Best Youth Baseball Bats of 2023 – 10 USSSA and USA Picks

We’ve taken the hassle out of picking the best little league bat by doing the heavy lifting on your behalf. The section below provides in-depth reviews of the best youth baseball bats of 2022 with some fantastic picks.

For U-trip, our favorite USSSA bat of 2023 is the 2023 Marucci CAT X . Players will enjoy the stiff feel, super-responsive barrel, smooth taper, its pop, and fantastic sound once it’s fully broken in. Once again, Marucci has delivered with the CAT X. The best USA bat of 2023 is the 2023 Drop 10 ADV 360 . Players will love its big barrel, massive sweet spot, great performance right out of the wrapper, and no sting in the hands.

Our 3 Best USA Bats

Best USSSA Youth Bats of 2023

1. 2023 marucci cat x composite.

best bat for 13u travel baseball

For 2022, the CAT 9 composite was easily one of the best USSSA youth bats we’ve ever swung. From the looks of things, the CAT X composite is just as good, if not better! We swung the drop 8 and were blown away – 2023’s CAT X (or CAT 10 if you like your Roman numerals) is way more than just a color change.

2023’s CAT X sports a composite barrel that, despite feeling the same as last year, has improved tech to which we attribute the performance boost. This bat also has a stiffer, thinner handle that tapers smoothly into a smaller knob that we love compared to last year’s CAT 9.

At first, your CAT X will likely sound quite bland, and the sweet spot small, but please keep hitting; this bat is absolute gas and will only get hotter. Ours noticeably changed about 20 swings in, and after another 100 swings, the CATX was fully broken in and came into its own, putting out bonkers numbers. Compared to the CAT 9 composite, the CAT X feels lighter, stiffer, and more rigid. Swing weight feels more or less similar to last year’s model, and durability is just as great.

2. 2023 Rawlings Icon Review

best bat for 13u travel baseball

After seeing the internet abuzz upon its release, we picked up the Rawlings Icon, and it does live up to all the hype. The Icon is a two-piece, all-composite youth baseball bat with a balanced swing feel.

We tested the drop 10 and loved the sleek golden-black colorway and overall feel in the hands. It has a thin handle that, when coupled with the balanced swing weight, is smooth and swings like a dream. The barrel’s carbon composite and connector piece give this bat great pop while keeping it nice and stiff.

Why we love the Rawlings Icon: This drop 10 model will likely be one of the best USSSA youth baseball bats for 2023 thanks to how good it sounds, its balance (almost as good as the Meta), and its big barrel that makes it easy to find the sweet spot.

It does take a while to fully get going, but at about 50 hits in, this bat is mashing the ball. It didn’t do too well on mishits, probably because it’s a little stiff for a two-piece, and the knob is a tad bulky, which might hurt your hand and make it hard to find a good grip.

3. 2022 DeMarini CF USSSA Baseball Bat

best bat for 13u travel baseball

The 2023 CF Mashup is 2022’s CF in a fancier get-up. For 2023, the Mashup has mostly stayed the same, save for cool-looking graphics. The 2022 bat had tons of pop and a massive sweet spot, and the 2023 rendition is no different.

For 2023, the CF Mashup comes as a balanced, two-piece, all-composite bat that will give players tried and true performance and feel in the hands. Sweet spot is huge, barrel control feels great, and the CF Mashup consistently performs incredibly well.

Swing weight is really well balanced and should suit contact hitters who want the ability to generate speed in their swings and lots of control through the zone.

The CF Mashup is available in sizing that ranges from 28, 29, 30, and 31 inches in length and comes in 3 drop weights – a light swinging drop 10, the heavier drop 8, and the even heavier drop 5 for that player that will soon be transitioning to drop 3 bats.

We haven’t had the CF Mashup long enough to test out its durability. Still, going by last year’s durability issues with the 2022 CF, we’re reluctant to have it at the top of our list, especially with competition from the CAT X and the Rawlings Icon. While the jury is still out, we recommend only using this as your gamer for now.

4. 2022 Louisville Slugger Meta USSSA Baseball Bat

best bat for 13u travel baseball

The 2nd rendition of the USSSA Meta is our X pick. The 2022 USSSA Louisville Slugger Meta is a balanced two-piece, fully composite bat.

The EKO composite material used on the barrel delivers a light-swinging, big-barreled bat that sounds fantastic on contact with the ball. The composite also enhances barrel length while keeping the bat lightweight and well-balanced.

The VCX2 connection piece flexes in a way that lets both the barrel and handle move independently of each other, which gives a smooth feel on contact while minimizing sting on mishits. Finally, the end cap maximizes barrel length and keeps the bat light enough to improve swing speed further.

Youth baseball players will enjoy the Meta’s big barrel, fantastic sound, and most importantly, its performance. The drop 8, in particular, will be an excellent choice for a player who wants a moderately light-swinging bat with a massive barrel. The drop 10 will suit contact players aged 7-to-12-years-old.

That said, we shrill think that the USSSA CF is a better pick over the USSSA Meta USSSA, but the Meta still makes our best youth baseball bat list for its performance overall.

5. 2022 Easton ADV Hype USSSA Baseball Bat

best bat for 13u travel baseball

The 2022 ADV Hype is another one of our picks for best youth baseball bat and another two-piece composite that we love. From its construction to how it looks. It replaces the ADV 360 everywhere apart from USA bat.

Thanks to a new composite barrel, connection piece, and handle, performance is superb. Easton claims that the TCT (Thermo Composite Tech) used on the ADV Hype’s barrel is new, but online forums have been awash with claims that the 2022 Hype takes the TCT composite and end cap from the legendary MAKO line of bats.

Drops 8 and 10 will suit contact hitters who like their bat with a big barrel and a light swing. The drop 5 feels end-loaded and is thus best for power hitters transitioning to a heavier drop 3. The sweet spot, once you find it and hit right on it, the barrel jumps.

Our favorite feature is the soft knob (or Power Boost Knob, as Easton calls it). This soft knob replaces the hard plastic with pliable rubber that feels so much more comfortable in the hands.

The USSSA 2022 Easton ADV Hype is available in various sizes to suit  every type of player on the team . Lengths range between 27 to 32 inches. Drop 5’s come only in 2 5/8 while the drop 8 is available in 2 3/4. The drop 10, on the other hand, is available as both a 2 3/4 and a 2 5/8.

Best USA Bats of 2023

1. 2023 easton adv 360 usa review.

best bat for 13u travel baseball

The Easton ADV 360 comes as a balanced, two-piece, all-composite baseball bat. For 2023, the Easton ADV exists only in USA baseball. The USSSA and BBCOR version of this bat is the ADV Hype.

The Launch composite used on the barrel gives players a big barrel, massive sweet spot, and great performance right out of the wrapper. Once it’s fully broken in, the ADV is a beast.

Its foam-filled two-piece connection piece eliminates vibration and hand sting and gives players a stiffer connection. Coupled with Easton’s “Flow-Tack Grip” (resembles Lizard Skin bat grips), players get additional comfort & tack.

The Power Boost Knob is our favorite feature. Made out of pliable rubber, the knob further cuts down on hand sting while improving comfort and feel in the hands.

The drop 11 will be a great addition for younger batters who aren’t quite ready to swing a drop 10. On the drop 11, however, Easton is using their launch composite material instead of their ultra-light composite to rescue durability at the expense of hot-out-of-the-wrapper performance. We haven’t had this bat long enough to speak on the drop 11’s durability, but it is something to consider, especially at that price tag.

The drop 10s are a nice middle-ground bat that will suit most players and easily the best bat for players between 9 and 11 years of age. Bigger, stronger, more experienced players between 11 and 13 years old will benefit from added weight, so they are better off swinging the drop 8 or drop 5.

The 2023 Easton ADV 360 will be perfect for players that like a big barrel, light swing, and great feeling two-piece composite.

2. Axe Bat Strato 2023 USA Bat Review

best bat for 13u travel baseball

If you’re looking for an alloy USA bat, the 2023 Axe Strato will be an amazing pick, especially when you consider its price vis-a-vis how well it performs.

The 2023 Axe Strato is a one-piece and all-alloy bat that comes in a range of sizes between 27 to 32-inches in length. The alloy barrel makes for a solid, durable  bat that doesn’t need a break-in period, and a composite end cap works to keep swing weight low.

We swung the slightly heavier drop 8, that carries a slight end load compared to the drop 10 and it hits the ball really well,

All Axe Bats have Axe’s patented handle design, and the Strato is no different.

The 2023 Axe Strato will suit entry-level players, or big hitters that are looking for a stiff, light swinging bat with a huge barrel that they can wring performance out of.

It hits the ball really well, with lots of pop and a great-sounding ping to boot, making it well deserving as one of the best USA bats of 2023. We didn’t like that it would occasionally sting the hands (despite that being typical for one-piece bats). Vibration can be overlooked by bigger hitters though, and younger pitchers likely won’t swing the bat hard enough for it to be an issue.

3. DeMarini 2022 CF USA (-10) Review

best bat for 13u travel baseball

The CF has been one of the best USA bats for several years now. It’s pretty much been the same bat with a different coat of paint – If it ain’t broke, right?

This balanced, drop 10 two-piece, fully composite bat. The two-piece composite construction allows for better weight distribution along the CF’s barrel, thus allowing for a combination of control, speed, and excellent balance.

