Uluru Tours & Holidays

Two women stand in front of Uluru, having their picture taken during a bright red sunset

From traditional bush medicine to birthing caves, sacred waterholes to rock art, discover why Uluru and Kata Tjuta are the spiritual heart of Australia.

Standing 348 metres tall in the middle of an otherwise flat desert, Uluru is the coolest monolith you’ll probably ever see. But here’s the thing: Uluru’s so much more than a monolith—it’s a living landscape that holds 60,000 years of Anangu history, stories and culture. Join us on a Red Centre adventure to hike through 300-million-year-old canyons and gorges, listen and learn from  First Nations  guides, and watch these sacred sites come to life. If the fluorescent glow of Uluru at sunset doesn’t take your breath away, the glittering night sky certainly will.

Who are the traditional owners of Uluru?

The Anangu (pronounced  arn-ung-oo ) people are the traditional owners of  Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park  and other regions of the Central Western desert.

They've been custodians of the land for over 60,000 years and are one of the world's oldest living cultures.

For the Anangu people, Uluru and Kata Tjuta are places of deep spiritual connection; they are physical evidence of Tjukurpa (the creation period) and the ancestral spirits who reside in the land.

How do I get to Uluru?

All of our Uluru trips start in Yulara (a resort town on the outskirts of  Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park ) or Alice Springs. The quickest way to get to Uluru is to fly to Yulara. You can fly direct from a few Australian cities including Melbourne, Sydney and Cairns with Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia.

You can fly direct to Alice Springs from most major Australian cities including Brisbane, Darwin and Adelaide (flights are generally more frequent from Alice than Yulara). From here, it's a 465 km (5.5 hours) drive to Uluru.

If your tour finishes in Yulara, we can drop you off in Alice Springs (at no additional cost), with an arrival back in town at around 6:30 pm.

Is climbing Uluru banned?

Yes, climbing Uluru was banned permanently on 26 October 2019 to respect the traditional owners and the  spiritual significance  of the site. The Anangu people have been holding spiritual and cultural ceremonies at Uluru for tens of thousands of years, and climbing is not generally allowed under Tjukurpa (Anangu law and culture). We think the views are better from down below, anyway.

Can I drink tap water in the Red Centre?

Yes, drinking tap water is safe in Alice Springs, Yulara and throughout the Red Centre. Ensure you bring a 1-2 litre reusable water bottle to refill at the water stations dotted around Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Staying hydrated is important as the Outback sun is intense and you'll be doing a fair bit of walking during the day.

Are there ATMs in the Red Centre?

You can withdraw cash at a number of ATMs in Alice Springs. There's also an ATM in the Town Square at Ayers Rock Resort in Yulara. Most of the highway roadhouses will have an ATM or the option to get cashback.

What should I pack for Uluru?

Layering is key in the Outback. The days are warm or hot all year so t-shirts and shorts are fine, however the temperature can drop at night so you'll need long pants and a warm jumper and/or jacket for sunrise and sunset. You’ll also need a comfy pair of walking shoes, a wide-brimmed sun hat, a day pack, sunscreen, lip balm and a reusable water bottle.

When's the best time to visit Uluru?

Uluru is awe-inspiring come rain or shine, but the best time to visit is generally between May and September when the days are dry and warm (but not scorching). Uluru sits in a semi-arid desert climate zone, so summer is sweltering with occasional storms (the amount of rainfall varies from year to year), while winter is warm and dry during the day with cold nighttime temps that often plummet below zero.

Is Uluru also called Ayers Rock?

You may have heard Australia's most famous landmark also being called Ayers Rock. However, the traditional custodians of Uluru, the Anangu people, have always called it Uluru. The first non-Aboriginal person to see Uluru was explorer William Gosse in 1873. He named it Ayers Rock in honour of his superior Sir Henry Ayers, the Chief Secretary of South Australia.

The rock was officially renamed Ayers Rock / Uluru in 1993, but it was renamed again in 2002 to Uluru / Ayers Rock to show respect for the Anangu people and acknowledge their custodianship of the land. We use the traditional name for this reason, and you'll also see the traditional name used throughout the national park.

The word 'Uluru' comes from the Pitjantjatjara language and has no direct English translation.

How will we travel around the Red Centre?

The Red Centre covers a huge, very remote area of Central Australia. We'll spend many hours driving from A to B in an air-conditioned vehicle. Make sure you bring ample snacks and maybe a few podcasts to listen to – or use it as an opportunity to get to know your fellow travellers. With a comfortable, air-conditioned bus, sit back and enjoy the unique desert landscapes that you'd miss in any other form of travel.

What's the accommodation like?

It depends on the trip style you choose. Our Basix and Original trips feature simple (but comfy) camping accommodation in permanent or semi-permanent tents with stretcher beds and shared facilities, or a mixture of camping and budget hotels.

If you choose a Comfort or Premium trip, you'll stay in 3-to-4-star hotels and resorts with private amenities.

