Luxury Cruises to the Canary Islands

Canary Islands cruises give you a taste of Spain in a subtropical setting. The combination of country and location off the coast of Africa creates an exotic travel experience that blends the rhythm of island life with the cultural influences of Europe. Add in smoldering volcanoes, otherworldly-looking sand dunes, golden beaches, and colorful architecture, and you have a recipe for travel nirvana.

Our cruises to the Canary Islands will take you to some of the most beautiful destinations in this archipelago. On Tenerife, take a trip to the top of Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, with views across the sapphire ocean and other distant islands. Explore Gran Canaria’s rugged, forested interior and the sand dunes of Maspalomas. In Lanzarote, indulge in sizzling steaks and fish cooked over intense geothermal heat from a volcanic vent—it’s just one of many surprises you’ll uncover on a Europe cruise to the Canary Islands.

Canary Islands Cruise Highlights

National parks.

The Canary Islands are home to exquisite national parks rich in flora and fauna. You’ll find a varied terrain that changes from park to park. Spain’s highest mountain, the often snow-capped Teide, dominates Tenerife’s Teide National Park, with spectacular views and high-altitude hiking. In Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote, you can ride a camel past dunes, and enjoy a lunch of steak cooked over the sizzling heat of an active volcano.

The Canary Islands offer a great variety of beaches, from sparkling black sand on Lanzarote to the rippling dunes at Maspalomas, in the south of Gran Canaria. Tenerife’s finest beach is Las Teresitas, with golden sand imported from the Sahara. Las Canteras, located on Gran Canaria, is considered one of the best urban beaches in Spain. Fuerteventura, meanwhile, is known for its long sweeps of golden sand; head to Flag Beach to watch acrobatic kite surfers.

Food & Wine

The Canary Islands have a distinctive cuisine. Try papas arrugadas, which are tiny boiled potatoes served with salt and spicy mojo sauces. Fuerteventura is famous for its majorero cheese. Sample ropa vieja, a meaty stew, and dine on seafood paired with gofio, a paste of roasted grain flour. You’ll find papaya, mango, pineapple, avocado, and Canarian bananas piled high on market stalls. Meanwhile, there are magnificent wines to try on every island, grown in the rich volcanic soil.

Featured Canary Islands Cruise Ports

Tenerife, canary islands.

Popular Tenerife combines historic cities with golden beaches, lush valleys, and otherworldly volcanic scenery. Take the cable car up Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, for lunar landscapes and spectacular views. Explore bustling Santa Cruz with a guide, taking in the sights and stopping for tapas. Relax on the golden sand of Las Teresitas beach, and visit the 15th-century university town of La Laguna to admire the colorful palaces, churches, and convents.

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Lanzarote is starkly beautiful, with active volcanoes and rippling sand dunes that seem to change color as the sun crosses the sky. Try the local Malvasia wine, and admire the work of architect César Manrique, whose bright white buildings with green and blue woodwork are apparent all over the island. The Jameos del Agua, a restaurant in a fern-draped grotto inside a lava tube, is one of his most spectacular structures.

Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Las Palmas, the capital of lush, mountainous Gran Canaria, has an enchanting old center, Vegueta, the cobbled alleys lined with whitewashed houses adorned with traditional Canarian wooden balconies. See the house where Columbus stayed in 1492 before setting out for the Americas. Out of town, explore the coastal village of Agaete, where cliffs plunge straight into the sea and mangoes, oranges, and even coffee are grown. Or head to Maspalomas in the south to wander through the rolling sand dunes.

Canary Islands Cruise Itineraries

Explore the Canary Islands on our itineraries of 10 to 13 nights, sailing from Barcelona, Lisbon, Southampton, and Fort Lauderdale. You could combine the Canary Islands with Morocco and Spain, or ports in mainland Spain and Portugal, as well as the Portuguese island of Madeira. Transatlantic voyages call at Tenerife, too, on their way between Europe and the U.S.

Itineraries

Why cruise to the canary islands with celebrity cruises.

You’ll see the best of the Canary Islands on our luxury ships, with a wide range of excursions on offer catering to every taste. You could explore in a 4x4, go wine tasting, head up a volcano, join a tapas-tasting excursion, kick back on a beach day, or even learn how bananas are cultivated.

After exciting days in port, you’ll return to luxury on board, where exciting culinary experiences and world-class entertainment await. Sip a cocktail at the Martini Bar, or watch the sky turn fiery orange from the Sunset Bar. Treat yourself at the spa, and take in spectacular shows in the theater. Elevate your experience with The Retreat®, which includes a stay in one of our luxurious suites along with access to an exclusive restaurant, Luminae at The Retreat, a private lounge, and more.

Canary Islands Travelling Tip

Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the four main islands that make up the Canary Islands and with a Canary Island cruise, you can choose what island-hopping you would like to do to tailor the holiday of your dreams.

The most common ‘weather problem’ in the Canary Islands is sunburn and sunstroke. Always wear plenty of sunscreen and keep well-hydrated to avoid these issues.

