Travel insurance for Morocco is a must-have when visiting this fascinating country. Although we don’t want to think about mishaps while we’re abroad, the reality is that these things happen. Being covered by a comprehensive insurance policy ensures you can travel with peace of mind.

Buying travel health insurance for Morocco isn’t mandatory, but it’s highly recommended. I never go anywhere without a policy from one of the best travel insurance companies . I strongly suggest getting coverage, especially since this country may have health and sanitation standards that vary significantly from what you’re used to. It’s not uncommon for tourists to suffer from stomach bugs and viruses here, but Morocco holiday insurance can support you in such cases.

We’ve been using Heymondo insurance since we travel full-time, particularly their annual multi-trip travel insurance . This company offers an excellent coverage-to-price ratio and even includes electronics in its baggage loss benefit, a feature that’s hard to find with other providers. We’ve had to depend on Heymondo a few times in emergencies, and the support team has always gone above and beyond. If you choose this company, use our Heymondo discount code to save on your policy.

Tips for finding the best travel insurance for Morocco

Again, Morocco travel health insurance is not a requirement to enter the country . Even so, that doesn’t mean that it’s not extremely valuable. It’s always wise to take out a policy before your trip since you never know what could happen while you’re abroad.

From diseases and illnesses to accidents and injuries, and even theft and robberies, the best holiday insurance for Morocco can come in handy. You should also consider that this country may not have the same medical benefits that you’re used to at home, which makes travel insurance even more crucial.

The Blue City, travel insurance for Morocco

Travel medical insurance for Morocco will cover the costs incurred from health emergencies, repatriation to your home country, trip interruption or cancellation, and lost, stolen, or damaged luggage. If you think about any of these scenarios, they’re quite costly, so you’ll be stuck paying hundreds or thousands of dollars if you don’t have insurance.

You deserve to enjoy your vacation, so I highly recommend buying a policy from one of the companies below. Also, be sure to wash any fruits or vegetables you buy in Morocco and drink bottled water (be careful with drinks that have ice). Be cautious and use common sense, as the risks of terrorism or theft in Morocco are very real. I don’t say this to scare you; I just want to drive home the message that travel insurance is worth every penny !

Before I give you the details on the best travel insurance for Morocco , I want to share this comparison table. The chart below shows, at a glance, the most critical aspects of each company, such as price, medical coverage, trip cancellation, and more.

To be as fair as possible, I simulated the same quote for each insurer: a 2-week trip to Morocco from the United States, with a trip cost of $5,000:

*Price used for example

As you can see, Heymondo stands out for its competitive price and coverage amounts, especially regarding trip interruption, cancellation, and baggage loss. It’s also the only Morocco travel insurance that pays your medical expenses upfront , so you don’t have to pay out of pocket and then file a reimbursement claim.

Heymondo is one of the best travel insurance companies overall, but it’s not the only one. If you’re concerned about price, I recommend SafetyWing . It’s one of the cheapest travel insurance options, so you can still enjoy coverage on a budget. I’ll share more about these companies and the others below .

If you’re looking for the best holiday insurance for Morocco , these are the top choices, in a nutshell:

  • Heymondo , the best travel insurance for Morocco
  • SafetyWing , a cheap Morocco travel insurance
  • IMG Global , a good Morocco travel insurance for seniors
  • Trawick International , an excellent Morocco holiday insurance for students
  • Travelex , a basic travel insurance for Morocco
  • AIG Travel Guard , another Moroccan travel insurance

Keep reading to learn more about these providers, including coverage amounts, trip-related benefits, and more .

1. Heymondo , the best travel insurance for Morocco

Hands down, Heymondo is the best travel insurance for Morocco for several great reasons. First, it offers some of the highest coverage limits for emergency medical expenses and repatriation. Second, it has excellent baggage loss benefits , something you’ll surely want in Morocco. Heymondo provides the highest amount of coverage for lost and damaged bags, and they even include electronics in this benefit. Most other companies require you to purchase electronics coverage as an add-on.

heymondo travel insurance for morocco

Another thing that makes Heymondo a top-rated holiday insurance for Morocco is that it pays your medical expenses upfront . If you get sick or hurt during your trip, contact Heymondo, and they’ll point you to the nearest hospital or clinic . The company will have taken care of your medical bills by the time you get treated. No need to shell out tons of money, file a claim, and wait for reimbursement.

In addition, Heymondo offers $10,000 in trip cancellation and interruption and a 24/7 travel app , so you can always get in touch with a doctor to resolve medical questions quickly. The customer support team is always available via the free telephone line.

We’ve used Heymondo for years and have been delighted with the experience. First, we had their long-stay travel insurance , and now that we’re traveling full-time, we use their annual multi-trip insurance . I’ve had to rely on this insurance several times for medical emergencies and accidents, and they’ve always been prompt, professional, and polite. You can read more about my insights in my Heymondo review .

Finally, this insurance already comes at a great price, but you can save even more using our 5% Heymondo discount .

2. SafetyWing , a cheap Morocco travel insurance

If cost is your main concern, I recommend a policy from SafetyWing . Their Nomad Insurance is one of the cheapest Morocco travel insurance options, so you can enjoy great coverage on a budget.

SafetyWing is one of the top medical insurances for travelers , offering $250,000 in emergency medical coverage. It also provides $5,000 for trip interruption , but trip cancellation is not covered. SafetyWing’s travel-related benefits aren’t as varied as other insurers, but you get $3,000 in baggage loss protection . Electronics aren’t included, but non-U.S. residents can add this benefit for just a bit extra.

best travel insurance for morocco

There are a few other things to consider before choosing SafetyWing for your Morocco holiday insurance . While it’s one of the cheapest travel insurance companies , it comes with a $250 deductible , so you’ll have to pay $250 out of pocket before they cover your medical costs. Also, its add-ons, like electronics theft and adventure sports coverage, aren’t available to U.S. residents .

On the plus side, SafetyWing offers 24/7 customer support, so you can always get in touch with someone. If you don’t have a trip end date, no problem; plans renew every 4 weeks, and you can cancel anytime. You can even get coverage in your home country for 30 days after being abroad for 90 days.

However, you’ll enjoy greater benefits (and your medical bills paid upfront) with Heymondo .

3. IMG Global , a good Morocco travel insurance for seniors

IMG Global is another travel health insurance for Morocco . This company is known for its variety of plans , making it an excellent choice for students, families, seniors, and more.