Can I use my mobile phone at Uluru?

Mobile phone and data signal within Ayers Rock Resort and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is pretty good (Ayers Rock Resort also offers free Wi-Fi). You can usually pick up a few bars at the roadhouses, too, although some network providers tend to be better than others.

Expect the signal to be patchy or completely cut off when you're on the road or exploring more remote places like Kings Canyon or Tjoritja/West MacDonnell National Park. But hey, with views like these, we don't think you'll mind switching off for a few days.

Do I need to bring cash?

You can use a credit or debit card for purchases in most roadhouses, shops and restaurants in the Red Centre. However, it's always handy to have cash for smaller purchases.

You might also want to withdraw money if you're interested in buying artwork from local First Nations artists. Artists often sell beautiful, hand-painted tapestries in the gardens near Town Square in Ayers Rock Resort, and at the sunset viewing area. It's a great way to take a little piece of Uluru home with you.

What are some interesting facts about Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park?

  • The formations are approximately 500 million years old
  • The rock (Uluru) you see is only the tip of the, er, monolith. The rock mass extends up to 6 kilometres underground
  • Uluru is 348 meters tall (for reference, that's taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Chrysler Building in New York or the Eureka Tower in Melbourne)
  • The circumference of Uluru is 9.4 km and it takes around 3 to 4 hours to walk depending on your fitness level
  • The traditional owners of Uluru and Kata Tjuta are the Anangu people
  • Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is home to over 400 plant species and 21 species of mammals
  • The rocks get their orangey-red colour from the oxidized iron minerals

Are there things I can't do at Uluru?

Uluru is often referred to as the spiritual heart of Australia, not only because of its middle-of-the-country location but also for its great significance to Australia’s First Nations people (and more specifically to the Anangu, the traditional owners of Uluru). And for this reason, there are restrictions on what you can and can't do at Uluru. These restrictions include taking photos at sacred sites, swimming in waterholes around the base, and not calling Uluru by its colonised name, Ayers Rock.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Red centre, western australia, kimberley & top end.

  • Northern Territory

Even if you’re not one generally riveted by geology, sideline your reservations until you visit Uluru. Standing at 348 metres high, 10 kilometres in circumference and concealing caves, cascades and rock art in its folds, this is as spectacular as sandstone gets.

First Nations  connections to country here run deep; something that we try to impress on all travellers on our Uluru tours through various organised intercultural exchanges. It’s why, in 1998, we were among the first tour operators to stop climbing the rock (and why we’re thrilled that the practice has now been banned altogether). As any Territorian will tell you, it’s the stories behind Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Watarrka that really bring these sacred sites to life.

Our tours of Uluru will have you immersed in the rich history of the region. We can take you from Uluru to  Alice Springs , or if you prefer, Alice Springs to Uluru – the choice is yours. Either way, you’ll have your mind blown! Browse our wide range of Uluru tours and start planning your holiday today.

Budget Uluru Tours

Upgraded uluru tours, other red centre highlights.

Uluru may well be this region’s best-known attraction, but by no means is it the only one. Here’s a quick guide to some of the outback’s other great rock stars.

The Olgas, Kata Tjuta National Park

Kata Tjuta (The Olgas)

A grouping of 36 giant red rock domes located 25 kilometres east of Uluru. The tallest of Kata Tjuta’s ‘many heads’ rises almost 550 metres above the surrounding plain.

Kings Canyon, Northern Territory

Kings Canyon

An enormous gorge home to an all-natural Amphitheatre, ‘Lost City’, Garden of Eden and year-round waterhole. The undisputed highlight of Watarrka National Park.

West Macdonnell Ranges

West Macdonnell Ranges

Over 600 kilometres of craggy mountain ridges, scrubby grasslands, deep gullies and delightfully croc-free waterholes.

Uluru Aboriginal tours

Australia’s rich First Nations culture offers a unique insight into this wide brown land. Adventure Tours works closely with First Nations communities to develop ethical and authentic experiences that benefit the communities and passengers alike.

Tips for travelling in the Red Centre

  • Don’t be fooled by the outback’s size! While Alice Springs airport is only 13 kilometres from Alice Springs, Alice Springs to Uluru is 463 kilometres. If you’re checking out a trip that flies in or out of Yulara (the closest airport to Uluru), you may be able to arrange flights for the same day the tour starts or finishes. If you’re flying in or out of Alice Springs, you’ll need to arrive the day before, and book outbound flights for the day after the trip finishes.  Contact us  for help with accommodation in Alice Springs before and/or after your trip.
  • The Red Centre isn’t blisteringly hot all year. From June to August the weather actually gets cold at night, sometimes dipping below 0 degrees celcius. Pack a warm jumper or jacket.

Uluru tour reviews

Trip rating, time of year, esperance & southwest adventure , december 2019.

