Backstreet Boys Cruise

  • Edit source

Backstreet Boys Cruise is a series of cruise trips done semi-annually by the Backstreet Boys in conjunction with Rose Tours and Travel . The cruises are typically done in the off-months when they aren't touring. On the cruise, the group do special concerts, sometimes performing songs not seen during most tours. Besides special performances, there are also special events and games done on the cruises. As of 2021, it is unknown if they will have another one.

2010 Cruise [ ]

Backstreet_Boys_BSB_Cruise_2010_DVD

The first cruise lasted from December 9th to the 13th, during the This Is Us era. Some of the events during this cruise were Masquerade Night, International Luv night (where A.J. wore a kilt) and Black & Blue night. [1]

2011 Cruise [ ]

The second cruise lasted from December 2nd to the 5th and went to Nassau in the Bahamas. This cruise had a PJ night, Prom night with a special appearance by Kevin Richardson , and an 80s themed night with an appearance by Sphynkter from the Just Want You to Know video. [1]

2013 Cruise [ ]

The third cruise, the first with Kevin full time, lasted from October 25th to the 28th. This cruise was their 20th anniversary cruise, and had a Neon night event, a Bachelorette Party and Halloween, themed after Everybody (Backstreet's Back) 's video. For Halloween, the Backstreet Boys dressed as the Village People.

2014 Cruise [ ]

BSBCruise2014

The fourth cruise lasted from October 24th to the 27th and went from Miami to Half Moon Cay. This cruise had a 70s/disco night, another Halloween event (once again themed after the Everybody (Backstreet's Back) video), where this time the Backstreet Boys dressed as characters from the Wizard of Oz, and ABC (Anything But Clothes) night, where Nick wore only briefs and a luggage mat, Brian dressed as U.S. Mail, A.J. as a concession stand, Howie as "10,000 kisses" and Kevin as a duffel bag.

2016 Cruise [ ]

The fifth cruise lasted from May 10th to the 14th, and was a European cruise, going to Barcelona, Italy, and Cannes. Unlike previous cruises, this was 4 days instead of 3. This cruise had "Feels Like Home” night, where you dressed up to show where you're from, movie night, where the Backstreet Boys dressed as Star Wars characters, Casino Royale night, where you wore expensive clothes, and 50 Shades of Backstreet night.

2018 Cruise [ ]

The sixth, and as of 2021, most recent cruise, lasted from May 3rd to the 7th, and was set to go from Miami to Grand Turk, but weather caused them to go to the Bahamas instead. The themes were High School night, where Nick dressed as a nerd, Kevin was a hippy, Howie was a "Rico Suave" type character, Brian was a jock, and AJ was an "intellectual bad boy", Comic Con night, and Millennium night, where the Backstreet Boys dressed as they did on the cover of Millennium and performed the entirety of the album, and 90's night, where the Backstreet Boys all dressed as the Spice Girls.

Everybody! The Backstreet Boys are back… alright? And if just those simple words sent a tremble through your boyband-loving limbs, then you’re going to want to make sure to grab a ticket for the Backstreet Boys’ latest cruise, set to hit the high seas May 3-7 aboard the Carnival Sensation .

Backstreet Boys Cruise Details

Backstreet boys cruise

Where They’re Sailing

To say that these sailings are popular would be an understatement, what with this being the sixth time the group has taken part in one. And that means it’s likely the ship will sell-out pretty quick for this four-day sailing from Miami to Grand Turk. Expect concerts, parties and an opportunity to take your picture with the guys.

Perks offered vary by the cabin category, with those who purchase balcony cabins listed as 8B or above getting preferred seating within the first six rows for all events and concerts in the main show lounge.

Guests in other cabin categories will receive their seat assignments on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning the sooner you book, the closer to the Boys you’ll be. And how much will the cruise set you back? Anywhere from $699 per person (for an inside stateroom) to $9,999 per person (double occupancy) for the Owner’s Suite.

Pre-Sale Ticket Info

Tickets for the special event go on sale to past guests and fan club members at noon on April 25th, while the general public can snatch up whatever’s left beginning at noon on April 26th. For info on the event as well as how to purchase a ticket, click here  for the Backstreet Boys cruise website. And if you want to get a glimpse of the general Backstreet madness which has taken place in the past, you can watch this video.

Don’t have anyone to go with? The company can also find other solo travelers for you to cruise with.

What To Expect On A BSB Cruise

bsbcruiseexpect

The BSB Cruise is coming!

I originally wrote this to prep new time cruisers for the upcoming Euro Cruise that happened in 2016. However! We have a new cruise upon us and while there’s many blogs focusing on what you need to do to book (awesome comprehensive blogs at that like the one at WHOTB ), I figured this just needed a quick refresh of what you can expect on a BSB Cruise! Because honestly it’s an experience you’ll never forget. And it’s worth every penny you spend. I’ve done three of them (2010/2011/2014) so I know from experience!

100_1292

1. Expect It To Feel Like a BSB Fan Convention!

You’re surrounded by your own kind! There’s no judgement! You don’t have to pull back or hide your fandom. Everyone is on that boat for the same reason you are. I mean with the rare exception of extremely good husbands (or fiances/boyfriends) you know for a fact there’s no one to side eye you for your extreme fangirling moments. Whether it’s about Nick shooting alcohol in your mouth (or missing your mouth, hitting your chest and then trying again), or a selfie with Kevin. Doesn’t matter. You can freak out till your heart explodes! (I don’t recommend it though…it sounds painful.)

bsb cruise price

2. Don’t Expect To Sleep

The deck parties run LATE and the events start early! Sleep? What’s sleep? What you really get are catnaps taken between say 5am and 9am. Especially if you’re trying to keep up with Howie. That Boy does NOT stop and I’m starting to think that secretly he’s an energizer bunny. Nick tends to go late too but now that he’s a dad, he might use this as a chance to catch some Zzz. Moral of the story? Sleep before the cruise and sleep after it’s over. During? Good luck!

bsb cruise price

3. Expect The Unexpected

Events aren’t always what they seem. Case in point? On the first cruise, karaoke was described as being “hosted by Brian”. No mention of the other Boys. Definitely no mention of them singing with you. And turns out…all (at the time four) of them were there and singing with you. The fan games? Crazy though you never know what kid of crazy till you get there. You sign up but you never know what comes with it! You might be pressed up trying to carry a coconut. And no, I’m not trying to be dirty… Hell, you might go to a deck party only to see Nick and Kevin decked out in Wizard of Oz drag! You just never know.

