Brahma Temple – One and Only Temple of Lord Brahma
In India there are numerous temples dedicated to various gods and goddesses but Pushkar is the only place where you will witness the magnificent temple of Lord Brahma , the creator of the universe.
Every year thousands of pilgrims from all across the world come to Pushkar to get the divine grace of Lord Brahma. The history behind the Brahma Temple of Pushkar is very interesting. It dates back to the 14th century. It is said that Lord Brahma’s wife Savitri cursed him because in a great sacrifice organized by Brahma she was not available for a while due to which Lord Brahma married another beautiful woman named Gayatri. He got a consort needed at that time for the yagna. When Savitri got to know about it she cursed Lord Brahma that only in Pushkar he would be worshipped.
Built of marble and stone, it has a one-of-a-kind architecture style alongside the superb red pinnacle. Inside the temple, pictures of Brahma enrich the sanctum sanctorum. It is indeed one of the must visit places in Pushkar.
Legend : As per the legends it is said that Lord Brahma lied to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva that he already found the head of the pillar of light which in real is actually impossible to do as the pillar’s length is infinite but Lord brahma lied and brought a flower as a fake proof of reaching the top of the pillar. Lord Shiva caught Lord Brahma’s lie and cursed him that he will never have a temple dedicated to him for worship. This is the reason why Lord Brahma doesn’t have any temple in India.

8 Places to Visit in Pushkar in 1 Day (+ 4 if You Have More Time)
Are you looking for the best places to visit in Pushkar in 1 day? Then you have come to the right place as that’s exactly what this post is all about.
Pushkar is a tranquil town in the state of Rajasthan , about 15 km (9.3 mi) from Ajmer. This is one of the best cultural destinations in India , famous for its interesting history and the holy Pushkar Lake. Pushkar is also home to one of the rarest Brahma temples in the country, which is why thousands (or maybe even millions) of Hindu devotees flock to this town every year.
But there’s more to Pushkar than temples, holy lakes and history alone. This town is set in between hills, which makes for some nice hiking opportunities.
But without further ado, here are the best places to visit in Pushkar in 1 day. Depending on your personal pace, you may have time to visit other places too. That’s why I’ve included four extra places at the end of this post.

Best Places to Visit in Pushkar in 1 Day
Let’s start with the 8 best places to visit in Pushkar in a day first! These are all within walking distance of one another, which makes it pretty easy to get around.
1. Pushkar Lake
The holy Pushkar Lake (or Pushkar Sarovar) is located right in the centre of the town and it’s sacred to Hindus. Similarly to the Ganges River in Varanasi , it’s believed that bathing in this lake will wash your sins away and cure skin diseases.
According to the legend, Pushkar Lake was formed when Lord Brahma vanquished the demon Vajranash with a lotus flower. The flower then fell to the ground and created the Lake.
This is a very peaceful place and one of the best things to do in Pushkar is to relax at Sunset Point, which is located East of Pushkar Lake. As its name suggests, Sunset Point is a great spot to catch the sunset. Musicians play their instruments every evening here and you might find people dancing to the beat as well.
You will find 52 bathing ghats surrounding Pushkar Lake and I would recommend visiting them all – that’s right, every single one of them! Don’t worry, though, this doesn’t take as long as you may think.
Strolling along the ghats was one of my favourite things to do in Pushkar. You will find people performing rituals and offering flowers to the lake here. Many pilgrims also bathe in the lake, and I saw some of them hurrying out screaming “snake” while I was there too. No one got hurt, though!
👞 Note that you will have to take off your shoes when you enter the ghat area and the same goes for when you cross the bridge. Do make sure not to step in cow shit, though, it’s everywhere!
3. Brahma Temple
This temple is one of the few temples that’s dedicated to Brahma , the Hindu god of creation, which makes it a very important place for devotees of Hinduism.
Brahma is one of the three main gods in Hinduism, together with Shiva and Vishnu. However, while numerous temples are dedicated to the two other gods, very few are dedicated to Brahma. Although no one really seems to know why this is, there are some theories explaining this .
It’s believed that Pushkar’s Brahma Temple dates back to the 14th century and that there have been previous structures on the site for 2000 years.
I have to admit that my visit to this temple was a little chaotic. I had to leave my camera and shoes inside a locker before entering, which is why I don’t have any pictures of the Brahma temple. Once inside, it was super crowded with little space to move around, so I didn’t stay there very long.
Nevertheless, the Brahma Temple is a unique place, to say the least, and it would be a pity to miss it during a visit to Pushkar.

