Trip to Ooty and Coonoor - A Complete 4 Day Tour Guide

Wo Ooty ki chai ki pyali, wo chai ke Baagon ki Khushbu, wo hariyali ki bahaar aur kabhi ne bhulne waali yaad.

Eng Translate: That cup of Tea from Ooty, that fragrance from the tea garden, that greenery outside, and unforgettable memory.

Ooty is as exquisite as portrayed in the line above.

In this blog, I am bringing you the queen of Hills, Ooty, and will help you to plan your memorable trip to Ooty and Coonoor with a detailed 4-Day tour guide. I will be sharing our experiences and reviews of this amazing hill station. Being a beautiful hill station, Ooty is also a Honeymoon destination of India.

Our story of Ooty started when we were choosing where to go on a road trip from Bangalore. We decided on Ooty because a road trip from Bangalore to Ooty is marvelously full of scenic beauty and the highway is well maintained.

The original name of Ooty is Udagamandalam or Ootacamund . Ooty, the Magnificent Hills in the Awe-inspiring Nilgiris is located at the height of 2,240 meters in the state of Tamil Nadu. Ooty is around 85 kilometers from Coimbatore and 128 kilometers from Mysore. Other than tourists, agriculture (terrace farming), production of medicinal oils, and photography shooting are the main source of economy.

Ooty was the land of tribal communities - Badaga, Toda, Kota, and Kurumba. Some of the forest and farming areas are still under these primitive tribal communities.

Knowledge Fact: Ooty is situated in the Nilgiri hills, which means blue mountains  got its name from a   flower named Kurunji , which blossoms once in 12 years giving a purple-blue trace to the slopes of the hills.

How to Reach Ooty?

Ooty is a popular hill station and is very well connected to almost every part of the country. You can choose railway, roadway or airway to reach here, depending on your convenience.

Air: If your want to arrive by flight , the nearest airport is Coimbatore , which is 88 km away from Ooty. The flight options from major places like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore are available. Once you reach Coimbatore you will get many options of taxi and cabs. You can book one and reach Ooty.

Train: Another option is by train , which is also a good option. you will get many trains from cities like Chennai, Mysore, Bangalore. The nearest railway station is Mettupalayam , which is 40 km from Ooty. You will get many taxi and local cabs option from here also.

Bus: You can reach Ooty by bus . The luxurious Volvo sleeper bus, as well as government bus, both are available to reach Ooty. You can book an overnight bus and reach here comfortably.

The best way to reach Ooty is by Road drive , which we opted for reaching Ooty. It took around 8 hours to reach after taking halts for breakfast and snacks.

Our Road Journey from Bangalore to Ooty

As expected, our road journey was incredible, offering a lot of attractions along the way. It's perfect to go with family, friends, and loved ones.

We crossed infinite rows of coconut trees, greenery, shady peaks creating a perfect picture. We also crossed wildlife sanctuary Bandipur and Mudumalai. The forest part was amazing, we saw an elephant and a few deer while crossing. A long drive on a perfect highway (trees on both sides of the highway) with the loud music of your favorite track and a few packets of munching. And that's how we accomplished our journey. We had a typical south Indian breakfast in Kamat  on the Mysore highway. We also took a few halts on our way for refreshments to drink coconut water.

If you are planning a road trip from Bangalore to Ooty, the first thing to decide is your vehicle . If you have your own car and you are good at driving then it's very good. But if you don't have your own car, you can book a car from Quick Ride or Savaari , which is a very reliable and good option. We opted for Quick Ride to book a car for 4 days with a driver and the charge was 13k  INR including fuel, toll, and an extra 100KM. This was the best deal we got after doing a lot of research.

Tip : Another inspiration for booking a car from Bangalore is, there are no options for rental bikes or cars in Ooty. After reaching there, we had to book a cab for sightseeing and visiting places for 3 days. This will cost around 3k per day which means around 9k. And if we book train till Coimbatore, from there also we had to book a cab till Ooty, which again costs some 2k-3k. Adding all the travel expenses will cost the same as renting a car from Banglore itself. If you are traveling from Bangalore or nearby cities, opt for a road drive without any hassle and worries.

The second thing to decide is the route . There are 2 routes to reach Ooty from Bangalore. We have opted for the first route via Mysore as it is taking less time compared to another one.

Route 1 ( View Map )

Bangalore -> Ramanagara -> Mysore -> Gudalur -> Ooty

Route 2 ( View Map )

Bangalore -> Hosur -> Krishnagiri -> Salem -> Coonoor -> Ooty

When to visit Ooty?

This is the most important question while planning a trip to any place. Climate plays a major role in deciding how you are enjoying your vacation. I know sometimes there are sudden plans of the trip and those are the ones that actually work out. Luckily Ooty always has something to offer in almost every season of the year.

Summer in Ooty : March to June -  Summer is a very good time to visit Ooty. Although the climate is hotter during the daytime especially in the afternoon. The average temperature goes to 25 degrees celsius. But the mornings and evenings are chills with a mild cold. You need to carry jackets with you anytime you visit Ooty.

Winter in Ooty: November to February - The chilling cold, foggy hills and the shining sun in the noon. This is probably is the best time to visit Ooty. The morning and night will the coldest but I am sure you will enjoy this winter. Hot tea or coffee in the chilling and misty morning is the best combination. We visited Ooty in the month of December, although we expected less sunny during peak winter.

There were lots of tourists and it was a full rush during this season, maybe because of the winter vacation for children and the wedding season, as the place is perfect for winter holidays as well as for the honeymoon for couples.

Tip: Carry thermals and winter wear. For the ladies, you can purchase a poncho from Ooty. They were kind of available everywhere in the Ooty market and are wool knitted. I brought one.

Monsoon in Ooty: July to October - Monsoon is not exactly the best time to visit Ooty as you will not be able to cover many spots. The hills would be slippery and of course dangerous to travel. But if you just want to enjoy nature and be surrounded by greenery and colored flowers, you can plan your trip. You can plan your trip in the early monsoon if you want to.

What is the mode of Transport in Ooty?

