If you’re like most people, you probably don’t put that much thought into which pair of underwear you choose for a plane ride. But maybe you should. After all, travelling is uncomfortable enough to begin with, so make your life easier by choosing a comfortable and breathable pair of underwear.

When travelling, you should focus on more than just comfort in a pair of underwear. Also consider breathability, as well as how well the underwear will fight off odors and wick moisture when you start to sweat.

This guide will walk you through some of the best travel underwear out there. Everyone has their own shape and size, so we tried to include underwear that reflect this. Also keep in mind that not every trip is the same, so you should have a mix of different pairs depending on what you plan on doing as you travel.

We also know that there are quite a few good pairs of underwear out there not on this list. Although we love all of the pairs reviewed here, you can also use this guide to go out and find great travel underwear on your own.

Best Travel Underwear for Men

Private Luxury: Smartwool are known for making some of the best performance underwear. Although these briefs are great for just about any occasion, the snug, cozy fit and anti odor properties make them an excellent pair for travelling.

The briefs are 87% merino wool and 13% nylon, giving them a soft, natural feel on your skin. These briefs become a second skin, fitting comfortably when worn for long periods. They have a tight but forgiving build that won’t ride up when you sit or move around.

What really makes the Smartwool a great choice for travellers is the anti odor properties of the wool. You’ll only smell a bit worse when you get off the plane than went you got on. And since they fight off bacteria, they can be worn a second time if you run out of clean pairs.

Although they don’t dry quite as quickly as all synthetic underwear, the Smartwool briefs should dry fairly much faster than cotton underwear. You can wash them at night and expect them to be ready to go in the morning.

The main downside to using the Smartwool briefs for travelling is that they aren’t the best choice for hot climates. The wool does a great job of wicking moisture, but it may struggle to keep up if you’re trekking through a hot and humid area. They’re also a bit more expensive than other pairs, so you may only want to buy a pair or two.

2. Woolly Merino Wool Boxer Brief

These underwear, with options for both men and women, are great staples for any trip. They’re a no frills pair that’s comfortable and lightweight, and they do an excellent job of fighting odors.

The Woolly, although lightweight, are a bit heavier than some of the synthetic pairs reviewed here. If you’re mainly just sitting on a plane or travelling during the winter, then they’re a great option . But if you’re travelling around a hot and humid city, they may get a bit too hot.

Made almost entirely of nylon, the Lapasa briefs are thin and breathable, giving you plenty of ventilation as you travel. They’re also quite lightweight, so they won’t get in your way or scrunch up when you sit down.

The Lapasa have a nice fit that accommodates your nether regions, stretching and moving along with you. They don’t ride up or bunch, so you won’t have to awkwardly reach down to unscrunch your underwear while the person in the seat next to you tries to look away.

What really makes the Lapasa underwear stand out is the quick drying material. If you’re moving around the city on a hot day, they do a great job of wicking moisture and quickly drying out. When you’re on the road, you can wash them, hang them up, and have them ready to go in the morning.

The Lapasa are also one of the best values you’ll find for travel underwear. They’re more affordable than wool pairs, so you can buy a few before your trip and be set. The one downside of this is that they wear out fairly quickly, so don’t expect these to last you as long as high end pairs.

4. ExOfficio Give-N-Go Boxer

This Time, That Smell Isn’t You: These underwear are a favorite of budget travellers, with a lightweight build that does a great job of wicking moisture. There’s not much to get excited about with the ExOfficio, and that’s not a bad thing. They’re a simple pair that you won’t have to think much about. Just throw them in your bag and go.

Made mostly of light nylon fabric, these briefs do a great job of airing out the basement. They wick moisture about as well as any of the pairs reviewed here, so they’re a great option if you’re travelling in hot and sweaty areas. Since they dry quickly, you can wash and hang dry them and have them ready for the next day’s adventure.

They also use antimicrobial fabrics to prevent bacteria from building up. We’re not exactly sure how this works, but we do know that it’s effective. You probably still won’t smell great after a long day of travelling, but you’ll smell much fresher than if you were wearing a pair of cotton briefs. If you need to, you can rewear a pair without too much shame, although we still recommend a quick wash.

Just don’t expect luxury with the ExOfficio underwear. They’re meant for travellers, not for kings, so you won’t feel like you’re sitting on a velvet cushion. They also wear out a bit faster than we would like. Fortunately, they’re affordable, so grab as many pairs as you need for your trip.

5. Saxx Ultra Boxer Brief

Saxx Me Up: Saxx is one of the most successful in a new wave of companies offering high end performance briefs. They’re a bit pricey, which puts some buyers off. But if you’re willing to splurge a little, you’ll get one of the most comfortable pairs of underwear out there.

What sets Saxx underwear apart is the fit. They hold tight to your skin, which helps them wick moisture and keep you dry. But despite this tight fit, they don’t constrict, and they give you plenty of room for your carry on. They also don’t roll up, keeping everything just where it should be.

The Saxx aren’t designed as travel briefs per se, although they do meet just about all the criteria you’d want in a pair built for the road. They’re lightweight and comfortable, while still offering plenty of breathability. They don’t do quite as well with odor as some of the other pairs reviewed here, although they’re much better than cotton briefs.

Saxx underwear aren’t quick dry either, although they should dry faster than your standard cotton briefs. If you wash them at night, you might need around 12 hours for them to fully dry.

If you’re looking for a great all around pair of briefs, then the Saxx are a great option. They’re a versatile pair that you can wear while doing just about anything. And if colors and patterns are your thing, you’ll find dozens of different briefs so that you can mix it up.

Best Travel Underwear for Women

1. exofficio give-n-go bikini briefs.

Like the ExOfficio briefs for men, these underwear offer a great mix of value and comfort. They’re not exactly a luxury good, but that shouldn’t worry you when you’re out on the road.

The bikini briefs are built mainly from nylon, giving them great ventilation. You won’t get sweaty during long days of exploration or while sitting on the plane. The light build also keeps them from rubbing and chaffing against your skin, so you won’t have any unseamly rashes at the end of the day.

Like any good pair of travel underwear, these do an excellent job of controlling odor. They have built in anti bacterial properties, keeping you smelling fresh even on hot and sweaty days. Plus, you can wear them on consecutive days if your underwear stocks are running low.

The ExOfficio bikini briefs dry quickly, so they are great for summer travelling. You can clean them at night and have a dry pair of underwear in the morning as well, so you’ll be able to pack lighter than usual.

The only real downside to these briefs is the build quality. They feel great, but they don’t always last long. To be fair, that’s to be expected given the price point, so you’re still getting your money’s worth. Just make sure to buy a few extra pairs in case they start to wear out.

2. Icebreaker Siren Thong

Ice Ice Lady: The Icebreaker siren thong has a fitted feel to them, so they map the contours of your body as you move. The wool feels great on your skin, and you’ll still get enough air to prevent moisture and odors from building up. They are a bit tight, so if you like a looser pair, then you may want to choose a size up.

Like other great pairs of travel underwear, these dry quickly, making them perfect for long trips. They can be worn in humid climates, and you can wash them out at the end of the day to have them ready to go the next morning. Although we don’t recommend packing just one pair for your trip, you could probably get away with it with these.

The merino construction gives the underwear natural antibacterial properties, helping them fight off odors. No, you’re not going to smell like a fresh spring at the end of the day. But you’ll still be fit for human company, which is a lot better than you’d get with most pairs of cotton underwear.

Do note that this is a thong, so don’t expect the same level of comfort that you’ll get from some of the other pairs reviewed here. You might experience some riding up too, although the material does a good job of staying in place most of the time.