Top Canary Islands

Each island in the Canaries is quite distinct from its neighbour in what it has to offer, giving those enjoying a Canary Island cruise a chance to sample a little bit of everything. Below, we give you a flavour of each island and what you may expect.

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the third largest island , but it is fondly referred to as the ‘ Continent in Miniature ’, with scenic diversity across this neatly rounded island making it one of the Canary Islands’ most popular.

Gran Canaria’s interior is rugged with mountains and lush green with subtropical forests. As a popular hiking destination, it has well-marked trails, enabling even the most novice explorer to enjoy its impressive views.

The colourful capital of Las Palmas is famed for its vibrant nightlife, but stroll a little further into its neighbourhoods and there is plenty of history to discover.

For the best beaches, head south to Maspalomas . With 17km of glorious coastline, consisting of wide sandy beaches and shallow waters, it is a beach-lovers paradise. --> Gran Canaria cruises

Interesting fact on Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands are not named after the yellow bird, but instead ‘Canaria’ is the Latin word for dog. It is thought that when the first Europeans arrived, they found large dogs on the island of Gran Canaria. However, alternative reports suggest the islands could be named after what the Romans called ‘sea dogs’, referring to the seals that inhabited the island.

Tenerife is the largest and most popular of the Canary Islands . It has plenty to offer visitors looking for sun-filled days at the beach, with an abundance of bars, restaurants and shops along its main resorts of Playa Las Americas , Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje .

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of La Laguna offers a haven for those seeking culture. It is the oldest example of an unfortified colonial town with architecture dating back to between the 15-17th century. Here, you can spend the day exploring fine cathedrals, churches and historical monuments.

Step a little further inland and you will discover the wild side of Tenerife at the Teide National Park . This jaw-dropping landscape of craters, volcanoes and rivers of petrified lava encircle Tenerife’s highest peak, Mount Teide, also a volcano, which stands 3,718m above sea level. --> Tenerife cruises

Visiting tip for Tenerife

Tenerife is host to the world’s second largest carnival, after Rio de Janeiro. For two weeks in February, the spirit of the fiesta fills the island with spectacular, colourful parades and lively music and dancing.

Lanzarote is famous for its stunning landscape, featuring volcanic caves , lakes of lava and craters, making it quite a unique destination to visit. A trip to Timanfaya National Park is a must, when in Lanzarote, to get a full appreciation of this epic terrain.

The black sands are characteristic of the island, but for those yearning for golden beaches, Lanzarote has plenty of those too. One of the best can be found at Papagayo, where snorkelling in the clear waters is also a big attraction.

Lanzarote is a chic, stylish island and this is mainly due to its local, visionary architect, César Manrique. His artistic influence fought against the appearance of high-rise buildings and instead focused on bringing together art and nature, using a model based on sustainability. Take time to visit one of the Centres for Art, Culture and Tourism to gain an appreciation of Lanzarote’s creative spirit. --> Lanzarote cruises

Interesting fact on Lanzarote

The last volcanic eruption on the island was in 1824, but there is still a significant amount of heat just below the surface; in fact, enough to cook a meal! Visit El Diablo Restaurant at Timanfaya National Park and you can see how this in action.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is one of the least developed islands and quieter in its character, however it still has plenty to offer. The pristine coastline of the island has a colossal 150km of white, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters . With a cooling sea-breeze, which is claimed to contain beneficial, relaxing negative ions, this the perfect place to escape from it all.

The Atlantic breeze across the island creates waves of up to 2m and has given Fuerteventura a long tradition of windsurfing and kite surfing that attracts water sports enthusiasts from around the world.

Draw yourself away from the beaches and you will find pretty, traditional white-washed villages and towns offering Spanish tapas and local wines. --> Fuerteventura cruises

Fuerteventura fascinating fact

One of the island’s most famous delicacies is its Majorero cheese . Made from goat’s milk, this delicious cheese is widely available, but also has its own dedicated cheese shop.

Best time to visit the Canary Islands

As a year-round sunshine destination, the Canary Islands will provide a glorious holiday at almost any time of year. In mid-summer, it can become particularly warm with average temperatures reaching the high 20 °C .

Temperatures are still warm and reach the low 20 °C between December and February, however many visitors choose to seek out winter sunshine here at this time of year, so it can become busy.

Spring and autumn still have temperatures that allow days at the beach, but without the influx of tourists, these are normally considered the ideal time to visit the island.

Top Packing Tip

If you are considering visiting Teide National Park or one of the other more mountainous areas, pack a few extra layers, as it can get chilly when higher up.

Canary Islands Sights

From active and adventurous, to cultural and chilled, there is a wide variety of great things to see and do when taking a cruise around the Canary Islands. Below are the things that have caught our imagination:

Whale watching in Tenerife

Off the south west coast of Tenerife up to 26 species of whales can be found, offering a potential once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these majestic marine mammals in their own natural habitat. Ethical guided tours are available with marine biologist guides. They will help you identify baleen whales, killer whales, dolphins, pilot whales and even the giant of the sea, the blue whale.

