They aggressively threaten you with jail if you smoke a vape (water vapor) if you smoke outside of the small smoking area. I got stuck with harmful secondhand smoke and a headache just so I could hit a water vapor vape. Are you kidding me? The security acts like they’re going to hit you. Outrageous criminal behavior.

Misleading ad.

Was sent a discount voucher ,which I tried to redeem. "Sorry, you can only use this on future cruises! !!"

I have been on 13 cruises with Carnival…

I have been on 13 cruises with Carnival and I have never had the experience that some of the one star people are posting. A lot of things are policy and is clearly stated in the contract when people book. Also, people should immediately get their trip insured once they book (ie travel insurance) so that if they MUST cancel for a valid reason they are covered. I also notice that some of the reviews encourage people to book on Royal Caribbean, NCL or MSC. Beware of those reviews as well because they maybe fake. Overall there are some things that this company could change, but we have had more good experiences than bad. Here are a list of ships I’ve been on: Elation Fascination Freedom Glory Valor (three times) Triumph Breeze (two times) Dream Vista Mardi Gras As I stated, we have minimal complaints and have had more good times than bad! Definitely recommend this cruise line for families!

We went on a the carnival celebration

We went on a the carnival celebration. It was their newest largest ship at the time and it was amazing. The food was great..service was exceptional and shows were fantastic. Our CD was Lee and he knows how to make sure everyone has a good time! Highly recommend! I personally wouldn't sail anything smaller or shorter than a 7 day cruise....the shorter the cruise the more likely you will end up on more of a "party" ship rather than a vacation. If it can be considered a weekend get away I'd avoid it ...on all cruise lines but that's just me I get one vacation a year I'll make it the longest and get the most.out if it! Very highly recommend carnival Celebration, mardi Gras or Jubilee ships!

Less upkeep, but friendly staff

I went on a Carnival Cruise Line ship for the first time. If you go on a Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ship before going on Carnival then you will be let down. We went on Carnival Horizon which is newer than Harmony of the Sea, and Carnival does not do upkeep on their ships. That is for sure the price difference, along with all the differences in quality of meals, etc. There was rusted and broken dividers on our balcony, and MOLD in our room and showers, I did not expect that on a 6 year old ship! I will say that the staff was very friendly and sweet though🩷 Harmony of the Seas came out in 2016 and is much nicer and I couldn't spot one damage. I guess that's what you get when choosing the cheaper option. I'd much rather go on a Royal Caribbean Cruiseline ship any day!

Carnival Celebration

After carefully consideration and explanation of my needs; I was able to find the perfect room that would fit my mother needs. I agreed that I would placed my deposit on the vacation package that was offered. I was told I would be place in room XXXX and paid $300 deposit. I then was forwarded to a second agent to make sure my special requests were successfully noted in the account. After speaking with the second agent she informed me she didn’t know why I was placed in the room I was in. I then explained to her my mother’s needs and I was very well satisfied with the room I was in. This conversation then resulted to speaking to her supervisor. He then told me my room may be changed. I was uncomfortable with the changes and told him this was the reason why I paid the deposit. I was told to be contacted 48hours. I will not be removed from my room in the meanwhile will it’s further investigated. June 4th I received an updated email that my room has been changed. I called customer relations and spoken to guest resolution supervisor to ask why I was not notified about the changes. And why my room was changed without my agreement. I paid my deposit so it should have been honored to me. Once I spoken to the senior agent that explained it was an error that was made and for the amount I paid I was removed to what my total in price paid for. I would have to pay the amount the room cost and there’s no one that would help me in this matter to keep my room. I don’t agree with decision because this was something that should have been honored from an error that was made on Carnival Celebration behalf. In my opinion this was very unprofessionally handled without contacting the guest on the changes. I was just placed in a room what Carnival feels the funds I paid for good enough for. I was not even placed on the floor I was originally booked on. There wasn’t even any room/booking accommodation’s for the mishap on Carnival behalf.

Carnival Cruise Birthday Ruined

Had to cancel my cruise for June '25 because of another commitment and tried to transfer the deposit to another cruise this December and was told today they couldn't do it!! 😡 So Carnival pocket my substantial deposit and i'm left empty handed!! 🤬 I'm so ticked off!!! It was supposed to be my first cruise with them too!! Obviously I won't be booking with them ever again!! Especially since they knew it was for my 50th birthday!! #BeWarned Don't let them ruin your birthday too!! #AvoidCarnival

I wish I could give them a zero star

I wish I could give them a zero or minus rating but unfortunately there is no option for that and I had to give them 1 star. The people who work here are the worst xenophobic I have ever seen in my life. They are also a thief. They stole my hard-earned $2000 and did not let me board the ship. To be honest there was no good reason to deny my boarding. I will take legal action against them but I am facing a lot of unnecessary hassle for no reason. I could easily avoid that by choosing Royal Caribbean instead. Please please do not ever think about going to this Cruise line.