This is one of the best values you’ll find for a quality travel thong, and you can expect a full day of comfort without too much sweat or bunching. Plus, you’ll save a lot of space in your bag on your next trip.

3. Under Armour Pure Stretch Hipster

Breathe Easy: Under Armour is known for making some of the best performance underwear out there. Although designed with athletes in mind, this pair is great for travellers as well. They breathe easily, helping air out your nethers. And they feature soft nylon material that won’t leave marks after long days.

Since these underwear for built to handle sweat, you won’t have to worry about swamp ass on the plane or while moving around. The nylon feels great on your skin, and you won’t notice that you’re wearing anything most of the time.

Plus, you get three pairs in the basic pack, so you’ll have enough to tide you over for short trips. This makes them one of the best deals you can find for a pair of quality underwear.

The biggest drawback is that some people have fit issues with the Under Armour. It’s a bit hit and miss, with some people reporting that the underwear fit them like a glove, whereas others complain that the fabric bunches up. They also don’t have an elastic waistband, so you should make sure you order the right size, otherwise they will sag.

4. Smartwool PhD Seamless Mid Rise Bikini

The Smart Choice: Smartwool make some of the best performance undergarments you can find. Although known mainly for their men’s briefs, they also make a range of excellent bikini briefs, including this pair. You’ll get hours of soft, wool covered comfort, as well as great breathability and anti odor protection.

The merino wool construction uses varied knit textures, which increases the amount of air that reaches your crotch. Although this doesn’t sound pretty, it means that you won’t have as much sweat buildup, and you also won’t heat up throughout the day.

They feature a fairly wide elastic band that gives your a comfortable, tight fit without too much squeeze. Everything stays where it should, so you shouldn’t have to worry about the underwear riding up your ass.

The wool also dries quickly, which makes the pair great for wicking moisture as you move around. If you need to wash them, just hang them up and they’ll be dry in a few hours.

The only real downside to the Smartwool bikini briefs is the price. The pair will cost you a fair penny, so you may want to mix in some lower cost underwear to round out your travel collection. But given the quality and comfort, you’ll be happy that you bought at least one pair.

5. Underworks Disposable Cotton Underwear

A Brief Stay: Carrying around a bag of dirty underwear isn’t anyone’s idea of fun. So why worry about washing your underwear ? With the Underworks, just wear, take off, and throw away. This pair of underwear isn’t going to win any awards for its comfort, but it’s a great option for travelers who want to pack lightly.

The briefs are made entirely out of cotton. Although we don’t usually recommend cotton for travel, these are pretty thin, helping circulate air and prevent overheating. They do a decent job of wicking moisture as well, although you might start to get a bit swampy by the end of the day.

The fit on the underwear is much better than you would expect from a disposable pair. They won’t ride up much, and they feel soft throughout the day. You won’t want to write home about it, but overall wearing the underwear is a pleasant experience.

The biggest draw to this pair of underwear is the convenience. Worried about carrying around a week’s worth of dirty underwear? Then just throw each pair away when you’re done. It’s not a great long term solution, but it works well when you’re on short, active trips where doing laundry isn’t an option.

Best Travel Underwear: Buying Guide

The right pair of travel underwear is all about going the distance. Your favorite pair of soft briefs may be great for work, but can turn into an itchy, swampy mess on a plane. You’ll also be moving around a lot more when you travel, so you need underwear that won’t put your nether regions in a vice grip.

Breathable Travel Underwear

Nothing taints a plane ride more than an itchy taint. Look for underwear that are built to breathe, allowing air to circulate.

Cotton underwear, while soft, tends to trap moisture. They may be comfortable for an hour or two, but then they turn into a sweaty mess.

Wool and synthetic materials will do a better job with ventilation, which will prevent moisture buildup and keep you at a comfortable temperature. More air also means less odor, keeping you fresher for longer.

Moisture Wicking Travel Underwear

There’s nothing worse than running out of underwear on the road. You never know when you’ll need to wash a pair to wear the next day, so try to find underwear that will dry quickly.

In general, synthetic materials will dry much faster than cotton, which can take a full day to dry out. This will make it easier to pack light, as you can wash your underwear on the go without having to wait for them to dry.

Odor Eliminating Travel Underwear

You won’t want to be the smelly person on the plane or bus. Choose a pair of underwear that has anti odor properties so that you’ll still smell civilized when you get off the plane.

There are a number of pairs of travel underwear that have built in anti bacterial layers, so that you can wear them for long periods without a noticeable stench. You may also be able to wear them a few times, allowing you to pack light.

Lightweight Travel Underwear

When your travelling, you want to carry as little weight as possible. Thin underwear is best for long flights and days moving around. You can also stuff more pairs into your bag, so you won’t run out of fresh underwear during your trip.

Most Comfortable Travel Underwear

You don’t want to sit on the plane with a pair of underwear riding up your ass. A good pair of travel underwear provides a nice cushion as you sit, but is still thin and light enough to let you move around freely.

Whether you like briefs or trunks, a man needs a solid pair of underwear when traveling, and these six pairs offer everything a good adventurer needs. 

That pack of whitey-tighties you bought at Target was probably a good bargain, but they’re not exactly ideal if you have travel plans in your future. Standard cotton traps moisture (and odor), and the fit of standard underwear doesn’t exactly help with mobility or flexibility. 

What we need when we’re traveling (whether it’s on a plane or along a trail) is underwear that can wick away moisture while being super comfortable and flexible. In some scenarios, you’ll want heavier, warmer underwear, and in others, you’ll want something light and breezy.

Made with a waffle-like knit fabric, these underwear are unbelievably stretchy and soft. They move with your body, don’t bunch up, and don’t feel constricting. 

Plus, the brand’s AIRKNIT fabric is made from nylon microfibers that are both moisture-wicking and odor-fighting, so they don’t just feel good, but they’re also built for performance. These certainly aren’t the cheapest pair of underwear out there, but they are absolutely worth the price.

Best men’s travel underwear for cold weather

Smartwool intraknit boxer brief.

Smartwool is known for their high-quality merino products and has long been a favorite for outdoors enthusiasts. Their Intraknit boxer briefs are also perfect for anyone who will be spending time outdoors during their travels – especially in cooler weather. The TENCEL fabric combines a blend of materials like merino and lyocell to create a very stretchy yet relatively thick pair of underwear. They form to your body and have minimal seams to reduce chafing (another great addition if wearing under layers during cold weather).

What makes them so great is that they’re both breathable thanks to the fabric, while also being snug and thick. They’re warm yet ventilated, which is exactly what you want. These are the most expensive pair on the list coming in at $50, but remember that these are performance underwear designed with a purpose and aren’t just any old pair of Hanes.

Best budget men’s travel underwear

Wirarpa ultra-soft briefs.

If you are looking for a cheaper option, Wirarpa is a brand you should check out. I originally had no idea what these underwear were, but I kept noticing guys in the locker room wearing them and they looked super soft and lightweight. After searching on Amazon, I saw that they have a 4.5-star rating based on almost 19,000 reviews…which is pretty damn impressive. 

That was a little over a year ago and since then these have become my go-to for daily wear. I’ve worn these while hiking in Wisconsin, at the gym, on airplanes, during long drives, and pretty much everywhere in between. They’re soft, stretchy, comfy, breathable, and have held up really well in the year I’ve owned them. Plus, they’re super cheap. Does it get any better than that? These are also available as a trunk.

Best athletic men’s travel underwear

Bn3th pro boxer brief.