4. Savitri Mata Temple (hike or ropeway)
The Savitri Mata Temple is perched on top of a hill and, believe me, the view from there is incredible! You can see the town of Pushkar and the beautiful landscapes that surround the town from this temple.
The temple that originally stood here was built in 1687 but the one that you can see today was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It’s dedicated to the Goddess Savitri, who is the wife of Lord Brahma.
There are two ways to get to the Savitri Mata Temple, you can either hike or take the ropeway, which is a 15-minute walk from Pushkar Lake. If you decide to hike, it’s an additional 15 to 20-minute hike up 970 steps to reach the top.
Watch out for the monkeys when you’re there, they might look innocent but they’re actually quite aggressive!
I went to the Savitri Mata Temple for sunset and I can definitely recommend doing the same, it’s incredible! This is one of the best places to visit in Pushkar if you have only 1 day.
5. Gurudwara Sahib
This beautiful Sikh temple was built in the early 19th century. It’s believed that the grounds on which Gurudwara Sahib was built were visited by two of the most important Sikh gurus – Guru Gobind Singh and Guru Nanak Dev – a few centuries ago.
Today, the Gurudwara Sahib is an important pilgrimage site for Sikhs.
The temple’s architecture is unique in Pushkar and it’s a place I really enjoyed visiting. It’s a short, 5-minute walk from the East side of the lake.
🧕 Note that apart from taking off your shoes and dressing modestly, both men and women will have to cover their heads when visiting this temple. Head coverings are available at the entrance but you can also use your own scarf if you want to.
6. Old Rangji Temple
The Old Rangji Temple is another one of Pushkar’s most famous temples. This temple was built in 1844 and it’s dedicated to Lord Rangji, the resting form of Lord Vishnu.
Although non-Hindus are not allowed inside the building, the exterior of the temple is still worth checking out. Its architecture is a mix of Rajasthan and South Indian styles, which makes it quite unique.
When I was there, the guards let me visit a small museum on the right side of the entrance (for free).
7. Pushkar Bazar
Although normally, I’m not much of a shopper, it’s a little different when I’m in India. This country just has so many beautiful things, Rajasthan especially. I ended up buying some clothes and bangles when I was in Pushkar.
The Pushkar Bazar is a great place to go shop. You will find plenty of handicrafts, clothes, jewellery, accessories and more for a reasonable price here (do haggle, though). You may just find the perfect souvenir from India at this place.
8. Evening Aarti
The Aarti is a Hindu ritual that’s performed at the ghats of Pushkar every evening (just like in Varanasi). It starts at 7 pm during the Summer and at 5 pm in Winter and one of the best places to attend it is at Varah Ghat.
Around this time, the ceremony will be performed while the sound of temple bells and holy chants fills the air. Attending the evening Aarti an unforgettable experience that you cannot miss during a visit to Pushkar.
Other Places to Visit in Pushkar if You Have More Time
If you have some time left, there are some other interesting places worth checking out in Pushkar. You will find them below.
Other temples
It’s believed that the small town of Pushkar has over 500 temples, 80 of these being large ones! So, if you have more time here, you could visit some of Pushkar’s most famous temples (besides the ones you’ve seen already, of course).
If there’s one temple that I would recommend visiting, then it’s the Gayatri Temple , which is perched on top of a hill. It’s an easy walk up a path to get to this small temple and the view is wonderful!
Surrounding villages
Another nice thing to do in Pushkar is to rent a scooter and visit some of the surrounding villages. I did this after visiting Aloo Baba (you can read more about him later in this post) and it was amazing!
Some of the villages I stopped in were Bhanvata and Picauliya and the villagers were definitely not used to seeing foreigners there. When I stopped to take the picture above of the man with his camel, the entire street came outside of their houses to look at what I was doing and wave.
Visiting Aloo Baba is quite a unique experience, to say the least! The temple where this elderly man lives is located on the outskirts of Pushkar, a 20-minute ride from Pushkar Lake.
Aloo (which means “potato” in Hindi ) Baba has only been eating potatoes for the last 45 to 50 years , and apart from that, he loves smoking hash and drinking tea too. You can read more about this man in this interesting article about Aloo Baba’s life .
I was a little nervous to meet this not-so-everyday man at first but he turned out to be very sweet and the permanent smile on his face made me feel very welcome (even though it was due to the hash).
Pushkar Camel Fair
The 9-day Pushkar Camel Fair , also known as Kartik Mela, is one of the largest camel, horse and cattle fairs in India.
During the first 8 days of the fair, you will find numerous competitions and cultural performances. Farmers from all over Rajasthan come to Pushkar for this event!
The last day, however, is a little bit different. On this day, people will participate in religious activities like bathing in the Pushkar Lake and offering prayers at the Brahma Temple.