As soon as you reach Ooty, your first concern is how to travel and visit spots. If you are going Ooty in the car then you don't have to worry. But if you going by train or flight or bus, you have to book a cab or taxi for 3-days. As I mentioned earlier, there is no rental bikes or car available in Ooty.

You will find many options of cabs and taxis in Ooty, near railway station or bus station or airport. Also, you can pre-book a cab for yourself online. Or you can book with the help of your hotel, they generally have the options.

Another option is to use public transport, but this will not be so comfortable. Because traveling on the hill is hectic and tiring. You may feel anxiety due to the height and turnings while climbing up and down.

Where to stay in Ooty?

You will find many options in Ooty to stay. There are lots of hotels and resorts available from higher range to lower range.

We booked our stay in Deccan Park Resort which is a very decent property in our budget. The resort was good and well maintained and they maintain good hygiene in rooms. They only serve vegetarian food which might concern non-veg food lovers. In complimentary breakfast mostly it's south Indian cuisines and in dinner its buffet which is chargeable about 500 per person.

Pre-book your hotel before visiting because being a hill station and tourist spot, there is always a rush in Ooty.

After reaching our hotel in the afternoon, we took some rest and relaxed a bit. The weather was chilly with a cold breeze. We had hot tea and hot onion pakoras in our resort. Then we planned to visit the Rose garden because we still had time.

Rose Garden

Located at the center of the city, this garden is one of the largest Rose gardens in India. The Rose garden was earlier known as Jayalalithaa Rose garden . The garden is located in Vijayanagaram town in Ooty on the slopes of Elk Hill and was launched in 1995. The Rose garden is extremely beautiful with colorful rose plants arranged in curving terraces. The tropical climate of Ooty gives ideal and appropriate weather for Rose gardening. The garden looks stunning during the time of Rose flowering, expanded in an area of 10 acres. The garden has one of the largest collections of Rose varieties in Asia including Hybride tea roses, miniature roses, black and green roses, gathered from different places of the World. You will be delighted to see the varieties of colorful roses.  There were around 1900 roses earlier, which is now reached up to more than 20,000 varieties of roses. The garden is maintained by the government authorities.  We spent our first evening in Ooty in this superb Rose garden and finally, came back to the resort. Had dinner in the resort itself. Day 2 Itinerary

The next day we chose to go on a boat riding in Ooty Lake. Ooty was crowded with lots of visitors, so we left early to avoid the rush.

Ooty Lake, also famous by the name Boat House is an artificial lake constructed in 1824. The purpose of building this lake was to do fishing. Its located in the Nilgiris district, around 1km from Ooty Railway station. Ooty lake is extremely famous and is the center of attraction for tourists especially for boating facilities like Motorboating, Paddle boating. The lake is surrounded by greenery, bushes, and eucalyptus trees forming a stunning picturesque. The gorgeous scenery of Ooty can be seen while boating in Ooty Lake, offering a treat to photographers and nature lovers. Through one side of the lake, you can see the train running along the mountain, forming the most attractive and beautiful view.  Once you enter the premises, you will see many woolen shops, many shops of eucalyptus oil (Nilgiri oil), Ooty chocolates, tea, and coffee. There is a different section of kids gaming, entertainment, and fun making the place lively.  We extremely enjoyed boat riding. I want to share a small incident that happened with us. While we were waiting in the queue to get the ticket for boat riding, there was this family of 8 members and they had a ticket for a 10 seater motorboat. Out of nowhere one guy from that family came and asked, if you want you can come with us, we have 2 seats extra. We were happy to go with them as it saved us at least one hour's time. They were so humble, we kept talking while boating, they didn't even take the amount from us even after forcing. I suddenly felt, the world is full of humble people, we just have to look around.  "Being kind, generous, and humble is the real beauty."

Boating in Ooty Lake
After boat riding, we left for Coonoor. You can also catch an Ooty Toy Train from Ooty to Coonoor , a mesmerizing journey from the mid of lush green tea estates, thick eucalyptus forests, and soaring mountains. The train will take 3 hours to reach Coonoor. We were short of time as we wanted to cover the whole of Coonoor in a day, also we had a car with us, so we went by car. But you can definitely enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime trip to Ooty Toy Train.
Coonoor is also a hill station situated in Nilgiri hills and is very famous for Tea estates. Like Ooty, Coonoor is also surrounded by lush greenery everywhere giving a stunning view. After Ooty, Coonoor is the second largest hill station in the Nilgiris.  We had a drive from Ooty to Coonoor and it was as beautiful as expected. As we entered Coonoor, we could see the view of tea plantation everywhere, the aroma of the tea was so attractive, pushing me to have a cup of tea. We directly reached a very famous spot Dolphin's nose.

To witness the panoramic view of peaks and the lush green tea estates from the top, this romantic spot gets a lot of visitors every year.  This is a perfect place to see nature's beauty with a  breathtaking view of a waterfall, Catherine waterfalls. This would be a dreamy experience for the visitors. When we reached, the place was a bit crowded, there were many shops, maggie serving shops, lemon juice, corn chaat, and many more before the entry gate of Dolphin's Nose. We took the ticket from the counter and as we enter, we witnessed the spectacular view of the whole of Coonoor, the hills, and the tea estates. We took lots of photographs, spent some time here and left for the next destination. Entry Fees

Honest Review: Honestly, I had fun in Lamb's Rock, it's a great place to view the exquisite Coonoor. As I mentioned, though we visited Ooty in peak winters, the noon was very sunny and hot. We could have enjoyed it more if the climate was more feasible.

Incredible view from Lamb's Rock in Coonoor
Post our visit to Lamb's Rock, we were hungry and it was lunchtime. While coming out of Lamb's Rock, we saw a running restaurant, made of bamboo, wood, and a hut-styled design. It was crowded and was very reasonable in terms of price.
We had our lunch here. You will definitely notice this place, we couldn't find the name of this restaurant but one unique thing I observed, it was completely run by ladies. The food was very good, we were very satisfied.

