Lake Baikal Travel Guide - Top 10 Attractions

Home / Russia Travel Experiences / Lake Baikal Travel Guide – Top 10 Attractions

Located in the Eastern Siberia close to the Mongolian border, within the Irkutsk Oblast (Western shore) and Buryatia (Eastern Shore), the glimmering blue pearl of Russia, Lake Baikal, is rightfully upheld as Siberia’s most famous attraction. Read on as this Lake Baikal travel guide will take you on an adventure you might just make a reality someday.

Its clear-as-a-mirror waters are a reflection of Siberia’s wildness, its vastness and its beauty. A UNESCO World Heritage Site , the crescent-shaped lake extends for 636km from north to south and is up to 1,637m deep, making it the deepest lake in the world. In fact, 20% of the world’s fresh water is contained within Lake Baikal.

Intersected by the Trans-Siberian Railway , the Baikal region is an easily accessible and fabulously scenic place to get acquainted with a world of uniquely Siberian thrills. This guide will introduce you to the must-see Lake Baikal attractions and will advise on the best time for travelling around the region. You can embark on your Baikal tour either from the western part in Irkutsk Oblast or from the eastern part – Buryatia. Let’s start the Lake Baikal’s list of attractions with the most popular among tourists – the western part.

Table of Contents

1. Irkutsk city

The unofficial capital of the region, also known as the “Paris of Siberia” makes a great starting point for planning your excursions in the region. Take an Irkutsk city tour and explore the stunning architecture and warm hospitality of the locals. Make a photo-stop at the beautiful Russian Orthodox church and a Polish Cathedral (the only Siberian Gothic-style building), and stroll along the embankment of River Angara.

Irkutsk Lake Baikal Russia tour

One of the most charming parts of Irkutsk is the city centre with its green boulevards and the ensemble of the central square. You will see many small ones- and two-stored wooden houses or cabins that are decorated with “wooden laces” (hand-made carvings) as well as modern constructions of the 20th century. Take a pause and try Siberian dishes at one of the cozy cafes at 130th Quarter , nonetheless a pleasant place to stroll, packed with restaurants, cafes and commercial museums.

For the in-depth history of the region, visit the Irkutsk Museum of Regional Studies, which features fascinating exhibits on the indigenous cultures of the Baikal region, or take an excursion inside the Decembrists’ House – Russian aristocrats, who were exiled to Irkutsk after trying to prevent the coronation of Nicholas I.

2. Listvyanka village on Lake Baikal

Just in the 70-km drive from Irkutsk, nestled between the western shore of the lake and the mouth of the Angara River, Listvyanka is the most widely visited village in the Baikal region, with a good selection of hotels, restaurants and the opportunity to experience a Russian banya (sauna) right on the shore. This tiny fishermen village is the place to sample smoked omul (Baikal whitefish) while you take in the views. Take a ride on a  chairlift to enjoy a panorama views of Angara River and Lake Baikal from the Cherskogo Rock viewpoint. And don’t forget to visit the Baikal Limnological Museum with 11 aquariums, containing the Lake Baikal fauna and trained Baikal freshwater seals. Visit the  Taltsy open-air museum of wooden architecture and ethnography, which allows visitors to step into the everyday life and culture of Siberians from past centuries.

Taltsy Lake Baikal tour

Most of the sightseeing tours to the attractions of Lake Baikal start basically from here. From Listvyanka you can travel either to the south of the region, closer to the Mongolian border, or to the north to explore the Lake Baikal’s islands, bays and beaches.

3. The Great Baikal Trail

The ever-growing trail network links Listvyanka with Bolshiye Koty, another of the stunning fishing villages along the shore.  The 24km of the trail along the shore can be finished within 5-8 hours. The longest section of the trail runs from Listvyanka via Bolshiye Koty to Bolshoye Goloustnoye. The hike usually takes 2-3 days and is characterized by swift transitions between steep coastal bluffs, sandy beach and deep forest. There are guesthouses or homestays available at little villages in the evenings, and you can even get back to Irkutsk by boat or bus from trail’s end in Bolshoye Goloustnoye.

Lake-Baikal-trail-hiking-tour Russia

Since 2003, some 5,000 volunteers from more than 30 countries have built or improved some trails during hundreds of two-week work projects.  Siberian officials hope to circle the entire lake with trails, but until then enjoy the exclusivity and seclusion as you go it alone.

4. Circum-Baikal Railroad

An extraordinarily scenic stretch of rail beginning in Port Baikal, where you can get by a ferry from Listvyanka village. The Circum-Baikal Railway is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque sections of the Trans-Siberian Railway . An extraordinary achievement in engineering, known as the ‘gold belt’ of Siberia, it was one of the grand projects of Tsarist times. Built between 1896 and 1900 and designed by architects and engineers summoned from all over Europe, the rail was laid along the edge of the coast through the dramatic slopes of the Primorsky Range.

Trans-Siberian Lake Baikal train tour Russia

Spend a fantastic day trip on a train, it’s possible to hop on and off the train at some of the most scenic points along the railway , or join a group for a 6-hour cruise along the most beautiful parts of the railroad with a picnic organised on the shores. If travelling by train, your final destination can be either Irkutsk or Slyudyanka village – a getaway for hiking tours in the Sayan Mountains.

