Dodge Journey Door Won’t Open: Solutions for Inside or Outside Issues

In this guide, we will explore potential causes and solutions for a Dodge Journey door that refuses to open, whether from the inside, outside, or both.

The troubleshooting steps will depend on whether one or both handles are functioning .

Faulty mechanisms, damaged components, or normal wear and tear can all contribute to a door that won’t open.

The factors at play may vary based on whether the issue is occurring internally or externally, or both.

Dodge Journey P0102

Door Won’t Open from the Inside Only: Causes

Several common issues could lead to the interior door handles of a Dodge Journey failing to respond. We’ll address the most prevalent ones below.

Child Safety Lock

Dodge Journey Door won't open from the inside

Modern vehicles include a child safety lock mechanism to prevent accidental door opening. The safety lock is typically positioned near or on the interior door handle and may require pressure to deactivate it.

Start by checking the child safety lock.

Worn or Faulty Inner Door Handle

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

Worn or broken door handles are a common reason why your vehicle’s doors won’t open from the inside.

Over time, frequent use or mishandling can cause wear and tear or damage to the interior door handle.

When this happens, replacing the door handle might be necessary to ensure the proper functionality of your Journey’s door.

Lock Actuator

Door won't open from the inside causes

Faulty door lock actuators can also result in the door not opening from the inside.

A door lock actuator is a small motor responsible for electronically locking or unlocking the door. Malfunctions could cause the door to remain locked even when the interior handle is pulled.

In this scenario, inspecting and potentially replacing the door lock actuator is necessary to resolve the issue.

While attempting to open the door, manually pull the door lock to the unlock position. If the door opens with the added pressure, it’s an indication that the door lock mechanism or power lock might be failing.

Faulty Door Handle Cable

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

An additional possible cause for a Dodge Journey’s door not opening from the inside is a damaged or disconnected linkage connecting the interior door handle to the latch mechanism.

The linkage consists of rods and clips that enable the door to open when the handle is engaged.

If any part of this linkage is damaged or disconnected, the door will remain shut from the inside. A comprehensive inspection of the linkage components, along with reattachment or replacement of damaged parts, is essential.

Door Lock Mechanism

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

A malfunctioning door lock mechanism can also hinder the Journey’s interior door from opening.

The door lock mechanism encompasses the latch, lock cylinder, and other internal components that secure the door when locked.

Faults in any of these components could impede proper door functionality, preventing it from opening from the inside.

Door Won’t Open from the Outside Only: Causes

An issue occasionally encountered with the Dodge Journey is the inability to open the door from the outside, while it remains functional from the inside.

Various reasons could contribute to this problem, and understanding these causes can help diagnose and resolve it effectively.

Exterior Door Handle Issues

Over time and through frequent use, the exterior door handle of the Journey can become worn out or damaged. This wear can result in improper engagement with the door latch mechanism, preventing the door from opening.

In such cases, replacing the door handle is advisable. The handle might feel lighter or may pull higher compared to the other exterior door handles.

Faulty Door Latch Assembly

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

The door latch assembly of your Dodge Journey is responsible for securely holding the door closed and releasing it when the handle is pulled.

If the latch assembly malfunctions or is damaged, it might fail to release the door when the exterior handle is activated. This issue can usually be resolved by replacing the faulty latch assembly.

Linkage Issues

The exterior door handle is connected to the latch assembly via a series of rods or cables referred to as the linkage.

If any of these components become disconnected or misaligned, the door handle won’t function properly from the outside. Inspecting the linkage and making necessary adjustments can rectify this problem.

Frozen or Jammed Lock

In colder climates or specific conditions, the door lock mechanism of your Journey can freeze or become jammed, preventing the door from opening even when using the exterior handle.

Applying a de-icing agent or penetrating oil can help alleviate the lock’s condition and allow the door to open.

General Door Repair Instructions

The following are general instructions for repairing doors. Keep in mind that the assembly of the door panel can vary based on the model year of your Journey. We recommend searching on YouTube for your specific model year and watching videos for detailed guidance. This can save you considerable time and effort.

Identifying the Problem

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

When dealing with a Dodge Journey door that won’t open, it’s crucial to identify the underlying cause. Unfortunately, gaining access to the linkage might require removing the door panel.

