14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

best travel tour companies for seniors

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Tour Companies For Seniors

Article Contents

Does entering the golden years of life mean slowing down in everything for seniors? Absolutely not! In fact, it is THE perfect time to explore America in style.

Whether it’s a relaxing getaway for the weekend or a month-long trip, the perks of traveling are unquestionable for all ages. Your options and opportunities are endless — from cities to countries, or even the whole world is all there to explore.

Here are the travel tour companies for seniors to look into. With their expertise and diverse travel packages, your next adventure awaits.

Why choose senior travel companies for tourism?

The answer is simple. It’s because life is too short for you to have an average vacation, and opting for travel companies for your world adventure is like upgrading your travel game from an economy flight to a first-class private jet.

With their knowledge and expertise, these tour companies understand and meet the unique needs of experienced travelers.

  • Comfort: Whether you want a roomier seat, top-notch accommodations, or an itinerary that’s more pampering than your favorite spa day – sit back and leave it up to your travel companies. These companies will be rolling out the red travel carpet for you.
  • Itinerary: It’s the secret sauce of senior tour groups. For seniors, traveling isn’t just about ticking off destinations from a bucket list; it’s about savoring every moment at a pace that won’t leave you breathless. And such travel companies have the inside scoop on traveling knowledge to tailor experiences that cater to your taste and personality.
  • Logistics: Forget the stress of planning logistics because these tour companies are the maestros of the organization. They handle the nitty-gritty details while you focus on relishing the beauty of a new city, the flavors of new landscapes, or the tranquility of a remote beach: no pressure, no fuss – just pure, absolute enjoyment.
  • Travel group: Who you travel with matters! Senior tour companies introduce you to groups of travelers who are like-minded adventurers and share your zest for life. Whether you’re sharing stories over a gourmet meal or laughing your way through a scenic route, you get the company of friends who understand you.

How do you choose the best tour company for seniors?

Here are some quick tips on how you can choose your desired tour companies that ensure quality adventures for you:

Tailored experiences for senior travel

Choose companies that specialize in senior travel. Seek those magical words like “senior-friendly itineraries” or “customized experiences,” fulfilling the unique needs and desires of seasoned travelers and ensuring every moment is tailored to perfection.

Comfort and accessibility

Try to opt for a tour company specializing in an overall ambiance that screams relaxation like cushy accommodations and spacious transport. After all, it’s a vacation where you can enjoy and savor the luxury you’ve earned.

Supportive and expert guides

A tour guide can make or break your experience. Seek out companies that boast knowledgeable guides, those local wizards who can unravel the secrets of a destination while ensuring you’re not left behind in the dust.

Reviews and recommendations

Let fellow travelers be your compass. Check reviews and testimonials for the company’s reliability and customer service from other seniors who have ventured with the company.

Flexibility and pace

Look for companies that value and offer flexibility in the itinerary, allowing for leisurely exploration and optional excursions. A good tour company knows it’s not about rushing but savoring.

Safety measures first

Ensure the company prioritizes safety with measures like well-maintained vehicles, clear communication, and knowledgeable staff because safety is the foundation of carefree adventure.

Transparent pricing

Look for a tour company that provides transparent pricing, outlining what is included and what may incur additional charges. Hidden costs put a brake on your travel mood.

Group dynamics

Great companions can turn an average trip into unforgettable. Opt for companies that attract like-minded individuals for a more enjoyable social experience for you.

The best tour companies for seniors

We talked to them about popular destinations in 2024 and their tips for seeing the world..

Active Americans ages 50 and over are the primary market for Overseas Adventure Travel. All its tours have an activity rating that ranks tours from one (easy) to five (strenuous) to help travelers find the right fit.

“When you’re traveling, opportunities are offered to step out of your comfort zone. You might think you’re too old. But you’re not!” says Matt Berna, a president at Intrepid Travel, a world leader in global travel. “We discovered that the things that seemed initially the scariest turned out to be the most thrilling, the most exciting, the most enlivening. So go for it.”

We heard a slew of variations on the Nike JDI slogan when we spoke with travel industry experts about senior travel: Just do it!