Tea Estate Shopping and Photography

Once we did our lunch, we had some time left for shopping and photography. There was an oil factory while coming out of Lamb's Rock towards Coonoor. We stopped there, had a small tour of the oil factory, the guy there explained to us how they extract different varieties of oil used for different purposes from the eucalyptus tree, famously known as ' Nilgiri ka tel'  in India. We purchased a lot of things, Nilgiri oil for our Moms as they are very effective to reduce knee pain, I took some beauty products, face oil, sandal powder, spices, etc.

Then we stopped to click some memorable photos on the way. We relished the greenery and the scenic beauty of Coonoor. It was an awesome experience and it was worth visiting the place.  We moved back to Ooty from Coonoor and reached our Resort before night.

Day 3 Itinerary

This was our last day in Ooty. We decided to visit the Ooty Tea Factory and try the yummiest tea ever.

Ooty Tea Factory

The Tea Factory is situated amid the cliffs of Nilgiri, at the height of 1840 meters, and is expanded in the area of around one acre. This is a tea museum, visited by many visitors to learn the origin of Tea, how the tea is extracted from the tea leaves, what are the different steps and much more.  They provide an outstanding tour of the tea factory and in the end, we get to taste a cup of hot tea, which was very satisfying. There was an open shopping area to buy tea powder, they had varieties of options in tea. Each person will guide each visitor to help them buy the tea which they like. We purchased three different flavors of tea, along with coffee. Also, we visited the chocolate section, just beside tea. They showed us how they prepare chocolates from the cocoa. We purchased varieties of chocolates from here. As we all know Ooty chocolates are quite famous, I couldn't miss buying most of the flavors.  I will be posting a complete tour and emerging story of Tea in a separate blog. Do visit, the story behind tea will definitely amuse you. Entry Fees:  Rs. 20 per person

Creating a charming view, the spot is filmed in many Bollywood as well as Tollywood movies.  The Pine trees are planted close to each other in an arranged pattern, with a height up to 80 meters. The age of the pine trees is even 1000-4000 years old. The view is just outstanding. Pykara Waterfall and Boating

We moved further to the next destination, Pykara Waterfall , which is one of the most beautiful and exquisite, originating from Mukurthi Peak. Pykara is located around 20 kilometers from Ooty towards the Mysore. The waterfall is very attractive and captivating with water falling downwards through different streams.  After taking a ticket from the counter, you need to walk at least 1-1.5 kilometers. You will get amazing spots to click photographs while walking towards the waterfall.

The place was very crowded when we reached and there was a long queue for the boating ticket, so we dropped the plan to go on boating. The vast and never-ending stretch of lush greenery, how far you walk, you only find the grassland, this is nothing but the Wenlock Downs of Ooty. On the 4th day, we checkout from the resort and left for Bangalore via the same route. This time we were lucky to witness at least 4 to 5 elephants in Mudumalai Reserve. Our journey back to Bangalore was very smooth. We stopped just after Mysore in this amazing restaurant, The Poojari Fishland. Everything was superb, the food, the ambiance, and the serving.

We reached Bangalore at around 6 PM.

Table of Contents

When we hear the word ‘Ooty’ suddenly mind will be telling ‘wow’ ! right? – Yes. Ooty( Udhagamandalam)  is loving called as “Queen of Hills” or “Queen of Hill stations”. Ooty is one such place in Tamilnadu where the hills are tucked in the Nilgiris or the Blue mountains.

Ooty is almost 2240m above sea level and the weather is so pleasing, which allows you to explore the beauty around you without breaking a sweat. And it is a paradise for Love birds as it has lush green parks and tea plantations, tall pines, valleys, peaks, rose garden, lake, last but very important is foggy atmosphere etc., made Ooty a very special tourist place in South India.

Tea plantations

Like Ooty, Coonoor is also a beautiful with tea plantations, hills, parks, fog with morning dew. You may feel the dew like rain sometimes ! and we felt it in our trip. The moist breeze of the misty hills of Coonoor tingles the nerves and tickles the senses. It is no surprise that goose bumps amaze and distract at the same time while engrossed in the flavours of this very place and that includes the sights. Coonoor is 1850m above sea level and the weather is same as Ooty, but Coonoor is more quieter than Ooty, also has very good options for stay. That’s why we chose to stay in Coonoor rather than staying at Ooty.

Nilgiri Toy Train is an added attraction to both Ooty and Coonoor. You get to see awesome picturesque valleys, lush green hills, tea plantations, lofty mountains, tall pine trees. Overall Toy train is a must visit when you go to Ooty/Coonoor.

If I have to tell about our stay, we were staying in ‘The Gateway Hotel’ by Taj   Hotels.  Tucked between manicured gardens, this signature heritage-hotel & restaurant is a lovely place. And they also have a brilliant buffet option for food. Ayurvedic massage centre and rooms with views of the garden and very good staff service make you feel so heavenly.

Getting to Coonoor

Bangalore to Coonoor is around 290 km via Mysore, Ooty. Coonoor is well connected by road around the cities, and the nearest airport is Coimbatore. If you are travelling between Coonoor to Ooty then Toy train is a good option. So that you will be able to enjoy the nature’s beauty!

It is a delightful journey if you have taken your own car then it’s very easy and comfortable for the travel and to roam around during your trip. Also you can enjoy the greenery and peacefulness of the natureYou can take either your car or hire a car and go.

Short Video from Masinagudi to Coonoor

Drive from Masinagudi to Coonoor via Ooty ( Ooty-Coonoor itinerary | 3 days 2 nights in Coonoor )

Coonoor does not have an airport, and the Coimbatore airport is the closest domestic airport. Flights to Coimbatore from all major cities in India are operated by all airlines, and there are daily flights from Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai. Bangalore is the closest international airport

There will be buses to Ooty, from there you can take any other way of transport like local buses or train.

Where to stay in Coonoor

There are plenty of options available, if you plan early. Also check the recent reviews online before booking your stays.

Food/ Dining in Coonoor

In South India Dining may not be a problem for anybody I feel. Because many options like Indian to Italian, Chinese foods are easily available in most of the places. And there are so many cafes, and local cuisine restaurants are available. With the serene ambience you will feel every bite is worth enjoying.

You can also experience the taste of unadulterated organic honey which is one of the best offerings of the city in terms of natural products. Also you can buy homemade chocolates and variety of tea powders, which is famous in Ooty and Coonoor.