For starters, we need to talk about what made BN3TH famous – their ball pouch. It sounds like a gimmick at first, but BN3TH makes their underwear differently, having specially-made ball pouches that don’t smoosh your banana and walnuts up against your body, and instead give them a dedicated space to have room to breathe, while also being secure and kept in place. 

On top of that, the pro boxer briefs have an anti-friction finish to avoid static and bunching and are made with a breathable mesh fabric that’s comprised of 89% recycled polyester. For the guy who loves being active (or just wants their goodies to feel comfy on a long journey), these are an excellent choice.

Best boxers for men’s travel

Rei co-op everyday boxer briefs.

Personally, I really like briefs, but not everyone does. Some guys still love old-school boxers, and if you’re one of them then you’ll want one of REI’s co-op boxer briefs. Yes, these are boxer briefs and not boxers. But trust me, traditional boxers aren’t fun when traveling. When you’re on-the-go, when you’re sweating, when you’re constantly moving (and often wearing the same outfit for the entire day), you don’t want loose cotton boxers underneath your pants getting all sweaty and bunched up. 

But if you like the loose feel of boxers, REI’s boxer briefs are a great choice. They’re more relaxed than other boxer briefs and they even have a functional fly. Plus, being made of polyester, they’re much softer and smoother than traditional boxers, meaning you’ll be way more comfy. 

Best natural and sustainable men’s travel underwear

Free fly bamboo motion boxer briefs.

Lightweight, flat-seamed, and complete with a four-way stretch design. Already these are a great pair of underwear. But these boxer briefs are even better because they’re made using sustainable organic bamboo. Bamboo literally grows like a weed…worse than a weed actually, able to grow 3-feet in a single day. It doesn’t need fertilizer or pesticides, it doesn’t even need much water – it’s an excellent sustainable alternative to cotton. 

But the Motion Boxer Brief isn’t your standard bamboo underwear either. They’re not barky, rough, or fibrous. They’re soft…very, very soft. Some of the softest underwear I own. These are also true boxer briefs, not trunks, so they’re a bit longer than the other pairs on this list, making them perfect for guys who like the longer fit.

I like to move nimbly when I travel, and a wheeled bag or duffel makes me less agile.

I fit everything I need conveniently onto my back, so that’s how I roll.

Backpacks make life on the go much more doable.

I understand some people can’t wear backpacks because of back pain or other health issues.

Consider a duffel bag, tote, or wheeled suitcase instead if that’s the case.

Duffel bags are a great no-fuss solution to personal item-sized bag travel.

A duffel is ideal when you need extra space to bring a few extra things outside your main luggage.

They also help maximize your storage space compared to the other two options above.

A duffel can be slightly more annoying to carry than a backpack; however, you can fit a wider variety of stuff inside one since they’re reasonably malleable and fit into oddly shaped spaces (like beneath airplane seats).

I recently traveled to Vietnam for a month with only a messenger bag.

I’d have chosen no bag at all if I didn’t need my laptop and other work essentials.

I could fit my laptop, a change of clothes, and a few personal items in my messenger bag, but nothing else.

But not everyone is a minimalist travel junkie.

Even so, if you still have an extra bag in addition to your carry-on, a messenger is a quality solution and should fit all the stuff you need during your flight.

We’ve included some top-shelf options for wheeled mini carry-on bags that’ll fit under the seat ahead of you.

Soft- or hard-roller bags are best for those wanting more protection for their belongings or anyone who doesn’t want to carry a backpack or duffel bag for long periods.

If you’re flying frequently, however, a hard case may not be the best style of bag for you.

The Bagger ULTRA 25 is a backpack designed for fast and light trips, as it’s made from waterproof ULTRA fabric and weighs in at a minuscule 10.7 ounces.

This is my go-to travel backpack for trips I take without my bulky camera gear .

For trips where I do bring my camera along, I use the slightly more spacious and well-padded TOM BIHN Techonaut 30, the following recommendation on this list.

Between the two bags, I slightly prefer my Zpacks.

Thanks to its super durable, lightweight, and waterproof ULTRA material, the Bagger is perfect for ultralight gear nerds or anyone aiming to cut their pack weight and brave the elements.

It’s an incredibly functional and versatile option for personal-item-sized bag travel, and I can’t recommend it enough.

My one nitpick is its zippered water bottle pocket, which can get a bit tight when the bag is fully packed.

I’d have preferred a more accessible pocket (or two) as you’ll find in the Bagger ULTRA, but I understand entirely TOM BIHN keeping to their sleek and zipped-up style.

All in all, this is a heck of a bag.

Why We Like the Techonaut 30: It’s an incredibly versatile, comfortable, stylish, and functional bag that can also serve as a duffel. We think it’s the perfect pack to consider if you’re pondering becoming a one-bag traveler.

What to Keep in Mind: The nearly $400 price tag is high, but think of this bag as a decades-long travel investment.

First and foremost, carry-on bags must fit in the space regulations allow.

Specifically, a “personal items” handbag, backpack, or purse must fit under the seat in front of you, not in the overhead bin.

Some budget airlines measure your bag at the gate by testing whether it fits inside an official sizing slot.

If it doesn’t fit, your only options are to pay a hefty gate fee to bring it or to leave the bag behind.

The less your empty bag weighs, the less it contributes to the overall weight you’ll handle as you travel.

A bag is only as good as its components.

Writing about best ladies underwear for travel isn’t necessarily my first choice for a topic but let’s face it: it’s an important one that can make or break your trip.

Sound a bit excessive?

Think about it. If your outer clothes are uncomfortable, you can stop and change. It’s a bit harder with what you’re wearing  under  your clothes –  privacy isn’t always available . Whatever has happened to that underwear will have to wait until you get back to your room.

Yes, of course you can wear your regular underwear when you travel and that’s fine for walking around the city. But if you’re going hiking or plan to do anything more strenuous than stalking the Mona Lisa, purchasing the  best travel underwear  for women makes perfect sense.

Many ladies travel underwear choices offer things like   light, practical and washable options , all of which make a huge difference in packing and traveling!

So let’s look at what is travel underwear, why you need it, examples of different kinds (depending on your travel style and body), and I’ll provide some travel underwear reviews to help you feel confident in picking the best panties for travel.

All the above travel panties are good travel buys and it’s hard to make a decision, so I’ve highlighted some of these pairs for you here – those I consider to be some of the best underwear for travelling.

Although they do include nylon and spandex, these are primarily made from organically-grown bamboo (a sustainable plant fiber). The price is less than half the cost of ExOfficio panties, making them easier on your pocket book. They only come in basic “boring” colors, and hit mid-rise height (just above the hips). They do tend to run small, so give yourself some breathing room to prevent chafing or binding. If synthetic materials tend to irritate you, try these instead. The biggest drawback? Like my favorite cotton panties, they just don’t dry as quickly as purely-synthetic products.

• CONS: Run small | Limited color choices | Not quick-drying

• We all have our favorite travel underwear - and ANLIQI is mine. I used an earlier model (which I dont think is available anymore but these are very similar) on my one-year cross-Africa trip and I had two pairs. They both withstood constant washing - I washed one pair every night, so thats about 170 washes in a year per pair. They kept their shape, unbelievably! Most important when youre constantly on the go is that they dry very quickly - overnight indoors for sure, but after a few hours in a draft. When youre packing and unpacking daily, as I was, this is an irreplaceable advantage. These keep you cool and fresh, too, even in the hottest African tropical weather. Heading for a long trip but need to travel light? Get two of these.

