Why stay in a Bali jungle hotel?
In our view, Bali has some of the most beautiful jungles in the world; mountains, waterfalls, cloudy valleys and jungle hills overlooking the oceans. Staying in a jungle hotel allows you to fully immerse yourself in these beautiful natural surroundings.
Bali jungle hotels offer peace and tranquility. Most of these jungle hotels are situated in remote peaceful locations, providing a tranquil and serene atmosphere to relax and unwind. Jungle hotels also offer a unique and authentic experience that cannot be found in more traditional hotels. With their wooden interiors, Balinese artwork, and natural ambiance, jungle hotels provide guests with a truly immersive experience that is both cultural and educational.
Bali jungle hotels often offer a range of outdoor activities that are perfect for nature lovers. You can take guided walks through the rainforest, explore nearby waterfalls, or simply relax by the pool and take in the stunning views. Many jungle hotels also offer spa treatments that use natural ingredients sourced from the surrounding jungle, providing a truly unique and luxurious experience.
Staying in a Bali jungle hotel is the perfect way to escape the stresses of daily life and fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty and culture of Bali. What are Bali jungle hotels like?
Bali jungle hotels tend to be situated in remote locations around Bali. The hills north of Ubud and also the hills in the far north of Bali are the best areas for Bali jungle hotels. Due to the remote locations we recommend that you see your stay as an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the hotel. Don’t try to pack too much in, or try to see everything in the area. Rather, we recommend slowing down and relaxing in the hotel and then planning additional time to see local attractions before or after your stay.
Bali jungle hotels are often very innovative, luxurious & beautiful. Many of the jungle hotels in Bali offer creative Balinese design & artwork. They often feature amazing facilities like jungle infinity pools, outdoor terrace areas, outdoor bathtubs and jacuzzis. Many jungle hotels in Bali are situated on jungle mountains with amazing views or on the edge of deep jungle valleys.
Many Bali jungle hotels also offer fantastic amenities such as spas, on site restaurants and bars. The staff tend to be excellent – Balinese people are known for their warm hospitality, and this adds to the amazing experience of staying in a jungle hotel in Bali.
What are the challenges of staying at Bali jungle hotels?
We already mentioned the remote location of many of these hotels. This can make it challenging to access your hotel. Read on to find out the best ways to get to your hotel. It is worth knowing that you will probably need to get food and drinks from your hotel. The remote location of these hotels means that you won’t be able to stroll out to grab food or go to the shops. So we recommend making sure that the hotel will be able to meet your needs in terms of food and facilities.
In general, Bali jungle hotels offer an immersive natural experience whilst also maintaining a high level of comfort and luxury. However, Bali being a tropical climate, you need to be prepared that you may see insects around. Even in the most luxurious properties it is hard to keep everything away. Most of these jungle hotels offer things like mosquito repellant and mosquito coils.
How do you prepare to visit Bali jungle hotels
Here is a checklist to help you prepare for your stay in a jungle hotel in Bali:
- Book your room, pay extra for free cancellation if you think your trip may need to be canceled.
- Contact the hotel with any additional requests (late check in, additional bed, cots or transport requests)
- Arrange your transport (either use hotel pick up, bike rental , car rental or Grab taxis )
- Check food and drinks on the resort
- Buy things that you might need for your trip (snacks, medicines or specialist things like baby milk or nappies if you’re traveling with kids)
- Pack things like mosquito repellant, sun cream, long sleeve tops and trousers to enjoy the outdoors in the evening. Don’t forget your swimming kit if your hotel has a pool.
When is the best time to visit Bali jungle hotels ?
The best time of year to visit a Bali jungle hotel is during the dry season, which runs from April to September. During this time, the weather is warm and dry, with plenty of sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the natural beauty of the jungle.
The rainy season in Bali runs from October to March, and while it can still be a great time to visit, the heavy rains and humidity can make it difficult to fully enjoy outdoor activities. The rain can also make some of the roads to the more remote jungle hotels difficult to navigate.
That being said, Bali jungle hotels can be a great destination any time of year. The rainforest is beautiful and lush year-round, and the unique flora and fauna of the jungle can be experienced at any time. Additionally, visiting during the off-season can often mean lower prices and fewer crowds, providing a more authentic and peaceful experience.
How do you access Bali jungle hotels
Bali jungle hotels tend to be in quite remote locations and can be tricky to access. Here are the best ways to get to your Bali jungle hotel:
1 Motorbike rental
Rent a motorbike in Bali – this is a cheap and fun way to get around! Having your own wheels allow you the freedom to explore the area around your hotel. Come and go as you please and when you please. Also you don’t need to arrange bike rental in advance. Just rock up, rent your bike from a rental shop (there are plenty around) and off you go. It generally costs around 100,000IDR – 200,000IDR per day to rent a bike in Bali (roughly £5 – £10 or $6 – $12). Always wear a hamlet and ride with care. Be aware that some of the hills can be steep and challenging for motorbikes. Always head out with a full tank of petrol!
2 Car rental
Rent a car – many of the advantages of bike rental but the comfort of a larger vehicle with space for bags. Car rental is a great way to get to your hotel. The cheapest way to rent a car in Bali is to work out a great deal with a local rental company. Expect to pay around 200,000IDR – 400,000IDR per day for car rental in Bali if you rent locally (roughly £10 – £20 or $12 – $24 per day). You can get better deals for longer rentals.
3 Local taxis
Use a taxi – the best way to get a taxi in Bali is use the Grab app. Buy a local sim card with data and download the app. Register for an account using your local number and your away. You can book taxis online and you will always be told the price before you book. Grab drivers are quite responsive in Bali. Expect to pay 60,000IDR – 800,000IDR for a taxi ride in Bali depending on the distance (roughly £3 – £40 or $4 – $50).