We didn’t do anything much shopping there, just bought a couple of sweaters which was necessary, but prices were bit on the higher side I felt.

Here are the many other places which you may like to visit, Hogenakal waterfalls , Sakleshpur , Lepakshi

So Let’s come to the actual Itinerary

Ooty-Coonoor itinerary | 3 days 2 nights in Coonoor (but totally 5 days) !

It’s very hard to explain that feeling in words that too in one post about the entire journey. Like our Journey starts from Bangalore around 11.30 am and we reach Mysore(Lalitha Mahal Palace hotel) for lunch around 3pm. After finishing the lunch headed towards towards Masinagudi for a night stay, on the way we got to see Bandipur Tiger Reserve. Though we couldn’t see Tiger but able to see many deer, peacocks and the beautiful nature all the way.

Peacock at Bandipur

Around 6.30 we reached Singaras Coffee Country Masinagudi, one of the peaceful place for the ones who are bored of daily chaos and buzzes in the city. But there is no facility of restaurant there, you can order the food from outside hotel. Apart from that everything was good, rooms were newly built and clean. Staffs are friendly and helping, you can request for campfire, during campfire we were able to see some of the deers. If you are lucky enough you can witness elephant in the vicinity too.

Sunrise at Masinagudi

Next day morning after finishing the breakfast and we checked out and started our journey towards Coonoor via Ooty. It was beautiful nature, hairpin bends, valleys, tall pine trees, greener tea plantations everything we witnessed throughout our journey. We stopped at Culinarium-Coonoor , which is nestled in the vast and beautiful Ketti Valley (second widest valley in the world).Superb location and ambience, desserts and bakery items which we ordered were very nice though the service was late. Very good place for a quick stop and enjoy the quick bites, pastries, bakery items, lunch/dinner. Food was delicious and yummy!.

Culinarium-Coonoor

Around 2pm we reached Gateway hotel Coonoor by Taj . After checking in we had our lunch and relaxed for that day.

3 days in Coonoor : Relaxed Coonoor itinerary

( ooty-coonoor itinerary | 3 days 2 nights in coonoor ), day 1: sim’s park.

The Sim’s Park was developed around the natural contours of the land more than hundred years ago. The initiative of the development of the park was undertaken by Mr J.D. Sim’s and Major Murray in the year 1874.  Sim’s park is one of the famous tourist attractions and having the oldest trees.  The Sim’s park is the ideal place to indulge in all of your favourite nature activities, including clicking splendid photographs, taking long peaceful walks, boating and sightseeing. The garden has been divided into four parts – the Rose Garden, a small lily pond, the flowering plants area and a boating area. Children especially love the boat rides in the lake, while adults mostly prefer to sit back and relax. There are no shops that serve food inside the park. Thus, it is good to carry some light snacks and water along.

Sim's Park, Coonoor

Day 2: Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Chocolate museum

Nilgiri Mountain Railway | Toy Train

Toy Train is one of the must visit when you go to Ooty or Coonoor. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) , better known as Ooty toy train is the highlight of the popular hill town of Ooty in Tamil Nadu, India. This is a world heritage train that travels between Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor daily and imparts picturesque views while providing relief from the stifling summer heat. Started in the year 1899, it has continued to charm its visitors with equal zest winding its way through the best of nature. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005.

Coonoor to Ooty train ride is ethereal that weaves amidst the forests, dark snaking tunnels, sharp bends and amid the mist and fog. The toy train ride in Ooty is a trip to treasure up and down the hilly slopes. Apart from offering a beautiful journey, the uniqueness of the ride lies in the fact that the rail system is the steepest in Asia. The ride starts from Mettupalayam; a small place on river Bhavani. For the first few miles, vacationers travel on plains but the next miles take up to an elevation of up to a height of 4363 feet. This lovely toy train ride is best means to discover the pristine treasures of the Nilgiris.

Here are some glimpse of those:

Toy train coonoor

Nilgiri Mountain Railway | Toy Train | Coonoor-Ooty

For enjoying this beautiful Toy train journey you need to book the ticket online or at the ticket counter. If you are taking in the ticket counter better go 1 or 2 hour before to avoid queue.

Chocolate museum

Chocolate museum is on the way when we were returning from the Ooty Toy train. So thought of visiting. After taking the tickets we entered. Museum has good facilities to show and explain how the chocolates are made in home. One person will explain the entire process of making the chocolates bars from the cocoa fruit. I will write a separate article on Chocolate Museum very soon.

Coonoor railway station

Its a journey from Bean to Bar and its pure joy in every bite. You will get chocolate dipped wafer as complimentary. Also you can buy variety of chocolates there if you are chocolate lover.

at Gateway Hotel by Taj

We checked out, had our lunch and started to Salem for a night stay. We were staying in Zibe Salem by GRT hotels. It was again a good hotel and good chef, who personally come to you ask for your tastes. Nice food and kind of good hotel.

You’ll also have time to experience the local culture and enjoy leisurely strolls amidst the tea gardens.

If you are planning your trip on long weekends then better plan early otherwise you will have to compromise on the price of the stay. we had planned in December like after Christmas to New Year time, so almost all the good hotels were full.

Also its better if you carry sweaters, scarf and muffler because in the morning and night it will be chill. If you forgot it then you can buy in local shops.

Have you visited Coonoor/ Ooty? If yes please share your experience in the comments.

Stay tuned for more travel blogs… 🙂

BEST PLACES TO EAT IN KODAIKANAL

There are a quite a few restaurants and cafes that have made a good name for themselves. If you are looking to have a meal in a pure veg restaurant then you could go for: Hotel Astoria Veg – Located in the Anna Salai Market, it is quite popular for its South Indian dishes. Woody’s Restaurant – Talk about a meal in an open garden with greenery all around! If a pure veg restaurant isn’t a restriction for you then I highly recommend that you try the following restaurants: Cloud Street – Popular for its continental cuisine. They serve some delicious pizzas from the wood fired oven. Muncheez – They serve continental cuisine. Shakes and rolls are quite good. Ambience is absolutely amazing. Atlaf’s Cafe – Altaf’s cafe is located in Vattakanal (near Dolphin’s Nose). They serve the best Middle-Eastern food, thanks to the Israeli influence on the village. Though all these places would offer you dessert but there is none like the Pastry Corner that can satisfy your sweet tooth. Their pastries, brownies and ice creams are to die for.

