lawsuits. A voter-approved limit on cruise passenger numbers in Bar Harbor, Maine, another community with a significant tourism economy, was challenged in federal court.

Laura McDonnell, a business leader who owns Caribou Crossings, a gift shop in Juneau’s downtown tourist core, said she makes 98% of her annual revenue during the summer season.

Tourism is about all the “local businesses that rely on cruise passengers and our place in the community,” said McDonnell, who is involved in Protect Juneau’s Future, which opposes the initiative.

Some schools recently closed due to factors including declining enrollment, while the regional economy faces challenges, she said.

“I think that as a community, we really need to look at what’s at stake for our economy,” she said. “We are not in a position to be shrinking our economy.”

The cruise industry accounted for $375 million in direct spending in Juneau in 2023, most of that attributable to spending by passengers, according to a report prepared for the city by McKinley Research Group LLC.

After a two-year pandemic lull, cruise passenger numbers rose sharply in Juneau, hitting a record of more than 1.6 million in 2023. Under this year’s schedule, Sept. 21 will be the first day since early May with no large ships in town.

The tourism debate is polarizing, and the city has been trying to find a middle ground, said Alexandra Pierce, Juneau’s visitor industry director. But she noted there also needs to be a regional solution.

If the Juneau initiative passes, it will impact other, smaller communities in southeast Alaska because the ships, generally on trips originating in Seattle or Vancouver, Canada, will have to go somewhere if they can’t dock in Juneau on Saturdays, she said.

Some residents in Sitka, south of Juneau, are in the early stages of trying to limit cruise visitation to that small, island community, which is near a volcano.

Juneau and major cruise lines, including Carnival Corp., Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Group, agreed to a limit of five large ships a day, which took effect this year. They more recently signed a pact , set to take effect in 2026, seeking a daily limit of 16,000 cruise passengers Sundays through Fridays and 12,000 on Saturdays.

Pierce said the overall goal is to keep total cruise passenger visitation around 1.6 million, and to even out daily numbers of visitors that can spike to about 18,000 on the busiest days. Peak days in the past have felt “a bit suffocating,” she said. Juneau traditionally has been the most popular cruise port in the state.

A number of projects around Juneau are expected to help make existing cruise numbers feel less impactful. Those include plans for a gondola at the city-owned ski area and increased visitor capacity at the Mendenhall Glacier recreation area, she said.

Renée Limoge Reeve, vice president of government and community relations for the trade group Cruise Lines International Association Alaska, said the agreements signed with the city were the first of their kind in Alaska.

The best strategy is “ongoing, direct dialogue with local communities” and working together in a way that also provides a predictable source of income for local businesses, she said.

Protect Juneau’s Future, led by local business leaders, said the success of the ballot measure would mean a loss of sales tax revenue and millions of dollars in direct spending by cruise passengers. The group was confident voters would reject the measure, its steering committee said in a statement.

Karla Hart, a sponsor of the initiative and frequent critic of the cruise industry, said the threat of litigation has kept communities from taking steps to limit cruise numbers in the past. She was heartened by legal wins this year in the ongoing fight over the measure passed in Bar Harbor, a popular destination near Maine’s Acadia National Park.

She believes the Juneau initiative will pass.

“Every single person who is going to vote has a lived experience and knowledge of how the cruise industry impacts their lives,” she said.

This story corrects a quote from Pierce about peak days.

Best European cruises: 6 ships that stand out across the pond

Ashley Kosciolek

Editor's Note

Prospective cruisers often ask me what the best European cruises are, but that question is difficult to answer because Europe is massive. It encompasses some 45 countries and includes such cruise regions as the Mediterranean, the Baltic and Northern Europe, the British Isles and the Canary Islands.

While cruisers are spoiled for choice in this part of the world, it can be difficult to know where to begin when researching voyages.

To help you out, I've narrowed down my favorites for the best cruises to Europe for different types of travelers, including families, couples and solo travelers.

Note: Pricing was accurate at the time of publication. Fares are subject to change without notice.

Best European cruises for families: Disney Fantasy

cruise ship with park in the middle

Disney Cruise Line is great for kids; if you're planning a cruise in Europe with children, Disney Fantasy is a logical choice for the best European cruise for families.

Character meet and greets, awe-inspiring nighttime entertainment and fun dining experiences mean your kiddos will never be bored. The ship's stellar kids clubs go above and beyond with a likeness of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and Star Wars flight simulators. They can even go to the Marvel Super Hero Academy, where kids can train to become protectors of the universe.