The CF’s barrel tech gives it a massive sweet spot that’s both consistent and super responsive.

Its connection piece flexes to give players smooth hits while limiting vibration from traveling down into the hands. Finally, the end cap tops it off by blending strong but lightweight materials that better the barrel’s performance without affecting speed.

Contact players who need to generate speed will enjoy this lightweight, smooth swinging bat, and its huge barrel.

4. 2022 Louisville Slugger Solo -11 USA Review

best bat for 13u travel baseball

The 2022 Louisville Slugger Solo is a one-piece, all-composite USA bat. We love its big barrel, light swing, and stiff feel – definitely one of the best USA bats for beginners and contact hitters.

The USA version has a balanced swing weight and is only available in a drop 11. Swing weight is light, courtesy of a thinner wall-design single-piece alloy that gives lots of pop. The lightweight feel is further enhanced by the USA Solo’s composite end cap that shaves off weight to improve its lightweight and balanced feel further, giving players more control and generating faster swing speeds.

The drop 11 has earned rave reviews from beginners looking for a bat that swings light but is a performer. The barrel is a decent size, the bat swings light, and the price point won’t burn a hole through your wallet.

5. Easton 2022 MAXUM Ultra Drop 10 USA Baseball Bat

best bat for 13u travel baseball

Our fourth pick for best USA bat is the Easton Maxum Ultra. This balanced one-piece, drop 10, fully-composite USA bat has a huge sweet spot, stiff for power transfer to the ball, and feels great for a single piece.

For starters, the XXL Barrel on this bat is massive. Second, the carbon barrel is stiff as a one-piece bat but swings super light. Young players can generate decent bat speed while maintaining control, and the massive sweet spot allows them to make solid contact.

A big barreled, light swinging bat in the USA space is bound to be a popular pick, and the Maxum Ultra is a breath of fresh air in a field that’s replete with two-piece composites options.

Performance is excellent, feel in the hands is great for a one-piece composite, and it has an impressive amount of pop. As is typical with a one-piece, the Maxum does sting the hands, unfortunately – if you can get past that, the 2022 Easton MAXUM Ultra is a worthwhile pick.

How To Pick The Best Youth Baseball Bat – A Buyer’s Guide

Choosing the best youth baseball bat can be daunting. Where do you even begin??

From the different baseball bat brands, lengths, weights, and materials the bats are made from… There’s so much to take in!

The single most important consideration for choosing the best youth baseball bat for you is to pick a bat you’re going to be comfortable using. Here are a few factors that’ll help you reach this decision.

  • The league you/your player is in and its regulations
  • Age, height, and weight of the player
  • Size and weight of the bat – This greatly affects how the player hits & swings, their batting stance and ultimately their swing speed
  • The bat’s weight to length ratio (The drop)
  • Price of the bat
  • The life span of the bat
  • Type of material the bat is made of

When looking for the best youth baseball bat, what do you consider more important? Are you looking for value or are you okay spending top dollar?

Baseball bats differ quite a bit in price. Tee-ball bats cost as little as $30. Certain bats can even cost upwards of $250!

League/Association

A youth bat is a huge purchase. Before you even start to do research on the best one, make sure you find out the rules and regulations of the league your child will be playing in.

Different leagues such as the Little League, Pony Ball, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, Dixie, Dizzy Dean, USSSA, NFHS all have their own regulations.

It is not unheard of for a parent to fork out for the price of the best youth baseball bat, only to find out that league rules do not allow for the bat to be used.

Weight & Length

The weight of a baseball bat is measured by comparing it to its length – A figure known as the drop-weight. The higher the number, the lighter the bat is.

To measure this, subtract the weight(ounces) of the baseball bat from its length(inches).

Take for instance a 27-inch long bat. If this bat weighs 15 ounces, this bat is then considered to be a “-12” bat.

Baseball leagues have safety rules that require baseball bats to have a drop between -7 and -13.5. The lower the drop, the higher the bat speed.

Taller hitters need longer bats, while heavier bats can be used by strong hitters.

The general recommendation, however, is to pick a bat that is easy to use and control. However, pick a bat that has some mass, because this makes it easier to hit the ball with some power behind it.

Bat Sizing Chart

best bat for 13u travel baseball

To fight the best youth baseball bat for you, follow these 3 easy steps:

  • Find your weight range(in pounds) on the left side of the chart
  • Find your height range(in pounds) on the top of the chart
  • Trace down from your height & weight range until the point they meet in the middle. That is your ideal bat size.

Please Note: This chart only serves as a guideline. Finding the best youth baseball bat for you ultimately boils down to your personal preference, your strength and weight, and hitting style.

Try out different bats until you find the best one for you!

How To Care For Your Youth Baseball Bat

How to break-in your youth baseball bat.

If you intend on getting yourself an aluminum bat, you do not require to break it in. These bats work perfectly right out of the box.

With Composite Youth Baseball Bats, however, you’ll need around 120 to 200 hits to get the bat to perform at its peak.

Newer models do provide much better performance now right out of the box. When breaking in a composite youth baseball bat , start off at half your hitting power and gradually increase over time as your hit count goes up.

Rotate your bat ever so slightly with every couple of hits to make sure your bat gets broken in evenly.

What Is The Best Temperature For Your Youth Bat?

It is widely believed that  Composite Youth bats are more sensitive to temperature changes than most other bats out there.

While we haven’t found a maximum temperature above which you shouldn’t use your bat, manufacturers have their own suggestions on the minimum temperature at which to use your bat.  However, as a rule of thumb, do not use your youth baseball bat in environments under 55 degrees Fahrenheit .

Fun fact: Composite youth baseball bats have an increased pop in higher temperatures

How To Clean Your Youth Baseball Bat

Scuffs and marks will start to show on the bat after repeated use. Some players prefer to keep the bat dirty as a sign of all the battles the bat has been through. Sometimes, however, you want your bat to look as good as new.

Everyone has their “best trick” to clean their bats e.g soap & water. Most of them aren’t as effective.

One sure-fire way to ensure your bat is always sparkling clean is to use Magic Eraser.

Magic Eraser by Mr. Clean is an inexpensive yet incredibly effective way to clean your bat in no time.

More Youth Baseball Bat Tips

  • Do not overuse your game bat in the batting cage . Save it for game days to avoid excessive wear and tear.
  • Do not share your bat. Breaking a bat is a very real possibility, and the less hits there are on the bat, the less likely it is to break.
  • Dimpled balls will ruin your bat. Steer clear.
  • Your bat should not be used to knock dirt from your cleats. This will damage it.
  • When using a wood baseball bat , ensure you swing with the bat’s label facing you. This is meant to safeguard against breaking your wood bat.

When choosing the best youth baseball bat, remember to consider various factors before making your choice.

Factors such as the league you/your player is in, its regulations, the age/height/weight of your youth player, the drop of the bat in question, it’s size & weight, the material the bat is made out of, and lastly, the price of the bat, all influence your final pick.

Make sure you’re comfortable with the size of the youth baseball bat you choose.

Preference is another factor that isn’t given enough importance. For young players just beginning their journey in baseball, this is especially key.

Pay attention to your hitter’s style. Do they prefer to stand closer to the plate? Or do they prefer standing away from it and extending their swing? Do they prefer inside or outside pitches?

These questions will help you answer questions when looking at the taper of the bat. The taper refers to how soon the bat goes into the handle. A sharp taper is preferred by hitters who extend their swing.

Keep in mind that heavier bats give you more power, whereas lighter bats offer you more control and increase your batting speed.

At the end of the day, a one-solution-fits-all does not exist. Try out several bats before making your final choice.

Happy Selecting! 🙂

Best Youth Baseball Bats for 2023

I have noticed that parents are often looking for the best youth bat especially in little league. There is a lot of conflicting information out there, so it can be hard to know what type will work well with your child and their unique playing style!

  • Price; this was a big factor for me
  • Type of Brands
  • Aluminum or composite materials accounting for weather
  • Small or Huge sweet spot based on Barrel design
  • One piece bat or two piece bat
  • Bat length and drop weight
  • Weight distributed for end loaded or balanced swing and more.

So I began my own research to quickly learn everything I could about youth bats on the market. I hope you find the information helpful!

Some of the best youth baseball bats made from composite materials in the barrel and handle. A composite bat is typically   lighter and deliver a tremendous power due to the carbon fiber polymer used in the bat construction. This results in a larger sweet spot for a sweeter explosion of the ball off the bat.

The categories below are an overview at selecting the right youth composite baseball bat for your son. Depending on your little league, bat requirements differ in regards to the bat drop weight requirements.

Check your league regulations before purchasing your bat.

Marucci – Hot Hot Hot Bat !!

Perfect for Contact and Power Hitters with a Mid Balanced Barrel

Marucci CAT X Composite BBCOR

When it comes to selecting your next youth baseball bat you should consider a variety of factors like weight and height. Most importantly, you should be thinking about the bat size as it relates to your son. Personally, I know for years my son is more of a contact hitter. He needed a balanced bat with the sweet spot in the middle of the bat. An heavier bat would have hurt his production based on where he consistently hits the ball on the bat. Ultimately I wanted to make sure he had the confidence on the plate with the right bat size for his height and weight.