Let me club the places on the basis of distance and you choose which are the ones from a particular group that you would want to visit.

This is where we would go a little away from Kodaikanal. Depending on how much you want to cover and how much time you have, take your pick from the following for day 1:

1. Dolphin’s Nose

Dolphin's Nose Vattakanal (near Kodaikanal)

Dolphin’s Nose is one of the most popular places to see in Vattakanal. Descend to the viewpoint starts near Altaf’s cafe. The hike till the view point is laden with spectacular views only to be bettered by the mesmerizing scenery which can be seen from the Dolphin’s Nose. The viewpoint gets its name from the fact that the rock jutting out of the mountain edge is shaped like a dolphin’s nose. Going a bit further on the trails gets you to another viewpoint by the name Echo Rock. This point is quite the treat for photography enthusiasts and selfie lovers.

2. Vattakanal Falls

One of the more serene falls in the region is the Vattakanal Falls. The white water flowing from above with the greenery all around, really gives it a magical touch. The water forms a pool at the bottom where tourists can swim. Travelers also choose to hike up the waterfall to see the beauty all around. It is magnificent. Sightseeing in Kodaikanal isn’t complete without a visit to these wonder falls. Suggested Read: Vattakanal – Hidden hill station no one is talking about!

Unfortunately, for security reasons you can only see the caves from a distance.

Pambar Falls, popularly also knows as the Grand Cascade or Liril Falls, is situated about 4km from Kodaikanal. Accessible following a steep and slippery path behind the Pambar House, this waterfall is a good picnic spot boasting some endemic birds and butterflies. A pond is created at the bottom of the waterfall where swimming can be really fun.

The 13 Best Movies and TV Shows to Watch Labor Day Weekend

Portrait of Savannah Salazar

I spoke too soon when last week I said movie theaters were biding their time until Labor Day weekend because … where are the movies??? Thankfully, 4DX wants us to ride our fears (and watch Twisters and Twister in a body-rattling theater). Aside from that, it’s looking like a movies-at-home type of weekend. There’s plenty of movies coming to streaming from, M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap to Ishana Night Shyamalan’s Watchers . We also have returning TV faves in The Rings of Power and Only Murders in the Building . Here are all the best picks for this long weekend.

Featured Presentations

. only murders in the building season 4.

Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez return, this time to figure out who killed Steve Martin’s longtime stunt double (Jane Lynch) while watching their podcast get made into a movie. New guest stars this season include Molly Shannon, Zach Galifianakis, and Richard Kind. —Jen Chaney

. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2

The worst people complained about Galadriel wielding a sword in the show’s first season, so kudos to the creators for giving her more warrior content in the second. And there’s just more overall: characters, battles, and, yes, rings. —Roxana Hadadi

➼ Max has the rest of the Middle-earth stories on film, by the way.

. English Teacher

It’s not easy being a high-school teacher, something that Evan Marquez repeatedly learns in this comedy created by Brian Jordan Alvarez, who also stars as Evan. —J.C.

Greek mythology with a modern twist? Percy Jackson is calling. Jokes aside, Jeff Goldblum takes up the lightning bolt as Zeus in this new Netflix series from creator Charlie Covell. Instead of a preteen summer camp, Kaos deals with the gods as they bicker and plot and mix in with mortals in the real world. Along for the ride are Janet McTeer, Debi Mazar, Billie Piper, Suzy Eddie Izzard, and Stephen Dillane.

➼ It looks like Succession , but apocalyptic.

Practically every piece of parental tech these days is connected to Wi-Fi and perhaps bit too “smart.” What makes Blumhouse’s new horror feature Afraid scary is that the question Katherine Waterston asks — “The A.I. is bribing our children?” — already cuts pretty close to home. —Eric Vilas-Boas

Back in Theaters

Twister/twisters in 4dx.

The people ( me ) were begging for a Twister / Twisters double feature back in July, but you know what, it’s appropriate that we have to ride our fears and see this double feature in 4-damn-DX. If you need more information or persuasion, our resident 4DX enthusiast Rebecca Alter wrote a whole piece about the vibe, which you can read in full here :

Finally Streaming

A quiet place: day one.

If you’re looking for thrills, the prequel to John Krasinki’s A Quiet Place may hit the spot. Apparently the aliens in these films are called death angels?? I learned that at basically the same time Lupita N’yongo , the star of Day One , did.

Kinds of Kindness

Yorgos Lanthimos’s return to the unpleasant is making its way to Hulu. A triad of stories in one film, Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Margaret Qualley star in fables about a man whose wife has returned after a long disappearance, a boss controlling the life of his worker, and the lives of two cult members. It’s all quite strange; it’s all totally Lanthimos.

➼ “We’re a cult now.” — Yorgos Lanthimos, 2024

The Fall Guy (and its extended cut)

The Fall Guy didn’t have enough time to let theatrical audiences fall in love with it , but nowadays, films like that get a new life on streaming. Now on Peacock with an extended cut, this stunt spectacle makes for a perfect movie night of romance, action, and laughs. Ryan Gosling stars as a stuntman pulled out of semi-retirement to work on his ex-girlfriend’s (Emily Blunt) first big directing gig (without her knowledge). There’s also a murder-mystery bubbling under the surface with an on-point performance from Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

The Watchers

Dark woods can be scary! Scary enough to hang a horror premise on in a post– Blair Witch  world? You be the judge now that it’s streaming. M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter Ishana directed it.  —E.V.B.

➼ More horrors: The elder Shyamalan’s Trap and Mike Flanagan’s Hush are now on VOD. ( Hush after being pulled off of Netflix a year ago.)

When will the next presidential debate of 2024 take place and who will moderate it?

By Caitlin Yilek

Updated on: August 30, 2024 / 12:41 PM EDT / CBS News

Before President Biden decided to  drop out of the race  for reelection, he and former President Donald Trump had agreed to one more showdown on the debate stage before the  2024 presidential election .