The train tours are operated just 2 days a week for Irkutsk – Slyudyanka – Listvyanka route, and 2 days for the reverse route. Every year the itinerary changes, so you need to double check the schedule in order to plan your tour in Lake Baikal.

5. Arshan village

Hot springs and mineral water origins are dotted all around the Baikal region. One of the more accessible places to enjoy their steamy delights is the village of Arshan, a two-hour scenic drive from the western coast of Lake Baikal and about 200 km south from Slyudyanka, it’s located in the foothills of the thickly forested Sayan Mountains on the bank of Kyngyrga river.

On the main street, you’ll find the Arshan Spa, a once-grand 1920s resort, which still attracts a steady stream of locals to its soothing mineral pools and mud baths. Water temperatures range from 11 to 45°C, with each pool said to possess different healing properties. Take a short drive to the nearby village of Zhemchug to plunge in the hot springs right under the sky.

Arsha Lake Baikal tour Russia

Around Arshan you can escape to peaceful walks in the forest and the “Badkirkharma Datsan”, a quaint Buddhist temple with a stunning mountain backdrop. Or visit the Mongolian market, which sells a variety of health products and herbals, as well as clothing made of yak, goat and camel wool.

Another popular tourist activity here is hiking – short treks up to the waterfalls and 6-hour-long climb to the Peak of Love (2,400m). Hard to imagine but true: traces of volcanic activity from the end of the Ice Age can be found near Arshan. The place is cold “ the valley of extinct volcanoes ” or just Volcanoes Valley.

Baikal trekking tour Russia

This fold is a water gap between the rivers Khi-Gol and Zhombolok, filled with lava from the volcanoes Kropotkin’s and Peretolchin’s, which were active just a few thousand years ago. The thickness of the lava layer in the valley reaches 150 meters, and nothing grows on its grey surface, in spite of the volcanic necks.

6. Peschanaya Bay

Located 80-km from Listvyanka, within the Pribaikalsky National Park, Peschanaya Bay (Sandy Bay), also known as “Siberian Riviera”, is a famous place in Baikal among locals and travellers. The Bay is guarded by two rocks-giants located on both sides of it, Big and Small Belfries, they protect Peshanaya Bay by their steep rocky slopes from strong winds.

Baikal cruise Russia

The bay is lighted by golden sands and bright summer sun. Sand dunes are changed by centuries-old pine trees, behind them hidden natural architectural creatures — granite rocks. The trees-walkers are the masterpieces themselves, ancient larch-trees that are shaped into unpredictable forms by the time and strong Baikal winds.

You can get to Peschanaya Bay by a passenger hydrofoil from Irkutsk or Listvyanka (about 4 hours en route) or join the short Lake Baikal cruise , which goes along the western shore to Olkhon Island . A hydrofoil operates only several days a week, so check the exact schedule before planning to visit this site.

7. Olkhon Island, Lake Baikal

Located in the centre of the lake and about 250 km north-east from Irkutsk, Olkhon is a symbol of Baikal and it’s the biggest island. 72 km long and 20 km wide, with the population about 1,500 people, it is also a part of Pribaikalsky National Park. With its endless beaches, bays, forests and mini-lakes, it’s definitely most beautiful part of Lake Baikal.

Lake Baikal Cruise

Olkhon is reachable overland or by the “sea”. Board a passenger hydrofoil from Irkutsk or Listvyanka which will take you on a 4-5-hour cruise along the western shore of Baikal. It operates just several days a week, so check the schedule before planning the trip to Olkhon. The driving route from Irkutsk will take about 3-4 hours, on which you may stop at the road cafe to try the traditional Buryat food: buzy and spicy tea, or visit the traditional Buryat village of Ust-Orda, where you can meet a shaman and learn about Buryat way of life. The route from Irkutsk will end at the village of Skhurta, located at the Maloye More (Small Sea) strait, from where you will need to take a ferry to Khuzhir village, main settlement, located in the middle of the island.

Olkhon Island is considered to be one of the world’s most important shamanistic centres by the Buryat people, the native inhabitants of the island. Locals often refer to a shaman for various consultations. It is believed that spirits of the Buryat pantheon live in cliffs of the island. Spirits reside in trees, posts, and rocks referred to as obos, and are often draped in colourful rags. It is customary to place coins, cigarettes, and vodka on the ground, as gifts. A lot of legends about Olkhon and its sacred places are passed down from generation to generation. One of the legends says that Genghis Khan was buried here.

Lake Baikal Cruise

Also called Burkhan Cape, Shaman Rock, a sacred place in Khuzhir, is believed to have supernatural powers by shamans and is one of the main tourist attractions on the island. It especially mesmerising at the sunrise or sunset. Another beautiful spot on Olkhon is Khoboy Cape. It is the most northern point of Olkhon island, a very beautiful spot where you can see the panorama view of the lake, cliffs, seagulls, and sometimes, if youíre lucky, even Baikal seals. The scenic bus-tour from Khuzhir to the cape and back with many stops and walks will take almost all day, though the road is unsealed and bumpy, the experience is definitely worth it.

Plan 3-4 days of staying at Olkhon for different activities such as kayaking, biking, hiking, or just strolling around the island and enjoying its special energy. Or join the group tour with guaranteed departures to explore the Olkhon Island and other attractions around Baikal.