In some ways, traveling can become easier with age. Seniors, often retired or semi-retired, have more flexibility. They can travel off-season when prices are lower and popular destinations are less busy. They can travel longer, as there’s no need to cram it into a one- or two-week vacation. And often, they have more money to spend on travel.

So, what are you waiting for? Here are three top companies, specializing in small-group travel. We talked to them about popular destinations in 2024, and their tips for traveling seniors.

Love to learn? Road Scholar, a nonprofit organization, is arguably the world leader in educational travel for seniors. Founded as Elderhostel in 1975, the organization offers learning adventures, hosted by expert faculty, in nearly 100 countries abroad and throughout the United States.

This longstanding company offers some 1,150 tours, focusing on local culture, and led by local experts. Globally, 51 percent of their bookings in September 2023 were from the over-50 crowd, and they see their senior bookings trending up. The average group size is 10.

“Smaller groups provide the ideal balance of being able to travel independently, while also having ready-made travel companions to share the experience with,” says Berna. “We’ve found that it’s not only about the sights you see but the people you meet along the way, the friendships you make.”

The company is also seeing a rise in solo travel. “We’ve seen a shift within the travel industry where solo vacations are experiencing unprecedented growth, and it’s the senior set leading the charge,” says Berna. “Many seniors are not waiting around for friends and family and are choosing to go on their own.”

In North America, 75 percent of Intrepid solo travelers are women, and 64 percent are over age 50.

You can feel good about booking an Intrepid trip, too. Globally recognized for its commitment to ethical and sustainable travel, they became the world’s largest travel company to achieve B-Corp certification in 2018, given to businesses that meet certain social and environmental standards. Intrepid Travel is also the first tour operator with near-term science-based climate targets through the Science Based Targets Initiative, and its not-for-profit, The Intrepid Foundation , has raised more than $13 million for more than 135 partners.

Popular destinations for seniors in 2024: Africa, Australia, and Asia. US seniors traveling solo are heading to Southeast Asia, Central America, Turkey, India, and Nepal.

Here’s a tip: Consider more frequent, closer-to-home trips. “You might want to budget for several cheaper long weekend excursions versus one longer expensive vacation,” says Berna. Also check out their Best Tours for Seniors and 7 of the Best Destinations for Solo Travellers Over 50 .

Overseas Adventure Travel offers more than 65 “soft adventure” trips, conducted by local English-speaking experts, and designed to showcase local culture and make connections with local people.

Overseas Adventure Travel

This company is part of the Grand Circle Corporation, established in 1958 to exclusively serve members of the American Association of Retired Persons. They’ve been dedicated to senior and solo travelers, specializing in small group trips, with no more than 16 people on land trips and 25 on their small boat cruises. Active Americans ages 50 and over are their primary market, but all its tours have an activity rating that ranks tours from one (easy) to five (strenuous) to help travelers find the right fit.

More than 65 “soft adventure” trips are offered on all continents, conducted by local English-speaking experts, and designed to showcase local culture and make connections with local people. For example, you might share a meal on a hosted visit with a local family or visit a local school.

OAT is a leader in solo travel; more than half of their customers are solo travelers, and they offer some of the best rates in the industry, with free or low-cost single supplements. In fact, 92 percent of their single spaces are available without an additional single supplement cost, and the remaining eight percent have some of the lowest single supplement costs in the industry.

Popular destinations for seniors in 2024: Egypt and the Nile, Sicily, Japan, Morocco, Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and the Chilean fjords, and the Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe safari.

Here’s a tip: Learn a bit of the local language. “Making friends (and just getting around) will be much easier,” says Harriet Lewis, chair. “Even if you mangle every word, it’s a great icebreaker and most people will genuinely appreciate your effort.” Also, check out their 101+ Tips for Solo Women Travelers , which are applicable to all traveling seniors.

In 2024, Road Scholar will offer 683 itineraries.

Road Scholar

Love to learn? Road Scholar, a nonprofit organization, is arguably the world leader in educational travel for seniors. Founded as Elderhostel in 1975, the organization offers learning adventures, hosted by expert faculty, in nearly 100 countries abroad and throughout the United States. In 2024, the organization will offer 683 program itineraries.

