Colon – Panama

Last updated on January 30th, 2024 at 09:46 am

Welcome to Colon, a bustling city located at the Caribbean entrance of the Panama Canal. Discover the rich history of the region at the Panama Canal Expansion Observation Center, explore the colorful architecture of Colon's historic district, or take a boat tour through the Gatun Lake. Immerse yourself in the vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture, sample delicious local cuisine, and witness the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal.

Check out these excursions in Colon .

The temperature in Colon has little variation during the year. It ranges from a low of 77 degrees F to a high of 86 degrees F. Seldom does the range dip below 75 degrees F or rise above 89 degrees F. It tends to be hot and oppressive year-round.

The official currency of Panama is the Balboa. The currency is named after Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa, who discovered the Pacific Ocean in 1513. One Balboa is divided into 100 cents. One Balbo equals one U.S. dollar, and the dollar is legally circulated in Panama. The day-to-day currency used in Panama is the U.S. Dollar, and there are no paper Balboas, although there are Panamanian coins. Traveler’s checks are not accepted, but major credit and debit cards are.

Wireless Internet:

There is an internet cafe in the Colon 2000 Cruise Terminal that offers WiFi.

Spanish is the official language of Panama. There is a small smattering of English spoken and an even smaller amount of French.

Where You Dock in Colon – Panama

Colon has two cruise terminals. The Cristobal Pier is located in Colon, Panama, on the eastern side of the canal. That facility is seldom used anymore.

Cruise ships arrive at Colon 2000 or Pier 6 of Cristobal Port on the south side of Limon Bay.

Cruise passengers will board for shore excursions right outside the terminal. If you take an organized tour, your bus will be in the parking area just a few yards from the gangway.

Getting Around Colon – Panama

Walking: It is not advised to walk around Colon, as it is not safe.

Taxi: There are taxi services in Colon, and the fares are relatively inexpensive. Taxi prices are fixed by the central desk in the Colon 2000 center.

Car: There are several rental car services in Colon. The majority of the rental cars are manual transmission, and you will have to pay an additional charge if you want a car with  automatic transmission.

To rent a car, you will need an I.D., a valid driver’s license approved for driving in Panama and hold third-party auto insurance. Hertz, Budget, Thrifty, Mexrentacar, Dollar, and Sunnycars have locations in Colon. Driving is on the right-hand side of the road in Panama.

Shopping In Colon – Panama

The Colon Free Zone is primarily a commercial park where companies import and export products free of duty. It is not set up to sell individual items to tourists. If you are able to make a purchase, your item will be sent to Tocumen International Airport in Panama City to be retrieved when you depart. If you are part of a cruise, this procedure will probably not work well for you.

There is a shopping center, strip mall type, across from the pier. It contains a grocery store, a sandwich shop, and souvenir stores.

Dining In Colon – Panama

The cafe at Cristobal Pier has bar-type snacks. The Colon 2000 port complex also houses restaurants Arrecifes and Rotana Cafe.

Arrecifes serves Caribbean, Latin cuisine and seafood.

You will find pizza, lemon chicken and vegetarian options at Rotana Cafe.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rotana Café (@rotanacafepanama)

In Colon, the Grand Cafe has Lebanese and Mediterranean cuisine and the Restaurante Nuevo 2 Mares offers authentic Panamanian cuisine.

Things To Do in Colon – Panama

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Port Colon 2000 (@portcolon2000)

As was mentioned, Colon is primarily a base for day trips with little in the way of attractions for tourists. Again, it is not a city you will want to traverse on your own due to safety concerns.

Here are the few attractions in Colon:

Gatun Locks: These are the largest locks in the Panama Canal and are open to visitors from 9 am until 4 pm seven days a week. Use a taxi service to negotiate round trip service to this area.

Colon City Tour: There are coach and taxi-based city tours. Most of the tours will show you the New Washington Hotel that overlooks the entrance to the canal. A stone-built Episcopal Christ Church Cathedral and a monument to Christopher Columbus are the main sights on the tour.

Portobelo: In old Spanish, this name meant “beautiful port.” Located in the northern part of the Isthmus of Panama, Portobelo is about 20 miles northeast of Colon. There are the ruins of five Spanish forts and incredible sea views.