Date of experience : April 29, 2024

JUST DONT! I would give them negative stars if I could. I booked a cruise with them and was supposed to leave on June 15th. I called them 34 days away and had to cancel because my 12 year old daughter was rushed to the hospital and was diagnosed with CANCER. She is currently under going surgery for a massive tumor. I understand I didn't purchase the insurance but if there was every going to be an exception a child getting cancer should be it. I was told there is a group that grants exception for that kind of thing. I got the most cold response that its industry policy and that's why they offer the insurance so my request is denied. What kind of garbage company tells me its industry policy and hope you sail again soon when I tell you my child had cancer and is in surgery! When I tried to request another review I essential got told that was it end of story case closed. This company deserves to go out of business and doesn't deserve anyone's business. Clearly there is no exception to their policy so beware. They are all about the money and not people.

I am disgusted with how Carnival…

I am disgusted with how Carnival treated some friends of ours. They refused to let my friend on because her birth certificate was her original (which the team member checking us in said she accepts all the time). They were told they would be able to rebook or possibly get their money back and now Carnival is refusing to do either. They banked off of them and are refusing to make it right. I am disgusted with them and will NEVER give another cent to them. I will also ensure that everyone we come in contact with knows how they treated our friends and encourage them to use another cruise line. So disappointed in Carnival. We have cruised many times with Carnival and have loved it but NEVER AGAIN.

Waste of money

February 4-11 Australia. Very disappointed cruise. Very cheap and not caring. No fun. No performance. Rude comedian. Horrible food (I am a chef). No independent restaurants. Some Staff passive aggressive (not happy). Room and a balcony with a view was only a pleasure. DJ’s looks like self made and not professional starting at 11.30pm when I am sleeping. Cruise director young self indulgent unprofessional. As I said only the ocean view made our trip enjoyable. Carnival a cheap embarrassment for red necks and bogans. Never again!

The cruise isn’t that bad at all due to this morning waking up thinking we were gonna dock at princess Kay’s which we paid for only to be told at last minute while having breakfast that they were not stopping at the port for what reason was not told first cruise for me and my wife paid a lot of money to just stop and 1 island and be sailing the ocean the rest of the tour this has not been a good vacation should refund some type of credits besides the taxes First cruise with carnival and the last 1 as well to pay thousands of dollars to only be compensated for some taxes one of the worst vacations We’ve ever been on never again

Didnt expect these things after paying thousnads of dollar

Departure terminal port information not provided, had to call customer care multiple times, even after calling multiple times, they were not avle to tell to which port we need to go to board the ship. We called just 2hrs before our selected boarding time, still customer care was not able to tell us the port terminal from where ship departs, we had to roam around with our 4 bigger bags to figure out ourself which was teh departure terminal. Then Pixels gallery photo cost is too too much for a single photo, they are stealing away money from customers by showing them their good edited photos. jsut for one printout of portrait photo they were charging, $22. which doesnt include the digital copy of the photo & we need to pay $10 if u want digital copy on top of $22 for one photo click, so total we end up paying $32+taxes if we want to buy digital + physical copy & they are not giving oly digital copy, they were telling tehy will giv e digital copy only if we buy the physical copy also. Also they were threting us that if we dont buy soon teh prices wud go up once we reach miami port as we have to pay taxes on top of it. They were soo money minded that trying to steal money where ever they can.

Least genuine apology. Ever

After a rude interaction with a customer service agent, who hung up on me when I asked his name, I received a form letter apology today saying he is "receiving training". But also... They can not "locate" the staff member who had been assisting me with requests over the past 2 months. Can't locate. Their staff member! Needless to say, it was a bulls£1t apology and I don't believe a word.

My first and last time on a cruise with Carnival. Apart from the boat and food etc being very average, the staff were shocking. I booked two rooms and my kids (who were in one room) decided to leave the cruise in Sydney. Upon boarding after our day trip they gave my room to other passengers without even asking me. I booked and paid for that room, along with internet etc for the entire trip. The customer service staff both on and off the boat are shocking.

This cruise line has to be the bottom…

This cruise line has to be the bottom of the barrel. I would never sail with Carnival again. We had cruised b4 with NCL and it was night and day. The food at the buffet was the same nasty unseasoned food everyday. Very unimpressed

The website is the WORST

I don’t have any complaints about the actual cruise, but their website makes me want to shoot myself in the head every damn time. I cannot believe such a well established cruise line has such a crappy website.