100_2098

4. Don’t Expect Too Much, But Be Ready For Anything

With all the amazing stories fans will share, it’s easy to get your hopes up as high as the sky. I get it, I do. It’s only natural to think you might have that dream moment where you get picked for something, or you run into them and get to chat. Maybe you play blackjack with them? The possibilities are endless, right? I went in the first cruise blind, no one knew how it’d be. And I was incredibly lucky. The two other cruises I did in 2011 and 2014? Just as epic as the first but you know what? I was only picked for something on the first cruise. Because you get to see a side of the Boys that doesn’t quite show at other events. And you’re there with friends this fandom has brought you over the years. It’s the  overall experience that makes or breaks it, not how lucky you may or may not be. So keep yourself grounded but if you see an opportunity for something epic, go for it!

DSC_0139

5. Expect It To Be A Vacation You’ll Never Forget

Because in the end guys, that’s what it’ll be. Those Boys pull their hearts into making every penny you spent and minute you planned on cruise completely worth it. The trip will feel too short and you’ll spend a week (at least) in Post-Cruise-Depression. But when they announce the next one? You won’t be able to resist. So savor every moment and enjoy yourselves! You deserve it.

BACKSTREET BOYS ISN'T JUST A BAND. IT'S A LIFESTYLE.

A look back at @BackstreetBoys cruise themes

by Karah | Jun 20, 2018 | Backstreet Boys , Cruise , Cruise Reviews , Throwback | 0 comments

What’s a theme night? A theme night is where there’s a certain theme that you dress up in. For instance, if someone hosts a pink night, everybody would dress in pink. Country night? Plaid shirts, cowboy hats, cowboy boots.

Each Backstreet Boys cruise has had three to four theme nights, depending on the length of the cruise.

Let’s take a look at each theme night.

Cruise #1 – 2010

Screenshot (43)

On the very first Backstreet Boys cruise, the boys were in their “This Is Us” era and without Kevin Richardson. They had very “This Is Us” themes with two themes being inspired by songs on the album.

International Luv night had the guys and fans dressed up, representing where they were from. In one famous move, AJ McLean wore a kilt with tightie whities underneath.

The other album inspired theme was Masquerade night where masks were a must. The last night, another song/album theme, was Black and Blue night, where everybody dressed in the most famous Backstreet colors.

Cruise #2 – 2011

large.q4u74hl8lk51

The Backstreet Boys stepped up cruise themes in 2011 with PJ night, Prom and ’80s/Sphynkter night. The fictional rock band Sphynkter made an appearance, taking the stage to sing along with “Just Want You To Know” before looking out at the crimped hair and tulle party skirts.

Prom night was even more special with Kevin Richardson rejoining the group, dressed as if he was taking the stage in “Chicago.” AJ and Nick Carter dressed like the characters from “Dumb and Dumber.”

Pajama night ended up a little crazy with rain causing the festivities to be moved inside the atrium. Nick dressed as a Ninja Turtle while Brian Littrell had on Elmo pajamas.

Cruise #3 – 2013

large.F-py2JO9XV6JdOgZAqAySVXM3YJWFGc9SeBHQdxbnq4

After a year off from cruise festivities, the boys, including Kevin who was experiencing his first full cruise, kicked things off with three interesting themes – Neon night, Bachelorette Party and Halloween.

Neon glow sticks, face paint and t-shirts were the star of the party to kick off celebrating 20 years of being a band. Bachelorette night ended up with the Backstreet Boys dressed as Chippendale dancers.

Huge bras were thrown on stage and huge inflatable body parts were thrown around the audience and stage before AJ came out in something that was straight out of “50 Shades of Grey.” Halloween night brought the boys out as the Village People and other fans dressed in their favorite Halloween costumes.

Cruise #4 – 2014

large.KO1HpRR_L7rzImmnmPrAfjr2TGiqwF4Xs48W6EutE0c

The 2014 Backstreet Boys cruise brought one of the most anticipated and creative theme nights of any of the previous cruises – ABC (Anything But Clothes) night.

The first night, a ’70s/Disco themed night, brought back memories of the decade party on the 2011 cruise. The Backstreet Boys looked as if they had walked just out of “Saturday Night Fever.”

Halloween night put the 2013 Halloween night to shame when the boys came out as characters from “The Wizard of Oz,” complete with Nick in a Dorothy dress, sparkly red sneakers and a basket with a stuffed dog inside. Brian was the Cowardly Lion, Kevin the Wicked Witch, AJ the Scarecrow and Howie as the loveable Tin Man.

But ABC night put a cap on the trip, with Howie dressed as “100 Kisses,” Brian being U.S. Mail, AJ being a concession stand, Kevin as a duffle bag and Nick coming out in nothing but tight blue briefs and a luggage mat wrapped around his waist.

Cruise #5 – 2016

large.DoOhxxKGT3JmklIarP7wFd5mjfTq7ntLLnPvX0-M9rI

In 2016, the fifth Backstreet Boys cruise went international to Europe. The Mediterranean cruise took off from Barcelona with stops in France and Italy before having a day at sea. That meant we had four theme nights since it was a longer cruise.

The first theme night was “Feels Like Home” where fans dressed up to show where they were from. Nick obviously dressed up like a Tampa Bay Buccaneers player. The second theme night was a movie night theme, which was perfect because we were docked in Cannes, France during the historical and regal film festival. The boys’ dressed up in a group theme – Star Wars which led Nick to dress like a girl for the second cruise in a row – Princess Lea.