I specifically looked at the iTravelInsured plan, which provides $250,000 in emergency medical expenses and $500,000 for repatriation. Its health-related benefits and maximum age limit of 100 make it one of the best travel insurances for seniors . Some plans can even cover pre-existing conditions if you buy the policy within 20 days of your initial trip payment.

how much is travel insurance for morocco

As for travel-related benefits, IMG Global covers up to 100% of your trip costs if you need to cancel your adventure (150% for trip interruption). Just be sure to read the terms and conditions carefully so you know which reasons are covered in this benefit.

Double-checking your Morocco travel insurance policy is crucial, especially if you go with IMG Global. This company offers so many plans that it can be hard to keep track of your benefits and exclusions . For example, the iTravelInsured plan I looked at only provided $1,500 for baggage loss protection, and the overall price was about twice as much as Heymondo .

Also, IMG Global requires you to pay your medical bills upfront and file a reimbursement claim, whereas Heymondo immediately takes care of the payments for you.

4. Trawick International , an excellent Morocco holiday insurance for students

Yet another option to consider is Trawick International . This company offers comprehensive international travel insurance to Morocco at a competitive price and with excellent coverage limits.

For example, the Safe Travels Voyager plan includes $250,000 in medical expense coverage and $1,000,000 for evacuation and repatriation . This is just one of a handful of insurance plans with Trawick, so you’ll have to find the best policy that suits your needs.

how to find the best travel insurance for morocco

If you’re a senior traveler, you’re eligible for specific plans, including travel insurance for pre-existing conditions . However, there is a 90-day lookback period, and you must apply for the pre-existing condition waiver within 7 days of your initial trip payment.

As for Trawick’s travel-related coverage, the plan I looked at comes with $2,500 for baggage loss , which is pretty good. It’ll also cover up to 100% of your travel costs if you need to cancel your trip and up to 150% for trip interruption. Add-ons are available, including rental car, cruise, and Cancel For Any Reason coverage.

The price can quickly add up , especially if you purchase extra protection. Alternatively, Heymondo offers a much cheaper price while still providing an excellent amount of trip and health-related coverage. Heymondo also takes care of your health expenses upfront, so you don’t have to worry about paying for medical attention.

5. Travelex , a basic travel insurance for Morocco

Travelex offers medical travel insurance for Morocco , so it’s another company to consider. Travelex provides a fair amount of travel and health-related benefits, so it’s an overall well-balanced option.

There are just two plans: Travelex Basic and Travelex Select. I looked at the latter policy since it provided more coverage. That said, it couldn’t compete with most other companies on this list. Even the Select plan had lower coverage limits , such as $50,000 for medical expenses and $1,000 for baggage loss. Compare that to Heymondo , which provides four times the amount of emergency medical coverage, all for a fraction of the price.

travel insurance for morocco

I will say that Travelex is a viable option if you’re looking for family travel insurance since you can add children ages 1-17 to your policy at no additional cost. Moreover, Travelex covers people up to age 110, so it’s one of the most accessible options for seniors.

6. AIG Travel Guard , another Moroccan travel insurance

Finally, AIG Travel Guard is another Morocco travel insurance . Its plans come with no deductible and very good trip-related benefits. If you must cancel your vacation, AIG Travel Guard can recover up to 100% of your trip costs (up to 150% for trip interruption).

On the downside, the plan I looked at offered just $1,000 in baggage loss protection, which is not enough for a trip to Marrakech or anywhere else in Morocco. While the policy includes $500,000 for repatriation, it offers just $50,000 for emergency medical expenses . This is another point against the company, especially when shopping around for travel insurance to Morocco .

find the best travel insurance for morocco

I must also point out that AIG Travel Guard is the most expensive plan of all the options I have compared . It costs nearly three times as much as Heymondo , and Heymondo is the only one that pays your medical bills upfront.

To be fair, AIG is one of the few travel insurance companies with CFAR coverage (Cancel For Any Reason). It also offers supplemental upgrades like rental cars, flight accidents, and pre-existing condition coverage. However, you should read through the policy carefully to know how much coverage is included and for which conditions.

When you’re shopping around for Morocco travel health insurance , some things are non-negotiable. As you compare different coverage plans, keep these features in mind; this will help you choose the ideal policy for your needs.

Emergency medical expenses

First, emergency medical expense coverage is essential to any travel insurance to Morocco . This feature refers to the expenses covered by your insurer for things like doctor’s visits, treatments, tests, and hospital stays abroad.

Moroccan market, medical travel insurance for morocco

Emergency medical expenses, a crucial component of Morocco travel insurance

While prices in Morocco may be cheaper than in your home country, medical attention tends to be more expensive for foreigners. This is why choosing a plan with a high coverage is worth it. For example, Heymondo has excellent medical assistance coverage and pays your health bills upfront.

Important ! Read through the conditions and exclusions to know precisely which illnesses and incidents your policy covers.

Evacuation and repatriation

Your Morocco travel insurance should also cover evacuation and repatriation . With this benefit, the insurer will cover the costs if you must return to your home country due to an injury, illness, or the death of a family member.

Trip cancellation and interruption

Trip interruption is another essential part of any top-rated travel insurance for Marrakech or anywhere else in Morocco. Unexpected events may cut your trip short, so it’s important to have coverage that allows you to recover some or all of your travel costs.

Moroccan city, travel insurance requirements for morocco

Trip cancellation and interruption are also part of Morocco travel insurance

Trip cancellation is a benefit that may or may not be included in your international travel insurance for Morocco . If it’s not included in the basic policy, it’s worth adding trip cancellation insurance , even if it costs extra. Some companies even offer Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) insurance , which allows you to cancel your trip for absolutely any reason and still recover your travel costs.

For what it’s worth, Heymondo offers a high amount of coverage for trip interruption and cancellation.

Baggage loss, theft & damage

During several of my trips, I’ve had the misfortune of lost or damaged luggage. In fact, many travelers have dealt with this experience, which is why I recommend a Morocco travel insurance with great baggage protection benefits .

I like Heymondo in particular because it offers comprehensive coverage for your bags and even includes electronic equipment in this benefit. On the other hand, most insurers exclude electronics or only provide it for an extra fee. So, if you’re traveling with a camera, laptop, or tablet, keep that in mind!

Other types of coverage

Depending on the purpose of your trip, you may want additional coverage. For example, extreme sports coverage is a good idea if you plan on participating in adventure sports like scuba diving, skydiving, or hiking at high altitudes. Also, if your Moroccan travel insurance doesn’t include electronic equipment in its baggage loss benefit, consider adding it .

Now that you know about the best international travel insurance for Morocco , as well as what is and isn’t included, here are some additional tips to consider:

  • Prioritize coverage over price : I can’t stress this enough. Rather than focus on getting the cheapest Morocco travel insurance, choose a policy with a high amount of medical expense coverage.
  • Choose a company that pays your medical expenses upfront : I always prefer choosing an insurer that takes care of your medical bills upfront. This way, I can prioritize getting treatment and returning to my trip. In this case, Heymondo stands out since it’s the only company that pays for your healthcare immediately, so you don’t have to pay anything out of pocket.