Thanks Adventure Tours for managing our itinerary during the tour so as to keep us safe and to ensure a good experience even with the worst fire season known in Australia unfolding throughout the nation in the summer of 2020. Some of your tours were cancelled where necessary. I felt we were in good hands throughout.

In circumstances where the cancellation is due to external events outside our reasonable control, refunds will be less than any unrecoverable costs. GLT cannot be held responsible for any incidental expenses that you may have incurred as a result of your booking including but not limited to visas, vaccinations, travel insurance excess, or non-refundable flights.

A “Force Majeure Event” includes but is not limited to: acts of God; war; civil commotion; riot; blockade or embargo; fire; explosion; breakdown; union dispute; earthquake; epidemic, pandemic or other health emergency; flood; windstorm or other extreme weather event; lack or failure of courses of supply; passage of any law, order, proclamation, regulation, ordinance, demand, requisition or requirement or any other act of any government authority, beyond the reasonable control of the parties, whether or not foreseeable, which would make it dangerous or not viable for a trip to commence or continue.

Acceptance of Risk

Australia is home to a wide range of dangerous animals, extreme weather conditions, and varied terrain. Experiencing these dangers while camping, hiking, or passing time outside may increase your personal risk. Safety is our number one priority and our guides are highly trained to ensure passenger safety at all times. Get Lost Travel Pty Ltd cannot accept responsibility for any loss, injury, or accident caused by passengers onboard our tours.

Travel Insurance

We recommend all guests have personal travel insurance which should be taken out at the time of booking prior to tour departure. Your travel insurance must provide cover against personal accident death, 24/7 medical expenses, and emergency repatriation with a recommended minimum coverage of US$ 200,000 for each of the categories of cover.

We also strongly recommend it covers cancellation curtailment, COVID-19 cover, personal liability, and loss of luggage and personal effects. If you have travel insurance connected to your credit card or bank account please ensure you have details of the participating insurer, the insurance policy number, and the emergency contact number with you rather than the bank’s name and credit card details.

Alcohol Policy

Alcohol is not permitted on board our vehicles. We reserve the right to refuse re-entry if passengers are overly intoxicated and pose a threat to other passengers, our driver, or our vehicle. We also reserve the right to advise at any time prior to departure and whilst in operation, that alcohol is no longer permitted. The legal drinking age in Australia is 18 years old, photo ID is required.

Child Policy (Age Requirements)

Our child and infant policy and pricing do vary depending on the trip; this is due to the diversity in our product range. All travellers under the age of 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult or guardian. Due to the nature of our extended tours, a moderate level of fitness is required to complete walks and for safety reasons not suitable for infants or children 5 years and under. Except the Northern Territory where the minimum age is 8 years and over for any multi-day tour.

Important Note: Due to the type of experiences we operate throughout Australia, some may require a medium to high level of fitness and a doctor’s certificate is required for people over 70 years old (30 days before travel).

Prices and surcharges

Our tour prices are subject to variable and seasonal pricing, both of which are standard practice within the travel industry. Depending on the trip, passengers are likely to be charged different prices, so booking at that time is the best option if you like the price. Any reduced pricing or discounts that may become available after you have paid your fare price will not apply. If you wish to cancel your booking to take advantage of a cheaper price, full cancellation conditions apply as set out below in (Cancellation by the Traveller). The most up-to-date pricing is available on our websites. Please note that a surcharge may be applied to a purchase made by credit card.

Luggage Policy

To maximize the comfort of your journey no luggage storage facilities are provided on our (Day Trips): It is recommended you bring a small day pack no bigger than 5-7kg. (Short-Break / Extended Tours): Maximum baggage allowance per person is 15-20kg preferably a soft travelling pack. Excessive amounts of luggage may incur a surcharge fee. Inappropriate luggage presented on the day of departure such as surfboards, bikes, and an excessive amount of luggage may result in refusal to board unless previously arranged. Other: mobility scooters, wheelchairs, pushers, prams, walking frames, and other walking aids cannot be stored safely on our vehicles. Please advise prior to booking if there are any of these aids required.

Pick-up & Drop-offs

GLT may offer complimentary inner-city pick-up and drop-off services to selected accommodation providers. Please note it is the customer’s responsibility to be waiting out the front of your selected pickup location (accommodation provider) at least 10 minutes before departure. Failure to wait out the front of your selected accommodation or nominated meeting point may result in the tour guide being unable to locate you causing failure to load. GLT cannot be held responsible for passengers who fail to load.

Special Requirements

Please notify the tour operator of any food allergies or special dietary requirements, and/or medical conditions at the time of booking or 7 days prior to the tour departure. While we endeavor to cater to most dietary needs, there are limited food options in some regions we visit on extended tours, so forward planning is required to ensure we can accommodate but it is not guaranteed. For those with special dietaries, we recommend you bring snacks along.

Booking Confirmations & Enquiries

All reservations must be confirmed within 48 hours of departure via email to [email protected].