The third cruise night was Casino Royale where everybody dressed in their best diamonds and pearls and the boys wore suits and tuxes. The final theme night was the friskiest yet – 50 Shades of Backstreet. Let’s just say there were some whips, handcuffs, masks, and naughtiness.

Cruise #6 – 2018

large.shTY9ES4XrtGwgo-0yZB4uuV45hBthEKJINYlOiACd8

The sixth Backstreet Boys cruise was originally set to go to Grand Turk, but due to a tropical system, we made a stop in the Bahamas, but that didn’t stop us from having a good time. Again, there were four different theme nights.

The first theme night was High School night, where we all dressed like we did in high school. The boys all took on different high school personas, with Nick being a nerd, Kevin being a hippy, Howie being a stylish Rico Suave, Brian being a jock and AJ being the intellectual bad boy.  The second theme night was Comic Con night, where the boys all dressed like comic book characters.

The third theme night was Millennium night, which might go down as one of the greatest theme nights ever on a Backstreet Boys cruise. The boys all came out in white, like on the album cover, and performed the entire album. Then they kept performing. It was a magical night. The final cruise theme was 90’s night where you might have expected them to come out dressed like they did in the 90s, but they came out as the Spice Girls.

2018 was a legendary cruise for themes.

Hello all. I unfortunately did not sign up for th BSB Cruise but am booking a cabin on my own to save a lot of money and wondered if any of you knew where they would be putting the actual Backstreet Boys. I wasnt sure if the Carnival Destiny had Owners Suites that they would be put in, if they would block off the Spa deck or if they would be put in the Grand Suites on the Empress Deck. If any of you have ever been on a cruise where there are famous people do you have any insight as to where they stayed? Thanks so much. Any information would be helpfull.

Really the backstreet boys?Who cares about them the are like such old news like they weren't even that great 10 years ago....maybe if they were actually famous like the Jonas Brothers I would understand!

Oh my stars.

OK, I remember the BS-Boys and love their music, my daughter had all of the CD's when she was younger so I became familiar with their music. Go have a great time; enjoy yourself. :)

Apparently the OP cares, otherwise they wouldn't be asking. How incredibly rude and condescending.

If I wanted to be a total jerk -- much like you -- I would mock your liking of the Jonas Brothers, but I'm assuming you're either a preteen girl who hasn't the sense to know what a rude creature you're being, or a middle-aged woman obsessed with a bunch of teenage boys, which is terminally creepy.

Hey, I'm Middle-aged. :D LOL---- I guess this is a bonus when you have teenagers; you get the heads-up on the latest music and fads.

Hey, I'm Middle-aged. :D LOL----
I have nothing against the middle-aged. I'm creeped out by middle-aged women who are obsessed with the Jonas Brothers. It's one of the myriad of things that creep me out.

I should have added that not to long ago there was a thread about " The Richard Simmons Cruise" lots of folks got a bashing for wanting to be a part of that, SO, just do what you enjoy and don't worry about what other people will think. What's that saying? Different strokes for different folks. Go have a great time!!

I'm still waiting for the Buffett cruise. I want to be a part of that.

I know what you are saying, and agree. I remember back when my daughter was younger, we had a neighbor (middle-aged) that went bonkers to win tickets to a Brittany Spears concert!! Way over-the-top. So yes, this is creepy.

Although I could care less about The Back Street Boys or Jonas Brothers, I will point out that BSB has outsold the Jonas Brothers 37 million to 8 million in album sales. That would make BSB far more famous and popular than Jonas Brothers. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I believe the question was....where do the celebs stay when they are on a ship? What section of the ship? Not who is better BSB or Jonas Brothers.

I believe the topic changed when someone got snotty.

As to the OP's question, it depends on the act. I'm pretty sure the Bare Naked Ladies did the entire Bare Naked Cruise on-board. I believe John Mayer did as well. I know some acts will join up with the group for a special concert at one of the ports, so it really depends more on the act than anything else. *IF* the act is on board, expect very heavy security. (I once worked for the fanclub for a rock act. They considered doing something like this, fanclub only cruise but balked at it due to the high cost for the fans as well as the security issues.)

JYeagersGrl

JYeagersGrl

I know the NKOTB cruise the guys stayed on the ship so I'd imagine BSB would stay in the owners suite or a couple of suites. Have a blast I wish I could go I may not be a teeny bopper anymore but I still love me some AJ :)

Tapi

Hello all. I unfortunately did not sign up for th BSB Cruise but am booking a cabin on my own to save a lot of money

Keep in mind that if you book a cabin on you own, you will NOT be able to attend any of the activities onboard related to the Backstreet Boys. You may not even be able to book a cabin on your own if it's a full ship charter.

In order to participate, you MUST book through the group/travel agency that put the cruise together. You're paying a higher price to book through them because they've added the cost of performances and additional perks.

By the way, I'd rather go on the Backstreet Boys cruise than on the Elvis cruise!

how old are you? grow up

LOL you go girll. AJ is awesome but Nick is my favorite.. and thank you all for sticking up for me regarding the rude Jonas Brothers comment. I dont care for the Jonas Brothers but I would never say something that rude especially if someone is just asking a question trying to get information. I really appreciate all your feedback. I am definitely staying in an inside cabin.. so either on the empress deck across from the Grand Suites or on the Lido deck. Which one do you all recommend? Thanks again

Well, curiousity killed the cat, so I googled the Backstreet Boys cruise.

Not only is it true that there IS a Backstreet Boys cruise, but apparently, after all these years, they still have quite a following. It's not until December and it's already sold out!

if they guys are legal it is...LOL :D

if they guys are legal it is...lol :d

Everyone in this room is now goofier for having read that. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

LOL...just joking....:p:rolleyes:

Yes I think the Cruise sold out within like a week or less.. I called and they have over 200 people on the wait list but the cruise itself is not completely booked. THey were selling the cheapest ticket for $894 for an inside with bunks and I can book a normal looking inside for like $264 p/p.