Sahara desert, buy the best holiday insurance for morocco

  • No deductible : You should also look for Moroccan travel insurance with a $0 deductible. Some plans have deductibles of $100, $250, or more, so you’ll have to pay that amount out of pocket before your insurance coverage kicks in.
  • Pay attention to the details (easy-to-use website, clear terms and conditions, smooth sign-up process) : As a general rule of thumb, steer clear of providers with websites and fine print that’s difficult to decipher. This doesn’t bode well for any future customer issues. Purchasing an insurance policy should be straightforward, with simple instructions and all the conditions clearly laid out.
  • Customer service and 24-hour assistance : Finally, factor in the company’s customer support team. Are they easy to contact? Heymondo has a 24/7 travelers app that connects you with doctors and staff anytime, anywhere. You can also get in touch via phone or email.

Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll have the best experience with your Morocco travel insurance . Remember, this type of coverage is an investment, so treat it as such and don’t brush it off. We’ve all had times when something unexpected happened abroad, and our insurance coverage has been an invaluable asset.

Also, remember to take advantage of our 5% Heymondo discount to save on one of the best travel insurances for Morocco .

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Morocco

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. 11 things you need to know before visiting Marrakesh

11 things you need to know before visiting Marrakesh

This blog about things you need to know before visiting Marrakesh was created in collaboration with Admiral Travel Insurance. Travel insurance is something you should never travel without no matter where you’re going!

Marrakesh is one of those cities that keeps drawing me back in. It’s the exotic excitement of visiting somewhere completely different to home. It’s like stepping into Aladdin’s world (my favourite Disney film!) with palaces and secret gardens, crowds and hustle and magic and mystery waiting around every corner.

Yes, Marrakesh is an incredible place and the main thing I love is that it feels so different to home. But with this unfamiliarity you do need a bit of caution. You may have heard stories of pickpockets and scammers, unethical snake charmers and monkey captors, dodgy food and encounters with mysterious people.

Thankfully, it’s very easy to avoid this side of the city and enjoy the magic of Marrakesh without having any negative experiences. You need to be aware of the problems so you know what to avoid, so it’s worth doing as much research as possible to make sure you get the most out of your trip!

admiral travel insurance morocco

Here are some things you need to know before visiting Marrakesh

It’s hot.

OK, this is an obvious one but, really, it’s seriously hot and this is something to seriously consider when you’re planning which month to visit Marrakesh.

It’s so hot I’d even suggest avoiding a trip to Marrakech in June-August completely when the temperatures soar to 40 degrees C. Spring and autumn are perfect times to visit Marrakech and it can also make a great winter city break. I was in Marrakech in January and it was around 15 degrees and sunny everyday. For me, this is the perfect temperature for exploring and we could go hiking in the High Atlas Mountains without getting too hot.

It’s a really good idea to start your trip with a tour

Marrakesh is a labyrinth and the medina and old streets are almost impossible to navigate as a first-time visitor. There’s so much to see, do, eat, smell and buy that it would be very easy to spend your first day wandering around aimlessly and getting hopelessly lost.

For this reason I highly recommend taking a tour as soon as possible after you arrive.

You might take a walking tour to see the touristy highlights, a cycling tour to get out of town, a historical tour or, my personal favourite, a food tour! I took an evening food tour with Marrakech Food Tours and it was amazing. It was a great introduction to the medina and a great way to find the best local places to eat.

Things to do in Marrakech

You will get lost (and that’s OK)

Even if you have the best sense of direction, you’re probably going to get a little lost at some point. During my last visit I was with Sam who is amazing with directions but during my first visit I had 2 days alone and I was basically lost the entire time!

Make sure you always carry around the name and address of your accommodation, written in both English and Arabic, in case you need to ask someone for directions or get a taxi back to your hotel. I’d also make yourself a map with Google Maps with pins to the places you’d like to visit. Most UK visitors won’t have data included in their mobile roaming plan but you can load your map using the Wifi in your hotel and your phone will then use GPS to keep using the map throughout the day. Just remember to load it before you leave and don’t close down Google Maps or you’ll lose your map.

You will get hassled

There’s no getting around it, when you’re in the touristy areas you will get hassled to buy things. I’ve heard stories of sales tactics being really aggressive and many tourists find this unnerving.

If I’m honest, I’ve never experienced anything that made me feel uncomfortable.

I’ll give a firm and clear, ‘No thank you’, and continue walking without making eye contact.

Sam tends to get hassled more because he feels too rude to ignore people and will respond to their questions and have a laugh and a joke with them – and then he can’t get rid of them!

Do what you’ve got to do but don’t feel any obligation to have a 10 minute chat with everyone who catches your eye!

You can do serious luxury on a budget

Marrakech is cheap, very cheap! Which means you can have some seriously luxurious experiences for a fraction of the cost of other countries.

You may choose to simply have a low-cost city break or you may choose to have a seriously luxurious break for a similar price to a standard city break to somewhere like London, Barcelona or Rome.

Things to do in Marrakech

I stayed at Riad Kniza, a super luxe riad!

You should definitely do some day trips

Marrakech is an incredible city but there’s also so much to see outside the city – and there are loads of easy day trips you can take. We took a full day hiking trip to the High Atlas Mountains with Desert Trips Morocco and it was incredible! I’d also highly recommend an overnight desert trip where you camp in the sahara desert if you have the time.

You could book tours with your accommodation before you arrive or check out sites like Viator or Get Your Guide for tours you can book online in advance.

admiral travel insurance morocco

You’ll need to protect yourself from pick-pockets

Statistically, Marrakech isn’t actually too bad for pick-pockets and thieves but the city does have a bad reputation so it’s worth taking some precautions to protect yourself and your belongings. You could invest in some pick-pocket proof clothing but my main tip is to simply have very little worth stealing.

I’ll usually have a small, crossbody handbag or a bum bag that’s really easy to keep close. I’ll have a small amount of cash inside, one credit card and my phone and that’ll be it. I won’t wear any flashy jewellery or take important things out like my passport.

Of course, make sure you’ve got travel insurance just in case anything does happen!

Things to do in Marrakech

Agree on prices BEFORE – especially for taxis

The number 1 rule is that if prices aren’t written down you need to agree on a price BEFORE. This especially applies to taxis who are well known for taking you somewhere and then quoting an extortionate fee when you arrive.