I booked a cruise online and paid for…

I booked a cruise online and paid for the whole cruise at that time. Never was I advied that I had a deposit that was going to be charged. Also was told that I have up to September 2024 to cancel. After that, if I canceled my trip, I would get a fee. So after talking with my sister, she wasn't going to be able to go. So I canceled the cruise well before September. When they refunded my payment, they stated that they where going to deduct a deposit fee. I called several times to get a refund and they still will not refund me the deposit. Carival lost a customer for life over it. The sad part about all this is that it's only 100.00.

“Refund for fund”

Hi my name Dekendrick Johnson I was supposed to sail ship Valor February 29 out of New Orleans booking Z0H4M8 I'm having to cancel the trip due to my wife passing away January 1,2024 to a heart attack.I was texting to see if I could get a full refund.

“Stay away from them!”

Same food every night which tasted terrible. We had a storm and they never warned us. Deck flooded people were in pool and ship tilted and all water came out. My mother almost got hit by rolling table and they didn't care. Water park was slippery kids sliding all over my daughter fell and hurt herself, They had the guts to charge her for medical for $325. They over priced, credit cards frauds. My advise go somewhere else!

We chose the carnival celebration because of its roller coaster and it was broken the whole week. The kids were so disappointed. Guest services couldn't even care in the least. Also my daughter won a voucher in a raffle for the spa and the spa manager said she could only use it for a few certain things. It was $75 so we didn't use it. Also there were people smoking on the balcony's and we couldn't sit out much. We paid a lot for our 1 week a year trip and felt very let down. We will be going back to Norwegian

I returned from a cruise on the carnival valor on March 19,2024 and was shocked at the charges they put on my debit card. I put $500 cash against my charges while onboard and it is not reflected. I have been trying to contact customer care since I returmed home to no avail. Its amazing how easy it is to contact them before sailing but impossible to contact them post cruise. I am trying to get an itemized statement of my charges and an adjustment for the cash I paid that does not show.

Tip for consumers: My bill is not correct and I have been unable to contact anyone from the cruise ship to review my charges. I need to speak to someone about over charges on my statement.

Products used: I sailed the Carnival Valor on March 14 for 4 days.

Myself and My husband has been cruising every year since 2010. It's always been my gift to him so it was understood that I book and pay. Now this year my cruise was set for 11/27/23 however my husband just started a new job in another state so I asked can I do a name change or just go on the cruise alone and they said no because it was under my husbands promotion… so I was told all I could do was cancel and lose out on the money I paid…. So carnival allows me to book for he and I, cancel for he and I, but I can't go on the cruise that I booked, I just lose my money. I'm very disappointed in carnival… I'm thinking about changing cruise lines all together! I'm very hurt by this

Tip for consumers: Carnival don’t ask many questions when you spending your money but when somethings comes up on your end…. It’s 21 questions

I forgot my brand new clothes in my cabin, called the Mardigraw cruise line lost and found the same day! It took them weeks to notify me that they could not find my clothes. I did not call a week after, I called the same day that I unboarded the ship. Carnival Cruise, are you aware people are losing their belonging on your cruise ship? I paid a lot of money for myself and my family for this cruise, and still lost my clothes. If you forget any of your thing onboard, know that it's gone! I will not use Carnival Cruise or ever recommend them.

My bank limits me to 3000.00 a day and normally at any other casino in the states after midnight the bank card will reset itself but not tonight. I tried to pull another 1000.00 dollars twice but the request was declined. No big deal I never got that money, well guest services locked my card saying I owe them that money when I never received that 2000.00 again it was declined. I don't understand why the lady doesn't get it, I will go back down there this afternoon after all the charges post on my account from the bank. One of the head guys from the casino was at guest services laughing at me trying to explain my situation to the lady. That's enough to make anyone angry, it's definitely not customer service and I guess being a platinum customer means very little especially dropping 10-20k at the casino twice a year on Carnival

Q&A (21)

Is mrs elizabeth magie gomez human resources assistant manger.