After Mr. Biden ended his campaign, it was initially unclear whether a debate between Trump and the new Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, would take place, but ABC News confirmed both campaigns said  they would participate  in the debate, which is scheduled for Sept. 10, just a few weeks after Harris formally accepted the nomination.

When is the second presidential debate?

ABC News is hosting the second presidential debate on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. It will be the first time Harris and Trump debate each other.

The debate will be held at the National Constitution Center  in Philadelphia .

The first presidential debate , on June 27, in which Trump faced President Biden in Atlanta, came unusually early  in the election season given that neither candidate had formally received their party's nomination yet. Trump accepted the GOP nomination on July 18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Harris accepted the Democratic nomination during the party's convention in Chicago on Aug. 22.

Plans for the ABC debate had been in question after Trump said on Aug. 3 that he was "terminating" it and would do a debate hosted by Fox News on Sept. 4 instead. Harris responded that she would be at the ABC News debate on Sept. 10 and hoped "to see him there."

Then, at a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Thursday, Aug. 8, Trump recommitted to the ABC News debate.

He also proposed two others, with Fox News on Sept. 4 and NBC News on Sept. 25. Harris has not yet agreed to the two additional debates. A Harris campaign spokesperson said Harris is "open to and eager to discuss more debates, but Trump has to show up to the September 10th debate first."

Trump seemed to indicate on Aug. 26 that he would not participate in the debate, saying that his campaign agreed to the same rules regarding microphones in place for the  first presidential debate , including muting the mics. Harris' team confirmed it did not want to mute the mics while the other candidate was talking, saying "our understanding is that Trump's handlers prefer the muted microphone because they don't think their candidate can act presidential for 90 minutes on his own."

But Trump later said "we agreed to the same rules. I don't know, doesn't matter to me."

Who will moderate the next debate?

"World News Tonight" anchor David Muir and ABC News Live "Prime" anchor Linsey Davis will moderate the debate, ABC News said.

Which candidates qualify for the debate?

The qualifications are similar to the first debate, making it unlikely that any  non-major party candidates will meet the ballot access and polling requirements to earn a spot on stage. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was running as an independent, suspended his campaign on Aug. 23 and threw his support behind Trump.

Candidates need to earn at least 15% support in four approved national polls and be on the ballot in enough  states to be able to win 270 votes  in the Electoral College — the threshold to win the presidency — in order to qualify.

How many more debates will there be for 2024?

There are no other presidential debates scheduled before the election at this point. The campaigns previously  agreed to only two debates — the one hosted by CNN on June 27 and the other by ABC News on Sept. 10. Trump has proposed two more, but the Harris campaign has not agreed.

CBS News has also invited the campaigns to participate in a vice presidential debate on Oct. 1 , and both the Democrat, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and the Republican, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, have accepted.

The candidates have  bypassed the tradition of three debates organized by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, which had overseen presidential debates since 1988. The commission's three debates were scheduled to take place in September and October at universities in Texas, Virginia and Utah. Instead, this year's debates were agreed upon without any involvement by the commission.

The commission was met with sharp criticism by both Trump — who has accused the commission of being biased against Republicans — and by close advisers to Mr. Biden, who view commission procedures as outmoded and fussy. The co-chair of the commission, Frank Fahrenkopf, told CBS News' podcast "The Takeout" that top White House communications adviser Anita Dunn "doesn't like us," and he said on a Politico podcast that this was the reason Mr. Biden's team went around the commission to negotiate directly with Trump's campaign.

7 big issues at stake in the 2024 election

Demonstrators protest outside the U.S. Supreme

WASHINGTON — The policy contrasts between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are sharpening as the general election campaign gets fully underway.

But what does the choice represent for ordinary voters and the economic and cultural issues they care about? A rematch between the Democratic incumbent and his Republican predecessor may feel uninspiring to many voters, but the policy stakes are enormous for tens of millions of Americans — and the world.

Here are seven big issues at stake in the 2024 election.

The contrast: Biden favors federal abortion protections; Trump opposes them. Trump supported nationwide restrictions on abortion as president but now downplays the need for a federal ban, as Republicans are divided over the issue. Biden does not support federal limits.

Biden has championed the Women’s Health Protection Act, a bill to protect abortion rights in all 50 states under federal law and prohibit medically unnecessary hurdles to accessing the procedure. He has asked voters to send him a Democratic Congress that supports legal abortion to achieve that.

Trump has boasted that he "broke Roe v. Wade" by picking three of the five Supreme Court justices who overturned it, delivering on a four-decade goal of the GOP. More recently, Trump has openly fretted that the backlash may cost him and his party the election. Last week, Trump said the issue should be left to states, a shift from his support for nationwide restrictions when he was president. His new stance has drawn pushback from GOP allies, like Sen. Lindsey Graham, of South Carolina , and anti-abortion-rights advocates, who say that he is wrong and that Republicans should not be deterred from their long-standing goal of enacting some nationwide abortion limits.

Some Republicans downplay the prospects of federal abortion restrictions’ passing Congress, even if they win full control. Biden and his allies are telling voters to look at the GOP’s long history of championing federal restrictions and not their recent rhetoric.

Immigration

The contrast: Trump has promised a sweeping crackdown on illegal immigration and tougher executive actions; Biden is asking Congress to give him more tools to manage an overwhelmed border and create new legal pathways to immigrate to the U.S.

Trump has called existing border laws an existential threat to the U.S., saying migrants are “ poisoning the blood of our country” and bringing new “ languages .” His campaign website says: “President Trump will shut down Biden’s border disaster. He will again end catch-and-release, restore Remain in Mexico , and eliminate asylum fraud. In cooperative states, President Trump will deputize the National Guard and local law enforcement to assist with rapidly removing illegal alien gang members and criminals.”

After having rescinded some of Trump's policies, Biden has recently shifted to support stricter immigration laws as the system remains overwhelmed. He championed a bipartisan bill to raise the bar for gaining asylum, grant more U.S. resources to process asylum claims and turn away migrants who do not qualify, and empower the president to temporarily shut down the border if migration levels hit certain triggers. (Republicans blocked the bill in the Senate amid lobbying by Trump , who wants to use the border as an election issue.) Biden has also endorsed the U.S. Citizenship Act , which would grant a pathway to citizenship for people in the U.S. illegally if they pass background checks and pay their taxes.