First things first: when you choose women’s travel underwear,  consider the style .

Classic/Full-Cut Brief

These are probably what you imagine when someone says “underwear” (or pants, panties, undies or whatever you call them). They’ll take up more space in your bag, but that’s about the only travel-related downside.

Like the classic brief, these provide  full bottom coverage  and rise up on the stomach, but the leg openings are cut higher towards the waistband. This reveals more skin in the front, while keeping full coverage in the back.

As the name implies, these are briefs that  sit at hip-level . You still get medium back/bottom coverage, but with less fabric up around your midsection. These are a great choice if you prefer low-rise trousers, or if standard briefs tend to cut into your tummy. They still offer enough coverage to keep your comfortable during a hike, but will also save space overall.

Essentially  a hipster with a narrower waistband . Again, great for anyone who wears low-rise pants or simply dislikes extra fabric around their middle. These are probably the best compromise between comfort and space-saving.

Because only men can wear shorts? Despite the sexist name, these women’s underwear  closely resemble men’s boxer briefs . The fabric is skin-tight like normal panties, but these look more like shorts rather than bikini bottoms. Most sit on or below your hips, and many women love the full bottom coverage, while others dislike that the legs sometimes ride, roll or bunch. They’ll take up more space in your bag, but otherwise they make great undergarments.

Not to be crass, but these are bikini panties that  show off a lot more cheek ! They aren’t as revealing as a thong, and offer more coverage to your undercarriage. Women often wear these under jeans or trousers because you’re less likely to see panty lines, but you still feel like you’re wearing underwear. They save space, for sure, just make sure they stay put and don’t leave you with a wedgie!

(Another name for this style is the “tanga”: Although some manufacturers consider these to be two different styles of underwear, others use the terms interchangeably. If anything,  the tanga provides even less coverage  than the cheeky.)

These come in various degrees of tinyness, but the central marker of a thong is  frontal coverage and an exposed rear . Some thongs have wider waistbands than others, and those connected with just a string are called g-strings. While these will certainly save space in your bag, I wouldn’t bet on them for comfort. And, you can’t wick away moisture with so little fabric.

One more thing: on a very short trip,  women’s   disposable underwear for travel  might be worth considering. You can actually wash some of the models once or twice so they’re not one-time wear only (the environment thanks you).

What to look for in travel undies

Not all travel underwear are alike, so here’s what you should look for.

• Best quick-dry women’s underwear : When you’re traveling, the last thing you want to cart around is soggy underwear so yes, quick dry women’s underwear is a good idea. Women’s underwear that dries quickly is made of modern synthetics that are so performing you can wash and wring your undies after dinner and wear them again for breakfast. • Comfort:  If it’s hot you certainly don’t want the elastics to pinch and chafe, around your thighs or your waist. (Plus ill-fitting undies  can be bad for your health !)  Click here for the best women’s underwear for hot weather
• Form : Make sure those elastics are sturdy and last as long as your trips. Saggy elastics are just as uncomfortable as tightly gripping ones. The elastic should last at least as long as your trip!
• Fibers : You’ll probably want something that breathes – and most modern fabrics do, while wicking sweat from your body and keeping you comfortably cool. Some panties have  anti-microbial properties , useful when you can’t change as often as you’d like. Wicking properties are important to control sweating. 

• Colors : A pair that matches your skin tone is the most versatile and reduces the risk of visibility through light fabrics. You can of course spring for something red or fuschia or anything under the sun – just avoid packing white pants. 
• Style : Boyshort, thongs, bikini, hipster, brief? This comes down to personal preference, and there’s no “right” answer. Boyshorts and full-cut briefs take up the most space, while thongs and bikinis can fit almost anywhere. But don’t pack tiny underwear just to leave more room in your bag: you’ll regret it a million times if they aren’t comfortable.
• Easy to wash : It’s hard to tell before you actually try to wash a pair because a lot depends on the soap you use or the hardness of water but yes, when you travel, your undies should wash with ease.

In addition to the bottom − known as underpants, panties or travel knickers, depending on the country − there’s also a top called a camisole or vest (you’ll find several on  this page ).  The best camisoles for travel are made of wicking material and mostly used in colder weather.

When I travel, I sometimes take along a camisole (if I’m heading into the cold) and  2-3 pairs of travel women’s underwear : two if I plan to wash a pair every night, three if I’m feeling a bit lazy. If I’m washing a pair each night, you can see how important it is that they dry quickly!

I've traveled all over the world -- and few items are more important in the pack list than a good pair of underwear. First off, I'm a briefs guy. There's no room in my suitcase or drawers at home for anything else. If you're rocking classic boxers, good for you but I don't know how you do it. For the best blend of comfort and utility, it's briefs all the way.

Regardless of your preference, if you're still wearing cotton, you're doing it wrong . Get yourself one of these fine options to swaddle your nether regions and you won't be disappointed on your next hike or backpacking trip.

Ex Officio Give-n-Go Briefs

These are the classics. ExOfficio has been making great travel underwear for years, and the Give-n-Gos are a tried and true purchase. Nothing flashy about it, no crazy prints, just great performance. I've worn too few pairs of these for much longer than I'm willing to admit. I once brought only 2 pairs on a 5-week trip to Southeast Asia . They'll last you for years and the moisture-wicking will keep the funk at bay.

Saxx Volt Boxer Brief

A new-ish entrant, Saxx is probably my current favorite. I've worn these hiking in Peru, backcountry skiing all season, and road tripping around British Columbia. The Volt has a great blend of performance, and casual comfort.

They difference here is definitely the Ballpark Pouch. I won't go into too much detail here, but guys, you can figure it out. The "hammock" is excellent at maintaining stability and preventing chaffing -- you'll notice the difference immediately. They also reversed the seams, so the more "comfortable" side of the stitching is on the inside. I don't know how much of a difference this really makes, but they sure are comfortable. As expected for a performance brief, the wick moisture great as well. Plus, you get a bunch of great styles. I'd rather wear cool looking underwear than not 🤷‍♂️.The one criticism I have seen (but haven't experienced yet) is that some pairs can ride up the thighs a bit. Not sure if this is due to design, or fit issues though. More testing will be needed.

Smartwool Merino 150 Brief

Tried and true, I have several pairs of Smartwool briefs that I really like. The merino wool makes for a lightweight, super comfortable fit that stays cool in hot weather and warm in cooler weather. As expected for merino wool -- if you haven't made the switch from synthetic or tried wool baselayers, you're missing out. My Saxx feel a  little bit more performance oriented, so my Smartwools tend to be worn more around town or on shorter days. But that's just personal preference.

I’ve been covering aspects of luggage and travel bag design for Wirecutter for nearly a decade, and I have personally researched, tested, and compared hundreds of bags in that time. I personally try to do most of my travel with a single backpack, whenever possible. I spent nine months roaming around Hawaii with not much more than that, and I spent another six months nomadically couch-surfing in New York City.

I reached out to writers who specialize in traveling the world carrying everything they need in a single bag: Eytan Levy, the owner and operator of the Snarky Nomad travel website; James Feess, founder of The Savvy Backpacker ; and Sharon Gourlay, of the Where’s Sharon? travel website. I also spoke with moderators of Reddit’s r/onebag and r/heronebag forums, as well as with Chase Reeves, bag fanatic, reviewer, and owner of Matterful .

We researched and tested bags designed for those who want to travel light and stay flexible while flying, without the burden of checking luggage. For some people, the challenge of cutting down a packing list is intimidating. But if you can get past that initial hurdle, traveling with a single bag is a revelation. With fewer items, you have more time to concentrate on and appreciate the journey.