8. Ogoy Island, Lake Baikal

A small island with an eight-metre-high Buddhist stupa of Enlightenment was raised at the highest point. A Buddhist stupa and an object of worship that means “support for gifts”. There are only two stupas in Russia – on Lake Baikal and in the Kalmykia Republic. It is believed that if you go around the stupa three times expressing your respect to it and make a wish, it will come true. There is only one condition: the thoughts of the person who makes a wish should be pure.

Lake Baikal Ice Adventure Russia tour

Embark on a boat trip to Ogoy in Summer or visit this small island by a 4wd car crossing the ice in Winter. During this trip, you will cross the Maloye Morye passing close by its islands and see amazing scenery of Lake Baikal.

9. Ulan-Ude city

The appealing capital of Buryatia, ‘UU’ is 456km east of Irkutsk by rail and makes a sensible staging post for visiting Mongolia or eastern Lake Baikal. The city prospered as a major stop on the tea-caravan route from China, Ulan means ‘Red’ in Buryat, yet Ulan-Ude is pleasantly green, cradled attractively in rolling hills. The main attractions in Ulan-Ude are the two museums (of history and of nature), villages of old-believers and the Ivolginsky Buddhist Datsan.

Trans-Siberian tour

The home to the epicentre of Buddhism in Russia the mysterious Ivolginksy Datsan; along with the awe of the elaborately decorated temples is the phenomenon that is the preserved body of Khambo Lama, formally Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov. His education into the Buddhist teachings and conviction enabled Itigilov to pursue the greatest constituent of his faith, becoming Khambo Lama, the head of Buddhism in Russia. The monastery attracts visitors year-round allowing the public to be enlightened by the Buddhist history, Meditation and the Buddhist faith.

10. Winter activities on Lake Baikal

The real fun starts between late January and mid-April when the surface of Lake Baikal is frozen . Hovercrafts, ice bikes, dog sleds, ice-golf and pretty much anything else you can imagine. Don’t forget to take a dip in the healing waters offshore, reputed to be Siberia’s own fountain of youth.

It’s also the best time for landscape photography . Summer sees the bulk of tourist activity in the area, but it’s in winter that the most devoted photographers make the pilgrimage, hoping to capture once-in-a-lifetime images of the natural world at its most powerful and surreal. Exploring the lake’s numerous islands will reveal hidden grottoes and frozen caves where intricate ice formations make for otherworldly photo subjects

How to get to Lake Baikal

The closest airport to the western shore of Baikal is Irkutsk. There are regular flights from the major Russian cities to Irkutsk, including from Moscow, St Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk and Vladivostok. There are also several flights a week to Irkutsk from Beijing and occasional flights from Bangkok, Hong Kong and seasonally, twice a week from Seoul. For the western shore of Lake Baikal, the closest airport is Ulan-Ude. It’s a smaller airport, serviced by flights from Moscow and the larger Siberian airports, as well as flights from Beijing.

Most travellers arriving in Lake Baikal overland get to the region via the famous Trans-Siberian Railway, typically departing from Moscow, Vladivostok or Beijing.

Best time to go to Baikal

Baikal’s climate is much milder than that of the surrounding territory. Winter air temperatures average −21 °C, and August temperatures average +15 °C. Summer months from June to August is the most popular time for visiting Lake Baikal, with July being the busiest one, and sometimes overcrowded. September brings beautiful autumn colours to the Taiga forest, which make this stunning region even more beautiful, however, most group tours have last departures just in the beginning of Setpenerb, so if you’d like to join these organised tours, plan your trip not later than 10 September.

The ice freezes the 20 km distance to shore between January and April simultaneously isolating the island from boat traffic while paving the way for one of the most amazing ice treks imaginable. From mid-February till the end of April, there are several departures for the Lake Baikal Ice adventure , which is the most popular tour to join in winter and enjoy the unbelievable beauty of this frozen natural wonder.

In May, the ice melting and the forests start blooming. While this month is still a bit chilly, it’s a wonderful time to explore the beauty of Lake Baikal, while there are no many tourists around.

Shoulder season months of October and November are not recommended for travelling. While lake starts freezing in December, together with January they are the coldest winter months, also, the ice is not thick enough for traversing, so if you’d like to enjoy the winter holiday, consider the end of February – mid-April.

Learn more about Bali

Local culture.

Between the 12th and 20th centuries, Bali has often been treated as a pawn in the games of kings, rajahs and generals. More often than not, its fate has been closely tied to neighboring Lombok with fierce battles between the two islands over the centuries as different rulers vied for regional dominance. This history of varied occupation can be seen in Bali today, with elements of Hinduism and Islam present in modern Balinese society. However, there is no historical animosity between the religions, or even between the islands of Lombok and Bali.

One of the defining moments in Bali’s history took place in the 16th century when the collapse of the Majapahit dynasty encouraged the spread of Islam from the surrounding states into the Javanese kingdom. Rather than live under Islamic rule, many Hindu elites chose to escape to Bali. These elites included many artists, dancers, musicians, actors and court-supported artisans, as well as some more artistically inclined priests. The result was an intense proliferation of cultural arts across Bali, no doubt inspired by rich Balinese folklore featuring epic battles of good and evil, gods and mortals. This reputation persists today, with many travelers falling in love with the island’s intricate temple carvings, dance performances, colorful sarongs and handicrafts.