Duration 3 hrs

Hailed as a major feat of early 20th-century civil engineering and one of the most testing building projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal served to revolutionize global shipping when it was inaugurated after 10 solid years of construction work in 1914. Removing the need to navigate either around the notoriously hazardous Cape Horn in the south of Chile or the equally tricky Strait of Magellan, the 48-mile ship canal provided an easily navigable link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans via the Caribbean Sea.

Your trip to this iconic structure begins with a short drive to the waterway’s Expansion Observatory Platform to learn a little about the current construction project that aims to add capacities for a larger shipping lane by building a new and bigger set of locks. This experience at the canal will give you the opportunity to see the former Canal Zone, residential and military facilities that were built by USA at the beginning of the last century. Your fascinating tour of the Panama Canal then comes to a close with your return to the ship.

Explore the ruins of a massive fortress built centuries ago to protect transatlantic trade and view a modern set of locks that have greatly expanded the Panama Canal and increased shipping. San Lorenzo Fort is considered such an extraordinary example of Spanish military architecture that UNESCO deemed it a World Heritage site. While walking through the ruins, you will see old cannons aimed over the sea, earthwork battlements, underground tunnels and rooms that were prisons. All the while, the guide will describe the history of the fort, dating back to 1595 when King Phillip II ordered its construction to protect the mouth of the Chagres River. Visiting the Aqua Clara Visitor Center will be equally enlightening as you will learn how the newest locks there enable much larger ships to pass through the Panama Canal. The three-chambered Aqua Clara locks are marvels of engineering and look especially impressive when seen from the center’s observation deck.

  • Walk through the ruins of a Spanish-built colonial fort that is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Admire the sweeping views of the Chagres River from the strategically located fort.

Agua Clara Locks & Panama City

Duration 6 1/2 hrs

See the Panama Canal’s newest, most innovative set of locks and enjoy a panoramic tour of the surrounding area. The Agua Clara locks were built to provide an alternative lane for ships that are too long and too wide to pass through the canal’s original locks. The guide will explain their complex operation in easy-to-understand terms so you can truly appreciate this marvel of engineering. You will also learn some the fascinating history of the land bordering the canal, an area known as the Canal Zone until Panama assumed control of it in 1999. The Amador Islands that you will see just offshore are manmade with rock excavated from the canal when it was dug. For centuries, it was the starting point for pack animals to carry cargo across the isthmus to the Caribbean Sea.

Colón Panama Cruise Port: Tips, Attractions and Weather

The Colón cruise port is the gateway to the Panama Canal on the Caribbean side and one of the more popular stops on “exotic” western Caribbean cruises.

The most popular western Caribbean cruises usually visit some combination of Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel. The word “exotic” in exotic western cruises promoted by cruise lines usually means the ship will go to one or more ports of call on on the Central American coast. Roatan, Belize City, Costa Rica and Panama’s Colón lead the list.

Cruise visitors usually arrive at Colón 2000 or Pier 6 of Cristóbal port on the south side of Limon Bay. The location on the bay is important to know for the sake of seeing as much as possible in the shortest amount of time.

Colón is the provincial capital, and the province has Central America’s largest port system.

Like other Central American countries with a Caribbean coast, Panama offers more in the way of ecotourism, history, culture and education than just plain beaches. In fact, Colón is not the place to go for beaches. So plan excursions accordingly.

Quick Travel Tips

Where is colón panama.

Colón Panama is a little more than 200 miles east to southeast of Puerto Limon in Costa Rica. Because of their closeness, they often are included on the same cruise itinerary. But like Limon, Colón is one of the southernmost ports of any western Caribbean cruise at 900 miles south of Cozumel. For that reason, Colón is usually on exotic western Caribbean itineraries of at least seven days.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

A cruise to Panama might lead someone to think that the main attraction is the Panama Canal and the famous locks that raise and lower ships as they cross between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

They would be right, but Colón has more to offer.

Walking Around Attractions

Colón cruise port map.

The area around the Colón 2000 terminal is known for its restaurants and shopping. The area around the nearby Cristóbal port is known for its craft markets.