To Whom it may concern, This is my 4th email, that I have sent regarding a cancelled cruise. I have been cruising with Carnival for a little while now and really enjoy the trips I take. I was suppose to cruise out on October 22,2022 and because my elderly father was diagnosed with cancer, (I was informed today) the physician wants to get his plan up and going. I found it very disappointing that Carnival is deciding not to give me my money back. It doesn't have to be money, I asked for a credit to cruise later; I was told that couldn't be done. It is not fair that I'm having $1733.00 taken away from me. Life is hard and if I could be on that ship on October 22,2022 I would've without a doubt. I would like for someone to take a look at my concern, address my concern, and return my funds or allow me to use this as a credit in the future. I'm hurt by the diagnosis of my father and to learn that Carnival will not assist in my time of need is very stressful. My booking for this cruise is B4W1B8, my PIN is 2221. I will await a resolution to my concern. Please allow my money to be returned or give me credit for another cruise. $1733.00 is not easy to come by. I can't imagine them being so greedy for money. I don't even want the money back, I just asked for a credit for a future cruise. I will take a cruise with Carnival in February 2023, I was told that someone would get back to me and I haven't received a call yet. Respectfully, LaShunda Culclager 972-801-8004

I went on my first Carnival cruise — these are the 2 reasons I might not do it again

  • I spent four nights on Carnival Cruise Line's new Carnival Firenze cruise ship.
  • The quality of the vacation reflects its relatively affordable fares.
  • I have two major gripes about my experience: the lackluster food and incessant upselling.

Insider Today

People love to hate Carnival Cruise Line. After sailing on the new Carnival Firenze , I now understand why: The food was as bad as the incessant upselling.

The company's ships have a reputation for being affordable but rowdy, so much so that it had once threatened to fine unruly travelers $500.

But this sour standing doesn't seem to be negatively impacting business. Its parent company, Carnival Corp , experienced "record" deposits and high-priced bookings in the first quarter of 2024.

Despite its growing popularity, I don't think I'll willingly book another Carnival cruise, or at least Carnival Firenze, again.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

And it's not for the reasons you might expect.

My four nights on Carnival Firenze weren't stellar — not because of the rambunctious crowd (shocker, I know), but because of the terrible food and annoyingly endless upselling .

Carnival certainly lives up to its reputation of having affordable cruises.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

The cheapest Carnival Firenze itinerary in 2024 is a four-night sailing for $359 per person, including taxes and fees. That's less than $90 a night for a hotel room at sea, unlimited food, onboard activities, and the chance to see Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico.

Not bad, considering new ships typically have a steep pricing premium (Royal Caribbean's new Icon of the Seas mega-ship starts at more than $260 a night).

The fares can’t be beat. And the quality of the food reflects that.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

Look, I'm not expecting caviar and freshly shaved truffles on every plate. I can respect a sloppy burger and simple pasta, as I expected for a Carnival cruise . And seeing complimentary dishes such as beef tartare was unexpectedly welcomed.

Unfortunately, everything I ate was mediocre.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

The best word to describe most of my Carnival Firenze meals is "sweet."

The honey-mustard dressing at the buffet salad station was so sugary it could've been a dessert. But even the thick, saccharine dressing couldn't moisten up the incredibly bone-dry chicken.

Sure, sure. Honey mustard is supposed to be jam-packed with sugar, and I poured it with a heavy hand. But I think a salad dressing shouldn't send diners into a sugar rush.

Some savory dishes were overpowered by unnecessary sweetness.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

My main dining room entrée of shrimp and fish cake could've been great. The shrimp was perfectly bouncy, and while the fish cake was questionably mushy, it was seasoned well with a garlicky, oniony dried spice mix.

Unfortunately, the accompanying tomato sauce, sweetened like it was meant to be a sorbet, lost the dish all of its accolades.

A good tomato sauce strikes a delicate balance between sweetness and acidity. This was just sugar — and a profound ability to make decent seafood taste bad.

The dining room's clams and linguine could've also been a win if not for some major issues.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

I didn't love that it came with only four or five clams, but I do love pasta dishes with a contrasting texture!

Unfortunately, said "texture" was a hard, small piece of plastic hidden among the mound of noodles.

If the food wasn’t sweet, it was heavy.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

The ship's Guy Fieri-branded burger joint accrued lines before it opened for lunch. I, drawn to hyped food places like a moth to a light, was excited by its popularity.

Unfortunately, I couldn't enjoy it for long. I hit a food coma about four bites into the decadently greasy pepperoni-pizza burger, served with a thick slab of fried mozzarella.

By day two, I began dreaming of light vegetables, freshness, and fiber.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

But the two complimentary dining venues that catered to these needs — the Fresh Creations salad stand and La Strada Grill with sandwiches and sides — were only open during the last day of the sailing. At that point, the lack of fiber had already done its damage.

I even tried ordering off the vegan menu for breakfast one morning. Unfortunately, I was denied my meatless dish: The waiter said vegan breakfasts had to be ordered the night before, a restriction I've yet to see on another cruise.