Jameos del Agua – Lanzarote

Jameos del Agua is an innovative and intriguing place, designed by Cesar Manrique from the naturally-occurring large openings in the lava tubes that have created two large caves. One of these caves hides a natural, clear lake that is home to thousands of albino crab species. The second is designed as a concert hall, delivering a magical evening out for its visitors

Las Palmas Cathedral – Gran Canaria

Las Palmas Cathedral is credited for being one of the most striking buildings in Gran Canaria, if not on the whole of the Canary Islands and with its beautiful bell tower and old, colourful stained-glass windows, it is clear to see why. It was the first church to be built on the Canary Islands, with work starting in 1500. However, it took one of the longest times to complete, finishing almost four centuries later. As a result, you can see a mixed influence in its architecture from Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical.

The remote island of El Hierro

If time allows and you are searching for true escapism, take a ferry from Tenerife to the remote island of El Hierro. This small, volcanic island only receives around 20,000 visitors per year. Here you can enjoy pure tranquillity, as you dive into its surrounding waters, discovering underwater cliffs that shelter colourful species of marine life, or hike through the enchanting, ancient forests where trees grow up to 8 metres tall.

Did you know…?

Several areas on the Canary Islands have been declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve , including Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and El Hierro. These are internationally recognised as protected areas that demonstrate a balanced relationship between humans and nature and that encourage sustainable development.

Regional Dishes

A Spanish archipelago with African and American influences and having access to some of the freshest seafood in the world, the cuisine found on the Canary Islands is unique, fresh and full of flavour. These are some of the local favourites:

More of an accompaniment than a dish, this spicy sauce is served with nearly every traditional dish on the islands. Made of garlic, olive oil, red or green pepper and cumin, this hot sauce can be made as hot as the weather!

Sancocho Canario

This traditional dish takes the freshest fish from the Canary Islands’ own local resource and serves it whole, with sweet potato, gofio (a Canarian roasted grain flour) and papas arrugadas (Spanish wrinkled potatoes). A simple, healthy dish that also enjoys a side of Mojo picón for that extra boost of flavour.

Rancho Canario

To satisfy your hunger after a day’s exploring, try Rancho Canario; a thick noodle soup made with chicken, pork, chickpeas and a selection of vegetables, including potatoes.

A foodie tip

One of Tenerife’s local delights is its honey, however, don’t get confused if asking for ‘Miel de Palma’, which translates literally as ‘honey of Palma’. This is actually a sauce made from the sap of palm tree and is used as a cooking ingredient.

To add to your pub quiz knowledge!

Tenerife has the largest waterpark in Europe : Siam Park. With 185 square kilometres of grounds, visitors can enjoy an impressively long network of slides and the highest artificial waves in the world!

The waters around the Canary Islands are home to one of the largest hard-shelled turtles in the world. The endangered Loggerhead Turtle can reach up to three feet in length and live for up to 67 years.

The Canary Island of La Gomera is where the whistling language originated. Called ‘Silbo Gomero’, it was developed to communicate across wide valleys.

The Canary Islands were one of Christopher Columbus’ stopovers on his way to the Americas. Lots of parallels can therefore identified between the Canaries and Latin America, both in terms of architecture and accent.

Top Travelling Tip

As a year-round destination, even in the winter, the waters at most beach resorts are warm enough for a swim, so bring your swimsuit! However, if you are a hiker, it is best not to plan your trip during the summer, as the heat can be a little too much!

Arts and Cuisine

You’ll find an emphasis on cuisine and the arts in the Canary Islands. In Lanzarote, see the architecture and sculptures of César Manrique, who is credited with helping to put Canary Islands tourism on the map. Helpful Tips Before You Go

You’ll find most Canary Islands cruises occur during the autumn months, with most departing in October and November.

The Canary Islands are also popular stops on Transatlantic cruises and make for a blissful day in port before or after making the journey across the Atlantic Ocean. Transatlantic cruises usually occur in April or November.

The itinerary lengths vary from ten days to sixteen days, providing a long and restful vacation with some island adventure mixed in. Depending on the itinerary, you may only visit Tenerife, though some – like the ones aptly titled Canary Islands Cruise – include all three of our Canary Islands ports of call.

Some of these itineraries are on two of our new Edge-class ships: Celebrity Edge® and Celebrity Apex®.

The Canary Islands have a climate that varies between tropical and arid depending on where you are exploring, so pack accordingly with clothes suitable for warm weather that will dry quickly in the event of a tropical rain shower. You’ll want to stick in bathing suits for the beaches and water sports, action appropriate clothes for hiking, and sunhats and sunglasses to see all those gorgeous Canary Islands sights without having to squint through the lovely sunshine.

Which Canary Island should you go to?

Canary Islands cruises offer the perfect year-round vacation thanks to the Spanish archipelago’s winter sun, incredible nature offerings and beautiful beaches.

P&O Cruises offers vacations as varied as you are, with the line now highly popular among vacationmakers eager to cruise to the Canaries.

There are plenty of hotspots to choose from in this neck of the woods off the coast of Africa, whether you’re after culture, watersports or relaxation. P&O Cruises’ Canary Islands cruise vacations take travelers to five destinations – Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Tenerife and La Palma.