The two locations are about three miles apart and take 10 minutes to reach by regulated taxis.

It is worth noting that Colón has a reputation for street crime, but government authorities have made a strong effort to make tourists feel secure within the duty-free zone. Make sure to use a registered taxi when traveling outside of the zone and don’t display wallets or jewelry. When possible, walk with or among other tourists.

Colon 2000 is a growing tourism district with restaurants, shops, casinos and duty free shopping mall. The mall calls itself, “The only tourism and tax-free mall in the Caribbean”, although some other ports with malls beg to differ. The mall has dozens of shops representing some major international brands.

The Panama government has invested $900 million in a major city renovation. It includes refurbished streets, improved sewage systems and upgrades of public spaces and buildings.

Otherwise, the city doesn’t have much to see or do outside of Colón 2000. It is one of the few Caribbean ports without any guided city shore excursions at this time. Most cruise visitors opt for the shore excursions that take them outside of the city.

Shore Excursions

The most popular shore excursions take cruise travelers to the Panama Canal locks.

For first-time visitors, it is useful to know that the Panama Canal was made possible because of the narrow width of Panama between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and a huge investment of money and labor (as well as lives). It also was made possible by the presence of the sprawling Lake Gatún near Colón.

Limon Bay connects with Lake Gatún at the Gatún Locks, the first of the famous locks on the Atlantic side that raise and lower ships going through Panama and that need to adjust to different terrains and sea levels.

The lake and the locks are only about a 25 minute drive from Colón via taxi or excursion bus.

A tour of the locks is not the most exciting experience for a cruise traveler in the Caribbean , but it is one of the most impressive and educational excursions. The tour is highly recommended for families in particular.

Anyone on a tight schedule can visit the locks and return to Colón within a few hours. Other visitors usually combine the locks with other activities including a kayak or canoe tour around Lake Gatún to view the numerous species of wildlife that live there. Less active people can take boat tours.

Other Attractions

Two of the next best attractions in the area are in opposite directions of each other along the Atlantic coast.

Fort San Lorenzo, one of the oldest Spanish forts in America, lies about 45 minutes west of Colón. Built in 1597, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was designed to protect the mouth of Chagres River. A four- to five-hour tour that includes both the fort and the Gatún locks will cost about $100 per person with discounts for children.

The Chagres was an entry point for boats that traveled upstream to reach Venta de Cruces. From that point, they walked to Panama City on a trail Camino de Cruces.

Cruise visitors to Colon also can go to Panama City on a much quicker shore excursion than early settlers. They can take a train or excursion bus from the Colon docks on a one-hour ride across the country. It includes a tour of the historical Panama City as well as a visit to the Miraflores Locks. Prices usually range from about $75 to $150 depending on the length, mode of transportation and other factors.

Portobelo National Park is another UNESCO World Heritage site located about an hour east of Colón. Christopher Columbus discovered and named the landing site Portobelo, which is Italian for “beautiful port,” in 1502.

Francisco Valverde y Mercado founded the city of San Felipe de Portobelo in 1597. The Spaniards shipped gold and silver from Peru, unloaded it at Panama City and carried it on mules across the isthmus to Portobelo. Visitors can see the remains of the original fortifications that protected the plunder from pirates.

Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Colón is known for the above shore excursions, but it’s not known as a beach destination.

Although Panama has its share of good beaches, most of them are located elsewhere, like Bocas del Toro.

Cruise visitors to Colon with a passion for beaches can go to Playa La Angosta, which is about a 40 minute drive from Colon, or to Isla Grande, an island about an hour away.

Shopping / Restaurants

Visitors can start their shopping at the modest Colón 2000 mall right by the cruise docks. It is known for a handful of shops, restaurants, a casino and a safe environment. For safety reasons, tourists should not venture outside of the mall unless by taxi or excursion bus.

Colón claims the second largest duty-free shopping zone in the world.  The much bigger opportunity lies at the Colón Free Zone southeast of the cruise docks. It has more than 3,000 companies represented on more than 1,000 acres of land.

Cristobal Pier on the eastern side of the Panama Canal has an active crafts market.