If you’re nervous about negotiating with taxi drivers, then ask your accommodation to organise taxis for you. They’ll usually be able to arrange an airport pickup and can call taxis when you want to go places and they can agree fees for you. You might pay a little more than if you negotiated with a yellow cab on the street but it’s a good option if you’re not confident haggling!

Things to do in Marrakech

Dress respectfully

I have a blog post about what to wear in Morocco here.

As it’s so touristy you’ll probably see people wearing skimpy, strappy, inappropriate clothing but that doesn’t mean it’s OK. I recommend covering up from above your elbows to below your knees – so t-shirts and midi skirts are perfect!

It’s fun to window shop but actual shopping isn’t great

Whilst researching my trip to Marrakech I found that most people recommended having a day shopping. And yes, window shopping around the souks of Marrakech is fun but I didn’t actually find a whole lot worth buying. I once bought a beautiful leather bag in Morocco and I spent hours haggling over the price. But it wasn’t until I got home that I realised I actually could have bought a cheaper and better quality bag at home! The bag had broken within a year and left a weird smell that lingered in my wardrobe for much longer!

Things to do in Marrakech

Spend your dirham before you leave

The local currency is the Moroccan dirham but it’s illegal to take it in or out of the country. This means you’ll need to get it out of the cash machine when you arrive (there are cash machines at the airport) and make sure you’ve spent it all before you leave.

We also found that most places accept Euros which is handy if you already have some from a previous holiday but I’m sure you won’t be getting the best exchange rates!

Have you been to Marrakesh? Is there anything else you think should be on the list of things to know before you visit?

Veronika Primm

Friday 2nd of August 2019

Great tips, Monica. I experienced everything you did too :) My husband also had a hard time with the hasslers. I once bought a nice bracelet from a guy on the street, along with a set of earrings from a shop where they were helping with arranging a desert trip (which didn't work out) and I felt obliged to spend some dirhams.. Both items turned weird color in a matter of months. Window shopping is the best strategy in Marrakech, nothing more :)

Whether walking around the ancient streets of Marrakech or sunbathing on the sandy beaches of Agadir, finding yourself in a medical emergency in a foreign country can be daunting. Travel Insurance from AllClear means that you have comprehensive cover, whether that be for yourself, travel partner or family. As well as offering cover for travel disruption and lost luggage, make sure you are prepared for your holiday to Morocco.

Why do I need Travel Insurance for Morocco?

Frequently Asked Questions About Morocco Travel Insurance

When does the cover begin.

Full benefits begin on the travel dates you have selected. However, if you have chosen cancellation cover to be included, this cover begins as soon as you buy your policy. For this reason, it’s important to buy your Travel Insurance as early as possible – or as soon as you have your trip booked. You can book a single trip policy up to 12 months in advance of your holiday.

What is the age limit on Morocco Travel Insurance policy?

We’re pleased to say our AllClear Gold and Gold Plus policies have no age limits. During your quote, you’ll only be shown quotes which can cover your age category.

What’s the maximum trip length on a single trip Travel Insurance policy?

Allowed trip lengths vary between policies, however, the maximum you can get for a single trip quote online is for up to 92 days.

Is it best to buy a single or an annual multi-trip policy?

Whether buying a single or annual multi-trip policy is best for you, it depends on how often you intend to travel during the next 12 months.  If you are going on holiday multiple times throughout the year, an annual policy could work out better value for you.

With an annual multi-trip policy you can travel as many times as you like throughout the period of your insurance. There are, however, limits on the number of days you can be away for any one trip; which for some providers also depends upon your age.

Should You Get Travel Insurance for Morocco?

Morocco’s allure is undeniable, and with travel insurance, you can embrace its adventures while mitigating risks of theft, illness, and travel disruptions.

admiral travel insurance morocco

Fragrant spices, colorful lanterns and leather goods fill the winding labyrinths of Morocco’s souks. You reach for your wallet to buy some mint tea, but you can’t find it. Someone snatched it. Luckily, you remembered to buy travel insurance for Morocco.

Travel insurance companies cover the costs of unexpected incidents like hospital visits, missed connections and, in this particular case, pickpockets—unfortunately not a rarity in Morocco.

The reality is, you never know what could happen while traveling. That’s why we’re big believers in taking travel insurance with you, wherever in this world it is you go.

If you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.

What Is Travel Insurance?

Travel Insurance covers accidents, incidents and financial losses that could happen while you’re traveling.

There are numerous travel insurance companies on the market today. And while benefits will vary between each policy, they should contain the following categories:

  • Trip cancellation and trip interruption
  • Medical emergencies and evacuations
  • Stolen, damaged or lost baggage and property

It’s important to note that travel insurance is different than your domestic health care plan. That’s because your health insurance probably won’t cover you when you’re in Morocco. In fact, it probably doesn’t cover you anywhere besides your home country. And it likely doesn’t include trip protection against missed flights or stolen belongings.

7 Reasons You Need Travel Insurance for Morocco

No matter where you travel, it’s crucial to protect yourself with travel insurance. This is especially true in Morocco, where accidents and medical emergencies can happen at any time.

In the following scenarios, for example, you’ll be thankful you have travel insurance in Morocco.

The Weather Can Cause Heatstroke

Sahara Desert, Morocco

Summer in Morocco means extreme heat and high humidity. The temperature outside will likely lull around the low 80s at best—120 at its worst. If you’re not properly hydrated, you can get heatstroke, sending you straight to the hospital for emergency fluids.

Water Quality Is Questionable

Tap water in Morocco is not usually safe to drink, especially in small towns and villages. There’s a high chance that the water contains harmful bacteria and materials. Consequently, one sip (or brushing your teeth) could make you very sick.

Pickpockets Are Common in Morocco

Crowded areas, like Medinas and souks, can be teeming with thieves and pickpockets. And if you’re not paying attention, someone could easily steal your wallet or smartphone without you noticing.

Medical Care May Not Always Be Available

While hospitals are located in big cities, they are not common in rural areas of Morocco. If you get injured and need medical help in the desert or a small village, you’ll need to be transported (and possibly airlifted) to the nearest hospital.

Pedestrians Do Not Have the Right of Way

Crossing streets or walking through the Medina can be a dangerous task. Streets are filled with cars, scooters and even donkeys. And if the driver isn’t paying attention, you could get injured.

Some Food Might Make You Ill

Morocco Food

Moroccan food, while delicious, can make you sick if it’s not cooked properly. You don’t know if your fruit was washed with tainted water or if your meat was handled by dirty utensils. As a result, you could get a stomach bug or even food poisoning.

Henna Tattoo Ink Could be Dangerous

While you’re in Morocco, you might consider getting a henna tattoo from a local artist. And while most ink is perfectly safe, some can contain traces of para-phenylenediamine or PPD. This could cause allergic reactions and skin irritations that require medical treatment from a hospital.