I don't know where they'd be staying, but I know where I'd be staying.....off the ship. Hey oh!

Lol I was telling someone else that earlier.. it is going to suck if you dont like the band and dont want to be around all day girls going crazy stuff.. Becuase I called Carnival and asked "Is there anything happening becuase there arent that many rooms left" and the guy said no.. so they are kind of misleading people.

These 10 amenities make Royal Caribbean Group's new ultra-luxury cruise ship worth its $4,550-a-week price

  • I spent five nights on Silversea's new ultra-luxury cruise ship, Silver Ray .
  • Fares in 2024 start at $4,550 per person for a seven-day cruise.
  • My favorite amenities on Silver Ray included a sauna with ocean views and a fun cooking class.

Insider Today

The hardest part about your Silver Ray cruise could be deciding what you want to indulge in first.

Silversea, Royal Caribbean Group's most luxurious cruise line, recently welcomed its 12th ship, the 728-guest Silver Ray. But as with any new floating five-star hotel , the cost to sail won't be ultra-cheap, with weeklong cruises starting at a whopping $4,550 per person in 2024.

I might've scoffed at this cost before boarding Silversea's second Nova Class vessel . But after experiencing all it has to offer on a complimentary five-night test cruise in mid-June, the price tag now makes more sense — and might even be justifiable.

Take a look at my 10 favorite amenities on Silver Ray , all of which shed some light on its steep fare.

1. The butler-delivered caviar you can eat on your couch while wearing pajamas

bsb cruise price

Room service isn't always free on mass-market cruise ships .

On Silver Ray, not only are the hot dogs and hamburgers delivered to your suite complimentary — but caviar is, too.

Simply call the room service line or ask your butler for caviar, and before you know it, a tin of the expensive fish eggs will be presented at your door.

You don't want to know how pretentious and insufferable I felt as I shoveled the tiny pearly bites into my mouth while lounging on the couch.

It wasn't the best caviar I've ever had (it's one of Calvisius' cheapest options). But it definitely added the unnecessary, theatrical, and extravagant touch I had been seeking on a $650-a-day cruise.

2. The sushi lunch

bsb cruise price

Dinner at Silver Ray's Japanese restaurant, Kaiseki, costs $80 per person. But it's complimentary during lunch, making it a great place to gorge on free sushi, sashimi, beef-filled bao buns, and ramen.

Alcohol is complimentary on Silversea, too. So feel free to have a glass of sake and Japanese beer with your raw fish feast.

Like the caviar, the sushi quality wasn’t comparable to Michelin-rated omakase restaurants.

bsb cruise price

The scallop nigiri in my sushi and sashimi combo tasted more lightly poached than raw, the uni was served on unevenly cut cucumbers, and the octopus in the octopus roll was too chewy.

But complaints aside, the portions were gracious, the fish quality was acceptable, and the rolls were diverse. The spicy tuna roll had the perfect allium punch, while the vegetarian one stood its ground among the raw fish. It was far better than I expected for a cruise ship lunch.

Best of all, it was complimentary. And while it didn't change my life, it certainly satisfied my craving.

3. The upscale café without the upscale prices

bsb cruise price

Many popular cruise ships have an onboard Starbucks. Silver Ray goes one step further with a café comparable to your overpriced neighborhood coffee shop (and this one won't make you pay extra for oat milk).

At the centrally located Arts Cafe, guests can order latte art-topped espresso drinks and uncommon tea varieties — all served with Mepra spoons that cost $40 each.

If you're a fan of cucumber sandwiches and cakes, the Art Cafe is also a great place to grab a mid-day snack or host an impromptu afternoon tea.

4. The entertaining cooking class

bsb cruise price

Silversea's SALT — an acronym for "sea and land taste" — program weaves cuisines local to the ship's destination into the cruise.

At SALT Lab, this takes the form of a complimentary cooking class.

You might think, 'I'm on vacation — I don't want to cook!'

bsb cruise price

I hear you. But SALT Lab is nothing like cooking at home.

For starters, the instructor and their assistant do all the cleaning and prepare all your mise en place for you. And I guarantee they're funnier, wittier, and more lighthearted than your partner who yells at you for not following the recipe.

All you have to do is listen to their instructions, assemble, cook, and eat.

5. The restaurant showcasing dishes from the itinerary

bsb cruise price

SALT isn't just a cooking class. It's a lifestyle. (Just kidding — but not really.)

Silver Ray offers SALT cooking classes, SALT shore excursions, a $180 SALT Chef's Table dinner, a SALT Bar, and a SALT Kitchen.

If you hate repeating meals, the latter could be your savior. Half of its menu changes almost daily according to the ship's destination. So, if you didn't have time to explore a port's cuisine, you could go to SALT Kitchen instead.

When Silver Ray was docked in Lisbon, the restaurant had options like roasted pork loin with a Portuguese red bell pepper sauce, and travesseiros, a popular dessert from nearby Sintra, Portugal.

6. The half-restaurant, half-jazz bar

bsb cruise price

Silver Note is where you go to chow down on small plates of beef tenderloin and octopus tentacles while being serenaded by live jazz vocalists and pianists. If you can overlook the purple and red spotlights that give the venue a cheap dive bar feel, you'll be delighted by Silver Note's talented performers, tapas-style food, and fun plating.

The plates were pre-warmed, the lobster tail was perfectly cooked, and the musicians were world-class. I ate alone and stayed for about two hours, fully engaged by the impressive vocalist.

7. The spa’s view

bsb cruise price

Access to spa facilities like saunas is often complimentary on high-end cruises .

Silver Ray's was admittedly bare-boned, with only three rooms (a steam room, sauna, and thermal pool). But you'll quickly forget about the lack of options when you see the ocean views inside the pool and sauna.