Fundamentally, Trump has aligned with forces who want less immigration into the country, while Biden has embraced the belief that immigrants make the U.S. better.

Health care and prescription drugs

The contrast: Biden wants to extend Affordable Care Act provisions and empower Medicare to negotiate more prescription drugs; Trump has aggressively criticized the ACA but not offered a health care plan.

Biden, who was vice president when the Affordable Care Act passed in 2010, sees it as a cherished achievement to protect and strengthen. The law, also known as "Obamacare," which has extended coverage to 45 million people through subsidies, insurance mandates and a Medicaid expansion, continues to face conservative opposition.

Separately, Biden has touted a provision in his party-line Inflation Reduction Act that empowers Medicare to negotiate lower prices for 10 prescription drugs. He said he wants to boost that to 50 if he is re-elected, with the goal of $200 billion in savings.

Trump spent his four years as president fighting unsuccessfully to repeal and unravel the law — through legislation and executive action and endorsing lawsuits to wipe it out. In November, Trump called for revisiting plans to "terminate" the ACA . He has recently sought to downplay that and insists he only wants to improve the law. But he has not offered a health care plan. Many of his GOP allies in Congress still favor repealing or undoing the ACA, including a budget by the Republican Study Committee, which boasts about 80% of the House GOP conference as members, including Speaker Mike Johnson, of Louisiana.

The contrast: Trump's 2017 tax cuts expire at the end of next year, and he has called for extending them; Biden has called for raising taxes on families earning over $400,000 to fund various priorities.

A series of Trump tax cuts, which Republicans passed on a party-line basis in 2017, expire at the end of 2025. Congress and the winner of the election will decide what happens to them.

In a recent private speech to wealthy donors, Trump s aid his policies include "extending the Trump tax cuts" if he is elected, according to a Trump campaign official. That would preserve lower rates across the income spectrum, with the biggest benefits for top earners.

Biden has attacked that law as a giveaway to the wealthiest Americans, vowing to make "big corporations and the very wealthy finally pay their fair share." He has backed a corporate tax rate hike from 21% to 28% and said that "nobody earning less than $400,000 will pay an additional penny in federal taxes." Biden is also calling for a $3,600-per-child tax cut for families, an $800 average tax break for "front-line workers" and a 25% minimum tax on billionaires, according to a newly released campaign plank.

The expiration of the Trump tax cuts will restore the unlimited federal deduction for state and local taxes, which Republicans had capped at $10,000 in the 2017 law. Republicans broadly support preserving the cap, with some exceptions, while most Democrats want to lift it.

Judges and the Supreme Court

The contrast: Their track records tell a clear story. Trump has picked young conservative judges to serve on the federal bench, while Biden has picked liberals with a focus on professional and personal diversity.

One of the clearest contrasts is what kinds of judges Trump and Biden would pick for lifetime appointments on the federal courts. A simple way for voters to think about it is whether they prefer new judges with the conservative views of Justice Neil Gorsuch, Trump's first Supreme Court pick, or with the liberal views of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Biden's (so far only) high court pick.

As president, Trump nominated young conservative judges who will serve for generations. Biden has focused on finding judges with diverse backgrounds and résumés, including more civil rights lawyers and public defenders.

Perhaps the biggest question is whether a Supreme Court vacancy will open up in the next four years. The presidential election winner and the party that controls the Senate would fill it.

The contrast: Trump is pushing a 10% across-the-board tariff on imports; Biden's White House opposes that, saying it would raise inflation.

Trump, long a skeptic of U.S. trade deals, has proposed to impose a 10% tariff on all imported goods if he returns to the White House. He recently told Fox News that it could be 60% — or potentially “more than that” — on imports of Chinese goods.

Biden opposes that idea. In a memo over the weekend, the White House slammed the idea of "across-the-board tariffs that would raise taxes and prices by $1,500 per American family," without naming Trump; it referred to an estimate by the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank, that Trump's 10% tax on imports could cost an average American household $1,500 per year.

Biden, instead, has sought to boost domestic manufacturing with major federal investments in semiconductors and electric vehicles.

Foreign policy and NATO

The contrast: Biden favors Ukraine aid, while Trump is skeptical of it; Biden supports NATO and a traditional view of American power, while Trump has criticized NATO and voiced some isolationist views.

The clearest example of the foreign policy differences between the two concerns the fate of Ukraine, which is running low on ammunition and says it needs U.S. assistance to continue holding off Russia’s aggression. Biden is an ardent proponent of helping Ukraine, while Trump has poured cold water on U.S. aid to Ukraine and successfully pressured House Republicans to block it since they took the majority in January 2023.

And that points to a deeper divide: Biden is an outspoken supporter of the NATO alliance as a bulwark against adversaries like Russia and China and of preserving the post-World War II order. Trump has dialed up his criticisms of NATO and aligned with a growing isolationist wing in the U.S. that wants to be less involved in global affairs. Trump recently said that as president, he “would encourage” Russia “to do whatever the hell they want” to member countries who are “delinquent” in their dues.

Biden Approved Secret Nuclear Strategy Refocusing on Chinese Threat

In a classified document approved in March, the president ordered U.S. forces to prepare for possible coordinated nuclear confrontations with Russia, China and North Korea.

A profile view of President Biden speaking at a podium while wearing a blue suit.

By David E. Sanger

David E. Sanger has written about American nuclear strategy for The New York Times for nearly four decades.

President Biden approved in March a highly classified nuclear strategic plan for the United States that, for the first time, reorients America’s deterrent strategy to focus on China’s rapid expansion in its nuclear arsenal.

The shift comes as the Pentagon believes China’s stockpiles will rival the size and diversity of the United States’ and Russia’s over the next decade.