Pay attention to any unusual noises while operating the door and inspect the lock and handle for signs of wear or damage.

Disassembling the Door Panel

Prior to making repairs, you need to disassemble the door panel of your Dodge Journey. Begin by removing the screws that secure the armrest and handle.

Next, gently pry the door panel away from the door frame using a flathead screwdriver or a panel removal tool.

Exercise caution to avoid damaging the panel’s clips, the paint on the door jam, or upholstery. Once the panel is detached from the frame, disconnect any electrical connectors and set the panel aside.

Repairing the Fault

Based on the identified issue, proceed with the appropriate repair:

  • Broken door handle: Replace the door handle by unscrewing the mounting bolts, carefully removing the old handle, and attaching a new one.
  • Faulty lock mechanism: Inspect the lock for damage or misalignment and repair or replace the necessary components.
  • Damaged internal door parts: Examine all internal components (such as the door latch, rods, and levers) and replace any damaged parts.

Reassembling the Door Panel

After completing the repair, reassemble the door panel of your Dodge Journey using these steps:

  • Reconnect any electrical connectors that were disconnected earlier.
  • Align the clips on the door panel with the holes in the door frame, then gently push the panel into place.
  • Reattach the screws to secure the armrest and handle.
  • Test the door’s functionality to ensure everything is working correctly.

By following these general door repair instructions, Dodge Journey owners can address a door that won’t open and enjoy a properly-functioning door once again.

Tips and Tricks to Handle a Stuck Door

Occasionally, Dodge Journey owners may encounter a situation where their door won’t open. In such cases, it’s important to be familiar with several tips and tricks to effectively address a stuck door. Here are a few approaches that can help resolve this issue.

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

1. Apply Lubricant : One of the most common causes of a stuck door is rust or debris accumulation on the door latches, hinges, or locking mechanisms.

Applying an appropriate lubricant, such as WD-40, can help loosen the rust and free up the door. Spray the lubricant on the affected areas and attempt to gently open the door after waiting a few minutes.

2. Check the Door Lock : Sometimes, the issue may not lie with the door itself but with the locking mechanism. Inspect the key fob and the manual door lock to ensure they are functioning properly. If needed, replace the key fob’s battery or repair the manual lock.

3. Assess the Door Alignment : Misaligned doors can lead to difficulties in opening. Examine the alignment of the door and ensure that the gap between the door and the vehicle body is even. If the door appears misaligned, adjusting the hinges may rectify the problem.

4. Use a Slim Jim Tool : A Slim Jim tool can help disengage the locking mechanism from the inside. Carefully insert the tool between the door frame and the window, then gently manipulate it until you hook onto the lock linkage. Once you’ve located the lock linkage, pull the Slim Jim upward to disengage it.

5. Consult a Professional : If all else fails, it’s advisable to take your vehicle to a reputable mechanic or dealership. They can diagnose and address the issue using the appropriate tools and expertise, ensuring that the problem is resolved and the door opens smoothly.

Dodge Journey key fob not working – causes and how to fix it

The remote keyless system in Dodge Journey allows the driver to conveniently lock and unlock the vehicle with the press of a button. When the key fob stops working, it quickly becomes an inconvenience to manually lock and unlock the vehicle. In some cases it can even leave you stranded if the vehicle can’t detect the key and won’t let you start the engine.

Dodge Journey

The most common cause of key fob not working in Dodge Journey is dead battery. But the remote key can also stop working due to worn buttons, poor battery contact, water damage, defective key fob, receiver module issues, signal interference, dead 12 volt battery, and unpaired key requiring reprogramming.

1. Dead battery in key fob

Dead battery is the leading cause of key fob not working in Journey. Usually there are signs of weakening battery before it gives up. If the remote was working previously, but the range of the remote was gradually decreasing until it ceased to function, this indicates that the battery was wearing out.

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

Replace the battery

If the button cell battery in the key fob of Journey is replaced incorrectly or a battery is unsuitable, it can damage the vehicle key. Only replace drained batteries with new batteries in the same voltage, size, and specification. Make sure the battery is facing in the right direction when inserting it.