The latter is a great place to balance your yin (peacefully staring at the passing waves) with your yang (feeling like you're about to have a heat stroke).

Unfortunately, the steam room doesn't have any views. However, it does offer complimentary scented scrubs that will leave you with baby-soft skin.

8. The pool

bsb cruise price

You're probably wondering how an amenity as commonplace as a pool could be so special.

There is, in fact, nothing spectacular about the pool itself. What is special, however, is its placement toward the starboard-side edge of the ship, giving swimmers a photogenic view of Silver Ray's surroundings instead of sunbathers' toes.

Don't worry, fellow loungers. We get a perk, too.

No need to walk to the pool bar to refill your piña colada. The waitstaff will do it for you.

9. The elevators

bsb cruise price

Before Silver Ray, I would've scoffed if you had told me one of my favorite amenities on a cruise ship would be the elevators. But alas, it seems not all of them are created equal.

On most cruise ships, the elevators are located at the center of the vessel and flanked by corridors on either side.

Like the pool, all six of Silver Ray's elevators are located by the edge of the ship — half port side, half starboard side — and lined with glass walls, giving riders sweeping views of the ship's surroundings.

Not to be dramatic, but I've never seen a more beautiful elevator.

Once inside, travelers can select their desired floor on the touchscreen.

bsb cruise price

The screen's floor descriptions are updated on port days to indicate where guests must disembark. It's a small but convenient touch I've yet to see on other cruises, saving travelers the panicked "where do I get off this ship?" question.

10. The tablet-phone-TV connectivity

bsb cruise price

The best part about my Deluxe Veranda suite wasn't the walk-in closet or balcony. It was the seamless connectivity between my phone, the in-room tablet, and the TV.

Silver Ray's cabins have portable touchscreen tablets that function as a vacation guidebook, daily scheduler, and suite control center.

The TV has the same functions, for when you're sitting on the couch and too lazy to retrieve the tablet. Or, if you're not in your cabin, your mobile Silversea profile has the same options.

As someone who religiously studies menus before going to a restaurant, I loved having every onboard restaurant's menu at my fingertips.

But the real winning feature was the "sleep" setting. No more hitting your knee on furniture as you navigate back to bed after turning the lights off. The sleep setting slowly dims the suite's light fixtures, giving guests plenty of time to saunter back to bed before everything goes dark.

Looking to sail the high seas, but don’t want to feel like you paid more than you should have? The best time to book a cruise can vary heavily based on market demand, and there is no easy answer to determine the best time. But there are some important considerations to boost your chances of scoring a deal.

Summer is a popular time to visit the Mediterranean, and the winter cold keeps Caribbean-bound ships filled. However, cruise fares are dynamic and can vary by the sailing — with holiday periods being the most expensive.

Other times of the year can be a relative steal when it comes to getting the best bargain for your cruise. But when is the best time to book a cruise? Knowing when and where to book is the key.

» Learn more: NerdWallet's breakdown of the best cruise lines

1. Wave season

The best time to book cruise deals can be during "wave season," from January to March, when cruise lines release the best deals for the coming year.

This is when several cruise lines open up bookings for their upcoming sailings and you can score bonuses such as cabin upgrades, prepaid gratuities, welcome amenities and onboard credits.

Wave season is a popular time to reserve a sailing, but it makes sense to monitor cruise rates throughout the year as cruise lines update their pricing depending on how the sailing is selling.

» Learn more: Best ways to book a cruise

2. Timing: What is the best day of the week or month to book a cruise?

Other than during wave season, there is no one particular day that is better than others. The best advice is to keep an eye on the sailings you want. You may see prices fluctuate as the sailing fills up or if a significant number of people cancel. This type of informal price tracking is the best strategy when it comes to finding the price that is right for you.

There is one exception, and that is during holiday promotions, especially around Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Cruise lines unleash a slew of impressive deals, representing major savings and significant perks on sailings for the coming year and beyond.

The best deals are likely to be when a cruise opens for sale. The sooner cruise lines can get your payment, the better. It’s all about cash flow, even if it is just a down payment — and this is why there is an extra incentive to book early.

A solid word of advice is to book a cruise 6-12 months before the departure date, but really, the sooner, the better.

» Learn more: Tips for getting the best deal on your next cruise

3. Can you track cruise fares?

The best way to track cruise fares is by downloading the Shipmate app to keep an eye on rates for the exact sailing date and cabin type you are interested in to ensure that the price has not dropped.

Many cruise lines offer price protection guarantees if you book directly with them or through a qualified travel agent. This means if the price drops for the same cabin and fare type, you can score the lower rate as long as you have not already paid in full or passed the guarantee window.

But as expected, there is fine print, so make sure you read the details before settling on a price, and ask as many questions as you can when making the booking so there are no surprises.

You may have to cancel the booking and start over to secure the lower rate. Some cruise lines will only give the refund as as onboard credit. Other restrictions may only protect the price within 48 hours of making the booking rather than up to the departure date.

Royal Caribbean allows you to add sailings to your watchlist directly from their website, but you'll need to select the specific date you'd like to track and add each cabin type you'd consider booking to get alerts.

bsb cruise price

Tracking cruise fares is really the only way to know if you’re getting a good deal on a sailing. If you don’t want to do the extra research, travel advisors can help. Some can also offer extra perks that would not be available by booking a cruise yourself.

» Learn more: Is cruise travel insurance worth it?

4. Last-minute deals

When do cruises go on sale? The key takeaway is that some sailings may never go on sale since they are already in high demand, so cruise lines find no need to lower the price. As the sailing date approaches, trips that have not sold may go on sale, but it is never a guarantee.

On sailings with availability close to departure, it is possible to find last-minute deals. This can also be a good time to get last-minute bonuses like cabin upgrades or onboard credits when cruise lines are desperate to fill any empty cabins. After all, once a cruise ship leaves, the cabins are lost revenue.