So, I wouldn’t recommend purchasing a $400+ plus bat, especially for little league, if it does not compliment your son’s hitting style. Additionally, purchasing a bat size that is “too big” or too long/ too heavy could actually hurt your sons swing. Below are a few of the things I will cover to help with the “marketing” lingo as you read about the youth bats and reviews.

  • Material
  • End Loaded vs. Balanced
  • Length/Drop
  • Training Bats / Hitting Accessories
  • Key Hitting Metrics Defined

I hope it helps as just read over some of the youth bats reviews.

Understanding the Difference Between the Types of Bat Barrels

While there are many popular youth bats and brands out there I wanted to focus first on what the baseball bat is made of. There is a big difference between a composite bat vs an aluminum vs a wood bats. The material and the bat barrel diameter could have an immediate impact on the sweet spot and how far your son can hit the ball. So let’s start with the basics based on some of the best youth baseball bat reviews for your son as he may be getting started in little league.

What are the Advantages of A Composite Bat?

best youth baseball bats

Some of the best youth baseball bats are made from composite material. Composite bats use material known as carbon fiber polymer within the bat construction. The integration of the carbon fiber polymer make up all or part of the overall composite material in a youth bat. Those that are made 100% of this material are known as composite bats. Those bats use part of the carbon fiber polymer are known as Hybrid or Composite Hybrid bats.

Advantages:

  • Improved Weight Distribution
  • More durable than wood bats
  • Trampoline Effect
  • Higher Damping Rate (reduces hand sting from mishits)
  • Greater “Pop” and Sweet Spot

Disadvantages:

  • Increased Costs or Higher Priced Bats
  • Potential for cracking in colder temperatures
  • Requires to be “Broken In” which equates to approximately 150 – 200 hits.
  • Less durable than aluminum/alloy bats

What are the Advantages of the Composite Hybrid Bat?

Some of youth bats are actually hybrid. The Hybrid Bat enjoys the benefits from both pure composites and alloy bats. They are known as a two-piece bat where the handle is alloy and the barrel is composite. Thus, the youth baseball hitter enjoys the larger sweet spot and lighter handle weight.

Overall, the composite bat is a dominate bat on the field that a young hitter wants in their bag. The ability to enjoy quick success delivers greater confidence and dominance at the plate. For those parents that don’t mind making the investment every season, these are some of the youth baseball bats options.

What are the Advantages of An Alloy or Aluminum Bat?

Some of the youth bats are aluminum or alloy. The aluminum or alloy are exactly as the name describes. It is a bat constructed from 100% from aluminum. Some additives known as aluminum may be integrated to “enhance” the bat. The price difference between aluminum or alloy bats vary due to the quality of the aluminum or alloy material.

Advantages:

  • Less expensive than most composite or hybrid bats
  • “Hot Out of the Wrapper” meaning this is a game ready bat and does not require a “break in” period
  • Single Wall Design are lighter and easier to swing
  • Double Wall Design increases the sweet spot and durability
  • Can be used in any weather condition
  • The loud “Ping” sound just sounds cool
  • Hand stings from mishits
  • Feels stiff on contact similar to wood
  • Single Wall Design are less durable
  • Double Wall Design are heavier due to added mass
  • Visible dents or can be felt when you rub your hand on the barrel

The aluminum or alloy bat still remain very popular at all skill levels of play. The price is determined by the quality of the bat but it may be considered a bargain compared to some of the higher priced composite bats. Read over some of the youth bats reviews to see if what other parents may have to say.

What You Should Consider Buying A Wood Bat?

What can I say about the wood bat. It has been around since the game started. They are some of the best bats to start with. What I love about wood bats is the sound at the “crack of the bat”. Additionally, more and more wood bat tournaments are popping up.

Most kids struggle with the smaller barrel and weight but I would say the best bat is a wood as they are the great equalizer. Both the composite and aluminum bats outperform the wood bats in terms of batted ball distance. So it is not a surprise to see the power hitter only get a single with a wood bats.

Below is a great Dicks Sporting Goods has a wood materials comparison chart.

Best Youth Bat Barrel Types

To best address this section you should be able to determine what type of hitter your son is. Is he a power hitter or a contact hitter? If you are unsure then let me clarify a bit more just in case! I get it especially as us “dad’s” all believe are kids are power hitters when actually they are a contact hitter.

  • Contact Hitter – They rarely strikes out and move the line by putting the ball in play. Typically fast runners and usually are the lead off. Generally prefer a Balanced Bat.
  • Power Hitter – When they connect, watch out! Bomb droppers. Not everyone can be a power hitter. Expect a power hitter in the four hole to move the runners.

So with these generic definitions we should be able to pinpoint type of weight distribution you should consider. Majority of the youth baseball bats reviews will usually end loaded or balanced for type of bat.

Best Youth Bats by Hitting Style

Contact Hitters Should Use Balanced Barrels

Some of the best youth baseball bat of are balanced. If your son loves hitting the gaps, typically hits singles and doubles they should consider a balanced barrel bat.

A balanced bat will have the weight evenly distributed from the tip of the handle to the end of the barrel which allows for complete control through the hitting zone with increased swing speeds. This is known as understanding what the proper length to weight ratio is for your son. Also, these types of bats generally have thick handles that not only provides a better grip but better durability as well.

This is helpful to generate greater bat speed without sacrificing bat control. A great option when looking at all of the best youth baseball bats on the market.

Power Hitters Should Use An End Loaded Barrel

Some of the best youth baseball bats of 2022 are made for power. The power hitter love the end loaded barrel bat. Not everyone can properly swing this type of barrel bat properly and not for the typical player. The reason why is that it takes alot of arm strength for proper control of the bat.

Additionally, a portion of the overall weight is geared towards the end of the barrel. This generates more mass behind one’s swing which results in increased power and ball flight for those big hits.

If you find that your son has great bat speed and is often getting ahead of the ball then you may want to start exploring an end-loaded barrel bat for their best youth baseball bats.

What is the Bat Barrel Diameter and Why Does It Matter?

The barrel diameter is the width of the bat barrel. It ranges in size from 2 1/4 inches to 2 5/8 inches for youth bats. The larger the barrel diameter, the bigger the sweet spot on the bat barrel.

Best Youth Baseball Bats by Length/Drop

As we start to understand how to select the best youth baseball bats your son needs this section is critical for his success. If you get this wrong you could either select a baseball bat that is too heavy or too light for your son. This would impact their performance on the plate and could then start to deteriorate his confidence. As you read for the right youth baseball bat reviews, it will always cover the length and drop kids are using.

Below is a chart I would use strictly as a reference. The physical characteristics of each child could vary greatly.

Baseball Bat Chart best youth baseball bats

Understanding the Youth Bat Length

There are three additional ways to understand length and if the length of the best youth baseball bats is correct.

  • Measure from the knob of the bat in the center of the chest to the tips of your fingers.
  • If the knob of the bat reaches from your chest and your child can grab the barrel of the bat.
  • When wearing cleats, the bat should be no higher than your hip and/or reach the center of your palm.

Get the Right Fit for the Best Youth Baseball Bats

Understanding the Youth Bat Drop

Honestly, the drop weight of the baseball bat is just as critical as the length of the bat. (See the illustration above provided by Dicks Pro Tips). If the bat is too heavy then your son could have poor hitting mechanics or less success at the plate.

You should pay attention to this key metric when evaluating upgrading your next youth all bat. o clarify, the drop is part of the formula used to determine the bat weight. Additionally, each inch is approx. 1 ounce. The formula is simply (Length) minus (drop weight) equals (weight of bat) in ounces. So if the length of the youth baseball bat is 30 with a drop 10 then (30 – 10 = 20 ounces).

Another typical scenario is your son hits his growth spurt and now swings a drop 12 today. It is time to move up from a 29″ to 30″ bat length. This adds one ounce alone.

However, because of his age and depending on which league he typically plays in, it may be mandatory he starts to swing a drop 10 in the next spring season.

Therefore, you add one ounce from the length and two additional ounces because of the drop weight. Total of 3 ounces have been added which is significant. It is recommended that at least 6 months of swinging the heavier bat before using it on the field.

This is very important as you select your looking at all of the best youth baseball bats.

What is the best bat for 10u baseball?

There is no definitive answer to this question, as it depends on a number of factors, including the child’s size, strength, hitting style and little league bat rules. However, there are a few general guidelines that can help you choose the right youth bat for your child.

First, consider the child’s weight and height. A youth bat that has a barrel design that is too long or too heavy can be difficult for a child to swing, and may actually hinder their performance. Conversely, a bat that is too short or too light may not provide enough power.

Next, take into account the child’s hitting style. A child who is a power hitter will likely benefit from a heavier bat, while a contact hitter may want to look for a bat with a bigger sweet spot, a thinner barrel for a faster swing on every swing!

Some good youth bats you may want to consider:

  • DeMarini CF drop 10
  • Easton ADV drop 10
  • Marucci Cat Series drop 10
  • Louisville Slugger Solo drop 10 or drop 12

Although there are many more options I would check your little league rules to make sure you look at the best bats available in your local area.

Clarification on “Best Youth Baseball Bats”

The phrase “the best youth baseball bat” in this article will vary as you conduct your own research on various sites. I will be focusing on bats up to the point kids will start high school which typically are for the hitter up to 14 years old.