What Does Travel Insurance in Morocco Cover?

Although coverage will vary depending on your policy, the best travel insurance for Morocco should cover the following situations.

Trip Cancellation

Trip cancellation will cover the cost of any unused travel expenses if you are unable to go on your trip to Morocco. It’s important to note that your reason for canceling needs to be covered by the insurance company. Some common reasons include injury, natural disasters or the death of a family member.

The amount of coverage also differs between different travel insurance companies. However, you should purchase a policy that covers the entire cost of your trip.

Trip Interruption

If for some reason you need to leave Morocco during your trip, then you’ll be thankful to have trip interruption coverage. That’s because, if you need to return home due to a family emergency, travel insurance will reimburse the cost of your unused flights and hotel stays.

Like trip cancellation coverage, your trip interruption plan should also cover the entire cost of your trip to Morocco.

Medical Emergencies

Morocco Bazaar

Unfortunately, accidents can happen when you’re traveling through Morocco. If you need to see a doctor or go to the hospital, a medical emergency plan will cover the cost of your medical bills.

Without travel insurance, you could be forced to pay thousands of dollars in hospital bills and medical treatments. For this reason, you should purchase a plan with at least $100,000 in emergency medical coverage.

Medical Evacuation and Repatriation

Not all cities in Morocco are equipped for emergency medical treatments. If you break your leg in the Sahara or get food poisoning in a small village, you’ll need to be transported to the medical facility.

Medical evacuation coverage will cover the costs of sending you to the nearest hospital for treatment. And if your injury becomes too severe, emergency repatriation will pay to send you back home for further care.

Being airlifted or transported can be extremely expensive. That’s why your travel insurance policy should include at least $100,000 in medical evacuation and repatriation.

Lost, Stolen or Damaged Property

Travel Insurance should also cover lost, stolen or damaged property. So if the airline loses your luggage or a pickpocket takes your camera, you can file a claim to be reimbursed for the cost of the items.

Keep in mind that most plans won’t cover items that were left unattended. And, they might not cover stolen cash, smartphones or passports.

Allianz : The Best Morocco Travel Insurance for Seniors

Every traveler should have travel insurance in Morocco, no matter how old they are. However, there are very few travel insurance companies that cover senior travelers. But with Allianz Global Assistance , there’s no age limit for insurance policyholders.

Not only is Allianz the largest insurance provider in the world, but it’s also one of the best companies for comprehensive travel insurance.

Although there are multiple plans to choose from, senior travelers should purchase the OneTrip Premier plan. This plan comes with $50,000 in medical emergency, $1,000,000 in medical evacuation and $2,000 in lost or stolen property.

InsureMyEquipment : The Best Travel Insurance for Camera Equipment

Taking photos is one of the best ways to remember your once-in-a-lifetime experience in Morocco. And if you’re traveling with expensive gear, you should also consider purchasing travel insurance for your camera equipment.

That’s because other travel insurance policies only cover electronics up to a certain amount. Therefore, you might only get reimbursed for a fraction of what your camera or gear costs.

With InsureMyEquipment, your camera, lenses and other electronics will be covered against theft or damage. But keep in mind that this policy only protects equipment. InsureMyEquipment does not offer any medical or trip coverage.

How to File a Claim With Your Travel Insurance if Something Goes Wrong in Morocco

If something goes awry on your trip to Morocco, it’s important to know how to file a claim.

The exact process will vary depending on your travel insurance company. But generally speaking, the following guidelines will help you file a claim for reimbursement.

Take Precautions Before You Travel

Tangier lit up at night in Morocco

Even before you arrive in Morocco, there are steps you can take to protect your trip as well as yourself.

To start, you should print and store your travel insurance information. This can be a card or a printed document. Make sure the information includes your full name and policy number.

You should also fill out all the information inside your passport. Include your full name, address and phone number, as well as the details of an emergency contact.

It’s also a good idea to take a photocopy of your passport. That way, you can have all the necessary information without carrying your original passport with you during the day.

Finally, make a list of the in-network medical providers in Morocco. If you need to visit the hospital during your trip, you’ll already have the names of hospitals and facilities that accept your travel insurance.

Call the Insurance Provider’s Hotline

A good travel insurance company will offer a 24-hour contact number. If your situation is not urgent, you can call your insurance provider to inform them of the accident and to start the claim filing process. They can also advise on the next steps, like where to find the nearest police station or medical facility.

As always, go to the hospital or police station right away if you’re in an emergency. You can always inform your travel insurance provider after.

Document the Incident or Accident

Chefchaouen, Morocco

If you need to file a claim, gather the necessary documents, receipts or written notices. In order to get reimbursed, you will need to provide proof of the incident to your travel insurance provider.

Let’s say, for example, that someone steals your iPad while you were in a cafe. In this situation, you will need an incident report from the policy and, probably, the receipt that shows the cost of the iPad. And if you break your leg, you’ll need to have the written medical report as well as the itemized bill.

Remember, the more proof you provide your travel insurance company, the more likely it is that they’ll reimburse you.

File the Travel Insurance Claim

Many providers allow you to submit your documents and file the claim from their website. However, other companies may require that everything is sent by mail.

Take note of when you need to submit your claim to your insurance provider by. Different companies have different timelines. But generally speaking, you have between 10 and 60 days to file your claim.

Get Reimbursed

After you’ve submitted your claim, you will need to wait for a response from your Morocco travel insurance company.

If they require further information, they will get in touch by phone or mail. However, this could delay your approval, which means you should send as much information as you can in the beginning.

When the company approves your claim, it may take them anywhere from a few days to several weeks to reimburse you.

Final Thoughts

Many people travel to Morocco and return home safely. But, even if you never have to use it, travel insurance gives you the peace of mind to fully experience everything Morocco has to offer.

With travel insurance, your provider will protect you while road-tripping through the Sahara or surfing on the coast of Taghazout—and everything in between.

While it’s important for your trip to Morocco, travel insurance is essential anywhere you travel. So before you leave home, don’t forget to purchase the right travel insurance policy for you.

What Countries are included in European Travel Insurance?

What countries are included in European travel insurance?

When it comes to buying travel insurance for multiple countries in Europe, what does 'Europe' actually mean?

Perhaps your wondering is Iceland included in travel insurance for Europe? What about Egypt?

Here we’ll explain which countries are included in European travel insurance – As well as take a look as to why it is important to have this travel insurance cover in place for your trip to Europe.

European travel insurance: what countries does it cover?

When it comes to travel insurance for Europe, the countries included in Europe vary between insurers, and sometimes it is quite loosely applied to include countries not always considered part of Europe.