Recommended video

Key fob not working after replacing the battery

When purchasing a new battery for the key fob of your Journey, keep in mind that the battery may be sitting on the shelf for a long time. Therefore after replacement it may not work, or may not last that long. Try purchasing the battery from a store where stock moves fast. If you still can’t get the key fob to work after verifying that the battery is healthy, your key fob issues may not be due to bad battery.

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

Starting the engine with dead key fob battery

If your Journey has push button start/stop feature, your vehicle may not start due to weak key fob battery and a ‘key not detected’ alert message may be displayed in the instrument cluster. Don’t worry, you can still start your vehicle, the immobilizer is controlled by a passive transponder. Passive means, among other things, that the transponder in the key does not need its own power source.

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

Touch the start/stop button with your key fob and then start the engine. If it doesn’t work, then look in the owners manual for exact location of key fob placement, as it may vary depending on model.

Use spare key: You can try starting your Journey with its second key. It will also rule out any other problem with the first key, for example, water damage.

How long does the key fob battery last?

Depending on how often you use the key fob or remote control of your Journey, the battery should last between two and four years. This is assuming the new battery you installed is healthy and its use by date is many years away.

2. Poor battery connection

The battery inside the key fob of Journey has metal retaining clips that hold the battery in position and completes the circuit. If the clips don’t have any tension, it can cause contact issues and the remote may not receive any power. Make sure the battery is firmly placed and does not move around when you shake the remote. Also make sure all the battery contacts are corrosion and dust free.

3. Water damage

If your Dodge Journey key fob has taken a bath in the soapy water of the washing machine after you forgot to take it out of your pants pocket, water damage is very likely.

Water resistant, not waterproof

Your Journey key has rubber seals which prevents the water from getting to the electronic chip inside. A splash of water or brief exposure to light rain should be fine, but exposure to excessive amount of water like submerging the key in the pool can cause the water to penetrate the seals and damage the chip. Submerging the key in ocean water at the beach can be much more damaging to key fob electronics due to highly conductive nature of salt water.

But my key fob survived water exposure?

If your Journey key fob survived a wash cycle, or a deep bath in the ocean or pool water, it doesn’t make the key fob waterproof, it means you got lucky. Exposure to excessive water increases the risk of water damage, so you shouldn’t make this a habit.

What to do in case of water damage?

If your Journey key fob stopping working after exposure to clean tap water or rain, immediately remove the battery and clean the electronic component with paper towel and let it dry fully before putting back the battery. In case of exposure to salt water, or soapy or dirty water, it is recommended to clean the chip with isopropyl alcohol or electronic cleaner. If the key fob still doesn’t work after cleaning and drying, the chip is probably fried and you will have to buy a new key.

4. Dead 12 volt battery

The remote keyless system and the central locking system in Journey require the 12 volt battery to be in healthy state to function properly. If the 12 volt battery is dead or if the electric current has been interrupted due to corrosion on the battery terminals or the ground connection, all on-board electronics will stop working.

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

In this case, you will have to manually unlock the door of your Journey with physical key. Also, the electrical accessories (e.g. headlights, fan, and infotainment system) will not function or may function poorly, and the engine will not start. Check the 12v battery and its connections.

5. Signal interference

Journey remote control signal can be disrupted by objects, poor weather conditions or transmitters on the same frequency band close to the vehicle. The remote key may work when you’re near the vehicle, but may not work from a distance. In case of severe interference, the remote may not work at all.

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

Interference signals can be caused not only by neighboring radio masts and towers, but also by unprofessionally installed satellite systems. A large part of the radio interference is caused by defects and aging effects in electrical devices and radio systems, which lead to unwanted emissions, radiation and repercussions on power and communication networks. Your Journey key fob should start working again when you leave the area of interference.

6. Reprogramming required

In rare cases, the remote key of Journey may stop working due to pairing issues. The key can be reprogrammed with an OBDII scanner. You may also be able to program a key by following a few steps, an original key is typically required for successful pairing. The instructions should be mentioned in the owners manual. If you fail to do it yourself, you may have to visit an authorized dealer for reprogramming of the key.