Keep in mind, however, when passengers book a cruise after the final payment window (early bookings can make payments in installments), the cruise must be paid in full. If you aren’t prepared to make a big payment all at once, this could mean that last-minute deals could prove to be a hassle for your finances.

If you’re looking for a particular cabin type, especially suites, these can be among the first to go as they are more limited in number. It is best not to wait until the last minute for premium cabins as they can sell out as early as a year in advance.

» Learn more: Is it best to book a cruise last-minute?

5. General demand

If the sailing you want to book is in demand, like over the holidays or to a rare destination with few sailings, you will want to book early.

Supply and demand regulate the pricing, so these cruises are unlikely to be discounted given their heavy demand. You'll want to book the cruise as soon as reservations are available for sale (18-24 months before the departure date) for the best deal and availability.

On the other hand, sailings with greater frequency (like your standard Caribbean or Mediterranean cruise) will offer deals well into the booking cycle since there is more to choose from of those itineraries.

As long as you are not committed to just one particular date or cabin type, waiting longer can reveal more potential deals.

» Learn more: 6 places you can cruise without a passport

6. Schedule flexibility

Multi-generational families or friends traveling together may have a harder time deciding on when to sail since work and school commitments can limit the departure date to just one or two sailings, since cruises have set departure and disembarkation dates.

The type of cruise you book is also key. Expedition ships, like those going to Antarctica or the Arctic, are often much smaller and their cabins can fill up quickly.

» Learn more: How to plan a cruise in 6 steps

7. Earning or redeeming miles on a cruise

Cruise lines often partner with travel agencies and airlines to offer incentives in the form of miles and points to people who book through them. Other websites also allow travelers to earn or redeem miles and points for a cruise.

This includes airline-affiliated cruise websites like American Airlines Cruises , Delta SkyMiles Cruises and United Cruises . Still, the best time to buy a cruise with miles and points is no different than when booking a sailing with cash, as the redemption rates can vary.

» Learn more: Best travel credit cards right now

8. Credit card deals

Many cruise lines have credit cards that provide discounts for cardmembers or special perks during their sailings.

Another consideration is cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express and Chase Sapphire Reserve® , as they offer travel credits when using the card to book travel. This includes cruise trips, and you can take advantage of those rebates when paying for a cruise with that card.

The best time to book a cruise recapped

There are many considerations when searching for the best time to book a cruise. The bottom line is that booking early ensures getting the itinerary, cabin and date that you want. And when you book directly, you can sometimes request a credit if the cost drops on the exact same type of fare if you have not already paid in full.

It can be hard to settle on the exact trip you want to take so far in advance, but if you keep your eyes open, great deals can be had.

Expeditions aren't your typical vacation: 'What a privilege it is to see these places'

bsb cruise price

  • Expedition cruising is one of the fastest-growing segments in the cruise industry.
  • It's one of the few vacations where passengers can experience pristine wilderness face-to-face.
  • The trips themselves are a financial commitment, with most Arctic expeditions starting at over $8,000 per person.

Not every traveler is made for an expedition cruise . However, those who are looking for a connection with nature and aren’t afraid of a little discomfort could find themselves at the most extreme locations in the globe.

But what if you landed in the Arctic Circle on a whim?

That was the case for Katie McCay who said that after feeling overwhelmed at work , any trip sounded like a good idea. Thankfully, long-time friend Victoria Dixon was there with the idea to cross eight time zones from Melbourne, Australia, to embark on Aurora Expeditions ’ Sylvia Earle for an Arctic exploration.

“The idea presented itself, so why not,” MacKay told USA TODAY.

Nature can make you feel small. You should seek that feeling when traveling.

Expedition cruising is one of the fastest-growing segments in the cruise industry. It's one of the few vacations where passengers can experience pristine wilderness face-to-face. According to an Aurora Expeditions spokesperson, the line estimates that by December 2025, "we will have tripled our capacity since 2019 with our three purpose-built ships."

"We know that consumers are increasingly conscious about spending money with companies they know are operating ethically and sustainably, and this is also true for those they choose to travel with," a spokesperson for the line told USA TODAY.

For many of the 58 passengers, boarding the Sylvia Earle was purposeful and intentional.

“I saw a YouTuber do this exact trip, and I knew I had to do it,” Patricia Spiekermann, a photography enthusiast from Frankfurt, Germany, said.

How are expedition itineraries created?

Aurora Expeditions product teams work two to three years in advance to design their programs, "with considerations including the popularity of destinations/voyages, market trends, scheduling logistics, port availability and more," the spokesperson said.

Onboard Expedition Manager (and locker room DJ) Samantha Deer added that product teams will also rely on local guides for suggestions and insights into a new area.

While many of the passengers were content with the breathtaking views – which some described as “otherwordly” – quite a few had to adjust their expectations.

Throughout our Arctic expedition, the group was able to watch Arctic foxes, reindeer, seals, walruses, puffins, and even a pair of humpback whales, but not the emblematic polar bear. A testament that nothing is guaranteed in the outdoors.

The crew, however, was incredibly diligent in scoping out locations and ensuring passengers had every opportunity to spot as much wildlife as they could.

“I think that what we're trying to do is we're trying to instill a sense of privilege,” Expedition Leader Howard Whelan told USA TODAY. “You know, what a privilege it is to see these places and, for the most part, (passengers) look after it.”

What can passengers expect from an expedition cruise?

“Goood morning, passengers!” All passengers were treated to Whelan’s cheery wake-up calls every day of the voyage with a quick rundown of what to expect that day.

Travelers need to be ready to adjust and follow a schedule that’s subject to continuous changes.

“I'm looking at the ice charts right now, and our second excursion in Svalbard is at a place called Samarinbreen, which is (an expedition on a) Zodiac cruise in front of a glacier, but right now, it looks like there's still fast ice at that end of the fjord,” Whelan explained. “We may either try and make a landing on fast ice, or we may not get in close, in which case I have to come up with an alternative, check around the area and see what's another really fantastic place to go to and I'll make that call. Ultimately, we may be going into a place in the wind direction, which may not be suitable for us to make the landing. So then we'll change that and find a place with a different exposure.”