• When you’re not loaded down by heavy luggage, it’s easy to remain more mobile. And it’s easier to adjust your plans mid-trip. If you’re willing to do laundry on the road, then one bag is all you need to travel indefinitely. At its heart, one-bag travel allows you to discover more—not just about the places you’re going but also about yourself and what you really need day to day.
• Size and weight still matter. If you desire more creature comforts or more gear, or if you plan to be away for a long time across multiple climates, you’ll want a bigger travel backpack . These larger bags tend not to be carry-on-friendly, however, especially in Europe, so be prepared to check them.

This durable bag’s clamshell design makes it easy to organize your stuff. And due to its strap design, this bag can be worn on your back or carried in your hand while you’re on the move.

Buying Options

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is an easy-to-organize, comfortable-to-carry bag for getaways lasting just a few days or a whole week.

It’s one bag that can do it all. This is a great all-around bag for any traveler who’s dedicated to packing light, or for a smaller person who wants less to carry. There are handles on all four sides of this bag, so it’s easy to grab no matter where you’ve stowed it. It’s also protected by a full lifetime warranty, and it has the build quality to back that up. After more than four years of testing, this single backpack (plus a personal item ) has replaced nearly every travel bag or piece of luggage I use.

It comes in various sizes, but we think the middle-of-the-road version is the best. Cotopaxi also makes the Allpa in 28-liter and 42-liter sizes. But for us, the 35-liter bag is the best option. At 42 liters, this bag becomes heavy for most people to carry when it is fully packed, and we’d prefer that it had a more-robust hip belt. At 28 liters, the bag becomes a touch small for most people, and its internal organization feels fussy for shorter trips, such as an overnight. Cotopaxi also makes a hip pack , which is designed to fit snugly into the Allpa bag’s front top compartment. It’s a neat little addition to the bag, and it is worth getting if you like wearing fanny packs while you travel.

It’s organized, easy to pack, and easy to carry. The Allpa bag has a clamshell design, so it opens like a hard-sided suitcase—a large YKK zipper runs around three sides of the bag, allowing it to fall open into two halves when unzipped. On the right side is a deep compartment, spacious enough for two large packing cubes or half a suitcase’s worth of clothing (which you access through a mesh zippered flap). On the left, there’s space for one more medium-size packing cube behind a zippered flap. Above that there are two smaller pockets with high-visibility backing—useful when you’re looking for hard-to-differentiate personal items.

It’s secure but still accessible. The Allpa pack has two side-access zippers—great for on-the-go access, especially when the bag is hanging from your shoulder. One of these reveals a flat computer pocket with a padded false bottom; so if you drop the bag, it won’t land on the corner of your computer. The other reveals a “secret” pocket with a hidden zipper and access to the main compartment. All of the main compartment zippers are protected by security loops, which you thread the zipper through at the end of its run. This prevents anyone from subtly or quickly grabbing a zipper and opening your bag when you aren’t paying attention.

It’s comfortable to carry. The Allpa bag’s hip belt—which can be removed while the bag is on your back—is substantial enough that it’s comfortable to wear when you need it. With or without the hip belt, the Allpa bag is comfortable to carry over long distances. However, folks who have longer torsos (over 19 inches) may find that the waist belt sits a little high off the hips, unless you fully extend the shoulder straps. Speaking of shoulder straps, unlike the ones on our other picks, the Allpa bag’s straps are contoured to fit people who have large or small chests. It’s not a specifically gendered design, but our female tester noticed the improvement right away.

The Allpa pack is made with 1680-denier ballistic nylon, similar to the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . (Denier is a measure of a fabric’s fiber thickness.) It feels similar to a strong canvas, but it has a more prominent weave. This is the type of bag that’s as easy to toss into an overhead compartment as it is into the back of a rusty pickup truck. And it also includes a rainfly, which is unique in this category.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

• Though this pack is well organized for packing, it’s less ideal as a mobile office. The Allpa pack has a minimal amount of administrative organization—places to keep pens and papers, spaces to hold tickets, and so forth. This is where a good personal item comes in handy. However, if you want to travel with just this one bag, there are a few nooks you can hide things in. The front organizer is deep enough that you can also fit several small organizing pouches, if you want, or the aforementioned fanny pack.
• We prefer the model without the TPU front. Cotopaxi does enjoy playing around with fabrics and colors. Sometimes the company has released the Allpa pack without the TPU-lined front panel. Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L

An easily customizable large bag for long trips and expensive gear.

This bag was built with photographers in mind. Yet most travelers will appreciate its easy accessibility, clever tuck-away straps, and the elegant way the bag expands and contracts. The accessory cubes cost extra, though.

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is a good choice for those carrying more expensive gear—especially camera gear. It’s also great for those who prefer a large, backpack-based packing system.

One bag provides many configurations. Some bags in this category are built to do one thing extremely well—be carried on your back. But the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is built to adapt. It’s the Swiss Army knife of backpacks: adjustable, customizable, and (if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers) an almost perfect system for a photographer or gearhead on the move. Most bags’ expanding mechanisms aren’t worth the extra zipper they’re built on, and they look about as attractive as a boiled ham splitting out of its plastic packaging. That’s not the case with the Peak Design: This bag looks just as good fully packed at 45 liters as it does compressed to a 30-liter daypack.

It’s expandable, with clever folds and zippers. You can access the bag through a back panel (which doubles as a computer and tablet pouch) as well as a front one (if you unzip the pass-through divider). You can also get into the main compartment via two wing-like trapezoidal flaps, which run along each side of the pack. In its natural shape, the Travel Backpack holds 35 liters, but an expansion zipper lets the bag swell to 45 liters. If you want to use the bag as a daypack, you fold in the top corners and snap them down, reducing the bag’s volume to a slim 30 liters. In this configuration, it will still feel larger than a normal daypack, but we think that’s a small compromise for being able to use one backpack as both your travel bag and your daily explorer. The bag itself consists of 400-denier nylon and polyester fabrics. It feels tough but not as tough as some other bags we’ve tested, such as the Cotopaxi Allpa.

It has fold-away straps, for easier storage. The Peak Design lets you tuck its shoulder and hip straps away when you’re not using them. But unlike any other bag we’ve ever tested, this pack has magnetic flaps on the back panel that open and close with an almost magical snap. Once you’ve played with them, you’ll wonder why every backpack doesn’t have something similar. A small, childish part of me still gets excited about tucking away the straps when I put the Peak Design into an overhead bin. Although the straps are thin, they’re still comfortable. The hip belt isn’t quite as plush as the one on the Tortuga pack; still, even when the Peak Design is fully loaded, the belt doesn’t pinch or dig into the body.

It’s great for carrying expensive gear. If you travel with a camera, you don’t have to use Peak Design’s camera cubes , but they do make carrying that gear a whole lot easier. The cubes come in five sizes. And if they’re situated properly in the bag with the provided clips, they line up with the Travel Backpack’s side-access flaps for quick access. Caleigh Waldman (a photographer for this piece and, full disclosure, my spouse) took this bag across the country for a wedding shoot. “I want this backpack,” she said after three weeks of travel. “I want to travel with it everywhere. With my cameras. Without my cameras. It doesn’t matter. I want to travel with it.”

• It’s expensive—especially if you commit to the entire system of packing and camera cubes.
• More complexity means more things that can break. The adjustable design and multiple zippers do add complexity, and complexity adds potential weaknesses. Peak Design covers all of its bags with a lifetime warranty , which should alleviate most people’s concerns. But if you’re particularly hard on your gear and still need to carry as much as possible, you might consider the Tortuga bag instead.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L

Combines more organization with a simple interior.