When you combine a love of arts with world-class beaches and deliciously fiery sambals, it’s no surprise Bali’s tourism industry is soaring. It’s not unusual for someone to ask you whether this is your second, third or fourth visit to the island. Many locals rely on tourism to some extent, either by working as tour operators or running hotels, yoga studios, massage parlors, bars, cafes or restaurants.

The destination’s popularity with  Australians  means there’s a gradual cultural creep in larger cities like Seminyak, where Melbourne-style cafes and international clothing labels are particularly popular. If you escape the resorts and head further north from Denpasar, you’re more likely to encounter traditional warungs (eateries) and villages untouched by tourism sprawl.

One last word of advice: always watch where you put your feet. Locals will traditionally place small offerings on the footpaths outside their homes or businesses up to three times a day. 83.5% of the population identifies as Hindu and religion plays a large part in Balinese life. In fact, there is a small religious ceremony associated with just about every aspect of Balinese culture, whether it’s the beginning of a soccer game, celebrating the full moon or cleaning the house.

Food and drink

At first glance it might seem difficult to pinpoint Bali’s exact culinary identity. The mishmash of Indonesian and pan-Asian influences means you’re likely to come across menus that sometimes feel part Thai, Malaysian, Indian and Vietnamese. But no matter what you order, the food will always be fresh and bursting with flavor. Dishes are typically made fresh each day, with curries and pastes prepared by hand using traditional methods.

The most authentic food in Bali is usually found streetside at eateries called warungs. Warungs are common in every village and city, and a good place for a quick feed on a budget. Many will specialize in a small menu of popular local dishes.

Top foods to try in Bali

Babi guling:  This is slow cooking Balinese-style. A whole pig is stuffed with chilli, turmeric, ginger, galangal, shallots, garlic, coriander seeds and aromatic leaves and rotated over an open fire. This dish is commonly seen at celebrations.

Satay:  Sometimes spelt ‘sate’ on local menus, Indonesia is famous for its tasty meat skewers (usually chicken) cooked over hot coals and slathered in moreish peanut sauce.

Nasi campur:  Nasi campur feels like a bit of a buffet. Your plate typically comes with a scoop of nasi putih accompanied by small portions of a number of other dishes, including meats, vegetables, peanuts, eggs, and fried-shrimp krupuk.

Nasi goreng:  The old favorite among tertiary students is nothing like the local version. Nasi goreng, literally meaning "fried rice”, is a popular rice dish with pieces of meat and vegetables, and a fried egg added on top.

Sambal:  A fiery paste made using a chili base smashed with secondary ingredients like shrimp paste, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, shallot, scallion, palm sugar, lime juice, and rice vinegar.

Learn more about some of the dishes to try in Bali

Eating vegetarian in Bali

Going vegetarian is relatively easy in Bali as many dishes are already meat-free. Tofu and tempeh are also a standard part of the local diet. Key vegetarian dishes to look out for include nasi saur (rice flavored with toasted coconut and accompanied by tofu, tempeh, vegetables and sometimes egg), urap (steamed vegetables mixed with grated coconut and spices), gado gado (tofu and tempeh mixed with steamed vegetables, boiled egg and peanut sauce) and sayur hijau (leafy green vegetables, usually kangkung – water spinach – flavored with a tomato-chilli sauce).

The abundance of fresh fruits in Bali means you can buy fresh coconuts and juices (or fruity cocktails) almost anywhere you go. If you're looking for something with a bit more punch then you could order a Bintang, the national larger or maybe arak – a local liquor made from fermented rice and coconut palm flowers.

Festivals and events

Many festivals in the Balinese calendar revolve around religious and spiritual occasions marked by periods of prayer or silence, and followed by lots of festivities and feasting. Some festivals might be inconvenient for travelers, such as the Day of Silence, but they’re also a great opportunity to gain an insight into local life that many don’t get to see.

Multiple surf contests are held throughout the year at different times and in different places. Check with local surfing schools for up to date information.

Top festivals in Bali

Nyepi (Day of Silence):  Bali’s major Hindu festival, Nyepi, or the Day of Silence, celebrates the beginning of a new year and is marked by inactivity. Legends say that this is a strategy to convince evil spirits that Bali is uninhabited and therefore not worthy of visiting! Jokes on them. The day involves prayer, meditation and quiet reflection.

Bali Arts Festival:  For an island with a strong history of cultural arts, it’s no surprise the Bali Arts Festival has pride of place in the annual calendar. Based at the Taman Wedhi Budaya arts center in Denpasar, travelers can see village-based dance groups competing for local pride across several traditional dance categories. The date changes each year but is typically held between mid-June to mid-July.

Bali Kite Festival:  From July to October, the skies of southern Bali fill with huge, colorful monsters, critters and imaginative creations. Scores of kites are launched by the locals as part of this special spiritual event. It is believed the kites urge the gods to provide abundant harvests.

Indonesian Independence Day:  Held on 17 August each year, this day celebrates Indonesia's independence from the Dutch in 1945. Expect to see legions of marching school children, flags, kites and fireworks. Don’t expect to get anywhere quickly either on the day or the days leading up to it.