Updated June 2024.

Our commitment

At Autopia Tours, we actively promote the protection of flora and fauna on our Uluru Tours. It is our duty to ensure there is minimal disturbance to this World  Heritage Listed region and the species that call it home. Cultural sensitivity and respect for traditional owners should also be shown at all times.

Part of our responsibility is educating guests on minimal impact practices and the importance of ensuring the safety of wildlife and the environmental sustainability of the destinations we visit.

Learn more about EcoTourism: https://www.ecotourism.org.au/

Traditional Owners

Autopia Tours would like to begin by paying our respects to the traditional owners of this country, with specific acknowledgement to the Wurundjeri people. Please be conscious and respectful of the sensitivities of indigenous culture and the spiritual connection they have with the land at all times.

Wildlife Encounters

The natural behaviours of wildlife are to be respected and not interfered with. When viewing wildlife, people should take care to avoid rapid or sudden movements, which could frighten the animal, and should keep noise to a minimum and refrain from touching, petting or feeding all wildlife including birds. Contact with people can introduce diseases to wildlife and can cause them to become aggressive.

Wildlife should not be handled or fed, unless by certified wildlife handlers. Feeding wildlife can alter their natural foraging behaviour and can lead to disease or illness through contact with people and the introduction of foods that are harmful to their digestive system. Feeding wildlife can also cause them to become aggressive toward people.

Wildlife that appears to be in distress, injured or in danger should be reported immediately to the appropriate authority, such as your Guide/Tour Leader, a National Park Ranger or Visitor Centre Staff.

Protecting our National Parks

People should remain on designated walking tracks, behind safety barriers/fences and follow all directions given by the guide/tour leader. Venturing off these can alter fragile ecosystems and can harm wildlife shelters and native vegetation. There are other dangers to be aware of too, such as cliff edges, unstable rock formations, overhanging tree branches and slippery ground cover. Remaining on tracks ensures safe visitation for guests and the environment.

No flora or fauna should be removed from their natural setting. This includes dead wood, fallen leaves, flowers and so forth, as they form part of the ecosystem of the region and their removal could cause a disturbance.

Waste Management

All buses are fitted with waste bins. No organic waste should be disposed of onto the ground. Although organic, items such as banana peels, apple cores, bread and other food scraps, are not natural/native to the region and can introduce pest species, diseases or harm to wildlife if found and eaten. We recommend all passengers bring a water bottle with you on our Grampians Tour. Purchasing bottled water contributes large amounts of plastic into the landfill. Therefore, we ask guests to bring their own bottle, as there is access to water refill stations available on our vehicles. Please ensure you stay hydrated throughout the tour to reduce the risk of sun exposure and dehydration.

All our guides carry a current Level 2 First Aid certificate. Please report any accident or illness to your tour guide. We recommend anyone with an existing medical condition to carry their medication with them on tour and to notify their tour guide at the beginning of the tour.

If you are a smoker! We ask you to refrain from smoking whilst in the company of other passengers and limit it to designated smoking areas. Smoking is not permitted on any of our vehicles, or in any type of accommodation including permanent campsites. We make frequent ‘comfort stops’ to allow free time for guests but cannot guaranteed smoke breaks. Please ensure you dispose of your cigarette butt responsibly and appropriately.

How fit do I need to be for this tour?

A minimum moderate to advanced level of fitness is required to complete the walks. The l ength of walks will be between 2km to 6km each day, often over steep rocky sections and in direct sunlight and high humidity. An approximate 9-11km walk is included in this tour. Embarking on walks will be at the guide’s discretion to ensure the safety of guests. Therefore a medium/high level of fitness is required and a doctor’s certificate is required for people over 70 years (30 days prior to travel).

How much luggage can I bring on tour?

We ask that guests travelling on short breaks/extended tours bring small soft overnight bags and hand luggage only as we have limited storage onboard our vehicles. Large suitcases and oversized luggage can be left at your hotel whilst you are on tour. This tour is not suitable for anyone who requires the use of a mobility aid, wheelchair, walker, and or stroller.

Do you cater to special dietary requirements?

Yes, please notify us if you have any dietary requirements or medical conditions at the time of booking, or at least a few days prior to departure, that way we can make any necessary arrangements.

What type of food do we eat on tour?

Most of the meals are prepared by our tour guides with basic camping-style food options and on occasions, they will be provided by our accommodation providers onsite. Guests are asked to participate in the preparation of meals, clean-up, and vehicle unpacking/loading as it’s a great way to get to know and connect with your fellow travellers.

Are National Park fees included in the tour cost?

Autopia Tours includes Parks Australia fees within the tour price, this covers our guests for a 2-Day Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Parks. Park Passes are not available for purchase by guests not traveling onboard our tours.

What kind of vehicle do we travel in for this Uluru Camping Tours?