Disney Fantasy is not the line's newest ship, meaning it's a bit more manageable in terms of both size and price. It's not the oldest, either, so families will find more things to do on board than on the line's smallest vessels.

Ashore, Disney's family-friendly excursions will take you to laze on the beach, explore museums and learn about history.

In May 2025, Disney Fantasy will begin three- to 12-night cruises to Western Europe, the British Isles and the Mediterranean . Cruise fares start from $362 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. You can visit ports like Glasgow, Scotland, and Liverpool, U.K., on cruises from Southampton, U.K.; you can also visit Florence and Rome (Civitavecchia) on Barcelona sailings.

Best European cruises for couples: Viking Star

cruise ship with park in the middle

If you're a couple seeking an upscale Mediterranean or Northern Europe experience that offers real value and a chance to reconnect with your partner, look no further than Viking .

The line's Viking Star sails various Northern Europe and Mediterranean itineraries, and the European ports the ship visits offer plenty of opportunities for you to feel the love. Take a pizza-making class together in Italy , or get a little giggly at a wine tasting in Greece.

Viking includes at least one free shore excursion per port in its fares. That means you can wander Europe's romantic cobblestone streets, hand-in-hand with your sweetie, without paying a penny extra.

While fares aren't the cheapest you'll find, you'll get a lot for your money. In addition to the tours, Viking includes Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and beer and wine with lunch and dinner in its prices.

Plus, all cabins on Viking's ships have balconies, which is great if you want some fresh air but feel like keeping to yourselves. Complimentary room service is available 24/7, so you can order dinner to your cabin for a charming alfresco dining experience for two.

Want even more ways to pamper yourselves together? Check out the phenomenal thermal suite in the ship's spa ; they offer saunas and steam rooms, tile loungers and aromatherapy rooms at no extra charge. Or, splurge on a couples massage, which will leave both of you feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Even better, Viking ships don't allow children on board. It's a great excuse for you and your significant other to rekindle the romance without other passengers' kids ruining the vibe.

Through 2025, Viking's Northern Europe and Mediterranean sailings range from seven to 28 nights. The ship visits ports such as Barcelona; Rome (Civitavecchia) and Venice, Italy; Athens and Santorini, Greece; Istanbul; Bergen, Norway; and Reykjavik.

Fares start from $400 per person, per night for a balcony cabin on a Western Mediterranean itinerary.

Best European cruises for seniors: Seabourn Sojourn

cruise ship with park in the middle

If you're a senior traveler who loves great food and excellent wine, one of the best luxury European cruises you can book is a cruise to the Canary Islands on Seabourn 's Seabourn Sojourn.

The small ship carries fewer than 500 passengers, and you won't find raucous parties or tons of children. Instead, you'll be met with stellar service, gourmet food, a room with a view (all cabins have at least a window), and relative peace and quiet. The long itineraries are ideal for wealthier passengers with lots of time to travel.

Seabourn Sojourn's voyages to the Canaries span 12 to 26 days and visit the islands of La Palma, Gran Canaria and Madeira; they also visit Lisbon. Fares start from $314 per person, per night for a suite on a March 2025 sailing. Extras like Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol (including the in-room minibar) are rolled into the fares.

Best for solo cruisers: Norwegian Epic

cruise ship with park in the middle

When Norwegian Epic debuted in 2010, it introduced Norwegian Cruise Line 's first cabins for solo travelers. Designed with single beds and a bit less square footage, these so-called studio cabins are clustered around an exclusive lounge reserved for solos. Special activities allow folks traveling alone to mingle and make new friends.

Since Norwegian Epic began sailing, nearly all of the line's new ships — Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva — have been built with accommodations for one , which don't charge occupants a single supplement. However, it's Norwegian Epic that has a presence in the Mediterranean and Greek Isles , offering solo cruisers a chance to explore Europe on a ship with cabins just for them.

On board, passengers have plenty of choices for activities and dining. In addition to the usual cruise-ship offerings — pool games, dance parties, game shows, trivia and movie screenings — Epic offers many fun diversions. Options include an adults-only beach club at the back of the ship, spa treatments, a bowling alley and even gaming lessons (the latter three for a fee).

The vessel sails six- to 12-night voyages, round-trip from Rome (Civitavecchia), calling on ports that include Naples and Florence (Livorno), Italy; Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza, Spain; Marseille and Cannes, France; and Mykonos and Santorini, Greece, among others. At press time, studio fares started at $161 per night for a 12-night sailing. The voyage includes a two-night pre-cruise stay with tours of Rome and features port calls on Santorini, Mykonos and Corfu, Greece; Valletta (Malta); and Sicily, Naples and Florence (Livorno), Italy.