It is important to call this out is because young players hit their growth spurts at different times. So 10 year old could have greater bat control with a heavier drop 8 bat than his teammates who may swing a drop 10 bat. It all depends on how young players can handle the size and bat weight.

Best Youth Baseball Bats Summary

What Size Bat Should You Get for Your 13-Year-Old?

Selecting the right baseball bat plays an important role in the player’s overall performance on the field. Although there are similarities, there are a couple of differences between selecting a bat for a 13-year-old versus a younger baseball player. One of the main differences is the drop weight of the bat and at this point in the player’s career, they might prefer a one-piece over a two-piece construction or vice versa. Another difference might be the feel of the bat and whether that bat is balanced or end-loaded. Lastly, the 13-year-old age group is an in-between age for baseball players. Luckily for you, we have an assortment of Senior League and BBCOR Certified bats for you to check out.

In this article, we’ll cover:

Baseball Bats for 13 Year Olds: Sizing Chart

Baseball bats for 13 year olds: how to choose the right bat, list of the best baseball bats for 13 year olds, 13 year old baseball bat reviews & comparisons.

The 13-year-old age group can be tricky when deciding on a bat as some players will swing a bat with a -5 drop weight and others will swing a BBCOR Certified -3 drop weight bat in preparation for high school. This chart will help the decision-making process for someone who is not sure which drop weight, while also considering the player’s height and weight.

With some 13-year-old hitters using a -5 drop weight and some using a -3 drop weight, it is important to consider the length, swing weight, and materials used when selecting a bat. For a smaller player, it is ok to stay with the -5 drop weight to give the player another year to grow and get stronger before high school baseball. Thus, a 31” 26 oz bat or a 32” 27 oz bat would be ideal. Along with this, if the player is swinging a -5, they can choose any swing weight they prefer such as a balanced bat or an end-loaded bat.

For a 13-year-old who is looking to make the jump to the BBCOR Certified -3 drop weight, it is recommended that they stay with a 31” or 32” bat. Since this is a big step for players in this age group, it would also be a good idea to choose a bat with a balanced swing weight. This will provide them with a better opportunity to catch up to pitches and not feel like the bat is too heavy. Along the same lines, choosing a one-piece bat might also help the player control the bat head and increase bat speed as compared to a two-piece bat.

Baseball Bat Length for a 13 Year Old

As discussed above, a 13-year-old should swing either a 31” or 32” bat whether it is a -5 drop weight or a -3 drop weight. If you are still not sure about a proper bat length or if you believe you need a longer bat than a 32” there is a way to check. Let’s walk you through this process step-by-step.

  • Place the knob of the bat at the center of the player’s chest and point it to either side
  • Have the player raise their arms straight to the side of their body
  • The bat and arm should be parallel to one another
  • If the player can comfortably reach their fingertips to the end cap, the bat is a proper length

Baseball Bat Weight for a 13 Year Old

Choosing the right bat weight can be tough for the 13-year-old age group. Some players will be swinging -5 drop weight bats while some will also swing -3 drop weight bats. For the player who is still waiting on a growth spurt or developing their hitting skills, it is recommended that they swing a -5 drop weight bat. While most hitters in this group will swing a 31” 26 oz bat or 32” 27 oz bat, there will be a select few that swing a 33” 28 oz bat. This will depend on the height and strength of the hitter and if they are able to pass the bat length test, as stated in the previous section, with a 33” bat.

If the player is bigger and strong enough to catch up to pitches with a -3 drop weight bat then I would recommend going with this drop weight. This will only help them with the transition to high school baseball where all players are required to swing a -3 BBCOR Certified bat. Most 13-year-olds with a -3 drop weight will be swinging 31” 28 oz bats and 32” 29 oz bats at this age group as this provides a good transition from -5 to -3.

Bat Drop for a 13-Year-Old’s Baseball Bat

Bat drop refers to the difference between the length and the weight of a baseball bat. For example, if a bat is 32” and 27 oz then the bat would feature a -5 drop weight. When deciding on a drop weight for a 13-year-old, the player or parent can decide between a -5 drop weight or a -3 drop weight. As the player is only one year away from playing high school baseball where it is required to swing a -3 BBCOR Certified bat, some 13-year-olds will be swinging a -3 drop weight.

On the other hand, if a player is not as big or still waiting on their growth spurt it might be a better idea to opt for the -5 drop weight bat. This will allow for the player to grow, get stronger, and develop their hitting skills another year before making the jump to a -3 BBCOR Certified bat. Either way, a player needs to be able to get the bat around on pitches and should decide on a drop weight that will not inhibit their performance on the field.

General Bat Sizing Wave Chart for 13 Year Olds

Deciding between bat sizes and weight drop for a 13-year-old can be a bit confusing. To get a better visual on sizing a 13-year-old with a baseball bat, this wave chart will show the ranges dependent on the player’s size. 2-3 sentence paragraph introducing the chart similar to this one adapted for 13-year-olds.

League Rules and Requirements for Baseball Bats

Researching league rules and regulations for a bat is very important, especially in the 13-year-old age group as players are using both drop weights of -5 and -3. While different tournaments may feature different requirements, one consistency is that all -5 baseball bats must feature a 1.15 Bat Performance Factor (BPF) stamp and all -3 baseball bats must feature a BBCOR Certification. In order to be legal for play, a bat must feature one of these certification stamps which are dependent on the bat’s drop weight.

Baseball Bat Materials

There are several different materials and constructions on baseball bats that will have advantages and disadvantages. Some materials you may see are alloy, composite, wood, and a combination of alloy and composite which is referred to as a hybrid construction. A one-piece alloy bat will not have as much flex on each swing which will allow the hitter to create greater bat speeds and result in higher exit velocities. A lot of players who are stronger will opt for the one-piece because of the higher exit velocities created. Hence, why these bats are so prevalent in college baseball. One disadvantage of a one-piece alloy bat is that they will not be as forgiving and will not dampen vibration as well on miss-hits.

A bat with two-piece construction will either feature all composite materials or will include both alloy and composite materials in a hybrid bat. The full-composite material bats will have a lot more flex on each swing, providing a whip-like action on the ball when contact is made. Full-composite bats will also usually have larger sweet spots and be more forgiving on miss-hits as compared to a one-piece alloy bat. A disadvantage of the composite two-piece bat is that the player will not have as much barrel control as with a one-piece bat. A hybrid bat that features a composite handle and alloy barrel will be an in-between option. While these bats will not typically have as much flex on each swing as a two-piece composite bat, they still will feature more flex than a one-piece alloy bat. With a metal bat, the materials are all preferences when deciding for a 13-year-old. However, if a player is looking for bat speed and wanting more barrel control as they make the jump to a -3 BBCOR Certified bat, I would recommend going with a one-piece alloy bat. These bats typically have more balanced swing weight options than a full-composite or hybrid bat.

Lastly, wood bats can be constructed out of various types of wood. Maple wood is the strongest type of wood used on baseball bats, birch is an in-between wood material that is used, and ash is the least durable but will flex a lot more than a maple wood bat does. For wood bats at this age group, it is recommended that players use a birch or maple wood bat as these will be more durable. Wood bats will have a smaller sweet spot and are a great option for 13-year-olds to train their hitting skills.

Budgeting for Baseball Bat

Although baseball bats can be expensive, there are several great options for anyone looking for a budget baseball bat. One-piece alloy bats will typically be the best option for a budget baseball bat as several companies create great one-piece alloy bats. Marucci’s F5 bat and StringKing’s Metal series bats are great options for anyone looking for a quality bat while on a budget. Price will increase when there is more composite prevalent in the bat. For example, an all-alloy bat will usually be the most affordable, a hybrid bat will be a mid-range budget, and a full-composite bat will typically feature the most expensive bat.

This list of bats for a 13-year-old covers both composite and alloy -5 baseball bats, as well as a great option for a -3 BBCOR Certified bat that will make for an easy transition to the -3 drop weight. As this is an age group getting ready to make the transition to high school baseball, it is important to have different options to ease the transition for the player. The following section will break down these bats and their material, drop weight, and feature a review as well.

Best USSSA Bats 2024 (February Updates)

best bat for 13u travel baseball

For January 2024, our tests showed the top USSSA big barrel bat is the 2024 Easton Hype Fire (Drop 10) . While durability might be a concern, many players and their parents prioritize hitting home runs over price. We’d highly recommend buying from authorized outlets for warranty protection. Other great options include Marucci’s CAT X Composite and DeMarini’s CF Mashup . Don’t overlook budget-friendly choices like Easton’s ALX and Maxum Ultra .

We get performance data from our bats directly from real USSSA hitters. And we use that data to find the best USSSA bats empirically. That is, we track thousands of swings from multiple players. We collect exit speeds, ball flight and survey data on a bat’s value, durability, performance, perception, popularity, and more. You can see the results below for 2024 bats (and all previous years); these are updated as the season rolls along.

2024 is upon us and the season for most is right around the corner. Winter workouts are in full swing. We didn’t change our ratings much from the end of last year as the Hype is still poppy. As the season gets underway and we receive thousands and thousands of user reviews and comments we will most certainly see some changes. But, for now, get cracking.

Best USSSA Bats 2024 (February Updates) Write Ups

What is the right bat size.