Group size is small, an average of 21 people, encouraging social connections. “Every day, we hear how much our participants enjoy taking part in lively discussions and getting to know their fellow travelers,” says Matt Faucher, senior director of participant experience. “Countless Road Scholar participants have walked away with new lifelong friends, many of whom also become travel companions on future trips.”

Road Scholar offers programs for all levels of mobility. You can filter the thousands of programs they offer by activity level to find the right fit for you.

Between 25 to 30 percent of Road Scholar travelers are solo travelers, and 85 percent of those solos are women. “Solo travel is on the rise among seniors,” says Faucher. “Road Scholar offers ample opportunities for traveling solo, but with a group, which can be particularly valuable for seniors.” Faucher says, more than half of their solo travelers are married but travel without their spouse.

Most popular destinations for 2024: In North America, Arizona, California, Florida, New York, and Georgia, lead the list. Popular international destinations include Italy, Costa Rica, France, Mexico, and Egypt.

Here’s a tip: “Be honest with yourself about your physical abilities and familiarize yourself with the physical demands of the destination you’re visiting,” says Faucher. “We remind our participants at various points before and after enrolling to familiarize themselves with the physical demands of their programs so that they can be sure it’s a good fit for them and they can prepare accordingly. It’s no fun for you or the group if you’re on a program that feels too difficult or not challenging enough.”

The perks of traveling as a senior with Intrepid

A group of older people enjoying a cooking class in Thailand

Authentic experiences with a local leader

Say goodbye to stuffy coaches and hello to leader-led, culturally rich experiences that’ll take you off the road and behind the scenes of your favorite destinations. Whether you’re picnicking at the ruins of Volubilis in Morocco , spotting the Amazon Jungle’s fascinating wildlife or discovering the many ancient temples in Sri Lanka , rest assured you’re getting the most out of every place you visit with a local expert by your side.

A group of people standing on the steps of a cathedral in Cusco, Peru

Small groups full of unexpected friends

We’ve found that it’s not always about the sights you see but the people you meet along the way - even if they’re born into different generations. The average group size on our tours is 10, so get ready to bond over shared experiences and a like-minded sense of purpose with people of all ages from all around the world. With a little luck, the friendships you make on this trip will last long after you’ve caught your flight home.

A tram sitting at a stop in Hiroshima, Japan

Safety, logistics and convenience

Traveling in a new country can be daunting at any age and while we’re sure you can handle any situation, knowing you don’t have to lift an organizational finger or think about every little itinerary detail makes the world of difference. Sit back while your leader manages language barriers, facilitates border crossings and advises you of any cultural do’s and don’t’s. That way, you can spend less time worrying about the logistics and more time enjoying your priceless time off.

Pick your own style of adventure

Whether you’re 28 or 64, we understand everyone wants something a little different out of their trip. That’s why we’ve created a range of adventures to suit every Intrepid traveler. From our Basix style of simple accommodation and plenty of free time to our Premium range featuring comfortable transportation and exclusive experiences (with our original and comfort styles in between), choose the style and theme that suits you best and get ready for the trip of a lifetime.

Recent tour reviews, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Travel: The Top 5 Tour Companies That Work with Seniors

8/14/2019 | By Seniors Guide Staff

Senior Traveling with one of the Tour Companies That Work with Seniors

“When people ask me why I still have hope and energy after all these years, I always say: Because I travel.” – Gloria Steinem

Steinem’s support of travel’s benefits is backed by science. Geriatrician Dr. David Lipschitz claims that travel helps seniors live longer by keeping us occupied and engaged and encouraging us to exercise. Today, we seniors have more disposable income and can devote more time and money to travel than ever before. And, as you’ll find when you travel, the world is full of senior travelers. The average age of U.S. travelers is 45, and well over a third of travelers are over 55. Senior travel can be budget-friendly, too. One of the benefits of being a senior with a touch of wanderlust is that, unlike younger travelers tied to jobs and kids’ schedules, we can travel outside of peak vacation times – summer, Christmas, and spring break, meaning cheaper rates.

What should you look for when choosing among the tour companies that work with seniors? Many companies support senior travelers by organizing itineraries with a leisurely pace and offer flexible tour and travel options. Look for companies that have low- or no-charge single supplement fees for solo travelers. Here are a few of the best travel companies for seniors.

