If you’re one of the 2 million people who follow Alex Strohl or 676,000 people who double-click on Benjamin Hardman ’s Instagram photos, we may have just found your 2021 dream trip. The two adventure photographers are teaming up with 66˚North , a nearly 100-year-old Icelandic outerwear company that recently launched in the U.S. market, to give away an epic trip to Iceland next year.

In addition to round-trip flights to Iceland for two from any location where Icelandair operates a direct flight, the winner and a guest will also get to spend a day with Strohl and Hardman exploring their favorite off-the-beaten-path Icelandic locations and learning about Arctic photography. Even if you don’t win, the runners-up prize is still pretty great: 66˚North will also give three people its Snæfell waterproof shell jacket , which regularly costs $500 and is available in both men’s and women’s sizes.

You can find them at @alexstrohl and @benjaminhardman .

The prize winners will be drawn at random on December 21, 2020, and the trip will take place in 2021 on dates that work with both the winner’s and the photographers’ schedules. While accommodations are not included in the prize package, you can consult AFAR’s favorite hotels in Iceland for inspiration.

Iceland’s borders currently remain closed to most U.S. and Canadian passport holders. But with the first vaccines being administered this month around the world, hopefully the E.U. will lift its restrictions so the contest winners can take this trip sooner rather than later in 2021.

Duke cancer doctor, patient embark on unique cycling trip in Iceland

Lauren Johnson Image

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Thirteen days. That's the countdown for two people in the Triangle headed to Iceland for a unique adventure.

The pair are an unlikely duo - doctor and patient - with a shared passion for raising awareness and money for research into myeloma, a blood cancer.

Dr. Cristina Gasparetto is a hematologist at Duke by day and a cycling enthusiast when she's not studying blood diseases and cancers.

"Thomas started to cycle, I love cycling, it's what I do when I escape from work," Gasparetto said.

Her love for both is rolling into an expedition in Iceland with one of her longtime patients, Thomas Goode.

"It's going to be difficult, the cold, the wind rain ... we are ready to go for this adventure," she said.

When anybody is diagnosed with cancer, a lot of people, the first thing they think is, am I going to die? How long do I have to live? - Thomas Goode, myeloma patient

Gasparetto met Goode as a patient in 2007.

"I was told I was a prime candidate for a stem cell transplant," Goode said.

Back then, at 34 years old, upper back pain led to his diagnosis of myeloma.

"When anybody is diagnosed with cancer, a lot of people, the first thing they think is, am I going to die? How long do I have to live?" Goode said.

Three transplants later, Goode is gearing up for a bike tour in Iceland.

For three days and two nights, he'll be pedaling in his purpose and hoping to inspire others along the way.

"I'm in a great place, and I'm happy about it," Goode said. "And I just want to let everyone know I am living with my disease."

Gasparetto said she was most excited about the community of doctors, patients and caregivers they will meet on their journey.

"It is also an opportunity to be together and share our stories," she said.

The two are each hoping to raise $15,000.

They will leave on Aug. 28.

Planning a 6-day Iceland itinerary ? You're in for a treat! At Reykjavík Cars , we've been navigating adventurers like you through Iceland's mystical landscapes since 2013. From geysers to glaciers and the mesmerizing Northern Lights, we've seen it all.

And, drawing from our personal escapades (including that amusing time we mistook a particularly tall pile of snow for a new mountain), we're here to ensure your Icelandic journey is nothing short of epic. Ready to embark on an adventure with a touch of our local expertise? Let's hit the road!

Introduction to Iceland

Before embarking on your 6-day Iceland itinerary, it's essential to get acquainted with the basics of this enchanting land. From its unique geography to its rich culture, here's what you'll need to know:

Indeed, this volcanic and geothermal hotspot nestled in the North Atlantic is a real treasure trove!

6 day iceland itinerary

As you plot your 6-day itinerary of Iceland, don't be fooled by the country's frosty moniker. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Iceland is surprisingly temperate. Winter sees temperatures below freezing, while summer stays cool around 10-15°C (50-59°F). Remember, if you dislike the weather, just wait a bit; it's infamously unpredictable, with rain, snow, sun, and wind all possible in one day. And let's not overlook the magical Northern Lights in winter and the Midnight Sun in summer.

Delve into Iceland's vibrant culture during your 6 days in Iceland tour. This island is renowned for its rich history, arts, and folklore rooted in Norse traditions. With globally recognized sagas, a high literacy rate, an impressive number of authors per capita , and celebrated music artists like Björk, Iceland's culture is truly captivating.

Don't miss their wide variety of Icelandic festivals , and do watch this entertaining YouTube video for a comprehensive feel.

Things to Know Before You Go

When to Visit Iceland

Winter trip to Iceland

Best Time of Year To Visit

A 6-day trip to Iceland can be a mesmerizing experience year-round, but timing can enhance your adventure further. Let's prod Mother Nature a bit to find out when she's at her best in Iceland:

  • Summer (June to August): These months bring out Iceland's true colors, offering long daylight hours (up to 24 during the Summer Solstice) and access to F-roads that are otherwise impassable. It's an ideal time for hiking and wildlife spotting.
  • Winter (December to February): If witnessing the Northern Lights is high on your bucket list, winter is your golden ticket. Be ready for shorter days and icy roads, though. Puffin sightings? Count them out in winter.
  • Spring and Autumn (March to May & September to November): These shoulder months offer a balance of moderate weather, fewer tourists, and reasonable prices. It's a good compromise for a 6-day trip to Iceland, although the weather can be unpredictable.

Things To Pack for Different Seasons

Packing for a 6-day tour of Iceland can feel like preparing for a trip to Narnia, thanks to Iceland's diverse weather conditions. Here are some essential items you'll need for each season:

  • Summer: Don't be deceived by the word ' summer '; temperatures still average around 10-13°C (50-55°F). Light, layer-able clothing, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy hiking boots are must-haves.
  • Winter: This season calls for maximum insulation. Pack thermal clothing, a heavy winter jacket, gloves, and a hat. Don't forget a good pair of waterproof boots for those snowy escapades.
  • Spring/Autumn: These transitional seasons require a mix of summer and winter wear. Always pack layers and rainproof gear. After all, Icelandic weather is as unpredictable as a plot twist in a thriller!