Particularly exciting for 2022 is the launch of P&O Cruises’ newest ship Arvia , which will cruise to the Canary Islands from Southampton in December on its maiden voyage. A dazzling ship and spectacular destinations – what’s not to love?

This is everything you need to know about P&O Cruises to this delightful corner of the world.

P&O Canary Islands cruises

What Canary Islands are there?

There are eight islands in the Canaries in total: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa. P&O Cruises visits the five biggest .

What Canary Island is the best?

This is likely down to personal choice – do you want a lively sociable scene or as few tourists as possible? Are golden sands important for you or are you more interested in history? Our island guide below will help you choose!

As for size, the largest of all the Canaries is Tenerife followed by Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and La Palma. La Graciosa is the smallest of the eight islands. Thirty minutes by boat from Lanzarote, the tiny island has no roads but has become a popular day trip option thanks to its golden beaches and idyllic quietude.

P&O Canary Islands cruises Tenerife

P&O shore excursions in the Canary Islands

Tenerife is home to the marvellous Mount Teide National Park – the biggest park on the Canary Islands – boasting craters, volcanoes (yup Mount Teide is still active, nope you don’t need to worry) and rivers of petrified lava. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is fascinating to explore thanks to its impressive flora and fauna.

P&O Cruises offers a stargazing shore excursion to Mount Teide National Park. Equipped with telescopes and binoculars and led by an expert guide you’ll check out planets, stars, galaxies and star clusters in the night sky. Remember to make a wish if you see a shooting star!

If you’d rather stick to the towns for some culture, there’s the art gallery Museo de Bellas Artes in the cruise port of Santa Cruz; or you could delve into the world of natural science and archaeology at the Museo de la Naturaleza y El Hombre.

Alternatively hit the beach to soak up the sun and top up your tan – Playa de las Americas is a fab resort for beachside bars, shopping centres and sunbathing. Or why not go diving and explore the local marine life? Whales and dolphins can be found off the coast of Tenerife, with boat trips and swimming opportunities aplenty.

As for P&O Cruises’ shore excursions in Tenerife, join the History & Flavours of Tenerife trip to admire the UNESCO World Heritage Site of La Laguna and tuck into tasty local eats and thirst-quenching drinks, including a typical passionfruit mojito.

P&O Canary Islands cruises Gran Canaria Masaploma

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura may be the second-largest Canary island but it’s avoided over-development. However, like Tenerife, it also has a volcanic interior and top beaches.

The Corralejo dunes are worth exploring on a buggy tour while Flag Beach is popular with surfers and kite surfers. Jandia Peninsula also has some of the best beaches in the Canaries and is similarly great for watersports. Meanwhile, for history and culture head to Betancuria.

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria holds the crown for the best-known beach in all the Canary Islands – Playa del Ingles, think miles of sand plus plenty of lively bars and restaurants, while Playa de Amadores is another popular beach spot.

P&O Cruises offers an excursion for those keen to try surfing on the Surfing at Las Canteras Beach, Gran Canaria trip. The surfing lesson on the city beach is for both beginners and those who have surfed before. It’s fun for all the family plus a great workout!

Another must-do on the island is to visit the spectacular Maspalomas Dunes which are constantly sculpted by winds. A highlight of P&O Cruises’ Gran Canaria voyages is Palmitos Nature Park – set in a canyon inland from Maspalomas and famed for its tropical plants, birds and fish. Another is Bandama, an extinct volcano set 1,900 feet above sea level, serving up panoramic vistas over the island.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital if you fancy admiring the architecture in the old town, treating yourself to some shopping or settling in for a long lunch.

P&O Canary Islands cruises Lanzarote

Lanzarote is another Canary Island hotspot with an amazing moon-like volcanic landscape – head to Fire Mountain in the Timanfaya National Park for the best views. You can also take camel rides here with P&O Cruises while other tours will take you to the wine country of La Geria to taste some of the local vintages.

If you’re an art fan, join The Magic of Manrique P&O Cruises excursion. Tourists will travel around the island in search of masterpieces by the painter, architect, builder and sculptor (and ecologist!) César Manrique. You’ll take in Jameos el Agua cave, a volcanic cave overlooking a saltwater lagoon home to a colony of white crabs unique to the island.

La Palma is the smallest of all the islands P&O Cruises sails to in the Canary Islands and is still relatively untouched by mass tourism. Explore the pretty harbour of Santa Cruz and the charming old quarter around Plaza de Espana where you’ll find a 16th-century fountain and town hall, a splendid Renaissance church and a handicrafts market.

Caldera de Taburiente is La Palma’s most magnificent volcanic crater. The national park has brilliant flora and fauna plus impressive clear night skies.

There really is something for everyone in the Canary Islands, and the best part about taking a P&O Cruises getaway is that you can hit up multiple destinations keeping the whole gang happy in one vacation. Just don’t ask to share our passionfruit mojito.