This bag’s split interior makes organizing easy. Those who travel for work will appreciate this bag’s dedicated panels for organizing tech, books, papers, and assorted miscellaneous items.

If you travel often for business and prefer a bag that’s much easier to work out of than most of our other picks, you may like the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L . This bag has a front panel and assorted pockets that make it feel like a small traveling office.

It’s built like luggage but organized like your office. Of all the bags we recommend, the MLC (short for Maximum Legal Carry) comes closest to being a suitcase on your back, due to its large size, simple interior, and minimal external features. The MLC is also one of the simplest bags we tested, divided into two leaves (imagine a book with only one page), with a main compartment for packing and a second compartment for document organization and tech storage. The MLC has a built-in laptop compartment that fits 17-inch laptops and is situated close to your back; this protects the computer and keeps its weight closer to your body.

Despite its size, it’s comfortable enough to carry. Most carry-on backpacks of this size, without frames, become somewhat unwieldy when fully packed. Thankfully, the Black Hole MLC bag, like the Cotopaxi Allpa, is a welcome exception to this rule. The MLC has two shoulder straps, a hip belt, and an optional shoulder strap, for easy carrying. When they're not in use, or when you’re checking your bag, all of the straps can be stowed away easily. When fully loaded, the bag was pleasant to carry—not as comfortable as the Peak Design or the Osprey, but decent enough. I wouldn’t want to carry it all day across a city, but I wouldn’t mind carrying it through an airport to a car and to a hotel.

It’s built from high-quality materials, with durability in mind. This pack is made from recycled polyester, and the fabric is woven in a cross-weave that’s very similar to what Patagonia uses in its long-lasting Black Hole series of duffle bags . This is a material I’ve come across a bunch with Patagonia gear, and I’ve tested it thoroughly; it’s very tough. The front of the bag is coated in a weather-resistant TPU, for extra protection from the elements. The bag has large YKK zippers (the industry leader) and smaller YKK zippers throughout. Unlike the Cotopaxi Allpa pack, the Black Hole MLC bag has no security loops.

It comes with one of the best repair programs and a lifetime warranty. Similar to our other picks, the MLC is backed by an excellent lifetime warranty , and we’ve always found that Patagonia’s repair program goes above and beyond other comparable companies.

• We wish the Maximum Legal Carry (despite the name) came in a few more sizes. The 45-liter capacity may be intimidating for some people, and there is no alternative.

Osprey Farpoint 40

For long distances on foot.

A great starter option for one-bag travel, this bag is easy to pack, adaptable to most situations, and sturdy enough to take with you as you travel the world.

Osprey Fairview 40

For long distances and smaller torsos.

A scaled-down version of the Farpoint, this bag has shoulder straps that are slightly lower, to keep the bag’s bulk more aligned with smaller torsos.

Updated in 2023, the Osprey Farpoint 40 and Fairview 40 packs are both built around a hiking backpack frame that’s easy to carry over long distances.

It’s built for travel but designed for hiking. The Farpoint 40 bag is well made, easy to pack, and comfortable to carry over most mid-length distances—such as walking across a city for an afternoon. (For simplicity’s sake, everything we say here about the Farpoint bag also applies to the Fairview bag.) Osprey makes excellent backpacks for hauling around, and its lifetime warranty is renowned within the industry . The Farpoint pack also has an optional messenger bag–style strap, which offers some flexibility when you’re maneuvering tight spaces like subways or crowded city centers.

It’s simple to pack, but not as spacious as it seems. Opening the bag reveals a clamshell design; it’s deep enough to accommodate most large items, yet you won’t have to fumble awkwardly with zippers once it’s time to close up the bag. The feeling you get is not unlike when you’re packing a bit of sturdy luggage, and that’s something we love about bags like this one—especially when you use packing cubes . Osprey says this bag, when fully packed, can carry 40 liters. But after using the Farpoint bag for a few years, we’ve decided that its rounded shape seems to cut into that theoretical packable space more than other bags do. In practice, the Farpoint pack’s available space is closer to—but still less than—that of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

It’s the easiest bag to carry among our picks. Like all Osprey bags, the Farpoint 40 has very comfortable shoulder straps. The years of design and consideration Osprey has put into its hiking backpacks are quite evident in the Farpoint 40. After more than seven years of long-term testing this bag, we’re still surprised by how great it feels to wear when fully packed. Crucially, the straps of the Farpoint 40 stow away neatly behind a zippered panel. However, when you’re using the shoulder straps, the design forces you to also use the hip straps. Though this isn’t a huge issue, if you prefer a sleeker look or would rather have the option of using shoulder straps without hip straps, the Cotopaxi Allpa pack is more flexible, and it lets you hide the waist straps while the bag is on your back.

The Fairview 40 has the same features, in a scaled-down size. The Farpoint 40 and the Fairview 40 packs basically have the same design, but the Fairview pack is made for someone with a more-diminutive torso. It’s also slightly lighter. However, it has the features and durability of the Farpoint bag. It also has the same hip belt and adjustability. On both, the chest-strap clip is also equipped with a small security whistle that’s surprisingly loud. It’s a handy feature for anyone traveling in unfamiliar environments.

• For a smaller carry-on travel backpack, this one has little to not like. However, we do wish Osprey would trade some of the sleeker contours for a little more interior space.

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L

A suitcase to carry on your back.

For dedicated single-bag travelers, this water-resistant, durable bag is easy to pack and to travel with. And it’s comfortable to wear over endless miles—as long as you don’t mind the heavier weight.

The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L maximizes packing space in a bag that’s durable, water-resistant, and customizable to fit most torso lengths (there’s also a 30L version ), with plenty of organizational features to suit any digital nomad.

It’s like a suitcase, with backpack straps. The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L is built to occupy the maximum carry-on space available. It’s a nearly perfect blend of backpack and luggage. On the outside, its tear-resistant sailcloth and sealed zippers provide ample protection from sharp objects and the elements. Opening the main clamshell zipper reveals a cavernous interior and a few organizational features that make the bag a cinch to pack. The front panel is a particular standout, great for keeping track of electronics and chargers. Of all the bags we tested, the Tortuga strikes the closest balance between the carrying comfort of a hiking backpack and the space and organization of a piece of luggage.

It’s as easy to pack as luggage. When it comes to packing, the Tortuga pack has a soothingly minimal interior, as any good suitcase should. In addition to the bag’s cavernous main pocket, its interior lid has a large vented panel. The panel is too narrow to hold additional packing cubes, but it’s great for holding light jackets or doubling as a dirty-laundry bag (if you’re really committed to one-bag travel). The Tortuga is available as a 40-liter pack (the maximum space for a carry-on bag), which we tested; there is also a 30-liter version, which is compliant with some intra-European flights. The more-diminutive version is a decent choice for weekend travel or for minimalist travelers—but for those uses, we prefer the space-saving profile and extra internal organization of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L bag.

It’s very customizable. The Tortuga pack is the most adjustable model we tested, thanks to its adjustable torso length, shoulder straps, and waist-belt system. The adjustable strap system lets you manipulate the location of the shoulder straps (video) to fit a wider variety of body sizes, in both the 30- and 40-liter versions. Of the packs we’ve tested, this one (with its included load-adjuster straps at the top, to prevent the bag’s weight from sagging toward your lumbar region) is the best at distributing its weight (4½ pounds when empty—roughly 1½ pounds more than most of our other picks, except the Peak Design ). The hip straps are removable if you need, but the shoulder straps are not stowable.