We think the right size bat is way more important than the right model bat. Never buy the wrong size in the model you or your player might believe is hottest. Our data shows that the most significant piece to determine exit speeds is the swing weight of a bat. It follows that fitting the right size to the right player is single most important piece of data to get right. You can see more on our bat size chart .

We don’t see any major changes to the USSSA line in the short run. However, some rumors suggest we’ll see a few new USSSA bats in October of 2023.

USSSA Bat Compression Data

USSSA compressions can be a distracting topic, and we’re cautious about showcasing minor fluctuations in compression ratings on a device and process with its level of flux. However, for those interested, we’d instead you get this from us, who are not involved in compression bat sales, knowing we aren’t trying to manipulate it to show a specific outcome or imply a particular result. Note that these are all drop 10 bats with varying degrees of “worked in.”

As summer approaches, so does the start of the youth baseball season. Whether your child is a seasoned player or just starting out, the right equipment can make all the difference. And baseball bats come first in this context.

When short-listing the best youth baseball bats, it’s important to consider factors such as weight, length, material, your child’s skill level, and personal preference. But with so many options on the market, it’s pretty overwhelming to choose the right one.

That’s why I’ve put together a guide for parents to find the perfect youth bat, including popular brands like Easton , Louisville Slugger, DeMarini, and Rawlings .

So, gear up and get ready to let your kid step up to the plate with confidence with the help of this guide.

Table of Contents

Why Should You Consider My Recommendations?

“As a former minor league player and current high-school baseball coach with over 200 students, I understand the importance of having the right equipment to perform at best on the field.

I’ve tested and evaluated various bats, assessing factors such as drop weight, sizes, construction, grip, and personal preference.

Without that, I also went through 126 in-person and 700+ online feedback from other parents about how their kids respond to the bats I’ve listed.

Because of the such pole of information, this review gives you an exact idea of how much value these bats will provide.”

8 Best Baseball Bats for Youth – At a Glance

8 best youth baseball bats review.

In this section, I’m gonna share why each of these bats is unique in their values and the odds. Let’s head into my favorite youth baseball bats, for starters.

Best Youth Baseball Bats for Value – Rawlings Raptor T-Ball Bat

best bat for 13u travel baseball

Featured I Liked the Most

  • Brand: Rawlings
  • Material: Composite
  • Size: 24 to 26 inches
  • Bat Weight: .75 to .84 lbs.
  • Color: Neon Blue/Green, Royal Blue

The Rawlings Raptor is a great option for children jumping out in tee-ball and is perfect for players aged 7 and under.

In brief, the blend of strength and control in this bat makes it an excellent choice for young players looking to improve their skills and take their game to the next level.

Not only me but hundreds of more parents have also praised its design, quality, and bat performance factor. So, let’s find out why it’s a worthy investment.

1-Piece Alloy Built

I’ve found this bat is made out of composite materials, mainly alloy. To test its durability, my kid tossed and knocked it several times on hard masonry. And I’ve not seen any signs of wear and tear.

-12 Drop Weight

One of the key features of the Rawlings Raptor T-Ball Bat is its lightweight design. With a -12 drop weight, it’s one of the lighter bats on the market.

Therefore, it feels easy for players to swing. This helps improve swing speed and provides a more balanced feel when hitting balls .

Perfect Size for Kids

In addition to its practical benefits, the Rawlings Raptor also gets my high marks for its design.

The youth bat is short and wide, making it easier for young children to hit the ball and develop their skills.

This design is a significant factor in the success of this product, as it helps to build the confidence of young players and encourages them to continue to improve their skills.

USA Baseball Bats

Without all these reasons, I also featured this bat in my best baseball bats collections as it’s a USA baseball bat. So, there is no reason to fear while participating in an event.

Pro Like Designs

Another great aspect of the Rawlings Raptor T-Ball youth bat is its design. The bat comes with 3 smart neon-style colors, which are surely gonna catch your kid’s attention at first glance. Don’t believe me? Show them once.

Whether you’re looking for a new bat for your child or for yourself, the Rawlings Raptor T-Ball Bat is definitely worth considering.

What I Liked the Most

  • Durable 1-piece alloy built
  • Lightweight design with -12 drop weight
  • Perfect size for young baseball learners aged 4-7
  • Approved by the USA Baseball Bat
  • Eye-catching MLB bat-like designs in stylish neon colors

Consider Before Purchasing

Just like typical kid’s baseball youth bats, this one also tends to last a single season at max. But I would say it’s not a big deal, as kids don’t want to live with a single bat.

Best Youth Baseball Bats with Military Grade Construction – Easton Typhoon USA Baseball Bat

best bat for 13u travel baseball

Featured I Liked The Most

  • Brand: Easton
  • Material: Aluminum
  • Bat Size: 26 to 31 inches
  • Bat Weight: 14 to 19 oz.
  • Color: Red and Green

If you can increase your budget, this Easton Typhoon USA baseball bat is another great deal to consider.

However, doubling the price compared to the Rawlings Raptor, there’s no major differentiation factor.

It’s nothing, just Easton products are a bit expensive because of their branding. Let’s check out why I’ve added this Typhoon to my youth baseball bats consideration.

best bat for 13u travel baseball

ALX100 Military Grade Alloy

Military-grade alloys are known for their durability and strength. They are built to last and withstand regular use’s wear and tear.

So, whenever I see a similar grade built material I can’t resist myself making an order. And because of the same traits, I also tried the Typhoon.

Additionally, the built quality provides a solid feel and maximum power transfer when making contact with the ball.

Overall, the investment in a high-quality youth bat like the Easton Typhoon can provide a better playing experience and improved performance on the field.

Larger Sweet Spot

The 2-1/4 inch bat barrel diameter in the Easton Typhoon USA bat is ideal for young and beginner players for several reasons.

Firstly, the larger bat barrel provides a larger sweet spot, making it easier for young players to make successful hits with the ball.

In addition, the larger barrel size provides a more forgiving hitting surface, which can be especially helpful for young players who are still learning the basics of the game.

Cushioned 2.2 mm Flex Grip

Because of the cushioned grip, your kids won’t feel the extreme shock and vibration that’s common when hitting baseballs.

And it’s important for younger players who are still developing their hand-eye coordination. The reduction of shock and vibration allows players to maintain a comfortable grip even on mis-hits, which can help prevent hand and wrist injuries.

Colors and Sizes for Kids

The above features are essential before buying a youth bat for a kid. However, to kids, the most appealing aspect is the design.

To lure your early buds, Easton introduced 2 colors combo, red and green, with a slight mix of black and gray.

In terms of size, it’s available in a range of lengths, from 26 inches to 31 inches, making it easy to find the right size for players of different ages and heights.

  • ALX100 military-grade alloy construction provides strength and durability
  • 2-1/4 inch barrel diameter provides a larger sweet spot
  • Cushioned 2.2 mm flex-grip helps reduce shock and vibration
  • Improves performance with a large sweet spot
  • Range of sizes makes it a versatile and practical choice for different players

However, the -12 drop weight and premium price point may not be ideal for all young players and budgets. You can also check out some of the best bats under $100 .

Best Youth Baseball Bats for Multiple Drop Weights – Rawlings 5150 Youth Baseball Bat

Figure 3. Best Youth Baseball Bats for Multiple Drop Weights Rawlings 5150 Youth Baseball Bat

  • Material: Aluminum
  • Size: 26 to 32 inches
  • Bat Weight: 1.19 lbs.
  • Color: Black Blue

The Rawlings 5150 youth baseball bat is a popular choice among players and coaches and is known for its power and speed.

It offers multiple drop weight options (-11/-10/-5), a key differentiation factor compared to other youth bats.

This feature allows young players to choose a bat that fits their size and skill level, making it easier for them to control and generate power. It’s especially beneficial for beginners who may not have the strength or coordination to handle a heavier bat.

Aluminum Built

Many MLB players and professional coaches prefer aluminum bats due to their durability and performance. Aluminum constructions are known for their durability and longevity.

Therefore, these are smart investments for players who want a youth bat that’ll last them for several seasons.

Since the Rawlings 5150 also has the same construction, there is no doubt you’ll get a durable and high-performing bat.

Better Plate Coverage

With the 2 5/8 inch barrel size, youth baseball beginner players get a good balance of plate coverage and swing control. The balanced size of the youth bat allows players to hit the ball with more accuracy and power.

Although it’s only one color option, I appreciate the sleek and stylish look of the blue and black design. The bat’s design is simple yet sporty.

Various Sizes

Players need to adopt a bat with the right length and weight for their size and skill level, as this can greatly impact their performance on the field.

For size, you can choose from 7 options ranging from 26 to 32 inches. However, even though it’s made of aluminum, it’s a bit hefty. I suggest choosing one with more drop-weight specs.

  • Has good “pop” or power to hit the ball further and with more authority.
  • Well-balanced design to improve control and make it easy to hit
  • Availability of multiple drop weight options
  • Textured cushioned handle for getting a firmer grip
  • 1-piece aluminum builds tend to last multiple seasons

The bat is only available in one color option, which may not be to everyone’s taste. Rather than that, I don’t think there’s any noticeable compromise with the youth bat.