1. Road Scholar: If you want to learn something new

Road Scholar , formerly called Elderhostel, is a not-for-profit travel company founded in 1975. They specialize in “Learning Adventures” for adults, and most of their customers are over 50. Each trip is rated, from “Easy Going” to “Challenging.” Roads Scholar understands that many seniors are traveling solo, so they provide options so you can avoid the extra costs that single travelers often pay. They offer to match you with a roommate for your trip or require only a small single supplement. Some programs offer single rooms at no extra charge. You can also share the adventure with a grandchild on one of their Grandparent learning adventures.

2. Overseas Adventure Travel: If you want to customize your trip or if you’re traveling solo

Overseas Adventure Travel offers trips to over 90 countries and to every continent (yes, even Antarctica). They specialize in small group travel, from 8-16 people in each tour group, with an average tour size of 14. Most of their customers are over 50. Their travel options are very flexible and customizable; 85% of their travelers customize their trip. They offer pre- and post-trip add-ons and extensions, allow you to combine trips, and let you customize your air travel.

O.A.T. is also solo-traveler friendly, offering free single supplements on all land-based trips (you might have to pay a small supplement on their small-ship cruises). They also offer women-only small group and small ship tours.

3. Adventures Abroad: If you want an adventure

Adventures Abroad offers small-group tours – no more than 18 travelers in a tour, designed for adults. Their Senior Travel Tours are specially designed for adults aged 50 and up. These tours blend major sightseeing destinations with “off-the-beaten-path” destinations, and focus on cultural immersion. These trips also include built-in leisure time. They take travelers’ activity preferences into account when they rank their tours by physical activity level (1 being the least physical and 3 being the most strenuous).

4. Viking Cruises: Among the most culture-heavy tour companies that work with seniors

Cruises are a convenient, relaxed way to travel. Viking is a popular cruise line – and one of the best tour companies that work with seniors; it operates many itineraries in Europe and Asia. Viking also runs ocean cruises, and all of its ships are adult only (18 years and up). Viking cruises focus on cultural and learning experiences, offering opportunities like on-ship cooking classes, planetariums, and TED talks.

5. Projects Abroad: If you want to volunteer

For seniors who want to share their knowledge and skills and make a difference in the world, ProjectsAbroad’s “Grown-up Specials” program designs volunteer trip packages specifically for adults over 50. This is among the best volunteer-based tour companies that work with seniors. The trips start at 2 weeks long, and the company organizes the itineraries and accommodations (often with a host family). The company offers volunteering trips all over the world, from environmental work in the Galapagos to childcare in Nepal.

Best Guided Tour Operators For Older Travellers And Seniors

Top escorted tour operators for older travellers, group tours for senior citizens, & top travel agents for older travellers.

Back when we were in university, we noticed certain tour operators focused on younger travellers for exciting party tours to exotic destinations for activities such as skiing in Banff, Alberta or lounging on the beach in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Tina even took a bus tour down to Florida.

It is nice to know that some group tour operators also focus on older travellers with destinations and activities that are tailored to our preferences and limitations. They are recognizing that a high percentage of global travel expenditures are made by people aged 50 and older. Older travellers are living longer, healthy lives and are more affluent than younger travellers with more free time to travel.

Some tour operators and group tours go so far as to exclude guests under a certain age.

Of course, some types of vacation, such as cruising, are very popular with older travellers, especially during low season. Cruises inherently meet the wants and needs of older travellers and are a great way to travel to multiple countries with convenience and luxury.

However, these tour operators have great itineraries and include features that allow older travellers to experience the things and places they love at the right pace for them, all while making new friends in their own age group.

Choosing A Tour Operator

Travel companies catering to older travellers and senior citizens focus on comfort and usually are not cheap. You will probably spend $200-$300 per day (not including flights). They usually use large, comfortable buses and higher-end hotels. The cost of some meals and attractions will be included in the price. The tour Itineraries often grab your interest with in-depth cultural activities or slower-paced beautiful outdoor activities.

It is very nice to be taken to the best tourist attractions in each city and often skip the lineup or even possibly save a bit of money compared to doing it yourself. Avoiding the time, stress and aggravation involved with researching and booking all of the accommodations, transportation, and attractions is well worth the cost.