Galungan and Kuningan:  Galungan celebrates the death of a legendary tyrant called Mayadenawa. The celebrations come to a head with the Kuningan festival, which is when the Balinese say thanks and goodbye to the gods. The exact dates of these two festivals vary as they are planned using the 210-day wuku (or Pawukon) calendar.

Geography and environment

Bali is undoubtedly Indonesia’s most popular province thanks to its abundance of beautiful beaches, leafy jungles and impressive mountains. Located just east of Java and west of Lombok, the Bali province includes not only the island of Bali but also a few of the smaller neighboring islands, such as Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.

Bali's highest mountain is Mt Agung (3,031 m, 9,944 ft), which is also known as the "Mother Mountain”. One of the other popular volcanoes on the island is Mt Batur. Both of these volcanoes have contributed to Bali’s incredibly fertile soil, which has allowed the rice crop trade to flourish.

Bali is located just 8 degrees south of the equator, which means it enjoys a fairly even climate year-round. The average year-round temperature hovers around 86°F, with a humidity level of about 85%. It's also surrounded by coral reefs and is part of the Coral Triangle, an area with the highest biodiversity of marine species. Over 500 reef-building coral species can be found here, which is seven times the entire Caribbean.

Bali’s problems with environmental pollution are well-documented, and it’s fair to say that the nearly 5.7 million tourists who visit annually are contributing their fair share. In late 2017, Indonesian officials declared a “garbage emergency” after a tide of plastic washed up a 5.8 kilometer (3.6 mile) stretch of coastline. We encourage all travelers to carry a reusable plastic bottle with them, a reusable tote bag for carrying items and to try and minimize their use of plastics wherever possible.

While you’ll find many of the main tourism hubs, like Seminyak and Kuta, filled with international fashion labels, there are also many local boutiques offering a wide variety of hand-made goods. These include traditional wood carvings (and even some famously phallic bottle openers), silver jewelry, colorful sarongs, eco-friendly bags, bamboo satchels, recycled furniture and a near limitless range of body oils and fragrances. Of course, if you’re looking for a traditional ‘I Heart Bali’ t-shirt or Bintang singlet, these are never in short supply either.

Like many parts of South East Asia, bargaining is a big part of the local shopping experience. Getting a good price comes down to how well you can haggle, but it’s important to have fun, bargain in good faith, and remember to smile. You’ll usually find better prices, and more negotiable shop owners, away from the main tourist strips.

Bali travel faqs, when is the best time to visit bali.

Sitting a snug 8 degrees from the equator, Bali’s climate is classic tropics. There’s a dry season and a rainy season, and not a whole lot in between.

The best time for a Bali tour (weather-wise) is the July to August peak season, or from December to the first week of January.

Although if you’d like to avoid the crowds (and why wouldn’t you) shoulder months like April, May, June and September make an excellent alternative.

The weather is dry and slightly less humid, and the island in general is a lot more relaxed.

October isn’t too bad either, especially if you’re into water sports like scuba diving, surfing or snorkeling (the rainfall is much lighter than in November).

Do you need a visa for a Bali tour?

The short answer is maybe – depending on your nationality. Passport holders from over 60 countries (including the   UK ,   Australia   and the   United States ) can enter Indonesia with a free tourist visa on arrival which allows you to stay for 30 days for tourism purposes. An immigration officer will date stamp your passport when you arrive and you will not be able to extend your stay. If you overstay there are hefty fines of IDR 1,000,000 (approximately 70 USD) per day.

If there's a chance you might want to stay longer than 30 days, you'll need to pay for a visa on arrival or apply for one prior to traveling at an overseas Indonesian consulate or embassy.

To enter Bali, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:

  • proof of onward or return ticket
  • proof of funds to pay for your expenses during your trip
  • completed immigration card (this will usually be given to you on the plane or at the arrival terminal)

Local laws require that you must be able to show your valid passport at any time when required to do so by an immigration office. We recommend taking a clear photocopy of your passport photo page, and visa (after arriving), to carry with you.

This page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Should I tip on a Bali tour?

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Bali, or anywhere else in Indonesia. But, like most countries, it’s very much appreciated.

Remember that many Balinese rely on tourism as a main source of income, and a tip is always appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Bali?

In tourist centers like Kuta, Seminyak, Denpasar, and Lovina internet access should be fine, and there will be plenty of internet cafes (or cafes with free internet) to choose from if your Wi-Fi isn’t up to scratch.

In more rural areas, there could be little or no coverage, particularly during homestays. Just remember to plan ahead.

What are the toilets like in Bali?

Restaurants and hotels in developed tourist centers will have Western-style flush toilets.

In more rural areas the traditional squat toilet will be more common.

We recommend packing a bottle of hand sanitizer if you plan to visit rural parts of Bali.

Can I drink the water on a Bali tour?

Drinking water from taps isn’t recommended in Indonesia, but for environmental reasons try to avoid buying bottled water every day. There are a number of filtered canteens you can purchase or bring a supply of water filtration tablets that you can drop into your bottle wherever you go.

If you’re traveling on an Intrepid Travel trip, we always carry with us a large drum of water in our truck to refill your bottles on the road. Our hotel operators will also provide water free of charge to refill your bottles.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Bali?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants in Bali.

T hey may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as small family restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas.

Make sure you carry enough cash for purchases since credit cards aren't always an option everywhere in Bali.

What is ATM access like in Indonesia?