Another interesting option is for passengers to hop on a train and go to Panama City. The distance is 46 miles, and the ride lasts about an hour. Passengers can board the train at the Atlantic Passenger Station in Mount Hope near the Port of Cristobal. It is a mile and a half southwest of the cruise terminal. Multiple cruise lines offer this trip as an excursion.

Getting Around / Transportation

Colón is better known as a port where cruise passengers take excursions into the countryside or over to Panama City rather than staying in the city. Although taxi service is available in Colón, there are few options for traveling short distances.

“Rather than spending the day in Colon, many cruise passengers choose instead to participate in shore excursions arranged by their ships or tours organized independently,” as one cruise line said.

Panama weather on the Caribbean coast enjoys drier weather from late winter to early summer and wetter weather from early summer to late fall.

The wet weather in the second half of the year is the result of the Caribbean hurricane season. It brings heavier rains to the Caribbean and parts of Central America. Panama rarely gets hit by a hurricane, but instead has spikes in rain.

Temperatures are warm throughout the year with average highs nearing 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius.

My husband and I are going on a 10 night western Caribbean cruise that has a stop at Colon, Panama.  We booked it while we were on a cruise.  The agent told us there was an excursion there that went through the Panama Canal.  Has anyone taken that excursion?  What did you think about?

What other excursions are there in Colon, Panama?

This is the one we plan on booking:

We went on this tour in March when we were in Colon on Vision of the Seas.  I do not know if it was a common experience or not but I  have to say the logistics were frustrating.  1-1/2 hours from port to the ferry. Then we waited well over an hour for the Canal pilot to show up. By the time he arrived, the security gates had been closed so we then waited another 35 minutes or so for security to arrive and unlock the gate for the pilot.

When we finally set off and got to the first lock, we again waited per canal rules for other ships to fill the space - in our case a container ship small enough to use the old locks.

Then another 1-1/2 hour back to port. Due to all the delays we did not arrive back to port until more than 1 after announced all aboard time. We met the bus at 6:15 sm and did not arrive back until 5:40 pm. It was a very long day with lots of just sitting around.  Lunch was just so-so.  Cold drinks (water, grape drink) were plentiful.

Although we were happy to experience the locks, enjoyed the engineering marvel and got some great photos we agreed we would not repeat this experience.

it was not clear to us who was in charge of arranging the pilot (the tour co or the ferry co) but clearly some poor communication.

I've put this in our Cruise Planner for both our cruises visiting Panama, both of which were cancelled 😞  Still waiting to decide about our third attempt at visiting Panama next January.

Talked to friends about this one and all share much the same experience as @kccrzr

They all recommend visiting one of the landside places (one's a hotel observation deck) that lets you see LOTS of the canal and lock activity. Another is a "guided tour/narration" that was much more informational than a boat ride.

Nothing in our CP yet for next year, but I'll be looking closely at options besides the Ferry this time. We're on Radiance and there's nothing in CP yet since this is a brand new itinerary.

orville99 -  The excursion you are planning on booking, is it through Royal?

I looked on our reservation before I posted my questions, there are not any excursions listed yet.

Yes it is. Just booked this excursion for our February 22, 2023 cruise.

Wonders of Engineering: Panama Canal Locks and Culebra Cut Cruise 07:30 AM

I have visited the Canal and sailed through it twice.  I have also visited the Welland Canal locks near Niagara Falls.  I would suggest you take a tour that visits the canal to observe the workings of the canal rather than taking a ferry tour going through one of the locks.  The ferry tour will waste a lot of time as reported by another here.

For us, it is a long-standing bucket list item, and regardless of the logistics, IMHO the only way to properly experience the canal is to actually be in the locks on a boat.

Grew up 90 miles away from the Welland Canal, and have driven past it too many times to count. The only time I really appreciated its grandeur was the one time I had the opportunity to actually be on board a ship going through it. There is no comparison between the two experiences. It is like the experiential difference between watching the Jet Boats take on the rapids in the Niagara river from Niagara on the Lake and actually being on the boat when it becomes completely submerged as it goes up river.