4 Hotel pick up services
Ask your hotel to arrange a pick up service: Many jungle hotels in Bali have their own transport services. They can often arrange pick ups and drop offs if you give advance notice. The interior of Bali, away from the beaches on the coast, has some of the most stunning hotels in the world. Dotted between the verdant rice fields and palm trees, these jungle hotels and villas spread up majestic hillsides. The luxurious properties are built between and upon these hills, which means that some offer breathtaking views, while others are cosseted in the lush jungle foliage. Many offer private pools and the best offer exclusivity that you won’t find on the coast.
Sungai Jungle Villas Bali is an ultra-luxurious hideaway cocooned in the Balinese jungle. It offers all the privacy of a private villa with all the convenience and impeccable service of a five-star resort.
Located riverside in a traditional village in southwestern Bali, nearby the hotspot of beachside Canggu, enjoy exquisite cuisine, flawless service, and deep pampering. This holiday heaven comprises two luxury 3-bedroom villas surrounded by rice paddies, palms, and jungle views. With many awards accrued over the years, including The World’s Top 5 Luxury Villas, the villas cater for 2-12 special guests. Couples enjoy exclusivity in either villa, and family groups can take over both villas for the ultimate glam experience.
Get away from it all amid the peace and tranquillity of local country life. With beaches, bustling towns, and many other attractions just a short drive away, not to mention a dedicated chauffeur-driven car to ferry you around, this is one travel destination that really does seem to have it all.
Furnished and decorated in Balinese/French Colonial style, the accommodation is beautiful with an emphasis on high-end finishes, which include four-poster beds and infinity pools. Ensuite bathrooms feature tropical open-air showers and luxury Swiss Chopard and bespoke natural toiletries. Bathrobes, spa gowns, slippers, and salon-quality hair dryers are all provided, as are GHD hair straighteners upon request.
The sleeping and living quarters’ style is bright, white, and minimal with a luxurious twist, allowing the beauty of the outdoor environment to take center stage. Roofs are thatched in the traditional Balinese style, while floors are stone. Sofas are upholstered in natural khaki. Guests enjoy 24-hour butler service, complimentary laundry service, and a chauffeur-driven car.
After optional private fast-track airport service, you will be delivered to the Sungai Guest Services Manager, who will welcome you with a glass of chilled wine or local beer and snack prior to whisking you to the villas where guests are greeted with a signature mocktail and home-made cheese biscuits. Extravagant continental breakfasts are included in the tariff, as is unlimited chilled bottled water and laundry/pressing. With bar staff offering an exciting range of holiday cocktails and wines and tempting creations such as Balinese lamb stew and tempura fish with Thai herb salad on the menu, it’s easy to see why guests at Sungai Jungle Villas Bali opt to eat in most of the time.
Both villas have their own beautiful horizon pools, edged by lush foliage. Spa treatments are available either poolside or in an air-conditioned treatment room. Massages, skin treatments, and traditional Balinese healing rituals are all on offer, as are yoga and Pilates classes, all within the comfort of your own villa.
With a whole host of provisions on offer for children, from cots for babies to a five-page children’s menu, books, and toys, the youngest family members are also most definitely catered for at Sungai Jungle Villas Bali.
The villas are renowned for their intuitive and attentive staff who look after your every need, from previously mentioned airport transfers and preparing and cooking meals to taking care of the little ones and organizing excursions. By the end of your time at Sungai Jungle Villas Bali, you should feel that you are staying among friends in a luxurious home away from home!
Nestled in the heart of lush green forests, Capella Ubud tented camp sits in harmony with the surrounding nature. Inspired by the early European settlers from the 1800s, architect Bill Bensley designed Capella Ubud, Bali, as a tribute to their spirit of adventure.
Capella Ubud, Bali, is set within a dramatic terraced landscape, with prominent rice paddies surrounding the entrance, leading through a densely forested valley that drops down to the sacred Wos River.
No tree was cut during construction, so this refined jungle camp remains a hidden sanctuary underneath a canopy of leaves. Within the camp are twenty-two one-bedroom tents and one two-bedroom lodge, all with private saltwater pools. The camp is adorned with handpicked valuable antique art objects, books, paintings, drawings, and furniture, some of which are from the owner’s treasured private collection.
Food & Beverage selections include Mads Lange, the camp’s dining room, Api Jiwa, an intimate and highly interactive Asian barbecue, and The Mortar and Pestle pool bar. The Camp Fire is not merely the place to meet the local storyteller over pulled hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows but, weather permitting, an equally great venue for casual dining.
The tented gymnasium is for guests who wish to work out in style and yoga and Pilates by design, whilst an invigorating weekly schedule, with a diverse range of low and high impact camp activities, further compliment your exercise regime.
Adventure wellness, pampering spa treatments designed around the moon phases, spiritual and sound healing, as well as in-retreat rituals, are on offer at Auriga Wellness.
The Officers Tent, exclusive to Capella Ubud guests, Bali is the camp’s living room where morning coffee, afternoon tea, and the daily evening cocktail and canapé ritual are served. The unobtrusive and highly personalized services of a dedicated Capella Culturist further complement your stay.
This is the second Four Seasons hotel on the island of Bali and has a much more spiritual vibe than the beach fronted Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay. Four Seasons Resort Bali At Sayan , hidden in the mists of the jungle, is terribly romantic. Fewer families are attracted to this resort due to its lack of a beach.
Voted #1 hotel in the world by Travel + Leisure in 2018, Four Seasons Resort Sayan encapsulates Bali at its philosophical and soulful best. The hotel is only a ten-minute drive from the stylish boutiques, artist ateliers, and atmospheric eateries of boho-chic Ubud, making Four Seasons Sayan an inspiring base to explore Bali’s cultural heart or to retreat into nature’s meditative embrace.
The Four Seasons Sayan is a tranquil retreat tucked away amongst the lush jungle greenery on the banks of the Ayung River, which flows through a river valley in the heart of Ubud. Guests arrive via a dramatic bridge at tree level, beneath which the Ayung River valley spreads its tropical arms.
From the gravity-defying rooftop lotus pond that seems to float, suspended above the canopy, the hotel cascades down the hill to the two-tiered swimming pool and through an enchanting forest that cocoons just 60 suites and villas with stunning rice paddy and jungle views.
Rooms are built from local timber and thatched Alang-Alang roofs and vary from suites for two tucked in the jungle to the two-bedroom river view villas or the Royal Villa, with incredible views of the tumbling Ayung River and lush green surrounds.
The traditional and tranquil spa is perfect for a relaxing massage after exploring Ubud. Particularly special are the signature treatments designed to balance the body’s chakras.
Wherever you are in the world, Four Seasons hotels are consistently one of the best hotels or resorts in the area. They don’t have a Four Seasons loyalty program , so you will never be able to book a free stay by racking up and redeeming points or by collecting points on your credit card and spending them at a Four Seasons hotel. It can’t be done. But you can get discounts at Four Seasons hotels and benefit from special rewards at Four Seasons hotels for no extra cost by booking your next stay via our luxury travel concierge .
For thousands of years, the mandapas, Sanskrit for temples, of Ubud have offered devotees a sacred space to rest their mind, body, and soul. Guests today will find a similar escape at Mandapa, a Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Bali , a secluded paradise where lush jungle grows over rolling hills, the Ayung River gurgles, and verdant rice paddies create a unique sense of place.
A traditional Balinese gong marks your arrival at this five-star hotel, followed by a refreshing local drink full of goodness and infused with indigenous herbs. Your personal butler, who will remain at your service throughout your stay, will escort you to your villa or suite, one of only 60 available at this intimate property.
Luxury accommodations feature a private outdoor space with views of the river or surrounding scenery, including the lime green rice paddies surrounding Mandapa. Four restaurants serve health-conscious cuisine sourced from the organic garden; arrange a romantic dinner overlooking the river or rice terrace. The spa offers a variety of programs focused on physical and spiritual well-being.
Amandari (which means “peaceful spirits”) is located in the jungle of central Bali. Designed as a Balinese village, Amandari has river-stone walkways and high paras-stone walls. The open-air lobby was designed after a village meeting place.
The pathway that runs through Amandari and down the valley to the river below is sacred land. For hundreds of years, Balinese have taken the path down to a pool of holy water. Just above this spring-fed pool sit three modest shrines and an ancient tiger carved into the rock.
Balinese-style stone gateways front Amandari’s 30 walled, thatched-roof suites, each with a private garden courtyard and some with private pools. Each is a charming oasis of handwoven batiks, sliding-glass doors opening on three sides, and an outdoor, sunken marble bathtub. The duplex rooms boast romantic four-poster beds. From here, take in the resplendent, far-reaching views of the rice terraces and lush countryside.
The Restaurant is open to the breezes and is crafted largely of teak wood. It overlooks Amandari’s swimming pool and the gorge. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and specializes in Western and local Indonesian dishes. The Bar, with its terrace seating, features a wide selection of drinks.
Facilities include the Library, with a broad selection of books, newspapers, CDs, and games, a fitness center fitted with a fully equipped cardiovascular gym, and a signature 32m green-tiled swimming pool, lying close to the lip of the gorge. There’s also a gallery and Amandari’s Spa, surrounded by water and featuring two open-air massage bales, a beauty room, a sauna, and a steam room.
The Purist Villas & Spa is a beautiful, luxury boutique resort surrounded by rice fields and jungle.
The Purist Villas & Spa features a beautiful pool surrounded by sun loungers and beds, while Purist Spa can be found on an elevated floor, just a few steps above the emerald swimming pool. The spa offers a selection of signature massages featuring South East Asia’s most trusted techniques, provided by highly trained professionals. The Purist Villas yoga sessions are available in all disciplines and designed to release anxiety and calm the mind with happiness, peace, and tranquility.
In terms of dining, Café Balisimo presents a range of seasonal menus based on nutritious, minimally processed ingredients and the best available fresh products. It also serves complimentary afternoon teas every day, and outside of mealtimes, guests can enjoy healthy Balinese and other Asian tapas and sip cocktails at the main pool outdoor lounge.
The multi-award-winning 5 Star Viceroy Bali is one of the best luxury hotels in the jungles of Bali. It is just 5 minutes drive to Ubud’s thriving culture and arts center, yet the location feels like another world.
Wandering into the hotel’s open lobby with its marble floor and high-vaulted bamboo and grass-thatched roof immediately washes away any stresses. A water feature trickles nearby, down a grand staircase, and the resort opens up into a compact, cool sanctuary clinging to the side of the strikingly verdant Valley of the Kings.
With only 25 pool villas, Viceroy Bali offers absolute privacy for those seeking elegant travel. A soft, artfully manicured garden rolls gently off to the side of the main infinity-edged pool overlooking the jungle valley opposite.
Nearby, a path leads down to CasCades restaurant, the resort’s beating heart with its 10-meter cone-shaped grass thatched roof. The perfect setting for a romantic or special occasion, the restaurant offers world-class dining using only the freshest and highest quality international and local produce.
Each of the spacious 25 villas is exquisitely furnished and exceedingly private. Moreover, each villa has its own heated pool, outdoor cabana, and unrivaled views of the surrounding valley and dense jungle. Adding to the serenity, the constant calm, cool sound of the rolling river rises from the valley ravine as guests sit on their private terraces and relax.
COMO Shambhala Estate is a true ‘Retreat for Change’ with resident experts including a yoga teacher, a Pilates teacher, an Ayurveda consultant, and Oriental medicine expert.
Picture serenity in the jungle, and it’s likely you’ll imagine COMO Shambhala Estate. Set deep within the lush Balinese forest overlooking the Ayung River, this “retreat for change” offers a life perspective as tranquil as the waters below.
Five multi-suite residences are themed after nature’s elements, with a variety of private villas for a sense of oneness with the pristine setting. Each features butler service and an infinity swimming pool. Enjoy healthful and energizing COMO Shambhala cuisine and the aid of professional nutritionists; de-stress in the springs and the holistic spa; and renew with renowned healers, yoga masters, and life coaches.
Alila Ubud is a tranquil and secluded hillside retreat that sits high up on the edge of the rich green Ayung River valley in Bali’s jungle covered foothills.
The hotel has been laid out as a Balinese hillside village complete with its own community center and pedestrian lanes. The resort’s rooms and villas stand above a ravine on stilts like treehouses and are set into the banks of the river valley.
Here, smooth plaster walls and concrete meet thatched roofs; terrazzo tiles meet gravel or crushed rock; wood meets glass, making for one of the most uniquely designed boutique hotels Ubud has seen. The property features a world-class restaurant and a holistic and intuitive spa facility.
Hidden among the lush undulating hills of Bali’s culture-rich highlands, Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana sits among thriving rice fields that are edged by jungle and just outside the artists’ village of Ubud. This artistic luxury resort in Ubud was formerly The Chedi Club Tanah Gajah and is an intimate retreat with twenty individual villas set amongst more than 12 acres of emerald green rice paddies.
The two-villa sanctuary Duadari, a Residence by Hadiprana, was originally designed as a spacious family holiday home, resulting in a low number of rooms spread over the two-hectare grounds. The location and design lend themselves to distancing from the crowds. The interiors blend harmoniously into the landscapes, and each villa has its own butler to help with everything from unpacking to poolside pampering. Those seeking serenity and rejuvenation will find both in abundance at The Spa, nestled at one edge of the seemingly endless paddy fields.

BALI JUNGLE CAMPING (2021 Review) – A Unique Glamping Experience
I had the opportunity recently to visit Bali Jungle Camping in the mountains of Tabanan, Bali. I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised! From the Jungle/Plantation covered grounds, to the amazingly well equipped Dome Tents and ensuites, this place was truly built to impress!
There are many places in Bali that claim to cater to the “Glamping” revolution. I have been to some of these and while they are impressive, Bali Jungle Camping is the first place I have seen that is so far removed from “civilization”. Being in the middle of the mountains in one of the highest spots in Tabanan, this Glamping experience is one that you just have to try.