📅 The Camel Fair is held for every year at the start of the month of Kartik in the Hindu calendar. This is around October and November , but as the exact dates are different every year, it’s good to check when it’s held in advance if you want to go here.
Best Time to Visit Pushkar
The best time to visit Pushkar is between October and March . At this time of the year, the weather will be the most pleasant (read: not too hot).
The summer months, from April to June are the hottest months of the year and, although hotels will be cheaper then, visiting the city at this time of the year won’t be so pleasant because of the torrid heat.
I visited Pushkar during the monsoon, which is between June and September. It rained from time to time when I was there, but never for an entire day and overall, the weather was pleasant (although it was still quite hot).
How to Get to Pushkar
There are several ways to get to Pushkar, you can find them below:
- Direct bus: Depending on where you’re coming from, there might be a direct bus that goes to Pushkar. You will have to book it in advance, though. This can be done in booking agencies or online (though 12GoAsia is the only website I could find that accepts non-Indian credit cards and it only sells train tickets to Pushkar).
- Train to Ajmer and bus to Pushkar: Another way to get there is by taking the train to Ajmer, which is 15 km (9.3 mi) from Pushkar. Once you arrive in Ajmer, you will have to take the local bus, (it takes about 30 minutes). I was coming from Jaipur when I went to Pushkar and this is what I did.
- Train to Ajmer and taxi to Pushkar: If you don’t want to hop on the local bus, you can take a taxi from the railway station of Ajmer to Pushkar.
- Private car: This is the easiest but most expensive option to get to Pushkar. It’s possible to hire a private car that will take you there.
🚂 Don’t forget to book your tickets in advance if you’re taking the train. This is necessary in the North of India because trains tend to fill up pretty quickly. As I mentioned above, the only website I could find that accepts foreign credit cards is 12GoAsia and it works very well!
How to Get Around Pushkar
Pushkar is a very walkable city and most of the places mentioned in this list are within walking distance of one another. However, if you don’t feel like walking or if you would like to visit Aloo Baba or explore the surrounding villages, the best ways to get around Pushkar are the following:
- Auto-rickshaw: You will find these roaming around the streets of Pushkar. Even though you could stop one in the streets, I would recommend using the Ola app . This app works just like Uber and, this way, you will get a fair price immediately and you won’t need to haggle. Unfortunately, auto-rickshaw drivers are notorious for charging 10 times the local price to tourists.
- Rent a scooter: If you’d like to explore the surroundings, renting a scooter is a perfect way to do so. You will find places where you can rent one in town or you can ask your hotel.
- Private car: This one is more expensive, but you could also hire a private car to take you around.
Where to Stay in Pushkar
There are many hotels and guesthouses in Pushkar, it all depends on your personal taste and budget. You will find my top recommendations below:
- Kanhaia Haveli (⭐ 8.6/10, $): This affordable hotel offers nice rooms and has a rooftop restaurant. What makes it even better is that it’s just a short walk from Pushkar Lake.
- Kothi Pushkar ( ⭐ 9.2/10, $$): Kothi is a charming hotel with an onsite restaurant and it’s within walking distance of the lake. This is an excellent choice for those on a mid-range budget.
- Hotel White Rabbit ( ⭐ 9.6/10, $$$): This beautiful hotel has an outdoor swimming pool and an on-site restaurant. The rooms are elegant and the place is clean and neat.

Top Tips for Visiting Pushkar
Here are my best tips to visit Pushkar after spending 2 weeks in this small (but super interesting) city.
- The sunset point by the lake and the Savitri Mata Temple are the best places to watch the sunset in Pushkar .
- Be wary of scams . One of the most famous scams in Pushkar is the one where someone hands you flowers to offer to the lake. If you accept them, they will ask for a ridiculous amount of money to bless your family – and no, returning the flowers is “absolutely impossible”.
- When visiting Pushkar, it’s important to dress modestly and to take off your shoes when you enter a temple, the ghat area or if you cross the bridge. This is a very religious place, so make sure to cover your shoulders and knees (this goes for both men and women).
- Note that there is no alcohol in Pushkar . However, some restaurants serve beer under the counter.
Best Places to Visit in Pushkar in 1 Day: Final Thoughts
Pushkar is a tranquil town that I really loved and I ended up spending more time here than I initially intended (that was the case with many places in Rajasthan).
This town is the perfect place to head to if you’re looking for a cultural experience or if you want to get out of the chaos of the bigger Indian cities. One of the many things I loved about Pushkar is that you can find some greenery not too far from the centre of town.
I hope this post will help you plan your stay in Pushkar!