7. Defective key fob

If your Journey key fob stopped working after you dropped it on the floor, you may have damaged the internal chip. Or, if your key fob just stopped working one day out of the blue, in rare cases this could indicate a faulty key fob – assuming you have tried everything to fix the issue e.g. battery replacement, reprogramming and the spare key fob works.

8. Faulty receiver module

Dodge Journey has a remote keyless system receiver that receives radio frequency signals from the key fob. If none of your key fobs work, and and you can’t reprogram the keys, it is possible the receiver module has developed a fault.

You may have to perform further diagnostics to identify the faulty. The keyless entry antenna could be damaged, or the module is just not communicating with other modules on the vehicle. In these cases an OBDII scan tool can be used to verify if the commands are being transmitted and acted on by the security module.

9. Electronic immobilizer fault

The immobilizer is an anti-theft security system that prevents the engine from being started and the vehicle from being moved with an unauthorized vehicle key. A fault in the immobilizer system can prevent your Journey from being started. You may also see a warning light with key symbol or key not detected message in the instrument cluster.

For vehicles with an ignition lock

There is a chip in the vehicle key. The chip automatically deactivates the immobilizer if a valid vehicle key is inserted into the ignition lock. The electronic immobilizer is activated automatically when the vehicle key is removed from the ignition lock.

For vehicles with a starter button

There is a chip in the vehicle key. It is used to automatically deactivate the electronic immobilizer when there is a valid remote control vehicle key in the vehicle interior. The electronic immobilizer is automatically activated as soon as there is no valid vehicle key in the vehicle.

The engine can only be started with a genuine vehicle key that is coded correctly. You can obtain coded vehicle keys from an authorized Dodge dealer.

Reset the system

If the key fob is not working due to a glitch in the keyless entry system, it may be possible to restore the functionality by resetting the keyless entry system in your Journey.

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

There isn’t any button or option to reset the keyless entry system in Journey, but you can reboot all the on-board computers by disconnecting the 12 volt battery for a few minutes. Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery first, then from the positive terminal. With the battery disconnected, press the horn button a few times and turn on the headlights to drain out all the residual electricity from the system. After about 15 minutes, reconnect the battery in reverse order: positive cable first, then negative cable.

Use OBD2 scanner for diagnosis

Since Dodge Journey is equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD), a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located. This method will be especially useful when diagnosing a faulty remote keyless system receiver module.

2010 dodge journey doors won't unlock

To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Journey. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the tool connected, turn on the ignition. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be inaccurate. In addition to the vehicle make, model, and engine type, you usually also have to type in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Since some OBD codes are manufacturer-specific, the scanner will be able to give you more accurate information if you enter more details about your Journey.

Conclusion:

There are many reasons why your Dodge Journey key fob is not working. When looking for the reason, you should start with the most obvious cause that is easy to diagnose: dead battery, which you can replace in a few minutes.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

A majority of the time, all of the locks besides the driver side door will not unlock. This includes the hatch which has no keyhole. Right after getting the vehicle (maybe a week afterwards), I noticed the issue. I was helping a friend move and since I just got an SUV, I was the ringer for loading all the big fragile stuff for transport. Locks didn't work, hatch didn't work. Utterly useless. Took it back to the dealer, apparently I couldn't trade it out for something else because you had to return within 3 days. Asked them to repair the locks (because they had to repair anything wrong with the vehicle for free within the 1st month), the locks miraculously started working again. For 3 years I've been taking it back to the dealership whenever the locks stop working, and for 3 years they magically start working again when I get there. They refuse to work on it if the problem isn't happening when you bring it in. I even made sure that it's explicitly notated in my file that "the locks magically start working again when I bring it in for repairs", and have them read it back to me before they start working on it. Doesn't solve or help the situation, but it does make the trip seem a tad less futile.

2010 Dodge Journey Doors Wont Lock

I took my car in to get the Win Module fixed. It was fixed and I was given a new key. Every since my doors lock but sometimes the doors wont lock. And I just lock the doors manually. So now the dealer is saying that it will cost over 1000 to fix the issue. Which is something about the fuse box messed up and power goes in but doesn't come out. Now my question is it was fine before the repair. Could this be something caused by the mechanic? I don't understand how everything was fine and now the issue arise after the repair. Could this issue have anything to do with repairing the Win Module? My husband is overseas and since I feel like they are trying to get over on me. Any help will be appreciated. :-)

Open the door panels and lube all of your lock mechanisms. They tend to get stuck and it harms the locking motor. After I lube mine up, they freely move. Just spray some lithium grease and manually lock and unlock the door with the rocker until it moves very easily. You'll probably have to do this once a year like I do.