How to get to Bali Jungle Camping
Getting to Bali Jungle Camping is a 2 hour ride that I really enjoyed. I pride myself on having been all over Bali, but the road up from the Tabanan coastline towards the high village of Pupuan was one that I had never actually ridden before. In the end I enjoyed it so much that I have vowed to head back and do it again in a couple of months.
If you are coming from Kuta, set your gps for this location . The road will take you through the outskirts of Denpasar to Mengwi, which has become known to me as a central hub for so many places I love to visit in Bali. Instead of my normal turn north toward Bedugul, the road led me west toward Gilimanuk. About 20km along the road in the village of Badjera the road will turn sharply south toward the coast. We, however, will turn right and head directly north toward Pupuan.
Along this road, be ready with your camera. I was very surprised by how beautiful it is, in particular the rice paddies. If you have been to Tegalalang then you will have seen the amazing steep rice terraces. At Jatiluwih you will have seen the miles of green carpet as the Paddies stretch on forever. In Tabanan, the rice paddies have a perfect mixture of both those places, and in my view are some of the most beautiful in Bali.
Keep heading up the road until you begin to truly reach mountains. The road will twist and turn through rainforest and jungle, and you will see the obligatory monkeys that seem to be everywhere in Bali. Keep an eye on the GPS, however, because there is a turnoff coming up toward the village of Padangan where Bali Jungle Camping makes its home.
Once you arrive, if you are on scooter you can actually ride all the way in and park near the front lobby. If you are in a car, you can park in a designated parking area and call the hostess Wayan who will come out to pick you up.
What to expect at Bali Jungle Camping
When you first walk into Bali Jungle Camping, you will arrive at their lobby/restaurant area. The first thing that will strike you is how rustic it looks, which is almost perfect for the jungle setting. Old window shutters, rubbed back to bare wood are formed into a solid wall that lines two sides of the main structure, and the furnishing inside is perfectly matched. Everything from the old clock on the wall to the desk used for check in seems to have been meticulously chosen to fit the decor, and they have done it perfectly.
From the dining area there is a small wooden walkway that opens immediately onto a large wooden deck that opens out over coffee plantation, mango and durian trees. The view is beautiful and creates that ambience that most visitors will have come there seeking. Order a coffee, and while you are checking in, sit and enjoy your first taste of the peace and quiet that you will see plenty of over your stay.
The Accomodation
During my own stay, we were fortunate enough to have one of the Dome Geo Tents. These are absolutely amazing, and in my opinion, if you are coming to Bali Jungle Camping and want to get the full experience, then this is the only way to do it.
The Tents are, as you would expect, a Dome shape. They are solid and strong, completely waterproof, and nothing short of a tornado would ever move them! They are perched on a high deck, well above the jungle floor and the critters and plants below. Inside, they have a King size bed with beautiful, clean and warm white sheets and doona, a large fan that blows out so much air on the first setting that I could not imagine why you would need the others, two bedside tables, a chair and several electrical power outlets. All in all, the tent has everything you need for a comfortable stay.
Outside of the tent there is a nice size awning that covers half of the deck the tent is perched on. There is a large daybed, wash stand with mirror and sink, and a fully enclosed ensuite with shower and toilet. The gas hot water system also provides piping hot water! Just what is needed in the middle of a jungle.
If you do not want to try a tent, there are also several strong wooden cabins available. All have plenty of space, the same beautiful beds and bedding, with ensuite bathrooms. You can’t go wrong really, and for families, this is probably the better option.
The Facilities
I have already talked about the ensuites and the facilities available in the tents and cabins. To be honest, I was actually surprised at the availability of electricity in such a remote location. But, it is strong and reliable, so there i are no problems there. Hot water is the same, and you should never have an issue.
The one thing we found lacking was WIFI. Now, if you are after a Glamping experience that gets you away from it all, then this is probably perfect. We actually enjoyed being in the Jungle and being unattached from our phones during our stay. Even for a Digital Nomad. There IS WIFI in the restaurant/lobby area, but we found it to be rather slow, even after a couple of reboots. Hopefully this will improve in the future, but even for us we didn’t find it a big problem. We were able to check our social media, chat to a few friends, then unplug again as we settled in for the night. There WAS a little bit of 4g in our tent, but it was sporadic at best and better in the morning than at night time. This will probably improve in the future as well as the networks in Bali are constantly being upgraded.
If you take a walk around the complex, you will find little paths that head off into the jungle and plantations that are interesting to follow. Along the way you will find small grassy lawns for picnics, bridges made out of bamboo, hammocks in trees and even a small hut beside a stream with a massage table. This looked to us to be the perfect place to have a massage in complete seclusion, with the peaceful babbling of the stream right beside you.
Bali Jungle Camping Activities
There is a lot on offer at Bali Jungle Camping as far as activities go. As you would expect, most of these revolve around the jungle, trekking and hiking.
We chose a trip to nearby Blahmantung Waterfall, which is the highest waterfall in Bali, and one of the very few that we had not actually been to already. The staff surprised us with a picnic lunch all laid out at the base of the waterfall as well. This was something that we have never had before. Normally we make our own way to waterfalls , and this was the very first time we have ever had a guide, let alone staff to pamper us!
Among other treks, they also offer hikes around the local area, the jungle, and through the local village of Padangan. This village and the villagers are beautiful, and the local coffee they produce is probably one of the best I have tasted in Bali. Give it a try!
If you are after something a bit more challenging, then take them up on the 9 hour trek to the top of Mount Batu Karu. This is the large mountain you will have seen over toward the East. It is the second highest mountain in Bali, behind only Mount Agung , and is a very interesting trek. Just make sure you have the right shoes and clothing for a hike such as this one.
For those that want something a little more sedate, then try the cooking class. This will involve you waking early and visiting the local morning Pasar in Padangan Village to buy ingredients, and then later in the morning cooking up a storm with the host Wayan. The lunch that you sit down to at the end is amazing!
For anyone that is looking for a getaway experience whilst in Bali, then give Bali Jungle Camping a try. This is a Glamping experience that is one of a kind. You have to go a bit further than somewhere like Ubud , but you also get a lot better experience. And I can guarantee that none of your friends will have done it either!

Bali is an idyllic island with a name so famous that many people often think that Bali is a country. It’s actually one of many islands that make up the incredibly diverse country of Indonesia and acts as a great jumping-off point for further travels to Lombok and Flores .
Bali is by far the most popular island, and where I called home multiple times during my travels. drawing The beaches, iconic rice terraces, jungle-covered volcanos, unique culture and heartwarming people are just a few of the Island of Gods perks.
Whether you’re a luxury traveler or a backpacker, this Bali itinerary guide will serve you well. I’ve detailed multiple options for you to pick and choose what serves your Bali vacation best. There’s no one-itinerary-fits-all here.
Planning a trip to Bali can be really daunting as there’s no set route or place or place to start. This Bali travel guide will tell you what to do in Bali, the places you must visit in Bali and the top things to do in Bali. It’s the ultimate Bali trip planner from someone who knows Bali well.

Bali Itinerary
Creating a Bali itinerary can be very difficult because it really depends on what a person is looking for. Below I’ve created mini itineraries for each place recommending how long to stay and the top things to do. Unfortunately, there is no best itinerary for Bali as it really depends on what you want to do.
Bali Trip Itineraries by Length
Follow the order that each itinerary is listed in and you’ll have yourself a route! These itineraries move at a decent place so if you plan on relaxing more then drop one of the locations. If you want an itinerary for 4-5 days I recommend picking one or two spots maximum.
7 Day Itinerary
- Ubud (2 days)
- Uluwatu (2 days)
- Canggu (2 days)
- Nusa Penida (day trip)
10 Day Itinerary
- Ubud (3 days)
- Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan & Nusa Penida (3 days)
2 Week Itinerary
- Seminyak (1 day)
- Amed (day trip from Ubud)
- Gili Islands (2 days)
- Nusa Islands (3 days)
3 Week Itinerary
- Seminyak (2 days)
- Munduk (2 days)
- Lovina (2 days)
- Amed (2 days)
- Extra day to spend wherever you like!
Breakdown of my Bali Trip Itinerary
Ubud: 3-4 Days
Though easily a week could be spent in Ubud if you love wandering around, this cultural hub can be fully explored in just 3-4 days. Ubud is where you’ll do most of your Bali sightseeing.
DAY ONE: Spend the day exploring around town. Hit up the Monkey Forest and make your way up Monkey Forest Road (watching out for the monkeys of course) where you can poke in and out of shops full of jewelry, souvenirs, local art and more. By the end of the road you’ll hit the Ubud Market where you can easily spend an hour or more.
After the market make sure you make it over to the Campuhan Ridge Walk for sunset over the green fields. Grab some food, there are lots of options nearby and head back to your accommodation.
DAY TWO: Today is full of temple hopping and some waterfalls. Hire yourself a scooter, get a driver or do a tour. The first stop before it gets busy is Tirta Empul where you’ll get into the water and bless yourself under the holy water. Gunung Kawi is close by and is very Balinese with beautiful rice terraces surrounding it. Next are the stunning and most famous rice terraces on the island, Tegallalang Rice Terraces where you can spend some time taking pictures and trekking through the terraces.
After, make your way to Tibumana Waterfall, a pretty but simple waterfall that is easy to get to but not very touristy. The next waterfall, Tegenungan Waterfall, is big and powerful but touristy. On your way back to Ubud stop at Goa Gajah, also known as the Elephant Cave, another temple which I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of before.
DAY THREE: Day three is the day to spoil yourself. Get yourself into a spa where the low prices will have you getting multiple treatments. Indulge in a yoga class. The most famous yoga studio in all of Bali is located in Ubud, the Yoga Barn. I can vouch that the classes and spaces are excellent! In the morning or afternoon squeeze in a cooking class so you can try multiple dishes from traditional Balinese cuisine.
DAY FOUR: Get up early and hike Mount Batur for sunrise . The second half of the day is either for sleeping or getting in some extra sightseeing. Some suggestions are visiting the Bali swing, stuffing your face with more great food, visiting the Bamboo Forest which is excellent for Instagram-worthy shots or watching a traditional Balinese dance.

Canggu: 2-3 Days
Canggu is a major chill out zone but it is easy to get caught here, there’s just something about the place that makes people want to stay longer.
DAY ONE: Do what Canggu is best known for, hang out on the beach. If you can’t sit all day then catch a surf lesson or hit up a yoga class. Spend your evening at Old’s Man, the main bar in town or party at one of the nightly hot spots. Make sure you catch sunset on the beach. Most hostels will have a schedule up of when to go to Pretty Poison, Sand Bar and more for the best party.
DAY TWO: Hit up the beach again or check out a beach club where you can live a little luxury without spending a fortune. Eat at some of the best spots in the area (the food here seriously does not disappoint) and do a mini shopping trip at the Love Anchor Market. For sunset visit the famous Tanah Lot just outside of Canggu, but we warned it will be busy. Then catch sunset on the beach.
DAY THREE: Another day to relax, do another surf or yoga lesson and party. Find yourself on a rooftop pool, at a spa or back at the beach. Don’t forget to catch sunset again, Canggu seriously has the best sunsets!