Of course, if someone wasn’t feeling up for it, they could notify the crew that they would be staying on board. But even for those who ended up on the Sylvia Earle by happenstance, nature forced everyone to bear witness to its splendor.

“We know (passengers) have wonderful trips, but the one thing that most of us love to do is, when we're in the Zodiacs, we love to just turn the engine off and just stop and get everybody in the Zodiac to be quiet for a few minutes. Don't say a thing and just sit there,” Whelan said. “And quite often, at the end of the trip, when we asked people what was the most the most powerful experience that you had, often (people will) say when we sat silently, and we listened to the ice cracking in the glaciers … that was the best thing.”

It is worth noting that the Sylvia Earle is a purpose-built ship. It was made for these expeditions, and as such, amenities on board are fewer than those of an ocean cruise ship.

In lieu of musical shows, passengers can attend daily lectures on different aspects of what they’re experiencing. Instead of food halls with long operating hours, there is the main dining room where meals are scheduled and a premium restaurant option for an additional cost. And instead of a casino, there’s a daily coin toss to spot wildlife.

“Sometimes (the lectures are a) little too much since we're on vacation,” said Peter Cvek, from Newark, New Jersey, who was on board with his wife Mary. “But I find a lot of it very interesting and very good to know that the people (here) have a lot of knowledge.”

The purpose is to be outside, as all of the expedition guides made clear with their infectious enthusiasm for the outdoors.

“This is an opportunity to do something that I would have never thought to do. And it's sitting there right in front of you. So why not take the chance?” Cvek added.

What is a regular day like on an expedition cruise?

No two days are alike – unless you have four consecutive sea days like we did – but on our trip, they all started with a daily rundown before breakfast, getting some time to get our waterproof clothing and hiking gear ready, and then it was off to that day’s adventure. Some days, you could expect to be out until the late afternoon, but in our case, we usually did a morning trek, ate lunch at the ship, and did an early afternoon activity like hiking, kayaking, or Zodiac cruising. Then, it was back on board for a recap of the day, dinner and bedtime.

Expeditions to the Arctic or Antarctica do attract travelers looking to cross a destination off their bucket list, or as Whelan said, those "who make a place a goal rather than a place to experience."

“I think, for me, the most important thing is that people connect in a deeply personal way with these remote, wild places because I think that it feeds the soul,” Whelan said. “We do offer all of these activities and some people get caught up with thinking, ' Oh well, that's so exciting if we go kayaking or if we go skiing or whatever. ' And it's true, it is. But what's really wonderful about that is it puts you in contact with a different way of experiencing the place that we go to and I think that's the beauty of Aurora.”

The trips themselves are a financial commitment, with most Arctic expeditions starting at over $8,000 per person . Aurora Expeditions does not charge a single supplement on select voyages.

"Though our predominant demographic is still in the over 50s-60s, we are seeing that some voyages are skewing younger, depending on the destination and the activities and experiences offered," the spokesperson said. "There is certainly a subset of older millennial travelers who are adventurous and able to afford more premium experiences like an expedition to Antarctica or the Arctic, and they are attracted to our more informal and relaxed approach to expedition cruising."

Aurora Expeditions does have ADA-accessible cabins, but it's important for passengers to carefully review the itinerary and assess accommodations as soon as possible. Also, keep in mind that many of the ports will require Zodiac transportation to shore.

Both MacKay and Spiekermann, who embarked on the Sylvia Earle by opposite paths, said they enjoyed their holiday. The same goes for every passenger USA TODAY spoke to onboard – even those who got seasick.

Travel isn’t always perfect. It’s as messy as real life, and that’s part of it. Those are the moments that provide a foil. Those are the moments that change you as a person. And those are the moments Aurora Expeditions is aiming to provide for its passengers.

The reporter on this story received access to this event from Aurora Expeditions. USA TODAY maintains editorial control of content.

8 Experiences That Make A Windstar Cruise Worth The Price

I n December, I had my first cruise with Windstar. Boarding the Star Legend in St. Maarten, my husband and I set sail on a romantic and adventurous itinerary with a cruise brand known for offering exceptional vacations and a reputation to back that claim. We had a week of sailing through the Caribbean, soaking up the sights in Antigua, the BVI, and St. Bart’s to create memories that will last for a lifetime and really get to know the Windstar brand. As an avid cruiser, this cruise’s price tag was a bit higher than my previous cruises. But, let me tell you how that extra bit more than makes up for it with these eight experiences that make a Windstar cruise worth the price tag.

Windstar hosted me as a guest to familiarize myself with this brand. As always, opinions and reviews are 100 percent my own and unbiased.

1. Smaller Crowds

It might surprise you that the Windstar yachts only hold about 200–310 passengers. Not only is this a big difference in the mega cruise ships that often make you feel like a herd of cattle going through long buffet lines and waiting to disembark the ship at port, but it allows you to get to know the other cruisers. It also allows the crew to know you — your cruise preferences and your name. While I have met friendly cruise staff on each of the 50+ cruises I’ve taken, this was more like we were all just guests of Windstar, not crew and cruisers.

I especially think that, in the craziest of times we have faced since 2020, this is one of the most appealing cruise offerings possible. The Windstar team has assumed extra sanitation measures and are held to the highest standard of safety practices. This was apparent from the personalized service of staff members making up our buffet plates to the onboard doctor that was a seamless and pleasant transaction for the guests.

2. Windstar’s Stylish Yacht & Rooms

There are no cruise boats or ships with Windstar, only yachts and sailboats. I took the Star Legend , a small, incredibly picturesque yacht. The Legend was small enough to learn my way around in a short time, without wasting precious vacation time. Still, it was big enough to cuddle up for a warm-weather nap, read a good book, have an intimate conversation, or watch as we sailed through the mesmerizing blue waters.