Gran Canaria boasts stunning desert scenery, amazing rock formations set amidst volcanic landscapes, and the flourishing greenery of Palmitos Nature Park as well as great beaches.

Tenerife offers green valleys, lush plantations and the volcanic ‘moonscape’ of the Mount Tiede National Park as well as its wonderful beaches. The beaches of Lanzarote have long been favoured destinations for sun-seekers, along with its fantastic solidified lava landscapes, best viewed from Fire Mountain.

Fuerteventura has a landscape formed as much by the climate as its volcanic past. The island’s proximity to the Sahara blesses it with particularly sunny weather, perfect for enjoying some of the best beaches in the Canaries. The small islands of El Hierro, La Palma and La Gomera are less-well known but no less beautiful. El Hierro has a mixture of arid prairies and fertile land of Valle del Golfo planted with vines, bananas and pineapples.

The ‘garden isle’ of Madeira blossoms with colourful flowers - in the parks, botanical gardens and the vineyards that produce the wine that bears its name. The lush and mountainous islands of the Azores, lying nearly a thousand miles from the nearest mainland, provide perfect get-away-from-it-all destinations. The warm maritime climate supports a huge variety of exotic trees and flowers, and on Sao Miguel a huge volcanic crater cradles two picturesque lakes – one emerald green, one deep blue.

The Cape Verde archipelago off the coast of West Africa has an intoxicating mixture of African and Portuguese heritage. The islands are blessed with a year-round tropical climate and diverse landscapes, from verdant mountain ranges to towering volcanoes and pristine beaches. The well-preserved city of Mindelo, known as the cultural capital of the Cape Verde offers magnificent colonial buildings and lively restaurants.

The lunar landscape of Lanzarote is the result of heavy volcanic activity in the past, and there are 300 dormant volcanoes on the island known as the 'Mountains of Fire', where camel rides are offered through the petrified lava fields. Arrecife is the main port and capital and is close to the beach resort of Puerto del Carmen. Its pretty seafront is bordered by a promenade and gardens leading to the town's bazaar and the shopping district of Calle Leon y Castillo.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, and has the longest beaches in the archipelago, a mixture of white sand and black volcanic shingle. The island is generally regarded as the most pristine of the Canaries, and is a Biosphere Reserve crossed by volcanic peaks and edged with wide dunes. The most popular areas are situated away from the capital and port of Puerto del Rosario, the prettiest being Betancuria, where restaurants serve traditional food and there are the remains of a 15th-century monastery.

This 15th-century city is the capital of Gran Canaria and has many colonial buildings, and a picturesque setting between the beaches of Playa de las Canteras and Playa de las Alcaravaneras. The city's historic district, Vegueta, is a World Heritage Site where sophisticated boutiques and a cosmopolitan atmosphere make Las Palmas a popular tourist destination.

Madeira (Portugal)

The lush island of Madeira is known as the 'Garden Isle' of Portugal, with exotic flowers and tropical vegetation covering its steep slopes. The port and capital of Funchal has a mountains backdrop, and its attractions include a wicker-sledge ride down a cobbled mountain track from Monte, and the beautiful Botanical Gardens. There are cafes, bars and restaurants in the city centre, and modern shopping centres.

Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel is the pretty and historic capital of the Azores In the former monastery of Santo Andre is the Carlos Machado Museum, and Porta Delgada is a good base for tours to the lush interior, the extinct volcano of Caldeira das Sete Cidades and its two lakes. Also worth a visit is the botanical garden of Jardim Jose do Canto and Praca Goncala Velho Square, where there are shady cafes and the remains of the city walls.

San Sebastian

The capital of La Gomera, San Sebastian consists of tiers of cube-shaped houses rising up from the harbour. Close to the Iglesia de la Virgen de las Suncion is the Playa de San Sebastian, the place for bars, bodega restaurants and specialist shops. Christopher Columbus is believed to have lived in the Casa de Colon which is now open to the public. The 15th-century Torre del Conde tower is a military structure with connections to Columbus and the oldest building on the island.

La Palma is a mountainous and scenic island with an impressive volcanic crater, Caldera de Taburiente, and black volcanic sand beaches. The pretty town of Santa Cruz is the capital and main port, famous for its wooden balconies, cobbled streets, ancient buildings and the replica of Columbus' ship, the Santa Maria, which houses the Maritime Museum.

Santa Cruz is the capital of the largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife. It is a modern city with several attractions including Garcia Sanabria Park where there are sculptures by Joan Miro and Henry Moore, the colonial church of La Concepcion and the modernist Opera House. In Loro Parque there are tropical gardens and an aquarium housing sea lions, sharks and penguins.

Tenerife is dominated by 3718-metre high Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain, which can be accessed by cable car for stunning views of the other Canary Islands. The large variety of landscapes range from lush valleys, banana plantations and the moon-like white rock formations of the Lorno Blanco. In the Ethnographic Park are the mysterious stepped pyramids of Guimar, built along the same lines as those of Mexico and Peru.