I was on an NCL cruise, but took the excursion that took the smaller passenger ferry type boat all the way through the canal to the Pacific Ocean.  I don't recommend this tour if you are the type of person that needs things to run like clockwork or someone that cannot stand idle time.  It is not for you.  There are many factors involved in determining how fast the ferry will make its pass through the canal.  The ferry is at the mercy of the timing of other ships in the canal.  Each lock must be filled up with multiple ships before it can be filled/emptied.  They don't just do one boat at a time.  There is an entire process of lining up these vessels.  Some (all?) of them need to be secured to the sides.  As discussed above, there is significant waiting time at multiple times through the trip -- 20-30-45 minutes each time.  It happens.  Be prepared for it.  This will be a very long day.  You will likely be exhausted and can't wait to get back to the ship before it is over.  Our excursion was 2 or 3 hours longer than was advertised.  I forget exactly.  We got back to the ship well after dark and well after dinnertime.  Most, if not all, of that delay was while on the ferry boat.  We had no issues with the bus or getting access to anything.  I saw no incompetence anywhere.  Just unlucky timing.

It will also very likely be hot and muggy with a good chance of some rain.  You should expect to be perspiring.  You're in a tropical rainforest location.

All that said... I loved this excursion and highly recommend it for anyone that is agreeable to these conditions and wants to see the canal up close.  It's a great opportunity for photos and videos.  It's an experience of a lifetime.  I will do it again if I ever do another Canal cruise.

But if you aren't up to the task, don't go.  For the last 2-3 hours on the ferry, there were multiple people who were doing nothing but loudly complaining and whining about how horrible it was.  And they were going to fight for a refund, etc.   They stopped watching anything going by them or around them hours before the excursion ended and just sat in their seats complaining and fanning themselves.

We just did this excursion on our April  Vision of the Seas sailing. It was much like the previous poster said about the day. We arrived back to the ship past the all aboard time but obviously they waited for our return. We had 6 buses on this tour. With that being said, I am glad to have done the excursion but once is enough for me. Being up close to the workings of the canal was very interesting.

This.  Exactly.  Did it several years ago just like this.  We thoroughly enjoyed it.  Definitely not for someone who is sensitive to heat or impatient.  But bucket list stuff for me.

Spend and extra 4 to 6 days on the cruise and do a full transit east to west or west to east. Much more enjoyable and amazing.

not everyone wants to fly. I have the radiance 10 day to colon Panama and no excursions came up yet but I was also interested.

I'm very happy going out of Galveston and that we can get to Panama out of Galveston.  I'm on the jan 10th. Only one I could fit in before John's bella cruise flying to miami for that march 2023.

Thank you rcl for giving us a few new ports.

I'd already booked carnival out of Galveston for exactly the same reason, then out of the blue rcl pops up 3 to Panama from Galveston.  So easy to do round trips I can drive to. Panama and Costa Rica and Columbia and ABC is why I booked the one carnival. Didnt know rcl would also get me there. .. nice!

Have you priced airfare? Oasis march 2023 is all the flying I want to pay for but I'm sure for you it's easy to say forget the price and do a flight to both coasts. Air fare lately you just dont know and it's one more thing to worry about.

You got to do what is comfortable for you. Understand.

I thought the Radiance was finishing with a full transit which would only require one-way air?

We just completed the repositioning on Adventure, which was originally scheduled to stop at Costa Rica, Colon and Cartagena. Just before sailing the stop at Colon was cancelled, supposedly because the channel hadn’t been dredged as promised. I don’t know if this was true or not.

We hadn’t booked any excursions because I had already come to the conclusion that there would be a lot of hanging around. I have already experienced several minor locks and I think doing a full transit sometime would probably satisfy any desire I have to do Panama Canal without hanging around for buses, boats etc.

Yes in april it does finish with a full transit. How is that only one airfare unless someone lives in Galveston which I dont. I'm about 6 hours away. So it helps not at all lol to what leave my car home and have to fly from Dallas to houston and then a extra shuttle to Galveston.

Imo the 3 ten days round trips which go to colon Panama jan 30, feb 27 and march 27 are better for us Texans. A lot are booking the 9 day to coco cay b2b with the 10 day to panama. Lots of excitement for the b2bs. New ports.