The benefit of an escorted tour that is hard to quantify or compare is the quality of your tour guide. Read reviews to find out which tour operators have the most knowledgeable and helpful tour hosts.

We have categorized the tour operators below depending on your needs and interests to help you select the tour company that is right for you.

Road Scholar

Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) provides over 5,500 learning adventures in 150 countries designed for travelers aged 50 and older. One of their goals as a non-profit organization is to keep their trips affordable to encourage life-long learning.

They have been doing it since 1975. Like many others, we love the idea of keeping our minds sharp as we age.

Tours are have themes based on interests such as music, art, and bird watching as well as by destination and physical activity level. They offer programs in the USA, but also in exotic places like Egypt, Nepal, and Fiji.

Accommodations and meals are not luxurious, but instead are in student residence halls, underused hostels, or standard motels and hotels.

Tours For Active Older Travellers

We hope that we will be lucky enough to be in good-enough physical condition and have enough energy to participate in athletic and more physically strenuous travel activities that will exercise our bodies as well as our minds. Sometimes the most spectacular and unique sights and places are off-the-beaten-path so they are hard to access.

Adventures Abroad

Adventures Abroad specializes in group tours with 18 participants or less and will take you hiking or on other adventurous excursions in bucket-list, exotic destinations like Costa Rica.

Tour Operators Specializing In Travel For People With Mobility Issues

Some tour operators for older travellers can accommodate guests with limited mobility, others might have itineraries that involve lots of walking where wheelchair or walker access is not possible (such as places with steep inclines or on unpaved or cobblestone walkways). Thus, you should do your research before booking if you have a mobility impairment.

There are also many travel agents that specialize in booking accessible travel activities, transportation and accommodations for mobility impaired travellers, but there are too many to list in this article.

Access Tours is a non-profit organization providing wheelchair accessible package vacation tours in the American West.

They cater to people with physical disabilities, especially slow walkers and scooter or wheelchair users, along with those who would normally accompany them.

They don’t offer their own guided tours, but specialize on custom travel itineraries for people with complex health needs, including deaf, blind, mobility impaired, and developmental challenges.

Tour Companies That Specialize In Solo Travel For Older Travellers

Being single should not stop us from travelling. Some of us never married or have lost our significant other and some people just love to meet new people when they travel.

Traveling alone can be quite difficult and sometimes unsafe, especially if you’re a senior citizen.

Normally the online prices for a tour, cruise, or all-inclusive vacation represent a per-person, double occupancy price. if you are traveling alone, you must pay a higher price, called the “single supplement”, which can increase the cost by 50% or more.

Several tour operators realize that many seniors are solo travelers and offer “single-friendly” trips, cruises, and group tours with a no-cost or low-cost single supplement. Other tour companies will give you an opportunity to be matched with a roommate of the same sex and smoking preference as a way to avoid the single supplement.

EF Go Ahead Tours

EF Go Ahead Tours is a 35-year old Canadian company that offers guided tours across all 7 continents. They also offer many food and wine tours.

They welcome solo travelers on their popular solo tours where you can meet like-minded single adventurers.  They also have smaller group sizes (maximum 35 people) for a more intimate experience. They also have escorted tours by train, cruise and even walking tours.

The “EF” in their name stands for “Education First”, so they could have also been listed in the Educational category above.

Singles Travel International

Singles Travel International has trips and cruises for all age ranges, but they also offer cruises specifically for singles aged 50 and older several times a year.

You can choose a room sharing option or a more expensive private room. People who smoke, snore, or use a CPAP machine may have to pay for a higher-cost single room if a roommate cannot be found.

Solos Holidays

Solos Holidays offers international trips for singles in three age categories: over 30, over 40, and over 50.

This company is based in the UK, so trips depart from London and are priced in British pounds.

On their tours, you can enjoy single rooms and private facilities without a single supplement.

Tauck World Discovery

Tauck World Discovery is a luxury tour operator that offers group tours that consist of combinations of, motorcoach tours, rail tours, and riverboat and small ship cruises.

Tauck reduces or eliminates its single supplement on select itineraries. Check their website for a list.

We hope you can use the information above to find a tour operator or travel agent that will help you take worry-free dream vacations in comfort and style while making lifelong friendships with other older travellers and seniors.