The mediocre food marred my experience, but it wasn't the worst part of my Carnival cruise.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

That title goes to the incessant, in-your-face upselling, done with a persistent annoyance reminiscent of an annoying fly buzzing around your home.

On paper, Carnival offers some ultra-cheap cruise fares . In reality, once you board the ship, you're met with an unsavory number of pay-to-play options that could quickly double your vacation cost.

Mass-market cruise lines have been increasingly upselling onboard amenities and activities.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

On Norwegian's newer ships, this includes slapping a $10 fee on the mini-golf course. On Royal Caribbean's latest vessel , this means paying $49 for a ropes course that could be completed in less than a minute.

But on Carnival , even complimentary venues had pay-to-play options.

For example, the buffet, where guests had to pay for chicken wings.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

Or the free dining room, where breakfast juices — shown by a waiter at each table — could be purchased for $5.

Looking for a midday snack? You could hit complimentary venues such as Il Mercato for sausages or the pizza stand for, well, pizza. Just be prepared to pay $6 if you want a Korean barbecue steak pie instead of pepperoni.

The dreaded dollar sign followed me day to night, on and off the ship.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

The nightly movie screenings were free to attend. But if you want a bag of buttery popcorn, you'll have to pay $4.

That's the same price guests had to pay if they wanted to take a shuttle from the port in Ensenada to downtown.

Even scheduled onboard activities had unnecessarily gratuitous upcharges.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

Tea bags during "Tea Time" were $1.50. Unaware of the price before being approached by the server, I declined on the principle of not wanting to pay.

A few minutes later, he returned to inform me that he did, in fact, have two free options stashed behind the up-charged ones: Lipton and Bigelow green tea — the only tea bags available at the buffet.

At breakfast, a server joked that my croissant and Lipton tea would cost $20.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

If I didn't know any better, I would've believed him. It seemed as if almost everything I wanted came with a sneaky price tag, as seemingly intended by Carnival's parent company.

Travelers spent more money aboard Carnival Corp's ships in the first quarter of 2024 than in the same time last year. To continue this success, Josh Weinstein, the president and CEO of Carnival Corp, told investors in March that the company would continue to "push and press" its cruise lines to "optimize and maximize both on the ticket and onboard spending."

In truth, the ship does have some redeeming qualities.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

The mini-golf course, waterslides, board games, and elevated ropes course were complimentary and a great way for families to pass sea days.

I arrogantly found the whole Italy-themed decor (it is called Firenze, after all) a bit tacky. But if you love the idea of a garish Las Vegas-ified Italy — think, the Walmart version of the Venetian — you could find some joy in the kitsch.

But these amenities weren’t enough to overlook the mediocre food and difficult-to-resist upselling.

carnival cruise reviews complaints

Cruises are meant to be relaxing and fun. There's nothing relaxing about having to think about your finances whenever you're met with a pay-to-play option, which felt constant on Carnival Firenze. Nor is there anything fun about chewing into a piece of hidden plastic.

If you want the vacation of your dreams on Carnival's new ship, be prepared to pay up. But at that point, you may as well save that money for another ship — or cruise line.

Date of experience : 29 April 2024

6 top luxury alaska cruises for 2024 & beyond.

Book a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to The Great Land on one of these top luxury ships.

Top Luxury Alaska Cruises

Cruising to Alaska on a small luxury ship affords a very different experience than sailing through The Great Land on a larger vessel. On a smaller luxury ship, you'll enjoy the expected perks like fewer passengers and more personalized service – but you'll also physically get closer to the boundless wilderness, abundant wildlife, icy blue glaciers and majestic snow-capped mountains that you've waited a lifetime to see.

While the fares to sail on such vessels are quite a bit higher than those of larger cruise providers, the all-inclusive (or mostly all-inclusive) prices typically include all-suite accommodations with balconies, all meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi access, gratuities, welcome bottles of sparkling wine, pillow selection, some shore excursions and butler service. Best of all, you won't feel like you're being nickel-and-dimed while on board. As a special touch, the attentive crew members may even learn your name and memorize your preferred pre-dinner cocktail.

Unlike many mainstream lines, most luxury Alaska cruises do not offer pre- and post-cruise tours to extend your adventure. However, you can plan these experiences on your own through third-party providers.