A cruise ship rescues 68 migrants and finds 5 bodies in a boat adrift in the Atlantic Ocean

  • Copy Link copied

MADRID (AP) — A cruise ship rescued 68 migrants and found five bodies in a traditional fishing boat that was drifting off the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, Spain’s maritime rescue agency said Thursday.

It said an oil tanker traveling from northwestern Spain to Brazil spotted the drifting boat on Wednesday afternoon about 815 kilometers (506 miles) south of Tenerife, one of the seven islands in the Canaries archipelago.

Spanish authorities diverted the Insignia, a cruise ship, to rescue the migrants. The Insignia crew also recovered three of the five bodies on the fishing boat. The remains of two people were left at sea because of bad weather hampering their recovery.

The canoe-shaped boats, known as pirogues, are used by fishermen in Mauritania and Senegal.

It is unusual for cruise ships to make rescues of migrants on the Atlantic route, but the pirogue “was a long way out and they could be in danger,” said a maritime rescue’s spokesperson, speaking on condition of anonymity under departmental rules.

One of the passengers on the cruise ship, Steve Dilbeck from Huntington Beach, California, said they were not told about the dead.

“They did say the boat had been at sea for 20 days,” Dilbeck told The Associated Press in a text message. “We were diverted in the evening and took us two hours to reach them. They were brought on board and placed in the Insignia Lounge, which is where they have all their shows.”

“The area has been closed off to passengers. Told they had them remove their clothes and put on jumpsuits. Then they asked passengers if they had shoes and clothes they could donate, particularly for men. Their announcement said 62 were men, with the rest women and children,” he added.

The Marshall Islands-flagged Insignia had left Mindelo, a port city in Cape Verde, on Tuesday. Its operator, Miami-based Oceania Cruises, did not immediately comment on the rescue.

The Spanish rescue agency emailed a statement saying the Insignia is expected to arrive on Friday at the port of Santa Cruz, Tenerife.

The Canary Islands is a destination for boats packed with migrants departing from northwestern Africa on a perilous Atlantic route in search of a better life in Europe.

Spain’s Interior Ministry says a record 55,618 migrants arrived by boat — most of them in the Canary Islands — last year, almost double the number of the previous year. More than 23,000 have landed so far this year, the ministry said.

The Spanish nonprofit organization Caminando Fronteras (Walking Borders) says more than 5,000 migrants have died so far this year through May while trying to reach Spanish coasts, most of them on the Atlantic route. The figure for all 2023 was 6,600, more than double the number for 2022.

The Best New Cruise Ships

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas will be the world's biggest new cruise ship.

Cruising is one of the fastest growing sectors of tourism, with passenger numbers projected to reach 37.2 million by 2025, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Cruise lines are responding to this growth by building new (and often, larger) vessels with all the bells and whistles, including technological advancements that are more environmentally friendly and create the capability to use alternative fuels.

U.S. News has compiled this roundup of new cruise ships that have just set sail or are scheduled to launch later in 2023 and in 2024, plus a preview of new ships coming in 2025 and beyond. The list includes everything from expedition and luxury yacht-style vessels to reimagined ships and megaships – plus the debut of a brand-new cruise line.

Search for missing British teenager Jay Slater stretches into second week in Tenerife as family faces global online attention

Jay Slater wraps his arm around his mother's shoulder as the pair smile for a photo.

Amid glaring neon signs, cheap alcohol and booming music, a British teenager became the 11th person to disappear from a Spanish island this year.

Jay Slater, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer, spent his final night among the hordes of young tourists in Playa de las Americas in Tenerife on June 16.

A single phone call to a friend the following morning — he was lost, he was dehydrated, his phone was about to die — was the last sign of him.

Spanish police, mountain rescue teams, sniffer dogs, drones and more have since been combing the island.

The case has also captured the attention of online sleuths and sparked "vile" conspiracies that have only grown over the course of the 11-day search effort.

'Lost in the mountains … his phone was on 1 per cent'

Mr Slater was attending the last night of the New Rave Generation music festival at Papagayo nightclub, having travelled to the island for the three-day event.

The friend travelling with him, Lucy Law, wrote on a GoFundMe page: "On the last day of the festival, I left alone, earlier than everyone else, because I was tired from the weekend.

"[Jay] had met two people on Sunday night and left with them to go to their apartment."

He left Playa de las Americas sometime between 3am and 6am.

Mr Slater posted a photo on Snapchat at 7.30am, showing the door of a property and tagging Rural de Teno National Park, a remote northern area, as his location.

On Monday morning, the teenager called Ms Law, saying he had missed the bus and planned to walk back to their accommodation.

On foot, it would have been an 11-hour trek across the island.

About 8:15am, he told Ms Law he was "lost in the mountains, he wasn't aware of his surroundings, he desperately needed a drink and his phone was on 1 per cent".

"He has no water for when it's warm throughout the day, and he has no coat/suitable clothing for when it's cold at night," she said.

"It was 1 degree and extremely windy when I was out looking in the middle of the night."

The last confirmed sighting was by a woman whose brother owned the cottage the two festivalgoers Mr Slater had gone home with had been staying in.

She said he had asked about bus times — it was a two-hour wait — and later saw him walking out of Masca, the village the property was located in.