Seminyak: 1-2 Days
If you’re not planning a relaxing holiday for a week then I would move through Seminyak quickly as the luxe lifestyle here has prices that add up quickly.
DAY ONE: Today is a fun day, basically spend your time eating your through Seminyak at all of the trendy cafes and drinking at the stylish bars. Check out Bali’s very first speakeasy bar, Baker Street Social. But if you don’t just want to eat all day (who doesn’t?) then chill out with some massages. At night you can party at Sky Garden that’s open until 5AM and is often host to world famous DJ’s.
DAY TWO: Hit the beach or a beach club. Potato Head is one of Bali’s most famous beach clubs and it is fabulous. If you’re at the beach you can try your hand at a surfing lesson. If you need some more activities while in Seminyak then try a little retail therapy or visit the escape room or Museum Art Trick 3D. End your night at another hot spot to party at and don’t forget to enjoy a beautiful sunset on the beach!
READ MORE: 13 of the Finest Things to do in Seminyak & Where to Stay in Seminyak
Bukit Peninsula (Uluwatu): 2 Days
DAY ONE: There is nothing better to do in Uluwatu than beach hop . You have so many choices, the most famous ones being Dreamland Beach, Padang Padang Beach (where a scene from Eat, Pray, Love was filmed and also some of the best parties) and Uluwatu Beach. However, my personal favourite is Melasti Beach and Nyang Nyang Beach is also awesome. Spend your evening at one of the most famous Bali attractions: Uluwatu Temple where you can see the sunset as you watch a Kecak dance, otherwise known a as a fire dance. Beware of the monkeys here.
DAY TWO: Get active and get surfing or spend another day beach hopping. If you happen to be in Uluwatu on a Sunday then don’t miss the party at Single Fin. Even if you’re not here on a Sunday it’s worth a visit to Single Fin to watch sunset or to see the surfers during the day on the epic waves. There are also lots of pools that you can hang out at if you buy something or pay an entrance fee.

Nusa Dua: 2-3 Days
If you’re up for a quick visit as a globetrotter, 3 days is plenty, but this little paradise could easily be where to stay for a week if you want more of a holiday.
DAY ONE: Visit the beaches where you can also eat and drink. The top ones to check out are Nusa Dua Beach and Geger Beach. Off of Nusa Dua Beach is a great snorkelling spot. Another water activity is witnessing the water blow, where water literally blows from a rock formation. In the evening you can catch a Cirque d’Soilel like show at Devdan Show .
DAY TWO: Day two is for exploring. If you’re a shopping lover than stop at Bali Collection for a mix of stores. If you like culture then visit Puja Mandala, a religious monument with temples, mosques and more. Or if you want to be active then join a cycling tour. In the evening you can stroll along the Nusa Dua Promenade.
DAY THREE: Feel like a real-life pirate and visit Pirates’ Bay, get back into the water for some water sports such as jet skiing and parasailing. Nusa Dua is full of entertainment! Lastly, you can check out the Surf n’ Turf park that has practice waves and instructors waiting for you.
READ MORE: 15 Awesome Things to do in Nusa Dua & Where to Stay in Nusa Dua
Nusa Islands: 1-5 Days
This group of three islands are absolutely stunning. Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan can be visited as day trips or you can choose to spend time on each island. I recommend spending more time on Nusa Penida (2-3 days) and less on Nusa Lembongan (1-2). Nusa Ceningan is so small it can be visited as part of your time on Nusa Lembongan as it’s connected by a yellow bridge which is a short walk or drive.
I have detailed itineraries for each island:
- Nusa Lembongan (most visited)
- Nusa Ceningan (smallest)
- Nuda Penida (largest and most scenic)
Kuta: 1-2 Days
Kuta is a love or hate kind of place. You either want to spend some time here or avoid it like the plague.
DAY ONE: If you want some water entertainment for the day that doesn’t involve a beach then make your way to Waterbom Bali or Circus Waterpark. If that’s too western for you then head to Kuta Beach where you can also catch one of Bali’s best sunsets.
DAY TWO: Day two is another day packed with entertainment. You have the option to visit Kuta Theater which has a magic show, Dream Museum Zone which has immersive life scale paintings, try the 5GX “reverse bungee’, get your surf on at Amanda Flow House, Upside Down World Bali (self-explanatory, I think), or Pandora Experience Bali.
READ MORE: 11 Entertaining Things to do in Kuta & Where to Stay in Kuta
Munduk: 2-3 Days
Munduk is great to do as a couple day trip from Ubud or as a trip from Canggu to Ubud. There is a lot of driving involved but the scenery is beautiful! Grab a bike or a private driver and you’ll love the nature here.
DAY ONE: You’ll spend a good chunk of today driving to the Munduk area but once there you can stop at some stunning waterfalls such as Munduk Waterfall, Gitgit Waterfall, Aling-Aling Waterfall, Banyumala Waterfall (if you only visit one, make it this one!) and Melating Waterfall. Spend the night in Munduk, trust me you’ll be tired.
DAY TWO: If you choose to spend 3 days exploring Munduk then this is your hiking day. Get up early before the clouds roll in to see the epic views over the rolling hills and mountains. Guided tours are available.
DAY THREE: This is the day you head back to Ubud or move onto Ubud from Canggu. Get up early again so you can get to the hot spots before the crowds appear. Stop at the Twin Lake Wanagiri Spot (that’s the name on Google Maps) for an Instagram heaven with a swing that has a view over one of the lakes.
Next visit some beautiful gates that are really only gates to a golf course (Handara Golf & Resort Bali). They’re still awesome though. Lastly, stop at one of the most famous temples on the island, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple that sits along a lake with the mountains in the background. There are also lots of viewpoints to stop at along the drive through the lakes.

Amed: 2 Days
Your time in Amed really varies depending on what you want to do. If you’re not diving then 2 days in fine to explore the basics, but if you want to spend more time in the water then budget time accordingly. You can also get scuba certified here.
DAY ONE: Amed is small to explore so spend the day in the water or along the beach. Go snorkeling or free dive at the top sites. Chill out on the beach, pop your head into the few shops or enjoy some yoga. In the evening make your way to the best viewpoint in town, Jemeluk viewpoint for sunset and a tasty dinner or a few drinks.
DAY TWO: Day two involves a mini day trip to the most Instagramable spot on the entire island: Lempuyang Luhur Temple . It’s famous for having the ‘Gates to Heaven’ that frames Mount Agung, Bali’s tallest volcano, in the background. It will take about half the day and the second half you can do activities from day one that didn’t get to.
Lovina: 1-2 Days
Lovina is worth a quick visit or can even be worked in as a stop on a trip to Munduk.
DAY ONE: Hangout on the black sand beach. Visit any waterfalls between Lovina and Munduk and hop into the freshwater springs or the Banjar hot springs…or both!
DAY TWO: Go on a dolphin spotting tour , take a cooking class, visit Brahmavihara (a Buddhist temple) or spend even more time on the beach.
Best Time to Visit Bali
While Bali can be visit year-round there is definitely a best time to travel to Bali . Bali experiences only two seasons: wet season and dry season. The wet season, November to March, brings heavy rains but it never rains all day, mostly just showers for an hour or two during the day. The dry season, April to October has some rain but it is minimal and it is not uncommon to have dry days for weeks.
The temperature is consistent year-round with temperatures reaching as low as 23°C and highs of 34°C.
The busiest time of the year to visit in July and August so if you want to avoid crowds then the best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons April-June and September-October. It’s a treat to visit in the spring as it’s just after the wet seasons has finished and the island is covered in lush greenery.
Bali Trip Budget
Bali can be a budget destination or it can be a luxury destination. The island has it all and you can choose how much money you want to spend. Though I found it slightly more expensive than other countries in Southeast Asia , I found Bali to be very flexible when it came to budgeting for accommodation, food and transport.
If you want to be tight $25USD day will get you by no problem but if you’re looking to be on a budget but with some wiggle room plan for $35-45USD a day. This is if you’re staying in hostels (100,000-150,000 a night), eating local food (15,000-50,000 per meal) and using budget apps to find transport which varies widely. Activities will fit into this budget but not daily.
If you want to live more comfortably, perhaps staying in a guesthouse, a cheap villa or hotel plan to spend $60-100USD per day. Accommodation in this range will cost you 300,000-600,000 per night.
On this budget you can eat all western food and enjoy the fancier restaurants with meals ranging from 100,000-350,000. Cocktails will run you anywhere from 70,000-200,000. You can also afford to take taxis or hire private drivers. You can also afford to do activities daily.
Activities range but typically cost between 100,000-300,000 with some costing more or else. Entering a temple is anywhere between 15,000-60,000, a yoga class is 100,000-130,000, a cooking class 300,000 and hiking Mount Batur 300,000.
Anything above $100USD a day you’ll be able to stay in hotels, resorts and enjoy the totally luxe things on the island. Though know that Bali is home to some of the most expensive hotels in the world!
How to Get to Bali
There are 3 ways to get to Bali: plane, boat and bus. The most popular way to get to Bali is by plane, flying into the Ngurah Rai International Airport or Denpasar International Airport. There is one Bali airport (two names) that serves Bali and is located in Denpasar.
By boat is also an option with the most common route being from Java, which is a common way for travellers to travel between the two major islands. Lastly, you can take the bus from Java’s capital of Jakarta which takes 23 hours.
Travelling Around Bali
Getting around Bali is easy and you have a few options. Unfortunately, there is no public transport in Bali so you will have to rely on private drivers and apps to find you drivers or drive a scooter.
Luckily it never takes more than 2 hours to get between destinations unless you are planning on travelling far across the island which shouldn’t be the case as there is plenty to see and you’ll want to make stops and stay in more than one or two areas.
To get from the Bali airport to where you are staying
It is best to have a transfer booked ahead of time before you get to Bali. Private airport transfers are very affordable which can be booked online. Many accommodations also offer transfers too.
To get from destination to destination
The cheapest way to move between different areas is to hire a Grab, Uber or Go-Jek (the Indonesian version of Grab/Uber). A price will be shown, however, drivers will always try and negotiate. This is normal so get your bargaining skills ready.
I recommend booking private drivers between destinations which are very affordable and less of a hassle.
The most expensive way is to hire a taxi, Blue Bird taxis are the main and trusted taxi company. Of course, if you’re comfortable driving a scooter with your baggage then you can hire a scooter and drive wherever you please.
There are some shuttles available, mostly from Ubud that are a cheaper shared option. If you’re taking a boat to the Nusa Islands, Lombok or the Gili Islands then transportation is usually organized and included in the price.
Getting around in an area
You can continue to hire cars or taxis or you can rent a scooter to scoot around to all of the highlights. Scooters cost 50,000-80,000 per day. Driving in Bali can be challenging because of traffic and I highly recommend only driving if you have experience . If you do not then either choose not to drive or practice somewhere quiet first. Through Go-Jek you can hire drivers to take you on a scooter which is a fraction of the price and extremely affordable.