Alaska Tour & Travel has pre-cruise packages that include visits to Denali National Park & Preserve and the small, quirky Alaska towns of Homer and Talkeetna. You can also see a different side of Alaska via a train ride on the Alaska Railroad, take a national parks tour that includes Kenai Fjords National Park or head northbound to Fairbanks , one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights (if you visit during aurora season, from late August to late April). In addition, the company can plan a self-drive tour from Anchorage to Seward, which includes a stay at a wilderness lodge, helicopter flightseeing over Knik Glacier and guided tours in the parks.

The following luxury cruise lines will ensure you make the most of your voyage in Alaska – one of the most magical destinations on Earth.

Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises' small luxury ships are designed for adventurers interested in visiting a mix of Alaska's top ports and more rugged, off-the-beaten-track locales. Extended itineraries offer stops in less-visited destinations like the towns of Haines and Wrangell. On board, guests can expect a personalized experience that includes luxurious ocean-view suites with butler service, multiple gourmet dining options, complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and attentive service with one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the industry.

Base fares for Silversea's 2024 and 2025 Alaska itineraries start at $3,250 per person. If you upgrade to Silversea 's door-to-door fare (which starts at $5,200 per person), you'll receive private chauffeur service from your home to the airport (and back home upon your return) and round-trip flights, with business class upgrades in some destinations.

Silversea also offers immersive pre- and post-cruise land experiences, departing from Seward, Alaska. Highlights include sightseeing flights over Denali National Park & Preserve or into bear country to see Alaska's magnificent grizzly bears. In Vancouver, travelers can take a flightseeing transfer to Victoria to tour the 55-acre Butchart Gardens or board the Rocky Mountaineer for a two-day train ride through the Canadian Rockies.

Silversea's Alaska itineraries extend from May to September, with voyages ranging between seven and 16 days. The line's newest and largest vessel, the 728-passenger Silver Nova , sails its inaugural Alaska season in 2024 along with two smaller ships, Silver Muse (596 guests) and Silver Shadow (392 guests). There are 35 Alaska voyages available in 2024. In 2025, luxury cruisers can hop aboard one of 45 scheduled voyages on either Silver Nova or the 596-guest Silver Moon .

For a seven-day itinerary, consider a sailing from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia. This voyage cruises the Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage and stops in the Alaska towns of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka and Ketchikan. Complimentary excursions in Ketchikan include a tour of Saxman Native Village; a visit to Bonfire Bay Oyster Farm, featuring a sea-to-table oyster tasting; the Alaskan Cultural, Culinary & Lumberjack show; the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafeast and a day as a fisherman aboard the Aleutian Ballard, as seen on Discovery Channel's "The Deadliest Catch." You can also opt for a Selected Shore Excursion (for an additional cost), such as mountain biking or a private fishing trip.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' elegant Seven Seas Explorer sails the line's Alaska itineraries in 2024 and 2025. The lavish 746-guest ship was coined "The Most Luxurious Ship Ever Built" when it debuted in 2016; among its impressive features are the 3,875-square-foot Regent Suite and a high-end collection of art displayed throughout the ship, including works by Pablo Picasso.

Alaska voyages with Regent in 2024 and 2025 start at $4,799 per person. Upgraded 2-for-1 all-inclusive fares (starting at $5,499 per person) cover elegant all-balcony suite accommodations; round-trip airfare (business class on international flights); a one-night pre-cruise hotel package; free two- or three-night land programs; free unlimited shore excursions; free unlimited beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic); complimentary specialty dining; and prepaid gratuities. You'll also receive complimentary airport transfers, unlimited Wi-Fi access and valet laundry service.

Every suite style includes a private balcony, roomy closets and upscale finishes. Concierge Suites (and above) add cozy in-room amenities like cashmere blankets, perfect to bundle up in while you take in the scenery. Meanwhile, Penthouse Suites (and higher) include a private butler who can book excursions, make dinner and spa reservations, unpack your luggage, arrange for a private cocktail soiree in your suite and indulge any other special requests.

Between May and September 2024, Regent sails 22 Alaska voyages. There are 16 Alaska sailings scheduled for the same period in 2025. Itineraries range from seven to 14 nights. For plenty of scenic cruising days, consider a round-trip itinerary from Vancouver departing May 28, 2025. The cruise includes five relaxing days at sea, where you'll enjoy scenic cruising through the Inside Passage (twice), Hubbard Glacier (twice) and Endicott Arm Fjord. Ports of call in Alaska include Wrangell, Juneau , Skagway, Sitka, Seward, Icy Strait (Hoonah) and Ketchikan. You'll also have a full day in Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Vancouver.