Power Door Locks Not Working Problems of Dodge Journey

Dodge Journey owners have reported 5 problems related to power door locks not working (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Dodge Journey based on all problems reported for the Journey.

1 Power Door Locks Not Working problem of the 2015 Dodge Journey

Had not started the vehicle for 1 week. With fob in hand I opened the door. With door open I put my foot on the brake (it did not compress), then pushed the start button. The dash flashed on and off saying fob not detected. Tried pushing fob, tried starting car again. Then a loud clicking began at the front of the vehicle in the motor area. The dash flashing stopped and all screens were black. No power to vehicle at all, door locks did not work. Opened hood to see where clicking was coming from, but could not detect. Tried remote start and traditional start as well. Nothing works. Engine clicking finally stopped after about 10-15 minutes. Car has to be opened with the key and will still not start. 4 Power Door Locks Not Working problem of the 2009 Dodge Journey

While driving the car started to sputter with the wipers going extremely fast then stopping and coming back on. Door locks wouldn't work with key fob or door buttons, left low beam and right high beam wouldn't work, neither front turn signal would work, and temp gauge was off by 30 or 40 degrees. Replaced the battery and none of the issues were fixed. Had to take it to the closest mechanic it finally shut down completely on him while running tests. He called the local Dodge service center and they told him it is a known electrical issue with Journeys and durangos that they see all the time. He had to order a complete new integrated power module or fuse and circuit board for $860 part only. When he ordered the part out of chicago they only had 1 in stock as the guy stated they can't keep these in due to so many issues. Car is running now but it is at the dealer service center because only they can reset the computer so everything works as normal. So, another $100+ for that as well. This needs to placed in a recall status before someone is seriously injured when their car shuts down while driving. I will be submitting a reimbursement request. 2010 Dodge Journey: Power Lock Problem. Please help me understand.

  • Add to quote

Hello. I hope that someone can help me understand this problem. :help: Disclaimers: I purchased this used vehicle 3 months ago. Car had 56k on it. And, I know nothing about cars but I am trying to learn. I first experienced problems two weeks ago. The car started and was warming up when suddenly, everything went crazy on me (as if the alarm had gone off, but could not be terminated); the normal alarm sound finally stopped but a residual high-pitched and loud sound continued, as did the wipers, lights. The only thing that was different that day was that we had frigid temps in NYC (I park outside). I took the car to the closest shop I could find (as the car was drivable and being NYC, there is a shop 3 minutes away from wherever you are). I have no clue what they did but the everything indeed turned off (sound, wipers, lights). Whatever they did though, seemed to reset the car, since the radio presets were gone, and the key fob was not synchronized with the car (did not lock/unlock door) as neither did the buttons on the car. The next two mornings the battery was dead. Took it to different shops and they tested battery and attenuator and they said these were fine. The next day the battery did not die. But I was still having the no-lock/unlock issue. Finally I had some time to take it to the dealer where I bought the car so that they could help me with the lock/unlock system. First he said I needed a new battery, so he put that in. Then he said that he had to program the key. They tried, and they were able to make it so that the key was able to unlock the doors, and so that the button on the car was also able to unlock the doors. But no luck with the locking part, so they gave up. I then took it to a certified Chrysler tech. He concluded that I needed a new fuse which he claimed would cost $80 dollars and would take three hours to complete, and so he was going to charge me a ridiculous amount. Then he changed his mind and said he had made a mistake; he then claimed that I needed a whole fuse box, or TIPM, and that part alone was over $500, so you can imagine how much he wanted to charge me now. I read a little about the TIPM and fuses on the owner's manual and internet but am no expert. How common is it for the box itself to go bad? How could this have happened? And if the box is bad why are other electrical parts still working? Do the techs just want to replace the whole thing because they don't want to find the actual problem within the box (such as a fuse)? How do they determine that a fuse box (TIPM) is defective? How come the initial dealer was able to upgrade from the NO lock/unlock problem to just an unlock problem by programming. Could it be just a reprogramming issue. I suspect that it is a short somewhere because the horn also went defective when the doors did, and remember the battery kept dying. Please help me understand. Do you suggest I go look at every fuse myself and replace any blown ones if I find any (it seems pretty simple as I've seen videos on the internet). I am sorry for the long narrative but I really hope that one of you can help me understand what I should do. Chrysler customer service is of no help.