Havent heard anyone who lives somewhere in texas excited about the transit. Texas is  big state. Have to get to Galveston which I think you missed lol. But that's ok. We are very happy with what we got.

I live in Texas so no, didn’t miss it at all and I can understand the excitement for different ports from Galveston instead of repeating the same old itinerary.

Yes, Texas is a big state but there are options. We just took the Adventure from Galveston, which had similar logistics.

I did a Panama Canal cruise back in 2018 but it was on NCL.  the ferry I paid for was called "Cruise Gatun Lake And Panama Canal".  This description says "Panama Canal by Ferry  Experience the full wonder of crossing the Panama Canal by ferry boat on this daylong adventure. You’ll travel by ship's tender to the Gatun Yacht Club to board your transportation for the narrated drive through the isthmus to the small village of Gamboa. Here, you’ll board your ferry for your canal transit through two sets of locks. You’ll cross the Gaillard Cut and enter the Pedro Miguel Locks, which will lower your vessel 28 feet on its way to the Pacific. Your boat will settle on Miraflores Lake and then you’ll sail over to the Miraflores Locks. Enjoy a light lunch during your scenic cruise of the lake and locks. Your canal experience ends at the port of Balboa where you'll board your transportation back to the ship."  I paid $189.00.  For me, it was well worth it.  I hope you have the same one available.  I even had the opportunity to take a picture of my hand touching the canal lock.  I know it took a long time to get through the canal (waiting for the lock to fill up with other boats) but we did have a guide to explain everything & the lunch was very good.  I would do this again if given the opportunity.

Thanks

Carnival Opens Bookings For 2026-27 Cruises from Tampa and Mobile

  • September 4, 2024

Carnival Paradise in Tampa

Carnival Cruise Line has opened bookings for its 2026-27 sailings from Tampa and Mobile, offering cruises to The Bahamas, the Caribbean and the Panama Canal.

“As America’s cruise line, we continue to sail from more U.S. homeports than any other line and our 2026-27 offerings from Tampa and Mobile are great examples of that commitment to provide our guests with the convenience of sailing from homeports that are a short drive away,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “With a variety of itineraries, many of which feature our own unique destinations Celebration Key and Half Moon Cay, our guests will have plenty of great vacation options, and our travel advisor partners will have some unique experiences to offer their clients.”

Marking 30 years of year-round sailing from Tampa, the cruise line will continue this tradition in 2026-27, with the Carnival Paradise based in Tampa year-round and Carnival Legend offering seasonal sailings.

The Carnival Paradise will offer a variety of cruises, including four-day Western Caribbean itineraries, four- to six-day Bahamas cruises and five- to six-day Western Caribbean voyages. Destinations include Cozumel, Mahogany Bay, Belize, Grand Cayman, Celebration Key, Princess Cays and Nassau.

From November 2026 to March 2027, the Legend will sail from Tampa on various Western Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries. These include six- and seven-day cruises visiting Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Costa Maya, Belize, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, Mahogany Bay, Celebration Key, Half Moon Cay and Nassau. Additionally, three eight-day Western Caribbean sailings and two eight-day Panama voyages, with stops in Limon, Costa Rica; Grand Cayman; and Colon, Panama, are available. Guests on these Panama sailings can purchase shore excursions to tour the Panama Canal. A 13-day Carnival Journeys cruise to Panama will also be offered, featuring ports in Aruba, Curacao, Amber Cove and Colon.

The Carnival Spirit will return to Mobile for its seasonal homeport with a special 16-day Carnival Journeys cruise that transits the Panama Canal. The voyage departs Seattle on October 8, 2026, with stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puntarenas, Costa Rica and Cartagena, Colombia. Earlier in the year, Carnival will offer a Carnival Journeys sailing from Mobile to Seattle in April 2026, marking the first cruises connecting the ship’s two seasonal homeports before its summer series in Alaska.

From October 2026 to March 2027, Carnival Spirit will resume its seasonal schedule from Mobile, featuring six-, seven- and eight-day Bahamas cruises. Six-day cruises will include stops at Celebration Key and either Nassau, Bimini, or Princess Cays. Seven-day cruises will visit Celebration Key, Key West, and either Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays and Nassau. Eight-day cruises will feature Key West, Celebration Key, Nassau and either Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays.