We have a couple of all-terrain 4×4 range eco-tour bus, uniquely designed to handle the harshest of terrains and off-road tracks. The maximum number of passengers we carry on these tours is 15-21 people, with a minimum requirement of 8 people to guarantee the departure. Fleet specs: Isuzu N Series NPS300 Trucks (15, 17, 21-seater). In the unlikely event of a breakdown, alternative vehicles may be used.

Is it safe to camp in Australia’s outback? (Acceptance of Risk)

Australia is home to many dangerous creatures, extreme weather conditions, and varied terrain. Experiencing these dangers while camping, hiking, or passing time outside may increase your personal risk. Safety is our number one priority, and our guides are highly trained to ensure passenger safety at all times. Autopia Tours cannot accept responsibility for any loss, injury, or accident caused by passengers onboard Autopia Tours. In the Northern Territory, children must be at least 6 years old for day trips and 8 years old for overnight tours. Children under the age of 18 must always be accompanied by an adult, legal guardian, or caregiver. Despite all care being taken, the responsibility for children on tour lies entirely with their parents or caregivers. Passengers, including children, must wear shoes, sunscreen, and hats at all times.

Do I require travel insurance for the Central Australian outback?

It is highly recommended that all passengers have personal travel insurance, given we’re exploring remote parts of the Northern Territory with limited access to health professionals in the event of sickness or injury.  Autopia Tours is not authorised to provide information on the type of plan or policy options available. This can be provided by an accredited local travel agent or from your preferred insurance company.

What is the temperature like in the Northern Territory?

The weather in the Northern Territory can fluctuate and be extreme. It is not unheard of for temperatures to reach over 40+ degrees Celsius in the dry season and in the evening the temperature drops dramatically. Please ensure you have checked the average temperatures for the time of year you are traveling and have packed adequate clothing. In the event of rain or inclement weather, your experience will still go ahead, unless contacted by the provider.

What is your Vaccination Policy?

In accordance with current Government regulations, it is no longer a requirement to be double vaccinated, although we do highly recommend it.

Our COVID Statement

For your safety, we have implemented comprehensive hygiene measures and increased regular sanitation. Temperature checks of all staff will be conducted pre-departure, with disposable face masks and hand-sanitizer provided. For more information click  here .

Uluru Sunset Tour $99

From breathtaking scenery to fascinating ancient tales, Uluru is one of the most awe-inspiring sights you can experience anywhere in Australia. Our Uluru Sunset Tour gives you the chance to explore the renowned Red Centre at its most beautiful as we catch the last light before it fades beyond this massive monolithic rock formation.

We start this tour by picking you up from the Ayers Rock Resort and transporting you straight to the sunset viewing area at the Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park, which offers you the best possible view across the vast panoramas. Led by a professional guide, you’ll hear all about the enthralling stories that have been told in these parts for millions of years as the towering rock landmark of Uluru can be seen in the distance. At 348-metres tall, Uluru provides a striking backdrop as we rest to enjoy a glass of sparkling wine and a choice of snacks. As the light starts to disappear, the sky comes alive with purples, oranges and reds that drench Uluru and the desert in vibrant colour.

It might be remote, but the centre of Australia still attracts thousands of visitors each year. Dating back 500 million years, this soaring formation has become one of the most iconic images of Australians for a reason. Despite its obvious beauty, photos often don’t do it justice with its majestic qualities really needing to be experienced in person. Holding vital spiritual and cultural significance to the local Anangu people, your guide will be sure to recount many of the captivating stories that date back to the so-called Dreamtime period.

Once you’ve had plenty of time to photograph this giant marvel and the sky has gone dark for the evening, we’ll climb back aboard our coach and quickly return you to the Ayers Rock Resort. Perhaps the best way to experience this world- famous destination, if you want to take your journey to the next level, consider adding the optional BBQ Dinner to complete this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Arrive at Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park and embark on a hike at Arkaroo Rock, a significant cultural site for the local Adnyamathanha people. See rock paintings featuring ochre and charcoal images that depict the Yura Muda (Dreaming or creation story) of Ikara (Wilpena Pound).

This afternoon, experience a Welcome to Country in the Adnyamathanha people’s language at Wilpena Pound Resort. Feeling connected to Country and nature, arrive at Skytrek Willow Springs Station. This 70,000-acre working sheep station features secluded bush camping and is our base while we explore the Flinders Ranges.

Eat a tasty dinner prepared by your Guide, then kick back and enjoy front-row seats to one of the most spectacular light shows on Earth. The Flinders Ranges is famed as having some of the Southern Hemisphere’s clearest skies. Roll out your swag under a blanket of stars twinkling over the ancient landscape.

The driving distance today is approximately 510 km.

The fossils discovered in the Flinders Ranges are so old that geologists had to revise the geologic timeline of Earth’s history, identifying a new era called the Ediacaran period. After breakfast, we will unearth more of this amazing park as we pull on our hiking boots for a morning hike through tall river red gums and past waterholes, culminating with breathtaking views over the surrounding wilderness.