Where to Go in Bali
A quick overview in map form of where to go in Bali with more detailed descriptions of each place below.
This is the big question and often the most difficult part of travelling in Bali for people. It’s a large island, over 5,000 sq. km and there are many places to see in Bali. Below I’ve listed the highlights of the best places to visit in Bali and where to stay in Bali to help you decide which area or places you want to spend your time in. These are listed in no particular order.
Ubud is the most famous area in Bali and it’s here that you’ll recognize the rice fields from Eat, Pray Love . Ubud is a town located in the centre of the island and is most known for its culture and abundance of yoga studios and yoga retreats in Ubud . A stop here is in order if you want to see temples, traditional dancing and crafts and to shop. Just outside of Ubud are the most famous rice terraces and some of the islands most famous scenery.

Canggu is a digital nomad hub with lots of westerns living here permanently or spending a few months on the southern coast. Canggu has a distinct backpacker vibe as there are no resorts in the area (though it’s considered an up and coming resort area). It’s busy but also has black sand beaches and it’s easy to find a party. The areas biggest draw are its easy surfing waves, cheaper accommodation prices and Australian style cafes. It’s very common to find yoga here as well.
Seminyak is an area on Bali’s southern coast, next to Canggu that is known for its high-end luxury Bali resorts, villas and spas. There isn’t much to do in Seminyak as it’s an area to hang out and relax in. High-end shopping, excellent restaurants, beach clubs, bars and beach sunsets are most common as it’s popular for Bali nightlife. Surfing is also popular here. But don’t forget your wallet if you plan on visiting here!
Bukit Peninsula (Uluwatu)
The southern tip of Bali, Bukit Peninsula, is often referred to just as Uluwatu which is only one area of this area. It’s different from the rest of Bali because of its dramatic cliffs that plunge into the bluest waters found on the island. The area is well-known for its world-class surf breaks and white sand beaches, in which there are plenty to choose from. Travellers here most commonly stay at higher-end resorts or villas but it’s not hard to find cheaper accommodation and places to party with a high or low budget.
Nusa Dua is another resort area on Bali’s southern shores close to the Bukit Peninsula and opposite Uluwatu. It’s famed for its all-inclusive beach resorts which boast white sand and an 18-hole golf course. Shopping and relaxing are the main activities here but some cultural things can be done here too. It’s an excellent area for families.
Nusa Islands (Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan & Nusa Ceningan)
The Nusa Islands are not considered a part of Bali as they are actually three separate islands off of Bali’s southeast coast that make up the Nusa Penida District. They are extremely common to visit during a Bali trip because it takes only half an hour by speedboat to reach these stunning islands.
Nusa Penida is the largest with dramatic scenery and vibrant blue waters. Nusa Lembongan is the most popular and much smaller in size but is popular for diving and surfing. Nusa Ceningan is the smallest but is equally as beautiful.
Kuta was Bali’s first main tourist development and has since turned into a popular spot for partying and beach resorts. Travellers of all sorts come here to be entertained and catch the easy waves that are ideal for beginners. Located in central Bali, Kuta is often looked down upon from some travellers as being too touristy but it has all of the attractions that families, backpackers and luxury travellers could ever want.
Denpasar is the islands capital and often a place skipped by visitors. It’s a packed and chaotic area where over 1 million locals call home. On the east side you’ll find Sanur beach and in the centre you’ll find a hub of politics but also authentic restaurants, shopping and parks. Denpasar is also where the airport is located.
Munduk is a spot in central Bali that often goes unnoticed in travellers Bali itinerary. This mountain village is popular for its trekking through the hills and jungle surroundings. A trip to Munduk will ensure that you see waterfalls, visit lakes and escape from the sometimes overpowering heat.
Amed is made up of a long strip of local fishing villages along Bali’s less popular northern coast. If snorkelling and diving are you thing then make sure you check out the marine life off of Amed’s shores. Still relatively unknown, Amed is slowly making it’s spot on travellers radar, becoming more developed but still hanging onto its traditions. Stunningly clear waters, a beach, small town feels and the beginners of a yoga hub are all here.
Lovina is a very relaxed resort area in northern Bali that is too made up of a string of villages like Amed. It’s less touristy and quiet. A spot here is in order if you wish to get away from it all. Here you can spot dolphins, chill out and soak up the sun on the black sand beaches.
How Long to Spend in Bali?
On average, people who are vacationing in Bali spend 1 week and those who are travelling spend 2 weeks in Bali. I recommend this as the bare minimum. You will not be able to see all the places listed in this guide in 2 weeks, which is fine because some places are similar.
Have fun planning your Bali trip, I hope you fall in love with the island as much as I and so many others did!