If you have used any other great tour operators that cater to senior citizens and older travellers, please let us know in the comments below.

What a fab post! My grandparents love these kinds of holidays as it’s the only way they can have a holiday now.

Several of the tour operators are based in the UK and specialize in Europe (departing from London and other major cities). I’d love to hear about their experiences on tours like this as we are just starting to get to the point where we want to go on guided/escorted tours for a slower pace, less hassle, and to travel with older travellers like us and seniors with similar interests.

' src=

We`re all aging, so travel should be adapted to our new standards. The Assisted Villas in the Caribbean allows the elderly and persons with disability to enjoy a Caribbean trip with personalized care, something never seen before. Glad to see this list show we got even more support.

I am happy to share this information for the older travellers that might be travelling to the Dominican Republic on a tour or just on their own itinerary.

My wife and i are seniors like to travel to spain and portugal. We have a little mobility issues and like to have toilets in the tour buses can you help us please thanks

Most of these tour operators will have toilets in their tour buses (perhaps some buses that are only used for sightseeing in one city might not).

' src=

I didn’t realize there were so many tours and companies which cater to the older population. That’s a good thing to note not only for older travelers but for travelers who are young now (like myself) and will continue to traveler later on in life.

Some of these tour operators limit tours to people over a certain age, but most do not, so if you love slow travel and stress-free escorted tours, you can still go.

Molly @ Transatlantic Notes

I think I’d enjoy some travel like this. I don’t quite yet qualify as a senior traveller, and hadn’t considered there were so many that specialised in this area. Very informative!

We are glad you found the article informative. Most of these companies do not exclude younger travellers (although a few only book for people age 40 and over), so you can still enjoy a luxurious, worry-free escorted tour to a dream travel destination.

' src=

This is a very comprehensive guide for seniors who love organised trips. I have to admiy I fall into the seniors group but have done only a few organised trips. I therefore am glad that you have included companies that specialise or have availability for singles and solo travellers like me. Good to see you cover many parts of the world. I’m keeping this for future use as it would be really useful for me.

We have not really done an escorted tour with one of these tour operators, but we will start soon and do it often in the future. I like how people of different activity levels can find an seniors guided tour that is right for them and solo travellers can meet others while they travel and save on the single supplement fee. I hope this article helps you in the future.

Jack (Nomad Tactics)

Before reading this I have no idea there are so many service catering to older travellers. Unlike young people like me who have no money, you guys have way more option when it comes to travel.

Older travellers definitely have different travel preferences. Less exploring and more disposable money, so guided tours with escorted tour operators are ideal.

That is such a fab list. I would love to go on to any of such leisure tours. Though it is a bit long shot for me to get into seniors bracket, it would be lovely to get on these tours some day. I especially agree with your statement on the elderly having money & time to enjoy these tours. Thanks for sharing.

Rupali https://momkidlife.com

Thanks, Rupali. We also want to go on many of these luxurious escorted tours from these tour operators that cater to older travellers and seniors. You don’t have to be a senior to go on these tours, you just have to want to travel like a senior.

The Healthcare Hustle

I am really glad you chose to write about this. Whenever we are traveling with grandparents, finding ways to accommodate them can be a struggle but we still want to share these special moments with them. This is so important!

These tour operators actually encourage the older travellers to bring their kids or grandkids so everyone can enjoy the escorted tour together.

' src=

Wonderful information! I’m going to check into these companies. This takes the stress from new travelers. I want to travel with my mother who is a senior and this shows me that there are travel agencies that cater to this generation. Thanks for sharing!

These tour companies encourage their older clients to bring their kids and grandkids along, so you’ll fit right in. Have fun.

Blogging Generation

An insightful blog which is super helpful for elders! The tips mentioned are quite perfect and easy to understand as well as navigate. Thanks for sharing and helping a lot.

We appreciate that. We want our articles to be helpful and easy to read. This one should help readers choose the right escorted tour operator for seniors and older travellers.

' src=

I am truly keen on reading this web site’s posts to be updated regularly. It includes nice information.

' src=

These are is a really good tips. Simple but very accurate information. Thanks for sharing this must-read article for older travellers.