ATMs are found widely throughout Bali, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic in most areas. Some smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so be prepared for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

LGBTQIA+ travel in Bali

Homosexuality is legal in most of Indonesia, however, revisions to Indonesia’s criminal code are currently being considered that would criminalize gay sex and same-sex relationships. Advocacy groups fear this would represent a profound setback to human rights in Indonesia as a result. The LGBTQIA+ community has also been known to be targeted and harassed by police.

Bali, with its Hindu majority, has always been more liberal, tolerant and relaxed in attitude, however, public displays of affection are still not the norm for any couples anywhere in the country. Upscale hotels will likely not have any issues with same-sex travelers sharing a bed, however, if you are staying in budget or family-run businesses and are allocated separate beds, you might feel more comfortable not drawing attention to your relationship.

Because sex, in general, is a taboo subject in Indonesian society, the issue of sexuality is unlikely to arise while traveling here. Indonesia is generally safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers, provided you are willing to be discreet and cautious with public behavior.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Ornithological expedition to Lake Baikal | The pearl of Siberia!

Lake Baikal by Machiel Valkenburg

SPIRITUAL. PURE. NATURAL.

We have developed and have been running a birding-focused venture into Central Siberia for over a decade. Baikal is known as the pearl of Siberia. A seldom-visited region located in central Russia, full of authenticity and highly appealing birdlife. The Baikal is a unique part of Russia, where natural conditions create a fantastic variety of landscapes and habitats. High snowcapped peaks meet a substantial freshwater reservoir, while the immense Siberian taiga borders areas of the tremendous vast steppe.

The avifauna of these places is rewarding. The habitats attract many uncommon representatives of buntings, thrush, and warblers. Another drawcard for this region is its position on a major migration route, making it especially attractive during spring and autumn. Our tour takes a fascinating journey into the realm of Siberian Rubythroat, Eyebrowed and Siberian Thrushes, Rufous-tailed Robin, Siberian Blue Robin, and many other beautiful birds.

Meet your leader

Our expedition to Lake Baikal is led by our longstanding and senior leader Alexander Povarintsev . A Siberian native and resident of Irkutsk, a city on the western shores of the lake, makes him the best option for any ornithological expedition in Baikal or Siberia!

YOUR RUSSIA LAKE BAIKAL ITINERARY

Day 1 | Arrival in Irkutsk

Clients depart from home towards the most significant city near Lake Baikal, Irkutsk. For those who wish to arrive early, please contact the RBT office and we will gladly help you with extra hotel arrangements.

NIGHT | On aircraft.

Day 2 | Irkutsk

Epiphany-church-in-irkutsk

We will meet for breakfast at 9am in the Marriott Hotel lobby, keen to embark on this unique Siberian adventure. Our first day is spent exploring this fantastic city, sometimes called ‘the Paris of Siberia’. Many of the ancient wooden buildings have been preserved and showcase ornate and hand-carved decorations. The centre of the city is located on the tentative list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We will take a guided city excursion, exploring the old city centre, walk along the Angara River, and we will visit, among other landmarks, the Epiphany Cathedral.

NIGHT | **** Marriott Irkutsk City Center Hotel, Irkutsk.

Day 3 | Novo-Leninskiy Marshes; afternoon transfer to Bolshoye Goloustnoye

We start our venture with a visit to the Novo-Leninskiy Marshes (New Lenin Marsh). This wetland is located within the city limits and consists of many overgrown lakes with reeds, and moist meadows filled with territorial birds. These lakes are teeming with various waterfowl, sometimes Falcated Duck is even found here, but the undisputed star of the show here is Yellow-breasted Bunting. Males can be heard singing right across the marsh. Nearby we can see and hear Common Reed Bunting and Black-faced Bunting as well. This is one of the best places to encounter the mysterious Pallas´s Grasshopper Warbler, while Eastern Marsh Harrier patrols the reedbeds, and we will search for the diminutive Baillon´s Crake. Long-tailed Rosefinch, Azure Tit and many other exciting species are frequent visitors to this area.

Bolshoye Goloustnoye is a small Siberian village located two hours from Irkutsk. The town has approximately 700 residents of whom most have lived all their lives here. All the buildings are built in a classic wooden style, with the road leading to the town being equally primitive! Our first stop is the meadows of the Ushakovka River, a regular haunt of Swinhoe’s Snipe which gives its aerial display flight above the fields. Mature trees attract Black Woodpeckers, and Swinhoe’s Robin and Red-flanked Bluetail can be seen in patches of pine. The open meadows are inhabited by Brown Shrike, and we will be keeping an eye on the sky for Booted Eagles and Crested Honey Buzzards. Back in the village, we will check in to our attractive guesthouse near Lake Baikal.

NIGHT | Russkoye Podvorye Resort, Bolshoye Goloustnoye.

birding-photo-tours-in-central-asia

Day 4 | Bolshoye Goloustnoye

birdwatching-tours

Dawn is early, and we start with a visit to the dense Taiga forest. This is the habitat of some classic and beautiful Siberian birds. Here we can find Pallas´s Leaf Warbler, Yellow-browed Warbler, Orange-flanked Bush-robin, White´s Thrush and even Rufous-tailed (Swinhoe´s) Robin are sometimes seen. Woodpeckers are frequently observed, Black, Gray-headed and Little Spotted Woodpecker are all possible. Buntings are the dessert, with the magnificent Chestnut, and Yellow-browed Buntings being the most prominent targets. After breakfast, we will visit some captivating taiga meadows in a small river valley, with colourful wildflowers and an extensive selection of butterflies on offer. Here Gray´s Grasshopper Warbler, Lanceolated Warbler, Baikal Grasshopper Warbler, Chinese Grasshopper Warbler, as well as Naumann´s, Dusky, and Red-throated Thrush are the key targets.