7 Day Bali Itinerary - From Seaside to Jungle
This is a one week itinerary to see the highlights of Bali . Picking locations can be difficult since there are tons of scenic and trendy places not just on the island, but on neighbouring islands like Lembongan, Nusa Penida, Komodo, Lombok and the Gili islands. We have travelled to Bali and its neighbouring islands three times and still haven't seen most of it!
Our 7 day Bali itinerary will first take you to Bali's southern Bukit Peninsula where you'll find idyllic beaches and surfer vibes. Your next stop will be in the rainforest, where you'll discover the cultural and natural wellness side of Bali.
It can be tempting to squeeze in as many places as you can, but we highly recommend focussing on these two areas, as they represent a diverse cross section of Balinese culture and nature. You will be able to fully relax and soak in each area, rather than spending most of your time on transport.
Also included are the best and worst times to visit Bali, best ways to get around the island and places to avoid in Bali, which will be especially helpful during your first visit.
7 Days in Bali
Best time of year to visit Bali
Bali has a rainy season and a dry season. The rainy season runs from October- April and the dry season runs from May - September. We have visited Bali during December, March, and July.
Bali Rainy Season - Pros & Cons:
If you're looking to travel on a budget, accommodation is cheaper during the rainy season. It is also a quieter time to visit with not as many tourists.
In March, although it was the rainy season, most of the days were sunny with blue skies and there were a couple downpours usually at night time. In December when we visited, there were more days with grey skies and a few downpours during the daytime. The biggest downfall of travelling in the rainy season is the humidity. It felt very hot outside.
Bali Dry Season - Pros & Cons:
When we were in Bali in July, it wasn't as humid and the temperature felt perfect. Every day had blue skies and we barely saw any rain. It was busier with tourists compared to when we went in March during the rainy season. Accommodation is also more expensive during this time.
Another consideration is that if you're planning to visit other South Eastern countries, such as Myanmar or Thailand, June-October is one of the worst times to go as they are having their monsoon season.
Worst time to go to Bali
In our opinion the worst time to go is over Christmas/New Year holidays in December and the beginning of January. Not only are you there during rainy season, but there are tons of tourists and accommodation is more expensive. If you can, I would avoid going during this time.
Getting Around Bali
The best way to get around Bali is by taxi, by hiring a private driver, or by motorbike. Using taxis or private drivers may sound expensive to get around, but it is cheap compared to other countries. For example, to hire a private driver for a 2 hour drive from the southern peninsula of Bali to Ubud costs around 500,000 IDR ($35 USD). If you're traveling with others you can split this cost as well.
You can't count on public transportation and the driving is a bit crazy. I wouldn't recommend renting a car, since the roads are small and you can't zip around traffic jams like you can with a motorbike.
Taxis in Bali
Most taxi drivers will try to overcharge you. When I arrived at the airport a taxi driver told me that it would cost $15 USD to Kuta, when it actually only costs about $2 USD with a metered Blue Bird taxi.
Make sure you use Blue Bird Taxi since they actually use the meter properly . Some other taxi companies have a meter and try to look like a Blue Bird taxi, but they will add additional fees at the end. This happened to us once. The taxi driver said there was a 30% extra surcharge, though we argued ourselves out of it. If you can’t find a Blue Bird taxi, just make sure you are upfront about the costs at the beginning and you should be fine.
Hiring a private driver in Bali
Hiring a private driver is the easiest way to travel around in Bali. When we were travelling in the south of Bali we met a taxi driver that goes by the name John Coffee (Whatsapp is +62-813-3844-4945). He was the first taxi driver we met that gave us a fair price right off the bat. We ended up using him as our private driver and he set us up with other private drivers once we were in the north of Bali. It was easy to set up our schedule through Whatsapp and the drivers were never late for their pick up time. Two years later we texted John and his service was just as great!
Having a private driver is also handy if you leave anything behind. Ari left his debit card at an ATM in Padang Padang and they actually went and found it and we paid for them to drive it up to us in Ubud.
You can also organize a driver with your hotel, but we find it's a bit pricier. The only time we organized a driver with our hotel was before we arrived at the airport to avoid the hassle of negotiating after a long flight.
Scooters in Bali
Renting a scooter is the most fun way to get around in Bali! The southern peninsula of Bali is generally a safe place to bike around, since the roads are quieter. It's the perfect location to get a feel for the road. However, beware that in busier cities, police officers may stop and fine you if you don't have an international license . Rentals are inexpensive and cost around 50,000-100,000 IDR per day (~$3.5 - $7 USD). You can usually rent one from your hotel or homestay.
7 Day Bali Itinerary
Days 1-4: uluwatu and padang padang.
On the western side of Bali's Bukit Peninsula, you'll find amazing beaches, good surfing, gorgeous sunsets, quirky restaurants, fun bars and a relaxed lifestyle. This area of Bali has total surfer vibes and you'll see many surfers zipping around on their scooters with their surfboard attached.
The best place to stay in Bali's Bukit Peninsula is around the Padang Padang and Uluwatu area. You will have close access to beaches, restaurants, bars, and shops.
If you’re comfortable riding a scooter it’s so much fun to drive around and explore the quieter south.
Where to stay in Uluwatu and Padang Padang area
Mule Malu ($$)
Gravity ($$$)
The hotel is a bit farther away from shops, restaurants, and beaches, so we wouldn't recommend staying here if you're uncomfortable with riding a scooter to get around. It's a hassle to get taxis for short stops around the area and there aren't sidewalks for a portion of the road into the town.
The price per night for 2 people is around $100 USD -$200 USD depending on the size of suite you get and time of year you travel. Their suite, the Passion Room, has its own private hot tub and sauna!
Suarga Padang Padang ($$$$): Fully Loaded Experience 🥔✨
Top Things to do in Uluwatu and Padang Padang
Below are some must-do experiences in Bali's southern peninsula.
Have a beach day at Padang Padang Beach:
Walk down the stone steps to the shoreline and pick a spot to relax in the sand. We loved swimming at this picturesque beach. Look out for the ladies selling beautiful colourful sarongs that you can use as a beach blanket. We always make sure to grab a couple of them to take back home each time we go. They are a good price here. We can usually get them for 50,000 IDR (~3.50 USD) each.
If you like surfing, you can rent surfboards at Padang Padang Beach for 100,000 IDR (~7 USD) an hour. Beware of the sharp coral at low tide though.
The entrance fee to go to the beach is 10,000 IDR (~$0.70 USD) per person and the car park is 5,000 IDR (~$0.35).
Drink bubbly and watch the sunset at Suarga Padang Padang:
You don’t have to be a guest at the luxury hotel to get food and drinks in their open-air restaurant and bar. This is one of the best spots to watch the sunset in Bali. Go there an hour before sunset so that you can get the best seat. Watching the sunset over the surfers was a blissful moment.
Go Surfing at Balangan Beach:
Balangan Beach is off the beaten path and feels wilder than other popular beaches. The scenic white-sand beach is located between two limestone cliffs and has chilled surfer vibes. There are a few cafes and you can rent surfing boards for 100,000 IDR (~7 USD) an hour.
The waves are choppier here so it's not the best swimming beach, but it's great for beginner or advanced surfing. The first set of waves farthest from the beach are larger for advanced surfers, and the second set closer to the beach are smaller for beginners. If you're a beginner, make sure to go closer to high tide so you can avoid hurting yourself on the reef bottom. Beginner waves are 3-5 feet.
Drink banana smoothies and watch expert surfers at Uluwatu Beach:
Uluwatu Beach has cliffside cafes, restaurants and small shops overlooking the ocean. We love drinking banana smoothies and watching expert surfers surf the large waves.
Walk to a secret beach and see a shipwreck:
To the left of Uluwatu Beach you can walk down stoned steps to access the coves and caves of Suluban Beach. Make sure you go at low tide to be able to access the beach. Once you get down the stairs there is a hidden beach located under a cove to the left. Walk underneath the cove you will see a pretty beach with a colorful shipwreck washed up on shore.
Make sure you leave the hidden beach before high tide makes it too difficult to get back under the cove!
Watch the sunset at the Uluwatu temple:
Uluwatu temple is a gorgeous sight and the perfect place to watch the sunset. The Balinese Hindu sea temple is perched on a rock that overlooks the magnificent ocean.
Don't purchase a tour package to see the Uluwatu Temple because it's very overpriced. The best way to see the temple is by taking a motorbike or taxi and paying the entrance fee of 30,000 IDR (~$2.00 USD) to visit yourself.
When entering the religious site, dress modestly with a shirt that covers your shoulders and a skirt, pants or sarong to cover you legs. The monkeys around the temple are really cute, but make sure you don't leave your stuff out or they might try to steal it!
Eat at quirky and delicious restaurants:
There are many quirky restaurants along Jl. Labuansait road in the south of Bali. Our favourite restaurant is called The Place with No Name . They specialize in pescatarian and vegetarian cuisine. Everything we tried on their menu was outstanding with the Surf'n Tacos being our favourite. The interior of the restaurant is bright and well designed and the service is excellent. The restaurant's 5-star rating on TripAdvisor says enough!
For Italian, our favourite spot is Rolling Fork . The restaurant has a cozy and romantic ambience. We enjoyed their pasta and pizza and their service was excellent.
We love Bali's healthy smoothie bowls and you can find lots of them in the area. If you haven't heard of a smoothie bowl, it's a smoothie in a bowl with toppings such as fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, granola, nut butters, or coconut. We ordered smoothie bowls at our hotel each morning. Another great spot for smoothie bowls is Drifter Cafe .
Party in the south's hot spots:
The Bukit Peninsula is known for its fun outdoor parties. Unlike Kuta where there is a commercial Top-40 like clubbing scene, the vibe in the south is more carefree and free-spirited.
For a beautiful outdoor beach club with DJs and live music, try Ulu Cliffhouse . The beach club is located on a cliff with an expansive view of the ocean and has a 25-meter infinity pool. Check out their website to see their daily and evening events going on. On Friday evenings drinks are half price.
Cashew Tree is a favourite with Thursday parties featuring live music or DJs. The vibe is chill with a good crowd.
Hatch is another entertaining bar with good music, ping pong, N64, foosball and tasty cocktails. When we were there they played old school hip hop.
Have some downtime at your hotel:
Bali is known for having peaceful boutique hotels or homestays that promote a sense of wellbeing. We enjoyed hanging out at our bungalow or at the pool and reading for a couple hours.
Have a relaxing spa treatment:
There are a variety of spas you can pick from, but an issue we have with some inexpensive spas is that while you get your massage, the therapists will constantly chat or whisper to each other. Not very relaxing!
If you're looking for a spa with good value and professional services try Esthetic Spa or Laniakea Spa .
Days 5-7: Ubud
Your next stop is the cultural and wellness city of Bali tucked away in the middle of the jungle. You'll find lots of Hindu sites and temples, terraced-rice fields, yoga studios, wellness shops, spas, markets, cafes and restaurants.
From the Bukit Peninsula to Ubud, the drive will take about 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic. The easiest and quickest way to get there is by hiring a driver. It cost us 500,000 IDR (~$33 USD) for the private car. If there are two or more of you, you can split the cost!
Where to stay in Ubud
We've stayed in the center of the city and off the beaten path overlooking the rainforest. We loved each stay for different reasons. Below are some awesome spots we recommend.
Suparsa's Homestay ($)
It is a 10-minute walk to the Art Market and to cultural sites such as Saraswati Temple. Plenty of restaurants are also nearby within a 5-minute walking distance.
Taman Amartha Hotel ($$)
Rooms start from around $60 USD per night for two people and breakfast is included.
Villa Kalisat ($$$)
Rooms start from $137-$163 USD per night for 2 people depending on the time of year you travel. It is also a minimum stay of two nights.
Top Things to do in Ubud
There are so many things to do in Ubud. Below are our top experiences.
Walk the Campuhan Ridge:
About a 10-minute walk from the center of Ubud, there is an easy 1.5 km hiking trail along the Campuhan ridge. The beautiful hike has views of the rainforest and rice paddies on both sides of you. You will also see some of the famous Bali swings that are all over Instagram. The journey should take under 30-minutes one way and leads you to one of our favourite spots in Ubud, next on the list below!
Have a spa day at Karsa Spa:
At the end of the Campuhan ridge walk is one of the best spas we've ever been to in our lives! Karsa Spa is like heaven on earth. It is incredible value for the quality of treatments you get. It has a 5-star rating on TripAdvisor with over 2,000 reviews!
We decided to go a little crazy and reserved a customized 4-hour spa package. When we first walked through the garden to the entrance we heard birds chirping and saw colourful butterflies fluttering around. We were given a form to fill out with our massage preferences and different essential oils to choose from. We were then taken into the back to our own private open-air bungalow.
First we had an hour body scrub with a flower bath. So many flowers! Next was the 90-minute Intuitive Heart Massage, which combines Reiki, Balinese, Swedish, Lomi-Lomi, Shiatsu and deep tissue techniques. We were in la-la land after this massage. We were then taken to another room for our hair creambath, which included a scalp massage that almost put us to sleep. Lastly, we had a 30-minute foot massage to finish off our spa day.
How much did our luxurious 4-hour spa day cost? Only 1,030,000 IDR (~70 USD) per person! It's hard to get just a one-hour massage for that price in North America.
Because this spa is so popular, make sure to book your treatments in advance. If you time your spa day to end just before sunset, you can catch the gorgeous sunset on your way back over the Campuhan Ridge.
Explore the city on foot and admire the Balinese architecture, cultural sites and Hindu temples:
Ubud is the capital of culture in Bali. Take a walk through the backstreets to get a glimpse of local life and the beautiful Balinese architecture. If you're lucky you may even see a Hindu celebration in the streets! Some notable historic sites are the stunning Saraswati Temple and the Agung Rai Museum of Art.
Shop at the Art Market:
Ubud is known for its artisanal crafts. Check out the Art Market in the centre of the city to find a plethora of stalls with vibrant clothing, colourful sarongs, Balinese statues, woven purses, jewelry and housewares.
Eat outstanding cuisine at Locavore or Pica South American Kitchen:
We couldn't believe it when we heard a restaurant in Ubud made Asia's Top 50 Restaurants list. That restaurant is Locavore , a Balinese-European culinary adventure that comes as a pre-fixe tasting menu. Locavore focuses on sustainable and local Balinese ingredients. You can either pick the seafood and veggie forward Locavore option or just the vegetarian option. We also got the excellent Indonesian-cocktail pairing to accompany our tasing menu. The dishes and cocktails were beautifully presented and unique.
To get a table you will have to make a reservation months in advance. The tasting menu costs 1,250,000 IDR (~80 USD) and optional cocktail pairing 650,000 ID (~$42 USD). It is worth it!
Our other favourite restaurant in Ubud is Pica South America Kitchen owned by a Chilean chef. This modern Peruvian eatery has terrific food and its small size gives it an intimate and cozy vibe. We have travelled to Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Brazil and Argentina and this was some of the best South American food we have tasted. Our favourite dishes were the empanadas and the pork belly. What a treat it was!
Hangout at a peaceful cafe overlooking the rice fields:
There are tons of quirky cafes in Ubud to discover, but our favourites are calm places a bit off the beaten path overlooking the rice fields. It's so peaceful having a coffee or smoothie while overlooking the rice paddies in the distance.
Cafe Pomegranate is located in a circular open air hut in the middle of the rice paddies. It's the perfect place to hang out and grab a drink or to work remotely. Our other favourite is Karsa Cafe just next door to Karsa Spa. It's a great setting to grab a drink in one of their private cabanas overlooking the fish ponds and rice terraces.
Top Tip: These cafes are great for the setting and drinks, but we recommend getting food elsewhere.
Try a Balinese Cooking class:
We took a cooking class at Paon Bali and weren't prepared for the unforgettable experience it was going to be. We aren't surprised the cooking class has 5 stars on TripAdvisor and over 4,000 reviews!
We were picked up from our hotel and driven to the marketplace where we learned about traditional Balinese ingredients. Next, we were taken to our host Puspa's beautiful family home where we learned about Balinese family home traditions before starting our cooking class.
The cooking portion of the tour was well organized and we made a variety of delicious authentic dishes. We were also given a recipe book of what we made to take home with us. My favourite dish was the chicken satay. The staff were lovely and we were stuffed by the end!
Chill out at XL Shisha Lounge:
XL Shisha Lounge is one of our favourite spots to chill out at in either the daytime or night time. The ambient space has low tables with pillow seating and good music. While smoking shisha you can play board games, such as Jenga. The vibe at night is fun and they have excellent live music. Every time we visit we end up staying for hours!
Drop in for a yoga or meditation class:
If you love yoga or are intrigued by yoga, Ubud will be your yoga utopia. Yogis from all over the world come here to improve their practice, become yoga instructors or for other spiritual practices, such as meditation. There are tons of spiritual retreats and yoga studios in Ubud.
The Yoga Barn is a great place to drop in for a class or a workshop. They are open 7 days a week and have around 19 classes to choose from each day. They also offer workshops outside of yoga, such as sound healing, chakra & aura meditation and dance.
Places to Avoid in Bali
We recommend avoiding Kuta, Seminyak and Legian as they are very touristy, loud and more commercial feeling with their nightclubs and hotels. It felt like every 10 seconds in Kuta and Legian a local would ask us if we needed a taxi or if we wanted to buy something. Some people were verbally aggressive when trying to get us into their store. Also, on Kuta Beach we noticed quite a bit of garbage and locals would come up to us every few minutes asking us to buy something. Not the relaxing beach setting you would imagine! There are better areas in Bali to focus your time on.
Itinerary Extension Options:
If you're able to add a few days onto your trip, consider visiting the serene and mountainous Munduk region or boating through the Komodo Islands to see Komodo Dragons and a pink sand beach.
We hope you enjoy your time exploring this beautiful island!