While in Wrangell, consider the Tongass Botanical Forest Walk excursion. Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the U.S., with towering old-growth trees and unique flora, fauna and ecosystems. While in the temperate rainforest with your naturalist guide, look for local wildlife like Sitka black-tailed deer, porcupines and birds of prey. Other complimentary excursions at this stop include a round of golf at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course; a canoe trip through Wrangell harbor and nearby islands, and a heritage tour about Tlingit culture and the history of the town.

On this sailing, you'll also enjoy a day at sea cruising Hubbard Glacier, as well as stops in Ketchikan, Sitka, Hoonah (Icy Strait), Skagway and Sitka in Alaska. Or, opt for the July 2, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver for three scenic cruising days in the Inside Passage, Endicott Arm and the Seymour Narrows.

The line's Aug. 13, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver features a special guest: Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, the executive chairman of A&K Travel Group. As such, the cruise will include an exclusive gala dinner and other unique experiences. Other special voyages welcome marine biologist and National Geographic photographer Flip Nicklin, who will share personal stories from his extensive career and expert insights about humpback whale habitats and behaviors.

Kalki 2898 AD

With “ Kalki 2898 AD ,” Telugu cinema filmmaker Nag Ashwin rifles through a century of sci-fi and fantasy extravaganzas to create a wildly uneven mashup of everything from Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” to Marvel Comics movies, underpinned by elements from the Hindu epic poem “Mahabharata.” It’s billed, perhaps optimistically, as the first chapter of the Kalki Cinematic Universe franchise — which makes it part of a larger trend, since it launches the same weekend that Kevin Costner’s multi-film “Horizon” saga does in the U.S.

Bhairava and his droid sidekick Bujji (voiced by Shambala Keerthy Suresh) follow in hot pursuit, and are in turn pursued by an army of storm troopers led by Commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee), a cherubic-faced Yaskin factotum who always seems to be trying a shade too hard to exude intimidating, butch-level authority. Ashwatthama swats away the storm troopers and their flying vehicles like so many bothersome flies, and exerts only slightly more effort by warding off Bhairava and his high-tech weaponry. (Shoes that enable you to fly do qualify as weaponry, right?)

For his own part, Bhairava has a few magical powers of his own, though it’s never entirely clear what he can or cannot do with them. After a while, it’s tempting to simply assume that, in any given scene, the bounty hunter can do whatever the script requires him to do.

But never mind: He and Ashwatthama do their respective things excitingly well during the marathon of mortal combat that ensues when just about everybody (including Manas and his heavily armed goons) get ready to rumble in Shambala for the climactic clash.

All of which may make “Kalki 2898 AD” sound a great deal more coherent than it actually is. Truth to tell, this is a movie that can easily lead you at some point to just throw up your hands and go with the flow. Or enjoy the rollercoaster ride. And if this really is, as reported, the most expensive motion picture ever produced in India, at least it looks like every penny and more is right there up on the screen.

Rita Bullwinkel’s debut novel, “Headshot,” follows eight teenagers fighting in the Daughters of America Cup, a youth women’s boxing tournament staged in a dilapidated gym in Reno. Each chapter details a match between fighters, bout after bout, until finally a champion is declared.

We are thrown into the high-octane theater of each fight, as the boxers work to defeat their opponents. But we also explore each girl’s life, with flashes into the past and the future and into the girls’ minds as they reckon with their intense desires to make something of themselves.

In this week’s episode, the Book Review’s MJ Franklin discusses the book with his colleagues Joumana Khatib and Lauren Christensen. Caution: Spoilers abound.

They also discuss comments and questions that readers submitted. If you’ve read “Headshot” and want to join the conversation, we’d love to hear your reactions in the comments. We’ll get you started:

MJ Franklin : “I like playing sports, but I don’t like watching sports. I start to wander off. And so I was like, I don’t know if this is for me. But then I heard so many people recommending it, I dove in. And I’m glad I did, because I was obsessed. Like, I immediately wanted to talk to people about it. There’s an energy to this book. The high-octane pulse of the ring is so hypnotic, but then … the writing is so skilled and dexterous.” …

Joumana Khatib: “It was fun to see how a lot of very quintessential teenage themes, like control or self-determination or just having some kind of dominion over your own body, which is something that I think is really held at arm’s length for a lot of women of this age, was getting enacted in this way. That was something that I responded the most to. And then also how skilled these girls were with a type of intelligence that I could never have. That was really exciting to read about. I was like, Oh, that does seem nice — like, when you land a punch, that must be a good feeling.” …

Lauren Christensen: “It’s a real feat that Bullwinkel is able to give us a visceral sense of what these bodies look like, feel like, how they match up against each other, who’s bigger, who’s stronger, who’s taller, who’s weaker, who has this hook, for people who are admittedly not already versed in boxing speak.”