Quite a compprehensive list of all the tour operators around for us oldies. I have only been on a few tours, usually just for a day, but as your article says they are often good value for the experience they offer. Nice to see you have include operators that cater for single older people as well – I defo fall into that category.

We’re the same. Up until now, we might go on a city bus tour or an excursion in a cruise port of call. We can’t wait to try some escorted tours from the tour operators in this article, especially those the cater to older travellers and seniors.

What great information for the older travel population. There doesnt seem to be much info on this topic around the internet, great job!

This article quickly made it to page 1 on google search for related search terms such as tours for older travellers or guided tours for seniors. I hope it has useful information because older people have more time and money to go on escorted tours like these.

' src=

Mitch VeryTastyWorld

Thanks for sharing this comprehensive listing for older travellers. It’s especially useful as you have covered operators in a number of different countries, for trips all over the world as well as different styles of travel.

Some tour operators focus or specialize in certain countries (especially those doing niche guided tours such as for the physically challenged), but the big ones try to do them all.

' src=

Thank you for compiling the information and posting! I am definitely going to share with my mom who is retired. She will greatly benefit from this info.

It’s nice to have the list of tour operators for senior citizens and older travellers in one place and to be able to see what niches they focus on.

' src=

Awesome topic. My parents usually book stuff on their own, but great resource for seniors who want to travel.

We have booked most of our own travel, which we find fun (especially doing the research), but I know that as we age we will want less headaches and stress and these tour operators look like a good option.

' src=

Wow, incredible blog format! You make running a blog look easy. The look of your web site is wonderful, as well as the content

Thanks. We’ve been blogging for 2 years now and enjoy it so far. It will be better once we can travel again.

Very helpful piece of writing and nice recommendations. I am really enjoying by these.

What people love about North America Tours for Seniors

Most Amazing Family Vacation Ever! The 7-day private tour of the Southwest National Parks (hotel version) Hard to put into words but this was the perfect way for our family to experience the dramatic sites and cultural experiences of the southwest National Parks! We had the most amazing tour guide (Thanks Marie!) and the agenda was the right balance of keeping us engaged while covering so much ground. Each National Park had its own unique and wonderful qualities and this 7-day tour gave us just enough time to soak up the natural beauty. Also, there are hikes and tours for all ages (we let the boys take on the more difficult hikes while Mom and Dad took the more accessible routes. The pick up and drop off in Las Vegas was very convenient and allowed us just enough time to enjoy a few nights in Las Vegas. Would HIGHLY recommend!
We real enjoyed our time away.
The 7-day Southwest Highlights tour was amazing! Alex and Amber were terrific guides that helped to give us options to make the most of our time at each tour stop. They also took care of setting up camp most days and prepared great meals throughout the trip. The trip was well organized, and we stopped often during the drive. I recommend this tour to people who want an active vacation, checking a number of National Parks off their list, but don't want to do all of the research needed to make it happen.

From captivating cultural encounters to picturesque landscapes that soothe the soul, these trips are thoughtfully designed to cater to the needs and desires of a variety of travelers.

Let’s delve into the transformative power of unhurried travel, where the emphasis lies not on ticking off landmarks on a checklist but on relishing each intricate moment of life. Slow-paced tours can rekindle the sense of wonder, create lasting memories, and open doors to unforeseen adventures for seniors seeking a new chapter in their travel story.

Why Choose a Slow-Paced Tour

While fast-paced travel might suit some, unhurried trips offer a host of unique advantages that make them an increasingly popular choice among those that enjoy stopping and smelling the roses.

Appreciate the Journey

Slow-paced tours encourage you to savor the experience fully. Rather than rushing from one attraction to another, you have the time to absorb the culture, history, and beauty of each destination. This unhurried approach allows you to develop a deeper connection with the places you visit, fostering a profound sense of appreciation for the voyage itself.

Enjoy Relaxed Itineraries

Slow-paced tours are thoughtfully designed with leisurely itineraries that prioritize comfort and enjoyment over rushed sightseeing. Ample free time allows you to explore destinations at your own pace, take breaks when needed, and even indulge in spontaneous moments of discovery.