Things to do in Bali
A cultural hub in Bali, Ubud offers a perfect blend of art, nature, and tradition. Kids will love exploring the Monkey Forest, where they can interact with playful monkeys. If parents are into yoga, The Yoga Barn is an amazing place to practice yoga, to book beauty/relaxation/holistic treatments, healthy food and if you dare, try the ecstatic dance!
This serene village boasts stunning rice terraces and traditional Balinese lifestyle. Take your kids on a gentle trek through the terraced fields, where they can learn about the farming practices and enjoy the scenic beauty. You can also join a Balinese farm-to-table cooking class.
Known for its breathtaking cliffs and mesmerizing sunsets, Uluwatu is a great spot for family fun. Catch the Kecak dance performance at Uluwatu Temple, an entertaining cultural show for kids and adults alike, and enjoy the amazing beaches. I consider them the best of the island! (Be aware of tides. Uluwatu is known for its surf, but there are quiet beaches as well).
Mount Batur
For an unforgettable adventure, consider a sunrise hike up Mount Batur. While it's a challenging climb, kids will feel accomplished reaching the summit and witnessing the sunrise over the volcanic landscape. There are also springs that are very fun natural pools and this area is also known for it's coffee plantations. Do you dare to try the Kopi Luwak?
This charming coastal town offers a more relaxed atmosphere, perfect for family beach time. Take your kids on a dolphin-watching tour and they'll be thrilled to spot these playful creatures in the open sea.
Surrounded by lush forests and waterfalls, Munduk is a nature lover's paradise. Hike to Munduk Waterfall, a family-friendly trek that leads to a refreshing dip in the cool waters.
Bali elephant safari
A must-visit for families, this park allows kids to get up close to elephants. They will be able to touch them, bathe them, ride them and swim with them. You can book hotels were elephants come pick you up at your room to take you to dinner. Your kids will never forget their elephant taxi!
Bali treetop adventure park
Amazing option for older kids. Located in Bedugul, this park offers an adrenaline-pumping experience with ziplining, challenging rope courses and rafting amid the beautiful forest.
This busy place is great for shopping, here you can find typical Balinese souvenirs, beautiful home decor or occidental items as well. Another option here is to book surf lessons for kids and adults.
GILI TRAWANGAN
More than a day trip, it would be a 2-3 day trip. This one is the largest of the three Gili Islands, is a captivating destination for families with kids. Its tranquil ambiance and car-free environment make it an ideal spot for a relaxing getaway. Kids will delight in the island's pristine beaches, where they can build sandcastles and splash in the gentle waves. Snorkeling in the shallow waters reveals a mesmerizing underwater world, allowing kids to encounter colorful fish and playful sea turtles. Families can rent bicycles to explore the island's charming pathways, or hop on a traditional horse-drawn carriage known as a "cidomo." As the sun sets, Gili Trawangan comes alive with beachside bonfires and family-friendly events. Sharing laughter and creating lasting memories amid the island's natural beauty make Gili Trawangan a truly enchanting destination for families seeking a tropical paradise with their kids. I would recommend not going during weekends with kids during high season. It gets crowded. Hotels near the mosque, can be very loud at night.

Tips for First-Timers in Bali: A Guide to an Unforgettable Adventure
Table of Contents
Bali, often referred to as the “Island of the Gods,” is a tropical paradise that entices travelers from around the globe with its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and vibrant energy. For first-time visitors, the island promises an array of experiences, from tranquil beaches and spiritual temples to thrilling adventures and culinary delights. However, to make the most of your Bali adventure, it’s essential to plan carefully and understand the island’s unique rhythm. This article provides essential tips for first-time travelers to Bali, ensuring a smooth and memorable journey.
Planning Your First Time Ever Trip to Bali
Choosing the Right Time to Visit
Timing your visit to Bali can significantly impact your experience. Bali enjoys a tropical climate, with the best weather typically from April to October. During these months, the days are sunny, and the humidity is relatively low, making it perfect for outdoor activities. However, this is also the peak tourist season, which means more crowds and higher prices. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder months of April, May, or September. These months offer a balance of good weather and fewer tourists.
On the other hand, the rainy season from November to March might deter some travelers, but it can also provide a unique charm with lush green landscapes and a more peaceful atmosphere. Just be prepared for occasional downpours. Bali also hosts various cultural events and festivals throughout the year, such as Nyepi (Day of Silence) and Galungan, which can add a unique cultural experience to your trip.
Budgeting Your Trip
Bali can cater to a wide range of budgets, from backpacker-friendly hostels to luxurious private villas. On average, a budget traveler might spend around $30-50 per day, including accommodation in a hostel, meals at local warungs (small eateries), and basic transportation. Mid-range travelers can expect to spend around $70-150 per day, enjoying comfortable hotels, dining at a mix of local and international restaurants, and participating in some paid activities. For those seeking luxury, Bali offers world-class resorts and private villas, where daily expenses can easily exceed $300.

Transportation costs in Bali are relatively low. Renting a motorbike is a popular and affordable option, costing around $5-7 per day. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also available, though they can be more expensive. When it comes to food, Bali offers a diverse culinary scene. Local dishes at warungs are incredibly affordable, while international cuisine and fine dining establishments will naturally cost more.
Essential Documents and Packing
Before you jump into your Bali adventure, ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of entry. Many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival, which is valid for 30 days. However, it’s advisable to check the latest visa requirements before you travel.
Travel insurance is a must, covering potential health issues, accidents, and trip disruptions. Depending on your activities, you might also want to consider additional coverage for adventurous pursuits like diving or trekking.
Packing for Bali depends on your planned activities. For beach lovers, lightweight clothing, swimwear, and sunscreen are essentials. Adventure enthusiasts should bring comfortable trekking shoes, a hat, and insect repellent. If you plan to visit temples or attend ceremonies, pack modest clothing, including a sarong, which is often required for temple visits.

Getting Around Bali
Transportation options.
Bali offers a variety of transportation options to suit different preferences and budgets. Domestic flights are available if you plan to explore neighboring islands, but within Bali, most travelers rely on motorbikes, cars, and taxis.
Renting a motorbike is a popular choice, offering flexibility and the ability to navigate through Bali’s often congested traffic. However, it’s crucial to wear a helmet and be cautious on the roads. If you’re not comfortable riding a motorbike, renting a car with a driver is a convenient alternative. This option allows you to explore the island at your own pace without worrying about navigation or parking.
Taxis and ride-sharing services like Grab are widely available, especially in more developed areas like Seminyak and Ubud. For shorter distances, walking and cycling are also great ways to soak in the local atmosphere, although the heat can be intense during the day.