After an afternoon break, we will enjoy a leisurely walk in the village to have a closer look at the traditional wooden houses. We will have an excellent chance to come across birds like Hill Pigeon, Barn Swallow of the race ‘tytleri’ (all red belly and breast) and Lesser Whitethroat. On the nearby open grassland plains, Blyth’s Pipit and Thick-billed Warblers are breeding. A colony of handsome Daurian Jackdaws will undoubtedly receive a lot of attention as well! In the evening we return to our guesthouse where we will enjoy a delicious local meal.

Day 5 | Bolshoye Goloustnoye to Arshan (380km or 240 miles)

In the morning, we start driving towards the village of Arshan, which is renowned for its mineral springs. During the drive, we make several stops where Pallas’s Warbler and Siberian Chiffchaff will hopefully be added to our list. The Siberian Chipmunk is one of the smaller mammals living in the Taiga forest; it is the only species of Chipmunk found outside of North America, and we have a good chance of finding it near Arshan. After a long day of driving, we arrive in the early evening at the small resort village of Arshan.

NIGHT | Tuyana Hotel, Arshan.

photo-tours-in-russia

Day 6 | Tunka Marshes

rubythroat-birding-tours

Today we visit the Tunka Marshes, an area of snow-capped peaks, woodland patches, grassy meadows and several small lakes with reedy margins. Before reaching Tunka, an area of bushes are worth checking for Siberian Rubythroat, Tree Pipit and Pine Bunting. In the meadows, Richard’s Pipits are common, while stands of trees and scrub hold Eurasian Wryneck, Northern and Brown Shrikes and perhaps a Thick-billed Warbler. A walk around Tunka Marshes may reveal Eurasian Bittern, Stejneger’s Scoter, Common Pochard, Greater Spotted Eagle, White-winged Tern, Siberian Stonechat and singing Yellow-breasted Buntings. Tunka is also reliable for calling Japanese Quails, although our chances of seeing one are slim. Scarcer birds occurring at Tunka include Black Grouse, White-tailed Eagle, Eastern Buzzard and Little Gull. In the evening we return to Arshan, here we will visit the magnificent preserved Buddhist temple of Bodhidharma or Hoymorsky Datsan.

Day 7-8 | Sayan Mountains

In the morning we leave beautiful Arshan behind us and head west along a picturesque road. We travel through a valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks, to eventually climb up a mountain plateau near the border with Mongolia. This scenic area is located at the base of the highest mountain of the Eastern Sayan – Mount Munku Sardyk (3,491 m). Here we will seek out the elegant Red-throated Thrush and Güldenstädt’s Redstart, but the main goal has to be Pallas’s Rosefinch. All three of these species are undoubted stunners, but the latter is probably the most amazing. The rosefinch has a deep pinkish-brown colour with white primaries and a subtle light pinkish throat patch. In tracts of birch forest, we will many Two-barred Warblers frantically calling. There are no hotels in this mountainous region, and as such we have organized a cosy tented camp for our time here. Our meals will be cooked over an open fire with an endless glittering sky above our heads!

NIGHT | Private Tented camp, Arshan Mountains.

Day 9 | Sayan to Teply Ozero

wildflower-tours-in-central-asia

We will have a final walk around our camp before we leave Sayan and drive to the southern shores of Lake Baikal. Along streams and mountain rivers in this area we often see White-throated Dippers – this is also the habitat of a rare and mysterious bird, the Solitary Snipe. It favours fast-flowing streams at high elevations and is tricky to spot. If we are lucky, we may find the odd pair of Asian Rosy-Finch here. During our drive, we stop to visit the small village of Kudrino where the gardens hold birds like Daurian and Common Redstarts, Eurasian Nuthatch and Azure-winged Magpie. An area of forest nearby may be productive for the scarce Siberian Bush Warbler, Olive-backed Pipit, Lanceolated Warbler and Common Rosefinch. Stands of silver birch dominate the place where we should locate the attractive Chestnut Bunting, Oriental Turtle Dove, Eurasian and Baikal Bullfinches, Hawfinch, and various Woodpeckers. We expect to arrive at our hotel near Teply Ozero in the early evening. We will spend three nights here on the shores of Lake Baikal.