In general, for travel insurance to Europe the entirety of the European Union is included, along with:

  • Faroe Islands
  • Liechtenstein
  • Switzerland

This means that if you require Schengen travel insurance, you will likely find that a European travel insurance policy will cover you for your trip.

For various political and economic reasons, these countries have not joined the EU, but are still regarded as ‘European' by many insurers.

Equally, many would-be holidaymakers searching for ‘EU travel insurance' may in fact be looking for cover for non-EU countries.

Ankra Castle Turkey

Turkey in Europe? Is Turkey in Europe for travel insurance?

As outlined above while Turkey - a country that borders Syria and Iraq to the east - and has only  3% of its landmass in Europe  – it is considered as Europe in the case of travel insurance.

Great news for those of you visiting Turkey and planning a trip to Istanbul , a stay of the amazing Turkish Riviera , hot air ballooning in Cappadocia, or looking to embrace any of the other amazing destinations that Turkey has to offer.

Whilst this revelation that Turkey travel insurance is covered under Europe may be eye-opening enough, there are other nations that are also sometimes considered part of Europe as regards travel insurance, which you might otherwise expect not to be:

European holiday insurance for Africa?

Yes, that’s correct, travel insurance for Morocco, travel insurance for Tunisia and travel insurance for Egypt will often be categorised within European travel insurance cover.

While the above destinations are technically in the African continent, for various complex reasons they are sometimes thought of (or consider themselves to be): ‘north Africans'; closer culturally to the Middle East; and/or closer to Europe (e.g. Morocco is an associate EU member).

Is Cape Verde in Europe for travel insurance?

Unlike travel insurance for Turkey, Morocco and Egypt, which are often included under European travel insurance policies, Cape Verde isn’t normally covered within travel insurance policies for Europe.

What travel insurance do I need for Cape Verde?

For Cape Verde travel insurance, you will normally be required to purchase a travel insurance policy that covers worldwide travel.

Interrail and European Interrail travel insurance

Interrail - something of a European institution - is an interesting example of how the notion of Europe is blurred: Turkey is an Interrail member, Morocco used to be, but Ukraine is not.

Offering an alternative to flying, an Interail pass will give you the freedom to discover over 40,000 destinations in 33 countries, providing a great way to travel Europe.

If you are intending to use an Interrail pass to explore Europe, a travel insurance policy from starttravel.co.uk will provide you with the assurance that you have Interrail insurance cover for delays, cancellations and missed departures as well as a host of other travel insurance policy benefits.

To find the best travel insurance for your interrail journey, get a quote online today.

What is the best policy if I travel to Europe often?

Looking for travel insurance to Europe from the UK?

If you plan on visiting Europe several times a year, then you'll benefit from annual travel insurance for multiple countries in Europe; known as a multi-trip or annual European travel insurance policy - instead of a single-trip policy .

This is likely to save you time and hassle because you don't have to arrange travel cover every time you leave the UK. It is also likely to be considerably cheaper than if you bought single trip policies.

It has also been argued that buying an annual or multi-trip travel policy from a travel insurance company might protect you from price surges in single trip policies.

However, here at Start Travel we're committed to providing affordable travel insurance for single trip and annual customers.

Do I need travel insurance for Europe?

For those on a budget, or with a mind to save money, the question: Do I need travel insurance for Europe? - may arise.

This is perhaps understandable - but it's not worth the risk.

While many popular European destinations are only two or three hours away from the UK, it's critical to take out adequate travel insurance for your trip.

Things can and do go wrong for UK travellers every day.

Even if you're young, fit and healthy, unexpected events can happen: for example, poor driving, unsatisfactory food hygiene and petty crime may be more common in some countries compared to the UK.

But let's talk specifics. What are you most likely to claim for while visiting Europe?

The most common reasons to claim on travel insurance are:

Trip cancellation or abandonment

There are many reasons why you might need to abandon your holiday, from burst pipes to family illnesses.

Without adequate insurance, you would be paying for a holiday you never took.

But with the right cover, you'll get compensated, so you can book another break later on.

According to one survey by Expedia in 2018 , UK families spend an average of £4,800 on each overseas break. Most data suggests over a third of out-of-country travel insurance claims relate to trip cancellation/abandonment.

Medical treatment for sunburn

Medical expenses

Around a third of claims relate to medical costs.

If you fall ill or get injured while in Europe and require emergency assistance, you could face large medical bills if you're not covered, or if you do not have a valid Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), the replacement for EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) for UK citizens, post-Brexit.

It is important to ensure that you have informed your travel insurance provider of any pre-existing medical conditions.

If you need to make a medical claim while overseas and you have not informed your insurer of any pre-existing condition, it may invalidate you your cover.

What is a GHIC Card?

The GHIC ensures you'll receive free or discounted state medical care in the event of a medical emergency (this is reciprocated if a national of that country falls ill in the UK).

But it's worth noting that the GHIC won't cover you for non life-threatening injuries.

Covid-19 Protect

If you are travelling to Europe, it is also possible to add our additional Covid-19 Protect cover to your travel insurance, which offers even greater levels of cover for even greater peace of mind for your European trip.

Loss of money or possessions

It's understandable that people on holiday let their guard down occasionally - but it can mean an increased risk of losing money or possessions.

In some mainland European cities pickpocketing is more common than in the UK - and many perpetrators can spot a tourist a mile off. But such events don't need to ruin your holiday.

A good insurer will reimburse you for lost/stolen baggage, possessions and gadgets.

If you do happen to find yourself stranded abroad with no money, here’s what to do .

Travel delay and missed departure

Another common problem is travel delays or missed departures.

Being unable to make a flight or a train journey - perhaps because of public transport failures or adverse weather conditions - can be hugely costly (especially at the last minute).

But with a good travel insurance policy , you'll be able to get the extra costs recouped.

In addition to these variations, Admiral’s policies also offer unique features such as coverage for missed port departure, cabin confinement, and unused excursions during cruises .

Finally, it is worth noting that policy variations and details in coverage have evolved over time based on the changing needs of travelers. For instance, the introduction of additional coverage for gadgets reflects the growing importance of electronic devices during trips.

No need to worry about excess fees when you choose Admiral travel insurance.

Excess waiver

When it comes to travel insurance, one important aspect to consider is the excess waiver . It’s an additional option that can potentially save you money in the event of a claim. But what exactly is an excess waiver and why is it important?

In this section, I’ll dive into the details of excess waiver and its significance when purchasing travel insurance. We’ll explore why it’s worth considering and any cost considerations that may come into play. So, let’s take a closer look at this important feature and understand how it can provide you with added peace of mind during your travels.