A Guardia Civil officer looks through binoculars to look over rocky mountains and a ravine

His phone last recorded his location at 8:50am in the Rural de Teno National Park, a more-than-8,000-hectare area made up of mountains, valleys, cliffs and some of the deepest ravines on the island.

He has not been seen since.

A growing search and a grainy CCTV image

Mr Slater's friends raised the alarm shortly after receiving the 8:15am phone call, which cut off abruptly.

On Tuesday morning, his mother, Debbie Duncan, flew to the island to aid in the search for him, and later issued a desperate plea directly to her son.

"We just need you home," she said, according to PA news wire.

Asked how the family were coping with the situation, she said: "We're not. I'm not coping very well at all.

"I've not slept, I'm exhausted, it's been awful. I can't give up on him, I just can't."

In the days following, the search expanded to include multiple volunteers, search and rescue teams, drones, and specially trained sniffer dogs.

Their search focused on the area where his phone pinged.

Following an unconfirmed report of a possible sighting in the town of Santiago del Teide, his father, Warren Slater, has been putting up posters appealing for information.

Grainy CCTV footage showed a figure walking past a church in the town — a few kilometres from where he was last seen — on the evening of June 17.

The sighting has not been confirmed by police.

Santiago del Teide mayor Emilio Navarro said he did not believe the teenager had made it to the town, despite police requesting security footage.

"The Guardia Civil sent us an email asking for our security cameras," he told The Independent.

"We could not give it to them as they are organised through a separate company, so the police are speaking to them.

"But that CCTV picture is not from us and I do not recognise that place. I do not think it is in Santiago del Tiede and he is not here.

"We will help the police but it makes no sense."

Missing persons cases are not uncommon on Tenerife.

According to Spain's Interior Ministry, Mr Slater is one of 27 unsolved missing persons cases from 2008 onwards.

Search and rescue groups have warned officials in the past the island's resources were insufficient when it came to disappearances.

The coordinator of volunteer search group SOS Disappeared Santiago Carlos Martin said in 2022 that families "feel abandoned".

"There are many who have disappeared in the Canary Islands and the number has increased since the pandemic," he told The Sun newspaper.

"Perhaps the orography or the social structure have an influence, but we don't know.

"One of the big problems is that the police often take time to geolocate the telephone numbers of the disappeared person due to bureaucratic procedures that act as a barrier.

"The time in a disappearance is important and the process is too complex, which wastes many days."

Local UK media has reported Mr Slater is one of 11 people to go missing on the island in the last six months.

British police have said they are "satisfied" Spanish authorities have the resources they need, but that they had "made an offer of support" and "they will contact us should that position change".

Family receives 'vile' messages

Users on Facebook, TikTok and other sites have spread rumours of a body being found, including edited posts blaming "the Moroccans" for his disappearance.

Private investigator Mark Williams-Thomas told media the family had been sent dozens of "vile" messages.

"There are people out there who have phoned up and said we've got Jay hostage, we've got Jay captive and they need to pay," he said.

"There are some really vile people who have done that, they've tried to hack some of the social media sites, they've attacked some of the family.

"This is unacceptable."

Social media users have also targeted a crowdfunding campaign set up by friends and family.

Ms Duncan hit back at commenters via a Facebook post addressing the fundraiser, writing: "I am really saddened by all your comments.

"You seem to be so bothered about this GoFundMe page … I really hope I am not taking my son home in a body bag.

"The funds are not released and won't be if not needed.

"I really cannot believe the British public are not supporting me in trying to find Jay. This may happen to any of you one day. Very let down by you all."

Search efforts are continuing. Mr Slater's family have said they still hope he will be found alive.

Russia presses its offensive in Ukraine and issues new threats as the West tries to blunt the push

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks during a meeting at the...

Slowly but steadily this summer, Russian troops are forging through Ukraine's outgunned and undermanned defenses in a relentless onslaught, prompting the West to push for new weapons and strategies to shore up Kyiv.

That, in turn, has brought new threats by President Vladimir Putin to retaliate against the West — either directly or indirectly.

The moves by the West to blunt the offensive and the potential Kremlin response could lead to a dangerous escalation as the war drags through its third year — one that further raises the peril of a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.

Russia’s probing offensive

Russia took advantage of its edge in firepower amid delays in U.S. aid to scale up attacks in several areas along the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front. Relatively small units are probing Ukrainian defenses for weak spots, potentially setting the stage for a more ambitious push.

Russia's offensive near Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, that began in May and worried Kyiv’s Western allies has apparently lost momentum after the Ukrainian army bolstered its forces in the area by redeploying troops from other sectors.

Meanwhile, Russia has made incremental but steady advances in the Donetsk region, including around the strategic hilltop town of Chasiv Yar, a gateway to parts of Donetsk still under Ukrainian control. Analysts say the fall of Chasiv Yar would threaten the key military hubs of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

Putin declared that Moscow wasn’t seeking quick gains and would stick to the current strategy of advancing slowly.