What to pack for a Panama Canal cruise

Cunard_Facebook_Panama Canal 2

Packing for a cruise that travels through the Panama Canal isn't all that different from packing for an itinerary for other tropical destinations. However, since the trip brings with it the bucket list experience of the all-day canal crossing, which can last 10 hours or more, you'll want to make sure to bring things to stay comfortable outside on deck and items to capture and truly enjoy this unique journey.

You'll also want to pack for the other destinations on your itinerary, whether they're Caribbean islands, other Central American ports or both.

Follow this Panama Canal cruise packing list to make sure you don't forget anything on your Central America cruise of a lifetime.

colon panama cruise excursions

Panama has a hot and humid, tropical climate, with temperatures that stay pretty constant throughout the year, in the mid- to high-80s Fahrenheit during the day and the mid-70s at night.

The rainy season generally lasts from May to December, bringing anywhere from 10 to 30 inches of rain, while the shorter dry season runs from January to May. As is typical in tropical destinations, showers can be brief, passing quickly before the sun comes back out.

Considering you're going to be outside for a long time watching your ship pass through 12 locks and travel across Gatún Lake, you'll want to pack to protect yourself rain or shine.

Sun protection

colon panama cruise excursions

It will take your ship at least 10 hours to traverse the entire Panama Canal, and since this crossing is such a unique experience, you'll want to be on deck for much of that time. This means you'll need ample protection from the already intense Panama sun, made more so as it reflects off the water.

Pack sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30; spray is convenient, but it doesn't provide as much coverage as lotion and is better for touch-ups. If you're not checking your luggage, purchase a set of small silicone squeeze bottles that meet TSA carry-on liquid requirements and fill them with sunscreen lotion.

If you're planning any snorkeling expeditions during the rest of the cruise, buy reef-safe sunscreen, which uses a physical barrier like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide rather than a chemical one. Don't forget lip balm with an SPF, too.

Bring sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection and a hat with a wide or floppy brim to shield your face from the sun. Choose one with a chin strap, so it doesn't blow off on the windy deck. A rashguard, swimshirt, quick-drying board shorts (or another quick-drying bathing suit) and a cover-up are useful if you want to take a quick dip the day of the crossing but don't want to miss anything by going back to your cabin to change.

Related: Packing for a cruise? These items aren't allowed on board

All of these items will also come in handy for any tropical beach ports on the itinerary before or after the Panama Canal crossing.

Comfortable clothing and shoes

Your Panama Canal cruise packing list should be full of cool and comfortable clothing to help you weather the Panamanian heat. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen are a better choice than synthetic ones like polyester. Shorts and T-shirts are safe bets, as are cotton skirts or sundresses.

If you plan on being up on deck in the early morning hours as your vessel enters the first set of locks, you might want to bring a lightweight sweatshirt, cotton sweater or casual button-down shirt that you can remove as the sun and heat become more intense.

A lightweight rain jacket or poncho will keep you dry during those brief tropical showers that can leave as quickly as they came. You'll definitely need wet-weather gear if you're cruising during the rainy season.

Since you might be standing for much of the day, pack comfortable shoes — whatever that means for you. Some people prefer sneakers or tennis shoes, while others like boat shoes or sandals.

Even if you love wearing flip-flops, pack a pair of sneakers or close-toed shoes if you've signed up for excursions during the rest of the cruise, such as a Panama City walking tour, visit to a coffee plantation or a hike through a rainforest.

Eveningwear

While you'll want to be comfortable and casual during the crossing and any excursions, you might need to pack dressier attire for the evenings.

Depending on the cruise line and onboard restaurants you select, dinners can be casual, dressy or semi-formal. Plus, cruises often have themed nights where passengers are invited to wear a certain color or costume. Check the cruise line's website for the most relevant information about what to pack for evening soirees.

If you don't have room to pack a multitude of dressy outfits, stick with neutral colors that you can dress up with accessories, like a basic black dress with a few scarves or different jewelry, or a tan suit with a few ties and pocket squares.