Speaking only for the Star Legend , this yacht offers all-suite rooms. We even had a full-size closet, perfect for storing suitcases, hanging our clothes, and keeping our main room straight. Features in our stateroom that rated highest were L’Occitane en Provence toiletries, cozy robes, a comfortable couch, a heavenly bed, premium Egyptian cotton sheets, and a fully-stocked mini-fridge.

3. Lesser-Known Ports Of Call

I’ve studied cruise itineraries for over 20 years, and the ports of call for large cruise ships rarely change. I was shocked to see the remote destinations that Windstar Cruises travel to. My husband and I took the St. Maarten cruise that went to the British Virgin Islands, and though we had been to Virgin Gorda with others, Tortola and Jost Van Dyke were two places I’ve seldom seen on other itineraries. And we also had the chance to go to Gustavia (St. Bart’s), the island of all things luxury and exuberant.

If you are jonesing for a one-of-a-kind cruise, I’ll let you know that Windstar Cruises visits Tahiti , Kobe, Bordeaux , and Honfleur , not your typical cruise ports.

Pro Tip: Cruise lines can change the itinerary for the passenger’s safety and best experiences. This is common practice, so please roll with the punches should it happen. Often the passengers are unaware of the entire situation unfolding that causes these decisions.

4. Windstar’s Exceptional Food

When the general public talks about cruises, they tend to think of huge, overflowing buffets with mediocre food, but lots of it. And that makes many cruisers perfectly happy. I tend to lean toward quality over quantity, so the high-end food choices — many locally sourced — on Windstar Cruises made me a happy girl. Our meals were terrific!

Indulge in delightful breakfasts with an array of made-to-order eggs, fluffy pancakes, and decadent eggs Benedict. The buffet caters to all tastes, featuring a variety of Indian delights, smoked meats, comforting food favorites, soups, and sandwiches for lunch. With 24-hour room service, unlimited ice cream, and a charming coffee shop serving tempting mini-sandwiches and sweets, your culinary desires will be satisfied.

I was shocked (mic-drop here) that the main dining room — the basic one for those of you new to the cruise world — is the only cruise line at sea endorsed by and is the Official Cruise Line of the James Beard Foundation . Yes, you read that right. The foundation was created in part to recognize the efforts of those putting America’s culinary skills a cut above the rest, and that is apparent with the chef-inspired dishes on these ships. Windstar Cruises brings people to plates on the high seas that are “180 degrees from ordinary.”

5. Star Legend’s Specialty Restaurants

As if the food wasn’t remarkable enough, there are specialty restaurants on a Windstar cruise. The Star Legend had the lovely Spanish restaurant, Cuadro 44, and Candles, a classic steakhouse. Cuadro 44 offers coastal Spanish tapas, wines, and exotic seafood in a vibrant, energetic setting, while Candles is a more romantic restaurant with white table cloths, candlelight, and al fresco dining.

Now get this… they are included in your cruise fare. You pay no additional fees to dine in these restaurants that serve high-end items like Ibérico ham, lamb chops, Galician-style octopus, and jumbo prawns.

Fun Fact: Cuadro 44 only holds 38 passengers, so this small-scale dining experience is highly desirable.

6. Adventurous Cruise Excursions

I’ve been told that Windstar caters to a more active group of travelers. The website boasts 2,500 one-of-a-kind tours, and that is mind-boggling. I found many of the Windstar cruise excursions to be on the moderate to strenuous side of the scale, but there was still plenty for others to enjoy, too. From scuba diving to visiting private islands, there was a wide range of activities and experiences.

Windstar also offers many custom tours, including a carefully-curated excursion for your family and friends, or even a solo trip, to see the sights you wish to visit with an English-speaking guide in a private car or van. These guides are also fully bonded, insured, and licensed.

Check into the culinary shore excursions onboard Windstar Cruises, as well. These opportunities take cruise passengers to local wineries, breweries, and even hands-on cooking classes to learn from the locals and eat and drink with goods from the region you are visiting.

7. Ratio Of Cruise Staff To Cruise Guests

My cruise ship could potentially hold 312 passengers. On this particular sailing, there were only around 158 passengers, which meant running at half capacity for guests. This meant no lines, no packed swimming pools or hot tubs, and nearly 1.25 cruise staff per passenger.

I swear, I don’t know how the Windstar staff does it, but they would remember every name, drink (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) choice, favorite things, and where we were from. Often, we didn’t have time to think we needed something before a smiling face showed up with said item in hand. I kept thinking of the Ritz Carlton tagline, “My pleasure Mrs. Pittman.”

Fun Fact: For even more excellent cruise concierge service, allow Windstar to help you book your air travel, pre and post hotel and tour reservations, and even your itinerary for a fantastic vacation.

8. A Unique Beach Barbecue Dining Experience

Something new to my cruising experiences happened on the Windstar Star Legend . It was supposed to be two things, but one got postponed and then canceled due to inclement weather. But, the one that did take place was incredible, and I think you will agree.

In a port where we had to tender (take small boats) to the shore, Windstar set up a beach barbecue for all of its guests to enjoy for lunch. Virgin Gorda was the perfect setting for the festive tables, steel-drum musicians, paella and bbq meats buffet, and tropical backdrop. The amount of effort that went into shuttling all things necessary (plates, glassware, utensils, food, beverages, linens, etc.) to the shore for us to have a memorable lunch honestly brings tears to my eyes. What a fantastic brand and staff that braves, in our case, extreme waves and weather conditions for a quick dining experience that creates such a heartwarming memory. It was well-appreciated.

Windstar, if you made that macaroni and cheese because I mentioned it, thank you. They canceled the deck barbecue mentioned above due to the weather, but I heard from repeat passengers that this is one of their favorite Windstar offerings.

Pro Tip: I like to bring a few cards from home and leave a tip for my favorite cruise staff, along with a personalized message to thank them for enriching my vacation.