Jack Watling of the Royal United Services Institute said that by stretching Ukrainian forces along a wide front, Russia is overcoming the limitations of its military that lacks the size and training for a major offensive.

The breadth of the strikes has forced Ukraine to spread out its artillery, "expending munitions to break up successive Russian attacks,” he said in an analysis. “Russia’s aim is not to achieve a grand breakthrough but rather to convince Ukraine that it can keep up an inexorable advance, kilometer by kilometer, along the front.”

Michael Kofman of the Carnegie Endowment said Russia's apparent goal is to maintain pressure and try to stretch out Ukraine's forces. He noted that even though Ukraine managed to stabilize the front line, it had to use reserves intended to be deployed elsewhere.

“It will take more and more time to actually regenerate Ukraine’s combat strength because of that,” he said in a recent podcast.

Moscow also has stepped up airstrikes on Ukraine’s energy facilities and other vital infrastructure with waves of missiles and drones. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the country had lost about 80% of its thermal power and one-third of its hydroelectric power in the strikes.

“This will be a growing problem when we talk about the future Ukraine’s economic viability,” Kofman said.

Watling said the shortage of air defenses is giving Ukraine a difficult choice between concentrating them to safeguard critical infrastructure, or protecting troops on the front.

“The persistence of Russia’s long-range strike campaign means that not only is the front being stretched laterally, but it is also being extended in its depth,” he said.

The West responds, the Kremlin counters

Washington and some NATO allies have responded to the offensive by allowing Kyiv to use Western weapons for limited strikes inside Russia. The U.S. has allowed Ukraine to use American weapons against military targets in Russia near Kharkiv and elsewhere near the border, but, to Kyiv's dismay, Washington so far hasn’t given permission for strikes deeper in Russia.

French President Emmanuel Macron and some other Western officials argue that Kyiv has the right to use their equipment to attack military assets anywhere in Russia. There also has been talk by Macron and the leaders of NATO's Baltic members — but not the U.S. — of deploying troops to Ukraine.

Putin warns that this would be a major escalation, and he threatened to retaliate by providing weapons to Western adversaries elsewhere in the world.

He reinforced that argument by signing a mutual defense pact with North Korea in June and holding the door open for arms supplies to Pyongyang.

He declared that just as the West says Ukraine can decide how to use Western weapons, Moscow could provide arms to North Korea and “similarly say that we supply something to somebody but have no control over what happens afterward” — an apparent hint at Pyongyang’s role as arms trader.

Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, noted Moscow could arm anyone who considers the U.S. and its allies their enemies, “regardless of their political beliefs and international recognition.”

Another threat of escalation followed a Ukrainian attack with U.S.-made ATACMS missiles that killed four and injured over 150 in Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014. Russia's Defense Ministry warned it could take unspecified measures against U.S. drones over the Black Sea that provide intelligence to Ukraine.

The nuclear threat and Putin's long game

Putin said it was wrong for NATO to assume that Russia won't use its nuclear arsenal, reaffirming it will use “all means” if its sovereignty and territorial integrity are threatened.

He also warned that Moscow was pondering possible changes to its doctrine that specifies when it resorts to nuclear weapons.

Underscoring that, Russia held military drills with battlefield nuclear weapons involving Belarus. Last year, Moscow deployed some of those weapons to Belarus to try to discourage Western military support for Ukraine.

A military defeat in Ukraine, Putin said, would deal a deadly blow to Russian statehood, and he vowed to press his goals “to the end.”

He declared that for Russia to halt the fighting, Ukraine must withdraw its troops from the four regions that Moscow annexed in 2022, an idea Kyiv and its allies dismissed. He also said Ukraine must abandon its bid to join NATO.

Hawkish Russian commentators criticized Putin for failing to respond forcefully to NATO ramping up support for Kyiv and allowing the West to continuously push back Russia’s red lines. Some argued that if the damage grows from Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia with longer-range Western missiles, Moscow should hit NATO assets.

Vasily Kashin, a Moscow-based defense analyst, noted that while Ukraine already had used Western weapons to inflict limited damage, Putin will “have to do something if there are cruise missile strikes deep inside Russian territory resulting in significant casualties.”

Russia could respond by targeting Western drones or U.S. spy satellites, or also strike some NATO countries’ assets in overseas territories to minimize triggering an all-out conflict with the alliance, Kashin said.

Other Russian commentators argued, however, that such action fraught with triggering a direct conflict with NATO isn’t in Moscow’s interests.

Moscow-based security analyst Sergei Poletaev said the Kremlin aims to steadily drain Ukrainian resources to force Kyiv into accepting a peace deal on Russia's terms.

While nothing spectacular is happening on the front line, he said, "constant dropping wears away a stone.”

Moscow’s military advantage allows it to “maintain pressure along the entire front line and make new advances while waiting for Ukraine to break down,” he said in a commentary

Lacking the resources for a major offensive, the Kremlin has opted for slow advances, aiming to “keep pressure on Ukraine while warding off the West from direct involvement in hostilities,” Poletaev said.

“We must walk the razor's edge between our victory and a nuclear war,” he said.