Driving Safety and Etiquette
Bali’s traffic can be chaotic, especially in popular tourist areas. If you decide to rent a motorbike or car, be aware of the local driving rules. Traffic moves on the left side of the road, and it’s essential to stay alert, as local drivers often weave through traffic with little regard for lanes.
For first-timers, it’s advisable to avoid driving during peak hours and at night when visibility is low. Always carry your international driver’s license, as traffic police frequently check for documentation. Using public transportation is limited in Bali, but if you do opt for it, be prepared for crowded buses with varying schedules.
Where to Stay When You’re in Bali
Popular areas for first-timers.
Choosing the right area to stay in Bali can greatly influence your experience. Seminyak is a popular choice for those seeking luxury, nightlife, and upscale shopping. The area is dotted with high-end resorts, fine dining restaurants, and chic beach clubs.
Canggu, known for its surf culture and trendy cafes, is a hub for digital nomads and those looking for a laid-back vibe. Ubud, located inland, is the cultural heart of Bali, offering a serene environment with lush rice terraces, wellness retreats, and a strong focus on Balinese art and spirituality.
For budget-conscious travelers, Kuta is a lively area with affordable accommodations, vibrant nightlife, and easy access to the beach. Each of these areas offers a unique experience, so it’s worth considering what kind of trip you want when choosing where to stay.

Accommodation Choices
Bali’s accommodation options range from luxurious private villas with stunning ocean views to budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses. For those looking for a homey experience, homestays offer a glimpse into local life, often with the warm hospitality of a Balinese family.
Booking platforms like Airbnb, Booking.com, and Agoda provide a wide range of options. It’s advisable to book in advance, especially during peak season, to secure the best deals and locations.
Top Must-See Attractions and Activities In Bali
Cultural experiences.
Bali is rich in culture, and no trip is complete without visiting its iconic temples. Tanah Lot and Uluwatu are famous for their stunning ocean views, while Besakih, known as the “Mother Temple”, offers a deep dive into Balinese spirituality. Watching a traditional dance performance, such as the Kecak dance at Uluwatu, is another way to immerse yourself in the island’s cultural heritage.
Art lovers will appreciate the vibrant art markets and galleries in Ubud, where you can find everything from traditional paintings to contemporary works. Don’t miss the chance to explore Bali’s famous rice terraces, such as Tegallalang, where you can witness the island’s agricultural beauty.

Adventure Activities
For adventure seekers, Bali offers an array of thrilling activities. Surfing is a must-try, with popular spots like Kuta and Canggu offering waves suitable for all levels. If hiking is more your style, trekking up Mount Batur to catch the sunrise is an unforgettable experience. Bali’s underwater world is equally enticing, with opportunities for diving and snorkeling in places like Amed and Nusa Lembongan. For a dose of adrenaline, consider white-water rafting on the Ayung River.
Relaxation and Wellness
Bali is a haven for relaxation and wellness. Indulge in a traditional Balinese massage or spend a day at one of the island’s many luxurious spas. Ubud, in particular, is known for its yoga and meditation retreats, offering the perfect environment for rejuvenation. Of course, no trip to Bali is complete without spending some time soaking up the sun on its beautiful beaches.

Bali’s culinary scene is a feast for the senses. Traditional dishes like nasi goreng (fried rice), satay (skewered meat), and gado-gado (vegetable salad with peanut sauce) are must-tries. Street food is an integral part of the Bali experience, with local warungs offering delicious and affordable meals. For a more upscale dining experience, Bali also boasts a number of fine dining establishments that fuse local flavors with international techniques.
International Cuisine
Bali’s food scene is incredibly diverse, catering to all tastes. Whether you’re craving Italian pasta, Indian curries at Red Gunpowder , or Japanese sushi, you’ll find a restaurant that satisfies your palate. The island is also a haven for vegan and vegetarian travelers, with many eateries offering plant-based menus.
Quench your thirst with fresh fruit juices and smoothies, a staple in Bali’s warm climate. Coffee lovers will appreciate the island’s rich coffee culture, with numerous cafes serving locally grown beans. For something stronger, try arak, a traditional Balinese spirit, or relax with a cold Bintang beer.
Safety and Etiquette When Visiting Bali For the First Time
Personal safety.
While Bali is generally safe for travelers, it’s important to stay vigilant. Be aware of common scams, especially around tourist areas. Pickpocketing can occur in crowded places, so keep your belongings secure. At night, stick to well-lit areas and avoid walking alone in unfamiliar places.
Cultural Sensitivity
Balinese culture is deeply rooted in tradition, and it’s important to show respect during your visit. Dress modestly when visiting temples, and always wear a sarong and sash. When offering respect to the locals, remember that head is considered sacred, so avoid touching anyone’s head. Photography is usually welcome, but it’s polite to ask for permission first, especially during religious ceremonies.
Health and Hygiene
Protect yourself from mosquito bites by using insect repellent, especially in the evenings. While Bali is not a malaria zone, dengue fever can be a concern. Drink bottled water to avoid stomach issues, and be mindful of food hygiene when eating street food.

Frequently Asked Questions About First Time Visting Bali
1. do i need a sim card in bali, and how can i get one.
Yes, getting a local SIM card in Bali is highly recommended, especially if you want to stay connected without relying on Wi-Fi. Local SIM cards are inexpensive and provide good coverage across the island. You can purchase a SIM card upon arrival at the airport or from local shops and convenience stores. Popular providers like Telkomsel, XL Axiata, and Indosat offer various data packages, and you can choose one based on your data needs. Just ensure that your phone is unlocked and compatible with local networks.
2. Is it safe to drink tap water in Bali?
No, it is not safe to drink tap water in Bali. The local water supply is not treated to the same standards as in many Western countries, and drinking it can lead to stomach issues or more severe health problems. It’s best to stick to bottled water, which is widely available and inexpensive. Most hotels and restaurants also provide filtered water or offer bottled water as part of their service. Additionally, be cautious when consuming ice in drinks, ensuring it’s made from purified water.
3. What is the best way to exchange money in Bali?
The best way to exchange money in Bali is through authorized money changers or banks. Authorized money changers usually offer better rates than those found at the airport or in hotels. Look for money changers with clear signs indicating their authorization, and always count your money carefully before leaving the counter. Avoid exchanging money with street vendors or in poorly lit, less reputable locations, as scams can occur. Alternatively, ATMs are widely available, and withdrawing cash using a debit or credit card is convenient, though it may incur additional fees.
4. How can I avoid getting sick in Bali?
To avoid getting sick in Bali, follow these health and safety precautions:
- Drink only bottled or purified water and avoid using tap water for brushing your teeth.
- Choose well-cooked foods and eat at reputable restaurants or warungs with high turnover, which ensures fresher food.
- Use insect repellent to protect against mosquito-borne diseases like dengue fever.
- Practice good hygiene, such as washing your hands frequently and using hand sanitizer, especially before eating.
- If you have specific dietary restrictions or a sensitive stomach, be cautious with street food and opt for familiar dishes.
5. Is Bali a good destination for shopping, and what should I buy?
Yes, Bali is an excellent destination for shopping, offering a wide range of unique items that reflect the island’s rich culture and craftsmanship. Popular items to buy include:
- Balinese handicrafts: Such as wood carvings, stone sculptures, and traditional masks.
- Textiles: Including batik fabrics, sarongs, and traditional ikat weavings.
- Silver jewelry: The village of Celuk is renowned for its skilled silversmiths.
- Art: Paintings and artwork from Ubud’s galleries and markets.
- Home decor: Handwoven baskets, ceramics, and rattan furniture. You can find these items in markets like Ubud Art Market, Sukawati Market, and Seminyak’s boutiques. Bargaining is common in markets, so don’t hesitate to negotiate for a better price.

Cruise itinerary This holiday begins with a luxury stay in Bali . Laze by the pool or on the beachfront, and take in the lush landscape of Indonesia. You'll have breakfast included throughout you 5-night stay.
Next, board Norwegian Sun for an 11-night cruise of Asia, calling at:
- Lembar... part of the Lesser Sunda archipelago, Lombok is a beach-blessed, and downright blissful island that is dominated by the majestic Mount Rinjani volcano, and is the gateway to the nearby Gili Islands, whose coral reefs teem with marine life.
- Calukan Bawang... this relatively new port of is the main gateway to northern Bali, and you'll sail into a harbour filled with traditional schooners, then can join excursions to the northern highlands or the old capital of Singaraja.
- Semarang... head into the Javanese jungle to admire the ancient Buddhist monument of Borobudur, one of Asia's great cultural icons, looming above a patchwork of green paddy fields. You can also visit the stunning volcanic landscapes of the Dieng Plateau dotted with 8th-century Hindu temples.
- Malacca... one of the largest trading ports in Asia during the 15th century, this town has had a recent tourist resurgence, and is making a name for itself due to its bustling night markets and UNESCO World Heritage Site centre.
- Port Klang... travel inland independently to tour Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia. Head up to the Batu Caves to see the rainbow staircase and 140-foot-high golden Hindu statue.
- Ho Chi Minh City... formerly known as Saigon, home to some of the country's best museums and has a heavy influence from the French, from the architecture to its coffee culture. We recommend trying Ca Phe Trung, a strong shot of coffee whipped with egg yolks and condensed milk.
- Nha Trang... this coastal town is known for its excellent sandy beaches and beach bars serving all kinds of delicious treats. You can book a shore excursion to visit villages in the surrounding countryside, join a bike tour, or go on a scenic river cruise.
- Singapore... you'll finish your cruise and spend two nights in this destination, which Lonely Planet describes as "one of Asia's hit-list destinations". A melting pot of different cultures, you can visit Buddhist temples, browse stalls at Arab bazaars, take afternoon tea in grand Victorian hotels, or go on a shopping spree at ultra-modern malls.
Land tour After your cruise, you'll fly from Singapore to Delhi and begin a week-long journey around India. After tours of both Old and New Delhi , you'll head to Agra for an overnight stay and a half-day tour, where you be able to admire the beauty of the Taj Mahal at sunrise.
Then, you'll make your way to Ranthambore for two nights. Here you'll enjoy Game Drives in the national park, famous for its tigers—it's known as one of the best places in the world to spot them.
Jaipur will be your next stop, and you'll have a full-day tour of the city during your 2-night stay. Explore the yellow-hued Amer Fort that served as the medieval capital of the Kacchwaha Rajputs until the 18th century, and see the impressive Hawa Mahal.
You'll spend one final night back in Delhi before boarding your flight home.