Additional option to waive the excess on travel insurance claims

An Extra Alternative to Eliminate the Surplus on Insurance Claims

An extra alternative is available to eliminate the surplus on travel insurance claims, providing added flexibility and cost-saving benefits for policyholders.

  • Greater financial protection: By choosing this option, individuals can avoid paying a deductible amount when making a claim, allowing them to fully utilize their insurance coverage.
  • Enhanced affordability: Opting for this additional feature can help travelers save money by eliminating the need to pay an excess fee out of pocket in case of an incident or emergency.
  • Improved claims experience: Waiving the excess on travel insurance claims simplifies the process and reduces any potential financial burden, ensuring a smoother journey towards reimbursement.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that this option can be particularly useful for those who frequently travel and are more prone to encountering unforeseen situations that may require filing an insurance claim.

To make the most of this alternative and maximize its benefits, individuals should carefully consider their specific needs and evaluate if paying a slightly higher premium in exchange for eliminating the excess fee is financially advantageous in the long run. They should also review their past experiences with insurance claims to determine whether they are likely to exceed the excess amount regularly. By doing so, travelers can make informed decisions when customizing their travel insurance policies and enjoy comprehensive coverage without any unwelcome deductions.

Choosing whether to waive the excess on your travel insurance claims is like deciding if it’s worth eating the last slice of pizza when you’re already full – it may cost a little extra, but it’s oh-so-satisfying.

Importance and cost considerations

  • Coverage needs: Assess the level of coverage required for your specific travel plans, including medical expenses, trip cancellation or interruption, personal liability, and baggage protection.
  • Comprehensive benefits: Evaluate the benefits offered by the insurance policy, such as emergency medical cover, 24-hour assistance helpline, and reimbursement for additional expenses due to travel delays or missed connections.
  • Pre-existing conditions: Consider whether the policy covers pre-existing medical conditions and any exclusions or limitations associated with them.
  • Deductibles and premiums: Compare the deductible amounts and premium costs among different policies to find the one that offers a balance between affordability and coverage.
  • Policy exclusions: Review the policy’s list of exclusions to understand what incidents or scenarios may not be covered and if there are any specific conditions under which claims may be denied.

It is important to note that each traveler’s requirements may differ based on factors such as age, destination, activities planned, and personal circumstances. Taking into account these importance and cost considerations can help you make an informed decision when choosing a travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

To ensure you find suitable coverage at an optimal cost:

  • Assess your individual needs and preferred level of protection.
  • Obtain quotes from multiple insurers to compare prices.
  • Consider bundling your travel insurance with other policies (such as home or car insurance) to potentially save on premiums.
  • Opt for a higher deductible if you are comfortable covering larger out-of-pocket expenses in exchange for lower premium costs.
  • Read the policy documents carefully before purchasing to fully understand the terms, conditions, and any optional extras offered.

By evaluating your specific requirements, comparing policies from various providers, and considering these suggestions, you can make a well-informed decision about your travel insurance coverage while balancing importance and cost considerations.

  • Travel insurance for Morocco

Perched on the northern tip of Africa, Morocco’s long been a popular destination for UK holidaymakers. If you’re heading there soon, make sure you’ve got good travel insurance to cover you.

Here we’ve looked at how you can access medical care, travel risks to keep in mind and what travel insurance policies may help to safeguard against. Some useful notes on the local culture and getting around.

Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco

Morocco: go prepared

It’s probably been a good few years since Morocco was redolent of Casablanca, but its romance certainly hasn’t gone anywhere. Instead of the iconic coastal city, the images that spring to mind are of Marrakech and its spice-coloured souks, its unique architecture and its ancient mystery.

As the gateway between Europe and Africa, Morocco boasts a diverse and vibrant culture that pulls Brits for long holidays, city breaks and even day-trips from Southern Spain. Regardless of which one of these you’ve booked yourself into, make sure you’ve got good travel insurance . And check the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) travel advice before you go, as travelling against it could invalidate your cover.

Protect what matters when you go with good travel insurance

Healthcare for brits in morocco.

It's advisable for anyone travelling to Morocco needs to have good medical travel insurance to help pay expenses should something go wrong. It’s important to pay a visit to your healthcare practitioner two months before your departure in order to make sure you have all of the necessary travel vaccinations , including any that might be particular to you.

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, it’s vital that this is discussed in your application for travel insurance.

Morocco has both public and private hospitals. Seek advice from a medical practitioner about travelling to Morocco if you have existing medical conditions, as they can tell you whether such a trip is advisable. This is important information to know prior to departure.

Much of the country is inhospitable terrain – from mountains to desert – and, as such, medical facilities outside of cities and towns can be scarce. It is important to know where your nearest medical centre is if you know that you’ll be spending any amount of time away from urban areas.

The number for emergency services in Morocco is 150.

Travel risks in Morocco

The type of travel risks associated with Morocco are common to many countries, particularly those with populous and poorer-than-average cosmopolitan areas. Be vigilant against street crime such as pickpocketing, back-snatching, theft from mopeds, counterfeit or sub-standard merchandise sales, distraction techniques and assault.

There are a few simple rules to follow to help guard against scams and street crime. If you’re visiting one of Morocco’s many glorious beaches, take steps to protect your valuables .

It’s unwise to carry important documents such as your passport, valuables and excessive cash on you in Morocco. If you have to, try to wear a money belt underneath your clothes that make life difficult for would-be pickpockets.

Terrorist groups are known to operate in Morocco, and it is possible that attacks may target tourist areas. This has led to an increased presence of security personnel in busy places as well as those with a greater population of tourists.

If you are the victim of a crime, you will need to report this to the police immediately. If you later wish to make a claim on your travel insurance against lost or stolen items, you will need a police report.

Moroccan culture

Morocco has a colourful history comprising Berber, Arab, French, Spanish and broader European influence. Its culture marries the values of its different legacies in a way that makes it truly unique and a thrilling place to visit.

As a Muslim country, there are different social restrictions to those that we are used to in the UK. Respect local laws and customs around propriety and behaviour, such as not engaging in public displays of affection and dressing respectfully, particularly during religious holidays and near holy sites.

Sexual relations outside of marriage are illegal in Morocco, and unmarried couples may be asked to sleep in separate rooms by their hotels (or asked for evidence of their marriage). Within designated tourist sites or very touristy areas, this is likely to be less of an issue. Homosexuality is also illegal, so visit the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association's website for guidance on attitudes to sexual orientation in different countries .

During Ramadan, be sensitive to when you eat and whom you eat around. It can cause offence to eat and drink in front of those who are fasting, however for many it is perfectly acceptable that non-Muslims should eat and drink normally. It is best to exercise caution.