Regeneration is in our DNA, so today, we will meet with a Park Ranger to learn about conservation efforts within Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. We can also give back by participating in some meaningful conservation work. After lunch, we’ll take a magical scenic drive at Brachina Gorge. Quench your thirst with a well-deserved drink at an iconic country pub before returning to camp to relax and have dinner. Driving time today is approximately 3 hours.

Today we are getting off the beaten path and travelling along a section of one of Australia’s most iconic unsealed roads, the iconic Oodnadatta Track. Drive through eerie and moonlike desert scenery as the landscape uncovers highlights like Lake Eyre (Australia’s largest salt lake) and the Mutonia Sculpture Park. Travel through Anna Creek Station, the world’s largest working cattle station. Covering an area of six million acres, it is equivalent to the size of Belgium! Come late afternoon, arrive in the tiny outback settlement of William Creek. In the middle of nowhere, on the way to somewhere, this quirky town with a population of ten is an icon of the South Australian Outback. After dinner, you might like to enjoy a cold drink in the heritage-listed William Creek Hotel, which opened in 1887. Then curl up in your swag under the stars in the campground. The total driving today is approximately 500km.

After breakfast, journey to the famous underground town of Coober Pedy. The opal capital of Australia features a sun-baked lunar landscape, fascinating history and a unique way of life. Visit the town’s main attraction, Umoona Opal Mine & Museum. Go ‘noodling’ or fossicking and learn about these precious stones during an opal-cutting demonstration. Afterward, visit Josephine’s Gallery & Kangaroo Orphanage. Established in 2008 to take in orphaned kangaroos from the far north of South Australia, it is about the size of Germany! The gallery here is a world-class Aboriginal Art Gallery with an extensive range of Aboriginal artefacts and significant works by many of Australia’s best-known Indigenous artists.

The rest of the day is yours to do whatever you please, and there is plenty to explore. Stay in a unique underground bunkhouse tonight and grab dinner at one of the many underground eateries. Today, the driving distance is approximately 170km.

Today we have some distance to cover. Travel north, past the Dingo Fence and the Aboriginal Heritage site, The Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, where you will be mesmerised by the scenery of the Moon Plains. Then, crossing into the Northern Territory, travel onwards to Watarrka National Park, the site of Kings Canyon. Come late afternoon, arrive at our campsite at the Kings Creek Station. Relax, soak up the serenity, and, on warmer days, enjoy a swim in the pool. Have your camera ready for a stunning desert sunset from the sunset viewing platform before dinner at the Station restaurant eatery and settling in for the night. It’s an early start this morning for the spellbinding Kings Canyon Rim Walk, which is guaranteed to be one of the most magical experiences of your life. With its 300-metre-high sandstone walls, hidden waterholes, fern forests, chasms, canyons and caverns, Watarrka National Park is central Australia’s answer to an oasis. Take in the 360-degree views and journey through Priscilla’s Crack, made famous by the classic Australian movie Priscilla Queen of the Desert. From there, see the sandstone domes known as the Lost City and the lush greenery and watering hole of the aptly named Garden of Eden. After lunch, rest your legs on the drive to our final destination, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Late this afternoon, watch an unforgettable sunset over Uluru before retreating to camp for dinner. Then, roll out your swag upon the red Earth and under billions of stars after dinner at camp. Driving today is approximately 350km.

Rising early, breathe deep and soak up the serenity of a sunrise over Uluru. As the sunlight plays with the landscape, the rock formations change colour before your eyes. Next, it’s time to get close to this natural wonder. At 348 metres high and some 550 million years old, feel a powerful presence the moment you set eyes on it. A guided 10km Uluru base walk is your best opportunity to connect with Uluru and learn its stories. Relax beside tranquil waterholes, take a break under a magnificent Sheoak tree and peer into hidden caves. Afterwards, stop for lunch and visit the Cultural Centre to deepen your understanding of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. You can learn about Anangu culture and the park’s natural environment through exhibits and free presentations with Anangu and park rangers. This afternoon experience a fun and inspiring dot painting workshop with a talented local Anangu artist and interpreter. During this wonderful 1.5-hour authentic experience, you will learn about ancient symbols used in Anangu art and teachings and will be taught some introductory Pitjantjatjara words (the local language spoken by Anangu). Use this knowledge to create your own artwork to take home and treasure forever. This afternoon, return to camp for some free time. Relax by the pool or enjoy some of the activities at Ayers Rock Resort, such as a didgeridoo performance, a guided garden walk or discovering artifacts at the museum. Enjoy a tasty dinner at camp tonight. Today we only drive around 60km. You may walk up to 10km today if you do the full Uluru base- walk. However, shorter Uluru walks are available.