• Its straps don’t stow away. Some people, especially those who are hard on their gear, may consider not being able to remove or stow the shoulder straps (as they can with our other picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa ) a disqualifying factor. But after years of testing, traveling with, and occasionally checking our bag, we haven’t had an issue. However, if these mysteries beneath the airport also make you nervous, you might prefer our picks with easy-to-stow straps, such as the Peak Design.
• It's heavy. We’ve fielded complaints from some testers who said that older models of this bag were too heavy for them to carry, even with the padded hip belt and adjustable straps. The additional padding does add weight. At 4½ pounds, this latest Tortuga bag is more than half a pound lighter than it used to be (the difference is noticeable), and it weighs the same as the equally large Peak Design pack. We are currently testing a new, lighter, and less-expensive version of this pack—aptly named the Travel Backpack Lite 40L —and will report back soon.  In the meantime, if you think you would struggle carrying the Tortuga, we strenuously encourage you to consider one of our more-manageable picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L.

If you want to travel like a backpacker but also fit in at a board meeting (and you have the budget for it): Consider the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . This bag’s reputation for durability, adaptability, and a low-key aesthetic make it a favorite among many dedicated one-bag travelers. And after testing it, we think it’s a great bag too. That said, for the bag to really stand out against other backpacks—and to take full advantage of its carrying adaptability—you need to buy the internal frame , the hip belt , and (if you’re traveling with a suit or jacket) the shoulder strap . On a bag that already costs $330, all of this adds up. Everything about the Tom Bihn bag (the fabric, the zippers, the quality of construction) feels like an upgrade from other bags, but it’s simply too pricey, and its design is too rarified and specific for most people. The biggest flaw, from our perspective—apart from the price—is that the Tom Bihn bag lacks a dedicated laptop pocket. In its place, the company sells laptop sleeves (a fine version if you don’t have one) that clip into the bag’s central compartment. Not everyone needs a dedicated laptop pocket, but we prefer the more secure feeling of bags that do.

We’ve narrowed our specifications for a great bag to the following list of features, ordered from most relevant to least:

• Front- or back-panel loader or clamshell opening, for the main compartment: As with any good piece of luggage, with this type of bag, you should be able to open it and see everything you’ve packed. When you have a bag with a panel-loading or clamshell design—rather than a traditional, top-opening design—you can pack and unpack it just as you would a suitcase.

• Backpack strap comfort and design: You never know when you’ll be walking farther with your bag than you’d intended. The more comfortable and well designed the straps are, the easier traveling will be. “Ideally, you want a bag’s shoulder straps to adjust to the angle of your shoulders,” said Eytan Levy of Snarky Nomad. “Good shoulder straps are the difference between an easy trip and a hard trip.”
• Hip-belt comfort and design: A hip belt transfers heavy loads from your back and shoulders onto your hips, letting your legs—not your back—bear the brunt of the weight. Just having a waist belt is a plus, but having a padded and sculpted one—especially on bags with over 40 liters of volume—makes a world of difference.
• Material quality: Durability is critical for any type of luggage, but especially for a backpack that will be your only bag. Most bags worth considering are made of nylon, which resists abrasion more than polyester fabrics of similar density. Spending more, however, can get you exotic, light, and strong materials, such as Dyneema or sailcloth.
• Weight: Once the bags arrived, we weighed each one ourselves. Most of the bags weighed within a few pounds of one another. But unless you’re very strict with yourself, by the time you’re packed for a two-week journey, all bags are going to feel equally massive, even if one is just 2 pounds heavier than another when empty.
• Stowable straps: These are nice to have, but they aren’t absolutely necessary. “The more often you need to check a bag, the more often you need to hide away the straps,” Levy said. “But if the straps are tough enough, it doesn’t matter.”
• Accessory pocket layout and design: Some people will love an accessory pocket that has a specific space for everything; others may find that feature constricting and unadaptable. We prioritized bags with simple designs that guided our packing without constraining us.
• Style: This is purely subjective. We preferred bags that had a minimalist exterior style, but not all of our picks will please everyone. Most of the people we spoke with, however, preferred not to stick out like a tourist wearing a large, colorful backpack, if they could avoid it.

During testing, we flew across the country with these bags, took weekend trips to nearby cities, lived out of them on extended trips, and tried them locally in our daily routines. We also packed and unpacked each bag, using a standardized set of weeklong travel necessities and accessories, to see how well the internal organizational features (or lack thereof) aided or got in the way of efficient packing.

This is not a comprehensive list of all of the carry-on travel backpacks we have tested. We have removed any models that have been discontinued or that no longer meet our criteria.

The Away Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L is a rare miss from the Away team. This bag is resoundingly average for the price. Although it’s made from excellent materials, the bag is let down by its overall design, which lacks any kind of structure or attention to comfort. There are better options.

The cheap, no-frills Cabin Max Metz bag is intriguing for the price. Any bag at this price should almost be considered disposable. That said, if you need a simple bag that costs less than a seat upgrade, this might be the way to go.

The GeniusPack Travel Backpack is the only model we came across that tried to fit a suit into a travel backpack. Though some people might need that, we think those who have to travel with a suit (or clothes that require pressing) would be better off with a piece of carry-on luggage . GeniusPack now offers a second version of this bag, but our conclusion hasn’t changed.

For certain people, the GoRuck GR3 is almost worth the cost. It’s strong and simple and covered by an iron-clad repair guarantee. The removable hip belt is comfortable to wear, and it’s good at displacing the weight of a 45-liter backpack. This is a decent bag. After testing it, however, we weren’t thrilled with the internal Velcro lining for compatible Velcro packing cubes. Velcro isn’t great: It wears out, it’s difficult to keep clean, and it clings to dirt. That might seem like a small thing, but for the price, this bag should feel perfect.

The Minaal Carry-On 2.0 was designed to be a backpack for business people. But if you’re carrying it for business, you’re probably wearing at least a blazer, so you wouldn’t use a backpack in any case. If you’re a business traveler who falls more on the casual end of the business-casual spectrum, and you’re not on a budget, this is a well-thought-out pack. But we think our picks are more versatile for world travel, and they come at a better price. Minaal has since introduced a 3.0 version of this bag ; our thoughts about it remain the same.

The Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L is a slightly larger sibling of the Farpoint pack. The Sojourn Porter bag is about 2 inches longer, and it pushes right up to most airline limits. If you don’t mind possibly having to check your bag at the last minute, this would be an excellent alternative to the Farpoint pack.

I’ve tested dozens of bags, but the Calpak Terra 26L Laptop Duffel Backpack has stolen my heart. Its clamshell opening makes it easy to pack for week-long trips or a quick day away, and its many pockets allow me to stow dozens of gadgets and gizmos the way I prefer: separately. 

Its padded straps prevent aches while I’m standing for hours in a Border Customs line, and I appreciate that it minimizes the physical impact of my overpacking. A compression sleeve helps with underseat storage, even when I think I can’t possibly fit it under the airline seat in front of me. It’s now my go-to personal item, and I always get complimented on the stunning icy blue color. And did I mention it’s water resistant? It’s been soaked in the rain and still protected my books, sketchbooks, and other precious, fragile items.

Similarly, I’ve often opted for this convertible backpack for big trips, as it functions as a backpack or a duffel. Years in, I still reach for my Away Carry-On for most trips, and this backpack from the brand’s outdoor line embodies its same resilience and style. The water- and abrasion-resistant fabric is lightweight and has a sheen that’s oddly beautiful.