Best Youth Baseball Bats for Big Barrel – Marucci Cat8 -10 USSSA Junior

Figure 4 Best Youth Baseball Bats for Big Barrel Marucci Cat8 10 USSSA Junior

  • Brand: Marucci
  • Size: 25, 26, and 27 inches
  • Weight: 2 lbs.
  • Color: White

It takes 1-2 years for kids to understand the benefits of big barrel USA bats. And starting with this Marucci Junior series instantly allows them to enjoy the paybacks.

Because of its larger barrel size (2 ¾ inches), they can seamlessly hit any ball. Besides, it eliminates the chance of missing shots.

I only have one player on my team who is using this Marucci. So, I combined his feedback with other customers’ reviews to add this product to my youth baseball bats list.

You can also check out this article to learn some interesting facts about other Marucci bats .

Solid Wall Design

This youth bat is made of aircraft-grade aluminum. Hence, I don’t have any doubt about its longevity.

What’s even more interesting is its multi-variable wall design. It not only adds positive marking to its durability but also enhances its performance.

Another performance factor of the Marucci is its ring-free barrel technology, which eliminates dead spots in the barrel.

It’s a more reliable option for players, as it minimizes the bat’s chances of breaking or performing poorly during games and practices.

Even Large Barrel

The 2 3/4 inch barrel diameter and balanced swing weight make this youth baseball bat an easy-to-adopt gig for players of all skill levels to handle and use effectively.

As the ball makes contact with a larger surface area, the player can generate more force, resulting in longer distances for their hits.

Taped Gripping

Unlike other kid baseball bats, this one comes with a taped handle. Underneath, a thin line of cushions is placed.

I don’t have any issue with the cushions, but the problem I identified is the smooth surface of the handle. Because of that, kids may find it a bit slippery after a long hour of practicing.

However, the comfortable grip reduces hand fatigue and allows players to swing with more ease.

  • Big barrel provides a larger sweet spot.
  • Made of aircraft-grade aluminum for durable and long-lasting service
  • Ring-free barrel technology enhances the bat’s performance
  • Highly recommended for its pop and ability to generate power
  • Approved USSSA bats series for different games and tournaments

The added tape can reduce the player’s ability to feel the bat, making it more difficult to determine the state of their contact with the ball. Besides, there’s no drop-weight technology used in the bat, which makes it quite hefty.

Best Youth Baseball Bats for TBall – Franklin Sports Venom Bat

Figure 5 Best Youth Baseball Bats for TBall Franklin Sports Venom Bat

  • Brand: Franklin Sports
  • Size: 24 to 26 inches
  • Weight: 0.69 to 88 lbs.
  • Color: White, Red, Black, Green, Blue, etc.

The appropriate age to give a T-ball bat to a child varies, but usually, children are ready to play T-ball around the age of 4 or 5.

If you’re planning to introduce your kids to baseball, this Franklin Sports Venom series is the best deal to consider within the $17 to $80 budget range.

This series was introduced in late 2021, and I got a chance to hang out with a few Tball learners in my team while inspecting the quality of the bat.

Coach pitching is required for learners. Check out if you can use T-ball bats for coach pitching or not.

best bat for 13u travel baseball

Unexpected Durability!

When it comes to the durability standard of Venom, it just blew my mind. The bat’s aluminum construction made it a breeze for them to take powerful hits even at this early age.

Besides, the lengthier and lightweight design of the bat also helps to increase its pop and bat speed, which is evident in how they swing the bat.

Gripping Strength

The extra tacky grip is a great feature as well. It allows kids to maintain control of the bat head, even with their little hands.

Personalized Weight and Colors

Unlike other USA bats, this one comes in the market with the maximum color codes, from black, blue, red, green, white, etc. The youth thriving Venom’s logo on each color wall looks pretty unique and lively.

Without the colors, multiple weight options exist, starting from 11 oz. to up to 16 oz. The weight will differ based on the size of the bat.

  • Can be used for both Tball and field-level baseball
  • Various lucrative and kid-style color options
  • 12 customization options based on weight and size
  • Tacky grip for firmer gripping on the handle
  • 1-piece alloy bats seems to be both sturdy and lightweight

While the aluminum baseball bat is designed to be durable, some customers have reported that the bat can dent or break after some time.

Best Youth Baseball Bats in Premium Category – Demarini 2022 Uprising Junior

Figure 6 Best Youth Baseball Bats in Premium Category Demarini 2022 Uprising Junior

  • Brand: DeMarini
  • Material: DX1 Alloy
  • Size: 26 to 30 inches
  • Weight: 1 to 1.25 lbs.
  • Color: Combination of Black, Blue, and Gold

I usually don’t suggest buying high-priced baseball bats for kids as they will need to upgrade to a professional bat soon. But if you’re not stingy like me, you can try out this DeMarini 2022 Junior series.

The DeMarini 2022 Uprising Junior has received high ratings and positive feedback on different online marketplaces.

Parents have reported that the bat has a good balance and pop, leading to improved hitting and increased confidence for their kids.

The DeMarini 2022 Uprising Junior is made with high-quality materials designed to provide exceptional performance and durability.

Its DX1 Alloy Barrel, for example, has been engineered to withstand the rigors of intense play while delivering peak performance. This allows players to confidently step up to the plate and make contact with the ball, knowing that their bat is built to last.

ION D End Cap

When a player can easily handle and control their bat, he can adapt to the new gig faster. This can be especially beneficial for young or beginner players who are still developing their skills.

To ensure this, DeMarini is built with an ION D end cap. It turns it into a light bat, while boosting the swing speed. This makes it easier for younger players to handle and control their swings, resulting in faster hits.

Suitable for All-Age Beginners

The bat is available in sizes ranging from 26 to 30 inches, making it suitable for a wide range of young players.

And when it comes to weight, it also meets the milestones to become the best youth baseball bat. The bat’s weight ranges from 1 to 1.25 pounds, providing a good balance for players aged 5 to 12.

  • Robust alloy barrel tend to hit stronger and feels durable
  • Feels pretty lightweight because of the ION D end cap design
  • The wide range of sizes makes it suitable for kids to teenagers
  • Helps players maintain a firm grip for extended periods
  • Delivers good pop to hit the ball with more power and distance

There’s not any color option to choose from except the black, gold, and blue combination. Besides, while it provides great value for its performance, it’s more expensive than others on the market, making it a mismatch for parents on a tight budget .

The Rawlings Remix series has already won numerous parents’ appraisals because of its ultimate functionality. And to kids aged between 8-10 years , the key selling factor is its sleek and stylish design.

Rawlings understands these factors well and thus added these factors to this Remix series.

– 10 Drop Weight

The Rawlings Remix baseball bat may be a little heavier than a typical -10 drop weight bat, but its weight is well-balanced and contributes to its overall power and performance.

Your 8-year-old son may need some time to get used to the heavier swing. But once he gets used to it, surely, he won’t want a new bat sooner.

Little League Length

I talked with one of the student’s fathers, who bought a 27-inch size for his 6-year-old kid. According to his statement, at the start, it was a bit long and heavy to swing, but over time his son adapted to the bat pretty nicely.

So, if you’re planning to get one for the age segment, I would suggest getting the 26-inch version.

Sublimation Graphics

While most beginner baseball bats have random stickers on the wall, it features stylish, sublimated graphics that add a touch of style to the design.

If you don’t know, sublimation is a printing process that embeds the graphics into the material, ensuring that the design won’t fade or peel over time.

The unique and eye-catching graphics mix of red, silver, and black on the Rawlings Remix make it stand out on the field.

1-Piece Aluminum Baseball Bats

This is the key reason how Rawlings managed to keep the price low. Also, it adds measurable benefits to your kids’ practice sessions.

For instance, one-piece baseball bats are less likely to produce vibration or sting on contact. So, these are more comfortable to use and reduce the likelihood of injury for youth baseball players.

Another good aspect is it provides consistent performance and weight distribution, which can help players with their swing mechanics.

When it comes to durability, it tends to survive harsh uses also because of the aluminum material.

  • Stylish, sublimated graphics add a unique and eye-catching touch to the design.
  • Reduced vibration and sting on contact offer a more comfortable experience
  • Durable construction with a solid 1-piece design is less likely to break or wear
  • USA bat certification makes it friendly for any tournament’s rules
  • Improved control and balance to help players refine their swing mechanics

It’s a bit heavier than some players are used to, particularly if they are used to lighter drop-weight youth bats. Also, the barrel diameter is slightly smaller because of its straight professional baseball construction style.

While most of the Louisville Slugger baseball youth bats I’ve tested earlier have unique differentiation factors, like the 2021 BBCOR , this 2022 Omaha is a set of values. It combines various size options, construction, balanced swing weight, and comfortable grip.

Because of that, it got 82% 5-Star ratings from many USA baseball parents. So, if you’re looking to settle your kids with the right youth baseball bats, it can be a sure choice also.

Size and Availability

The Louisville Slugger 2022 Omaha® (-10) USA youth baseball bat is available in seven sizes, ranging from 26 to 32 inches, making it easier to find the perfect size for your child.

Construction

The bat is made of ST7 alloy, which provides a great combination of strength and durability.

Particularly, the one feature that’s gonna be loved by your kid is its HUB 1-shot end cap design, which is a bit rare in single-piece youth bats. However, Louisville Slugger needed to justify its high pricing in any way.

With the blend of these 2 traits, it helps to reduce vibration and improve the overall feel of the bat.