Items to help you capture the Panama Canal crossing

colon panama cruise excursions

If you're a serious photographer, pack a point-and-shoot or digital SLR camera with a decent zoom lens to capture the Panama Canal crossing and the scenery and wildlife you view along the journey. A tripod that wraps around the ship's railing, like ones made by GorillaPod, will come in handy for hands-free shooting and time-lapse photos and video.

Depending on the make and model of your cell phone, your camera might be sufficient to take high-quality pictures and videos — especially if you just want to capture memories for social media or a photo book when you come home. If your cell phone tends to lose battery power quickly, bring an external charging block, so you can stay juiced up all day and don't have to be tied to an outlet.

A waterproof phone case will be helpful in case it's raining on the day of the crossing. Plus, you can use it for beach, boating and snorkeling excursions the rest of the cruise.

If your phone doesn't already have a time-lapse feature, download an app designed for this purpose; going through each lock is a time-consuming process of entering the lock and having it filled or emptied to raise or lower the ship. Time-lapse videos that capture this process are very cool. You'll want a tripod that attaches to your phone for the best results.

Binoculars are useful for spotting wildlife on the banks of Gatún Lake. You might also want a small notebook to jot down notes, thoughts and cool things you see, as well as factoids from the onboard local guide providing commentary during the Panama Canal crossing.

Books about the Panama Canal and the surrounding region

If you're a reader who wants to glean all you can about this engineering marvel, pack a book that tells about the history and construction of the canal or download one onto your Kindle.

"The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870-1914," by David McCullough does an excellent job of capturing the tragedy and triumph involved in building the canal.

If you're traveling with kids, "What is the Panama Canal?" by Janet B. Pascal breaks it down in an accessible way designed for those aged 8 to 12.

"Silver People: Voices from the Panama Canal" by Margarita Engle talks about the human toll that was needed, and "Erased: The Untold Story of the Panama Canal" by Marixa Lasso recounts the history from the Panamian point of view.

Related: The best time to cruise the Panama Canal

If you want something that encompasses more about the region, especially if you'll be exploring Caribbean islands on your cruise, James Michener's classic "Caribbean: A Novel" takes you through 700 years of conquests, pirates, revolution and romance.

colon panama cruise excursions

While not necessary, a few optional items can make your trip more pleasant.

You'll be thankful for a portable fan charged via USB when you're standing on the deck during your crossing, embarking on a walking tour or waiting in line.

A wet bag to keep your phone and valuables dry is helpful for snorkeling trips, sunset cruises and jet skiing, and a lightweight nylon backpack that folds into itself will be great to hold what you need during city jaunts and day trips away from the ship.

Insect repellent will keep those pesky mosquitos, which can be brutal in Central America, especially after it rains, at bay.

Panama Canal cruise packing list

Here is a list of some essential items, as well as nice-to-haves, for your Panama Canal cruise adventure:

  • Comfortable warm weather clothing (shorts, skorts, skirts, T-shirts, tank tops, cotton or linen casual button-down shirts for layering)
  • Swimwear, including a rashguard, swim shirt, board shorts and/or beach coverup
  • Lightweight rain jacket
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Flip-flops or sandals
  • Evening attire for nicer dinners and events on the ship
  • Wide-brimmed or floppy sun hat, ideally with a chin strap
  • Toiletries and medications
  • Sunscreen (minimum 30 SPF and ideally reef-safe) and lip balm with sun protection
  • Sunglasses with UV protection
  • Insect repellent
  • Charging block
  • Waterproof phone case
  • Point-and-shoot or digital SLR camera (optional)
  • Tripod with wraparound stand
  • Small backpack (ideally a nylon one that folds into itself)
  • Books about the Panama Canal

Bottom line

Packing for a Panama Canal cruise is similar to other Caribbean sailings, but you'll want a few extra things that will help you enjoy — and mark — the most memorable day in your bucket list itinerary.

Photos and videos are fitting souvenirs of this event, so make sure you're prepared on the tech side. But since you'll also want to be in the moment and take in all the sights and sounds, dress comfortably and protect yourself from the elements. In that way, you can better enjoy the 48-mile ride without distraction.