On the final day of the tour, an early start is rewarded with a spellbinding Kata Tjuta sunrise. Translating to the Pitjantjatjara word for ‘Many Heads’, the 36 domes of Kata Tjuta are a defining feature of the Red Centre landscape both topographically and spiritually. Rising 546 metres above the surrounding plain, its tip is the highest point for miles, while the site’s ridges and ravines are closely connected with numerous Indigenous creation-time stories. Many of these stories are kept secret from outsiders, but you’ll learn a little about the local Anangu culture and appreciate the beauty of their land on a rewarding hike.

Your outback adventure ends in the late morning on our return to Yulara. For those departing from Uluru Airport, complimentary transfers are available from the resort. Map of the route for Iconic Australia: Famous Cities & Red Centre Explorer

Places visited

Day 1 sydney.

Arrive at any time. Join your CEO for a welcome meeting.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 2 sydney/manly beach.

Sunny Sydney welcomes you and hit the road right away with your CEO to dive into exploring this stunning city. Set off on a walking orientation tour of some of the city's well known landmarks. Slowly make your way to Circular Quay, where you'll hop onto a ferry to cross the harbor to Manly beach. Your CEO will point out some must do's while you're in Manly, like the coastal walk to Shelly beach, and some places to grab some local food. You can't go wrong with some fish and chips by the sea.

Day 3 Sydney

Today is your's to spend as you see fit. There is quite literally too much choice in Sydney, so use your time wisely. Choose from exploring on foot the Rock's neighborhood, which is also home to the city's Museum of Modern Art. The cafe on the roof is a great spot for lunch or a famous Aussie coffee. Or get the blood pumping by booking a jet boating tour or climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Join your CEO and fellow travelers in the evening for a meal together at a local restaurant.

Meals included:

Day 4 sydney/yulara.

Board a flight bound for Yulara, the gateway to Uluru and the Red Centre. Spend the afternoon getting straight out there and exploring-starting first with Kata Tjuta National Park and the Walpa Gorge walk. Catch the sunset over Uluru before making your way to the tented camp. Enjoy an outdoor meal cooked at camp with lots of local ingredients.

Day 5 Yulara/Kings Canyon

Sunrise over Uluru is not to be missed, so rise early and catch sunrise over Australia's most iconic indigenous landmarks. This morning, take the time to explore Uluru on foot on a guided walk through some of the most culturally significant areas of the site. These sacred spaces are some of the oldest on the planet, and understanding the interpretation behind them makes them even more impactful. Later, head to the Kings Canyon region overland, to your next tented camp in the bush.

Day 6 Kings Canyon/Alice Springs

The mornings in the desert offer cooler temperatures, and so head out early to hike throughout Kings Canyon. Choose between the harder 3 hour hike and a more approachable one hour option. The Rim walk is a 6km walk along the upper rim of Kings Canyon. The most difficult part of the hike is the very beginning with a 500 step ascent, but the landscapes and views you are rewarded with are more than worth the effort. You won't even remember the effort it took to get up there. (Sort of!) If you prefer to take it easy, enjoy a 2km hike through canyon valley. Later on, rest up on a drive East to Alice Springs.

Day 7 Alice Springs/Melbourne

In addition to its rich indigenous history and cultural, Alice Springs is home to the Telegraph Station that linked Australia top to bottom in the 19th century. This telegraph connection also integrated Australia into the wider network within the British Empire, allowing Australia to be connected to the outside world in a matter of hours, versus days. Take a moment to learn about some of the troubling history that took place not too far in the distant past when the station ceased to operate as a telegraph station and became a boarding house for indigenous children.

Day 8 Melbourne

Melbourne is one of the easiest cities to traverse on foot and by public transport-so you will be getting your steps in today. Start the morning off with a guided laneways tour where you will be led through some of the famous-and off the beaten track-spots in Melbourne's famous laneways. Then join your CEO at the Queen Victoria markets where you can choose to grab some lunch from one of the many stalls. End the afternoon at the Royal Botanic Gardens of Melbourne, a sprawling 38 hectares of green space housing over 800 species of plants from the world over.

Day 9 Melbourne

Another Australian city with tons to do, so a day at leisure gives you plenty of time to craft the perfect day. You may want to take a trip out to see the Phillip Island Penguin Parade or embark on a full day tour out along the Great Ocean Road.

Day 10 Melbourne

Depart at any time.

Aussie ‘paradise’ now just 2.5 hours away from major city

Travelling to this Aussie paradise just got a whole lot easier for millions of people in one major city.

Chantelle Francis

Striking reality of city inches from hell

Truth no one wants to admit about Australia

Mum sells car for $7k, turns it into $4.5m

K’gari is hardly a “hidden” gem as the largest sand island in the world.

The stunning destination, formerly named Fraser Island, sits just off the east coast and welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors a year.

And it just become a lot easier to get to for those down south, with Jetstar launching the first direct flights from Melbourne to Hervey Bay in June.