Balanced Swing Weight

The balanced swing weight of the bat makes it easier for younger players to control and swing, helping to improve their hitting accuracy and power.

Swing weight refers to the distribution of weight throughout the bat. It greatly impacts a player’s performance and comfort when hitting.

A balanced swing weight, such as that found in the Louisville 2022 Omaha (-10)baseball bat, is crucial for younger players as it helps them to control the bat and generate more power with each swing.

This is especially important for younger players, who may not have the strength and endurance to handle heavier bats.

The bat features a synthetic leather grip. Because of that, it provides a more comfortable and secure grip, even in wet or humid conditions. It also reduces the risk of injury and fatigue.

  • Comes in 7 different sizes, making it suitable for different age groups
  • ST7 alloy with a 1-piece construction makes this bat a beast
  • Balanced weight distribution for easier swing
  • Synthetic leather grip provides a comfortable and secure hold
  • HUB 1-shot end cap design for reducing vibration

No color availability in a premium-priced bat is always frustrating. However, the design is soothing to capture most players’ attention.

How Do I Choose the Best Baseball Bats for My Child?

When buying a baseball bat for kids, there are several factors that parents should consider to ensure the gear is easy to adapt to the player. Some of the key factors to keep in mind include the following:

Keep the Weight within 15 to 20 Oz.

Consider the child’s age and skill level when choosing a bat. Younger and less experienced players may benefit from a lighter bat with a larger sweet spot , while more advanced players may prefer a heavier bat for more power. You can consider the below guideline for weight.

  • For players between the ages of 5 and 7, a bat weight of around 15-17 ounces is preferable.
  • For players between 8 and 10, a bat weight of around 16-18 ounces is preferable.
  • For players between 11 and 13, a bat weight of around 17-20 ounces is preferable.

Also, check out the weight preferences based on specific ages and heights.

24 to 29 Inches in Length is the Best for Kids

The length of the bat is an important consideration, as a bat that’s too long or too short can negatively impact a player’s performance.

You can consider the length based on the player’s height and age. However, age is comparably an easier factor to measure.

Here are some general guidelines for selecting the right length of bat for players of different ages:

  • For 5 to 7 years old, a bat length of around 24-25 inches is recommended.
  • For 8 to 10 years old, a bat length of around 25-26 inches is recommended.
  • For 11 to 13 years old, a bat length of around 27-29 inches is recommended.

Different bat size recommendation depending on the player’s weight.

A good way to determine the right length for a player is to have them hold the bat vertically with the barrel end on the ground, and their arms extended straight down. If the player’s fingertips reach the knob of the bat, the length is appropriate.

Choose Either Aluminum or Composite Bat Material

Differences between aluminum and composite bats.

There are different types of materials used for baseball bats. But I prefer using composite or aluminum-made bats. They both have upsides and downsides. For examples;

Aluminum Bats:

  • Pros: Aluminum bats are generally more affordable, durable, and have a more traditional feel.
  • Cons: They tend to have a smaller sweet spot and can vibrate more upon contact with the ball, which can be uncomfortable for some players.

Composite Bats:

  • Pros: Composite bats generally have a larger sweet spot, more pop (more distance), and reduced vibration on mis-hits.
  • Cons: They tend to be more expensive and can break more easily than aluminum bats.

Here is a detailed article on this Alloy VS Composite Bat Basic (This is Not a Science Class)

Ensure Getting a Larger Barrel

A larger barrel means a larger sweet spot, which is the area of the barrel where the ball is most likely to come off with maximum power.

Larger barrel bats are typically recommended for kids for several reasons. For younger and less experienced players, having a larger sweet spot can make it easier for them to make solid contact with the ball.

Best Brands Doesn’t Mean High Price Always

Best youth baseball bats brands include titles like FS, Rawlings, Louisville, Demarini, and Marucci.

Yes, it’s true. Most popular baseball bats brands have their premium and budget segments. Prefer choosing the budget segments if buying for kids.

Also, check out any warranties or guarantees offered by the manufacturer. Easton, Rawlings, DeMarini, Louisville Slugger, and Marucci are among the best baseball bats brands in the kid category.

8 Best Baseball Bat For 10-Year-Old

Jason Butler_Honest Baseball

Hello everyone. My name is  Jason Butler, and I live in California, America. I was a professional AAA Minor League Baseball player.  I lost my chance of playing MLB for injury issues, but I did not lose my love for baseball. I attended the coaching training program and am now working as a coach in a small school in San Diego.

I always love to share my experience and knowledge if that can help you. Play baseball, and stay fit.

Be A Better Hitter

Choosing The Right Baseball Bat

Photo of Dave Destler

One of the most important factors in a young player’s enjoyment of the game is his (or her) success at the plate. Besides proper training in the art and science of hitting a baseball, the bat itself plays a big role. Choosing the right Baseball Bat is crucial. Too many well-meaning but uninformed parents buy their kid a bat that is the wrong length or weight, or both. This adds yet another obstacle to the budding player’s efforts to succeed. The choices include different materials, different barrel sizes, different weights, different lengths, and different models for Tee Ball, Youth Baseball, Senior League Baseball, High School baseball, and College ball.

choosing-baseball-bat

A starting player needs to learn to make contact with the ball and hit close to the “sweet spot” of the bat before performance differences in the bats become an important factor. “Length-to-weight ratio” is perhaps the most important factor in buying a bat. This is a negative number denoting the amount of ounces the bat weighs less than the amount of inches of its length. For example, a 30-inch bat that weighs 20 ounces is a -10. The greatest differential commonly found is -12 for youth bats. Senior League bats are -7, used in Senior Little League as well as Pony, and -5 is for High School. Some of the mysterious letters and numbers on modern bats indicate the materials with which they’re made. For example, 7046 is a lower-end alloy, usually used in cheaper youth bats.

The point is, even a Major League player goes to a lighter bat to maintain bat speed, which is top priority in hitting. So it’s that much more crucial for a young, undeveloped player to have a light enough bat to swing with enough bat speed to hit the ball with some authority. When shopping for a bat, have your child hold it out to his side with the top hand (right hand for right-handed batter). If he cannot hold it straight out for 20 seconds or so without the arm starting to shake and the bat dropping, it’s too heavy.

It’s difficult to get a feel for a bat in a store, and even if you could safely swing it there, it’s very different from swinging at pitched balls hurtling towards you. If you really want to do some research, take your kid to a local batting cage and have him hit with a selection of cage bats available there on loan. You’ll see right away which ones are obviously too small, too big, or too heavy. It’s dialing it in to the exact right inch and ounce that’s tricky. But if you get close, and even if the bat might be an inch too long (remember – a longer bat puts more weight out further from the hands, which in effect makes it heavier to swing than a shorter bat of the same weight), the player can choke up a little. If he needs to choke up more than an inch, however, go to the next inch-size down.

Players over the age of 13, playing in advanced leagues, club ball, or high school, are usually adept enough to figure out the bat that’s best for them, and can borrow teammates’ bats to experiment. It’s the younger guys that need guidance and the right decisions made by mom and dad (or coach) to ensure they’re swinging the right bat for their size, strength, and skill level.

This article is out of date and should be taken down. High school and College players swing -3’s not -5’s. -5’s have not been swung in ages.

Yes, this article is outdated, but instead of taking it down we should update it. If you would like to contribute that would be great!

The article might be outdated, but some of the principles are still the same. Bat control at a younger age regardless of mandated bat drop is definitely key. My son has recently moved to the mandated drop 3 from drop 5 and decided to go with a shorter bar which also decreased weight by an ounce to achieve better bat control. Very informative and a good read. Some things maybe to add would be swing weights determined by MOI (moment of inertia) and how a heavier bat could swing lighter because of the weight distribution.

So my son just started 6th grade and hes playing baseball. He only weighs about 75 lbs. His coach told him to get a 3 lb bat, but when I go to the stire im seeing anything that says 3 lbs. What am I looking for to get the right bat?

3 lb bat makes no sense. Maybe his coach meant to say a -3oz. drop bat? I would clarify with the coach directly if it were me.

Exactly, a 3 pound bat would dent/break with one soft toss hit

Unless its literally just a short metal tube

You do realize that bats are measured in ounces correct? A 3 pound bat would be 48 ounces…

48 oz is about as heavy as what Babe Ruth swung his day…they don’t make a bat heavier than 34-36oz these days. Anyway, he needs a -12 (drop 12) or -10 at the heaviest because he’s a bean pole.

I’d suggest a 16oz, 28 in bat or a 18oz, 30in bat or some variation close to that.

What would a bat -12.5 relate to in ounces?? 16 oz??

Rob – It depends on the length. If a bat is a -12.5 then subtract 12.5 from the length to find the weight. If it is a 33 inch bat, the weight would be 20.5oz.

I’ve been told my son will need a -5 drop bat to play 13u travel. Is this true? since I’m shopping bats and -5 bats are far few and between..I know high school requires -3 drop but I’m thinking going from -10 to a -3 might be a huge difference and transitioning with a -5 drop could be a good thing anyway…

These charts are meaningless. My six year old played in a U7 Coach Pitch league. He was the only kid in the league using a wood bat (he insisted). It was a 28″ and I weighed it at 21.7 oz. He was one of the best hitters in the league.

wood bats aren’t the same as metal-aluminium bats. They probably have different requirements for wood bats making it look heavier.