Best European party cruises: Virgin Voyages' Resilient Lady

cruise ship with park in the middle

If your Europe bucket list includes the Greek islands, you don't want to sail with children and you enjoy a lively party atmosphere, you can't go wrong with Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady. The third ship in the line's fleet, Resilient Lady offers some of the best cruises to the Greek Islands and other places in the Mediterranean.

Expect a casual vibe where passengers dress up like mermaids, crew dress up like drag queens and performers look like real people. Toss in an onboard tattoo parlor, a food court ( it's not a buffet ), free fitness classes and an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on the ship; you get a product that has turned the cruise industry on its head.

Wild nights on board include raucous and sometimes raunchy theater shows, impromptu dance parties and Scarlet Night — a poolside bash reminiscent of a rave where everyone's dressed in red. If you attend enough daily activities, you might even be invited to a secret nighttime tour of the crew bar, drinks included.

The ship offers a regular program of seven- to 11-night voyages. Prices start from $174 per person, per night for an inside cabin on an eight-night cruise to France, Italy and Greece in April 2025.

Best European cruises for 'wow' factor: Hurtigruten's Richard With

cruise ship with park in the middle

Looking for a sailing that no other cruise line offers and one that will make everyone on TikTok and Instagram jealous? I'm putting my money on a line you've likely never heard of: Hurtigruten .

The line began more than 130 years ago as a way for Norway's residents to move themselves and cargo up and down the Norwegian coast. It continues today as both a means of transportation and a way for cruisers to experience the country's culture.

On the cruise line's Norwegian Coastal Express route, Hurtigruten's Richard With ship calls on more than 30 ports in just six or seven days (depending on itinerary). Some are quick stops in the middle of the night while cargo is loaded and unloaded, but you could get off the ship in each port if you really wanted to. That in itself makes this itinerary buzzworthy.

Still need convincing? These voyages also cross into the Arctic Circle and sail into Geirangerfjord (northbound from Bergen to Kirkenes) and Trollfjord (southbound from Kirkenes to Bergen). The route affords absolutely breathtaking views and, of course, bragging rights.

The two routes can be combined into longer 13-day sailings, meaning you'd sail round-trip from Bergen and see all the fjords. Seven-night northbound itineraries from Bergen to Kirkenes start at $137 per person, per night for an inside cabin.

Bottom line

Ultimately, the best cruise to Europe is a bit subjective in that it depends where in Europe you'd like to go and what your travel style is. Be sure to weigh a combination of destination, price and onboard vibe when deciding which is best for you and your travel party.

Her $5,500 infirmary bill was higher than the cruise itself: How she got it covered

Portrait of Kathleen Wong

  • Travel insurance is a must for cruises, as medical bills can be high.
  • Even a low level of travel insurance can cover medical bills from your ship.
  • If you opt for a comprehensive trip policy, you’ll be fully covered for trip cancellation plus medical expenses.

After taking a Caribbean cruise with her mother last year, Megan Ayscue didn’t think she’d end up with a medical bill that would cost more than the cruise itself.

The North Carolina-based traveler and her mother boarded the Norwegian Pearl in November to visit the Dominican Republic, Curaçao and other island destinations. The two were enjoying the trip until Ayscue went snorkeling in the Dominican Republic a few days in and got water stuck in her ear.

At first, she went to an infirmary in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, but the problem wasn’t resolved. Thankfully, her medical insurance covered the visit. Back on board, Ayscue went to the ship’s infirmary, where she was given oral antibiotics, Tylenol and ear drops. Her ear still hurt, so she went back to the infirmary the next day while the ship was at sea and was diagnosed with a bacterial infection that was spreading to her face.

What happens if you get sick or injured (or bitten by a monkey) on a cruise ship

“My ear had completely swelled shut. I could not hear out of my left ear. It was so painful, and I couldn’t feel the side of my face,” she said. The infection had spread into her lymph nodes, numbing the left side of her face.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

Ayscue received an IV infusion of steroids, anti-inflammatory medicine, antibiotics and anti-nausea medicine. The doctors told her to return the next day for another infusion. Ayscue said her experience with the onboard infirmary was positive and healed her infection, but she left with a bill of $5,528.29. Since Ayscue didn’t have the money at the time, her mother put it on her credit card.