NIGHT | Belosnezka Hotel, Vydrino Village

Day 10-11 | Birding at Teply Ozero

Birding in this fabulous place is something that must be experienced to believe. The location, between Lake Baikal and a nearby high mountain range, creates the wettest area in southern Siberia. These conditions produce an area of unique vegetation. A combination of dark coniferous taiga with relic poplar forests makes the Teply Ozero area prosperous for wildlife. Be prepared for a plethora of new species – Oriental Cuckoo, White-backed, Three-toed and Grey-headed Woodpeckers, Red-flanked Bluetail, Olive-backed Pipit, Dark-sided, Asian Brown, Mugimaki and Taiga Flycatchers, Radde’s, Arctic, Yellow-browed, Pallas’s, and Two-barred Greenish Warblers, Siberian Blue and Swinhoe’s Robins, and Black-faced Bunting. Uncommon species known to occur in these forests include Yellow-browed Bunting, Siberian Jay, White’s, Eye-browed and Siberian Thrushes and, above the forest, White-throated Needletails. In the evenings we will wait for beautiful views over Lake Baikal as well as some short forays in search of Ural Owl, Great Grey Owl and Boreal Owl.

NIGHT | Belosnezka Hotel, Vydrino Village.

Day 12 | Teply Ozero to Ulan-Ude

Taiga-birding-tours

In the morning we will make one more visit to Teply Ozero before we set sails for the Buryat capital of Ulan-Ude. This is a region dominated by steppe, salt lakes and small river valleys. This is a markedly different landscape from what we have previously witnessed. On the way, we will make several stops for birding, with a chance to find the rare and handsome Chestnut-eared Bunting. We will reach Buryatia in the early evening. Buryats are another indigenous people of Siberia, closely related to the Mongols that live to the south. Once in the city, we immediately feel its local flavour which will add colour to our journey. In the evening we can take a short walk to visit the largest Lenin-head statue in the world. We end a long day with a delicious local flavoured dinner.

NIGHT | *** Baikal Plaza, Ulan-Ude.

Days 13 | Ulan-Ude to Beloozersk

This morning we travel southwest towards the city of Beloozersk for a two-night stay, promising a whole new set of birds. En route, we will stop at an area of riverside woodland where we may reveal more Radde’s Warblers, Siberian Rubythroat, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Brown Shrike and Long-tailed Rosefinches. Our journey takes us to a large wetland with vast reedbeds and attractive waterlilies. This is an important area for birds with the open waters attracting ducks including Asiatic White-winged Scoter, Falcated Duck, Eastern Spot-billed Duck, Black-necked Grebe and rafts of Common Goldeneye. Raptors use the area regularly, and sightings include Eastern Marsh, Hen and possibly Pied Harriers. In the stands of reeds, we should hear the eastern race of Water Rail and observe Oriental Reed, and, on occasion, Paddyfield Warbler. The dry country surrounding the lake attracts Citrine and Eastern Yellow Wagtails, Asian Short-toed and Greater Short-toed Larks. We end the day birding along the road towards Beloozersk, with impressive Eastern Imperial Eagle, Amur Falcon, Isabelline Wheatear and Rock Petronia all possible.

In the evening we will arrive at the private house of our caring hostess. Like the Arshan Mountains, there are no hotels or guesthouses available here, and so we have sought the cooperation of some helpful local people to assist us with our stay – this is the pure essence of ecotourism. We will be lodging in their private house and be provided with local home-cooked meals throughout.

NIGHT | Private residence, Beloozersk.

Machiel-valkenburg-vent-tours

Day 14 | Birding the steppe of Beloozersk

tours-to-russia

An early start will see us arrive at an area of salt lakes near the village. This is a great place, with a high concentration of ducks and waders at this time of year. At times there are so many Ruddy Shelducks present that parts of the lake appear red! Alongside the numerous shelduck, we may find Whooper Swan, Slavonian and Black-necked Grebes and numerous ducks which may include small numbers of Long-tailed Duck and Smew. The open steppe habitat attracts Demoiselle Crane, Cinereous Vulture, Steppe Eagle, Upland Buzzard and Eurasian Hobby. In the tall grasslands, colourful Mongolian Larks are breeding, with males continually displaying. Blyth’s Pipit and Pallas’s Reed Bunting can be found nesting on the shores and in tall tufts of grass. The lakes here occasionally hold the very rare Swan Goose. On the muddy margins of the lake, we may find migrant shorebirds including Pacific Golden Plover, Red-necked, Long-toed and Temminck’s Stints, Eastern Black-tailed Godwit, Marsh Sandpiper, Pied Avocet and Little Ringed Plover. A walk-through riverside woodlands gives a good chance of finding migrant passerines, resting after a night of migration. On the ground, Daurian Partridge may be sighted scuttling away from us, while Golden Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Azure Tit, Meadow and Black-faced Buntings are omnipresent. Upland Buzzards and even Saker Falcon can usually be found on the electrical pylons nearby. All in all, a great day awaits us!

Day 15 | Beloozersk to Ulan-Ude

We do some final birding, revisiting the regions of the previous days. In the afternoon we have the option to visit the Ivolginskiy Datsan, the only Buddhistic spiritual centre of the former USSR. Eventually, we return to Ulan-Ude, where the tour concludes with a grand final dinner.

BEST BIRDING SITES OF LAKE BAIKAL

During this trip, we will visit two different areas within the Baikal – the Irkutsk Oblast, and the Republic of Buryatia. These are huge territorial landmasses, each larger than any of the Western European countries. For this reason, we will only be able to partially explore the extent of these areas in the time allotted to us. However, we will undoubtedly visit the most exciting sites on offer. Our trip is designed to cover the maximum variety of landscapes and see as many birds as possible. And we are always near the magical Lake Baikal, the deepest and cleanest freshwater lake on the planet. Her beauty will accompany us throughout the journey.