What’s meaningless is your belief that one specific player, your son, invalidates a chart meant to be used for the average player. Think before you post.

Exactly, Thank you Scott for posting that, you beat me to it. Burnt son.

I have a 10 year old that stands 5’4” and goes 170#. We’ve spent numerous dollars because he’s killing the ball. He plays in the Minor division but just cleared 210 feet fence in a Major field!! He’s denting every bat we buy him! He’s practicing with a 32” wood Rawlings Big Stick but we got him an Easton -8 450 and he dented that too!! I was looking for a heads up on what kind of bat would be somewhat indestructible for him?? Barrel has to be no bigger than 25/8ths inches but need some weight because he’s always hitting to left or left center field,so his timing is on. Please help if you can??

Really wish you would talk wood bat, nobody uses metal bats anymore not counting school ball, most if not all amateur leagues have a wood bat rule due to people being badly injured or even killed by metal bats, its an abomination that needs to be outlawed period. Be that as it may most of us wood bat users can never find any good advice about wood bats, very frustrating. I play in the MSBL it is huge nationwide.

I have never seen one kid using a wood bat in ANY league. I’ve seen countless games of all ages and even coached early teens. Maybe it’s different depending on the area, but in Georgia, I’ve never seen a kid use a wood bat.

What is 13U Baseball? A Thorough Explanation

The other day I was writing an article on different youth baseball programs and I quickly came to realize that there is not much information on the web about what different types of youth baseball programs are out there. So I decided to do a little bit of research and put together this quick guide to help other people understand the same question I had – what is 13U baseball?

Closeup of a baseball laying in the grass with overlaying text that reads "What is 13U Baseball? A Thorough Explanation"

13U baseball is a youth baseball league where players who are 13 years old and younger can participate. The overall rules for 13U baseball are governed by the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA), which has multiple 13U baseball leagues and tournaments across the United States.

Even though the USSSA sets the overall rules for 13U baseball , each 13U league could have its own set of special rules if they choose. There are also two types of 13U baseball – “54/80 13U” and “60/90 13U”.

Age and Eligibility Rules for 13U Baseball

Base path distance for 13u baseball, pitching distance for 13u baseball, 13u 50/80 division vs 13u 60/90 divison, 13u baseball field dimensions, 13u baseball games can end early due to weather or mercy rule, rest day rules for 13u pitchers, 13u bat rules, 13u baseball tournaments, 13u baseball is different than little league.

A youth baseball player finishing a swing and preparing to run to first base

One of the first things that parents want to know is how old their kid has to be to play in a 13U baseball league. What age is 13U baseball?

13U baseball can be played by any player under the age of 13, regardless of what grade they are in. If a player turns 14 before May 1st of the current year, they are only eligible if they are in 7th grade. Any player who turns 14 prior to August 1st of the current year is ineligible for 13U baseball.

According to the USSSA, it’s possible for a 14-year-old to play in a 13U baseball league, but that player must turn 14 before May 1st and they must be in 7th grade. If the player does not meet these criteria, they will be eligible for 14U baseball.

The next question parents may wonder is if a 12-year-old can play 13U baseball.

In general, a 12-year-old is eligible to play in a 13U baseball league. Although each 13U baseball league can be set up slightly differently so it’s best to check with that league’s baseball director or check that league’s rules around a player’s eligibility.

When it comes to these baseball leagues, the “U” in “13U” stands for “under”. So a 13U baseball league typically means that any player who is 13 years of age and younger is eligible to play.

Base Distances and Pitching Distances for 13U Baseball

The back of a pitcher's head who is winding up. The batter, umpire, and catcher are blurry in the background

As kids get older, the distances for the bases and pitcher’s mound start to increase. 13U baseball is a little different because there are two types of divisions and each of these divisions is broken down by base distance and pitching distance.

Let’s start off by discussing base distance. How far are the bases for 13U baseball?

In 13U baseball, the bases are 80 feet apart for the 13U 50/80 division and 90 feet apart for the 13U 60/90 division. Part of the reason these divisions get their name has to do with how far apart the bases are from one another.

After we know the distance from one base to another, the next question people wonder is what distance does 13U pitch from?

In 13U baseball, the pitching distance is 50 feet for the 13U 50/80 division and 60 feet for the 13U 60/90 division. Part of the reason these divisions get their name has to do with how far pitchers are throwing from the mound to home plate.

At first glance, these numbers may seem random. But if we dive deeper into what each of these numbers mean, it starts to make more sense. What’s the difference between 50/80 and 60/90 for 13U baseball?

In 13U baseball, 50/80 means the pitching distance is 50 feet and the base path distance is 80 feet while 60/90 means the pitching distance is 60 feet and the base path distance is 90 feet.

So depending on a player or a parent’s decision, a 13U baseball player has the option to play on a diamond where the distances are further or shorter.

Just like with the distances of the base paths and pitching mound, the dimensions of a baseball field also expand as a player gets older. How big are 13U baseball fields?

In 13U 54/80 baseball, both right and left field are 275 feet from home plate while center field is 300 feet from home plate. In 13U 60/90 baseball, both right and left field are 320 feet from home plate while center field is 375 feet from home plate.

While not all baseball fields are made the same, the numbers listed above are the recommended dimensions of each baseball field according to USSSA.

For the other dimensions of the 13U baseball diamond, like the height and slope of the mound, how big the batter’s box and catcher’s box can be, and how big each of the bases should be, USSSA recommends following the official rules of baseball according to the MLB.

13U Baseball Games Are 7 Innings or 1 Hour and 45 Minutes

Following a similar pattern to how the field dimensions get bigger and the base paths get longer as player’s age, the length of the game also tends to increase. How many innings are in a 13U baseball game? And how long are 13U baseball games?

As a general rule, 13U baseball games last 7 innings or 1 hour and 45 minutes, whichever comes first. A 13U baseball game has the potential to extend beyond 1 hour and 45 minutes, but a new inning cannot begin after 1 hour and 45 minutes have been played.

Keep in mind that this time limit is a generality and some leagues or tournaments can vary this time. For example, the World Baseball Academy has 13U games lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes, Disney Youth Baseball has 13U games lasting 2 hours, and USA Sports NC has 13U games lasting 1 hour and 40 minutes.

It’s usually a good idea to check your league’s rules around time limits for 13U baseball games, but most 13U games will last around 1 hour and 45 minutes.

If the weather picks up and the umpire determines play cannot continue, a game could end early if the game is far enough along.

For a game to be completed due to weather, 4 innings must have been played. If the home team was winning after three and a half innings and the game is called due to weather, the home team will be declared the winner. This works similarly to how a home team does not have to bat in the bottom of the last inning if they are winning.

A game also has the possibility of ending early due to the mercy rule. What is the mercy rule in 13U baseball?

In 13U baseball, the mercy rule is enforced when one team is winning by 15 runs after 3 innings, 12 runs after 4 innings, or 8 runs after 5 innings. If the home team scores the required number of runs in the bottom of one of these innings, the home team will stop batting and the game will end.

Youth pitcher wearing a Yankees uniform winding up to deliver a pitch

Pitching is an important aspect in any baseball league, but USSSA places more emphasis on protecting the arms of young pitchers by implementing rules around how often they can pitch. What are the 13U pitch count rules?

In 13U baseball, pitchers are allowed to pitch the next day if they throw 3 or fewer innings in one day. If they throw more than 3 innings, they must rest for a minimum of one day. In addition, 13U pitchers can throw a maximum of 8 innings in a three-day window.

With these rules, it’s possible for a 13u pitcher to throw three days in a row by throwing 3 innings on the first day, 3 innings on the second day, and 2 innings on the third day. After this pitcher has thrown 8 innings in a three-day window, they need a minimum of one day of rest before they can pitch again.

Every level of baseball has different rules around which bats are legal and the USSSA has implemented its own rules around legal bats for 13U players . What bat is legal for 13U baseball?

In 13U baseball, players are allowed to use an aluminum bat with a maximum drop of -8 that also has the official USSSA logo stamp.

If a batter is caught using an illegal bat, the first offense is the player will be called out and possibly ejected from the game. If a team is caught using an illegal bat a second time, the manager will be ejected from the game.

And if an umpire catches an illegal bat after a ball has been put into play, the defensive team has the option to keep the result of the play or have the batter called out and have the baserunners return to where they were prior to the illegal bat being used.

Looking for more info on illegal baseball bats? Read my other article on what makes a baseball bat illegal .

One of the exciting things about 13U baseball is that there are a lot of different tournaments all over the United States and they happen at all times of the year. But how do you find 13U baseball tournaments near you?

If you’re looking for a 13U baseball tournament, the best place to check is USSSA’s website. USSSA has an event section on their website where you can search all the available events located in your state.

If the event is not full, managers are able to log into their manager’s account and register their team for that tournament. Go to the event section on USSSA’s website to view a list of events and tournaments.

Another thing to keep in mind is that 13U baseball is different than Little League. In Little League, players who are 13 years old can play in either the “ Intermediate (50/70) ” division (ages 11-13), the “ Junior League ” (ages 12-14), or the “ Senior League ” (ages 13-16). If a 13-year-old player wants to play on a 13U baseball team, they’ll need to go through a team that is associated with the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) .