REVIEW: ‘The Boys’ Season 4 Episode 5 — “Beware The Jabberwork, My Son”

S imon Pegg and Jack Quaid take aim at our hearts in The Boys Season 4 Episode 5 , “Beware The Jabberwork, My Son.” In an episode that manages to be the series at its most biting and heartfelt, Hughie’s dad awakens through the help of Compound V, administered by Hughie’s mom. However, as we’ve come to learn through Hughie himself, Butcher ( Karl Urban ), and more, Compound V is a dangerous substance, and its side effects outweigh the strength that comes with it. We know early that Hughie’s dad, Hugh, is doomed. But the ride we take to get there doesn’t lessen the impact.

There’s more to The Boys Season 4 Episode 5 than just the father and son storyline, but none quite as effective. There’s the stomach-churning announcement of “Vought Faith” to be headed by the worst person on the show other than Homelander, Firecracker. Butcher is being asked by his old colleague, John ( Jeffrey Dean Morgan ), to join forces. He rightfully calls his current team a joke as the Boys find themselves preoccupied with personal lows rather than missions. They’ve always been a ragtag group of misfits and societal outcasts, but Season 4 greater highlights the severity of their inability to work cohesively. We see this as they attempt to track down the creator of a virus meant to wipe out supes, only to be derailed by Neauman and an army of superpowered farm animals.

In the land of the supes, Homelander feels a certain way about his murdering spree in Episode 4 , though it would be too hopeful to suggest that feeling is regret. But something about it lingers on, and he uses the manipulation he has learned to put it into practice with his son, Ryan. Ryan, who had recently begun to pull away from Homelander and back into Butcher’s orbit. Homelander reaffirms Ryan’s agency by giving him back control and then some. Or at least a form of control that Homelander can puppeteer.

Homelanders goal throughout Season 4 has been to distance himself from any level of humanity completely. He is above them — humans are nothing but bugs to someone with his power. It’s why aging has taken such a toll on his mental fortitude and why he’s now instilling the same belief systems in Ryan. At least now, they can be in it together. Homelander’s storyline continues with the expectant edge of the unexpected. We assume that, at any moment, his words and actions can inspire devastating violence. And they do, yet again, as he tells the member of the Boys to act with constant vigilance, tormenting and killing a longstanding Vought partner in the process.

However, the greatest strength of The Boys Season 4 Episode 5 is the storyline with Hughie and his dad. While Butcher and Homelander are meant to be one anothers foil, it’s Hughie who truly is the inverse of everything Homelander stands for. It’s Hughie who is impossibly, delicately, human. Breakable but able to heal. We see this throughout the episode as Hugh’s powers awaken, and he loses control of himself, causing carnage throughout the hospital and leaving bloody , dismembered bodies in his wake. Here lies the extreme power of Compound V. It brings Hugh back from near death but at too great a cost, as he loses himself.

Early in the episode, Hugh tells Hughie that his defining trait is that he holds on tight to anyone. It’s why his mom had power of attorney over Hugh’s will despite being estranged. In this instance, he references a poor cat that Hughie held tight to as a child rather than letting it go to a vet where it would likely be put down and out of its misery. We see in real-time his relationship with Butcher, a figure in his life who hurt him as much as he’s helped but with whom he shares a bond.

He grows attached and wants to help beyond reasonable outcomes. It’s why it makes Hughie’s decision at the end all the more painful — more painful than the scenario already is. Because despite the lives he’s taken and the gore he’s bore witness to, Hughie isn’t meant to take lives. Quaid and Pegg are tremendous, the latter reminding us of his expert ability to break our hearts (see: The Worlds End ) as Hughie tries to help bring his dad peace. Because the life he was living as he tore through the hospital confused, sickly, and singed with incredible power isn’t a real life. It’s a mirage — an echo of himself amplified.

The government business and the introduction to the Gen V cast all pales in comparison. The Boys Season 4 Episode 5 falters mainly because it’s an episode that should’ve been split in two. An entire episode focused on the fallout of Hughie’s dad’s interaction with Compound V would’ve been just as invigorating. This is especially true when it plays against Season 4 Episode 4, which touches on the cruelty Homelander is capable of. Instead, the episode attempts too much.

It’s still entertaining, and the needling at companies such as Marvel is hilarious as The Boys make it increasingly apparent who they’re mocking. But The Boys Season 4 Episode 5 is at its best when it hones in on the heart of the storyline and, for once, allows emotions to rule the storyline rather than shock value gore.

The Boys Season 4 Episode 5 is out now on Prime Video.