Alcohol is permitted in licensed venues such as restaurants, hotels and bars, but drinking in other contexts can lead to arrest. And remember, if you need to claim on your insurance for something that happens while you're under the influence of alcohol your policy may not be valid. The perceived spreading of non-Islamic religious ideas, including Bibles in Arabic, is illegal. Pornography is illegal in Morocco, and the use or possession of illegal drugs can come with very severe penalties.

The art of Morocco is some of the most culturally diverse and exciting in the Arab world and can be seen at a great many locations throughout the capital and the country. Music festivals have sprung up around the country in recent years, with many focusing on World music and others on more contemporary, Western artists.

The European influences of Morocco have combined with its broadly Islamic culture to create a diverse and unique theatre scene, including many festivals in beautiful locations. Arts and crafts are popular, with marketplaces throughout the country offering beautiful ornaments for you to purchase.

Getting around

According to the  FCDO safety and security guidance for Morocco , the country's incidence of road fatalities is 9 times that of the UK. Take extra care driving on dangerous roads or in compromised visibility, such as during bad weather or at night. Be wary of other drivers who may not observe traffic laws, and stick to speed limits. The risks of driving are fewer outside of cosmopolitan areas, however do not take road surface quality for granted.

Train travel is popular, comfortable and serves much of the country. Beyond the locations that trains go to, buses are available. Longer distance shared taxis and buses can be a cost-effective way of getting around.

Do I need travel insurance for Morocco?

If you’re travelling anywhere in the world it’s recommended you take out travel insurance to cover the trip – and that includes visiting Morocco.

Like many other popular destinations, the country has a high crime rate. If your belongings are stolen – or lost or damaged – you may be able to claim for them on your travel insurance policy.

Make sure your cover includes emergency medical and repatriation expenses in case you fall ill or are injured while you’re away. It should also reimburse you in the event of cancellation and curtailment of your trip. Check what Covid-19 cover  a policy provides before you buy.

Check the policy wording closely to see when cancellation cover applies, and if you need anything more than the standard cover for any activities you’ll be doing.

Will I be covered for activities in Morocco?

There are a few parts of Morocco where adventure activities are a greater temptation, such as sandboarding in the Sahara, watersports on the beach or mountain activities in the northeast. If you plan on trying any adventure activity, make sure you’re covered for it first.

Check your policy to see whether you can get involved and, if you’re not covered, speak to your insurer to see if there is a way you can extend the scope of your policy. Remember that you might not be automatically covered for a range of commonplace activities, such as pony-trekking, so be sure to read your policy thoroughly to understand whether you are taking any unnecessary risks.

Does Morocco come under Europe for travel insurance?

Morocco is in northern Africa so falls outside of Europe in the eyes of most travel insurance providers, including Post Office. But if you’re visiting the country and want to buy travel insurance for your trip, always check the policy wording to be sure.

Holiday Insurance to Turkey

With almost six months of summer in the south, Turkey has long been a favourite of British sunseekers who flock to the sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters of the Turkish Riviera.

The fascinating country has a rich history, perfect for curious holidaymakers who want to explore the old meets new of Istanbul and the country’s ancient ruins.

For those with a head for heights, Aladaglar National Park has become a popular choice for rock climbers, while walkers can tackle a whole host of trekking routes taking in the country’s mighty mountains and valleys.

With so many exciting adventures on offer, it pays to get the right travel insurance in place for a trip to Turkey – particularly if you need to access healthcare or medical treatment while you’re away.

Do I need travel insurance for Turkey?

Travel insurance isn’t compulsory, but it’ll cover you for emergency medical treatment and the unexpected things like:

  • Cancelling or cutting your trip short
  • Your personal belongings being stolen
  • The airline losing your bags

Admiral has three levels of cover - Admiral, Admiral Gold and Admiral Platinum - so you can choose your cover based on your budget and needs. Plus you can choose Single Trip if you just want to cover one holiday, or annual cover which will protect you for multiple jaunts throughout the year.

No matter which you choose, all our policies cover:

Read the full list of benefits in the policy summary booklet .

Is Turkey part of Europe?

For insurance purposes, we class Turkey as part of Europe. Our European Travel Insurance covers 50 countries, and stretches the boundaries of Europe to include places like:

Some insurers may not class Turkey as part of Europe, so you’d need to look at their worldwide cover – make sure you check before buying your policy.

Despite Turkey being classed as Europe, the EHIC (European travel insurance card) and the new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) aren’t valid there so you’re liable to pay for any medical costs out of your own pocket if you don’t have travel insurance in place.

Do I need a visa for Turkey?

British citizens with a standard UK passport can travel to Turkey without a visa for 90 days during any 180 day period. If you plan to stay in the country for longer than 90 days, a Short Term Residence Permit will be needed. These can be applied for from the Turkish Provincial Directorate of Migration Administration

British citizens with a different type of British nationality (e.g British Overseas Citizen) will need to apply for an e-visa from the Turkish E-Visa website before travelling, as these passports are considered “Special Passports” .

Is it safe to travel to Turkey?

Despite years of political uncertainty and terrorist attacks (as recently as 2017) in the south and east of the country, as well as Ankara and Istanbul, millions of Brits continue to flock to Turkey every year.

In 2018, Brits made 2.3million visits to the country, most of which are trouble free, according the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

There is, at the time of writing (March 2019) advice against travel to areas within a 10km border with Syria. The FCDO also advises against all but essential travel to:

  • All other areas of Sirnak, Mardin, Kilis (including Kilis city) and Hatay provinces
  • Provinces of Diyarbakir, Tunceli and Hakkari

You won’t be covered by Admiral Travel Insurance if you visit a country that the FCDO has advised against ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’.

What if I have a pre-existing condition?

A pre-existing condition is a short or long term illness or injury you have or have had before you buy travel insurance. This includes having symptoms, tests, diagnosis or medical treatment for a condition.

You can declare your pre-existing conditions during the quote process to see if we can offer cover. If you’re unsure what needs to be declared or if you're unable to find your condition on the medical conditions list, please contact us on 0333 234 9913 .

Your pre-existing conditions won’t be covered unless you’ve:

  • Declared them all on your policy
  • Received written confirmation that we’ll cover your medical condition
  • Paid any additional premium in full

Policy terms and conditions apply. Please note, if you’ve had a positive diagnosis of Covid-19 and been prescribed medication, received treatment, or had a consultation with a doctor or hospital specialist for any medical condition in the past two years, this needs to be declared on your policy.

If you don’t tell us about your pre-existing conditions or give us incorrect information, your policy may be invalid, and we may refuse all or part of any claim you submit.