Embrace Accessibility and Inclusivity

These tours often consider the accessibility needs of seniors, ensuring that the destinations and activities are senior-friendly. They take into account mobility concerns and offer accommodations that cater to varying physical abilities, making the trip more enjoyable for all participants.

Forge Meaningful Connections

With a more relaxed pace, you have the chance to interact with locals and fellow travelers in a more meaningful way. The unhurried environment fosters camaraderie and allows for deeper conversations, creating opportunities for friendships and lasting memories.

Experience Authentic Culture

Slow-paced tours often veer away from the crowded tourist traps, providing a chance to experience the authentic culture of a place. You can indulge in local cuisines, witness traditional customs, and partake in unique activities that might not be possible on fast-paced tours.

Reduce Stress and Fatigue

Traveling at a slower pace can significantly reduce the stress and fatigue commonly associated with rushed trips. This approach is especially beneficial as it allows you to maintain your energy levels and enjoy the experience to the fullest.

Immerse in Nature’s Beauty

These tours often include visits to serene natural landscapes, where you can bask in the tranquility of breathtaking scenery. Whether it’s a scenic countryside, a peaceful coastal town, or a majestic mountain range, slow-paced tours provide ample time to appreciate the beauty of nature.

Accommodate Special Interests

Slow-paced tours can be tailored to cater to specific interests, such as art, history, wildlife, or wellness. You can choose tours that align with your passions.

Finding the Right Balance

Margaret Manning, the founder of Sixty & Me and an avid traveler, reflects on the differences between slow-paced and fast-paced traveling.

Years ago, I had the opportunity to join Road Scholar on a trip to Prague. On this adventure, I learned just how fun group travel can be. Every day had a theme, which I loved. At the same time, the formal activities weren’t overwhelming. I had time to walk alone. I discovered secret parks. I wandered through tiny shops and expansive gardens. And, of course, I made plenty of new friends.

Shortly after my Road Scholar trip, I completed a one-month train journey around Northern Europe. This second trip was much more fast-paced. In 10 days, I traveled 6,000 kilometers and visited 12 cities. I traveled by train, car, boat, and bike. I stayed in a new hotel every 2 days. It was an amazing experience… if a little tiring.

My goal on both of these trips was to inspire the women in our community to step out of their comfort zones and consider alternative travel options.

One of the questions that I asked myself over and over again, as I worked my way around Europe, was whether I was pushing too hard. Was I trying to see too much? Would it have been better if I had taken it easy and “stopped to smell the roses” more often?

Obviously, there is no “right” or “wrong” answer to this question. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, like many women over 60, I feel a great deal of pressure to see as much as I can in the time that I have left. On the other hand, if I am honest, sprinting from place to place is harder on my body and mind than it used to be.

Does Road Scholar Offer the Best Blend of Fast and Slow-Paced Travel?

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that Road Scholar is actually an amazing blend of fast and slow-paced travel. On the one hand, all of their programs offer intellectually stimulating activities. They keep your mind buzzing (sometimes spinning) with new ideas.

On the other hand, they don’t force you to go beyond a comfortable pace. If you want to take part in the optional activities, you can. If you want to use your free time to sit at a local café and watch the people passing by, this is also completely fine.

Perhaps this was the main lesson that I learned on my most recent trips.

There is no “right” or “wrong” way to travel. There is no “too fast” or “too slow. There is only the pace that we need at a certain time in our lives.

Sometimes we need intensity. Other times, we need intimacy. The trick is to take the time to evaluate where we are in our lives and to choose our travel adventures consciously.

I just returned from a two week group travel tour of Ireland and Scotland. Although it was wonderful, I found the fast pace and constantly being on the go stressful and tiring. I am a 70 yo female in good health and fit! Plus, I caught Covid for the first time ever and although fairly mild, it still took its toll and I spent the majority of the trip wearing a mask. As a result of my experience, I had decided over the course of the trip that any future trips I take will be slower paced and immersive. This article is spot on!

Sandra Roussy

Hi Gmarie, I’m so sorry Covid put a damper on your trip to Ireland and Scotland. Slow paced tours are definitely an excellent way to discover new places without feeling rushed and pressured. They are great for getting an authentic feel of a destination and especially for getting an immersive experience. Keep us posted on your future travels!