The White House never announced that Mr. Biden had approved the revised strategy, called the “Nuclear Employment Guidance,” which also newly seeks to prepare the United States for possible coordinated nuclear challenges from China, Russia and North Korea. The document, updated every four years or so, is so highly classified that there are no electronic copies, only a small number of hard copies distributed to a few national security officials and Pentagon commanders.

But in recent speeches, two senior administration officials were allowed to allude to the change — in carefully constrained, single sentences — ahead of a more detailed, unclassified notification to Congress expected before Mr. Biden leaves office.

“The president recently issued updated nuclear-weapons employment guidance to account for multiple nuclear-armed adversaries,” Vipin Narang, an M.I.T. nuclear strategist who served in the Pentagon, said earlier this month before returning to academia. “And in particular,” he added, the weapons guidance accounted for “the significant increase in the size and diversity” of China’s nuclear arsenal.

In June, the National Security Council’s senior director for arms control and nonproliferation, Pranay Vaddi, also referred to the document , the first to examine in detail whether the United States is prepared to respond to nuclear crises that break out simultaneously or sequentially, with a combination of nuclear and nonnuclear weapons.

The new strategy, Mr. Vaddi said, emphasizes “the need to deter Russia, the PRC and North Korea simultaneously,” using the acronym for the People’s Republic of China.

In the past, the likelihood that American adversaries could coordinate nuclear threats to outmaneuver the American nuclear arsenal seemed remote. But the emerging partnership between Russia and China, and the conventional arms North Korea and Iran are providing to Russia for the war in Ukraine have fundamentally changed Washington’s thinking.

Already, Russia and China are conducting military exercises together . Intelligence agencies are trying to determine whether Russia is aiding the North Korean and Iranian missile programs in return .

The new document is a stark reminder that whoever is sworn in next Jan. 20 will confront a changed and far more volatile nuclear landscape than the one that existed just three years ago. President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia has repeatedly threatened the use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine, including during a crisis in October 2022, when Mr. Biden and his aides, looking at intercepts of conversations between senior Russian commanders, feared the likelihood of nuclear use might rise to 50 percent or even higher.

Mr. Biden, along with leaders of Germany and Britain, got China and India to make public statements that there was no role for the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine, and the crisis abated, at least temporarily.

“It was an important moment,” Richard N. Haass, a former senior State Department and National Security Council official for several Republican presidents, and the president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, noted in an interview. “We are dealing with a Russia that is radicalized; the idea that nukes wouldn’t be used in a conventional conflict is not longer a safe assumption.”

The second big change arises from China’s nuclear ambitions. The country’s nuclear expansion is running at an even faster pace than American intelligence officials anticipated two years ago, driven by President Xi Jinping’s determination to scrap the decades-long strategy of maintaining a “minimum deterrent” to reach or exceed the size of Washington’s and Moscow’s arsenals. China’s nuclear complex is now the fastest growing in the world.

Although former President Donald J. Trump confidently predicted that Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, would surrender his nuclear weapons after their three in-person meetings, the opposite happened. Mr. Kim has doubled down, and now has more than 60 weapons, officials estimate, and the fuel for many more.

That expansion has changed the nature of the North Korean challenge: When the country possessed just a handful of weapons, it could be deterred by missile defenses. But its expanded arsenal is fast approaching the size of Pakistan’s and Israel’s, and it is large enough that it could, in theory, coordinate threats with Moscow and Beijing.

It was only a matter of time before a fundamentally different nuclear environment began to alter American war plans and strategy, officials say.

“It is our responsibility to see the world as it is, not as we hoped or wished it would be,” Mr. Narang said as he was leaving the Pentagon. “It is possible that we will one day look back and see the quarter-century after the Cold War as nuclear intermission.”

The new challenge is “the real possibility of collaboration and even collusion between our nuclear-armed adversaries,” he said.

So far in the presidential campaign, the new challenges to American nuclear strategy have not been a topic of debate. Mr. Biden, who spent much of his political career as an advocate of nuclear nonproliferation, has never publicly talked in any detail about how he is responding to the challenges of deterring China’s and North Korea’s expanded forces. Nor has Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic Party’s nominee.

At his last news conference in July , just days before he announced he would no longer seek the Democratic nomination for a second term, Mr. Biden acknowledged that he had adopted a policy of seeking ways to interfere in the broader China-Russia partnership.

“Yes, I do, but I’m not prepared to talk about the detail of it in public,” Mr. Biden said. He made no reference to — and was not asked about — how that partnership was altering American nuclear strategy.

Since Harry Truman’s presidency, that strategy has been overwhelmingly focused on the Kremlin’s arsenal. Mr. Biden’s new guidance suggests how quickly that is shifting.

China was mentioned in the last nuclear guidance, issued at the end of the Trump administration, according to an unclassified account provided to Congress in 2020. But that was before the scope of Mr. Xi’s ambitions was understood.

The Biden strategy sharpens that focus to reflect the Pentagon’s estimates that China’s nuclear force would expand to 1,000 by 2030 and 1,500 by 2035, roughly the numbers that the United States and Russia now deploy. In fact, Beijing now appears ahead of that schedule, officials say, and has begun loading nuclear missiles into new silo fields that were spotted by commercial satellites three years ago.

There is another concern about Beijing: It has now halted a short-lived conversation with the United States about improving nuclear safety and security — for example, by agreeing to warn each other of impending missile tests, or setting up hotlines or other means of communication to assure that incidents or accidents do not escalate into nuclear encounters.

One discussion between the two countries took place late last fall, just before Mr. Biden and Mr. Xi met in California , where they sought to repair relations between the two countries. They referred to those talks in a joint statement, but by that time the Chinese had already hinted they were not interested in further discussions, and earlier this summer said the conversations were over. They cited American arms sales to Taiwan, which were underway long before the nuclear safety conversations began.

Mallory Stewart, the assistant secretary for arms control, deterrence and stability at the State Department, said in an interview that the Chinese government was “actively preventing us from having conversations about the risks.”

Instead, she said, Beijing “seems to be taking a page out of Russia’s playbook that, until we address tensions and challenges in our bilateral relationship, they will choose not to continue our arms control, risk reduction and nonproliferation conversations.”

It was in China’s interest, she argued, “to prevent these risks of miscalculation and misunderstanding.”