With popular tourist spots such as Lake McKenzie, Pile Valley rainforest, the coloured sand cliffs known as The Pinnacles, the Maheno shipwreck, Eli Creek, and Champagne Pools – K’gari certainly lives up to its name (pronounced “gurrie”), meaning paradise.

But the untouched remote west coast where few people go is what truly had me asking: ‘is this real?’.

Picture turquoise water and long stretches of white sand with no human foot prints until you make your mark.

Airline cuts fly time to Aussie beauty in half

It is a challenging area to get to. By 4WD you have to time the journey just right or you risk being submerged in water. If you prefer a stress-free visit, you can take a boat tour from the mainland for the day.

I did the “remote K’gari experience” with Tasman Venture, a family business started in 1990. You know you are being looked after by locals when the owner is also the lead skipper.

The crew takes guests to the best spots based on the sea and tide conditions of the day.

After anchoring the catamaran, tourists hop on “Sealegs” to get ashore; an impressive design with retractable wheels means the boat can drive up on to the sand and guests can avoid getting wet.

The untouched remote west coast of K’gari. Picture: Chantelle Francis

My group got to take kayaks up the freshwater of Awinya Creek to see an area of the island not accessible on foot or by boat, and then climb up a massive sand dune near Bowarrady Creek for 360 degree views of K’gari and Platypus Bay.

Only the day before, guests on this tour got to swim with a whale.

Getting the kayaks ready to head inland up Awinya Creek. Picture: Chantelle Francis

Jetstar’s new direct flights from Melbourne to Hervey Bay cuts the previous travel time flying via Sydney by more than half.

From experience, I can tell you what a game changer it is catching one 2.5 hour flight rather than two flights with a layover, spending over eight hours in airports and on planes.

If you are one of many travellers keen to head towards the sunny region, known as the whale watching capital of the world, continue reading.

K’gari isn’t just for campers with 4WDs

While K’gari is famous for tourists who self-drive (4WD vehicle only) and camp, there are other options to travel the World Heritage-listed island.

You can jump on the Kingfisher Bay Ferry from River Heads without a car, or for those wanting a more VIP experience, you can travel by helicopter straight from Hervey Bay Airport with Great Ocean Helicopters.

Nathan and Aimee moved their business up from Victoria’s Great Ocean Road during the pandemic after realising there was no one doing scenic helicopter flights in the area – and they are still the only ones.

The island certainly looks spectacular from above.

A dingo sleeps on 75 Mile Beach, the sand highway on K’gari’s east coast. Picture: Chantelle Francis

Once you are on the island, you can join a tour to get around to the popular sights – such as K’gari Explorer Tours’ “beauty spots tour” on an airconditioned 4WD bus.

Travelling on a 4WD bus is an experience in itself, but the big perk you don’t get when self-driving is a lively tour guide full of knowledge about the top natural attractions (and advice on what to do if you run into a dingo). It is nice to have some context to why these spots you see all over Instagram are truly special.

If you have always wanted to visit K’gari but do not want to camp, or are an international tourist scared of the wildlife (in true Aussie fashion, there are 19 different species of snakes on the island), visitors can stay in four-star accommodation at Kingfisher Bay Resort. Even Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stayed here in 2018 , albeit in a private house.

There is a dingo fence encircling the 5km perimeter of the resort.

A new light show is due to launch here on September 30 by Bruce Ramus, the same artist behind Wintjiri Wiru , a drone, light and sound show at Uluru.

It has been 18 months in the making and is expected to be a tourism drawcard.

The mainland is hiding some gems itself

When it comes to the Fraser Coast, K’gari is known to overshadow the mainland, but Hervey Bay should not be overlooked – especially if you are travelling through there.

There are some incredible sunset yacht charters in the bay. For me, a highlight of my time in the region was an afternoon with Fraser Island Boat Charters (you can set sail on your own without a boat licence too!). Every time I looked up from our picnic, the sky had changed colours, with the finale being a million bats flying above.

It is a spectacular sight, but not a rare one. Every night, the bats fly from Hervey Bay to K’gari to feast, and return back to the mainland in the morning.

A yacht charter off Harvey Bay was a highlight. Picture: Chantelle Francis

Speaking of feasting, Banksia Seafood and Grill (cute coastal vibes) and the Odyssey Bistro (a unique dining experience) on the Esplanade are worth a look.

At Odyssey, you can leave your order up to the chef. If you so choose, you are greeted with an envelope containing the surprise menu when you sit down to eat.

The restaurant’s menu changes every month and on the last Sunday of each month, all the staff try it out before it is introduced to guests.

But it is perhaps the back of the menu which is the most interesting – a map showing where all the produce is sourced from locally. It is clearly of high importance to chef and co-owner Jason England. For example, on my visit, I did not know what reef fish I would be eating until it was cooked, because there were small amounts of different freshly caught fish being used for the night.

While you are in Hervey Bay, you must also know the incredible Lady Elliot Island on the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef is only a 40 minutes flight away.