Back home, Ayscue waited six months to hear that her insurer denied covering her medical expenses from the cruise. Her parents had to shift money around to cover Ayscue’s medical bill, and because her mother had booked the cruise on the same credit card, struggled to make her monthly payments.

Norwegian Cruise Line told USA TODAY that “we strongly encourage guests to file a claim with their health insurance provider post-cruise.”

There was, however, one saving grace. Thankfully, the family had purchased travel insurance for the cruise because Ayscue’s mother had experienced a heart attack a few years ago. That insurance, which cost about $300, ended up covering every cent of the medical bill.

“It ended up basically saving me and my parents from a financial cliff,” she said.

Unfortunately, Ayscue’s experience is not unusual, and a hefty medical bill on cruise ships can be expected, even for typical medical problems that warrant a little medical attention, such as seasickness or infections.

“It’s unfortunately extremely uncommon,” said Jenna Hummer, public relations director at travel insurance platform Squaremouth. “Our highest recommendation for medical coverage is always for cruises.”

Here’s everything you need to know about travel insurance and cruising.

Why do I need travel insurance for my cruise?

For starters, cruise ships are nearly always out-of-network from your typical medical insurance. “It’s not like you’ll have a co-pay, no, you’ll probably have to pay out-of-network costs and have an astronomically high bill if you break your ankle,” Hummer said.

“The thing about cruising is if you get sick on the boat, you obviously have limited resources, so those resources cost more. It’s like dining on top of a mountain or an island − it’s just harder to get supplies, so it can cost more.”

Even a low level of travel insurance can cover medical bills from your ship, but it also goes far beyond that − for example, if you need medical care in a foreign country or to return home early. Even if you port in a U.S. territory and go to a hospital there, it’s likely that visit will be out-of-network for your insurance as well.

Travelers prone to getting seasick or planning on a “high-risk activity” like jet skiing or scuba diving should also consider travel insurance for that extra protection if things go south.

What does travel insurance cover on a cruise?

It depends on what option you purchase. Emergency medical travel insurance will be your cheapest option at around $50. That is, unless you’re considered to be at a higher risk of needing medical care − for example, if you’re 65 years and older, or going to a destination that’s considered high-risk or harbors communicable diseases.

“By purchasing a travel insurance policy with emergency medical and emergency medical transportation benefits, cruisers can be reimbursed for the cost of emergency medical care up to their policy limit, whether they’re seeking care directly on the cruise ship or at their port of call,” said Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA, which allows people to compare travel insurances.

If you opt for a comprehensive trip policy – which does cost more, 5% to 10% of your trip – you’ll be fully covered for trip cancellation plus medical expenses. “You’ll have 100% of your trip costs covered, but you’ll have options for how much medical coverage you want, like $10,000 or up to $1 million for medical evacuation coverage,” Hummer said. (A medical evacuation can cost tens of thousands of dollars.)

“It’s not a lot of money to insure yourself from a medical perspective,” she said.

“It’s better we spent those $300 for peace of mind and then it actually came in handy,” Ayscue said.

But if you’re intoxicated while visiting the infirmary, it’s possible your claim for travel insurance will be denied, Hummer added. So be careful with drinking. Pregnancy complications are also not typically included, although if you feel seasickness and are also pregnant, that will be covered.

For what it’s worth, travel insurance that’s more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better or covers more, so shop around and compare what’s included, Hummer said.

Can I buy travel insurance through my cruise line?

Technically you can, as most cruise lines offer some type of insurance, but it won’t be the best coverage. “Usually, they have very specific exclusions to keep an eye out for, like, they’ll only refund you a small portion of your trip if you get sick and there’s a very small timeline,” Hummer said. Basically, if you want to buy your cruise line’s insurance, read the fine print carefully.

When should I get travel insurance for my cruise?

For the most part, the earlier you get travel insurance, the more coverage you get. However, factors such as where you depart and the time of year also play a role.

“If you’re flying into Miami to board a cruise ship and it’s the middle of hurricane season, buy your travel insurance today,” Hummer said. “Alaska probably hasn’t seen a hurricane in forever, so it’s probably OK (to wait.)”

Buying travel insurance the day before your trip doesn’t necessarily affect the cost of insurance as it does the cost of flights, just what’s covered. If a storm is predicted before you purchase insurance, then that probably won't be covered by the time you do.

“Buying travel insurance as soon as you book your cruise is a smart move,” Durazo said.