Basically, TIMP controls the whole electrical parts of your car. As you are facing some problems with your electrical parts like alarm, lights, and wiper, it might be the TIMP problem. However, you are also getting your battery dead meaning that electronic parts are consuming charge from your battery. So, I think it would be better to change the TIMP. As the Chrysler Customer Service is charging you more, it would be better if you find a local mechanic to replace the old one. Also you can search online stores to get a rated TIMP for your car or you can find from used car stores. This way you can save some money.

THE TIPM seems to be having issues across a lot of other dodge brands. I had a similar issue on my 04 ram where all the locks went haywire, eventually burned out all 4 door actuators, but mine was caused by a short on the master switch which told the tipm to unlock all, eventually all 4 actuators were locked into the unlocked condition and froze. I could never lock truck until all the actuators were replaced...

Anyone know if its possible to open the rear hatch from the inside?

My hatch wont open.  Doors lock and unlock just fine.  Handle on outside wont engage the latch.

Have no idea why this is happening.

Probably not without removing the interior panel but tyevthe hatch would need to be open to remove it. Maybe there is some hidden access panel?

The handle has a cable connecting it to the latch - it is either disengaged or broken - the dealer probably has a way in.  If not, then they or you could wind up chopping through trim to gain access . . . . .

There is a small 'emergency' access panel on the inside of the liftgate trim, at the bottom center below the light. Pry it open with a small flat screwdriver. Inside is what looks like a large plastic screwhead that can be turned with a phillips or large flathead screwdriver to open the hatch.

Arrived 2 years later to post this. FYI: the rear liftgate latch mech WILL eventually fail. I use the liftgate on my 5-year old Journey about 12 times every day, all year round so since I knew in advance the part does fail, was prepared for it. Simple plastic gear inside, teeth eventually wear off. How to tell that's the problem before ordering another one and tearing the defective part out of the liftgate? Open up the small access hatch directly below the interior light. You'll see the white plastic item that will accept either a large flat blade screwdriver or a very large Phillips (+) scredwdriver. Turn it clockwise(to the right), almost a 1/4 turn. Prior to doing so when attempting to open the gate from the outside, your lift handle would appear to be doing nothing. Turning this white plastic piece then changes that and when you lift the latch on the outside, you'll feel a resounding "click" and the gate will open. Your remote will still allow you to lock your 4 side doors but the rear latch will remain unlocked. If you wish to re-lock it you would have to go into the rear of the vehicle and turn the white plastic item to the left. The part is available NON OEM from various places. We bought our online from Amazon.ca, $58 shipped free. The part is independent of the steel bracket latch and you remove your old one and replace it with the new one. Curious about how it's done? Search YouTube with this term 2014 Dodge Journey rear liftgate actuator replacement. Obviously your model year might be different so just change the year. The Nitro also utilizes the same latch mech. Not even going to say what the Dodge-Chrysler dealerships want for this basic part and I was once quoted a min. of 2 hours of cough, "diagnostics" at over $100 per hour for just the look see. I know for a fact they automatically knew the actuator wasn't working as it IS a common failure. Steel body but a plastic gear inside WILL fail soon enough. Note: for most anything that can or will go wrong on a Journey you can find someone on YouTube who has posted the repair for same. Seek out a parts supplier (or checkout many) before paying the exorbitant prices at the dealerships. They sell the same part but at crazy prices.

I know the question is a few years old now, but this point keeps coming up in camping forums, how to get out the back hatch if necessary.  I researched it a while back and now I’m doing it again and it occurs to me that although the solutions seemed  great, just turn that little white plastic piece… But really, that only *unlocks* the door, right? It doesn’t actually pop the opening mechanism?
