Arctic Monkeys New Zealand Show Announced

Arctic Monkeys New Zealand Show Announced

British indie rock titans Arctic Monkeys are returning to Aotearoa for a special headline show at Auckland's Spark Arena in March 2019. Alex Turner 's hit-making team are touring in celebration of their long-awaited, Mercury Prize nominated sixth studio album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino , which dropped in May following five years downtime between releases since 2013's AM Tour . The Brit Award-winning Sheffield four-piece's suave new collection has been rapturously received, hitting the number one album charts spots both in New Zealand and in the UK, where it was the band's sixth consecutive number one debut and the country's fastest selling vinyl release in 25 years. Last here in 2014 , Arctic Monkeys will be supported by friends and collaborators, LA trio Mini Mansions (featuring Queens of the Stone Age bassist Michael Shuman) for their all-ages Auckland event. Round-the-clock UTR reporter Fluffy caught up with drummer and vocalist Matt Helders about the band's stylistic evolution and their forthcoming return...

"It's hard to put a finger on exactly what it was, I think growing up a bit. There's quite a big space between those records, the way it was written is different to what we've done before, the creative process was slightly different. It made sense to us, it was always try to do something different every time.

We've managed to slot [the new album] into the set in a good way. We've got obviously six albums, when we do a setlist they're fitting in quite nicely and a lot of it is how the show looks and how we play the songs and which ones we choose. It seems to be working really well. It's a big mix because we've got that much to choose from... we're trying to bring everything. No special effects [or] pyrotechnics. It makes sense when you see it." Undertheradar proudly presents...

Press release:

British rock royalty Arctic Monkeys have ushered in a spectacular new era with their sixth studio album, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, and now Frontier Touring is over the moon to announce the band’s return to Australia and New Zealand for a mammoth run of arena shows in February and March 2019.

Alex Turner and co. will kick things off in the west with a show in Perth, before crossing over to Melbourne and heading up the east coast with shows in Sydney and Brisbane with the final leg across the Tasman in Auckland. Joining them at all shows will be friends and collaborators Mini Mansions, the LA trio featuring members of Queens of the Stone Age, and The Last Shadow Puppets.

The news comes fresh after the Arctic Monkeys announced a new two-track digital bundle, featuring a previously unreleased b-side ‘Anyways’, out 30 November (through Domino/EMI Music Australia). The band have also shared Warp Speed Chic, a short film directed by Ben Chappell and originally shown as part of the band’s AM:ZM exhibitions in London and Sheffield alongside the photography of Zackery Michael.

On Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (Domino/EMI Music Australia), Arctic Monkeys left behind the thick guitar riffs that defined their previous record AM, opting instead for more piano-driven, suave, lounge pop atmosphere set in a hotel on the moon. Their most surprising release to date slows down the swagger, and was written largely by Alex Turner on piano in self-imposed isolation. Fed by obscure soundtracks, cult films, European songwriters, and vintage sci-fi, the album was recorded across LA, Paris, and London with long-time producer James Ford. Think velvet jackets and brocade slippers, smoky organs, cinematic art deco visuals, and Alex Turner’s trademark lyricism exploring consumerism, politics, religion and technology.

The Sheffield band have now released six studio albums. Their debut, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was the fastest-selling debut album in UK chart history, winning the Mercury Prize for best album. Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino became their sixth consecutive #1 debut in the UK, the country’s fastest-selling vinyl in 25 years, and their fourth record nominated for the Mercury Prize. They’ve won seven Brit Awards and been nominated for three Grammys, have headlined festivals all over the world, and are truly second to none.

Appearing as special guests at all shows will be Mini Mansions. Founded by Zach Dawes (The Last Shadow Puppets), Tyler Parkford, and Michael Shuman (Queens of the Stone Age) during a break from Queens of the Stone Age touring in 2009, they’ve put out two albums and three EPs, including the newly released Works Every Time. They’ve toured with Tame Impala, Arctic Monkeys and Royal Blood, as well as performing at festivals like Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds and Bonnaroo, and will be sure to add to the cinematic atmosphere of each and every show.

Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is a perfect example of Arctic Monkeys’ special brand of creativity and desire to keep the world guessing. Their live show has evolved once again to make room for the exciting new material, making these shows unmissable events. Grab your tickets now before they all disappear.

Tour news: The Arctic Monkeys

They've progressed from the St James Theatre to Big Day Out's main stage - and now The Arctic Monkeys are preparing for their biggest New Zealand headlining shows yet.

The Sheffield band are set to perform two stadium shows here next year - at Auckland's Vector Arena on Friday, May 2, and Wellington's TSB Bank Arena on Saturday, May 3.

The announcement proves the Monkeys have steadily climbed their way through rock's ranks, from a 2006 show at Auckland's now-in limbo St James, to a main stage slot at the 2009 Big Day Out - which included a sweaty and heaving sold out sideshow at The Powerstation the night before.

In May the Monkeys will be bringing with them five albums of wry British rock, from the jumped-up story-telling jubilance of their 2006 debut Whatever People Say I Am , That's What I'm Not and their hit single I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor , to the Josh Homme-inspired swagger and guitar-driven maturity of this year's widely-acclaimed newbie, the Mercury Music Prize-nominated AM .

"When we came to make the record we just knew what we wanted to do a bit more and how to achieve it. Whereas in the early days, we didn't have a clue what to do. And we're over the moon with how AM turned out," guitarist Jamie Cook told TimeOut back in August.

"There's some great songs, we're really excited, and we just can't wait to get it out and start playing them."

The Monkeys will also be bringing some serious stadium swagger with them. They've now headlined the Glastonbury music festival twice, and this year have headlined several big-name European festival dates, including the Heineken Open'er Festival in Poland and Rock in Roma in Italy.

Tickets for their May shows go on sale on December 11 at 9am through Ticketmaster (Auckland) and Ticketek (Wellington). A 24-hour presale for Frontier Touring members begins on December 3 at 2pm.