Although the design is meant to be protective, there isn’t as much structure in this backpack as in others. Despite its many pockets, organizers, and included compression straps, the 25-liter bag feels more flexible, which will appeal to shoppers seeking a lightweight and unobtrusive backpack. It packs flat, and it’s the most comfortable one I’ve tried.

Yeti is not just for coolers and water bottles. Like the rest of the brand’s offerings , this everyday backpack is simple yet solid. It’s inspired by motorcycle gear, so it’s meant for rough-and-tumble use — and yes, it fits your tumblers, too. Multiple access points make it easy to get to any supplies right away, with a full-zip ability that lets the bag go wide.

PEOPLE shopping editor Kayla Kitts has brought this Yeti backpack on many adventures “from local festivals and park days to weekend trips and air travel." She loves that the exterior is incredibly durable and easy to wipe down, and the interior is packed with a slew of organizational features and compartments.

Samsonite earns our top spot for the best luggage brand because it has a wide assortment for every preference — from business travelers to vacationers — and has continuously proven to be high quality as we've tested it over the years.

In particular, it stands out for its durability and ease-of-use features: There's been no struggling to open and close the cases, and packing them has been a breeze , thanks to the functional compartments that maximize space. It's certainly not inexpensive, but as direct-to-consumer luggage brand prices have skyrocketed, Samsonite's have remained fairly consistent.

Both hardside and softside styles from the brand have excelled in our tests. We've also been impressed by each of the sizes, including carry-ons, checked bags and underseat luggage. Some of our favorite models include the Freeform hardside (pictured here), the Solyte DLX softside and the Stryde Glyder , which is a checked case that's wide instead of tall so it's less likely to tip over.

American Tourister

If you're on a budget or you don’t use luggage regularly — i.e., it doesn’t need to be the most durable and you don’t need all the bells and whistles — American Tourister offers competitive pricing and an excellent variety to choose from . There are a lot of options if you prefer bright colors and fun prints, plus there are cases for the entire family, including a Disney collection . Between the designs and versatile offerings, the models are fun, functional and especially ideal for vacationers.

Just note that while luxury hardside cases are usually made of polycarbonate, American Tourister typically uses ABS plastic, which is more affordable but more prone to scratches. Still, it gets high ratings from online reviewers who note that the bags are surprisingly spacious. Another perk: The brand offers luggage sets for an even better value, especially if you need to purchase multiple pieces. Pictured here is the Pop Max Softside set , which at $150 for a set of three, is less than other single cases.

Away is one of the most popular luggage brands on the market, and our testing shows it actually lives up to its hype. Though the brand has a wide range of offerings, we especially love the hardside carry-on.

It's made of 100% polycarbonate that proved to be durable and lightweight in our evaluations — even lighter than some fabric bags we’ve tested. It was also surprisingly spacious and held a full packing load in our review. The company offers a 100-day return policy on unused items; it also offers a lifetime limited warranty on its suitcases that covers any "functional damage."

Besides the main Carry-On model , it comes in variations like a Bigger Carry-On (which the brand says can hold 20% more) and a Carry-On Flex (which has an expandable zipper). We also love the brand's Everywhere Bag , which is a stylish and surprisingly spacious weekender.

Briggs & Riley

Briggs & Riley bags are pricey — a carry-on can cost over $600 — but they come with a lifetime guarantee that will cover all repairs if the luggage ever gets broken or damaged. They also come with innovative features, such as the brand's signature compression packing system. Bags that have this feature expand to let you pack and then compress down after they're filled. In fact, one of our testers said she packed a week's worth of summer clothes for two people into a compact carry-on, and it easily fit into an airline's overhead bin.

The suitcases also use top-notch construction and timeless designs in a range of styles, including hardside, softside, carry-ons and checked bags. The Baseline Global Carry-On Spinner (pictured here in the 21-inch version) has been a selected as GH Family Travel Award winner for the past two years after travel testers gave it perfect scores across the board. Its nylon fabric also aced our Lab's abrasion tests.

Amazon Basics

It’s hard to find good luggage for under $100, but Amazon’s luggage does not disappoint. There are softside and hardside styles to choose from, plus garment bags , duffels and more. Amazon also boasts extensive testing to make sure their products will hold up, and though the luggage might not the absolute best quality out there, the price can’t be beat.

We were impressed with its hardside 20-inch spinner carry-on (pictured here) when we tested it on our Lab. Our analysts found it to be exceptionally easy to pack, though the ABS material wasn't as scratch-resistant as other models in our tests. Still, consumer testers liked the maneuverability and wheel performance. This style also comes in two other sizes (24 and 28 inches) and can be purchased as a two- or three-piece set.

This luxury brand is on the pricey side but has timeless designs — from hardside to tweed fabric — that never go out of style. In fact, the brand’s marketing and aesthetics are focused heavily on its heritage. It has been a top performer in our tests, thanks to its spacious interior that's easy to pack and its wheels and handles that make it smooth and comfortable to maneuver.

The hardside cases have earned high scores in our tests — especially standing out for being scratch-resistant, lightweight and spacious — but we also love the softside Legend collection (pictured here), which is made of durable tweed fabric and leather trim.

This fashionable yet functional travel brand was founded by actress Shay Mitchell and incorporates smart features designed to make traveling easier. It also has a stunning aesthetic, including monochromatic color schemes in which the handles and hardware match the case.

Pictured here is the Carry-On Roller, its best-selling case that comes in a range of neutral and fun hues. It was spacious for packing and easy to maneuver in our tests, and though it did scuff during use, it resisted dents well during our Lab's drop tests. Another popular style is its Mini Weekender , which can be used as a personal item that fits underneath the airplane seat in front of you.

This company was founded by a pilot, and it makes luggage specifically for airline personnel who travel for a living. Still, it's just as functional for business and leisure travelers.

The brand primarily sells softside luggage, though it does have some hardside options available. There’s excellent attention to detail that makes frequent flying easier, like cushioning around the handles for comfort, self-aligning wheels that let you roll the luggage in any direction and abrasion-resistant nylon fabric.

The Platinum Elite softside luggage (pictured here) stood out in our Lab tests. Not only was it durable, but it was also spacious enough to hold our entire load with room to spare. The downside was that it was heavier than others, but it's a fair tradeoff for the top-of-the-line features.

This brand increases the fun factor and makes it easier to spot your luggage in a sea of solid colors. There are adorable animal sets for kids' luggage , animal prints for adults and more. There are also options for licensed teams and art (like Britto, shown here), making your suitcase a playful yet functional accessory.

When it comes to materials, most Heys suitcases are hardside and made of polycarbonate and ABS composite. This means it's mostly ABS plastic but has a polycarbonate coating on the outside for added protection. The brand wasn't the most durable in our tests, it but earned high ease-of-use scores.

Style is certainly important when it comes to luggage — it's an accessory, after all — but you don't want to sacrifice quality and functionality. Calpak's cases are both well-made and have unique designs. Though its assortment is tailored with fewer models than some of the big brands, Calpak still has a wide range of materials to choose from, including sleek hardside polycarbonate, printed ABS/polycarbonate blends and ripstop polyester.

Calpak's Ambeur carry-on (pictured here) was one of our testers' favorites; they especially loved the easy-to-use telescopic handle and metallic color. We also found it to be easy to pack and though it wasn't as scratch-resistant as some others we tested (which is expected for ABS composites), it still withstood dents and damage from our durability drop test.