One Of The World's Best River Cruises Is A Romantic European Escape Perfect For First-Timers

Sunset over the Danube in Budapest

When you imagine taking a cruise, you might think of exploring private Caribbean islands on a huge cruise ship . While those certainly have their place, it can be a bit intimidating to contemplate sailing the high seas with thousands of people, especially for first-time cruisers. If you're looking for something more intimate that still offers lots to do and see, consider booking a European cruise and put the Danube River at the top of your list. You can expect to see historic castles, picturesque countryside vistas, and grand cities as you go.

Spanning some 1,770 miles, the Danube is the second-longest river in Europe, running from western Germany all the way to the Black Sea. It passes through 10 countries and the capital cities of Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, and Belgrade. A cruise on the Danube can take between two and three weeks if you do the whole thing. However, if it's your inaugural cruise, you might be more comfortable with a shorter itinerary that tackles just one section of the historic river. If you fall in love with the lifestyle, you can always come back for more!

The most popular route is along the Upper Danube, between Hungary and Germany, which takes around a week. Typically, the cruise will start (or end) in Budapest, toward the middle of the river, and end (or start) in Regensburg or Nuremberg. All three cities feature impressive medieval architecture.

Danube River cruises spotlight history, culture, and food

Highlights of a Danube River cruise range from the historic and the musical to the delicious. The small Austrian village of Dürnstein, with its iconic pale blue clock tower, is where King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in the 1190s. The Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a number of idyllic vineyards known for producing world-class dry white wines. The region's Melk Abbey is visited by over half a million people each year, and its distinct yellow color, twin towers, and 200-foot-tall dome have made it a landmark along the Danube River for hundreds of years.

Then there's Vienna, the "City of Music." Classical composers like Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven lived and worked there, and it's home to the legendary Vienna State Opera and Vienna Boys Choir. The city's also got some beautiful palaces and cathedrals. Vienna is the place to try traditional wiener schnitzel, a pan-fried, breaded cutlet.

In Passau, near the border of Austria and Germany, the ornately decorated baroque St. Stephen's Cathedral has a massive organ with nearly 18,000 pipes. While in Passau, sample the famous pralines, chocolate, and gingerbread from Simon Confiserie. From Linz, Austria (depending on the cruise line), you can arrange a side trip to Salzburg, where "The Sound of Music" was filmed and where you can enjoy sensational desserts like Salzburger Nockerl at Café Mozart, a longtime center of Viennese coffeehouse culture.

Choose your Danube River cruise based on the time of year and the ship's amenities

Several cruise lines offer tours of the Danube, each with unique onboard experiences, shore excursions, durations, and price points. Cruising with the Riverside Mozart means enjoying a luxury ship where every room is a suite, and a butler is available to help attend to your every need. There's also a spa and sauna on board. Viking River Cruises provides a number of itineraries, including the "Romantic Danube" cruise, which lasts eight days. Along the way, you can learn to waltz in Vienna, tour the countryside via e-bike, and discover how to make apricot dumplings.

While you could visit many of these places via train or car, when you do it on a river cruise, you aren't packing and unpacking your suitcase for each stop, and you don't have to figure out directions. You basically get to just sit back and enjoy. And unlike crowded Caribbean cruises, river cruise ships are spacious yet intimate, serving fewer than 200 passengers. While there are options to cruise the Danube River pretty much year-round, the best times, when it comes to weather and crowds, are spring and fall – though November and December can be great if you want to visit some European Christmas markets .

10 Best Greece Cruises, According to Travel Experts

These are the best Greece cruises for island hopping with ease.

With its stunning beaches, rich history, iconic landmarks, and delectable cuisine, a trip to Greece is always a great idea. However, since the nation is home to more than 6,000 islands — some of which are only accessible by boat — your best bet is to explore via cruise. Just take it from Rob Clabbers, Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder, who tells T+L that “Greece and the Greek isles are just the perfect destinations to explore by ship” since “a cruise allows you to see more islands and gives you a unique vantage point.” Several of the best Greece cruises also include visits to neighboring countries like Turkey and Italy, for example, which allow travelers to experience several cultures and countries in one action-packed trip. Intrigued? We don’t blame you: Ahead, check out our favorite Greece cruises for every type of traveler, along with itinerary recommendations and expert insight.

Rob Clabbers is a T+L A-List travel advisor and founder of Q Cruise + Travel, a Chicago-based travel agency.

Mary Curry is a T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist.

Kari Dillon is the owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, an agency specializing in theme park and cruise vacations.

Megan Guinnup is a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels.

Windstar Cruises

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.
